NairaBaba: INSTALLATION STEPS
1. The wires are attached/ secured to the supporting angle bar with binding wire, galvanized binding is better and very cheap. I bought 500 but was not enough. 2. Use mortal, more plaster sand and less or no sharp sand to secure the spaces between the angle bars for additional security because of big boys in case they cut it from the angle bars. And also make it difficult to lift it up and crawl under.
Note: 1.plaster sand binds more than sharp sand. 2.Galvanized binding wire will not rust for many years 3. Many welders or aluminum fabricator can do the installation. Hajj, The installation is very easy. You can even do it once you know it or See someone doing it. Hello Nairababa, Reading the information you gave above; my question is at what point will the installer pour the mixed plastering sand/cement on the barbwire sitting on the cast to hold it strong on the cast. How is it done considering the sharp razor. Is it poured, or hand dressed etc, could you explain please. And how much does each bundle cost. I'm considering buying 12 or 13 for 120/60 standard plot. Thank you. |

lastpage: Aside the issue of "weight" raised by Spyder, you should also be aware that when it comes to Plumbing and Conduit elelctirc wiring, 6" Blocks with holes gives you more flexibility as it can be "easily and delicately" chiselled/troughing (despite its small width) and the pipes placed inside. Same cannot be said of solid 6" blocks and the process of trying to create the same troughs in such blocks to lay pipes, will incur a lot of vibration which will eventually affect the stability of your walls.
That is one if the reason they are used for fences, because it does not need much, if any piping at all, ...so less troughing. (Plumbers and Electricians in the house can buttress my point)
In terms of stability, the solid 6" Block does not provide any extra stability for your building, rather it adds weight! The reason l say this is that such stability is achieved only when the 'depth' of the Block is a certain proportion of the Length and breath and if you notice, the 6" Hollow blocks tend to be fatter (depth) than the solid flat blocks.
Also, when you consider the way we lay blocks here, you will notice that the hollow 6" Block becomes more stable as the Mixed cement/Mortar enters into the cavities (holes within the block), providing added grip as a result of more friction, than when it is just on a flat surface of a 6" solid block.
Let me conclude by issuing a caveat: The above scenario changes when you use a 9" solid block as this provides the needed depth to achieve the same stability or even more, compared to a 9" hollow block.
My opinion is that you save yourself some stress and money, mould 6" hollow blocks and they are as good as any, as long as the sand used is not in excess (32 blocks to a bag, maximum). You will be saving on mortar mix during block work, if you are using 6" hollow Blocks.
My 5cents.
Lastpage! Thanks a lot for fully explaining some of the points sir Spyder made. I will use 6 solid for the fence and hollow for the building. 30/32 per bag. I appreciate everyone here for contributing positively in helping us take this bold steps towards owning a home. I am now moving into this project confidently and will ask relevant questions at every stage. |

spyder880: There is nothing wrong with using 6" solid blocks to build your house. Just make sure the house is designed by an architect so he can balance the load and specify column sizes in consideration to your desired home plan. Thank you sir Spyder; I'm glad you responded. you, Hajj and other gentlemen here are the reason we identify with nairaland. I will engage an architect wey no go charge me so much for the bungalow. However, sir will there be a different consideration/design or effects if I use 6 hollow. Honestly the reason I asked is I wanted a situation were the moulder will just continue moulding same type of block until the contractor say "that's enough block". No excuse of "we don't have 6 hollow moulding machine". |

I wouldn't know if this question have lbeen asked before, so pardon me. I believe it's a general practice to use 6 inch solid block in fencing our homes; is there any risk or harm if I use same 6 inch solid to build a two or three bedroom bungalow house as against using 6 inch hollow. Pls don't chastise me, it's an innocent question. |

adanny01: I really dont think you've been advised properly.
There are a lot of inverters that can handle such loads. The only matter is that the setup cost will be very high which is still comparable to running cost of the traditional diesel generators. A 40kva generator will carry the same load as a 40kva inverter system, the difference is that there will be a specific backup time with the inverter while diesel gives you the expensive flexibility of buying fuel to extend its backup time. If you have the money to do a proper hybrid (solar/grid-tie) backup system, it is far more preferable and convenient.
Besides, with the inverter, you can plan your load demanding appliances to be solar products. There are solar refrigerators, deep freezers, water pumps etc that can cut their power demands in half. An LED tv will save you up to 50% power that a Plasma TV would consume. Also, in designing an inverter system, it is not expected that all loads will be on at the same time. Take for instance the Microwave oven, how many hours in a day will it be required? Cumulatively, hardly an hour of 24.
An inverter system needs a diligent user who will be strict on power saving. An inverter system guarantees you TV viewing time, cold refrigerator or freezers, lighting even in the dead of the night, decent sleep with fan and still friendly to your pocket. You have the option of connecting only chosen loads to inverter and the rest of the loads remain on grid or gen. If there are 14 AC's in the house, you definitely sleep in one room with 1 AC, its a choice to limit the AC's on the inverter. Imagine running out of diesel or servicing at every 200hrs. You may spend like 6k every day depending on grid supply and loading plus 20k service as early as every 8 days if running gen 24/7.
Ask those who relied on generators how their lives changed after turning green, I am a witness. My small gen is covered in dust and cobwebs. adanny01, Thanks for this insightful explanation. Since we have included solar system in this discussion, could you or anyone here give us an approximate estimate of what it can cost someone to have a complete solar system that will comfortably handle these items in a 3 bedroom bungalow. How many solar panel/battery etc. 1. 5 security fence lights (regular energy saving white bulbs) 2. 1 or 2 light bulbs inside the house at same time to save energy) 3. One Television (40 inch flat screen) 4. 1 hp AC or two fans as alternative. 5. Standard Fridge that has small top freezer. 6. Moderate Stereo system. Should I be looking at 1 million, 2 million higher or lesser?. Could you share your experience so far. Once again, thanks for the info. |

mufutau55: You are better with something better so when you decide to put some load on it, it will not deem. I have the one below and it was purchased for N140k before the rise in prices due to forex started. I use it in my BQ, but my friend who had the same uses his own in a 5 Bedrooms Duplex with lights loaded and two AC of 1HP going does nothing to the performance of it. The fuel consumption is very good and lasted more than 14hrs none-stop on a full tank and very, very silent. My said friend love it so much and even bought the 10kva of the same. Very quiet with infrared remote control going thru the wall and distance. Although I intend to buy a standalone 20KVa, this little gem will still be my good backup when that happens. But for now this is a good unit. I have recommended same to some Nairalanders here and they also love it; may be they will see this and testify to it. I think it's around N160k now, but not sure. If you are interested, I can find the dealer info and post it here later.
Hajji M. Oga Hajj and everyone here, Thank you so much for these constructive argument and enlightenment . I have saved pictures of that generator; that's exactly what I need.my level no reach those big diesel generators at allllll for now; I will rather stick with having the circuit breakers that shut off all AC in the house when PHCN behave. we will sleep with fan or at least one horse power AC. I am a realist and strongly believe that self deceit is the worse form of ignorance. I know my level and will go for something that I can easily service, repair and "if" anything happen which I don't pray for, I will not develop BP because of something I bought with hard earned money. I am not in any way discrediting anyone's opinion but what matters is what makes you and family happy and content. BTW solar system will be a must have for me in future; and I will still stick with an affordable capacity that can power all lights, fan, tv and at least one table top fridge. Two things are my priority,1. To ensure light shines both inside the house and the compound 24/7. 2. Have fan/air purifier to sleep with. Other things are secondary. Oga Hajj, how do I recognize a genuine dealer of that generator and avoid imitation. Once again, thanks everyone as we keep the thread rolling for information purposes... chai, I didn't even know say the thing go Comot this numerous responses. |

Hajj....Prayer is the key to all things. Welcome back though.
Guys, while I wait to see pictures of the iron doors been done for one of us here, I have a question for those who know much about generator. I understand solar is the "in thing" now and very beneficial as I hope to install it someday. However, Generator is still the most popular alternative to PHCN now and few years to come. The questions is, what capacity and make (original) of generator could you recommend for a 5 bedroom duplex, We don't intend to use it to run AC, and freezer. Just basic lights, fan for each room, and Television. I've heard of 2.5 kva, 4, up to 8kva. Any heavy power equipment should be excluded when considering or responding to this. Good number of fence security lights (normal energy saving bulbs). The idea is to have circuit breaker or anything that will automatically shut AC off and manually turned back on for each room. Is this a good idea or not. Thanks for your willingness to share your knowledge and experience. |

Or better still ask people in portharcourt who are into door fabrication if the imported pressed steel plates are in Port Harcourt, then you can buy and get a good welder to construct the doors for you.
