Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari behind closed doors yesterday focused mostly on strategies to dislodge corrupt elements from the National Assembly, a presidency source has disclosed to SaharaReporters. During the meeting, which lasted for close to 2 hours, Obasanjo pointedly told Buhari that with a corrupt leadership led by Saraki at the National Assembly, he stands no chance of fighting corruption and moving the nation forward. The two-time Nigeria leader then reportedly told Buhari he must be willing to outspend the Senate President in order to remove him and the other rogues from the National Assembly, giving several instances when he had to use such methods during his tenure to dislodge his enemies from the Assembly. Obasanjo had a reputation for deploying rich businessmen to offer irresistible bribes to lawmakers to meet his objectives. He is said to have revealed to Buhari that members of the People’s Democratic Party who hid huge sums of money in Ghana and elsewhere are reorganizing to take power from him. A flustered Buhari thanked Obasanjo, describing the former PDP leader as a “unique” person who could do the unthinkable. He, however, responded that he could not in good conscience spend all the monies available to oust just a few people because he needed to show to Nigerians that he was elected to perform. Our source said he reiterated his wish to use lawful means to prosecute those members of the Assembly involved in corruption, but expressed disappointment in the judiciary, citing instances where judges have been compromised in ongoing cases. Speaking further on Senate President Saraki, Buhari told Obasanjo that Saraki was an ambitious man who aspires to become president, but promised he would do everything legally possible to prosecute him for his acts of corruption. SaharaReporters learnt later that the Attorney General of the Federation is dusting up files against former governors for prosecution. Saraki is said to be a top priority on the list, as Buhari is said to be opposed to any form of truce with the Senate President even though he is currently in talks with the Secretary to the Federal Government, the Director-General of the Department of State Security and the AGF. On Saraki’s side, Senator Danjuma Goje, David Umaru, who is the Chair of the Senate's Judiciary Committee, and two others are reaching out to help Saraki resolve the ongoing forgery lawsuit against him and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu. As soon as Obasanjo left the meeting with Buhari, he spoke to State House reporters. Among others, he told them that his previously-expressed position on National Assembly members being full of rogues and robbers has been vindicated over the revelation that they padded the 2016 budget. http://saharareporters.com/2016/07/26/spend-money-dislodge-rogue-saraki-and-others-obasanjo-advises-buhari? |

First time encounter with Daniel Odey Udeh, popularly known as “Man of God” diligently breaking stones and patching up potholes on major streets of Yenagoa metropolis, Bayelsa State, one would mistake him for an employee of the state Ministry of Works or Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, FERMA. Ironically, his worn-down appearance makes look like someone, who ekes out a living from handouts from motorists, but in truth, Udeh is a Civil Engineering graduate of the University of Jos, UNIJOS. Man of God filling pot-holes along Imgbi road, Yenagoa metropolis It was out of sheer curiosity that Niger Delta Voice decided to visit Man of God, who has become very popular among motorists, particularly the Keke NAPEP operators in the state capital. It was a no holds bared According to Udeh, an indigene of Benue state, who is in his late 30s, when there is no menial construction job for him to do, he fills potholes, instead of idling away. His dedication to the task is what attracts people to him and they were prompted to nickname him ‘Man of God.’ He told our reporter: “My name is Daniel Odey Udeh, I am from Benue state, I am a graduate of Civil Engineering from the University of Jos, I am not married yet. I specialised in construction, but I do not have a paid job, so I do menial construction jobs. However, you see the menial jobs do not come regularly, so when there is no job, I come out to do this instead of idling away or begging. ” Free will and kindness Udeh added: “Some drivers appreciate my effort and they usually give me money, I do not force them, they give me out of their free will and kindness. Most times, I go home with N1, 000, N2, 000 or more. I also use part of the money to buy stones and gravel. I also pay the keke driver that helps me carry the stones to where I want to work, for instance, I bought theses stones for N1, 400, which I am using to work.” Motorists notify me about bad spots “Nobody harasses me, not even the police or other security personnel, they do not disturb me, and instead of harassing me, people appreciate me and give me money. You see the hammer that I am working with, a good Nigerian bought it for me. “Most bad spots are recommended to me by people, particularly motorists. I was at another location in (Okaka area) yesterday, and today, someone directed me to come here, (Imgbi Road), that there are bad spots need attention, that is why I am here. Some people abuse me “However, some people abuse me, others say I am damaging the road and causing traffic gridlock, I am not bothered because it is not everybody that will appreciate your good deeds,” he said. On the opinion of some persons that he either is a beggar or mentally deranged, Udeh said: “I am not a mad man or beggar; I am ‘Man of God.’ I do what I do because of God, not man. But if God wants to use someone to bless me with a job or anything that will improve my life, I will appreciate it. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/07/daniel-udeh-unemployed-unijos-graduate-fixes-yenagoa-potholes/? |
Nigeria’s economy will not appreciate to an impressive level in 2016. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Nigeria’s economy is likely to shrink as it was performing below the IMF forecast for the country. Gene Leon, IMF resident representative in Nigeria on Monday, said energy shortages and delayed budget weigh on output in the country. With deflation of the economy by 0.4 percent in the first quarter of 2016, Leon predicted it will experience some growth in the second half of the year, but he added that it would not be enough to upturn initial shrinkage. “I think there is a high likelihood that the year 2016 as a whole will be a contractionary year,” he was quoted by Bloomberg, “While the economy should look better in second half of the year, growth will probably not be sufficiently fast, sufficiently rapid to be able to negate the outcome of the first and second quarters”, he added. On what must be done to improve Nigeria’s economy, Leon said “most people would agree that if you should fix one thing in this country, it should be power. There is a need to start changing the power equation from 2016, from today, not tomorrow or later.” He added that the inflation, which is currently at 15.6 percent, may surge a little more in the months ahead but would not go beyond 20 percent before the end of 2016. http://dailypost.ng/2016/07/12/why-nigerias-economy-will-decline-in-2016-imf/? |

One of Nigeria’s oil workers unions, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, (PENGASSAN), has directed its members to prepare for strike from Thursday over some unresolved industry issues with the federal government. In a statement, Monday, PENGASSAN directed its four zones to sensitize members for the planned strike. The statement, signed by the spokesperson for the group, Lumumba Okugbawa, recalled the May 24, 2016 inconclusive negotiation with the government on issues affecting the oil industry. The oil workers said a meeting with government, which was scheduled for June 23, was moved at the last minute to June 30. The negotiation failed to resume even on that new date, as the planned meeting was again unceremoniously cancelled, with no new appointment given, the group said. “We see this as a deliberate attempt by government to frustrate the discussion of the myriad of issues raised in the (May 24, 2016) Communiqué, which are critical to the survival of the oil and gas industry in the country,” the statement said. The group recalled the issues raised with government during its May 24, 2016 meeting to include the huge joint venture/cash call arrears, which it said was stalling new investments and frustrating the creation of new jobs in the industry, as well as causing massive job losses among its members. The association said the country’s tertiary institutions were producing graduates with little or no job placement opportunities, adding that even those with jobs were struggling to get salaries, while those in the services sector were regularly faced with threats of redundancies. “We cannot fold our arms and watch this gradual collapse of our strategic oil and gas industry and its attendant consequences on the nation’s economy, which is a sharp contrast to the present government’s avowed promise on creation and retention of jobs. “Based on the above, our members have been directed to embark on a gradual withdrawal of our services from their various offices, sites and production facilities effective Thursday, July 7, 2016 beginning from 12.01 hours,” the statement said. If the oil workers make good their threat, the strike will disrupt the smooth supply of petroleum products Nigerians have been enjoying since normalcy was restored after labour suspended its industrial action in May following the removal of fuel subsidy and adjustment of fuel price of petrol from N86 to N145 per litre. When contacted by PREMIUM TIMES, the spokesperson for the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Garba Deen Mohammed, asked for time to consult with the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu, before commenting on the oil workers’ threat. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/business/206402-fuel-crisis-looms-oil-workers-mobilise-nationwide-strike-unresolved-issues.html? |

Aleppo | An ISIS jihadist has recently converted to Christianity after being left for dead near the Eastern border of Syria where he was finally rescued by Christian missionaries from the region, reports the Aleppo Herald this morning. The man, that has miraculously survived multiple gun shot wounds after an altercation between ISIS and Syrian Army forces, was rescued by members of the Saint Dominican Catholic Presbytery of Ayyash hours after the conflict had erupted. The members of the Christian organization wanted to give the man a proper Christian burial and carried him over 26 kilometers before the man miraculously came back to life as he was believed to have died from his wounds. catholic-priest-syria The man was believed to be dead for hours before he suddenly came back to life, recalls priest Hermann Groschlin, who discovered the body of the young man As the man came back to his senses, he reported to priest Hermann Groschlin of the visions he had whilst in the afterlife, an event that profoundly changed the 32-year old jihadist and eventually led to his conversion to Christianity days later. “He told me that he was always taught that to die as a martyr would open him the Gates of Jannah, or Gates of Heaven” recalled the priest. “Yet, as he had started to ascend towards the light of the Heavens, devilish entities, or Jinns he called them, appeared and led him to the fiery pits of Hell. There he had to relive all the pain he had inflicted upon others and every death he had caused throughout his entire life. He even had to relive the decapitations of his victims through their own eyes”, images the jihadist claims will haunt him for the rest of his life, admits the priest. “Then Allah, or God, spoke unto him and told him that he had failed miserably as a human soul, that he would be banned from the Gates of Heaven if he chose to die, but that if he chose to live again, he would have another chance to repent of his sins and walk along God’s path once again” The young man claims he was brought back to life moments later and eventually converted to Christianity days later, believing he had been misled throughout his religious life under the worship of Allah. The young man, who’s wounds have surprisingly healed in a very short time, has chosen to live amongst the members of the Catholic presbytery who rescued him from the desert and hopes his story will help other ISIS fighters change their ways and convert to the one and only true God, the priest told local reporters. http://worldnewsdailyreport.com/isis-fighter-converts-to-christianity-after-allah-refuses-him-entrance-to-gates-of-heaven/ |
Ottawa | Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, and the New Democratic Party leader Thomas Mulcair, made a surprising stunt yesterday, to denounce the shooting that killed 50 people in a gay bar in Orlando, Florida. The two politicians, known for their dislike of each other, gathered for the first time in a joint press conference, yesterday. They completely surprised the media and the world, by kissing languidly for several seconds, to fight homophobic prejudices and denounce the recent violence against the LGBT community. “What happened in Orlando was so terrible, that we didn’t have a choice but to react strongly,” said Mr. Mulcair, moments after the kiss. “Unfortunately, many people still have problems accepting the simple fact of seeing two men kissing each other, and that’s why this kind of gesture becomes so important. When Mr. Trudeau called me to suggest that we should kiss, I must admit that I hesitated a little. However, he quickly convinced me that it was a good idea! It was for a good cause, and to be honest, it was quite a kiss!” trudeauconférence Justin Trudeau called on all Canadians to imitate him, to fight the prejudice and hatred that are responsible for massacres like the one that took place in Florida on Sunday morning. The Canadian Prime Minister also denounced the killings and praised the courage of NDP Leader, for accepting his invitation. “After an event like this, we really had to react.” Mr Trudeau told reporters. “I approached Tom to know what he thought, but I really didn’t expect such enthusiasm. I was already surprised when he accepted, and I want to thank him for sharing this moment with me. I must confess that I’m not used to kiss someone wearing the mustache and beard … but I think every men should try it at least once in their life.” Several public figures have praised the courage and daring of the two politicians, and their kiss has provoked some strong reactions on the social media, both positive and negative. http://worldnewsdailyreport.com/canadian-prime-minister-and-opposition-leader-share-kiss-to-denounce-orlando-massacre/ |
