Honeysweetest:IRCC stress. I remember once contacting a licensed immigration lawyer about the spousal sponsorship process. The man said he was going to bill me $4,500 and also sent me a long set of requirements and the wait time was over a year. I just told my partner to consider writing IELTS and enter the express entry pool as I moved to Canada via express entry and was conversant with the process. Spouse sponsorship looked complex to me even though everyone says its easy. She eventually got PR via express entry and through the process people were telling her to just do spouse sponsorship as express entry is hard. Upon landing the CBSA officer too told her that she could have just applied into the family class program 4 Likes |

Kcenyimbk:I'm not sure why you're being asked for the slip. Get a licensed immigration lawyer to draft a response to the procedural fairness letter for you. What I see here is the visa officer having doubts and looking for loopholes in your application. Its okay to forget a visa refusal 7 years ago. |

pansophist:Going to study abroad for the purpose of upskilling is great. Going to canada as a student without money is like hell. I studied in UK about 10 years ago when the exchange rate was about 270 and I had a very good time. The struggle I see students in canada go through is not worth it and very unfair of the country to offer such abysmal study experience to internation students who pay so much. Canada has a skilled worker program (express entry) that makes it possible for highly skilled professionals to come into the country and employers tend to hire these candidates based on their skills and experiences. International students with no experience are usually not able to compete with these candidates in the job market and end up struggling. As for adult students who moved en mass in 2021-2023 only time will tell if the Canadian immigration system does not axe them 11 Likes 1 Share |

tensazangetsu20:Never. I came to canada as a single person aged 30 with a professional job offer in hand and support from friends but I still struggled. I slept on my friend's sofa for 3 weeks before moving to an Air bnB (after earning my first paycheck). Stayed in a basement for one month. Then moved to another air bnb (room in a chinese couple home) where I stayed for 3 months. I could not compete for apartment rental for 4 months. All rental applications were rejected due to skin color, lack of canadian rental history, credit history and low credit score. The only landlord that accepted my application in the 4th month demanded for 5 months rent upfront. I can't imagine going through this with dependents. It was not easy. 25 Likes 4 Shares |

tensazangetsu20:After living in UK and Canada , I'd say Canada is less rough for a skilled immigrant. If you are patient, hardworking and a good planner it is quite easy to get stable in Canada. Express entry rules are clear which can be used to get permission to live and work in canada. After that, one can move to Canada with money + skills and battle out the job market and gradually build. Problem with our culture is the love for doing things anyhow without planning. Thus you can find someone dealing with spouse, children, immigration, financial and career issues all at the same time in foreign country. 6 Likes 2 Shares |

LyfeJennings:The opportunity will always be there if you can align your skills to what is obtainable where you want to go to. In US/Canada for instance cash is a liability hence bankers do everything possible to extend good credit. In Nigeria its the other way round (mobilize deposits/restrict credit). In addition, marketing in these developed countries are data driven. As of when I left the bank I was working at, there was not BI team or system on ground. Hence I don't even know how these deposits are mobilized with leads. Hence learning the systems is also a good way to start and begin to streamline. In the bank then software applications were constantly modified to suit the needs of big companies in a very unprofessional manner. Even when you ask for time to figure out the implications of a change, the marketers will escalate up to the line director who will overrule the head of technology. As a result systems were always failing, work stretched into the night on an almost daily basis, saturday + sunday work was normal and everyone was tired. To be able to get this jobs we all had to do a lot of learning outside to complement our day to day work. They use to say once you became an AGM you were made. Before there very eyes a DGM in IT resigned. To get a car loan one needed to have worked at least 10 years except if they joined the bank at a senior grade. Imagine a car loan of less than 2M after working 10 years lol . |

LyfeJennings:Lol. Not really. I was a software developer in the bank. The stress was just too much coming from human factors. Marketing constantly attacking and condemning members of the dev team, unprofessional practices and all. 80% - 90% of the dev team members I worked with quit the banking space. One even got a job in sierra leone that paid her $4,000 a month while the bank was still paying her 200k plus. Small experience (barely 1 year) I got in the E-payment system unit paved way for a dollar paying gig. Some moved to nairobi, kigali and were all earning 4 or 5 times their bank pay. After covid (2021 upwards) European and US companies began to hire developers from Africa in large numbers and most of us moved again ( I was in Johannesburg then). Got a software gig in Toronto and moved again. Our bosses at the bank who were so used to the system to spending multiple years on one level and playing politics (praising the bosses) became bitter that people they trained are now earning much more than them. Those banks are actually destroying young people. 1 Like 1 Share |

LyfeJennings:I'm not saying you would have moved from BO to Manager in 23 years (2001 - 2024) lol. I meant in 18 months. You still made a good move. Banking in Nigeria today is not sound professionally for the staff and is not likely to change anytime soon because the banks are making money and planting there people in government. Zenith bank ex GM is now the VP. A zenith bank ex-GM is not the MD of either NIPC or NEPC. Ex Zenith DGM is now the MD of NPA. An ex zenith MD was CBN gov till 2023. An ex Zenith GM is also serving as minister of trade or so. At the state level they are also there. Mind you these are people that worked with Jim Ovia directly when he was GMD/CEO. Current breed of MDs are not match |

LyfeJennings:If you were a BO in 2001, you may have been promoted from BO to AM and Manager in 18 months. It was not unusual to start out at 25 and be a senior manager by 35. I'm sorry to say but your direct manager ought to have moved on to another bank or another sector. During my orientation at a bank as a newbie, one of the executive directors came to speak to us. We were 72. 69 contract staff and 3 permanent staff (my self and two others). One of the recruit contract staff asked him about this contract arrangement where you have people being on contract endlessly and even permanent staff spending many years on one level. He responded professionally but ended by saying "If I were you I wouldn't be a contract staff for 4 years". The signs were there to see but many prefer to get stuck in the system and continue to complain. GMs are treated like Gods. EDs are treated like the owners of the universe. Timing is what made these people rise fast. Nothing special about them and today anytime I'm in Nigeria I meet with my former GMs and DGMs. I tell them about things we are doing and how they can improve there software development practices as well as run better systems. When I was in the bank I could stand outside a GM's office waiting endlessly. In their eyes a junior staff is worse than the floormat or trash. A bank MD once told me not to join a bank at any grade level below a manager. I learnt it the hard way after joining a bank as a junior staff. Glad I was able to exit the system after a short stint. When I wanted to leave the bank I got offers from two other banks which I turned down because I felt the issues will be similar. I set my eyes on jobs abroad not because I didn't like Nigeria but I disliked that servitude culture. I never saw most of my bosses as superior to me and never felt inferior to them. 1 Like |

LyfeJennings:Adora is a special staff of Zenith bank. Her deposit mobilization strength is unmatched and she rose pretty fast but the owner of the bank (Jim Ovia) deliberately kept her as Deputy MD with supervisory role over a lot zones/branches and she was never under any CEO . Jim ovia was her CEO over the years lol. It was only normal that at some point she emerged CEO but when it comes to areas of banking outside deposit mobilization, time will tell how her tenure will be. |
Business / Re: Profile Of Adaora Umeoji, Zenith Bank’s First Female Group Managing Director by tshtsh: 2:22pm On Mar 20 |
LyfeJennings:Staff resign on their own. Its got a good brand hence easy to use as a transit point. She rose through the ranks by consistently meeting her deposit target. As you know banking has other roles outside deposit mobilization. This was one of the reasons why she never worked out of the office in Lagos. Her role was basically public fund mobilization which she did well going by the rent seeking system Nigeria operates. A lot of hardworking staff lose confidence in the system and leave. The ones who are loyal usually end up regretting. The mathematics is simple. I joined a bank at the age of 25 as an executive assistant. I was told then that it takes 4 or 5 years to move to the next level. Which meant if I was not exceptional, I would have stayed till age 29 to move to the next level. It didn't make sense to me and I noticed they operated a strict hierarchy system where it is assumed that you know nothing if you are below a manager and all that. Hence I resigned after 1 year and 2 months. Got a job at a Fintech in Johannesburg where I worked for one year before I got another job in Toronto and moved to Canada. People are stuck on one grade for 9 years (for instance deputy managers unable to move to manager or Senior managers unable to move to AGM rank). Everyone is just stuck and the banks don't care. But I also expect that people should care for themselves and know when to exit. There was a time people spent 6 months on one grade level before being promoted. The beneficiaries of those days are the present day directors in many banks. 3 Likes |

Can her profile be compared to that of Herbert Wigwe ? Ebenezer Onyeagwu ? Peter Amangbo ? Adesola Adeduntan ? Ebitimi Banigo ? Fola Adeola ?
