Singer Simi took to her Twitter handle to talk about how Nigerians can fix the country and fix the country image which has been destroyed. Simi wrote: We need to fix our country, fix our image - because the only reason the Nigerian passport is going through so much scrutiny is because of what they assume we're ALL capable of. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, describes as unfortunate the acquittal of Robert Azibaola, a cousin to former president, Goodluck Jonathan, who was charged for $40 million fraud before Justice Nnamdi Dimgba. The EFCC expresses concern that despite the weight of evidence brought before the Court and witnesses presented, Justice Dimgba held that, "the prosecution must show directly how the defendant took possession of funds and knew that it forms part of proceeds of corruption." Invariably, the Commission's legal team will be studying the judgement thoroughly and will be taking necessary actions to appeal it as we hope that the appellate court shall view the merit of the prosecution and do justice to the case. Justice Mojisola Olatoregun of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, on has adjourned to June 27, 2019 to deliver judgment in an application filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, seeking the final forfeiture of the sums of $8,435,788.84 (about N3bn) and N9.2bn linked to the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience. The former First Lady is joined in the suit marked FHC/L/CS/620/18 alongside some companies namely: Globus Integrated Services Limited, Finchley Top Homes Limited, AM-PM Global Netwotk Limited, Pagmat Oil and Gas Limited and Magel Resort Limited. The money was said to be warehoused in some banks, including Skye Bank Plc (now Polaris Bank Plc), Diamond Bank Plc, Stanbic-IBTC and First Bank Plc. Justice Olatoregun had fixed May 8, 2019 to deliver judgement in the application filed by the EFCC for the final forfeiture of the funds, but deferred judgement and adjourned to May 24, 2019 for further hearing of "oral explanatory evidence" by the parties. At the resumed sitting on May 24, one Esther Oba, a younger sister to Patience and Special Assistant on Household Administration to the former President, told the Court how her name and picture were used to open an account with Skye Bank Plc (now Polaris Bank PLC) without her being a signatory to the account. Under cross-examination by the applicant counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, Oba told the court that the several billions found in her Skye Bank account were gifts she received when she lost her mother. She also admitted that the account was operated by one of her siblings on the order of the former First Lady. She said: "The money given to me as gifts were first kept in her house and she later gave all the money in tranches to one Festus Oyoha to deposit on her behalf in Skye Bank. "The sum of $400,000 was given to Festus Oyoha as first deposit in the bank." She further told the court that she had two different signatures she used for withdrawal of funds from banks and for other activities. Operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team have smashed a robbery gang which specialised in robbing women of expensive vehicles in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. Three members of the gang arrested by the police were identified as Ego Ike, Obinna Igwe and Adamu Nuhu. The suspects usually took the stolen vehicles to Niger Republic, where they sold them. It was gathered that the police went after the gang members after they allegedly stole a 2016 Toyota Corolla from an official of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, who was on her way home from work. One of the suspects, Ike, told PUNCH during the week that he joined the gang after he lost a sum of N6m he had invested in clothing business to gambling. He said, “I was a spare parts dealer at the Ladipo Market, Lagos, but I moved to Abuja in search of greener pastures. When I couldn’t achieve much, I pressured my father to sell his only land in the village and he used the money to send me to Istanbul, Turkey. He stated that his gang also carjacked a Toyota Matrix from a woman and sold it in Kaduna for N270,000, adding that they usually targeted women to avoid resistance. Ike, who hails from Anambra State, also admitted to have participated in the operation in which the FIRS official’s car was stolen. He said, “We took the car that night to Niger Republic, but at the Katsina border, Linus and I came down from the car while Yellow and a man took the car into Niger Republic. Unfortunately, Nigerien police arrested them. We target wmen because we don’t use guns and women won’t resist us. We go for Toyota vehicles because we easily find buyers for them.”Nuhu, a native of Kaduna State, said he took to robbery when he was 17. Anome Emereh, a pupil of Army Day Secondary School, Owode Yewa, Ogun State, has demanded justice after losing his right hand in an attack by his classmate, one Lateef Ebunolorun. Emereh, who has since been forced to write with his left hand, lamented that the experience was gruelling. It was learnt that the plight of the Junior Secondary School 3 pupil started on February 14, 2018 when he was reportedly stabbed in the shoulder by Ebunolorun. It was gathered that Emereh saw Ebunolorun taking a substance suspected to be drugs on his way home from school that day and cautioned him. The advice did not go down well with Ebunolorun who reportedly challenged Emereh to a duel. After they were separated, Ebunolorun reportedly picked a broken bottle and inflicted a deep cut on Emereh’s shoulder. The hand was eventually amputated due to the severity of the injury. Narrating his ordeal, 17-year-old Emereh said the injury had impacted his academic activities negatively. He said, “I was returning home from school on that day when I saw Lateef (Ebunlomon) taking drugs. He was with one Adisa and his brother, Ahmed Adesina. I advised him to stop taking drugs and he started abusing me. He grabbed my clothes and punched me in the chest. I also punched him and people separated us.Emereh’s father, Thomas, a 72-year-old retired soldier, said he spent his pension and borrowed money to treat his son. He said, “I got a call that my son had been killed. By the time I got to the scene, he had been rushed to a hospital. A doctor said the wound was very deep. He invited another doctor to examine him. Eventually, they referred him to a hospital in Port Novo, Benin Republic. When we got there, they said he might die unless the hand was amputated.”City Round learnt that Ebunolorun, was arrested four months after the incident, and Adesina had been taken to court. Ebunlomon was arraigned before an Ogun State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ilaro on two counts bordering on assault while Adisa was charged with aiding evasion of arrest. The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges. The trial had been concluded and the case is slated for May 30, 2019 for ruling.
