Your argument is lame because Sowore has been consistent in his struggle. Nnamdi Kanu is not the first person he will support neither will he be the last. Sowore is not even a free man as his case is still in court. You are just paranoid and suspiciously overthinking an issue that is simple to understand. oalandAgents2: |
What do you gain from politicizing this? Tomorrow you will cry over injustice. Nomercie: |
Over the past few days, Sowore and a few other brave Nigerians have been in the eye of the storm for staking their life to demand for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu. It is no longer news that Kanu has been unjustly detained for the past 5 years now, accused of terrorism. Kanu has on several occasions made it clear that all he wants was for the government to give his people the a chance to choose if they want to be part of Nigeria through a peaceful referendum. Kanu got bail but was attacked by government agents leading to his escape from Nigeria. The government kidnapped Kanu from Kenya, brought him back only for the court to rule that he should be freed, the government disobeyed court of appeal order to free him, instead rushed to supreme court to get a favourable ruling to continue to detain him, clearly denying him justice thereby violating his rights. Since, Sowore and Kanu's lawyers started the "FreeNnamdiKanu" movement, I've read a lot of comments from some users here and other platforms stating how they lost loved ones and their livelihood as result of Nnamdi Kanu's IPOB movement in the south east, I will not say that these people don't have genuine reasons to demand for justice. The only fault I find with them is their biased sense of justice, their sentimentalism, blaming Nnamdi Kanu for everything but absolving the government of any crimes in it's role of escalating the violence at the early stage of Nnamdi Kanu's struggle as a result of the killings of peaceful IPOB members by state actors whose only offense was protesting for their rights to be heard and their rights to self-determination. Yes, Kanu gave direct orders in his broadcasts for his members to defend themselves, he gave direct orders for them to kill if any of their members are killed. Yes, he said horrible things but was the government killing IPOB members? Did IPOB resort to self-defence/violence without any provocation? Kanu said a lot of things that earned him enemies but he is a human being and as such not above mistake. Nigeria prides itself as a nation of laws, a democratic nation that upholds human rights. If this is true then I see no reason why Kanu should still be in detention. If he must be jailed then let it be done in accordance with the law, let the government obey subsisting court order that declared him free. In my opinion, it is shameful that the supreme court was willing to entertain this case in the first place. Kanu may be a devil in the eyes of some Nigerians but the continued injustice and flagrant disregard of the law by the government should be of greater concern to all Nigerians. Hate does no one any good, you may hate the igbo people, you may hate Kanu but remember that injustice spares no one. Martin Niemöller famously wrote and i quote.... First they came for the CommunistsThis was the poetic confession by Martin Niemöller admiting his guilt for letting the rise of the Nazis plague his nation. He was referring to the purging of different groups by the Nazis and how many people including him reacted to it. His words says alot about how selfish and afraid a normal person can be when faced with unpleasant situation. Many said during the invasion that they would try and do something to stop the nazis from gaining power, but a closer examination will show that many did nothing until it was their turn to be persecuted. This is my favorite quote, because it's an honest interpretation about how the regular person thinks and acts in this kind of situation. If the government is allowed to get away with this and Nnamdi Kanu is not released, it means that the government can do the same thing to you reading this post or any one you care about without any push back. Simply put, supporting this injustice been done to Nnamdi Kanu is akin to supporting lawlessness, corruption and constitutional impunity. Nigerians will have the opportunity on 20th October 2025 to stand united against injustice, to send a strong message to all their political oppressors and the world that they as a people will no longer accept a country were some are treated as sacred cows while others are treated as second class citizens, that they will no longer accept lawlessness on the part of Tinubu's government. It is my hope that all Nigerians irrespective of religion or tribe will put aside all political sentiments and heed the clarion call to stand for justice, support this movement by coming out en mass on October 20th to protest peacefully for the release of Nnamdi. Martin Luther famously said Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. No nation can progress without peace and there is no peace without justice. #FreeNnamdiKanuNow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgbIZlEKnKw |
Sometimes, I get amused over some comments I read in this forum. So you believe what you've posted below is true? Breaker001: |
Let all well meaning Nigerians support the movement to end the unjust detention of Nnamdi Kanu. |
I've an important post to make, an open letter to Sowore regarding the upcoming protest but Nairaland has shut down ability to create thread with a strange message about overwhelmed server. I hope this is not an indirect form of censorship. Please wait for a few minutes before submitting this post. Our server is overwhelmed. |
Seem you are the one sounding funny so according to your story Kanu instructed a full grown adult to kill and bury 2000 heads, because this adult carried out the instruction then it is Kanu's fault. Let's assume your story is true how is it Kanu's fault? Every individual is responsible for his or her actions as long as you are above 18, you are legally responsible. Your anger should be directed at the adults that did the actual killings or burning of properties and not Nnamdi Kanu except if it was a minor then you may have a point. The issue at stake is not about if Kanu is guilty or not but about the unfair continued violation of his rights by the government tammie24: |
It is not a lie, here is the link to the news. https://dailypost.ng/2025/10/14/nnamdi-kanu-nans-releases-programme-for-nationwide-protest/ All Nigerians that want justice will take a stand on 20th October if the government fail to release Nnamdi Kanu. This is not time for unnecessary distractions. Go and tell your government to obey court order and release Kanu. sreamsense: |
There is so much injustice in Nigeria, many Nigerians are not serious about fixing these issues because of tribal sentiments. No nation built on injustice and lies can make genuine progress. Tinubu and his party APC will crush the oppostion completely by mid 2026 if nothing is done by Nigerians to demand for electoral reforms. Biglittlelois: |
This is great news from NANS let all well meaning Nigerians support the movement to free Nnamdi Kanu. |
Was a disaster from day one. Without electoral reforms and his new INEC chairman (Amupitan) now in place, Tinubu may win 2027 election in a landslide victory and the blame will go to Nigerians for their collective docility and tribal sentiments towards serious national issues. It appears something wrong with Nairaland, no way to add new threads. "Please wait for a few minutes before submitting this post. Our server is overwhelmed." Mrfixitt: |
It appears Nairaland has disabled the ability for some members to post threads with the message. "Please wait for a few minutes before submitting this post. Our server is overwhelmed." I can no longer contribute new threads to the forum. |
You are naive to still be thinking that this is about igbo or tribal sentiments. What is happening now is complete state capture of all critical institutions by Tinubu. I had said in an earlier post that APC will crush the opposition completely before mid 2026. Now that TNEC chairman is in place, what is left will be the mass defections to APC, this will be the final nail that will ensure a one party state for Tinubu to completely crush PDP and any other major opposition that may stop him before 2027 election. 20th October is near, till then, I rest my case. buckeyemedia: |
But this is not about who he is fighting or not fighting for, it is about justice. If you believe in justice and value human rights then Kanu does not need to be on your side before you speak up for him. Nigeria government kidnapped him from Kenya and court ruled that they should free him, since the government disobeyed that court order, that is a clear injustice and a stain on Nigeria's image. The problem with many commentators on this platform is that they can't seem to be objective when analysing serious national issues without tribal bias. buckeyemedia: |
Your emotional outburst does not change the fact that Kanu is been held unjustly by the government. Even if he is guilty of all you sighted, is it fair that Nigeria government has refused to obey court order simply because it did not favour the government? If you truly care about justice you should be asking the government to do the right thing. Vision101: |
We all need to set aside our political bias to support the October 20th movement for Nnamdi Kanu's release. If not for any other reason but to show to the international community, set a precedence that Nigeria is not a lawless country. Let the government end the supreme court drama, obey subsisting lower court order and free Nnamdi Kanu. buckeyemedia: |
Hmm so peaceful protest which you call "chest beating" won't get Nnamdi Kanu justice but a clear terrorism chest beating got the guy whose picture I've attached below and his gang a deal to continue killing Nigerians. The government will hear from Nigerians on October 20th. buckeyemedia:
|
You kidnapped him, brought back for trial illegally and same lower court ruled that you should free him and you disobeyed court order, ran to supreme court to get judgement that favour you. buckeyemedia: |
Supreme Court entertained a case without one party (The government) obeying the judgement of a lower court then proceed to rule in favour of that same party that disobeyed the lower court's order to release Kanu and you call that justice? Is it not glaring to you that Nnamdi Kanu won't get justice in court? Except you want to be biased then you can continue to parrot the official government narrative. favor914: |
Let the people exercise their right to peaceful protest, if you don't want to support it then keep quiet let those who want to do so, do so in peace. Adaisback: |
Comments like yours reinforces the notion that many Nigerians pretend to like democracy but love oppressive governments. You are happy to see Sowore jailed for exercising his rights but you will cry, you will scream injustice when you are denied your salary, you will run to same unjust high court you praising now hoping to get justice. Regarding the protest, did I tell you I won't be there? favor914: |
One reason in my opinion I think that made Simon Ekpa's case different from Kanu is Ekpa owned up directly to arming his men and the killings done by his men in several of his social media posts. This is why he was charged and prosecuted for terrorism by the Finland government. In Kanu's case, he on several occasions made it clear that what he was pushing for was referendum, he went on trial, court ruled that he should be released but the government disobeyed court order and instead ran to supreme court to get a favourable judgement to detain him, making it obvious that Nigeria government has no regard for the rule of law. Your comment has exposed your hypocrisy which is clear for all to see. It is you and your government that will beg for reprieve from angry protesters on October 20th if Kanu is not freed by then. Commentor: |
What is more denigrating than a government that has refused to obey court order? If it was Igboho that was detained this way and his rights violated you won't be saying this. All the spin doctors of Nairaland are out on this thread to twist the narrative with the sole aim of stopping the protest but you will all fail. If you want to stop the protest, tell the government to free Nnamdi Kanu before 20th October. flokii: |
Was Kanu not acquitted by Court of Appeal before supreme court overturned it clearly in favour of the government? https://www.straitstimes.com/world/nigeria-supreme-court-blocks-release-of-separatist-leader-kanu Recently, Kenya declared Nnamdi Kanu's transfer to Nigeria illegal https://www.channelstv.com/2025/06/27/kenyan-court-declares-nnamdi-kanus-transfer-to-nigeria-illegal/ Commentor: |
Arrest him for exercising his rights to protest against injustice. If it was your mother that was detained and treated the same way as Nnamdi Kanu I guess you will do worse than Sowore. Is Nigeria no longer a "democracy"? tammie24: |
The court ruled severally that Kanu should be released but your government refused to obey court order. How do you think Nnamdi Kanu will get justice when the government has clearly demonstrated over and over again that it is above the law. This peaceful protest should serve as a strong message and remind the government that ultimate power lies with the people. Nigeria as a nation will never progress if the injustice against the igbo people is not addressed. Nigeria will never progress in a state of lawlessness. hotseat: |
It is obvious that many commenting on this thread and other similar threads against Nnamdi Kanu don't like the igbo people, that is why there is a concerted effort by these malicious mischievious commentators to politicize Sowore's fight for justice as being an attempt to steal Peter Obi's votes. Nigerians need to choose if they want a country built on justice or one built on lies and injustice. If Nnamdi Kanu must be jailed for whatever trumped up charges some of you on this platform like helinues are demanding then the government must first obey court order by releasing him. None of you commenting here against Nnamdi Kanu would want your rights or that of any of your family members violated the way his right is been violated just because he is an igbo man. Nigeria remains an unjust nation unless Nnamdi Kanu is set free. |
It is time, october 20th no going back. I hope all well meaning Nigerians support the movement to free Nnamdi Kanu |
The october 20th nationwide protest is sacrosanct, I urge all well meaning Nigerians to support the movement to free Nnamdi Kanu and end the national shame his continued detention has caused Nigeria. |
Sowore disclosed this in a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday. Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has revealed that he reached out to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and his deputy, Benjamin Kalu, over the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), ahead of the planned #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest scheduled for October 20. Sowore disclosed this in a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday. He noted that the engagement was part of broader efforts to secure Kanu’s release through both political and public pressure. According to the activist, he reached out separately to both presiding officers of the House to urge them to take a formal position by convening an emergency plenary session to pass a resolution demanding that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu order Kanu’s immediate release. “The Speaker stated that because the matter is still in court, he would not officially table it before the House,” Sowore wrote. “However, he assured me that he would meet privately with some members, especially Obi Aguocha, who represents Nnamdi Kanu’s constituency, to explore a political resolution. He also mentioned that he had previously made underground interventions with the DSS (Department of State Services) on the matter.” Sowore also disclosed that Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu confirmed that discussions were ongoing between the presidency and select lawmakers regarding Kanu’s release, but admitted that “the judicial process has been frustratingly slow.” “I took this to mean that a majority of them are using the court trial as an alibi,” Sowore added. In his post, Sowore equally revealed that members of the Abia State House of Assembly have not yet confirmed whether they will participate in the protest. Igbo women under the umbrella of the Igbo Women Assembly (IWA) had also announced their full backing for the planned October 20 nationwide protest at Aso Rock Villa. Sowore, who is leading the advocacy for the protest, stated the demonstration is to demand the immediate release of Kanu. In a statement issued on Saturday, the National President of IWA, Lolo Nneka Chimezie, declared the group’s “full and total support” for the movement, describing the action as “a step in the right direction for justice and national conscience.” Chimezie said the pan-Igbo women’s body had resolved to mobilize women from all parts of Igboland and other regions to participate in the protest, stressing that Kanu’s continued detention represents “a stain on Nigeria’s justice system and a wound on the conscience of the nation.” IWA described Kanu as “a freedom fighter and justice advocate who is being persecuted for speaking out against the oppression of his people and exposing the hidden agenda of the oppressors.” https://saharareporters.com/2025/10/12/sowore-reaches-out-house-reps-speaker-abbas-deputy-kalu-push-nnamdi-kanus-release |
