Render service to humanity in God's name, Okowa admonishes Nigerians Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta has urged Nigerians to render service to humanity as a reflection of God's wish for His children. He made the call on Saturday at the wedding between Mr Daniel Omoghene and Miss Esther Ofou at Church of God Mission international, Asaba. According to the governor, service to the people should be rendered selflessly and such service will never go unnoticed and it will be rewarded. "When you work, when you render service, do it with all your heart; render service wherever you find yourself as if you are doing it for God. "Do not engage in eye-service, because when you work hard, you will get your reward. "Recall that among those in 'Our Mata' group, someone was moved from Special Assistant to Commissioner position in this state; it shows that selfless service will not go unnoticed," he said. He advised the couple to allow Jesus to preside over their home all the time "and everything will work according to His will." He said "My wife and I are already 33 years in marriage by God's grace and I believe we have a lot of experience to share. "Learn to read the Bible, study His words together; trust God at all times to provide for your family. "Allow Jesus Christ and the word of God into your family because once you accept Jesus, everything works for good; we should know Christ and allow Him to reside in our homes and with Him, He will provide for us. "I am convinced that this marriage will work." Okowa thanked the parents of the couple and the church for ensuring that the wedding was a success. Earlier, in a sermon, Rev. Eric Nwachukwu, urged the couple to always share things together, avoid keeping secrets and not to also allow outside interference in their family.

Odutemu's elevation to Archbishop, well-deserved - Okowa Delta Governor, Sen. (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa, has congratulated Rt. Rev. Cyril Odutemu on his election as the Archbishop of Bendel Province of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion. Okowa said that Odutemu's elevation was well-deserved given his antecedents as a firebrand preacher and outstanding administrator. In a congratulatory message by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Olisa Ifeajika, on Monday in Asaba, the governor said that the people of Ughelli Diocese, Deltans and Nigerians were proud of his elevation as Archbishop of Bendel province. Okowa And The Essence Of Religious Pilgrimage To Israel (II) By FIDELIS EGUGBO "When the sun went down, the people brought their sick friends to Jesus. They had many different kinds of sicknesses. Jesus laid his hands on each sick person and healed them all." Luke 4:38-40 We were at the Synagogue which was not far from Simon Peter's house. Capharnaun can be described as a city that is currently solely inhabited by Monks who keeps the ruins of the old city. Just few days of leaving our beloved country, Nigeria, many people were longing to be back, so, it was a surprise to hear gospel songs of Nigerian origin blaring from loud speakers in a boat we entered in the Sea of Galilee. We sang along and danced as the boat cruised. Though it did not last more than 30 minutes, from the spontaneous reaction, it was evident that North or South, there is no place like home. Though, it was on this Sea that Jesus walked (levitated) on water, none of us dared to test if we had faith that was as little as the mustard seed, despite the fact that most of us had bought mustard seeds and seen how tiny they were. There is no way one will fail to recall the visit to Jordan River where Jesus was baptised. The environment was not different from what we have back home with trees and birds. Of course, who would skip the opportunity of splashing the water from the river on his or her body? We were in Tabgha where "Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse. His disciples answered, “Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?” “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.” He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people. They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 38 The number of those who ate was four thousand men, besides women and children. After Jesus had sent the crowd away, he got into the boat and went to the vicinity of Magadan." Mathew 15: 32-39 We visited a lot of holy sites, including where Jesus turned water into wine at Cana in Galilee, birth place of Virgin Mary, place Joseph lived with Mary and Jesus; place where the Pool of Bethsaida was - it has dried up; the Wailing Wall which was said to be the closest place to where the Ark of the Convenant was kept, among several others. We met pilgrims from Lagos, Imo, Enugu and Akwa Ibom States and we all gathered at Ramada Hotel, Jerusalem to pray for Nigeria. Israel certainly is not as endowed with resources as Delta alone, but seeing the achievements they have recorded in all spheres, that prayer became very necessary as we were asking where we got it wrong as a nation. We called on God that assisted the people of Israel to intervene in the affairs of Nigeria and Delta in particular. While in Israel, a colleague put a poser, does the trip worth the cost? Every minute, people from different parts of the world visit sites in Israel; it was just like the saying, "I tell you," he replied, "if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out," Luke 19: 40 in action. In short, Jesus is doing more in Israel now than in the past. You just have to tune yourself to nature to feel the aura in certain places and more people are eager to visit. We never doubted His existence before the pilgrimage but, most of us were so enlightened about the activities that took place in the Old Testament during the visit. Again, one may feel that all that Jesus did were in an area not bigger than Delta North Senatorial District. Apart from the rich spiritual exercise, there were other lessons learnt; the fact that once you turn 18 years, you must join their military gave room for mutual respect as everyone that is more than 18 years old is experienced in handling weapons and trained on self defence and above all, their loyalty to the state of Israel can never be in dispute bearing in mind that they are surrounded by perceived and real enemies. We were at the Dead Sea described as the lowest point on earth (423 meters below sea level). The Dead Sea alone has its numerous visitors daily as it is reputed for a lot of things, including healing. While commending the Governor of Delta State, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa for encouraging Deltans to deepen their belief in God through pilgrimage, my humble wish is for the number of persons that goes on pilgrimage be increased; the Federal Government and well-to-do individuals, including religious organisations should be involved in such sponsorship because, the exposure yields positive results in different ways. One cannot forget the roles played by the Commissioner, Bureau for Special Duties, Mr Mofe Pirah, Chaplain, the Ugoani of Okpanam, HRM Michael Mbanefo; Chaplain, Government House Chaplaincy, Venerable Charles Osemenem, Hon. Aneke Ifemeni, Mrs Joy Obiosa, Comrade Pere Botu and several others to make the pilgrimage really eventful. Like the journey of the Magi, moving to the sites could be difficult but if you recall that Jesus climbed those mountains wearing only sandals or on bare foot and you are making use of Cable Cars and in other comforts, a lot of things will certainly go through your mind. There are still areas I will like to explore, questions I will like to ask if I have the opportunity to visit Israel again because, there are still so many secrets to unravel, so many mysteries to pray about and there is still much more on my mind, especially the fact that I almost forgot that two persons bagged political appointments while the pilgrimage was still on. (As published on page 10 of The Pointer Newspaper of today, Sunday, January 5, 2020. The first part of this material was published last Sunday. Thanks.)

Okowa’s Upgrade Of Asaba Airport Attracts More Airlines BY PATRICK MGBODO The recent inclusion of Azman Air to the growing fleet of airline operators at the Asaba International Airport has reinvigorated the confidence of air-travellers and the prospects of economic development in Delta State. Credible sources also revealed to The Pointer that Arik Air will resume operations as Overland airline is expected to continue in February 2020 following the upgrade of the airport by the Governor IfeanyiOkowa administration. For the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, the decision of more airlines to operate in Asaba was a testimony that the investment of the state government in the airport is yielding fruits. Likewise, the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Interparty Relations, Comrade David Ashikodi, underscored the commitment of the Okowa administration to developing the aviation sector. For him, Governor Okowa has etched his name in gold as he has not played undue politics in upgrading the airport to international standards, adding that the arrival of Azman Air was a welcome development. Explaining the economic consequences of more airlines in the airport, the project director of Asaba International Airport, Mr. Austin Ayemidejo, pointed out the multiplier benefits to the hospitality and road transport industries in the state capital. ‘’Once you have an increase in the volume of traffic to a city, it means a lot because the hospitality business will benefit tremendously from it, it means that cab operators will also enjoy great patronage from the passengers. ‘’Daily, we record about 700 passengers now and with Azman Air coming in, we may record up to 1000 on the average every day. The safest mode of transportation is by air and so people find it more convenient to use and it means a lot to the economic development of Delta State’’ he said

Okowa Calls For More Commitment To Sports Development Delta Governor, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa has said that in spite of the huge investment in sports development, a lot is still needed to be done to take it to the desired level. He made the statement on Monday while speaking at the finals of the 9th edition of Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa Football Tournament at the Agbor Township Stadium. According to him, more well-to-do Nigerians and corporate organisations should be involved in the sponsorship of sporting activities, especially, football, observing that there was over reliance on government sponsorship. "Today, we watched a beautiful game of football; the organisers of the championship have made it clear that it was to unite the people, keep the youths busy and discover hidden talents. "We are aware of the inherent benefits derivable in the development of sports; though there is a lot of investments in sports, a lot more is needed to be done to take it, especially, the game of football to the desired heights. "We need a lot sponsorship; there are so much dependence on government for sponsorship; governments at different levels are doing their best but it is not enough; we need to strengthen our league because, it will amount to act of patriotism for us to watch Nigerian league and be involved in sponsorship. "The league is supposed to be a money spinner; everyone has to be patriotic in contributing to sports development," Governor Okowa said. At the end of 90 minutes of play, Ute-Okpu Ward 9 football club piped Boji-Boji Ward 4 football team 2-0 to lift the trophy and win a cash prize of N1 million while a cash prize of N750, 000 went to the second position and the team that got 3rd position received the sum of N500, 000. STOP PRESS!!! *DSP OMO-AGEGE SUPPORTS CITING OF FUPRE POST-GRADUATE CAMPUS IN OREROKPE, NOT “OTORO-OROGUN”.* Our attention has been drawn to the text of a Bill purportedly sponsored by Rt. Hon. Efe Afe of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) who represents Okpe, Sapele and Uvwie Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. The copy of the supposed Bill now circulating on social media seeks to amend the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE) Act, 2017. We wish to and hereby respond to the supposed Bill as follows: 1. That the Deputy President of the Senate and Obarisi of Urhoboland, HE Senator Ovie Omo-Agege is not the author/sponsor of the said Bill and has no inputs whatsoever. 2. That the DSP’s Office seriously frowns at and totally rejects Clause 3 of the said Bill mandating the citing of the *“permanent site of the post graduate (sic) campus” of FUPRE in “Otoro-Orogun”,* instead of OREROKPE, which the DSP believes should host the post-graduate campus of the institution for being within the strategic circumference of the Main Campus. 3. That the DSP’s Office considers it as either a serious error of omission or commission by the drafter(s)/alleged sponsor of the Bill which must be urgently corrected or it is just an extreme mischief by people who are desperately struggling to taint the DSP’s good name at all cost. 4. That the DSP is preoccupied with a key element of his legislative agenda of bringing the Federal Polytechnic Orogun to Delta State for the benefit of all Deltans and Nigerians. His Excellency is not interested in anything that distracts from that noble pursuit or capable of igniting premeditated discord amongst our good people. The Obarisi of Urhoboland does not believe that Orogun alone should host both the Federal Polytechnic and the proposed post-graduate campus of FUPRE and would not support anything to the contrary in the Senate. 5. In the circumstances, we ask our people to discountenance the fake news and rumour that the DSP is somehow using the power of his high office to attract the post-graduate campus of FUPRE to “Otoro-Orogun” in addition to the Federal Polytechnic Orogun. That is totally false and mischievous. It is a futile attempt to set our people against themselves. It smacks of very foul politicking. We humbly advise our people not to fall for it at all. Thank you and God bless. SIGNED: Prince Henry Efe Duku Special Adviser to the DSP on Legislative & Plenary Matters. |
Flight Costs To Drop In Asaba ....As Azman Air Begins Operations BY PATRICK MGBODO The cost of air-travels at the Asaba International Airport is likely to drop following healthy competition among airline operators as Azman Air commenced operations on Sunday. Witnessing the maiden flight from Abuja to Asaba, which landed at exactly 4:25 pm, was the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Barr Chiedu Ebie, Commissioner for Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, and Senior Policy Adviser to Governor Okowa, Prof Sylvester Monye. Addressing newsmen, the SSG stated that with the presence of Azman and other expected airlines, there will be a healthy competition, which will make the cost of air-travel more affordable. Likewise, the Commissioner for Information stressed that the presence of more airlines jostling to take advantage of the airport was a testimony of the state government’s investment to boost the local economy. Accordingly, Prof Monye commended the management of Azman Air, even as he revealed that ‘’Arik Air will resume operations on Wednesday’’ to compete with Aero Contractors, Air Peace, and Overland Airways. “When I was going to Abuja on Friday, I paid N55, 000 but this flight (Azman) is about N23, 000 and so you can see the difference between having one airline and having many airlines doing the same route. It is a question of demand and supply and we expect the prices to come down massively’’ he said. For the Managing Director of Azman Air, Dr. Faisal Abdulmunaf, the air company sought the cooperation of Deltans as it hoped to conquer the South-South region, even as he appreciated the runway and other facilities at the airport. His words, ‘’this is indeed one of the best airports that I have seen in this part of the country and the state government has done very well. I am very impressed with what I have seen at the Asaba International Airport’’ he said. Explaining the economic consequences of more airlines in the airport, the Project Director of Asaba International Airport, Mr. Austin Ayemidejo, assured of stable flights throughout the week. ‘’Daily, we record about 700 passengers now and with Azman Air coming in, we may record up to 1000 on the average every day. That tells you how much the hospitality business will benefit. There will be a multiplier effect in Asaba and its environs’’ he said.

IGBAKPA VOICED OUT HIS EMPOWERMENT AND DEVELOPMENTAL SCHEME I am Ben Rollands Igbakpa. By the grace of God Almighty and by the mandate of the people of Ethiope West and Ethiope East, I represent Ethiope Federal Constituency in the Federal House of Representative. I started this journey of representation since 2016 ever since the people calls came to go and represent them in the green chamber. I also once again, thank my people for standing by me before, during and my post election period. I remembered vividly, the manifesto that I made during my campaign period, hence I started with a thank you visit from 17th of November till 1st of December round all the wards of Ethiope East and Ethiope West that made up the Federal Constituency which I represent in the National Assembly. For the fact that one cannot be talking about development based on infrastructure only, when humans are not developed, I have set human capital development as my major objective in this four years of service. This is because, I know that human capital development is the bedrock of socio-economic development. Hence, I promised empowerments that will be based on interest and desire of individuals, rather than forcing an empowerment which one cannot be resourceful with on individuals. With that, I have produced and distributed forms called, i-REP forms round all the wards of the Federal Constituency. Five(5) forms for each ward for the twenty two(22) wards of the Federal Constituency, which will make up a minimum of one hundred and ten(110) yearly in the Federal Constituency. The form gives you various options of skills, educational scholarship or any business of choice that you need empowerment to embark on. I have also asked the twenty two (22) wards in the Federal Constituency to also nominate two(2) persons each for monthly grant, that will take a period of one year. The twenty two wards of the Federal Constituency will bring a total of forty four(44) persons yearly for this grant. I remembered that I assumed office in the month of June, so the grant will start from six(6) months back till June 2020. The sum amount will be a token of one hundred and twenty thousand naira per individual to aid him or her in achieving one thing or the other. For the fact that infrastructures cannot be done without, I have also informed all the twenty two wards of the Federal Constituency to summit two(2) projects each, which will make a total of forty four (44) projects to be achieved for this four years of service. In my major objective of human capital development, I will be rotating it yearly. Both the people that will benefit from the i-REP forms and the grants, We are targeting to empower a minimum one hundred and fifty four(154) people yearly. So, the four years of this representation, will make a total minimum of six hundred and sixteen(616) people around the Federal Constituency. My objectives of empowerment will not make individuals of impressive needs not to access me when they need one assistance or the other. For I am open to all. You voted me, so, I am at your service. You can also communicate to me any idea that I am capable of handling, that will foster development to our constituency. For I am also and always ready to present any motion that will bring relief to our people. We have liaison offices that are opened and will be soon empowered in the two local government of the Federal Constituency. Once again, I thank you all for making me your representative in the National Assembly. ~Hon. Ben Rollands Igbakpa. Member representing Ethiope East and West federal constituency.

Okowa warns against disruption of oil production in Delta ON OCTOBER 22, 2019 Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta on Tuesday warned against an attempt by workers to disrupt oil production activities at the Shell Petroleum Development Company’s (SPDC) Forcados Export Terminal in Burutu Local Government Area of the state. The governor gave the warning at a meeting in Government House, Warri Annex after brokering peace between the management of WHASSAN, a catering firm and its workers following a conflict which disrupted oil production activities in the area. Okowa, represented by the Commissioner for Oil and Gas, Prince Emmanuel Amgbaduba, urged both parties to agree to terms that would ensure smooth operations of the company in Forcados terminal. He said that his administration would no longer condone further disruption of operations at the terminal by any aggrieved group or firm. He said that their continued rift had caused a dip in oil production in the country. The governor recalled that the dispute between WHASSAN and its employees over workers’ welfare had led to shutting down of activities at Nigeria’s major oil export terminal. He noted that the disagreement which started as a mere workers’ demand for their welfare entitlements later escalated to denying other workers within the terminal food and other catering services. Okowa, who was disturbed by the development, ordered that normal operations should resume at the terminal following an urgent meeting of stakeholders to resolve the rift. He directed the firm (WHASSAN) to promptly pay pensions and other entitlements of their workers or face the risk of termination of the contract. “Let me emphasise here that government is not happy with the incessant disruption of operations in the terminal on account of workers welfare. Okowa said. “The company must do everything possible to pay the workers their entitlements or risk termination of their contract. “The country largely depends on oil exports from the Forcados Terminal to earn revenue for the provision of infrastructure and other developmental needs for our people and we will no longer condone avoidable disruption in operations. “We need a peaceful environment for all firms operating in the state to help us generate the much-needed revenues for our development,” the governor said. Responding, Human Resources Manager of WHASSAN Martha Ikenga said the company was happy with government’s intervention on the matter. She reiterated the company’s preparedness to comply with the resolutions reached the meeting. The workers on their part pledged never to stop operations again over default of payment but channel such grievances to the government through the Ministry of Oil and Gas. In the meeting were the SPDC’s Community Interface Coordinator, Mr Jerry-Gaultney Udjo; Chairmen of Ogulagha, Obotobo I and II communities, the communities’ Youth Presidents and Chairmen and Secretaries of Community Trusts of the various communities. Others are the management of the catering company and the representatives of the aggrieved staff members. |

NIGERIA @ 59: Okowa Urges Nigerians To Rekindle Hope In The Nation GOVERNOR of Delta, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa, has urged Nigerians to rekindle hope in the nation as they celebrate its 59th Independence anniversary. He made the call on Tuesday at the celebration in Asaba. According to the governor, all over the world, countries are facing different challenges; we should therefore, face these challenges squarely and not allow them defeat us as a people. He said: “Let us rekindle our hope, redouble our fervent prayers and supplication to God to see us through the numerous trials and unite us more than ever before. "Our declarations should be positive both for leaders and the country; that way, we will have positive confirmation that the heavenly Father will grant our prayers. “I appeal to all Deltans and indeed, all Nigerians, to rekindle their faith in a united country and in the continuous protection of democracy as the only viable system of governance, which is already bringing sustainable development to our nation in spite of obvious challenges. "I wish to assure Deltans that government will not shirk its responsibilities to its citizens as we shall at all times, conscientiously pursue what is in the best interest of the State and according to the provisions of our Constitution. “At 59, if we are to make further progress and follow the speed of sustainable development across the globe as a united people, we need to check our emphasis on regional, ethnic and religious divides." Okowa called for concerted effort by all to foster growth and development in every part of the country. He said that Nigerians let us look at themselves and share a sense of belonging as members of one family. "Fifty-nine years in the life of any human being or entity is a remarkable point to acknowledge and take stock. "I, therefore, salute our past and present leaders whose foresight and sacrifice brought us the independence, which we are celebrating. "I also salute our people, especially Deltans, who over the years, made sacrifices to ensure that our country remains united and committed to the path of democracy. “As a government, we have maintained a steady focus on the economy of the State with a view to promoting prosperity and public- private-partnership in economic development. "The State government has expended considerable resources towards improving basic infrastructure notably roads, drainages, healthcare, electricity, schools, bridges, housing, urban renewal and portable water supply. "This administration is determined to sustain this trend. It is however, doubtful if government alone can do all. "Accordingly, this administration is exploring private sector participation in the overall development of the State. “So far, we have laid the foundation for a critical mass of skills for entrepreneurship and business development. " Over 20,000 persons benefited from our flagship Skills Training and Entrepreneurship Programme (STEP), Youth Agricultural Entrepreneurs Programme (YAGEP) and similar programmes undertaken by Ministries of Agriculture and Natural Resources; Commerce and Industry, Women Affairs, including Delta State Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency," the governor said. He appealled to beneficiaries of the schemes to avoid selling off the empowerment tools handed over to them by the government at the end of their trainings. According to him, such an act defeats the purpose of creating a group of determined SME operators who will turn the State’s and country’s economies around. "It is expected that the progress they make can and should be the envy of those who opt for white collar jobs.” The celebration featured match past by the military, paramilitary agencies, students and pupils of public and private schools.

To the bishop, he said "You are retiring but there is more to be done in the House of God, because God is allowing you to move into community service because there is lots of decay in family life. "Sometimes I wonder what we preach in the Church; we have so many churches now but things are still going under. "We go to church and we do not care for the kind of life our children are living. "I am truly very scared for our nation, going into the future but I am confident that with men like you there is hope for the future. "Forty-six years of experience on the pulpit is quite a lot and I congratulate you on your 70th birthday." Bishop Curtis Fiano in his sermon titled "The story behind the glory" urged Christians to always be grateful and thankful to God for what they have achieved if they were to get what they want in life. "Where you are today is somebody's prayer point, adding "if you don't thank God for where you are you will not get to where you are going The celebrant, Rev Udume said despite being a clergy man, he went into farming in his desire to help people and lift them out of poverty and called on highly placed Nigerians to use their privileged positions to uplift the down-trodden.

Project Nigeria in positive light, Okowa admonishes Nigerians Delta Governor, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa, has urged Nigerians to shun negative attitudes towards the country, but project it in positive light. He cautioned that citizens must resist the temptation, no matter how strong, to join those in the habit of continually condemning and speaking evil of the country and its leaders. The governor made the call on Wednesday in Asaba, at the Standing Committee Meeting of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) at St. Peter’s Cathedral Church of the Diocese of Asaba. He said “it is impossible for us to pray right and then speak wrong, because what happens after prayer is as important, if not more important, than the actual prayer. “Our words as Christians are powerful; negative words carry the power to invalidate our prayers and derail our expectations. ``So, let us all take heed and begin today to speak healing, peace, prosperity, progress and accelerated development to Nigeria. “My faith is that in no distant time, Nigeria will become one of the most sought-after countries in the world; it shall be well with us as we continue to stand in faith for Nigeria. “We need to also teach the flock to release their faith for the purpose of national development and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians. ``We are not often as determined and steadfast in exercising faith for a transformed Nigeria as we are when it comes to our personal needs.” He reaffirmed that Delta had been dedicated to God, saying ``our trust is in Him and, therefore, we cannot be put to shame”. Okowa commended the Anglican Communion for its steadfastness in preaching the word of God, noting that all over the world, the pulpit was under severe pressure. According to him, congregants, having itchy ears, are hardening their ears to the truth and looking for preachers who will tell them what they want to hear. In his message, the Primate of Anglican Communion, Most Revd Nicholas Okoh, thanked the governor for his support to the Church and called on the Federal Government to tackle the challenges of insecurity in the country. Speaking on “Fight The Good Fight Of Faith,” the Primate urged Christians not to be deterred in their efforts to win souls for Christ, urging them to shun greed, selfishness, ambition, division, sin, heretic doctrines, and the like.

Encourage girl-child on science education, Okowa urges parents Delta Governor, Sen. (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa, has advised parents and guardians to encourage the girl-child to study science-related courses in school. The governor gave the advice when he received members of Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) led by the National President, Mrs Felicia Agubata, in Asaba on Tuesday. He said that the girl-child should be motivated to study competitive courses, especially the sciences, explaining that with science-based courses, more job opportunities would be created in the country. The governor, who was presented with an award by APWEN for being an “Inspirational Leader in Job Creation, Education, and Infrastructure Development”, said “your advocacy for the girl-child is encouraging. ``There is the need to ensure that more girl-children embrace the sciences and the competitive side of study. “The more science-based courses we embrace, the more entrepreneurial skills that we can grow to check unemployment because unemployment makes it difficult to check insecurity.” He emphasized that at primary and secondary school levels children should be given good education to lay a solid foundation for their future endeavours, adding that the government had given attention to the recruitment of teachers. “In Delta, we recently carried out employment of teachers with 90 per cent of them in the sciences, because we are emphasizing merit in the employment to ensure that we lay solid foundation for our children at primary and secondary levels. “We are also doing a lot in technical education, because we believe that people can acquire skills in a secondary school system that is technologically-based. ``We have revamped six technical colleges and we promised to construct 19 more before the end of my tenure,” Okowa said. He commended APWEN for choosing Asaba for its meeting and urged the members for their commitment to create awareness for the girl-child in science education. Earlier, Agbubata had told the governor that they were in Delta for their meeting, disclosing that they were spurred to present the award to him based on the giant strides recorded by his administration in road construction, airport, education, job creation and others. She commended the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs Ebieri Otuaro, an engineer, for her commitment to the growth to engineering profession.
