THE kidnappers of the traditional ruler of Iyani Akoko, Ondo State, Oba Joel Daodu, want N15 million ransom. He was, weekend, kidnapped along Owo/Ikare Expressway. Vanguard learned that the Oba’s family is pleading that the ransom be reduced to between N500,000 and N1 million. Oba Daodu’s abduction is coming barely two years after the Regent of Akungba, Princes Oluwatoyin Omosowan, was kidnapped at the same spot. It will be recalled that the regent of Akungba Omosowon was held captive for two weeks before she was rescued by a combined team of Department of State Services, DSS, and the police in 2015. Meanwhile, Oba Daodu was said to be travelling alone when the incident occurred, as a reliable source disclosed that he was driving himself, while returning from a social function. The Akoko Road is known to be notorious for robbery and kidnapping. His abductors had reportedly contacted his family, yesterday, requesting for N15 million ransom before he could be freed. Speaking with newsmen, another monarch, the Owa of Ogbagi, Oba Victor Ojo Adetona, expressed concern over the abduction of traditional rulers on the expressway. Oba Adetona appealed that security be beefed up around traditional rulers, as monarchs’ kidnaps were becoming embarrassing in the state. Contacted, the state Police Command image-maker, Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident, noting that investigation was on. Joseph, who assured that the monarch would soon be rescued unhurt, said police are on the trail of the kidnappers and would soon smoke them out of their hideouts. He said to his knowledge no ransom had been demanded by the abductors from his family. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/04/ondo-monarchs-kidnappers-want-n15m-ransom/

As athletes’ build up continues ahead of the IAAF world championships billed for London in August, only two Nigerian runners, Tobiloba Amusan and Patience Okon have so far hit the qualification marks in their respective events. This is just as the Athletics Federation of Nigeria is hoping to present the women relay teams at the World Relays starting April 22 in Bahamas, with a view to increasing the chances of the teams making the World Championships. Athletes have till July 2 to make the entry standards. Amusa’s 100m hurdles world leading time of 12.63 seconds achieved on March 25 2017, gives her the bragging rights to run in the championships, while Okon-George barley made it with her 52. 01 seconds she did in the 400m a few days back. The qualification mark for the women 400m is 52.10 seconds. “We are hopeful more athletes will meet the world championships standards. We are still in April and most athletes are yet to hit top form,” said coach Gabriel Okon. He disclosed that the women relays teams are expected to leave for Bahamas any time this week for the World Relays. “We are the defending champions in the women 4x200m. It is most expedient for us to be there so that we can improve on our ratings. This is because the top eight will gain automatic qualification for the World Championships.” Meanwhile, former Nigerian international athlete, Brown Ebewele said that the incoming board of the AFN must strive to reposition the sport in the country. He was speaking against the background of the release of the electoral guidelines by sports ministry on Wednesday. “The new board of the AFN should be comprised of people who are ready to make sacrifices. This is because we need to revive athletics in this country. “The next dispensation must be for the athletes and the coaches. If the athletes and coaches are not happy, then there is no AFN,” said the former Edo State commissioner for sport. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/04/2-nigerians-qualify-iaaf-world-championships/ |
Professor of Christian theology in University of Ilorin, Pius Oyeniran Abioje, has dismissed the agelong Biblical claim that Jesus Christ died to save the world. Speaking while delivering the 167th Inaugural Lecture of the university, entitled, ‘Christian Prophets and Other Prophets in Nigeria’, the professor said Jesus Christ was killed by haters of truth. Abioje, who noted that critical prophets should anticipate opposition and conspiracy from unexpected quarters, said: “The conspiracy that killed Jesus Christ came from the millieu of the chief priest and the political elite. “Regrettably, the interpretations by many Christians is that God wanted Jesus to die so as to save the world. Yet the world continues to persecute innocent critical prophets. “Why cannot Christians emphasise that Jesus was killed by haters of truth, the religio-political powers that be,particularly since the world is still seeking redemption? “Nigerians should learn to see critical prophets as friends of the society, and pardon them whenever they happen to err, since no human being is infallible.” The professor asked the people in positions of authority to learn to see critical prophets as partners in progress towards human edification, not as adversaries. The university don also admonished: “Divinatory/esoteric prophets should avoid fraudulence.” They should see their divinatory knowledge as divine endowment to be used altruistically and not for exploitation. “People who consult esoteric prophets should be discerning and not gullible. “ They should avoid frequent recourse to divinatory prophecy to avoid mediumistic psychosis” Abioje also urged Nigerians to strive to become critical prophets to speak against evil on behalf of God and try to live holy lives. He however advised: “Academic programmes generally should include introduction to critical prophecy, which makes a person to be committed to advocacy in godly words and actions, even as medical doctors, engineers, architects, lawyers and so on and not only as clergy men and women, Virtues for which critical prophets strive is unarguably the key to individual and social progress, even when truth can be very bitter.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/04/easter-shocker-jesus-not-die-save-world-prof-abioje/

COTE D’Ivoire, Senegal and Sao Tome have beaten Nigeria to the fourth position in the World Bank new global trade Logistics Performance Index (LPI) for the year 2016. The World Bank ranking revealed that Cote d’Ivoire led the West African region with an average point of 2.6, closely followed by Senegal and Sao Tome with 2.59 average point respectively in logistics competence in West Africa. LPI is the weighted average of the country scores on the six key dimensions which include, efficiency of the clearance process, quality of trade and transport related infrastructure, ease of arranging competitively priced shipments, competence and quality of logistics services, ability to track and trace consignments, and timeliness of shipments in reaching destination within the scheduled or expected delivery time. Efficiency of the clearance process The scorecard allows comparisons with the world (with the option to display world’s best performer) and with the region or income group on the six indicators and the overall LPI index. On the number of export and import agencies, while Nigeria has eight and seven respectively, Senegal has three each for export and import as against two agencies each for Cote d’Ivoire. For declaration submitted and processed electronically, Cote d’Ivoire recorded a 100 percent, just like the Senegalese counterpart, but Nigeria recorded a mere 63.64 percent. For the time spent on physical examination of cargoes, it takes two days to carry out the cargo examination process in Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal, while it takes four days in Nigeria. For cargo examination without physical process, it takes three days in Nigeria, two days in Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal respectively. Reacting to the development, Mr. Alban Igwe, Deputy National President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) said that Nigeria has refused to see the potentials in the logistics industry and, therefore, lacks the vision and strategy to grow the industry. He said that Logistics industry contributes 12 percent to global businesses adding that the benefit of a well structured logistics industry will continue to elude Nigeria if it does not take action to redress the current situation. Similarly, Dr. Zeb Ikokide, a seasoned logistics expert and vice chairman of the Port Facility Security Officers (PFSO) told Vanguard that logistics industry lacks funding and urged the government to take a critical look at the logistic industry with a view to harnessing its potentials. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/04/cote-divoire-senegal-others-beat-nigeria-global-trade-logistics-index/ |
Ahead of the Easter celebration, the Catholic Diocese of Yola on Friday paid fines of 25 inmates from the Prison. Speaking at the ceremony yesterday, Bishop Stephen Mamza, said the church paid the fine amount and got them released and also presented foodstuff to the remaining inmates. Mamza pleaded with Christians to demonstrate love through sharing with the needy and underprivileged such as prisoners and internally displaced persons during such festive periods. The officer in charge of the prison, Mr. Idi Abubakar, lauded the church for the kind gesture and also asked those released to reciprocate the gesture by being responsible members of the society. It was also reported that that the church delegation also visited IDPs settlements where they distributed food items to the IDPs. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/04/church-pays-fines-25-inmates-yola-prison/ |
