Treadway:My little cents is people should plan. I see a lot of people just jumping on the japa train with little or no plans. No accommodation, no money, no plan what they plan to do in the short, mid and near future. Some borrowed proof of funds while some have liquidated all they have worked for. Age is also not on some people's side. A guy I know started his career at a bank in 2005. He turned 41 this 2022 and decided to japa with his wife + kids some weeks ago. They sold their mechanic garage, land + house in lagos and car. He enrolled in a masters program and if things go fine he will complete the masters program at the age of 42. Assuming he starts working at 42 on a graduate visa for two years till he is 44. Then switch to a work visa at the age of 44. I don't know if the UK immigration act takes into consideration the years spent on tier 4 and graduate visa when calculating eligibility days for indefinite leave to remain in UK. I know it takes 5 years of being on a work visa hence give + take it will take 5 - 7 years to secure permanent residence in the UK. When you become a permanent resident at the age of 47 how many years of working do you have to take a mortgage and pay it up ?Credit facilities to nationals and permanent residents are more generous than what is available to temporary residents. People should endeavor to consider the pros and cons of their japa movement. It favors younger people more and that is why a country like canada targets young , highly skilled and masters/phd holders under the age of 30. It is believed that people in this category end up doing better because they come in as permanent residents and join the canadian workforce early enough . 1 Like |

Munamoqel: I still do not understand why people liquidate their assets , businesses or even resign from a job after getting a UK tier 4 visa. That visa is a temporary visa. Its a study visa . If you are unable to secure an indefinite leave to remain (ILR) will you return to nigeria and start from the scratch ? The US green card (which is hard to get if applying outside the family class) and the canadian PR grants the holder a right to permanent residence in the country but not the tier 4 visa. I pray and hope people understand the difference. The UK graduate visa (issued after studies) is valid for two years and non-renewable hence finding a sponsor within the 2-year period is necessary. If unable to find a sponsor the holder may have to return to their home country and if you have nothing in your home country then it becomes harder. Doing this in your 20s is fine as they say nothing spoil. But the trend I'm seeing now is established family men and women with kids taking this route. It is risky doing this in your late 30s or 40s 3 Likes |

cooooooks: I am also guilty of this lol. In 2018 my friend was talking about express entry but I was telling him I cant go to the west and live again as I had done it before. Tech was booming and I was enjoying software development in FinTechs and banks. In July 2019 I moved to another apartment and my friend visited again coming from the IELTS exam center. I told him I can't write IELTS again at my age. I don't know what happened but during the lockdown I just wanted to get out of Lagos. I did not know why I saw express entry right at my finger tips and threw it away. Luckily I got ITA in November 2020, submitted application in January 2021, got application approved in January 2022 (thanks to RROC) , got a job in April 2022 and left Nigeria in May 2022. Right now I still question why I didn't do this in 2018 because I had everything then (except IELTS) but glad I was able to get it with a CRS of 481 right before my 30th birthday. Many will resist and may later regret. My aunt who wanted her kids to study in the west tells me how she's regretting because people advised her to give birth to her kids in USA but she refused because she wanted to have her mother/maids with her. They told her to do it for her kids but she refused now she is struggling to pay their fees due to exchange rate issues. These things happen. 10 Likes |

Offpointng:They will attack you oohhh lol . On a lighter note your advice is on point. I moved to Toronto in May 2022 after getting PR and securing a job while still in Nigeria. I have a fiancee as well but I came alone. From May 2022 till today I have not been able to rent a house due to fierce competition in the rental market. Fiancee came to visit me for a month recently at the Air BnB I'm temporarily renting. In my case salary is entering every two weeks, savings is there but still cant rent a flat because landlords are more comfortable with tenants who have a longer credit history/score and history of renting in canada. Can't imagine what it would have been like coming here without a job and with a woman. A friend of mine moved with his pregnant wife without a job and they quarrel quite often because the woman still makes all kinds of demands 2 Likes 1 Share |

wink2015:Wike is fighting for himself. Nobody is fighting for you or any southern Nigeria. Atiku is also fighting for himself . I dont believe all this zoning crap. Many have wasted their time and resources over this zoning and ethnic interest thing. My uncle was once appointed GED in NNPC and the whole village was fighting tooth and nail defending him when he had an issue with EFCC. Family members were falling over themselves lying against one another to gain favour from him. I graduated from university the week he was appointed. I did not fall for that crap. I followed through my grad school application and enrolled into grad school. People thought I was dumb for not hanging around him and opting to enroll in grad school when I could get a job in NNPC with a bachelors degree. By the time I was done with grad school he had been booted out of office with family members accusing him of helping no one other than enriching himself I laughed at them. No single person gained employment into NNPC as a permanent staff through him. Another cousin of mine was a sitting DG of a parastatal when I was starting the NYSC program but I applied for jobs like an orphan till I succeeded. Slowly everyone can achieve their dream if they believe in themselves. Never will I waste my time to fight for anyone for the mere sake of tribe. If Wike won the PDP primaries and eventually won the elections , himself, his wife and children would have been the major beneficiaries while his people would continue to remain where they are thinking they have helped him fight off Ayu and Atiku. Every man fight for yourself . All claim to be fighting for the people of southern nigeria is a scam |

As candidates in the pool await today's draws I'll like to encourage everyone that has been waiting for days, weeks, months and years to become a permanent resident of Canada. I was also anxiously waiting for my application to be processed all through the period Canada's border was closed in 2021. One evening on February 9, 2022 I walked up to unplug my phone from its charging spot and got an update email from IRCC. I logged into my GcKey account to look up the update and I saw that it was a request for a re-medical examination. I booked an appointment with IOM ikeja and had my medicals done the following week. Encountered some delays getting IOM to upload my results over a week after I underwent the medicals but less than two hours after I received the "result upload" SMS I got another update email from IRCC. I initially thought it was a "medical passed" notification but to my surprise it came along with a passport request email. I was very excited but somehow became hesitant with the idea of sending my passport to Accra or Cairo. Got more information about the process days after and accepted that it was a norm to send/post travel documents to Accra, Cairo and even London in some cases. I submitted my passport at the DHL lekki 1 and paid the necessary fees. It took one month to get my passport back and I received my processed passport on March 24, 2022. The COPR issued had a validity till February 2023 thus I began to work towards saving more money and moving to Canada in October 2022. Kept my passport + COPR in the box and continued living my life like normal. However, something happened at my place of work one day. I overheard my boss speaking to someone on the phone without knowing that I was present. He was so angry and said so many negative things about me to my surprise using very bitter words. I could not match his kind words to me with what I heard. He came up with the work from home policy to reduce staff attrition among the software engineers and was later speaking so bitterly about me for working from home two days a week. I was disappointed and spent that evening looking up CV formats for Canadian software engineers. It wasn't too different from what I had and I applied for 10 software engineering jobs in Ontario via linkedin. I also bought a virtual number which I used on my CV as well as my friend's address who is based in Canada. I made sure I applied for 10 jobs every single day till I was no longer able to cope with the interview requests. I was receiving phone calls from recruiters frequently telling me about one role or the other. One particular hiring manager constantly assured me that he very much wanted me on his team in Ottawa. By week 5 (second week of april). I received my first job offer. I was offered more than I asked for. I negotiated with the firm to allow me resume after one month as they wanted me to resume in two weeks. My friend advised me against negotiating a late resumption but what he didnt know was that I was dealing with the reality of having to make another move leaving behind elderly parents. My mum turned 60 in February and retired. By week 7 I got a second offer which I turned down. The organization told me they had another orientation session for the week starting may 23rd 2022 but for their US office hence if I miss the orientation session for the Toronto office I'll have to attend the orientation session at their Detroit office. Luckily I had a B1/B2 US visa and I accepted to have my orientation at the Detroit office. By May 10th it occurred to me that I had only 14 days to resume at a new job and leave my family/friends. I bought a ticket on travelstart (abuja - paris - detroit - toronto - paris - abuja). The ticket was cheaper flying from Abuja as opposed to flying from Lagos. The night before I left I was in the office till 10pm handing over my projects to a junior colleague. I woke up at 3am on that faithful day, removed the battery of my car and covered the car before packing my belongings in two suitcases. I headed for Abuja in the morning and flew out to Detroit later that day. The ride to the airport from my apartment was a sad and lonely one. I did not wake my sister up to say goodbye because I was sad to be moving away from a life I was so used to. Arrived Detroit the following day and began to meet some of my new colleagues virtually and physically. At the end of the program I flew to toronto on Endeavour air. Flight time was 35 minutes. My old neighbor picked me up from the airport and took me to his house where I stayed for about three weeks. My very close friend who normally stays with me each time he visited lagos disappointed me by asking me to pay him $1000 monthly to stay in his house when I was only looking for a place to stay for three weeks. Glad an old neighbor came to my aid. I struggled with the food for the first few days but I must say that looking back now I believe I made the best decision moving to Canada at this phase of my life. I believe and pray that I will make good use of my time here and learn as much as I can. I earned my first salary 8 days after landing here and luckily my employer asked for the flight receipts for my orientation trip to Detroit. I submitted my entire itinerary because I bought all legs of flight in one booking from travelstart. They told me they were expecting a Toronto to Detroit to Toronto ticket but I told them I was in Nigeria when the job offer came and the "people and culture" personnel said it was fine. I was refunded the full cost of my ticket as they had no way of separating the flight legs and determining how much each leg would have cost. Proof of funds became irrelevant as I earned my salary in day 8 and have been earning every two weeks since then. My biggest worry was getting a job and having enough money to fund my early months which I'm glad I have been able to cope with. On the downside I have not been able to rent an apartment since arriving here in May 2022. Relying on long term air bnb bookings due to lack of credit history, low credit score (696) and the race factor. I am still building my credit score and positive that one of my rental applications will be accepted before the end of September. In addition IRCC is still yet to ship my PR card hence I am unable to travel out of Canada and return without the PR card. I have been calling IRCC just like candidates awaiting their PR and visa applications to be processed. In all I believe my wins are more than my losses and I continue to push for more wins . Great things can indeed happen when we step out of our comfort zones. In addition I hope and pray that everyone out here will have their applications processed with a reasonable timeframe. Thank you all and wish you a happy ITA and PPR 68 Likes 5 Shares |

If you did not join the bank in its early days and work directly with Jim Ovia you are likely to regret spending a long time there. thesicilian:I started my career at a software company where I was a youth corp member. My employment was retained after NYSC but I resigned 7 months after to join a much bigger organization for the brand, network, size of project and all. I worked at the big organization for 5 years and 9 months. The only reason I stayed this long was because I was growing. Moved from Software Eng 1 to 2 after 15 months. Then Software eng 2 to 3 after 24 months. I started getting uncomfortable as I didn't believe I was approaching six years in the organization hence I resigned and moved to a software company where I could earn dollars and work on a different type of projects. I have come to realize that people who stay on one job for a very long time are less resilient than the more mobile employees. They find it harder to get another job and transition to something better hence limiting themselves to what their employer offer to them. Employers prefer a candidate who spent 15 years in 3 different organizations as opposed to candidates who spend 15 years in a single role/organization 6 Likes |

Zeewirld:IRCC is very unpredictable and probably because most of their decisions are driven by data. FSW target is different from ITA target as not all ITA's end up making a successful application that leads to PR. Right now they have more than enough candidates in backlog to meet their target for 2022. Candidates in the pool will most likely meet up 2023 targets but as people get a year older, profiles & language test results are expiring . 1 Like |

elonize:That is it oohhh. If people tell you their stories in the hands of Nigerians in the west you'll not believe. I only laugh about this because by default I believe outside Nigeria I'll get access to good quality infrastructure and all but bad quality human relationship. My aunt has a friend living in London who was her roommate in university. She told me the friend doesn't treat her well when she stays at her house in London but london hotels are too expensive so she'll endure it. Fast forward in 2021 the friend's father passed away and friend travelled to nigeria for the funeral. She stayed at my aunty;s house where my aunt assigned a maid to her and a car+driver. Every morning maid will take tea to her and ask her what she wants to eat. Driver will take her to every part of the city in preparation for the funeral. People tackled my aunt for not revenging the bad treatment but my aunt said she wants to teach her how to host a friend in your house lol. My aunt showers twice a day (morning and night) but when in London she's so scared of her friend's constant complaint that she endures sleeping with her sticky body lol. On the other hand COPR means confirmation of permanent residence. It's a document the canadian government gives to an applicant after approving their application for permanent residence . The document has an expiry date mandating that the holder arrives in canada before the expiry date. 1 Like |

elonize:Lol I applied for canadian PR via express entry by reading the contents of the official canadian immigration website and that was sufficient for me. I still prefer that over asking Nigerians in Canada because I learnt long ago how people (my naija people) tend to change once they get to the west. For instance I have a friend who has been in canada for more than 10 years and stayed at my place a few times he visited naija. On one occasion he was visiting and I had just moved to a new apartment with little resources after spending on agency fee/rent/installations and all. There was a vacant room in my house but it had no furniture in it but I ordered a bedframe from konga and bought a foam from mouka. I also bought an AC and installed in the room so he'll be comfortable. He stayed with me as he usually does Fast-forward I told him I was trying to get a PR but didnt ask him for assistance . More like I informed him. When PR came through I mentioned also but told him I have almost one year before the COPR document will expire thus I will take my time and try to get a job so I wont need to spend out of my savings or sell anything. 6 weeks after my passport was delivered I secured a job and messaged him that I'll be coming and need a place to spend the first two weeks. His response was that he had a long day and suggested we should talk about this the next day. For me this feedback was enough to know that I needed to make an alternative plan. Again thank God for good savings and air bnb . We eventually spoke the next day but he said his house was full but if I could hang and delay trip for two months his friend will move out and I can come. He also said his friend paid him $1000 monthly to stay with him and I can also pay same lol. See why I said information online is more sure as I know how my naija people are when they leave naija. They can be suspicious of almost everyone. Bottomline the person that housed me for the initial two weeks was my neighbour many years ago who I hadn't seen or spoken to for more than 10 years. The guy even came to pick me from the airport on a workday. I looked for his number when I needed a favour from him and I felt bad because since 2009 I had never asked about him or even made effort to contact him. I relearnt about how unpredictable life can be lol. During my stay at his place I always insisted on paying for the groceries when we went to the market. I earned my first salary while in his house and took him out that day all bills on me lol. My brother the story is the same in england or USA. I guess the pressure of the western society and suspicion about people back home makes them behave this way. But for me I learnt about this in 2008 when I was going to study outside nigeria for the first time. My dad handed me some money and told me to manage my finances very well while reminding me that friendship and family system in the west is different from in Nigeria. He told me stories about his days as a PhD student in USA and how the support system was non-existent in the western world compared to nigeria. He told me nobody will give me $1 and I got used to it. So I'll summarize by saying you can do these things on your own. Dont make them feel too important. The government of these countries have made things easier with a lot of information online. Do not pay anybody any money 21 Likes 2 Shares |

krissconnect:The internet is your best link not humans. To be fair to them no human being has the power to take you to their host country as you'll still need to subject yourself to an immigration process. Nevertheless I'll tell you a short story. A friend reached out to me that he had been admitted into a university in toronto and needed a place to stay. His tuition was in the region of $50,000 and he was planning to apply for a student visa with the hope of being able to work and pay the fees. I did not want to discourage him but I knew his plan was not a good one but felt if I told him what I thought he'll think otherwise. I sent him links for one bed apartments in toronto (all starting from $1,800 monthly). He asked if he couldnt get anything cheaper but I told him he could rent a room in someone's apartment for cheaper. His budget was $500 monthly which I couldn't find. He later asked if he could stay in the outskirts and I suggested that he checks the cost of transportation from the outskirts to the city. Rents in the entire greater toronto area are high. In addition I susggested that he should try and pay his tuition so he can work for his rent/upkeep as no 20 hour a week job will be sufficient to finance a $50k fee. He cut contact with me and told his senior brother I was trying to discourage him from coming. My reality was that I moved to toronto on a PR not study permit. I had a job offer and someone accommodated me for two weeks. During the two weeks I slept on a couch which was not comfortable but then I was determined not to spend out of the USD10,000 I travelled here with. I opened a bank account and got a credit card with a $4,000 limit. In the third week I paid $1,454 for an AirBnB . I also received my first bi-weekly salary in the third week and have been earning a good income every two Fridays. I later rented my place outside the city jointly with a friend for the time being till I was able to get a credit score which is required to rent an apartment independently. I reached out to an old friend who had moved to canada 10 years ago with less than a thousand dollars and he told me his canadian girlfriend took a line of credit on his behalf and gave him to pay his fees while he repaid her back when he graduated and started working. But he mentioned that toronto is a much more expensve city than where he studied at. So again I'll suggest you try to get as much information as possible from the web . The realities may be discouraging but I still feel canada offers a more conducive environment for a young person than nigeria 18 Likes 2 Shares |

Salientsinmi:Software engineering role. Most interviews and assessment are done remotely these days. Kindly try and try I believe you'll get one. I have heard of two people who got employed into finance roles at HSBC and TD before landing in canada. Luckily the COPRs are now valid for a longer period of time hence giving candidates more time to plan their movement On the other hand If you were earning in naira before your decision to move to canada you'll find that the exchange rate is very bad now (naira to usd or cad). Thus without an immediate source of income in canada you'll be spending your savings and the movement to canada will seem more like restarting life. I wanted a sort of continuity and not a restart hence I did not sell a single item or asset of mine rather I simply applied for PTA and travelled down to toronto. Started earning in less than a month. 6 Likes |

JapaProf:Please preach the gospel. I see that people get so overwhelmed with the visa and ignore the job part which is also very crucial in my opinion. With the current labour shortage and "work from home" culture, you can get a job before arriving in canada. I accepted a job offer and rejected two before landing in canada. I basically landed two weeks before resumption to get a SIN and managed myself for one month (two weeks before job start date and two weeks into job) before I started earning in canada. 4 Likes |
