By EMMA UJAH, Abuja Bureau Chief President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, expressed his frustration in the fight against corruption in the country, over what he described as a retrogressive system through which the society rewards corrupt people, rather than punish them. Addressing the Nigerian Economic Society’s 54th Annual Conference, in Abuja, President Jonathan lamented that corruption has permeated both public and private sectors and has continued to hamper the nation’s desired accelerated development because members of the society were used to celebrating corrupt people. President Jonathan who admitted fear of being attacked, said he would not mention names, but urged all good-spirited members of the society to join the fight against corruption which he said must not be left to the government alone. President Goodluck Jonathan His words: “When you talk about corruption, the private sector is involved; the public sector is involved; even the individuals, including other societies, and I wouldn’t want to mention names so that I will not be attacked. “But I know that if collectively all of us don’t reward corruption, people would not be attracted to corrupt practices, but when we all reward corruption, then of course, we will be tempted to go in that direction. “I want a society where all of us will frown against people who come up with what they are not supposed to have. “If a young man who just started a job and within six months or a year comes up with a car of N7m to N15m and you clap for him, then you are rewarding corruption. “So for us as a nation to bring corruption down in Nigeria, it’s not just blaming government or blaming police, but all individuals must frown at people who have what they are not supposed to have, who live in houses they supposed not to live in; who drive cars they are not supposed to drive and who wear suits more expensive they can afford. “And until we, as Nigerians are able to do this, then invariably we are all rewarding corruption and until we stop that, I don’t think we will get to where we want to go .” The President promised to pursue policies under his transformation agenda with a view to making corruption unattractive to public officers. “We believe that we should not create an environment where people would be tempted to take what belongs to the public because that is why even in the fertiliser business we talked about electronic wallet, e-Wallet, so that funds are not exposed to corrupt people,” he said. According to him, his administration was strengthening anti-corruption institutions and Federal Government policies under which it has become easier for workers to own cars and their own houses were targeted at reducing corruption by eliminating the pressure for the acquisition of those properties on civil servants. - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/09/our-society-rewards-corrupt-people-jonathan-laments/#sthash.7TpPBTTI.dpuf |
Pandemonium was averted yesterday at Bridge Head, Onitsha, when a female police officer, Inspector Tochukwu Offoegbu, was abused, molested and almost stripped naked by a dreaded wealthy man, (name withheld) who allegedly slapped the Commissioner of Police last year. An eye witness and a tout, who gave his name as Tunde, said Offoegbu was on duty when the ‘big man,’ who owns a park in Onitsha, approached her, allegedly telling her that he would facilitate her removal from Onitsha as he did to one Archibong. He said the female police officer demanded to know what she did that would warrant her removal, so he gave her a slap for daring him. Also, his boys allegedly tore the female officer’s uniform, leaving her almost naked. ‘’She ran for her life into the Police post to avoid the peering eyes of the public before the Area Commander Benjamin Nwordu asked all of them to come to the area police station, Onitsha. ‘’That man cannot be arrested because last time he slapped the Commissioner of police because of park matters and so the governor closed the park and now, it is an Inspector. I fear,” said Tunde. When contacted, the DPO Fegge, where Offoegbu works , Muikdi Shehu, said he would not speak on the matter, insisting that the PPRO is the only person authorized to speak. The PPRO, Emeka Chukwuemeka, when contacted on phone said he was with the Onitsha Area Commander and would get back to this reporter on the issue. CP Balah Nassarawa was said to be out of the state as at the time of going to the press. Reacting, another eyewitness and Campaign for Democracy Coordinator, Dede Uzor A Uzor, demanded for the immediate arrest of the accused and thorough investigation into the matter with a view to punishing the offender to deter future occurrence. CD gave the Commissioner of Police seven days to arrest the man or face human rights groups protest and call for his removal as that was the height of abuse of an officer on duty, particularly a woman. |

A[b] professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Ilorin, Yasir Quadri, at the weekend said Boko Haram, a radical Islamist insurgent group, is not an agent of Islam, but the handiwork of the destructive Nigerian politicians. The don consequently acknowledged that if Nigeria would know peace, the Nigerian politicians should resolve to achieve their ambition, not through manipulation of religion, but by becoming nation builders. He disclosed this at his inaugural lecture titled, All In The Name Of God, delivered at the university, noting that Boko Haram members “are not justifiably fighting in the name of Allah”. "Nigerians need mutual understanding to move the country forward. Everybody is entitled to freedom guaranteed under section 38 of the 1999 Constitution just as everybody is free to propagate his/her religion either overtly or covertly on others". Quadri noted that members of the Boko Haram group who have been extreme about religious intolerance are doing what offends both the Qur’an and constitution of the country. The provision of the constitution of the country on religion state is in line with that of the Qur'an”. He said that the demands and mode of operation of Boko Haram are not Islamic, adding that the stand of the Nigerian 1999 Constitution “agrees totally to the view of the Qur'an on multi-religious community." “Qur'an 10:99-100 makes it clear that it is the wish of Allah not to make everybody a Muslim. He has given everybody the choice to choose which religion he/she wants to adopt. Qur'an 2:256 was emphatic on the issue of freedom of religion and it reads: There is no compulsion in religion. “Verily, the right path has become distinct from the wrong path... From these Quranic Verses it is clear that Boko Haram cannot claim to be an Islamic organisation. Neither can it claim to be guided by the Tradition of Prophet Muhammad”. BOKO HARAM VS ISLAM ISLAM: There is no compulsion in religion. BOKO HARAM: Everyone must adhere to our ways else… ISLAM: Love all and be just to all regardless of religion. BOKO HARAM: If you are not with us you are against us. ISLAM: Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) lived with peaceful Christians and Jews as his neighbors. BOKO HARAM: All non-Muslims must leave the North. ISLAM: You are only permitted to protect yourselves when you are attacked first. And you should retaliate justly but if u leave everything to Allah it is better for you. BOKO HARAM: We attack all who stand in our way ISLAM: A Muslim is one whom his community is safe from his tongue and hands. BOKO HARAM: We do not care your religion. Muslim or Christian we will crush any who stands in our way. ISLAM: Innocent Killing is a great sin. Allah has ordered us not to do it! No human being has the right to take life. BOKO HARAM: Allah will understand. He will not punish us, but give us virgins in heaven ISLAM: When there is a war, Women and children must not be touched. Talk less of when there is no war. BOKO HARAM: We kill and kidnap men, women and children. ISLAM: When there is a war, all non-Muslims that run into their places of worship or their homes will not be harmed. Talk less of when there is no war. BOKO HARAM: We bomb non-Muslims in their places of worship. We also bomb Muslims in their places of worship and homes if we feel they are a threat to us. So who really are these people with warped ideologies and intents? I may not know what they are really out to achieve but I do know for sure they do not represent Islam. Rather, they are acting contrary to it in most cases. THIS IS INDEED AN EYE OPENER FOR THOSE WHO SEEK TRUTH! WE MUST WORK TOGETHER, REGARDLESS OF TRIBE AND RELIGION IF WE WISH TO PROVIDE A BETTER TOMORROW FOR ALL....Stop the Misconception, Muslims aren't Terrorists. May Allah help us all! From a concerned muslim... |
The Gunners London rivals, defeated Benfica 2-1 in the finals played at the Amsterdam ArenA, but the Frenchman was not impressed and called for UEFA to stop clubs from dropping into the Europa League from the Champions League. When he was asked if Chelsea winning the trophy made him jealous, he replied: “No, no. You just wonder once again, you have two teams who are basically in the final who were in the Champions League. “We raised that question many times at UEFA. “Is it right to reward teams basically for failure? Their target at the start of the season was the Champions League, not to win the Europa League. “The teams who go through to the last 16 of the Champions League don’t have a chance afterwards. “If I had won the Europa League like Chelsea, I’d have been happy as well. |
