Democracy as defined by Abraham Lincoln is “Government of the people, by the people, and for the people”. It is a system of government in which people exercise their political power through periodic election of leaders by themselves or their representatives. Representative democracy is a system where citizens elect individuals to represent them in government and make decisions on their behalf. In a representative democracy, elected officials act as a link between the public and the government, making decisions and passing laws on behalf of their constituents. They are answerable to the people who elected them and can be removed from office if they fail to represent their interests adequately. The very essence of representative democracy lies in the fact that the will of the people is fulfilled through representative bodies directly elected by the citizens themselves, and elected officials are accountable to the electorate for their actions. John Stuart Mill, as a proponent of representative democracy focused mainly on how to ensure efficient government and respect for personal rights and freedoms, whereas the Frenchman Charles Louis de Montesquieu created ideas on democracies, which are still characteristic of modern democracies. Montesquieu spread the idea of a representative democracy, whereby the people would elect their own representatives to make decisions and promulgate laws. The proponents of representative democracy have the people of Ikono State Constituency at heart when they emphasized that representative officials should emerge from the collective will of the people. In other words, people who aspire for political offices should surrender themselves for proper scrutiny by the people so as to earn their mandate. Recall that since the advent of democratic governance (fourth republic) in 1999, several individuals have served the people of Ikono Local Government Area in different capacities and the impact of their representation could only be assessed by the people either positively or negatively. As the build up to 2027 general elections has begun in earnest, one individual that the people of Ikono State Constituency must bank on for effective representation in Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly is Dr. Abasiono Okon. Abasiono Okon has cut his political tooth early in life when he participated actively in different political activities both at the local government level and the state at large. He has played very significant roles to ensure that all candidates of the party emerged victorious at any elections. He is a critical stakeholder in the politics of Ikono and deserves to be supported to represent the people at the State House of Assembly in 2027 general elections. It is important to emphasize here that Abasiono Okon is a political asset that is poised to offer the people effective representation in 2027. He has been engaged in humanitarian activities and initiated many empowerment programs to better the lots of his people. As a devout Christian, Abasiono Okon generously used his resources to support the down trodden in our society especially women and youth. As a young man with business acumen, he founded Abaringo Nigeria Limited and has served as the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the company over the years and he is serving the public meritoriously. Okon's business philosophy was rooted in empowerment and self-sufficiency. He believes that Akwa Ibom people could be drivers of economic growth, rather than relying solely on government. His remarkable professional accomplishments serve as a testament of his unwavering dedication, unrelenting passion for excellence and his enduring legacy in the business community. He successfully promoted and managed several businesses offering a diverse range of services in construction, energy, real estate and agro-allied industry. Despite his demanding business schedule, Okon prioritized relaxation and connection with loved ones. He cherished moments spent with family, friends and business associates. His affable nature made him accessible to people from all walks of life, and he is always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. His Facebook page has become a platform for people to be favoured financially as he frequently donated money to those that are in need of financial assistance without discrimination. At the community level, Okon is deeply committed to the development and progress of his his immediate community, clan, local government and state at large through his numerous empowerment and philanthropist gestures. Through his community service, he demonstrated commitment to the well-being and progress of his people, reaching out to people who are in need and empowered them to maintain and sustain their livelihoods. His entrepreneurial lifestyle has continues to inspire others to follow in his footsteps, making a positive impact on his communities. Despite his remarkable achievements and financial success, Abasiono Okon was driven by a sense of patriotic duty and burning desire to make a positive impact in his local government area, hence his decision to take a plunge into elective politics, contesting for the Ikono State Constituency seat in 2019. Although he was unsuccessful in his bid but his burning desire to render quality and effective representation remain his driving force. It therefore behooves on the people of Ikono local government area to support Abasiono Okon with their mandate to represent them at Ikono State Constituency in Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly in 2027 as he is desirous and well determined to offer the people representation with a human face. Abasiono Okon is a recipient of numerous awards to include Award of Excellence for his meritorious service towards the development of National Association of Ikono Students (NAIS), Uniuyo Chapter; Inducted as a Fellow, Chartered Institute of Information and Strategy Management; Appointed as an Ambassador and presented with Lifetime Achievement Award in education and youth empowerment by Akwa Ibom State Students Parliament; Presented with Award of Leadership by Akwa-Cross Community Union, Republic of Benin in recognition of his exemplary leadership, integrity and dedication towards the growth and service in humanity, among others.

"When a man's ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him," says the scripture as recorded in Proverbs 16:7. This implies that when a person's life and actions align with God's will, God may even cause those who are opposed to him or hate him for no reason to have peace with him. That is the story of Dr. Abasiono Okon, a proud son of Ikono local government area, who like Christ is going about doing good to the generality of people. Abasiono Okon is not a strange fellow in the politics of Akwa Ibom State. He was among leaders of Akwa Ibom youth structures under the immediate past administration of Governor Udom Emmanuel and made positive inputs through different empowerment programs for the women and youth respectively. He has been very relevant in the state and also played prominent roles at different political era either at the State level or in his local government area of Ikono. It is unfortunate that the ongoing campaign of calumny and mudslinging to smear his name in public is a subtle plot to demarket him ahead of 2027 State House of Assembly election in Ikono State Constituency. Again, as recorded in Matthew 10:36 says, "the enemy of a man is a member of his household," the ongoing paid media onslaught by Prof. Utipmfon Jimmy and his co-conspirators is aimed to antagonize a man who is already blessed and favoured by God, and it will fail woefully. Abasiono Okon is a businessman and philanthropist of high repute with track records of integrity, accountability and prudential management of both human and material resources. He is the CEO/MD of Abaringo Nig. Ltd. The Ikono born businessman believe that hardwork and perseverance were essential for success. Abasiono Okon's remarkable business and professional accomplishments serve as a testament of his unwavering dedication, unrelenting passion for excellence, and his enduring legacy for community development. His legacy will continue to inspire the younger generations to come. He holds Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Prowess University, Delaware USA, and another PhD in view from University of Abuja. He is a Fellow, Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria and Fellow, Institute of Arts Management and Professional Studies. He is also a Member, Charted Institute of Information and Management.

The Senator representing Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District, Dame Akon Eyakenyi PhD today at the closing ceremony of the Skills Acquisition Training Scheme sponsored by her for members of her constituency, dolled out empowerment packages to over 200 graduands of the Scheme. In a colorful event at Farlem Hotel, Eket, Senator Eyakenyi flanked by other dignitaries graced the event which attracted lots of people across the senatorial zone. It would be recalled that Senator Eyakenyi on Monday September 21st, 2020 flagged off the second phase of her Skills Acquisition Training Scheme for members of her constituency. The training which covered areas like entrepreneurial development training, poultry farming, pastries and confectionery and tailoring had trainees drawn from across the twelve Local Government Areas within the district. While over a hundred entered for entrepreneurial training, others preferred poultry farming and feed production while the rest went for tailoring and confectionery. The four categories of trainees had a weeklong intensive training mainly practical sessions. The trainees who were provided with training materials also had their transportation fares taken care of by the Senator who made sure they were well fed throughout the period of the training. At the end of the training, over a hundred graduated from the entrepreneurial training category, over sixty from pastries and confectionery, over fifty from tailoring and over fifty trainees graduated from the tailoring category. The palpably elated graduands who could not conceal their excitement and joy, thanked Senator Eyakenyi for the privilege given them to acquire skills capable of turning their economic situations around. They lauded the commitment and passion with which the trainers handled the training. To demonstrate their gratitude to the Senator, graduands of confectionery department presented her with a cake. In the spirit of the celebration of Akwa Ibom State 33rd creation anniversary, the graduands adorned the cake with the state color, map and Dakkada logo. The tailoring class also made a presentation to the Senator while the entrepreneurial class staged a playlet for the Senator. Above all, the graduands prayed for the Senator to have a successful tenure. In their goodwill messages, representatives of the three federal constituencies commended Senator Eyakenyi for her superb performance in the Senate so far. They thanked the Senator for remembering those who voted for her. They urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the knowledge acquired and the starter packs while enjoining them to continue to support Senator Eyakenyi. Speaking on behalf of the trainers, Mr. Frank Anunobi thanked Senator Eyakenyi for the opportunity given them to train Akwa Ibom South constituents. He commended the graduands for conducting themselves properly during the training and prayed for more opportunities to be back in Akwa Ibom. In her remarks, Senator Eyakenyi thanked God who is the giver of all things. In her words “all we have are borrowed from God. We owe Him gratitude and thanks for his benevolence." The Senator thanked the good people of Akwa Ibom South for the mandated entrusted in her care. She said she will continue to do everything within her reach to better the lives of the owners of the mandate she holds. Senator Eyakenyi said it is better to teach one how to fish than give them fish. "Entrepreneurship is the way to go today because there are no white collar jobs anymore. With the skills you have acquired and the start up packages, you can build your life from there if you are serious. "I look forward to patronising all of you during this year’s Christmas celebration. The tailors should be able to make 31 different dresses for me, the poultry farmers should supply me chicken, the bakers should be able to supply me with snacks while graduands of entrepreneurial development training should come up with sellable business plans." Speaking further the Senator said "I shall do more as God strengthens me but please, be the ambassadors of good news; speak the truth and defend the truth. Appreciate the little efforts of your leaders to spur them up to do more for you. Condemning and denying your leaders’ efforts demoralise and discourage them. Continue to support the PDP, Governor Udom Emmanuel and other PDP leaders." The Senator commended Governor Udom Emmanuel for his undying passion for the development of Akwa Ibom State. "We in Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District are proud of the strides our brother and leader is making. We salute his dogged determination to rewrite the development narratives of Akwa Ibom State and, we shall stand by him to the end." High point of the event was the presentation of empowerment packages to the graduands. While graduands of entrepreneurial development training were given startup cash, those in the poultry category got cartons of day old chicks, feeds, cages and cash to kickstart mini poultry businesses. Graduands of tailoring were empowered with sewing machines while those in the pastries and confectionery category were given flour, mixers and cash to start up small businesses. They were as well issued with certificates by Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN). Dignitaries at the occasion included; Mr. Samuel Ekpenyong, Commissioner Local Government Service Commission; Dr. Charles Mbong, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor; Hon. Etienne Bob, Commissioner, House of Assembly Service Commission; Pastor Effiong Bassey Ubokulo, PDP Chairmanship Candidate, Oron LGA; Hon. Godwin Ben, SSA to the Governor; Mrs. Abigail Edohoeket, SA to the Governor; Prince Cyril Ati Okpo, SA to the Governor; Mr, Larry Iyohokwa, Chairman Akwa Ibom State Newspaper Publishers amongst others. By Akan Emah "My dear people of Eket Senatorial District, you know my credentials, antecedents and character. I assure you that when I represent you at the Senate, I shall offer you a Better Deal." The above promise expressed by Senator Akon Eyakenyi during her electioneering campaigns was the dream she had for the people of her Senatorial District, if given the mandate to represent them at the Red Chambers of the National Assembly. On February 23, 2019 , the people of Eket Senatorial District identified with her vision and gave her an overwhelming mandate through their votes for the Better Deal contract. Of all the National Assembly Members from the State, her election was one of the two, that was not challenged in the tribunal. On June 11, 2019 , the National Assembly Member-elect was sworn into office along with her colleagues. The field was now open to work the talk. A year has now passed. Are there really footprints of representation that offers an indication that the people of the Senatorial District are in for a Better Deal? In our clime, a lawmaker is expected to play the key role of legislative business while also paying attention to the material needs of her constituents. How then has the Senator fared in these expectations? LEGISLATIVE BUSINESS Understanding the need to carry out legislative duties that will impact significantly on the lives of her constituents and the country, Senator Akon Eyakenyi has sponsored a bill, two motions, and cosponsored eight motions and petitions which are undergoing various legislative processes. Few months into office, the Senator sponsored "A Bill To Repeal the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron Act And To Establish The University of Maritime Studies, Oron And Related Matters". This bill when passed into law and accented to by the President will upgrade Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron to a full-fledged University of Maritime Studies. The Bill having been referred to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and Tetfund. Interestingly, a public hearing was scheduled for stakeholders to give inputs towards making the bill an acceptable and implementable law. Although the public hearing was affected by the lockdown occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic, fillers have it that the public hearing will hold soon. What is more, the Senator has not only focused on bills. She has sponsored and cosponsored several motions to her credit and benefit of the country. It could be recalled that in less than one month in the Red Chambers of the National Assembly, Senator Eyakenyi established her presence vocally and intelligently. On July 2, 2019, the ebullient Senator presented her first motion on: “Urgent Need to Address the Sorry State of Computer Education by Providing Training for Teachers and Basic Computer Facilities in Public Schools.” The motion which was well received and deferred till the setting up of Senate Committees was eventually referred to Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education upon the setting up of Standing Committees of the Senate. The committee went to work and subsequently presented a comprehensive report which was adopted and forwarded to the relevant ministry, departments and agencies of government for implementation. The Senator was poised to build on the good foundation she laid, she further sponsored a motion on: “Urgent Need to Address The Menace of Banditry In The Gulf of Guinea And Nigerian Waters.” Considering the richness and timeliness of the motion, the attention of the Senate was courted and It received a unanimous support across political divides and geopolitical spread. The motion which was referred to the Senate Committee on Maritime Transport, produced a comprehensive report which was adopted and resolutions taken. Interestingly, since legislative business demands partnership in most cases, the Senator has cultivated robust relationship which has led to her cosponsoring motions. Among the motions she has cosponsored are: 1. Motion On The Need To Increase Funding To Primary Health-Care Centres; 2. Urgent Need To Ascertain The Status of Nigeria’s Extended Continental Shelf Project And The Constitution Of An Ocean Advisory Committee; 3. The Deplorable Conditions Of Ikot Ekpene-Umuahia Highway Linking Akwa Ibom State and Abia State; 4. Existing Petroleum Subsidy, Ensuring Self-Sufficiency In Domestic Refining of Petroleum Products; 5. Urgent Need To Look Into Incessant Loss of Commuter Lives on Our Waterways; 6. The Urgent Need To Establish A Medical School At Modibbo Adam University of Technology, Yola And To Upgrade The Federal Medical Centre, Yola, To A University Teaching Hospital; 7. Urgent Need To Review And Recover Additional Revenue Accruable To The Government of the Federation From Sharing Contracts Pursuant To Section 16 Of The Deep Offshore And Inland Basin Production Sharing Act Cap D3 LFN 2004; and 8. Urgent Need To Perform The Housing Mortgage Financing In Nigeria To Meet The Escalating Housing Demand In The Country. Moreover, the Akwa Ibom South Senator has been outstanding in her oversight role. As the Vice-Chairman, Senate Committee on Education, she is reputable in the collaborative role of her committee to ensure the MDAs of our educational sector implement policies that will lift the sector to a height worthy to be reckoned with. On top of that, the Distinguished Senator has not only been visible during plenaries but also vocal and passionate in her contributions on the floor of the Senate. Nigerians will always remember her topnotch presentation on the floor of the Senate in October 2019, when she expressed disappointment with the 1.5 percent Allocation to Education in the 2020 national budget proposal. With courage, she expressly spoke truth to powers insisting that Nigeria requires a State of Emergency or revolution in Education to address its present status as the country with the highest school dropouts in the world. The Senator pointed out that with meagre allocation to this critical sector when over 10million young people are yet to access basic education, the infrastructure in a sorry state, inadequate teachers, and poor emoluments, there must be an immediate change. Her submission that "Any country that wants to grow and develop must invest in Education and Manpower", will continue to resonate in the minds of Nigerians for a long time. At the same time, the Senator is always alert to issues that affect her constituents. Recently, when ExxonMobil sacked numerous Akwa Ibom indigenes which left her constituents mostly affected, she rose to the occasion and sent a strong-worded statement to the Oil Giant calling for their reinstatement. Interestingly, Senator Eyakenyi's performance in legislative business has earned her induction into Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians and commendation from stakeholders of her constituency and beyond. Nevertheless, despite an excellent performance on the floor of the Senate, how has the Senator related with the home front? ATTENTION TO HOME FRONT In order to be abreast of the dynamic needs and yearnings of her constituents thus sustain the relationship she had created, the Senator built a strong channel of communication and access between her and her constituents. Just a few months into office, Senator Eyakenyi opened a Constituency Office so that Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District constituents could have unrestricted access to her. Here, she has engaged over 60 staff. While some work in the Constituency Office, others are serving within their respective Federal Constituencies as nexus between the constituents and the constituency office. As part of her community development gesture in complementing the effort of Governor Udom Emmanuel in human capacity development, the Senator has been remarkable in the aspect of Entrepreneurial and Human Resource Development. In her 100 days in the Senate, Senator Eyakenyi launched her first Youth Skills Acquisition Training Scheme which started off from Oron Federal Constituency in August 2019 while Eket and Ikot Abasi Federal Constituencies took their turns in September and October respectively. Consequently, over 400 youths of Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District were trained in Scaffolding, Industrial Safety, Rigging, among other skills needed for the Oil and Gas sector. In addition to this, Senator Eyakenyi has reached out to students with grants, extended empowerment packages to women and the physically challenged within Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District. Many students have been supported, while many more are still drawing regular support from the Senator to further their education. More so, in just one year in the Senate, the Senator has utilized effectively her experience and connections in government service to facilitate the employment of some of the trained youths of the Senatorial District. Others have equally been assisted to secure employments in State and Federal Government agencies, departments and institutions. She has helped many to get enlisted in several paramilitary services, while many are awaiting enlistment. Equally, she has assisted over 500 of her constituents to get enlisted into the Federal Government Social Investment Schemes like N-Power, Conditional Cash Transfer and the likes. Yet, the Senator is far from resting on her wings of performance. Concerned about the health status of her constituents, in November 2019 she co-sponsored free medical services for the people of Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District where several persons were treated. Over 600 eyeglasses were given out to people coupled with free medication given to many. Lots of surgeries (major and minor) were performed during the outreach that lasted for more than 10 days. Moved with her known empathy for people with a special condition, Senator Eyakenyi sponsored a Football Tournament for inmates of Eket Correctional Centre and made donations to the Centre's Management for the upkeep of the inmates. Furthermore, while commemorating her 60th birthday on February 24, 2020, the Senator celebrated with 250 widows selected from across the State. Each of them retired home with empowerment packages from the Distinguished Senator. It is also on record that the Senator has sponsored burials for many, taken care of medical bills of scores, paid rents for several persons who were at the verge of being thrown out by their landlords, and empowered several individuals to start-up businesses. During the last Christmas and Easter Celebrations, Senator Eyakenyi reached out to hundreds individually and in groups. Interestingly, the Senator has not tired out in her humanitarian acts. In the face of COVID-19 which has caused many homes untold hardship, Senator Eyakenyi has lived up to expectations. During the lockdown, she had supported more than 300 individuals with cash to help them cushion the adverse effects of the lockdown. As the pandemic lingers with its negative consequences, she has not relent with the gesture. SUSTENANCE OF THE LIVING DREAM The rich educational background of the Senator as a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education, experience in government service as the Chairman Governing Council of the Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua from where she resigned in 2018 to contest for the Akwa Ibom South Senatorial election will continue to play a fortifying role by equipping the Senator for her committee responsibility. As a former Minister of the Federal Republic and now a Senator, she has an enriched background to attract opportunities down-home. Her robust connection with the leadership of the Senate evidenced in how Nigerian Senate President , His Excellency, Ahmad Lawan, led a powerful delegation of Senators including the Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo -Agege, Senate Chief Whip - Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Senate Minority Leader Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, Senator Sabi Abdullahi, Senator Robert Boroffice, Senator Danjuma Goje, Senator Abba Moro, Senator Shuaibu Lau, Senator Betty Apiafi, Senator Uche Ekunife, Senator Obinna Ogba, Senator Francis Faduansi, Senator Michael Opeyemi, Senator Aisha Binani, Senator Lekan Mustapha, Senator Kola Balagun, Senator Olobumi Adetumbi, Senator Thompson Sekibo, Senator Rochas Okorocha, Senator Elisha Abbo, Senator Gershom Bassey, Senator Bassey Albert (OBA) and Senator Chris Ekpeyong to Uyo to attend the 60th Birthday Celebration/Thanksgiving Service of the Senator in March 2020 speaks volume of how rightly placed she is to push for the interest of her people. It is also on record that , in addition to these mentioned Senators, the Clerk of the Senate - Mr Nelson Ayewoh , the SA Political to the Senate President - Alhaji Abdullahi Gumel, the DG NILDS - Prof Abubakar Sulaiman and many other staffers from the National Assembly were also in Uyo for that celebration. Her cordial relationship with the State government is also a plus that will continue to foster synergy of development to her constituents thus provide to them a Better Deal in representation. Distinguished Senator Akon Eyakenyi is a round peg in a round hole. As a transformational leader , she has served her Local Government Area then as a Supervisor for Education, Youth & Sports and as the Executive Chapter President - Better Life for Nigerian Women. She has also served the State as a Board Member of the State Secondary Education Board before being elevated to the position of a Commissioner in the State. She is a former Minister of the Federal Republic. Senator Eyakenyi notes that she has included projects across the district in the budget. She assures that as soon as there are releases, those projects will be executed. How heartwarming it is to note that the Senator representing Akwa Ibom South has pledged to continue living the Dreams of her mandate. She states " I am unreservedly committed to the service of my people and shall continue to do all within my capabilities to offer our people a Better Deal. " I sincerely thank the owners of the mandate for the support and cooperation I have enjoyed this past year and look forward to have greater dose of same in the years ahead. I promise to continue to serve with utmost sense of humility and devotion ". Akan Emah is Rotarian, a Media / Public Relations Practitioner.

The Senator representing Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District in the 9th Assembly, Dr.(Mrs.) Akon Eyakenyi has called for resumption of schools with precautionary measures to be put in place nation-wide. The Senator who is the Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, stood in for the Chairman of the committee made this known yesterday Tuesday 23rd June, while speaking during an interactive session between the Committee and the Federal Ministry of Education yesterday in Abuja. Accordingly, the meeting was convened to interact with the Hon. Minister of Education on ways to address or proffer solutions to certain identified pressing issues affecting the basic education in this challenging period in the country. Dr. Akon Eyakenyi observed that our children have been at home without adequate alternative arrangements to access formal knowledge and education, which according to her, has equally added to the prevalent challenge of over fourteen million out of school children in the country and the need to get them enrolled in the Basic and Secondary education. Senator Eyakenyi noted that, the major concern of the 9th Senate as documented in its Legislative Agenda, to be championed by her committee. Steadily on course to deliver on her "Better Deal Agenda", the senator who herself is a trained educationist and a retired secondary school teacher, lamented the devastating effects of the prevalent covid-19 pandemic in the last four months ravaging the world. She further observed that, No doubt, the education sector particularly the basic and Secondary education sub-sector is one of the worst affected by the pandemic and the resultant effects of the lockdown have disrupted the academic programmes and calendar of the schools, without adequate prior preparations to curtail the effects. In this wise, she therefore advised the Ministry of Education and major stakeholders in the Basic and Secondary Education sub-sector to be more proactive and innovative to fashion out adequate covid-19 preventive measures that will aid curb the spread of the pandemic while she called on the government to reopen schools. © Babson Eduno June 23, 2020

Otobong Sampson June 20, 2020 A year after she emerged as senator for the district, Dr. Akon Eyakenyi has come under not unexpected scrutiny - more so as elected government leaders recently scrambled to present their scorecards in public space for grades on their first full calendar year in office. Gusts of verdict have flurried in bids to rate the senator's service to the district and her constituents. Many have thumped-up her honest efforts. A few do not agree - they habour a resentment. Dissensions could be borne out of conviction. At other times, it isn't germane. While a vast number of the people have okayed her strides, she is listening to the minority voices with differing opinion. In the assertion of MLK jnr, 'a genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a moulder of consensus'. Her ambitions for the district haven't waned. This can be seen in the energies she exudes in the pursuit of those ambitions. It is seen more in her deep and non segregatory relations with constituents. To motivate people, leaders must be close enough to relate with them. In 12 months, the activities of her predecessors have been enlarged. She has promoted greater collaborations and trained many young persons with brave aspirations. Political consciousness is peaking across Nigeria. Electorates, in contrast to previous times, have upped their demands from leaders and representatives; they are asking for more. The people would have to salute the approaches adopted by the senator in her search for workable solutions where old patterns have failed. Her promise of a 'Better Deal' was sub-grouped into five templates. Quality Representation; Economic and Political Inclusiveness; Enterpreneurial and Human Resource Development; Education; and Infrastructural Development. In all but the last, her strides have been stark staring obvious. She's had two motions, one in education and the other on security in Nigerian waters and in the Gulf of Guinea. She has co-sponsored eight motions including one on the imperative to increase funding to primary health care centres. There's her bill which seeks to upgrade Maritime Academy, Oron, to a full scale Maritime University. In her first 100 days in office, 400 young people across the three federal constituencies were trained in the skills of scaffolding, industrial safety and rigging. 250 widows were rewarded during her 60th birthday merriment. There are several start-ups that bear testament to Eyakenyi's benevolence. Whether in health or educational assistance, her good-heartedness has shone through. The argument that the senator has served below par is straight mischief. That she has exhausted just 12 months of a four year mandate renders such protestation ridiculous. If advanced from the springboard of genuine ignorance of her activities, then it is excusable. While a few would stay loyal to their prejudice, there's no evidence that she is what they assume. Her representation has served majority constituents the most and served nobody the least. The clamour for 'more' should not be misconstrued for underperformance. It is simply an acknowledgement of her capacity to match rising expectations. With every leadership begins the immersion in an unending process and not a quest for final destination. So far, Eyakenyi's senate peregrination has been a surefootedness in patching together a mix of a new model and the old order. If anyone appreciates big-picture thinking, her first year service should win a fair prize. Hers is creating a new culture of diligence, inventiveness and cerebral freedom. The old system has bought constituents a third-class seat for so long on the national economic train. Unarguably, the senatorial district is bouncing back from an era of shattering representation. Failure to embrace a new era of provocative leadership and efforts at reconstruction would menace the future of the political, social and economic structure of the District.

By Ubong Creativity Amidst the dreaded Covid-19 pandemic that is threatening the global community, in Nigeria attention has been shifted to Edo State with the current political quagmire between the suspended National Chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole and his political son, Godwin Obaseki ahead of the gubernatorial election slated to hold on September 19, 2020. Barely less than 12 hours after the governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shaibu have resigned their membership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State after the governor met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, a Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja affirmed the suspension of the National Chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole dismissing his appeal as lacking in merit. It will be recalled that there has been a power tussle between the estranged political godfather, Adams Oshiomhole and his political son and governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki for months over what pundits described as insubordination on the part of the governor. Several attempts to broker peace with both camps even with the intervention of President Buhari and leader of APC, Bola Tinubu have proved abortive. There has been series of accusation and counter-accusation by both camps which has regenerate a national discourse but all entreaties to bury the hatchet has hit the rock as neither Adams Oshiomhole nor Godwin Obaseki is ready to concede. Last week Friday, the APC Governorship Screening Committee screened-out governor Godwin Obaseki as not qualify to participate in the coming APC Primary slated for June 22 on the ground that there is inconsistency in his educational qualification. Reacting, the governor said he will not appeal the ruling of the Screening Committee as it is teleguided by Adams Oshiomhole to serve his parochial interest of fronting his rival and former PDP Governorship Candidate, Pastor Ize Iyamu. Considering the decision taken by the governor to resigned his membership of the APC that gave him the mandate to fly the party ticket four years ago, some pundits have forecasted that he will not win the election even if he fly the flag of the main opposition party PDP in the state. A Journalist and Public Commentator, Babajide Otitoju on Journalist Hangout Monday Edition of June 15 on TVC Television said that there is no way Godwin Obaseki can win his re-election in Edo State as the National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole with support from Federal Government will mobilize all security apparatus in the country and overpower him at the election. INEC had in February fixed the governorship election in Edo for September 19 while the APC had fixed their party Primary for June 22. After announcing his resignation from APC at the Presidential Villa, Governor Godwin Obaseki has expressed confidence that he will win his re-election bid against the conspiracy by Adams Oshiomhole, declaring that Edo people are with him while his deputy, Philip Shuaibu has restated his commitment to go wherever his boss is going. The deputy governor said he has taken their political destiny in their hands and with God on side and support of Edo people, they will triumph. Meanwhile, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, 14 Members of the State House of Assembly, 16 local government Chairmen and 196 Councillors have resigned their membership from APC with governor Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shuaibu ahead of their formal defection to the Peoples Democratic Party. Moreover, the Court of Appeal affirmation of Adams Oshiomhole’s suspension from the party has changed the political dynamic of Edo State. While Godwin Obaseki is expected to join the main opposition party in the state, PDP after visiting Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State respectively, his estranged political godfather Comrade Adams Oshiomhole on the other hand has been relinquished of his office as the National Chairman of APC and his security details stripped off him by the court. The question is: How will Adams Oshiomhole prosecute the election of his prefer Candidate, Pastor Ize Iyamu and on what capacity? Again, the swapping of political position by Governor Godwin Obaseki and his former rival, Pastor Ize Iyamu who is moving to APC is a subject of political interest in Nigeria. While Obaseki will have a waiver from PDP to fly the party ticket, Pastor Ize Iyamu is penciled down for APC ticket but the election might not be a walk-over for the two candidates. Nigerians are watching with keen interest to see the outcome of this political rumble in Edo State.

...pledges total support to Udom Emmanuel led administration By Ubong Creativity A grassroot movement in Eket local government area, Dakkada Ambassadors, Eket Chapter have adopted Hon. In a motion moved by Kufre Ineh and seconded by Wisdom Itauma, the group unanimous resolved that after a thorough assessment of the chairman performance from transition to elected position especially in the area of human capacity development, youth empowerment, education, women, etc, Frank Archibong deserves a second term. The Chairmen of the 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Edo State have reaffirmed their support for the re-election bid of Governor Godwin Obaseki, noting that they are fully committed to the progressive ideals of the governor and his battle against godfatherism, thuggery and impunity. In a statement signed by the Chairman, Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Edo State, Hon. Jenkins Osunde and the 17 other council chairmen in the state, the association described the disqualification of Governor Obaseki from the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election as a theatre of political fraud staged with predetermined outcomes and decisions sponsored by the surrogates of the APC National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. The chairmen noted, “We the undersigned Local Government Chairmen of all the 18 area councils in Edo State have held an emergency meeting to review what we consider an outrageous and undemocratic process of both the screening exercise as well as the prejudiced decision consequently reached.” According to the ALGON, “We therefore observe and resolve that the entire screening exercise prior to the beginning and during the process itself was submerged in various surreptitious conduct which in fact cast thick clouds of doubts on the legitimacy and fairness of what should have been an otherwise historic and democratic step for our party. “That various actions by the Screening Committee, particularly by the way it sought to specifically create malicious publicity regarding Governor Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki, has thus confirmed the previously held impression that the screening exercise was a theatre of political fraud staged with predetermined outcomes and decisions sponsored by the surrogates of the APC National Chairman, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole.” They added that on closely reviewing the activities of the screening committee, it was infallible to posit that the decision to disqualify the Governor constituted a profound affront to decent internal democratic practices of a respectable political party, noting, “The result of the screening exercise was incontestably aimed at diluting the mass-base electoral support for the incumbent Governor by engendering the perception that His Excellency had doubts to clear about his profile.” The LGA chairmen said that rather than weaken the overwhelming popular support for the Governor, the dubious disqualification by the committee has caused a buoyant and enthusiastic response of support for the Governor across all the senatorial zones of the state. The chairmen reiterated their support for Governor Obaseki’s reelection bid, noting, “That as the chairmen of the third tier, people-oriented paradigm of Nigeria's Federalism, we carry with us the hopes and aspirations of our constituencies as we reaffirm our commitment to the progressive agenda of continuity till 2024 for the Governor. All the way with Obaseki and Shaibu.”

A few days ago I joined some critics, albeit innocently, to call out Hon. David Lawrence for letting down Eket people and abandoning his core legislative duties as defined by the unique problems and situation of Eket. But with the recent posting of the legacies of our state legislator, accompanied with photographs, and unable to be denied by any person on ground, not even the critics, it is reasonable to conclude that Hon. David Lawrence is a blessing to humanity, more so, as his media attaché, Daniel Edon, has just released an information that the greatest yearnings of genuine Ekid people is being handled by Mr. Lawrence silently. This position has been supported by Dr. Emmanuel Ekott, which strengths the veracity of this information. Looking at the photos of the empowerment items given by David Lawrence to his constituents, it is like a big trade fare yard, and every good hearted person should be overwhelmed with joy and gratitude whether or not he or she was a beneficiary. The law maker’s community development initiative evidenced by the Idua civic center, complete with offices and state -of- art aesthetics is dumbfounding. Indeed if a person is in Eket, but claims not to see what Hon. Lawrence has done, then such persons need help beyond the ordinary. With assurances of an interventionist agency Bill for the development of the oil communities, together with all the feat recorded by him, I think Eket have never had it so good. I wish to call on those playing bad and belly politics with the development and future of Eket for stomach interest to think of the society above self. Let us not criticize a political office holder only for reason that we have not had personal benefit from him or her. Let us allow political office holders to work for societal interest. It is true, and right too, that politicians have to enjoy the juices flowing from political offices. But let us stop holding political office holders to ransom by sheer greed and personal aggrandizement. And where they fail to satisfy our grotesque expectations, we launch campaigns of calumny against them. During the last criticism of Hon. Lawrence aforesaid, I could observe that the interest of some critics was premised on stomach infrastructure, whereas effective representation including being a voice for the maligned and suppressed people of the oil producing communities of the state should be the concerns. I don’t regret criticizing Hon. Lawrence or any person else, for this is the essence of democracy and good governance. But it is advisable that, to avoid mischief and changing of narratives, Hon. Lawrence should power an effective media management team with a supervisor, void of sycophancy and stomach journalism, to manage his image and keep the population informed of his good works. This is very necessary in politics to avoid misinformation and mischievous disinformation. Undoubtedly, Hon. David Lawrence has a legacy to show. That’s why upon criticism he, I belief, immediately through his aides published his legacies/achievements without fear of being contradicted. He apparently informed the people through his media aide, Daniel Edon, that he is pushing through the much contentious interventionist agency Bill. In conclusion, Hon David Lawrence Udofa is a laurel of our time, the jewel of our generation and the bride of our pride. Solidarity forever! Manfred Ekpe Jr. Student of law/civil right activist.

Disqualification of Obaseki, impunity carried too far Rivers State Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike says the Nigeria Governors Forum has become a toothless bulldog because it has lost focus on its role in defending the rule of law in the country. Governor Wike said the Forum used to be non-partisan and a powerful voice on national issues. He noted that since the All Progressives Congress(APC) took over the leadership of the body in 2015, Governors have turned to beggars. The governor made the assertion at media parley that held at Government House, Port Harcourt. "Before 2015, the Governors Forum used to be very powerful as symbols of their respective states but APC killed it because they were protecting the interest of the ruling Party. "During of one of the rerun elections in this state, my security aides were withdrawn thus exposing me to danger, the Forum did not say anything because the Chairman was a member of APC. " I told them then that what they were doing was wrong. Now they have become a Beggars Forum even when there are constitutional infractions. "You can see that APC Governors say that they are progressive. You can see how progressive they are when they keep quiet when a fellow sitting governor is disqualified from contesting elections. " Adams Oshiomole campaigned for Governor Obaseki four years ago. The same man has turned around to say that Obaseki has a defective certificate. "Has Oshiomole apologised to Nigerians that he supported someone with a defective certificate? Who is saying that a sitting governor has a defective certificate? Is it a man that does not have a certificate? " Oshiomole should be told to practice what he preaches. " APC wants to perpetrate impunity in Edo State the way they unleashed terror in Rivers State in 2019. "They think because they have the Army, Police and INEC they can do anything and get away with it. "They tried it in Rivers State but God gave us the will to say no. I hope Edo people will also say no to their impunity," he stated. Speaking on Governor Obaseki's planned defection to PDP, Governor Wike said he would be happy to receive him. He however, said that he would not guarantee automatic ticket for him because Edo people would decide. "Edo PDP have a role to play. There is nothing like endorsement. But I must tell you that I am not happy the way he was disqualified by the APC because it will affect his integrity, "he said. The governor debunked insinuations made by the State Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association(NMA), Dr. Obelebra Adebiyi about the State's response towards COVID-19 and said the State Government has given the Ministry of Health all that it requires to fight the pandemic. The governor stated that the increasing number of Covid-19 cases results from more testing conducted on persons and Obelebra who is in charge of the state treatment centre cannot politicise the fight by creating unnecessary panic to score cheap political points. PRESS RELEASE TO MAKE OUR DEMOCRACY A THING OF BEAUTY Uyo, June 12, 2020: 1001+ Voices Initiative for People Empowerment (1001+ Voices), a community based non-governmental organization joins all Nigerians to mark and celebrate today being Democracy day, as the fervent symbol of Nigeria’s democratic struggle. In May 2019, the President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government declared June 12 as the National Democracy Day. Today, effectively marks the official celebration as a nationally recognized holiday, set aside to commemorate Nigeria’s struggle to enthrone genuine people’s democracy. 1001 Voices upholds that democracy is fundamental to a nation’s socio-economic growth as a vital stimulus for its development. To this end, true democratic values must be engaged, especially in ensuring the imputation of egalitarianism, a sense of belonging, and the fostering of a culture of equal opportunities including the democratization of institutions, enthronement of the rule of merit, and engendering gender equality. This is of fundamental importance to growing our hard-won democracy. In its true spirit and symbol as essentially captured by the objective of its essence, 1001+ Voices urges all Nigerians, especially politicians never to be allowed to go back on her newfound democratic paths; and advises the Federal Government to strive and ensure the effective implementation of democratic standards in the lives of the people and among the nation’s institutions. Key to these is the separation of powers and institutional sanctity of the various arms of government, especially the Legislature and the Judiciary, to truly make them independent and autonomous in the service of nation building. In line with this expectation, 1001+ Voices appreciates ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to guarantee the autonomy of the State Legislature and the Judiciary, which are considered the bastions of our democracy as enshrined in the constitution. We call on Government at all levels to work to deepen democracy and tacitly ensure the actual implementation of the doctrine of separation of powers, which we consider sacrosanct to guaranteeing a healthy democracy. 1001 Voices counsels that no efforts should be spared in the nation’s attempt and civil calls to right the wrongs of the past, engender democratic principles, and guarantee more liberties and freedoms to the citizens, especially in the area of leadership recruitment process. The nation’s political parties as veritable anchors of our democracy must be recurrently transparent in this direction, as well as, eminently reflect regular and direct participation of the masses in its processes. Such bold steps will allow for internal democracy to become enthroned and guarantee unhindered participation in the recruitment and selection of individuals of proven integrity to drive the growth of our democracy. 1001 Voices notes the key importance of youths in our growing democracy. Opportunities must be provided for our youths to actively participate in determining how their future will play out. This requires establishing the right atmosphere that engenders growth and the ample realization of the full potentials of our youths within the ambit of an evolving democracy. 1001 Voices pays tribute to our many heroes and heroines who died by paying the supreme price in the process of actualizing the struggle. “We cannot in all sincerity, therefore, discount the enormous sacrifice made by these known and unknown compatriots who led the struggle to free our nation from the shackles and jackboots of erstwhile militocracy that reigned large on the land”. Of special mention is Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola who was the icon of the June 12 pro-democracy struggle. Finally, 1001 Voices expresses an ever-abiding faith in the resourcefulness and resilience of the Nigerian people to build a democratic society capable of sustaining a better and more functional Nigeria. We cannot just throw our hands up in the air and give it up to the politicians to do as they please. Like Barak Obama said: “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” Let us act now by contributing to make democracy work for all Nigerians. Happy Democracy Day to Nigerians. Ide Owodiong-Idemeko National Coordinator

"Further, take heed that you faithfully perform the business you have to do in the world, from a regard to the commands of God, and not from an ambitious desire of being esteemed better than others." - David Brainerd. It is true that all we have are loans from God for His service and that of humanity. From our lives to our wealth and the positions we occupy, they are gifts from God for which we all must render accounts. Conscious of this fact, I had from a very tender age, adopted a personal philosophy which hinges on doing that which is for the greater good of the people. It is exactly one year today since I assumed duty as Representative of Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District in the Senate. I am very grateful to our people for the privilege accorded me. I gave my words during the electioneering period, that I shall offer our people a Better Deal. That has been my guiding principle all through the last one year. Less than 2 months in office, we launched the Skills Acquisition Training Scheme for youths of the district. In all, more than 400 youths across the 3 Federal Constituencies have been trained in oil and gas related areas. We have also extended grants to women, students and the less privileged. Over 250 widows across the state have been empowered to enable them cater for their families. We have assisted our constituents secure employments and many have been enlisted in the paramilitary services. Some of the trained youths have been placed in oil servicing companies. We opened the Constituency Office 3 months after inauguration and over 60 of our constituents are in my employ either in the office or as Liaison Officers across the Federal Constituencies. This has gone a long way to engaging these workers positively. There is a saying that health is wealth. Only a healthy population can create wealth and keep our society going. In this wise, I cosponsored free medical services for our people. Many surgeries were performed and other ailments handled. Over 600 glasses were donated besides loads of drugs given to people. About the same time, drugs were donated to 8 of the 12 local government areas within the district. I have sponsored a Bill for the upgrade of Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron to a full fledged University of Maritime Studies, Oron. I also have sponsored Motions on "Urgent Need to Address the Sorry State of Computer Facilities in Public Schools" and "Urgent Need to Address the Menace of Banditry in the Gulf of Guinea besides cosponsoring the following motions: a) Motion On The Need To Increase Funding To Primary Health-Care Centres b) Urgent Need To Ascertain The Status of Nigeria’s Extended Continental Shelf Project And The Constitution Of An Ocean Advisory Committee c) The Deplorable Conditions Of Ikot Ekpene-Umuahia Highway Linking Akwa Ibom State and Abia State d) Existing Petroleum Subsidy, Ensuring Self-Sufficiency In Demostic Refining of Petroleum Products. e) Urgent Need To Look Into Incessant Loss of Commuter Lives on Our Waterways. f) The Urgent Need To Establish A Medical School At Modibbo Adam University of Technology, Yola And To Upgrade The Federal Medical Centre, Yola, To A University Teaching Hospital. g) Urgent Need To Review And Recover Additional Revenue Accruable To The Government of the Federation From Sharing Contracts Pursuant To Section 16 Of The Deep Offshore And Inland Basin Production Sharing Act Cap D3 LFN 2004 h) Urgent Need To Perform The Housing Mortgage Financing In Nigeria To Meet The Escalating Housing Demand In The Country. To me, I find fulfilment that I have had the grace to be available and accessible to our constituents as I have spent almost every weekend in Akwa Ibom since my inauguration in June 2019. I have included projects across the district in the budget. Soon as there are releases, they will be executed. I am unreservedly committed to the service of my people and shall continue to do all within my capabilities to offer our people a Better Deal. I sincerely thank the owners of the mandate for the support and cooperation I have enjoyed this past year and look forward to have greater dose of same in the years ahead. I promise to continue to serve with utmost sense of humility and devotion. God bless Akwa Ibom South! God bless Akwa Ibom State!! God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria!!! Senator Akon Eyakenyi PhD, Representing Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District.

By Borono Bassey Culled from Nation Newspaper, Page 30 December 7, 2018 Sometime in September this year, I had visited the Jubilee Syringe Manufacturing Company in Onna, Akwa Ibom State for the purpose of seeing how I could strike a business deal for the Consulting Firm I work with. In the course of the visit, I got to learn that the Syringe Factory is set to expand its production capacity from the current volume of 350 to 400 million syringes annually to an impressive annual production volume of 1 billion syringes, by the first quarter of 2019. The Managing Director of the Jubilee Syringe Manufacturing Company Mr Zubeyu Gulabi, while reechoing this, said the expansion, which has already been preceded by strategic actions, is to help the company launch into markets outside Nigeria, especially into countries within the Subsaharan African region. Now, here is the thing; a company does not propose this kind of ambitious growth and expansion plan without taking the security situation in the environment they operate into serious consideration. The reason is simple, a little hostility in an operating environment can stand in the way of a company’s profits, prevent them from making plans for expansion and in extreme situations, force them to move their business elsewhere. If the Management of the Jubilee Syringe Manufacturing Company succeeds with the planned expansion of their production capacity, it will birth more opportunities for the people in terms of new jobs and the will trigger the emergence or development of other economic enterprises. For instance, the influx of people into Onna, the environment where the factory is located, will promote real estate business and trigger patronage for goods and services in that locality. New firms will get distributorship deals in that planned expansion. The benefits will be far-reaching for Akwa Ibom people and Nigerians. Other factories attracted to Akwa Ibom State by the Emmanuel adminstration in the last three years may also be considering or have already attempted different levels of expansion. For instance, the AKEES Factory which was known for just two products, Pencils and toothpicks, have morphed into a fullfledged industrial park that now houses additional factories like the fully automated plastic factory and an hydro form blocks moulding factory as well as an artisan training centre. The backstory on the major factor that has allowed for the contemplation of, and will possibly drive the realisation of the ambitious growth plans in these companies is the atmosphere of peace that Akwa Ibom has enjoyed under Governor Emmanuel’s watch as Governor of the State. But, what strategic moves did Emmanuel make in the pursuits for the peace currently enjoyed in Akwa Ibom State? As part of his remarks shortly after taking the oath of office as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr Udom Emmanuel had declared that his administration will maintain zero tolerance against all forms of criminality in the state. By way of walking the talk, Governor Emmanuel with folded sleeves, immediately begun the process of restoring peace to Etim Ekpo, and Ukanafun Local Government Areas as well as other parts of the state which he came to meet in crisis. Prior to Governor Emmanuel strategic intervention, Ukanafun and Etim Ekpo Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom State had been two most terrorised areas in the state for more than a period of two years. Militants, cultists and kidnappers had unleashed unimaginable terror in almost all the villages making up the two Local Governments. Those residing in these villages and communities were forced to flee to neigbouring towns and Local Governments as sleep was becoming an expensive luxury to afford for the inhabitants. Local administration in these areas was almost grounded and schools were abruptly shut down even as the hoodlums stole food crops, livestock and other items from their owners at will. Sadly, some people were reportedly killed, several abducted, properties including vehicles and houses were burnt in that reign of terror. But, in keeping with his resolve to restore peace to these areas at all costs, Governor Udom Emmanuel extended an olive branch to the militants and cultists. As at the last count, the hoodlums numbering more than 420 had embraced the amnesty deal and surrendered their cache of ammunition to the then State Commissioner of Police, Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, who coordinated the amnesty committee with all the heads of various security operatives as members. Ogunjemilusi has since been posted and promoted as AIG Zone 6 Calabar, Cross River State. Driven by the motive to uproot a major tree through which many forms of criminality tend to manifest, Governor Emmanuel had also gone ahead to proscribe no fewer than 32 cult groups in the state. Today, economic and social activites are picking up again in Ukanafun and Etim Ekpo Local Government area, even as plans had already been put in motion to rehabilitate the repentant militant by giving them a legal and sustainable source of livelihood. As you read this, the moving train of infrastructure expansion and consolidation of the Governor Emmanuel-led administration had already made a stopover at Ukanafun. This stopover has led to the flag off of a 15.0km Ikot Akpan Afaha-Ikot Oku Usung road project with spurs in various parts. Impressively, these audacious moves by the Governor Emmanuel-led administration to enthrone an atmosphere of peace in Akwa Ibom has attracted a lot of positive ratings of the state by various non-government and government agencies and organisations. An organisation, the Foundation for Peace Professionals (FPP) had in their 37-page maiden report presented to newsmen in Abuja earlier this year, rated Akwa Ibom as the most peaceful state in South South. The executive director of the Foundation, Ambassador Abdulrazaq Hamzat during the presentation said the data used for the analysis and ratings were obtained from the Police, National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and other local and international governmental and non-governmental organisations. According to him “Akwa Ibom is most peaceful state in South-South, Kaduna in North West, Kogi in North Central, Osun in South West, Imo in South East and Taraba State in North East, Kogi State is second most peaceful state in Nigeria and most peaceful in the North. Imo state is the most peaceful state in South East and 5th most peaceful in Nigeria. “ Hamzat said In another testimonial, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division of the Nigerian Army with headquarters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Maj Gen Jamil Sarham, had adjudged Akwa Ibom as the state with the lowest crime rate amongst the 36 states of federation. But, Emmanuel’s efforts in sustaining an atmosphere of peace in Akwa Ibom state is not just limited to the fight against criminality. In actions and utterances, Governor Udom Emmanuel has not left anyone in doubt as to his burning desire to bequeath a peaceful state to Akwa Ibom people. In a legendary manner, Emmanuel has maintained an applaudable level of maturity and calmness in the face of provocation from the opposition who swear to deploy all forms of Federal Might in disturbing the peace of the state and consequently eroding the high level of investors’ confidence in Akwa Ibom state. These provocations cast in the form of outright intimidation from agencies of the APC-led Federal Government, scathing insults on the person and office of the Governor, open threats and even the use of security agencies to intimidate state government officials and loyalists of the Governor have not caused Governor Emmanuel to abandon his commitment to sustaining peace in the state. But, one thing is clear. The 2019 governorship election will be a referendum on whether Akwa Ibomites will prefer returning to the dark days where citizens lived in fear of politically-motivated killings and abduction and other vices or if the enjoy the journey of peace and prosperity they have already begun under Governor’s watch. That election will be a choice between Emmanuel whose visionary and pragmatic leadership has lifted several Akwa Ibom sons and daughters from poverty by way of job and wealth creation through the over seven industries he has attracted to the state, and a man who was part of an administration that promised 31 industries and never built, revamped or attracted a single to the state for 8 solid years. It is imperative to note that events and credible opinion polls are constantly revealing one truth; that Akwa Ibom people will prefer to keep traveling the road of peace and prosperity with Governor Emmanuel till 2023. The future of Akwa Ibom sure looks brighter.
