ROAD NETWORK, KEY TO ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATION

Patriot Dantes Odogwu.

With the construction of over 300 roads by Gov. Okowa's administration since 2015, it is clear that the working Governor understands the importance of road network in boosting production capacities and fostering the growth of economic activities among the populace.

He has succeeded in turning the entire state into a construction site by renovating and constructing several economically viable roads across the state.

Every LGA has several roads to be proud of, especially such ones that were already dubbed, abandoned.

The Governor's developmental strides are unbeatable, no wonder he has been severally found worthy of series of awards by well meaning institutions and corporate bodies.

To be candid, the Governor has no rivalry as he seeks for a second term in office because the projects on ground are enough testimonies of one who should be allowed to complete the good work that he has started.

City Development: Delta Government Begins Work on NPA Expressway into Ugbuwangue and others

By Etolor Anslem

Aware of the importance of good road infrastructure in the socioeconomic development of any modern city, the Delta state government has embarked on the rehabilitation of several roads in Ugbuwangwe and NPA Expressway in a bid to give Warri the modern city status it deserves and its importance as the economic capital of Delta state.

8 failed roads within Ugbuwangwe, Warri South Local Government Area, were approved for rehabilitation in the area. The roads are Vincent Uduaghan, Slaughter, Einyan Close, off Slaughter Road with a spur to Touyo Mama Close, Ugbuwangwe, 911, Secondary School by Health Centre Junction, NPA Expressway by Ugbuwangwe Market and Portion of NPA Expressway/Ogunu Road Interchange.

In November as part of the administration commitment towards infrastructure development in the road sector, the state government approved the construction and rehabilitation of 70 roads across the three Senatorial Districts in the state.

There is no doubt that Gov Okowa means well for Deltans across various sectors of the state which is an indication that he came prepared for governance.

16,000 Deltans To Benefit From Govt’s N500m Micro-Credit

BY ANDREW IKEHI

With less than two weeks to the end of the year, the Delta State government has said that it will not close its 2018 “Balance Sheet” without the disbursement of over N500m to prospective beneficiaries of its small and micro-credit loans as captured in the 2018 budget.

Should it happen anytime soon, and, barring any unforeseen circumstances, no fewer than 16,000 Deltans cutting across different trades and local government areas of the state would benefit, the Executive Secretary, Delta State Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (DSMSMEDA), Mrs. Shimite Bello has said.

Although no specific date was mentioned for the disbursement, Bello, who disclosed this during an exclusive interview with The Pointer in her office at Asaba, listed some of the target groups and associations to benefit from the proposed disbursement exercise to include; Members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Butchers’ Union and Artisans.

Others, according to the DEMSMA boss include; Farmers association, STEP and YAGEP beneficiaries, welders union, among others.

Her words; “As I am speaking to you now, we have procured some equipments that we are ready to give out. We have screened all the would-be beneficiaries and, very soon, the owners of those equipment will come and pick them. We are indeed happy about that.

“Aside the equipment, we are also prepared to give out grants to farmers. We have spent the whole year screening beneficiaries to make sure that everybody who was supposed to get was given.

"We are careful in doing this in order to ensure that those who have benefited before were not given again.

“As I speak with you, we have perfected arrangements with UBA to ensure that everyone involved received alert so that they can start preparations for farming early enough next year.

“Again, we have also engaged transporters, members of the NURTW to find out what we can do for them. They have been able to come out with something which the Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa has graciously approved. So, they are on queue.

“We have also spoken with the butchers union. We have to go through this process because; experience has shown that there are people who do not repay loans.

"We did analysis on the behavioural patterns of the different trades and we discovered that for some people, it is better to give them grants while some are comfortable with loans.

“We were able to get approval for grant for quite a number of people in excess of 16,000 while for the loans; we are looking at certain trades such as butchers, transporters, as well as STEP and YAGEPreneurs. I can tell you that before the end of this year, there will be a lot of smiles.

“Most of what we did now was from the feedback at the town hall meetings; that was where we chose the different trades.

"This year, before December 31, we are going to be disbursing in excess of N500m. Everything is set and we are ready to go,” Bello assured.

Respite for Ayakoroma Community as Delta Government Begins Construction Work on Ayakoroma Bridge

Etolor Anslem

The people of Ayakoroma community will soon have a sigh of relief as the Delta state government has resumed construction work on the Ayakoroma road and bridge project in a bid to open up the creeks towards accelerated development of the state and improve commercial activities within the area.

The Ayakoroma road project has been one of great controversy over the last few months with certain opposition elements accusing the government of neglecting the people of the area from the transformation projects going on across the state.

It will interest deltans to know that this administration has shown greater commitment towards development of rural communities including those in the creeks who abinitio were neglected.

The state government similarly undertook the construction of Burutu township road, Ogulagha/Youbebe/Biniebiama road in Burutu local government area as well as Palace road in Oporoza, construction of Okerenkoko township roads and Main Axial road in Warri South West, which is a major milestone by the Sen Okowa led administration towards ensuring inclusive development of the state with emphasis on providing access roads to those who contribute meaningful quota to the nations earning that have been abandoned over the years.

Development of the rural communities especially those in the creeks is one of the cardinal objective strategy towards achieving sustainable peace in the Niger Delta, and Gov Okowa has gotten this right with his spur for development of rural communities.

When the people have a sense of inclusion in the nations development, they have a duty to promote peace and protect oil installations which form part of our national assets.

It is therefore imperative for us to give this administration the necessary support it needs to succeed in it's bid towards transformation and development Delta state.

GOV. OKOWA AND THE HISTORY BOOK OF NIGERIA POLITICS

By Patriot Dantes

‘Uneasy Lies the Head that Wears the Crown’ is an age long adage that cannot be separated from leadership; especially in politics where the leader is in a social contract with the people.

The general expectation/pressure from various quarter is better imagined than experienced. The occupant is held spell bound by the people with such insurmountable expectations that may never be achieved.

Actually, not minding the ambitious expectations from the people, there are minimum standards of achievements expected of elected officers, in line with constitutional provisions for the office. With such achievements in the score card, the officer is commended and the song of continuity or consideration for a higher position of Trust begins to rend the airwaves.

Taking a look at the political trajectory of Delta State, the name Okowa, has stood out in political deliveries. Having served in various capacities under different administration, he has demonstrated foresight, loyalty, pragmatism, practical deliveries of projects, initiated sustainable policies among others.

On the national scene, he had continued to re-write the wrongs of the past and had raised bars in conducting elections in Nigeria. As Chairman of the PDP’s non-elective convention, his fair approach to politicking was showcased to the world and the Party thereafter, appointed him as the chairman of gubernatorial primaries committee for Ekiti State.

Then came the PDP National Convention where more than twelve strong contenders from different States of the country aspired to fly the presidential flag of the Party. The hue and cry and possibilities that the party would implode after the election saw the party leadership beckoning once more on the political maestro, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, to take up another nervy task.

With the trendsetter on the seat of power, the whole process leading to the election of the party flagbearer was done transparently, attracting applause from lovers of democracy though to the chagrin of naysayers. None of the candidates or their representative had cause to question the entire process. The result was eventually declared and majority of Nigerians are becoming ‘ATIKULATED’.

With such demonstrated capacity to deliver on all front, not a few Nigerians have called upon Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, to teach INEC how best to conduct the 2019 elections.

The working Governor has indeed etched his name in the sand of time as a leader with a fair spirit. His open minded approach towards championing the Nigeria of our dream, where votes will count and the aspiration of anyone would not be truncated has been aptly demonstrated.

If I call him the Joshua of our time, I will definitely not be mistaken. EKWUEME! 2019 IS SURE.

GOV OKOWA AS JINX BREAKER

By Barth Ozah

After he successfully steered the Peoples Democratic Party to what has been acclaimed as the “freest and fairest party primaries in the history of Nigeria’s politics,” Governor Ifeanyi Okowa is gradually carving a niche for himself as a jinx breaker. Last week, the Governor played host to former President Olusegun Obasanjo to commission three landmark projects in Boji Boji (Ika North East L.G.A) and Asaba, the state capital. Two of them, the Asaba Township Stadium (now renamed Stephen Keshi Stadium) and the Old Lagos/Asaba road in Boji Boji had inexplicably defied spirited attempts by previous administrations to complete them, leading to widespread public perception that these projects were perhaps jinxed.

Today the story has changed, perhaps a testament not only to Governor Okowa’s ingenuity and managerial acumen but also largely to his spiritual approach to governance. It is no longer a secret that the Governor takes his faith seriously and engages the supernatural power of God to actualise his aspirations for the state.

The Asaba Township Stadium was conceived by the indigenes of the community in the 60s before the then Mid-western Government took over the building of the stadium in 1974 under the late Brig-Gen. Samuel Ogbemudia. Colonel George Agbazika Innih as military administrator inherited the stadium in 1975 . He handed it over to his successor, Commodore Husaini Abdullahi. None of the seven other successive governors that governed the defunct Bendel State was able to complete the Asaba Stadium. Under the current democratic dispensation, Chief James Ibori officially laid the foundation for a modern stadium but, unfortunately, work could not progress before his tenure ended.

While commending Governor Okowa for constructing such an edifice, the former President stated that the stadium would also provide avenue for people to exercise noting, “whoever you are, whatever age you are, you must exercise, you must be fit.” According to the former President, the stadium would boost the economy of the state even as he asked governor Okowa to add hostel facilities in the stadium for people to live in the stadium and have opportunities of training round the clock to enable them become future world champions.

“We must catch them young, we have the facilities, we have to recruit and train them from a very young age, Obasanjo remarked. “I was here to perform the ground breaking ceremony of the stadium. I am here to commission it 14 years after and I will be here again to see the hostel. Governor Okowa is not just a Road Master, he is also a Stadium Master, and because of the work he has done, he is also the Bulldozer.”

The Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Chike Edozien, represented at the occasion by the Iyase of Asaba, Chief Patrick Onyeobi thanked Governor Okowa for his interest in the development of Asaba and other parts of the state, observing that since the coming of the Governor, Asaba is wearing a status befitting its status as a state capital. On his part, Governor Okowa described former the former President as the father of “modern day democracy,” in Nigeria.

According to the Governor, “beyond entertainment and sports tourism, we must try and grow the local economy. This stadium is one of the ways we are trying to grow the local economy because for every sporting activity in the stadium, a lot of socio-economic activities take place.”

The dualised 9.5km old Lagos/Asagba road and the Owei-Ekei / Owa-Alero dual carriageway equally suffered long neglect having been awarded by the administration of James Ibori but could not be completed until Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan came and reawarded the two contracts yet work could not progress until Governor Okowa’s administration broke all barriers to fixed the projects.

At Owa-Alero were the former President was hosted by the Ika people, after the commissioning of the dualised 5.6 km Owa Ekei/Owa-Alero road, the excitement of the people was palpable.

Mr. Gbekile Joshua, Owa-Alero Youth President, in an interview revealed that he was in Junior Secondary School when work began on the road. He narrated: “My brother this road was a nightmare to us for years. The entire people of Ika appreciate Governor Okowa for wiping out our tears and for saving us from untold sufferings. We pray God to give him power to do more. We suffered for long because of the deplorable condition of the road before but Okowa has wiped out our tears. We are praying for his re-election in 2019. The only thing we owe the Governor is to be united and work for his re-election.”

Speaking at the occasion, Obasanjo said. “When I was told Governor Okowa is a road master, I didn’t know what they were talking about but today the Governor has proved to me that he is a road master, and for you to be a road master you must be a bulldozer. He is interested not only in road infrastructure but he is also interested in education and health. At any stage in our lives we will require medical care and that is why we brought National Health Insurance Scheme to enable Nigerians take care of themselves. We must have good medical services so as to stop medical tourism. When you provide health, education and road you must provide jobs for the youths otherwise governance will be meaningless.”

He thanked governor Okowa for paying all the arears of local government staff and that of teachers in the state, describing Okowa as a good leader who deserves re-election in 2019 saying; “Okowa needs second term to consolidate because he is a good product. You don’t throw good product when you don’t know what the new one will bring.”

Earlier, the Chairman Delta State Traditional Rulers Council, HRM Obi Emmanuel Efeizomor, the Obi of Owa, who welcomed the former President on behalf of his people stated that “we are privileged to have you (Obasanjo) in Owa. Obasanjo is a man who knows Nigeria in and out. Governors that served the state did second term each and Okowa’s own should not be an exception.”

On his part, Governor Okowa said the commissioning of the 5.6 km Owa-Ekei/Owa-Alero road was long overdue even as he thanked the people of Owa where he hailed from for providing the enabling environment for Government to provide the much needed development in the area.

“I want to thank you, especially the monarchs, for providing the needed environment for us to develop the entire state. We have taken our road infrastructure to all parts of the state including the riverine areas because we believe that when roads are in good condition it will open up commerce. One thing that gladdens my heart is the Insurance Health Policy. We have been able to domesticate that law and as at today over 300,000 Deltans have registered in the scheme.”

He said his administration has decided to pay the premium for underage children and pregnant women as well as 20 widows in each of the 270 wards of the state, stressing that Delta is the first state to domesticate the health insurance policy with all the civil servants enrolled.”

Governor Okowa who disclosed that the campaign should be concentrated at the unit levels, emphasised, “tell the truth to the people, if there are things you don’t understand, get information from the nearest person or put a call through because, we are not going to deceive our people, we must always tell the truth.”

“I believe that Delta State is a PDP state, I believe that we have enough projects to campaign with, so, those who are planning to rig the election should know that our votes must count,” he said while listing some of the achievements of his administration in the health sector, road construction, job creation, among others.

He congratulated members of the campaign council and admonished them to remain united, saying, “if you go into the campaign with one mind, there is nothing that can stop us, there is a need for total reconciliation in our wards and local government areas; the candidates must be humble, in whatever they do, they must be seen as driving the process of the campaign, there must be sincerity of purpose, we must be inclusive in all that we are doing.”

Chairman of the PDP in the state, Barr, Esiso had while inaugurating the campaign council, said, “we want grassroots based campaign, campaign at the unit levels; we must tell our people what Governor Okowa has done in the last three years and that Deltans believe in zoning ; Delta State has turn by turn zoning, the people have accepted the principles of zoning. “
Chairman of the campaign council, Prof. Oyovbaire on behalf of members of the Council thanked the leadership of the PDP for choosing them to drive the campaign process.
He observed that the performance of Governor Okowa in the past three years will make the campaign easy as Deltans are aware that they will gain more in the next four years.

We're Ready To Deliver Okowa; Anioma Must Continue In Office - Nwoko
... Confirms Funding Ugboko, Onicha-Ugbo Road Project

By: Patrick Ochei

The newly appointed Deputy Chairman of Governor Okowa's Governorship Campaign Council, Prince Ned Nwoko has declared that the Campaign Team is ready to deliver Senator Ifeanyi Okowa as a second time Governor of Delta State in 2019, adding that Anioma must continue in office to complete their two terms mandate.

He made this statement on arrival in the state when inspecting the ongoing STARS University project at Idumuje-Ugboko in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State.

Ned Nwoko affirmed that Governor Okowa had made the right decision with the team he had put together ahead of the 2019 Governorship election, maintaining that victory is sure for him.

The renowned philanthropist equally confirmed funding the Idumuje-Ugboko/Onicha-Ugbo federal road project, awarded to ULO Consultants Ltd by the NDDC.

Prince Ned Nwoko stated that the federal road linking Onicha-Ugbo and Idumuje-Ugboko to Abuja had long been abandoned until efforts were made by him to get it awarded by the NDDC.

However, the Anioma humanist took over the funding of the remaining portion of 2km by releasing N100 million to ULO to complete the construction.

According to him, "I am not doing this for any political reasons. I am doing this for the people. My people cannot easily access their communities or travel conveniently due to the dilapidated nature of the road.

That was my pain and what pushed me to fund the contract. We give God the glory for the ability to reduce the pain my people go through on that road", Ned posited.

The popular politician also hinted that he was sure of victory when judgment is eventually given on the case he instituted against the serving Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, whom he is challenging over eligibility to represent the District and of course the alleged manipulation during the senatorial primary election of the PDP.

Meanwhile, in his opinion as the contractor for the rehabilitation of the Idumuje-Ugboko/Onicha-Ugbo failed road, the Chairman of ULO Consultants Ltd, Chief Uche Louis Okpuno commended Prince Ned Nwoko for his forthrightness and love for his people, appreciating him for making the reconstruction job possible.

Okpuno therefore, assured of keeping to the standard as agreed in the contract agreement.

Moreover, Prince Ned Nwoko will be officially inaugurated tomorrow as the Deputy Chairman of Governor Okowa's Campaign Organization, alongside other prominent PDP members appointed to work for the victory of the Party in the 2019 general election.

PEACE IN DELTA: Okowa Bags NUPENG Award For Oil Exploration

Delta State Governor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa has bagged NUPENG's Award for Peace in recognition of his contributions to peaceful oil and gas exploration in the Niger Delta region.

Governor Okowa who was conferred with the award today (06/12/2018) in Abuja during the 40th anniversary celebration of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) appreciated the labour unions, security agencies, traditional rulers, youths and all other stakeholders in the oil and gas industry for their positive contributions to the sustainable peace and development in Delta State.

"I receive this award with gratitude, we will continue to contribute our little quota to the development of our state and our nation. But i must truly appreciate NUPENG for their drive to have a more peaceful and better Nigeria. I thank you for recognising our modest efforts in ensuring peace and security in Delta State which has impacted positively on not just the economy of Delta State but the entire country. As the largest producer of oil and gas in Nigeria it is imperative that all stakeholders must continue to work hard for sustainable peace and development in the oil and gas sector he said

He noted that government will continue to strive for peaceful coexistence among oil companies and their host communities as it will encourage more investments in the sector.

Presenting the award to the Governor, General Secretary of NUPENG, Comrade Adamu Song said the Governor was being honoured for his role in ensuring peaceful oil and gas exploration in the Niger Delta region.

President Muhammadu Buhari at the occasion was conferred with the award of Grand Commander of Labour while former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon bagged the Peace Ambassador Award for his contributions to peaceful Nigeria with his Nigeria Prays project and former Inspector General of Police Mike Okiro was made a patron of NUPENG.

Buhari, Okowa Urge Labour Unions To Embrace Dialogue
...As NUPENG Celebrates 40th Anniversary

President Muhammedu Buhari and Governor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa have assured labour leaders of freedom of association urging them to embrace dialogue rather than confrontation in resolving industrial disputes.

Speaking today (06/12/2018) in Abuja at the 40th anniversary celebration of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) which has the theme "Nigeria Oil & Gas Workers; Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow " President Muhammadu Buhari who was the Special Guest Of Honour, noted that his administration believes in constitutionality especially as it relates to Section 40 of the Constitution which gives room to freedom of association

The President .represented by Honourable Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, lauded NUPENG for its contributions to the growth of the oil and gas industry in Nigeria and the actualisation of June 12 mandate commending Trade Unions for their role in the defence of democracy.

He assured that the Petroleum Industry Bill before the National Assembly will be given speedy consideration once the National Assembly passes the Bill.

Governor Okowa noted that labour leaders have achieved more using dialogue rather than confrontations in addressing issues, stressing "I believe that the best unionists are those who learn to engage in dialogue and to that extent i must appreciate all the unions in Delta State for partnering with us through dialogue to help us derive peace and consolidate on the gains that have been made by previous administrations in our dear state".

"Unionism is good and it is something that must be encouraged as a nation and in the various industries because without unions there will be chaos in work places. NUPENG is strong in pushing for the welfare of her members but we must have it in mind that as a union we have a lot of role to play in the affairs of the nation whenever we gather to discuss", the governor added.

While congratulating NUPENG on its 40th anniversary celebrations, Governor Okowa commended the organisation for its maturity in handling labour issues stating "NUPENG has been a very reasonable union in the course of administering her members in this nation because there are some people when they do realise that they are a very important organisation as a union they can use it very wrongly to hold the nation to ransom but that has not been the drive of NUPENG and we thank God for that and that is why unions must partner with those in government in Nigeria in the interest of our nation,"

Chairman of the ocassion, General Yakubu Gowon in his welcome address lauded NUPENG for her role in the development of the oil and gas sector in Nigeria and urged NUPENG to address image challenges facing the union as most Nigerians see the union as a very powerful union that can hold the whole nation to a standstill over industrial strikes. He recalled NUPENG's contribution to fighting for the growth of democracy in Nigeria adding that the sustenance of Nigeria economy depends largely on NUPENG's contributions to the growth of the oil sector which remains largely the country's source of revenue.

Ealier President of NUPENG, Comrade Williams Akporeha said the union has contributed immensely not only to the growth of the economy but in the enthronement of peace and development of the Nigeria's democratic experience in the last four decades. He noted that casualisation in the oil and gas sector is threatening the existence of the union as both local and foreign companies in Nigeria.

Okowa Warns Against Crisis In Niger Delta

DELTA State Governor, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa has called on those who are trying to foment crisis in the state using oil surveillance contract as a ploy to desist as such could cause economic challenges to the nation.

Governor Okowa made the call today (28/11/18) in Asaba when he addressed some aggrieved youths from host communities to OML 30 and some ex-agitators from phases one to three of the Federal Government amnesty programme.

According to the governor, "I want to advise that whosoever is plotting against the people, those who are benefiting and through the process of surveillance contracts are being empowered, should allow Delta state remain peaceful, because, in peace, we will be able to produce and export more crude oil and in that export the nation and the state gains,"

"It is our hope that nobody especially as the oil prices are going down should take any action that will foil the quantity of oil that we are currently producing," he stated while calling on the protesters to remain peaceful as his administration would take necessary actions to address their grievances.

The governor who came out from the state security council meeting to address the protesters continued, "I want to thank you and appreciate you, our youths for the way you have put yourself together; secondly, I want to appreciate you for deciding to make the protest peaceful; that is the hallmark of Delta youths; we are knowledgeable and we know that what is right is what should be done."

"This protest is happening on the day we are holding our security council meeting and the security agencies are here; the agencies have been working hard with the support of our people and our youths to keep the Trans Forcados line safe and we thank God that because of the safety of that pipeline the oil production of this nation has increased."

He emphasized, "we have held series of meetings with stakeholders and we have long agreed to the fact that it is best to secure our pipelines when we are in charge by ourselves; you cannot come and watch over someone else's backyard; the people who own the place know best how to protect their property and if since June 2017 that the Trans Forcados line has been open, it has been functional and our oil production and export has continued to increase and there has been no complain; I will find it very disturbing if a new contract is being awarded not to talk about awarding the said contract under a higher cost; that will definitely not be responsible and I believe that Mr. President will not accept this; I am very confident that he will not support such a cause and I do not believe that the Nigerian nation who realizes that as at today we still heavily depend on the proceeds from oil and if our oil production has improved to the level that we have some level of comfort as a nation and as a state, I do not think that an action that will lead to the disruption of our oil production and export is something that will be welcome."

"Our nation is doing well and anything that is being done that will cause the reversal of the progress that we are making in terms of oil production will be an economic sabotage and I believe that any action being taken now to re-award the surveillance job to a new company that will come to displace the locals will be an economic sabotage and I do not think that is what we will support as a state, so, we are asking you to please be patient since you have decided to follow the due process to protest peacefully; we thank and appreciate you for the information that you have passed to us; we will act as quickly as possible to ensure that there will be no disruption to the progress that we are making thus far."

Mr Tennyson Oriunu had in an address on behalf of the aggrieved youths, stated, "on the 8th of this month, close to a thousand angry youths and ex-agitators from the 111 communities of Ijaw, Urhobo, Itsekiri and Isoko ethnic nationalities who are hosts to the OML 30 facilities, came to Asaba to peacefully complain about the directives of some companies to start another war in our communities and in Delta State by hijacking the surveillance contract of the Trans-Forcados Pipeline, in one of the most shady contract deals you may have heard about."

The protesters called on Governor Okowa to intervene to avoid crisis in the state as a result of the re awarding of the surveillance contracts to people who are not familiar with the terrain.

PoliticsOKOWA: Nigerian Pillar Of Sports by ubikings(op): 6:16pm On Nov 28, 2018
OKOWA: Nigerian Pillar Of Sports?

BY FIDELIS EGUGBO

THAT Delta State Governor, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa is passionate about sports development is no longer in doubt. Even his greatest critics will give him the thumb up for his roles in sports development in the country. It is equally not in doubt that Delta State is naturally endowed with sporting talents as the history of Nigeria cannot be complete in the area of sporting activities without Deltans occupying prominent spaces.

At national and international sports events, Deltans have always excelled, but, Governor Okowa, determined that the tempo and prowess recorded by the people should rather increase during his tenure, has revived the Principal’s Cup and followed it with the Headmaster’s Cup. To say the least, these tournaments have ensured that schools in the state are engaged in football activities which have kept the youths busy.

The icing on the cake was when he mandated Mr Chiedu Ebie, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, a workaholic gentleman who believes more in action than words to move beyond football to organize athletics championship for schools.

The new introduction will see to the harnessing of budding talents, and their nurturing to stardom.

However, with all that Deltans have been doing to the development of sports in the country, one may wonder why it has not played host to the National Sports Festival. How many national or international events has the state played host to?

The former Captain of the Super Eagles who later coached the team, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi, was from Delta State. A stadium has been named after him in the state capital, the Stephen Keshi Stadium and Governor Okowa, aware that the stadium is very vital to the hosting of sporting events, embarked on its reconstruction..

That efforts to reconstruct the stadium paid off In August this year, as the stadium played host to its first international event, the 21st African Senior Athletics Championships. It was a continental sporting event that saw more than 50 African countries converging in Asaba and that was the signal that a new sporting venue has been established - Asaba. To buttress the fact that the Stephen Keshi Stadium was designed to project Asaba as the sporting destination of the world, the Aiteo Cup final between Enugu Rangers and Kano Pillars was played in the stadium.

In all the events, the 23, 000 capacity stadium was always filled and it was indeed, a good development for sports.

Of course, the nearness of Asaba to Onitsha, less than two hours drive to Benin City, and other places have made it such that the stadium must always be filled by sports-loving people. Only few days ago, Governor Okowa was at the stadium to watch the Super Eagles play the Cr
anes of Uganda in a friendly encounter.
Of course, it was natural to say that the ticket for the football match sold out as it got to a stage that spectators were stopped from entering the stadium as it was already filled to capacity.

A day before the match between the Super Eagles and the Cranes, former Nigerian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, was at the stadium to commission it.

The commissioning of the stadium by Chief Obasanjo was another historic event given that the Otta-born politician, more than a decade ago, laid the foundation stone for its construction.

Elated, Obasanjo thanked Governor Okowa for his interest in sports development and as a wise man who has seen a lot in the area of sports, challenged the governor to build hostels in the stadium so that identified talents could live there and train for 24 hours.

It is generally agreed that the Stephen Keshi Stadium has come to stay and within the last few months, has played host to a lot of sporting events.

Historically, too, it is a fact that the Super Eagles trained in the stadium ahead of their qualifying match against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON). Naturally, the Super Eagles left Asaba and went to South Africa where they held the Bafana Bafana to a 1-1 draw to qualify for the AFCON billed to hold at Cameroon next year.

Qualifying for the AFCON was, in a way, rewarding to Governor Okowa and his workaholic team as the governor, on behalf of the Delta State Government, promised the team the sum of $25, 000 for every goal scored. Converted to the Nigerian currency, it amounted to the sum of N9 million per goal. As someone who keeps his promises, Governor Okowa, shortly after the Super Eagles’ encounter with the Cranes of Uganda, organized a state banquet for the team and their visitors at the Government House, Asaba where he doled out the sum of $50, 000 for the match against the Bafana Bafana.

According to the governor, "as a state government, we did make a promise that we will give 25, 000 dollars per goal in the AFCON qualifying match in South Africa. In my mind, I know we scored two goals, not one goal, because the second goal was wrongly disallowed; so, we will fulfil our promise with what we saw, not with what was announced by the referee.

We are very happy that you left for South Africa from Asaba because you enabled us to witness the first international flight from the Asaba International Airport; I am truly excited this evening that we are hosting our dear Super Eagles as a state government and the Ugandan Team that earlier played with the Super Eagles at the Stephen Keshi Stadium. We truly enjoyed ourselves because, the two teams played good football.

It was good to host the Super Eagles, they have been with us for some days now and I believe that the people, Deltans and other Nigerians in general are excited. Though, they drew the match with the Cranes of Uganda, both teams played good game and it was gladdening to know that both teams have also, qualified for the African Cup of Nations," Governor Okowa said.

Stephen Okechukwu Keshi (1962-2016) will be happy that the stadium named after him has come to life. He was Captain of the Super Eagles, a great football defender who later became coach of the team. Of course, in 1994, he led the Super Eagles to the World Cup and that same year, took the team to Tunisia and came back with the trophy. Stephen Keshi was among the only two Africans to lead their national team to win the AFCON as a player and as a Coach. He also led the team to qualify for the Word Cup as a coach. So, the Super Eagles were at the right place where there were many motivating factors to lead them to South Africa to qualify.

While they did not visit the grave of their former Skipper to pay him homage before departing for South Africa, it is expected that they will be back in Asaba again next year to be in the right spirit before departing for the AFCON in Cameroon.

Yes! Asaba is a place for sports tourism and the Delta State Government should also, go a step further to make the final resting place of Stephen Keshi a tourist attraction. It is important to note that Illah is not far from Asaba and with the influx of foreigners to Asaba for football tournaments, the tomb of Stephen Keshi, his house and those memorable things he associated with should be preserved and made befitting for those who may want to visit his final resting place because, he was an international figure. His death may grow the economy of the state and his community, Illah if well managed. The people are already reaping the benefits of having Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba.

Imagine bringing the national team of Togo to play a friendly match in Asaba. Keshi, as the Coach of the team, qualified them for their first World Cup and if they come to Asaba, they will naturally want to visit Illah and I am confident that the team will be eager to be in Asaba for a friendly tie, maybe during the anniversary of Keshi's death.

Stephen Keshi contributed a lot to the development of Nigeria football, he was head coach for the Junior Eagles for several years and part of the coaching crew of the Super Eagles before he became the coach. He was adored by players and most often referred to as the Big Boss as a mark of respect.

At the commissioning of the stadium, Chief Obasanjo said, “whoever you are, whatever age you are, you must exercise, you must be fit. We must catch them young; we have the facilities, we have to recruit those who will win, train them from young age. Mr Governor, build a hostel where you will put people that you will train day and night and they will be going to school from the stadium and in whatever sports, Delta State will be the best.

I was here to perform the ground breaking ceremony of the stadium, I am here to commission it and I will be here again to see the hostel,” the former President said, asserting, “Governor Okowa is not just a Road Master, he is also a Stadium Master, and because of the work he has done, he is also the Bulldozer.”

It is worthy to state that before commissioning the stadium, the former President had also commissioned the dualised old Lagos/Asaba road, from Emuhu junction to Agbor-Obi junction, the dualised Owei-Ekei/Owa-Alero road, from old Lagos/Asaba road to Owa-Alero round about.

In Africa, it is widely known that one positive action will attract a lot of other positive actions. So, when the Super Eagles entertained football lovers in Asaba during their training periods, they also, became the first set of people to take international flight out of the Asaba International Airport. They moved to South Africa for their qualifying match through the Asaba International Airport.
That flight was a great icing on the achievements of Governor Okowa's administration in the last three years plus because, it saw to bigger planes making use of the airport for the first time and of course, Captain Yahaya Pam, Pilot, Boeing 747 belonging to Max Air which was the first international flight to take off from the airport said, the runway was among the top three in the country.

He described the runway as “ very smooth, good and long in line with international standards," adding that "the ramp is of top notch."

And the big story: When Nigeria was about to lose the hosting rights for the 21st African Senior Athletics Championships, at the last minute, Governor Okowa intervened and agreed that instead of the country to be embarrassed by failing to host the continental event, Delta State would host the tournament. Lagos State had earlier agreed to host the tournament but, at the last minute, chickened out. So, Governor Okowa, as a nationalist, did not look at party leaning but, how the continent would view Nigeria if no state agreed to host the event, bailed the country out.

Again, against all odds and the fear that the Super Eagles would not qualify for the 2019 edition of AFCON, Governor Okowa brought them to Asaba well ahead of the match, provided incentives and encouraged them to go to South Africa and get the ticket to be in Cameroon 2019.

We have seen people described as pillars of sports in Nigeria. While one may not know the criteria used in ascribing such titles to them, one can confidently say that Governor Okowa has done a lot to encourage sporting activities in the country. If one have to consider the fact that Delta State has collected all the laurels in sporting events in the nation in the past three years, one cannot fail to state that another honour beckons on Governor Okowa as he continues with his focused, result-oriented leadership.

To say that Governor Okowa has brought a new lease of life to sports in the sub-region is an under-statement. Where in this area would you see event managers pleading with surging spectators to go to viewing centers instead of the stadium because, the stadium has been filled to capacity? Where in sub-Saharan Africa will more than 50 per cent of the seats in the stadium be occupied 30 minutes before the commencement of sporting activities? These are regular features in Asaba that one will not be surprised to hear that another 80, 000 capacity stadium is in the offing because, as once postulated, Delta State can comfortably host the World Cup.

The state has football stadia at Kwale, Warri, Ughelli, Oghara, Sapele, Agbor, Ozoro and the J.J. Okotcha Stadium at Ogwashi -Uku.

Approval for the hosting of World Cup is given years before the event and I am confident that Delta State has what it takes to host the world because, in all the places where the stadia are located, there are hotels of international standard. It is worthy to note that while there is an international airport in Asaba, there is an airport in Osubi, less than 5 minutes drive to the Warri Stadium while the Benin Airport is less than 10 minutes drive to the Oghara Township Stadium.

If one decides to add to the fun and access the football venues through water, the Seaports in Warri and Sapele will be very useful. Sapele is about 5 minutes drive to the Oghara Township Stadium. Again, any boat from Lagos or any part of the world can berth at the jetty at the Grand Hotel, Asaba or at the Onitsha Port which is about 10 minutes drive to the Stephen Keshi Stadium. In all, Delta State has been positioned as the sports destination of the world. There is a railway line that can also be put to use if such is required to move people to the state to watch football live.

We are watching and as pundits looking at the issues at stake critically, one can only say that the best is yet to come to admiration of the people and to the glory of God.

*TENACITY AND WILLPOWER: THE DRIVING FORCE OF GOV. OKOWA*

By : Bayagbon Daniel

The willpower of an individual drives a person to surmount an uphill task even in the face of mountainous stormy era.

Willpower is the ability to delay gratification, resisting short-term temptations in order to meet long-term goals. It is the ability to go against all odds to ensure a desired fruitful outcome .

It is often said that where purpose is unknown, abuse is inevitable.

The bedrock of Governor Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa's led administration is hinged on this premise.

So many people especially from the opposition in Delta State and beyond are awed by the driving force behind the huge success of Governor Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa's administration.

In retrospect , the inception of Okowa’s administration has demonstrated strong willpower in the capacity to override an unwanted thought, feelings or impulse about the present state of the Nation. Tenacity and willpower are twin drivers to overcoming the circumstances bedevilling the Nation, to a foreseeable great Delta State which is today an envy in Nigeria.

The many sides of Governor Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa has confused political pundits about how he actualizes his dreams for Delta State.

Amarachi Ubani of Channels Television, once described Governor Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa as "a man who knew his onions before setting out to becoming the Governor. Everything seems to be falling in places in Delta State."

In one of my articles about the rapid road constructions across the State, i was left with no choice of words than to brand the Governor , Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa " THE ROAD MASTER " which today, is the new name of the Governor wherever he goes.

It is not a fluke that the vast majority of Deltans, even the opposition, nod their heads in affirmation of the great works of Governor Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa that cuts across the length and breadth of the State.

Okowa has repeatedly put Delta State in the limelight to the world via the state of the art Stephen Keshi Stadium and the YAGEP/STEP Programmes.

Question welling up in my mind in amazement is how the Governor was able to steer the ship in stormy era without complaints or excuses to Deltans like some of his counterparts would do in their respective places of governance.

Suffice to say , my question was laid to rest by Babajide Kolade-otitoju of TVC when he described Governor Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa as " a well put together personality, who achieve his goals because of his administrative prowess and clout."

Need I say more?

Deltans awaits the continuity of Governor Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, knowing well that after his eight year term in office, Delta State will be an enviable place to others.

WHY OKOWA DESERVES A SECOND TERM

By Okolo Hessington Chimennma

As the race for Government House Asaba hots up as the general elections draw near, Deltans are in strategic position to choose between going forwards or handing over power to desperate power seekers with empty promises.

There are some who argue for Okowa's second term on the basis of where he comes from particularly because there appears to be a rotational agreement between the three (3) senatorial zones of the state. The argument in support of this position is actually simple: since Delta Central and South senatorial districts through HE Chief James Onanefe Ibori (1999-2007) and HE Chief Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan (2007-2015) had enjoyed two terms each respectively, Delta North through Okowa should be allowed to enjoy two terms also.

The above argument is very compelling but I am basing my call for a second term for Okowa on the basis of something more egalitarian and even much more important: his scorecard!

I urge Deltans today to take a look at the giant strides of Governor Okowa and return him for a second term.

Despite the fact that he took over the reins of governance at a time there was recession and minimal revenue to the state, Governor Okowa had undertaken bold projects which would frighten the faint hearted!

Take for instance the Asaba storm water drains projects. This multi billion naira project which has reached advanced stages when completed would hopefully rid Asaba of flooding.

Also Governor Okowa has seriously focused on road infrastructure across the state such that it has earned him the sobriquet "the road master", the good thing about his projects is that they are evenly spread across the state. Bridges are being built across Rivers linking the riverine areas with the upland e.g the Ayakromo bridge etc.
The Okowa administration has awarded about 200 roads including internal roads of which about half had been completed.

In education, Dr. Okowa has focused on technical education and has undertaken complete renovation of three of the states technical schools to wit; Agbor, Sapele and Ofagbe and has further extended his hands to the ones located in Kwale, Issele-Uku, and Warri. This is a worthy venture which is geared towards preparing our children for the future.

The Okowa administration has completed the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba which before now has remained a scare on the Asaba landscape. The Stadium has had a chequered history from the 1960s when it was proposed as a community project by the Asaba people through 1974 when it was taken over by the Bendel State Government to when it was inherited by the Delta State Government on the split of Bendel State into two states of Edo and Delta in 1991 passing through several Governments both military and civilian. The stadium built as a multi-purpose edifice had in the short time since it's completion hosted the Senior African Athletics Federation meet bringing Africa to Asaba, the Aiteo football cup finals, the Super Eagles training before their match against South Africa and the Eagles of Nigeria and the Cranes of Uganda international friendly match thereby promoting Sports tourism to the city of Asaba.

The Asaba airport has also received attention by the Okowa administration. The runway is now fully completed and operational with Airfield lighting system; Runway lights, Approach lights and Instrument Landing System being installed to enable aircrafts land even at night. The Airport with the upgrade, is expected to be used as operational hub by Airlines to pave way for early morning flights from Asaba and late flights into Asaba. Tank farm for refueling of aircrafts has been built in the airport. To underscore it's upgraded facilities and status the Super Eagles were airlifted directed from the Asaba Airport to South Africa for their African Nations Cup qualifier against South Africa. Hopefully soon, the Airport will be approved for more direct international flights which will strategically serve the entire South East and South South business people.

The Okowa administration has also undertaken the building of the New Delta State Secretariat. This ambitious project aims to house the Delta State MDAs under one roof thereby saving for Delta State the huge amounts expended annually on rents. The project which is ongoing at a rapid pace is expected to have it's own independent power source which obviously will enhance efficiency of government business.

And here is the clincher for me; the Okowa administration through the YAGEP/STEP program has trained and equipped over 4000 young persons to set up their own busineses and become employers of labour in various fields. Success stories from the program abound.

While it's obviously impossible to state all the Okowa administration has achieved in one sitting, the above is a glimpse of the massive strides Delta State has been fortunate to take under the pragmatic and visionary leadership of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa and why I urge all Deltans to shuns those with no visible achievements for the people.
Deltans should support Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa and re-elect him as Governor come 2019 because of he has done well..

Okowa is moving Delta forwards: let's all join him.

"I BELIEVE IN GRASSROOTS POLITICKING" - HON. BEN IGBAKPA

By: Team Igbakpa

There is not a day that goes by without Hon. Igbakpa recreating a lively mood and erasing gross sentiments about his intentions. This was the same on Sunday 25th November 2018 as he paid homage to the "Action Women" social club in Oria-Abriaka, Ethiope East Local Government Area.

As the acclaim of Hon. Igbakpa's simplicity and uprightness spread across Delta state and beyond, he is constantly popularising himself with the people with the manner he continuously associates with the local people and also pleasing them with his articulated messages of progress and expectant delivery.

On this occasion, Igbakpa questioned the pretentious behaviours of some politicians and condemned their usual patterns of intended flattering when he opined, "they say all politics is local but how many politicians truly exemplify this political statement? There is still a degree of phony disconnect between many politicians and their constituents. There is still an apparent disharmony between what many politicians promise and their actual performance"

After listening to the supplications of the women, Igbakpa pledged to be very close to his people and consult with them regularly in respect of their appeals. He said, "I have always been an adherent of grassroots politicking. I totally believe it is the best way to create an expansive political impression for better delivery, and I have always practiced it."

"I have said it many times and for firm emphasis, I reiterate that I will not represent you at the National Assembly in isolation. I am your messenger. Whatever we resolve to do together, I will do. I will not treat our integrated consultative deliberations with contempt."

The women in enthusiastic fashion, unequivocally sang victory songs for Hon. Ben Igbakpa and gave their clean-cut endorsement. Hon. Ben Igbakpa is indeed the man of the moment.
