Politics › Goodluck 2015: The Light Goes Dim by uanda(op): 8:49am On Jan 16, 2015
President Goodluck Jonathan surfed to power six years ago on the back of widespread national approbation. His approval rating spiked through the roof in a historically-unprecedented fashion. He was Goodluck the beloved, Goodluck the saviour, it was all about Goodluck! Nigerians from all tribes were determined to make his battle their battle; wherever he led them, they had braced themselves to follow; and his God they were prepared to make their God. The good and virtues Nigerians saw in Jonathan were probably much more than the virtue Jesus saw in Judas Iscariot when he appointed him a disciple overseeing his treasury.

Today, the President’s political fireplace has gone frigid, the fire-in-the-belly of his government has waned as Boko Haram and widespread economic uncertainties have come hitting Nigerians like an unannounced swirling killer-blizzard. And the President’s men, like a losing kick-boxer are flailing at anything and anyone real or imagined with the sharp instruments of presidential incumbency in an attempt to win the fight.

My President is in the fiercest battle of his political life against Muhammadu Buhari, an astute, stout and sharp-witted retired Army General who is backed by an undying, increasing, and resolute following across Nigeria. Previous fights the President had won were fought by godfathers and the few powerful who believed in him. Many of the exalted positions Jonathan has so far occupied were brought to him by Goodluck. And where are those ardent and true supporters now? One by one, they have fled and found new friends in the arch-rivals of Mr. President as his ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party, continues to run out of clue. Strip by strip, the carpet of support is pulled from under his feet, and the haemorrhaging appears to have just begun.

Nine governors did not show up in his reelection declaration in Lagos; a buddy-priest of his, Enugu-based Father Ejike Mbaka, went on an endless tirade that our own Goodluck has actually brought Nigeria and especially the Igbo bad luck. On Monday, behind closed-doors in Abeokuta, the President smooched up in a room with two reputable Nigerian clerics and his estranged benefactor, Olusegun Obasanjo, begging the latter for support. But “Baba” told his late-coming penitent son that someone else already sought and received his support. I learnt that this was the most depressing moment of Jonathan’s Presidency.

From state to state, Mr. President is losing steam, ground, and men in thousands to the opposition party APC on a daily basis. I cannot recall in Nigeria’s history where a ruling party and an incumbent President have lost so much support in a rumbling sequence of 30 days before an election. Jonathan’s electoral chances in this election are getting dimmer by the day.

His story can be likened to that of the 29th president of the United States, Warren G. Harding, whose administration was a train-load of unending scandals that ranged from cover-ups of shady business deals and large scale corrupt activities by members of his cabinet. Like Harding, no one has accused Jonathan of corruption; and like Harding, Jonathan’s Achilles heels are those around him who are believed to be the cruella-de-vil of greed, graft and gluttony. Money in the hands of Jonathan’s lieutenants at all levels of government, many believe, is like ice cream in the mouth of a child; it melts fast and easy through the conduits of corruption and thievery, and you will not remember it ever was.

Because of the complex and intricate nature of Nigeria as a country, Nigerians could have probably been more forgiving if non-performance in government were the only shortcoming of this administration. But dismal performance conjoined with supersize corruption is not a transgression that Nigerians easily forgive. Profligacy has been rumoured to be at a scary scale with Nigerian politicians; and in the world of the ruling party, the PDP, it appears as if it is a necessary and desired undergarment.

There is too much conscious or unconscious coddling of graft by this President. If former Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, believes that his administration should be considered an angelic being regarding corruption compared to Jonathan’s, then this administration must be the unrepentant Lucifer of larceny and a dashing baron of daylight robbery that ever existed in the annals of Nigerian history. We all remember Babangida and his men. When the President said that corrupt government officials will not see the four walls of a prison under his authority, it was an announcement that depraved minds will always have a free pass with him. Incarceration of those adjudged corrupt, Mr. President, is a very powerful deterrent for those who steal public funds.

A heavy portion of this year’s budget was set aside for entertainment in the Villa, “estacode” for gazillion of aides travelling with the President all around the world, and the acquisition of more airplanes. The government is proposing to spend N517.9m this year on meals and refreshments for the Presidency, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, ministries of power and petroleum resources as well as their parastatals. For the office of the President, N142.47m was earmarked for 2015 for refreshments and meals, and N25.58m was earmarked for meals and refreshments for the office of the VP. In a country where over 100 million people are considered poor, this is nothing but a legacy of waste.

The US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Enwistle, has now told us that his country had intended to train a battalion of the Nigerian Army up to world standard; and the agreement was that the US would provide the trainers and the Nigerian government, the equipment. After a few weeks of training, the US had to back out because no equipment was provided by Nigeria. What happened to the N1tn the Minister of Finance, Mrs Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, publicly announced was in the 2014 budget for the military? What happened to the first-class equipment that should have been procured? The minister had said; “Defence spending is top in everything, you know that military establishment needs new things to assist in its work and ours will not be different…To be specific, the military has about N968.12bn and we have disbursed N130.7bn between January and April 2014.”

With this huge sum, why is Boko Haram controlling more than 20,000 square miles of the Nigerian sovereign territory, an area larger than Switzerland, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Israel and 144 other countries of the world? Why must our soldiers be ill-equipped, badly-managed, and morale badly bruised? About 17,000 innocent people have been killed so far more than those who died in the first US Gulf War. Presidents of nations make surprise visits to men and women who are laying down their lives for their countries in battles, but why is Jonathan not in that league? The music is fading for Mr. President, the light is dimming for the ruling PDP, and a shellacking train is about tearing through Abuja into Aso Rock taking the President and his men on a first-class cabin back to abodes of their choices. Nigerians can’t wait!

Having expressed this opinion, Dear Readers, I want you to mark this: It will be at your peril and pitfall to count out an incumbent African President called Goodluck. The battle will get dirtier as we draw close to February 14. But what shines in the horizon is that candidate Goodluck Ebele Jonathan who took the centre stage of global attention four years ago is not the same candidate today. No doubt, the light has dimmed drastically upon him, but he remains the President and Commander-In-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria throughout the election period. You never know, President Jonathan may still have some oil of Goodluck left in his presidential jar.

Politics › Buhari In Owerri, Promises To Stop Boko Haram Insurgency by uanda(op): 10:49am On Jan 13, 2015
Crhis-UbaThe presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), has said the party will ensure that Boko Haram insurgency is a thing of the past if voted into power next month.

Buhari urged the electorate to ensure that they resist all forms of rigging by insisting that their votes in the February polls count.

Buhari made the appeal to a crowd on Monday in a five-minute speech he made during his campaign at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, Imo State, stressing that such would enable his presidential ambition be realised via the votes of Nigerians.

He also warned that the lives of Nigerians could only be guaranteed if they guard their votes and usher in the APC government.

The presidential candidate also promised to end insecurity problem by stopping the Boko Haram insurgency, provide potable water in all homes and ensure goods are exported to other countries if elected the president of the country in the February 14 poll.

Accompanied by his running mate, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo; the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, the Director-General of Buhari Campaign Organisation and the Rivers State Governor, Hon. Chibuike Amaechi; the the Imo State Governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha; the former governors such as Segun Oni, Niyi Odebabjo, Timiprie Sylva and Senator Bukola Saraki; a former Minister of Information, Tony Momoh; Senator Chris Ngige, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, the Organising Secretary of the party, Senator Osita Izunaso, among others, the former head of state promised to give unemployed Nigerians jobs, while financial institutions would be empowered through enabling instruments to give loans to desiring entrepreneurs who would create ripple effects to turn around the economy to boom.

He lamented the suffering many Nigerians are currently undergoing in the present dispensation.

“We are going to empower financial houses that will give soft loans. We will build roads. Make sure you get your Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs), vote en masse. Make sure your votes count. If you don’t, you risk your life. Organise yourselves, make sure you make Nigeria the best country to live in,” he said.

His running mate, Osinbanjo, expressed worry that people were not rejoicing under the present regime of President Jonathan, promising better days for Nigerians if they usher in the APC government.

Also speaking at the event, Amaechi who started his speech with some songs and spoke a little in Igbo language regretted that the 16 years of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), government had not impacted positively on the lives of Nigerians and Igbos in particular.

He questioned why President Jonathan who had not completed the roads his government was constructing and the Second Niger Bridge, would ask the Igbos to cast their votes for him.

He said: “He abandoned the Owerri-Port Harcourt Road, 42 kilometres Aba-Owerri Road and he wants your votes. The Second Niger bridge is a 419.”

Onu, in his speech, regretted that the 16 years of the PDP had turned from “bad to worse,” urging the Igbos to embrace change.

Oyegun, who introduced some personalities, disclosed that 16 years of the PDP had led to poor infrastructure in educational system, non-functional electricity, insecurity among others.

He also accused the present regime and others of spending $50 billion on these infrastructure without results. Presenting flag to Okorocha, the APC national chairman urged him to ensure that the South east electorate cast their votes for the APC and not only in Imo State.

He used the forum to give blessings to all the APC candidates seeking various elective positions.

In his speech, Okorocha who announced the new Igbo name of Buhari (Okechukwu), promised to provide factories, industries, employment opportunities and more democracy dividends in 2015, de-emphasising free education, roads construction among others.

He noted that he was not interested in billboards, rather what would benefit the people, urging the people of the state to consider Buhari as one who dislikes corruption, wickedness and selfishness.

The governor reminded his audience that contrary to the insinuations from some quarters of Islamising them, Buhari has a Christian cook who has worked for him for 25 years; a Christian driver who has driven him for 30 years, while his last daughter got married to a Christian.

“It is a fabricated fallacy,” he noted.

Others who spoke at the occasion and endorsed the candidacy of the retired army general included Izunaso, Saraki, the Imo State Chairman of the party, Hilary Eke, the youths and women leaders of the party, among others.

Politics › Police Foil Attempt To Bomb APC, INEC Offices In Ebonyi by uanda(op): 10:40am On Jan 13, 2015
Police in Ebonyi State yesterday foiled an attempt to bomb the All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat and the state headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abakaliki, the state capital by suspected miscreants.

It was gathered that the timely intervention of the police bomb disposal squad that detonated the suspected devise saved the situation.

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Chris Anyanwu, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) while confirming the incident, said the miscreants placed a fabricated incendiary device that looked like Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at the two offices but they were safely detonated by the police bomb squad.

The PPRO said: “I want to inform you that the Ebonyi State Police Command have observed with dismay that mischief-makers with the intension of heating up the polity, have resorted to acts capable of causing panic among the public. Such mischievous individuals fabricate what we call incendiary devices in form of IED and go about hauling them into some targeted premises. Two of such incidents were recorded at the APC party secretariat at Kpirikiri and INEC headquarters in the state over the weekend.

“However, the timely intervention of the police bomb disposal squad in the command salvaged the situation as no explosive was recorded. The police command, therefore, warns such miscreants to desist from such antics or meet their waterloo, while all law abiding Ebonyians are enjoined to go about their legitimate duties without fear of harm or molestation as police in the state have taken further measures to stem the tide of this ugly development.”

It was gathered that the APC office along Kipirikpiri Road, which also served as the campaign office of the governorship candidate of the party, Senator Julius Ucha, was attacked by unknown persons with an object suspected to be explosive.
One of the aides to Senator Ucha, John Ekeh said the incident occurred on Sunday night when they heard a loud sound at the back of the building at about 10. 45pm.

Meanwhile, Senator Ucha has expressed concern over increasing plots by some political parties in the state to cause violence and loss of lives and property. He described the failed attempt to bomb his campaign office as one of the negative signs of what some political parties were planning to do in the state during and after the elections.

Politics › Hoodlums Bomb APC, Destroy APGA Offices In Ebonyi by uanda(op): 10:04am On Jan 13, 2015
As the nation approaches the general election next month, increasing wave of political violence has taken over Ebonyi state with the failed bombing of the All Progressives Congress (APC) office in Abakaliki and the destruction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) office

in Ohaukwu local government area of the state.

The failed bombing of APC office which occurred on Sunday, came on the heels of invasion and destruction of APGA office as well as house of some supporters of the party in Ohaukwu local government area of the state by unknown gunmen said to be wearing police uniform.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ebonti state, ASP Chris Anyanwu, who confirmed the failed bombing of APC office, noted that Police in Ebonyi state are currently working to unravel the people behind the dastardly act.

It was gathered that the APC office along the Kipirikpiri road, few metres away from the Government House and the Headquartres of the police command, which also serves as the campaign office of the
Governorship candidate of the party, Senator Julius Ucha, was attacked by unknown persons with objects suspected to be Improvised Explosive Device, (IED).

Though the alleged plots by those suspected to be agents of some political parties in the state was foiled, one of the aides to Senator Ucha, John Ekeh disclosed that the incident occurred in the night of
Sunday when they heard a loud sound at the back of the building.

John Eke said they heard a loud sound at the back of the building at 10. 45pm on Sunday night when the suspected terrorists threw in the (IED) through the fence with intention to bomb the office and
unfortunately the explosive could not catch up with the petrol that accompanied it.

“it was a clear intention of those that did it to burn down the office but God was on our side because when they threw the objects from the fence, the wire at the fence may have held the can containing the fuel and the intention was when the object exploded, the fuel will catch fire and the entire building would have been razed down he said”.

Meanwhile, Senator Julius Ucha has expressed concern over increasing plots by some political parties in the state to cause violence and loss of lives and property and described the failed attempt to bomb
his campaign office as one of the negative signs of what some political parties are planning to do in the state during and after the election.

Senator Ucha called on the Inspector General of Police to order thorough investigation into the incident, while calling on the APC supporters in the state to go about their lawful businesses as he is
capable of controlling the increasing violent attempts on him and the party faithful in the state in the face of all provocations.

However, some senior police officers including the Area Commander and the Divisional Police Officer, in charge of Kpirikpiri police station were at the scene to access the damage and a bomb disposal unit of the Nigeria Police was invited to evacuate the objects.

This is even as the APGA governorship candidate in the Sen Anthony Agbo condemned destruction of the party’s office and touching of houses of some members of the party in Ohaukwu LGA.

“These agents of destabilization in company of over 20 policemen, attacked the houses of some members in his area”.

“They burnt the party’s office and destroyed several properties such as furniture and posters, as the policemen who wore police vests and wielded AK 47 rifles, shot at the houses of our members,” he said.

He warned those involved in the sinister plots against him and the party, to desist from such acts as he knows their identity.

“It is clear that the forces of good and evil are presently competing for the soul of Ebonyi but I assure the citizens that no amount of evil conspiracy, intimidation, soul-trading and plan to rig elections
will change the divine purpose and plan for the state.

He called on the INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega to tighten all loose ends to ensure the conduct of a credible election, as the top echelon of this particular political party boasts that it would
influence INEC, police and the military.

According to him, the state party chairman was presently in Abuja over the attack on the party, as they would officially report the matter to the police when he comes back.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Chris Anyanwu, noted that APGA has not officially reported the matter, as it would be handled when reported.

Politics › Anambra PDP Candidates List: Jega Risks Jail Term by uanda(op): 3:37pm On Jan 12, 2015
The chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Attahiru Jega stands the risk of being sent to jail over his refusal to accept the list of candidates for the National and State Assemblies from the Ejike Oguebego-led Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State.

The Oguebego faction had initiated contempt proceedings against Jega for allegedly flouting a judgement of a Federal High Court in Abuja in relation to the outcome of the National Assembly primaries held in the state.

In a motion for committal filed by the party on December 31, 2014, Jega was accused of disobeying a December 5, 2014 judgement restraining INEC from accepting “any delegate list or nominated candidates” from the congresses or primaries conducted by the caretaker committee purportedly set up by the party’s national leadership to manage the affairs of the Anambra PDP.

Justice Evoh Chukwu of the Federal High Court, in Abuja, had in a judgement delivered on December 5, 2014 in suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/854/2014 filed by the chairman and legal secretary of Anambra PDP, Ejike Oguebego and Chuks Okoye (for themselves and the state’s Executive Committee of the party), affirmed Oguebego’s leadership of the party.

Justice Chukwu declared the caretaker committee illegal on the grounds that it was wrongly constituted while the tenure of the Oguebego-led Exco was yet to expire.

He said, “It is hereby ordered that the purported caretaker committee or ad hoc committee set up by the 1st defendant (PDP) during the subsistence and pending of this suit is illegal, null and void.

“That it is further ordered that any delegate list or nominated candidates that emanate from the congresses and primaries conducted by the caretaker committee or ad hoc committee set up by the PDP during the pendency and subsistence of this suit is illegal, invalid, unconstitutional, abuse of court process, null and void and cannot be used for any purpose.”

The party, in its motion on notice filed by its lawyer, Taiwo Abe, seeks among others, “an order committing Prof Jega, chairman, INEC for contempt of court for disobeying and refusing to comply with the order of this court made on December 5, 2014 and served on him on December 8, 2014.”

It also seeks an order directing INEC, “particularly its chairman, Prof Attahiru Jega – contemnor to comply forthwith with the orders of the court made on December 5, 2014.”

The Anambra PDP led by Oguebego hinged its prayers on the fact that INEC and its chairman were yet to obey the December 5 order and that their refusal to obey the order had adversely affected the nominated candidates that emerged from the National Assembly primary it conducted.

Justice Chukwu further ruled “that the 1st defendant’s agent and privies are hereby restrained from forwarding, sending or submitting to the 2nd defendant (INEC) any delegates list or nominated candidates that may emerge from the congresses or primaries conducted by the caretaker committee or ad hoc committee set up by the party.

“That the PDP is restrained from forwarding, sending or submitting to INEC any delegates list or nominated candidates that may emerge from the congress or primaries conducted by the purported caretaker committee set up by the PDP for the Anambra State Chapter except those emanating from the Oguebego’s congresses and primaries election.

We’re yet to take decision- INEC

Reacting to the development, INEC’s Director Legal Services, Bawa said that the commission is yet to take a decision on the matter.

He said “INEC is still studying the judgment and the ex-parte order from both parties. One is a judgment and the second is an exparte order. So the commission has not taken a position about the two to ascertain which of the two names is authentic. By law, the list for the National Assembly will be published on January 13.

“I am confident that by Monday (to day), the commission will reach a decision because of the publication of the list on Tuesday, January 13. The commission will take a decision on January 11 or 12 So the Anambra list must come out on that day (13) with other lists from all parts of the federation.”
