The arrest of key Paris attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam is a welcome "victory" for Belgium but questions over the underlying problem of Islamist extremism remain, the Belgian press said Saturday.Abdeslam came from the gritty Molenbeek quarter of Brussels known for a number of Islamist activists and it was there that police finally tracked him down after four months on the run.
The authorities and the police in particular have faced sharp criticism as investigations since the November 13 Paris attacks seemed to get nowhwere, sparking charges Belgium was not up to the task of combating modern-day terrorism.....

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — North Korea's highest court sentenced an American tourist to 15 years in prison with hard labor on Wednesday for subversion.

He was charged with subversion under Article 60 of North Korea's criminal code. The court held that he had committed a crime "pursuant to the U.S. government's hostile policy toward (the North), in a bid to impair the unity of its people after entering it as a tourist."
North Korea regularly accuses Washington and Seoul of sending spies to overthrow its government to enable the U.S.-backed South Korean government to take control of the Korean Peninsula.....

One in three Syrian children have known nothing but a lifetime of war, UNICEF said Monday, as the country's conflict enters its sixth year this week.
Forced from their homes and schools, orphaned by violence and drafted into work or fighting, a generation of Syria's children is being shaped by the conflict, UNICEF said in a new report.
"Every Syrian child under the age of five has known nothing but a lifetime shaped by war -– that's an estimated 2.9 million children inside Syria and at least 811,000 in neighboring countries," the UN children's agency said.
yria's war has killed more than 270,000 people and, according to the United Nations, forced more than half of a pre-conflict population of 23 million from their homes.

An Indian student from the lowest Dalit caste was hacked to death and his wife critically injured in southern India in a suspected "honour killing" by relatives angered by their marriage, police said Monday.
Three men armed with sickles and sharp weapons attacked the 22-year-old student and his wife, who is from a higher caste, on a crowded street in Tamil Nadu state on Sunday.
Local police commissioner N Manjunatha said the 19-year-old woman's relatives were angered by the couple's marriage.

Moscow (AFP) - A nanny accused of decapitating a young girl in her care then walking through the street brandishing the head, on Wednesday said "Allah ordered" the killing as she appeared at a Moscow court.
Suspect Gyulchekhra Bobokulova from Muslim-majority Uzbekistan -- whom the press have dubbed "the bloody nanny" -- was detained on Monday as she was waving the child's severed head outside a metro station in northwestern Moscow. She was sent for psychiatric examinations.
"It was what Allah ordered," the 38-year-old told journalists as she was brought into the district court to have her arrest confirmed and extended.
With shoulder-length black hair parted in the centre, she wore a royal blue pinafore over a black tracksuit top.
At times, she smiled, other times she grimaced, flashing a few golden teeth.
