Profgordons:In 2021 while waiting for my application processing to be completed I came to realize that the govt deals with numbers. The EE program started in 2015 and as with any new program the early applicants made it through with consistent bi-weekly draws/less competition which saw 430s get an ITA. Today the express entry program has gone past its early phase and is now very competitive with the government now at will to change the bar at anytime without any communication. I used the word change the bar because when I was waiting for ITA they made changes that granted additional 50 points to bilingual applicants. This pushed up the scores to 478. Prior to that CECs were granted an edge with the 27,000 ITAs issued in 2021 which even saw a CEC applicant with a score below 100 get an ITA while applicants with 465s remained spectators. May the hardwork of all intending immigrants via this program come to fruition. The program is now very competitive and if scores remain above 481 then one will need a connection to canada (sibling points, canadian work experience or canadian education) to qualify for EE. 6 Likes |

donestk:It depends on the individual and what they got where they are going to. For instance I was invited to apply for permanent residency under the Canadian express entry program. I applied and the application was approved after about one year. It granted me access to the Canadian job market and I got a software engineering job at a US company which had some of its development teams in Toronto. I moved to Toronto a few weeks after and started earning barely two weeks after while also working on some interesting process automation projects. I consider it a career progression. I don’t see it as relocation per say because if a similar opportunity/offer was available to me in Nigeria I’ll probably have been in Nigeria today 5 Likes |

Vafrica: Also ask your sibling to send you a scanned copy of his/her PR card (back and front). I know of a person who was unable to complete his express entry application because he claimed sibling point and received ITA. When it was time to submit application the sibling began to drag his feet and refused to send the scanned copy of the card |

Successful Express entry candidates usually have some work experience and a permanent stay visa which makes it difficult to employers to underpay them the way they do to international students requiring one year work experience |

EsoEso:I still believe there will be one more draw this year but scores will definitely be closer to 500. Express entry is now much more competitive than it was a few years go. I met a lady who came got ITA with 431 in 2018. With the number of international students enrolling into colleges and universities in Canada I'd suggest that anyone interested in applying should do so as quickly as possible because once these students graduate and work for one year they'll enter the pool with higher scores due to canadian education and canadian work experience 2 Likes |

There was a shooting 5 mins from me in Vaughan last night. 5 people lost their lives. Surprised the media (BBC, CBC,CNN...) are not reporting the full story. The gunman was also killed by police in the process. At the end the Canada (especially GTA) housing crisis is now turning some people to become gunmen. The story in the neighborhood is that a man was frustrated by members of his Condo Board and out of anger he got a gun and shot 6 of the board members. In Canada today there is a limit on annual rental increases. This makes it impossible for landlords to increase rents for existing tenants by more than 2.5% in Ontario. Some landlords and Condo management coys find ways to frustrate tenants out of the building so they can rent to new tenants at an uncapped price. Looks like they did that to a 73 year old man who has been a tenant in the apartment for 11 years. Probably retired and faced with financial pressures as well as being too old to face the hurdles of finding a house he may have opted to pour his anger on the condo board members that took the decision against him. Zeewirld:You are right. I missed out this factor bt the good thing is that the trend is changing for good though at a slow pace. Some people are now more cautious of who they chose are there life partners. No longer the way it used to be when people were encouraged to get married to a woman simply because of tribe. Regarding black tax I don't give money to my relatives without reason. There has to be a plan towards self reliance and I find a way to support that plan. But when it comes to send me money I tell them I don't know how to do cross-border funds transfer. Building generational wealth is a slow but rewarding process. 2 Likes |

When I asked they said I’ll understand when I get married. Prior to moving to Nigeria I found married couples in England/Scotland to be financially stable doing things together as a couple. senoraaquila:Somehow I try to discourage relying on others for POF. Anyone moving to Canada without having a support system will need the funds or even more than the requested amount. If you are getting help with POF also ensure that you are able to raise your own funds before travelling because arriving without money is the beginning of some people's struggle. And I'll explain why. One reason people struggle with hardship in many developed countries is due to their inability to access credit. Ability to access credit makes it easier to buy a house, a car, pay for tuition, rent a house and raise money for many other things. The credit report/score is more valuable than account balance in many instances. People arriving without money likely to default on some of their financial obligations which gets recorded on their credit report. Once a credit score drops, it usually takes a long time to get it back up. Even when credits are extended to an individual the interest rates are lower for individuals with higher credit scores. 1 Like |

SuppoOmoo:Thanks for coming out to air your concerns and I will be frank with you. Your concerns are very valid. You need to ask yourself if it is something you want to do or you are being pressured to do it. There are many reasons why people relocate and these reasons vary from person to person. Relocation out of Nigeria has put smiles on the faces of many families and also brought sorrows to many families. Since I completed university I have moved three times. From UK to nigeria (at age 24), Nigeria to South Africa (at age 27) and South africa to Canada (at age 30). In all cases I was single and the reason I made my most recent move was to take advantage of the tech boom in Canada, land a software engineering job and live in a country where I wouldn't have to worry about work permits and overall earn a decent income. On your part you have a secured FG job, some level of comfort/job satisfaction and some level of stability. Will you be better off moving to Canada ? If the answer is YES kindly consider going for it. Will you be able to get the kind of job you want in Canada ? If the answer is YES kindly consider going for it. In addition, Canada is a very big country with 10 provinces. The province of Ontario is bigger than Nigeria in Land mass. Since I landed in Canada I have not travelled to the other Provinces. Even within the Province I reside I have not gone outside the Greater Toronto Area (except the few times I went to USA). Thus I cannot say I know Canada well. But I hear that Manitoba doesn't have an economy as advanced as you'll find in Ontario. Thus kindly research about the opportunities in the Province you'll be going to since the offer you have is under the Manitoba PNP program. Hopefully you'll make the right decision. 6 Likes |

Gerrard59:I've asked the same question but get different answers: 1. Difficulty for developers to secure building permits from the council within a short time-frame. 2. Shortage of workers in the construction sector. the sector is regulated hence new immigrants need to get through some form of licensing. 3. Despite the huge land resource, the local council has a zoning policy that designates a vast portion of the land as green area (for trees, forests and all) thus making it impossible for houses to be built there. 4. The local council also determines the kind of building that can be constructed in a particular zone. You cant build high rise buildings in some zones and cant build residential buildings in some zones also. 5.Property tax issues And many other issues are we dont face in Nigeria lol |

megastu:Unfortunately this is what I noticed also. Before I moved to Canada I asked a lot of questions from people i knew who had settled in Canada long before now. I also read a lot online . The POF quoted is also not enough to live comfortably in Greater TorontoArea. To rent a house is a struggle and I noticed that once accommodation is not sorted its difficult to get things done. I know a student who got an offer at Toronto Metropolitan university with a $60,000 tuition. I advised him to find a school outside toronto. Its expensive to be a student in Toronto. He didn't listen but came with the hope that he will work and study to raise his tuition and survival money. Right now he is a burden to people I know as they dont even answer his calls again. He is owing people money left right and center. The school has threatened to de-register him. With the new policy of unrestricted work hours for students he is doing three jobs (security job at night, dish washer in the restaurant in the evening and a cleaning job in the day time. He misses most of his classes. His experience in Canada has been tough but I hope he scales through these hurdles 1 Like |

aestake:The truth is sometimes bitter. I was having lunch with a friend in Toronto last week and he told me that emotions aside if they call an election he will vote the conservatives. Unfortunately from Nigeria nobody will understand as many want to move to Canada. I feel like the current Canadian government hasn't done much to address the housing crises. Ontario has a lot of land (bigger than Nigeria in land mass) but housing crises is crazy. I spent 4 months in an AirBnb at a rate of $2800 monthly. I got tired of using uber to go view condos. Many times I'd go view a condo I'll meet like 5 or 7 people viewing same apartment. I submitted multiple offers but got turned down. Landlords are smiling to the bank in GTA. My employer gave me a supporting letter still struggled through bidding war before one application was eventually accepted. I've been wondering why they don't construct more houses instead of fighting the source of the demand. More students and more immigrants will obviously need more housing. Doug Ford is frustrated. In addition the number of international students that trooped into canada in 2021 and 2022 are more than double pre-covid numbers. jesmond3945:To be honest working in the Canadian and South african tech space felt much more fulfilling than any of the tech jobs I took up in Nigeria (Tech company and bank). The typical Nigerian workspace is unprofessional, a fertile ground for nepotism and very unstructured. I found it unhealthy hence my decision to leave. But before I left I planned my exit in such a way that it will be beneficial. The key here is PLANNING. I'm not against people leaving Nigeria but I like to emphasize the importance of planning. We can't get everything planned as not everything is within our control but one has to try. Age was also on my side as I was 27 and single when I moved to take up a tech Job at Johannesburg. One of the things I noticed in South Africa was the non-guaranteed path to permanent residency and as I was approaching 30 I needed something more stable than a work permit. This was what propelled me to apply for permanent residency in Canada as I turned 29. I loved life in Johannesburg and its closer proximity to Nigeria as opposed to Canada but after weighing the pros & cons I opted to move to Canada. On the other hand I have stopped blaming Nigerian government for the situation of things in Nigeria. Many Nigerians are bad people. At the workplace you'll find co-workers going out of their way to plot the downfall of one another. There was complete disregard for contents of employment contract. When I worked at the bank I constantly saw bosses threatening employees as late at 8pm to make sure they don't go home. My contract stated that I was entitled to 20 days of annual leave but in reality my boss will arrogantly yell at any young single guy who applies to go on leave. Outside the workplace one could not avoid hostile policemen or estate security, infrastructure was poor and a lot of people were dishonest. I can go on and on to describe how bad Nigeria is but leaving Nigeria without a solid plan may also be counterproductive. I found South Africa a much better country to live and work in than Nigeria 8 Likes |

Ugosample:Life in Nigeria and USA/Canada/EU is very different on many fronts. In Nigeria being a homosexual is a big deal and will be for a long time. Thus you will hardly find any Nigerian-born parent tell you their child being gay or lesbian is no big deal. I am yet to see that even among Nigerians that i've met in USA as well as Canada. There are certain values/principles that increases a person's chance of success anywhere. Be it Nigeria or USA. It is because of lack of those values that make some people struggle at home and abroad. There are places I've been to in Toronto that makes me question if the people I went to visit made the right choice by leaving Nigeria. As a parent I will rather focus on instilling the right attitude to life on my kids than rely on location. When I lived in Nigeria I wasnt happy with a number of things but overall I was still in the middle class. As a 25 year old I got a job in my field, bought a car, jointly rented an apartment in lekki 1, furnished it moderately, got another organization try to poach me, spent my annual vacations in any country of choice and all that. Today I earn a much high salary in Toronto but I don't believe my location played a role. If I was in Nigeria I'd have still been in middle class there. In the one year I worked in Johannesburg I still lived well by both Nigerian and South African standard. I have family cousins today complaining about Nigeria and wanting to japa but complaining that they don't have the means. In my opinion even if they have the means with their attitude they may still struggle. If you don't mind I'll give you an example. As young boys then we had an uncle who was senior in NNPC. He opened his doors in Lagos to many members of the family (particularly the young students). He use to get angry when he returned from work to see the ladies watching African magic. Some of these ladies did not know how to use a computer but he made available a desktop computer and the SAM - Premiere Microsoft Office Training textbook. These ladies didn't take advantage of that. For the guys most were more interested in driving his cars and showing off to women. I was always glued to my macbook (was always practicing java programming then). It was assumed that I didnt know how to drive a car because I never drove a car in that house. After sometime uncle got internship opportunities for 90% of the people that stayed with him or visited him frequently. These opportunities were at companies that were into a joint venture with NNPC and as a senior staff he didnt have a problem getting his people internship opportunities in these places. For some reason I believed so much in a future as a software engineer and never asked him for these opportunities during my long vacations. Those who were youth corpers were also placed in organizations but they were so fixated with outdoing each other in my uncle's house, fighting each other for his attention and driving cars in his house (uncle's family lived in USA hence the house was like a free for all). A few years after his wife and younger children moved back to nigeria and his house was no longer as open to members of the family. All these people were back in our state struggling with unemployment and lack of money to do anything. He got one or two of them (the ones that studied engineering) a third party contract job with one of the NNPC vendors (a one man company) in 2013. 9 years later they are still there on the same salary. As far as I am concerned these people did not and do not have the values/character of someone who wants to be successful. Take them to America with this same character they will still struggle. I never had any of the opportunities they had but one thing I learnt from my parents was the eventual reward that came with not giving up on myself and persevering. Even when things look fine I keep trying and trying to move to the next thing every now and then. There are opportunities and challenges everywhere. Leeching on people or on social systems is one of the ways to keep thyself at the bottom of the pyramid. America rewards the rich and upper class more than the poor. Same with Nigeria 5 Likes 1 Share |

Ugosample:I still don't believe this narrative. All over the world you find people who do well and people who struggle or do badly. The community/support system is virtually absent abroad. I know a Nigerian doctor that moved to UK before I was born (he moved there in 1981) and never visited Nigeria till 2005. He was a consultant when he visited with a wife and one child. When I went to study at the university of edinburgh his daughter was a student there studying mathematics. She helped me get my first apartment near edinburgh using her credit profile/citizenship while I paid her back. Two months after I moved there her parents will constantly call me to go check up on her as she wasn't picking up their calls. I went a few times but got no response as she refused to open the door. She ended up dropping out of university while I completed my studies, moved back to Nigeria for the NYSc program, worked briefly in Nigeria (tech), south africa and now working in tech in Canada. The fact that I was born in Nigeria and lived there till I was almost 19 did not stop me from studying computer science and becoming a software engineer in Nigeria, South Africa and now Canada. Second example is a pharmacist who moved to UK, met a naija man and got married. She eventually wasnt able to practice pharmacy there probably due to licensing or whatever. Her three kids were born in the UK. One is doing well. The only boy dropped out of uni and works in Tesco as cashier. Third is an uncle who moved to USA via intra-company transfer from an IOC (chevron) to their HQ. At the time he was leaving for three years people asked him why he was taking his family if he would only be there for three years and it was same story of kids having a good headstart in USA. He returned after a few years without his wife and kids in 2006. Now out of the three kids they have, the first one dropped out of university, second and third are both homosexuals. They are trying to convince the second child to give men a chance . Third child is gay and they arrogate so much hate towards him. I also have an uncle who moved to USA in the 80s to work in one of the big banks there. His children are doing all amazingly well .One is a doctor and the other two are high flyers in their career with MBAs from ivy-league universities. The reason I outlined these examples is to pass across my opinion. Moving abroad under harsh circumstances doesn't guarantee the success of your kids. I can say it with certainty that Nigerians that moved to canada via express entry as adults within the last few years seem to even be doing much better than a lot of black canadians who were born in Canada. People should learn the art of bringing up A-list kids and they'll likely be proud of their children be it home or abroad. Moving abroad has aided some people to prosper and it has also destroyed some people. Then back to the trend now. People are moving to UK on study permits with many studying cooked courses that isn't likely to give them an edge in the UK labor market. They do it at a huge cost living in very tough conditions with no guarantees that they will become permanent residents. For a family man and woman making such move should involve a good and solid plan because some mistakes can be very costly to a 35 or 40 year old 7 Likes 1 Share |

No1girl:This one is your own. My own is I got PR for canada via express entry and applied for software engineering jobs remotely from Lagos. Landed two and accepted one before I landed. I stayed at a friends house for my first few days sleeping on his sofa till my first salary entered. After I received my first salary (less than two weeks after I landed) I sent 100k to my dad and 100k to my mum. They called to ask me why I'm sending them money when I only just arrived and havent settled down. I moved to an Air bnb that weekend and spent 4 months there. I also got a credit card a day after I arrived with a limit of $4000. I used up the first four months building my credit score and saving. After four months I rented a condo in Toronto for $2000 monthly. My mum retired in February as a civil servant while my dad is much more buoyant than she is. Her pension is barely a little over 100k but I change $450 and send to her monthly. In addition to doing this I'm able to live comfortably and still save 25% of my income monthly. Later this month I'll be going to Nigeria to visit them as I havent seen my parents since I moved here 6 months ago. Anyone that wants to leave nigeria should do their homework and move. Nigerians are doing well in both home and abroad. Make yourself among the ones that do well either at home or abroad. Don't be discouraged by all this negative talk. By the way I'm 31 years old. Some days ago the bank increased my credit limit. I never use more than 10 per cent of my limit hence they probably want to get me to spend more. With good planning, entering the country legitimately (avoid aduro route), proper skills and some luck you'll be alright. 12 Likes 2 Shares |

Some will spend so much and end up working multiple jobs just to be able to survive in a UK that is undergoing hyperinflation and many economic issues. Some are even too old for this. By the time they become permanent residents and qualify for mortgage they'll be in their 40s with no enough years to work to pay-up the mortgage and have a decent pension fund. 3 Likes 3 Shares |
