PoliticsPopular Nigeria Blogger Loses Appeal, Ordered To Pay £100k Damages To Dr Olukoya by Truths9ja(op): 7:11pm On Feb 02
Popular Nigeria blogger loses appeal, ordered to pay £100000 damages to daniel Olukoya, wife

A United Kingdom High Court of Appeal has upheld earlier rulings against UK-based blogger Maureen Badejo, ordering her to pay £100,000 in damages to the founder of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), Daniel Olukoya, and his wife, Folashade, after losing a defamation suit.

In April 2021, the Queen’s Bench Division of the UK High Court of Justice ordered Ms Badejo to pay £65,000 to Olukoya and £35,000 to his wife over defamatory publications made on her social media platforms.

The court also directed her to publicly retract the defamatory statements and publish a summary of the judgment on her social media platforms for a period of 10 consecutive days as a corrective measure and as a means of ensuring that her “misguided and misinformed audience” gets to know about the court’s Decision.

Ms Badejo, the proprietor of Gio TV, was accused of using Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram to blackmail Dr Olukoya and the church. She had alleged that the cleric and his ministry defrauded the United States Government by selling books in the country without paying due taxes.

She also claimed that an MFM pastor in the UK paid £150,000 into Olukoya’s personal account and later travelled to Nigeria to seek assistance in covering up fraud.

Delivering judgment in the appeal, Justice Lavender of the UK High Court of Appeal, Queen’s Bench Division, affirmed the earlier decisions in suit number QB-2020-003625.

The judge upheld the orders made by Master Thormett on April 13, 2021, and February 3, 2022, and dismissed Ms Badejo’s appeal in its entirety.

Justice Lavender ruled that the online publications concerning Dr Olukoya and his wife were false and defamatory, noting that the allegations lacked any factual basis.

He further refused Ms Badejo permission to appeal, holding that her application failed to meet the required legal threshold.

He stated that the application lacked merit and that, under CPR 52.4(3), the decision could not be reconsidered at an oral hearing.
“Insofar as the defendant seeks permission to appeal against Master Thormett’s order of 3 February 2022, her proposed grounds of appeal are both hopeless and pointless,” the court held.

The court stressed that individuals are entitled to protection against defamatory publications and warned that false accusations circulated online attract legal consequences. It added that freedom of expression does not extend to publishing false statements capable of damaging reputations.

Meanwhile, on February 9, 2021, an Ogun State High Court in Nigeria also ruled against Ms Badejo, ordering her to pay N500m in damages to MFM and its General Overseer for defamation.

The Nigerian suit, filed in September 2020, sought N10Bn in aggravated and exemplary damages. While delivering judgment, Justice Abiodun Akinyemi ordered the blogger to remove and delete the offending online publications and to issue a written apology and retraction on her social media platforms and in at least three national newspapers.

The judge described her actions as “reckless defamation” and an “evil use of the internet and social media.”

IMPEACHMENT THREAT: APC LEADERS FORUM BACKS FUBARA, URGES NASS TO TAKE OVER RIVERS ASSEMBLY

The forum said the call became necessary due to what it described as the continuous abuse of legislative powers and repeated attempts by the Rivers State House of Assembly to impeach the governor, actions it claimed have eroded the Assembly’s credibility, legitimacy and public trust.

The ultimatum, which took effect from January 23, 2026, was directed at the Federal Ministry of Health and other relevant authorities, urging them to implement the report without further delay in line with established precedents in the health sector.

PoliticsRe: Power, Palaces And Politics: The Hidden Messages Behind Oyo’s Visits To Aso Rock by Truths9ja(op): 8:50pm On Jan 23
Hmm 🤔 Oyo State politics is very deep. What fayose said yesterday is just a fiction of lies and propaganda.

PoliticsPower, Palaces And Politics: The Hidden Messages Behind Oyo’s Visits To Aso Rock by Truths9ja(op): 8:48pm On Jan 23
POWER, PALACES AND POLITICS: THE HIDDEN MESSAGES BEHIND OYO’S VISITS TO ASO ROCK

Oyo state, Governor Seyi Makinde’s recent visit to President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has continued to generate ripples beyond the walls of Aso Rock. Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, added his own interpretation by sharing a version of what allegedly transpired during that meeting on his social media handle.

But the story did not end there.
In January 2026, Governor Makinde had inaugurated a reconstituted 41-member Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, introducing a rotational chairmanship system to replace the former permanent arrangement of having the Alaafin as chairman.

Under this new order, leadership of the council now alternates every two years among three foremost royal fathers: the Alaafin of Oyo, the Olubadan of Ibadanland and the Soun of Ogbomoso.

Gov. Seyi immediately appointed the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba (Senator) Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, a long-term political ally of President Bola Tinubu, as the first chairman under this historic rotation.

Barely 24 hours after Governor Makinde’s visit to the President and Fayose’s public narration of events, the Chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, the Olubadan himself, also paid a visit to President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

For keen observers, the timing is intriguing.

If there are even traces of truth in Fayose’s story, then the Olubadan’s visit naturally invites deeper reflection.

Was it a routine courtesy call? A symbolic royal gesture? Or a subtle political reassurance amid swirling narratives?

Yet, in the true spirit of Nigerian political theatre, there is little cause for alarm. Perhaps, as usual, Uncle Fayose will once again step forward to interpret the meaning of this visit for the public.

Until then, what remains clear is this: in the delicate dance between power, tradition and politics, no visit to Aso Rock is ever just “ordinary.”

Wike is losing the battle... 😱

Tinubu just affirmed Fubara's leadership of the APC in Rivers State.

Fubara is going to get automatic ticket in APC.

Wike doesn't have access to Rivers oil funds.

His PDP is now fragmented and can't be used to make any bargain.

He's now totally at the grace of President Tinubu.

HOW 26 PRO-WIKE RIVERS LAWMAKERS RECEIVED N350MILLION EACH FOR CONSTITUENCY PROJECTS NEVER EXECUTED

The payments, totaling approximately ₦10.5 billion, were approved and released on September 12, 2025, according to financial records reviewed by SaharaReporters.

Documents obtained by SaharaReporters from a source inside the Rivers State Government House have revealed that at least 26 lawmakers aligned with former Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike received ₦350 million each in September 2025 for constituency projects during the period of emergency rule in Rivers State.

Yet none of the projects have been implemented in their respective constituencies, government sources told SaharaReporters.

The payments, totaling approximately ₦10.5 billion, were approved and released on September 12, 2025, according to financial records reviewed by SaharaReporters.

The payments, totaling approximately ₦10.5 billion, were approved and released on September 12, 2025, according to financial records reviewed by SaharaReporters.

However, investigations indicate that most of the companies nominated by the lawmakers to execute the projects are either inactive, dormant, or suspected shell companies.

How the Funds Were Approved

SaharaReporters obtained a formal memo dated September 12, 2026, signed by Engr. Atemea K. Briggs, Special Adviser on Works, addressed to then Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (rtd.), requesting approval for ₦10.5 billion as constituency project funds for 30 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The memo explicitly sought ₦350 million for each lawmaker under the guise of executing constituency projects in 2025.

The document stated in part, “The purpose of this Memorandum is to seek His Excellency’s approval for the year 2025 constituency projects for thirty (30) constituency projects for thirty (30) Honourable members of the Rivers State House of Assembly at the total cost of ₦10,500,000,000.00 (Ten Billion, Five Hundred Million Naira) only, being ₦350,000,000.00 (Three Hundred and Fifty Million Naira) only per member.”

The memo claimed the funding was in response to lawmakers’ “desire to bring governance closer to their constituents,” and listed proposed projects submitted by 26 out of 30 lawmakers.

Records show that approval was granted the same day, September 12, 2025, and funds were subsequently disbursed into accounts linked to companies presented by the legislators.

Evidence of Payment

SaharaReporters reviewed a statement of account confirming that at least 26 lawmakers received ₦350 million each through their nominated contractors.

Despite this, on-site checks and local reports suggest that none of the listed constituency projects have been executed.

Sources within the government alleged that many of the beneficiary companies either do not exist physically, have no operational records, or were hastily incorporated shortly before the payment.

List of Approved Constituency Projects As Submitted

The memorandum approved on September 12, 2025 contained a detailed schedule of constituency projects and the private firms nominated by the lawmakers to execute them. SaharaReporters obtained the full list, which shows that each project was tied to a specific company presented by the affected legislators.

The projects and their designated contractors include: Abua/Odual: Building and furnishing of a cottage hospital at Emago Kugbo - Margoy Integrated Services; Akuku-Toru I: Construction of 700 meters concrete pavement road in Abonnema and Obonoma towns - Smooth Global Services Ltd; Akuku-Toru II: Construction of police quarters at Kula Community - Trust Optima Multiventures Ltd; Andoni: Ultra-modern town hall and furnishing at Ikuru Town - Skypye Link Nig. Despite these approvals, SaharaReporters could not verify the execution of any of these projects.

Background

Rivers State was placed under emergency rule in March 2025 following a violent political conflict between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

On September 17, 2025, President Bola Tinubu lifted the emergency rule, effective from midnight.

Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the State House of Assembly were scheduled to resume official duties from September 18, 2025. Fubara physically returned to Port Harcourt on September 19, 2025, where he was welcomed by supporters before resuming work at Government House.

Impeachment Proceedings Begin

On January 8, 2026, SaharaReporters reported that impeachment proceedings were formally initiated against Governor Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.

During a plenary session presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, Majority Leader Major Jack read allegations of gross misconduct against the governor.

At least 26 lawmakers signed the notice of impeachment, which the House claimed was in line with constitutional provisions. Amaewhule announced that the notice would be served on Governor Fubara within seven days.

A separate impeachment notice was also read against Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu by Deputy Majority Leader Linda Stewart.

Twists and U-Turns in the Impeachment Plot

After the initial move, four lawmakers temporarily withdrew their support, calling for political dialogue instead of impeachment.

However, days later, the same lawmakers reversed their position, insisting that the impeachment process must continue.

Alaafin considers lawsuit over rotational leadership

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, is considering legal action over the rotational leadership of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs. The controversy began when Governor Seyi Makinde inaugurated the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, as chairman, citing a rotational system among the Alaafin, Olubadan, and Soun of Ogbomoso .

The Alaafin denies being consulted on the rotational chairmanship, claiming Governor Makinde's statement is inaccurate. The palace asserts that the Alaafin's position was communicated to the governor via a memo from the Oyo Council of Elders .

Some groups, like the Oyo Scholars Congress and Oyo Global Forum, back the Alaafin's stance, seeing the rotational system as a distortion of Yoruba history and an erosion of the Alaafin's status .

An Ogun monarch, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, has cautioned the Alaafin to avoid confrontation with the government, warning of potential consequences .
