Nairaland GeneralRe: Dark Mode, UI Facelift, & Minimum Character Rule by Truths9ja: 10:47am On Oct 09, 2025
Seun:
Dear Nairalanders,

We are ramping things up. Here are some things we have done recently:

1. We gave Nairaland's theme a little facelift, fixing buttons, pagination, separators, and other little things.

2. We implemented a dark mode for Nairaland with the most intuitive UX: a sun toggle on your upper right.

3. We further relaxed the minimum character rule because many people were still struggling with it.

We are also trying to make our moderation bot (aka antispam bot) more accurate. Bear with us on that.

What else do you want us to work on?

Best Regards.
oga seun , what of the banning time. Kindly limit it to 1 year ban. 10 years isn't unjustifiable bro. Kudos to your work boss

Is that all you chose to see?
it is well stated there; The AWORI (Yoruba sub-group), along with other early settlers such as the Benin and Brazilian returnees.

Three groups were mentioned categorically.
So its means only the Aworis, Benin and the other group can lay claim to Lagos; NOT the Egbas, or Ijebus NOR the okans or any other Yoruba sub group.
Know this and know peace.
Aworis are not sideline in Lagos State government.

Pengassan in trouble as student starts protest in Ibadan to support Dangote

Students from the National Association of Oduduwa Students, Coalition of Yoruba Students, and Yoruba Movement are staging a peaceful protest in Oyo State to show solidarity with the Dangote Refinery. The protest comes amid a faceoff between the refinery and oil unions, including the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG)

The students are backing the Dangote Refinery in its dispute with the unions, which began after PENGASSAN directed its members to cut off crude oil and gas supplies to the refinery. The union's action followed the refinery's decision to sack over 800 workers, which the union deemed anti-labour .

*Key Developments:*

- *Protests and Demonstrations*: Students and other groups have taken to the streets to show support for the Dangote Refinery, citing its potential to boost the economy and create jobs.

- *Union Dispute*: PENGASSAN has directed its members to halt crude oil and gas supplies to the refinery, warning of a nationwide strike if its demands are not met.

- *Government Intervention*: The Nigerian government has stepped in to mediate the dispute, with the Minister of Labour and Employment urging both parties to negotiate .

The Dangote Refinery, a key player in Nigeria's efforts to achieve energy self-sufficiency, has been facing challenges from oil unions and regulators. Students and other supporters argue that the refinery's success is crucial for the country's economic growth and development .

Irony1:
Be very specific, it belongs to the Awori who are indigenous to Lagos. So any Awori or Egba or Ijebu or Ekiti whose ancestral home is not within the boundaries of Lagos has no stake in Lagos and as such Lagos doesn't belong to them.
gentleman, I don hear you.funny enough, igbo men and women don represent Lagos State in the green chamber before and the Lagos State house of Assembly too. Lagos State is a Yoruba State and will continue to rule by a Yoruba man.

Governor Mobolaji Johnson Declares: “Lagos Is Not a No Man’s Land”

A 1970 Statement Affirming the Indigenous Identity of Lagos State

The image displays the front page of the Daily Times newspaper dated Thursday, September 17, 1970, featuring the bold headline: “LAGOS IS NOT A ‘NO MAN’S LAND,’ SAYS JOHNSON.” The headline captures a historic declaration by Brigadier Mobolaji Johnson, the first military governor of Lagos State, addressing a long-debated perception regarding the ownership and identity of Lagos.

Governor Johnson’s statement was made in response to growing claims among some Nigerians that Lagos, due to its cosmopolitan nature and rapid urban growth, belonged to no particular group or people. As Nigeria’s former federal capital and a melting pot of ethnicities, Lagos had become a hub of migration and diversity. However, Johnson sought to correct the misconception that this diversity erased its indigenous roots.

In his statement, Governor Johnson firmly asserted that Lagos was not a “no man’s land”, but rather the homeland of its original inhabitants—the Awori, a Yoruba subgroup—along with other early settlers such as the Benin and Brazilian returnees. He emphasized that the cultural and historical identity of Lagos must be respected even as it evolved into a national and international urban center.

The newspaper article also reported Johnson’s rejection of proposals to carve out portions of Lagos State as a separate Federal Capital Territory. He described such suggestions as “unreasonable and impracticable,” insisting that Lagos must retain its integrity as a state. His argument reflected both a defense of local heritage and a pragmatic stance on governance, coming just months after the end of the Nigerian Civil War in 1970—a period when national unity and state identity were major political themes.

Governor Johnson’s administration, which lasted from 1967 to 1975, was instrumental in shaping Lagos into a modern metropolis. Under his leadership, Lagos State was created following the state-creation exercise of May 27, 1967, which divided Nigeria into twelve states. His government prioritized infrastructure development, urban planning, and civic administration, while also advocating for the recognition of Lagos’s indigenous population and its historical lineage.

The Daily Times article from September 1970 thus captures more than a political statement—it reflects an early assertion of cultural ownership and identity within post-colonial Nigeria. Johnson’s remarks continue to resonate in contemporary debates about belonging and heritage in Lagos, a city that remains the country’s economic and cultural heartbeat.
