Soroka hospital in the southern Israeli city of Beersheba has been hit by a ballistic missile, Israeli officials have said, after Iran launched its latest wave of retaliatory airstrikes on the country.

Unverified footage on social media showed people running through corridors filled with dust and detritus and doctors standing outside amid wreckage from the building.

“BREAKING: A direct hit has been reported at Soroka Hospital in Beersheba, southern Israel. More details to follow,” the foreign ministry posted on X.

A spokesperson for the hospital reported “damage to the hospital and extensive damage in various areas. We are currently assessing the damage, including injuries. We ask the public not to come to the hospital at this time.”

Sirens sounded across the country earlier, and Israeli media reported that several loud blasts were also heard in central Israel with several other direct hits reported. Explosions were heard over Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

Several buildings in Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science, one of the country’s top research centers, were damaged in an Iranian strike but there were no casualties, its management told its community members. As a result of missile strikes early this morning in the city of Rehovot, where the institute is located, there were localized impacts to structures on campus, it said.

The institute is a world-renowned research center known for cutting-edge work in chemistry, physics and biomedical science. One graduate student whose home is located near the institute said she heard some very loud booms and then an impact that violently shook her bomb shelter.

Israeli rescue crews in Ramat Gan, a city on the eastern edge of Tel Aviv, picked through rubble on June 14 after Iran’s retaliatory missile and drone strikes, triggered by Israel’s attack on Iranian soil in the early hours of June 13.

Israel’s air strikes on June 13 killed at least 78 people, including 20 children and over 300 were injured in Iran, while Iran’s retaliation killed at least 3 people and injured over 91 in Israel.

Iran launched Operation True Promise III on June 13 against Israel, sending a barrage of missiles and drones in retaliation against the latter's airstrikes which hit key military and nuclear installations of the former. Iran specifically targeted HaKirya or The Kirya compound (The Campus in Hebrew) in central Tel Aviv, Israel's premier military headquarters.

The military compound includes landmark structures such as the Marganit and Matcal Towers, which coordinate military planning, intelligence gathering, and operational command.

The Kirya is one of the most sensitive and heavily guarded sites in Israel, essential for national security and military coordination.

Palestinians held funerals Monday for 15 medics and emergency responders killed by Israeli troops in southern Gaza, after their bodies and mangled ambulances were found buried in an impromptu mass grave, apparently plowed over by Israeli military bulldozers.

The Palestinian Red Crescent says the slain workers and their vehicles were clearly marked as medical and humanitarian personnel and accused Israeli troops of killing them “in cold blood.”

The dead included eight Red Crescent workers, six members of Gaza’s Civil Defense emergency unit and a staffer from UNRWA, the U.N.’s agency for Palestinians. The International Red Cross/Red Crescent said it was the deadliest attack on its personnel in eight years.

Since the war in Gaza began 18 months ago, Israel has killed more than 100 Civil Defense workers and more than 1,000 health workers, according to the U.N.

Donald Trump is facing a backlash on his Truth Social platform after sharing an AI-created video of him sipping cocktails with a topless Benjamin Netanyahu in Gaza, in a future imagining of the Palestinian territory devastated by Israel’s war.

The video presented a computer-generated vision of Trump’s property development plan for Gaza, under which he said he wants to “clean out” the population of about 2 million people. Named the “Riviera of the Middle East” plan, the proposal has been criticised as a blueprint for ethnic cleansing.

One Truth Social user wrote: “I could not be a bigger supporter of President Trump but this particular video is in very poor taste. Very poor taste, indeed!” Another wrote: “I hate this. I love our president, but this is horrible.”

The video might have gone down particularly badly with Trump’s Christian supporters, with several comments referencing the idolatry of the golden statue, and others lamenting a scene showing Trump in a nightclub alone with a woman dressed as a bellydancer as a crowd looks on.

One account, with the name Kainoa P, wrote: “You’re doing great Mr President. But don’t let it get to your head. God put you in that position for His glory, not yours.”

Israel is fighting allegations of genocide in Gaza, where it has killed nearly 50,000 people, mostly civilians, in the war that began with an attack by Hamas on 7 October 2023. The international criminal court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Hamas’s military leader, Mohammed Deif, on allegations of war crimes.

Palestinian leaders were not consulted on Trump’s latest plan, while influential Middle Eastern countries, including Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, have rejected it outright.
