Politics › Obi Hails Soludo's Fourth-tier Govt Plan As Game-changer For Anambra Communities by uchizzy4life(op): 1:52am On Sep 03
By Ndife David, Obosi.

The President General of Obosi Development Union Worldwide (ODU), Barr. Chimezie Obi, has thrown his weight behind Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s proposed legislation establishing Community Administrations and recognizing Town Unions as the fourth tier of government in Anambra State.

Obi, who is the legal adviser of the Anambra State Town Union Council (ASTUC), in a statement made available to journalists in Awka on Wednesday, described the initiative as a bold governance reform capable of taking development closer to the people and transforming the administration of communities across the state.

The ASTUC legal adviser said the proposal demonstrated a deliberate shift from a system in which governance was largely driven from Awka and local government headquarters to one that gives communities a structured role in identifying needs, setting priorities and participating directly in development.

He stressed that Town Unions had for decades remained indispensable to community development in Anambra, mobilizing citizens and resources for schools, healthcare, roads, infrastructure, peace, security and other projects, while also maintaining strong links with indigenes in Nigeria and the diaspora.

Obi, however, noted that the absence of a comprehensive statutory framework defining the powers and responsibilities of Town Unions had generated institutional challenges, describing the proposed legislation as an opportunity to establish clear, effective and accountable structures for community administration.

He said the framework should clearly distinguish the responsibilities of traditional institutions, particularly Ndi Igwe, from those of Town Union leaders headed by Presidents-General and their executives, stressing that both institutions were vital to the stability and progress of their communities.

According to him, traditional rulers remained custodians of culture, customs and heritage, while Town Unions served as major instruments of organized development and grassroots administration, adding that clearly defined and mutually respected roles would minimize conflicts and strengthen community leadership.

Obi further said the proposed Community Administration system could create stronger institutional links between Town Unions and Local Government Areas in development planning, project execution, data collection, security, monitoring and accountability.

He also identified opportunities for greater participation by women, youths and Anambra indigenes in the diaspora, saying a properly structured legal framework could unlock the enormous human and material resources within communities and empower residents to monitor projects, demand transparency and assess results.

Obi also affirmed Soludo’s initiative as a potentially historic reform rather than a mere administrative adjustment, maintaining that when communities are properly organized, empowered and integrated into governance, Anambra would become stronger, more responsive and better positioned for sustainable grassroots development.

Politics › Breaking: Anambra Declares War On Unsafe Buildings After Nnewi Collapse by uchizzy4life(op): 1:31am On Sep 01
By Ndife David, Nnewi.

The Anambra State Government has vowed to intensify enforcement against substandard construction following the collapse of a two-storey building at Umudim, Nnewi, which recorded no casualties.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development visited the site to assess the incident and determine the circumstances surrounding the building failure, amid concerns over compliance with approved construction standards.

The Commissioner warned that the government would no longer tolerate developers who compromise safety or cut corners, stressing that any construction capable of endangering lives and property would attract appropriate sanctions.

He insisted that approved building plans, construction standards and physical planning regulations must be strictly followed, noting that the consequences of defective construction could be catastrophic.

The Commissioner further directed developers, builders and property owners to secure all necessary approvals before commencing projects and ensure that qualified professionals are engaged throughout the construction process.

He said the ministry would strengthen monitoring, inspection and enforcement across the state to ensure that ongoing and proposed developments conform to prescribed standards and regulations.

‎Anambra's Bold Urban Renewal Drive Restores Market Order, Dismantles Illegal Structures, Strengthens Investor Confidence
‎

‎By Ndife David, Onitsha.
‎
‎The Anambra State Government has intensified its urban renewal campaign with a decisive enforcement exercise that dismantled illegal structures at Onitsha Main Market and other strategic locations across the state, reaffirming its unwavering commitment to restoring order, protecting public infrastructure, enhancing the ease of doing business and creating an environment that inspires investor confidence.
‎
‎The enforcement operation followed the expiration of repeated statutory notices served on traders, roadside operators and occupants of unauthorized developments that obstructed market entrances, encroached on road setbacks and violated the state's physical planning regulations. Officials of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, supported by security personnel, carried out the exercise peacefully to ensure compliance while maintaining public order.
‎
‎Leading the operation at Onitsha Main Market, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Chijioke Ojukwu, explained that the government had exhausted every lawful and humane approach before resorting to demolition.
‎
‎He noted that affected occupants were repeatedly notified through official letters, public announcements and town criers, giving them ample opportunity to voluntarily remove their goods and structures in line with existing planning regulations.
‎
‎Ojukwu stressed that the exercise was not intended to punish traders or disrupt legitimate commercial activities but to reclaim public spaces that had been illegally occupied over time.
‎
‎According to him, illegal structures had significantly narrowed access roads, obstructed free movement within the market and created avoidable safety risks for traders, customers and emergency responders, making government intervention both necessary and unavoidable.
‎
‎The Commissioner further reaffirmed that Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo's administration remains committed to building livable, orderly and economically competitive cities where businesses can thrive without the burden of congestion, environmental degradation and unlawful developments.
‎
‎He urged residents, developers and traders to respect approved planning standards, obtain all necessary statutory approvals and partner with government in sustaining a clean, organized and investment-friendly Anambra.
‎
‎At the commercial hub, illegal lock-up shops and roadside structures along New Market Road were dismantled to decongest major traffic corridors, improve accessibility into the market and provide a safer, cleaner and more organized trading environment.
‎
‎Similar enforcement actions were also carried out at Nkwelle Ezunaka in Oyi Local Government Area and the government-owned Trans Nkisi Phase Two Layout in Onitsha North, where illegal buildings, fences and other unauthorized developments erected without valid allocation documents were removed in accordance with the state's development control laws.
‎
‎Speaking on the exercise, the Head of Development Control, Mrs. Ngozi Okwudili, disclosed that investigations revealed that land grabbers had unlawfully taken possession of portions of the government-owned Trans Nkisi Phase Two Layout, displaced genuine allottees and commenced construction without approval.
‎
‎She said the enforcement became necessary to recover government property, protect legitimate landowners and preserve the integrity of the state's physical development framework.
‎
‎President-General of the Anambra State Amalgamated Traders Association (AMATA), Chief Humphrey Anuna, commended the state government for taking what he described as a courageous and timely decision to restore sanity to the state's largest commercial market.
‎
‎He observed that the proliferation of illegal roadside structures had for years hindered free movement, reduced accessibility and negatively affected the overall trading experience for both traders and customers.
‎
‎Anuna further expressed confidence that the exercise would significantly improve commercial activities by opening up access roads, reducing congestion and creating a more conducive business environment capable of attracting more customers and investors.
‎
‎He assured the government of the continued cooperation of the trading community in supporting initiatives aimed at promoting orderliness, safety and sustainable market development.
‎
‎The Anambra State Government reiterated that its enforcement campaign against illegal developments, encroachment on public spaces and land grabbing would continue across the state without compromise.
‎
‎It advised prospective landowners and developers to verify land titles, secure statutory approvals and strictly comply with physical planning regulations, assuring residents, traders and investors that the ongoing urban renewal programme is designed to build a safer, more orderly and economically vibrant Anambra where legitimate businesses and investments can flourish sustainably.

Politics › Obi Backs Anyaoku’s Regional Government Campaign, Urges Immediate Constitutional by uchizzy4life(op): 4:06pm On Jul 26
‎Breaking: Obi Backs Anyaoku’s Regional Government Campaign, Urges Immediate Constitutional Reforms.
‎
‎
‎By Ndife David, Obosi.
‎
‎The President-General of Obosi Development Union, ODU Worldwide, Barr. Chimezie Obi, has thrown his weight behind the long-standing call by former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, for Nigeria to return to a regional system of government, describing the proposal as the most practical pathway to national stability, economic recovery and true federalism.
‎
‎Fielding questions from news men in Obosi on Saturday, Obi said Anyaoku's consistent advocacy over the past 14 years reflects a deep commitment to Nigeria's unity and progress, noting that the country's prevailing security, economic and governance challenges underscore the urgency of comprehensive constitutional restructuring.
‎
‎According to him, the existing structure of 36 states and a highly centralised federal system has become financially unsustainable, with enormous public resources expended on governance rather than infrastructure, education, healthcare and productive development.
‎
‎He maintained that Anyaoku's proposal for six federating regions, based on the existing geopolitical zones, would reduce the cost of governance, strengthen accountability and encourage healthy competition among the constituent regions.
‎
‎Obi recalled that Nigeria's regional arrangement before 1966 stimulated remarkable progress in agriculture, education, commerce and industrialisation, arguing that a return to that model would restore innovation, productivity and, resource management and balanced national development.
‎
‎He further stated that devolving greater constitutional powers to the regions would enhance security, resource management and service delivery by bringing governance closer to the people and addressing local realities more effectively.
‎
‎The Obosi Development Union leader stressed that the present constitutional framework concentrates excessive powers at the centre, contrary to the principles of true federalism, and called for reforms that would strengthen the autonomy and responsibilities of the federating units.
‎
‎He identified constitutional amendment through the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly as a practical route to achieving regional governance, while also supporting broader national consultations aimed at producing enduring constitutional reforms.
‎
‎Obi urged traditional institutions, town unions, professional bodies and civil society organisations to mobilise public support for restructuring through sustained advocacy, civic education and constructive engagement with policymakers.
‎
‎He emphasised that regionalism should not be misconstrued as a call for disunity or secession but recognised as a constitutional framework capable of promoting efficient governance.
‎
‎Commending Anyaoku's unwavering position since 2012, Obi described the elder statesman as one of Nigeria's foremost voices on constitutional reform, whose advocacy has remained focused on preserving national unity through a stronger and more balanced federation.
‎
‎He called on the President, the National Assembly and other critical stakeholders to commence an inclusive process of constitutional reforms, expressing confidence that embracing regional government would reposition Nigeria for lasting peace, sustainable development and shared prosperity.

By Ndife David, Awka.

In a decisive operation against human trafficking and medical malpractice, the Anambra State Government has dismantled a notorious baby factory syndicate masquerading as a hospital in Umunya, Oyi Local Government Area.

The illegal facility, operating under the name Mother and Child Hospital and Maternity, was located at No. 1 School Road, near Tansian University.

Acting on months of surveillance and intelligence gathering, the state government working in close collaboration with security agencies stormed the premises with officials of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA Brigade) and arrested key members of the criminal network.

The so-called hospital was found to be operating with a falsified license and was owned by a self-proclaimed medical doctor, Mr. Odili Ossai, a native of Delta State. Authorities have confirmed that the syndicate was involved in the trafficking and exploitation of young girls, aged 15, 19, and 21. Many of the victims were reportedly held against their will and forced into pregnancies, with newborns sold into illegal adoption rings.

Several teenage girls and infants were rescued during the raid and are now receiving comprehensive medical care and psychological support.

Addressing the press, Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, described the crackdown as “a significant victory in the ongoing battle against child trafficking, human rights violations, and gender-based abuse.” He emphasized the state’s unwavering commitment to shutting down all illegal medical establishments and safeguarding public health.

“This operation underscores the importance of collaboration between security agencies and health regulators,” Dr. Obidike said. “We are determined to rid Anambra State of fake medical practitioners and criminal networks that exploit the vulnerable.”

Dr. Obidike also highlighted the role of the State Health Facility Accreditation and Monitoring Unit (SHFAMU) and the State Illegal and Anti-Quackery Taskforce Team, established to identify and eliminate unauthorized health facilities across Anambra.

He urged the public to support the government’s efforts by reporting suspicious activities related to healthcare practices. Residents are encouraged to use the following dedicated hotlines:

📞 0805 765 5442
📞 0913 516 9905
📞 0701 319 7263

Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation, and suspects are expected to face charges including human trafficking, unlawful detention, and child exploitation.

Dr. Obidike issued a stern warning to operators of unlicensed and quack facilities in the state: “Shut down now or face the full weight of the law. We will not compromise the safety and dignity of our people.”

The Acting Director, Medical Services, Dr. Ugochukwu Chukwulobelu amongst other State Health Ministry team members joined the Commissioner for the raid.
