Politics / BOWFT 2023: Edo First Lady, Other Governors’ Wives Make Case For Girl-child, R by UdabaPrince100: 9:26pm On Oct 31, 2023
BOWFT 2023: Edo First Lady, other governors’ wives make case for girl-child, recommits to combating gender-based violence

The Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki and other members of the Nigeria Governors’ Wives Forum (NGWF) have made the case for the grooming and empowerment of the girl-child, restating their commitment to ending the scourge of gender-based violence (GBV) in the country.

Mrs. Obaseki who spoke during her welcome address at a seminar held as a sideline event for the third edition of the Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament (BOWFT) on Tuesday, in Benin City, said the Edo State Government has over the past seven years prioritized policies to protect the girl-child and ensure their wellbeing.

She noted, “This is the third year of this tournament as we set out from the beginning not only to play football but to fight and address social vices that affect women and girls. We address issues that are prevalent in society.”

According to her, “The issue around GBV is a fight for all of us as the governors’ wives. We came together to fight and will continue to fight until there is zero tolerance for this issue in Nigeria.

“During our first outing, we got recognition from FIFA as they gave us an award for the initiative and for using the platform to empower our girls. We are trying year after year to maintain the height of professionalism and maintain world-class standards to get more FIFA recognition.

“BOWFT has been referred to as the foremost women's football tournament in Africa and we are proud. We aim to make Nigeria women's football known around the world. This year, the theme is ‘Stop Gender-Based Violence,’ and this is a focus of Nigeria Governors’ Wives Forum, as this issue is taken seriously.”

She added, “A lot of GBV happens in schools, communities and other places and children are afraid to speak out but we are enlightening them on the Violence Against Persons (VAP) Law, encouraging them to speak up, make them bold to join us in this fight, ensuring that we fight the scourge and reduce it to the barest minimum or completely eradicating it.”

The Chairman, Board of Trustees, NGWF and wife of former Ekiti State Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, commended Mrs. Betsy Obaseki’s efforts in the fight against gender-based violence, noting that the efforts by the governors’ wives have continued to yield positive results.

She stated, “The issues of gender-based violence are important to us as members of the NGWF and we set up a support group in 2020 to fight against gender-based violence and 13 States bought into it and passed the VAP Law. As of today, 35 States in Nigeria have already passed the VAP law, addressing GBV as Kano State is the only State yet to pass the VAP law.

“We would encourage Betsy Obaseki to continue her good fight against GBV. GBV is a fight for all of us in our schools, churches, and workplaces as we have dedicated our lives to the fight against the scourge and ensure it is no more in the country.”

The United Nations (UN) Women’s Country Representative to Nigeria, Ms. Beatrice Eyong, said, “We also commend the NGWF and the NGF as their efforts have seen to the declaration of war against gender-based violence in Nigeria where 35 States as of today, have passed the VAP law. We need alliances to fight this scourge.”

The Edo State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi commended the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration for the passage of the VAP law which has led to over 50 convictions while 200 more are undergoing persecution across the State.

He noted, “GBV should not be tolerated in the country and as a State, the Ministry of Justice is pursuing several GBV cases. Victims in Edo State are getting justice as a dedicated court has been set aside to hear GBV-related cases. Perpetrators in the State would not go unpunished as many are being prosecuted for their wrongdoing. We all need cooperation to ensure we fight the scourge to a standstill.”

Business / Two Edo Refineries To Boost Nigeria’s 1.5 Million Bpd Refining Capacity By 2025, by UdabaPrince100: 7:52pm On Oct 29, 2023
Two Edo refineries to boost Nigeria’s 1.5 million bpd refining capacity by 2025, says Wabote

The Executive Secretary, Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), Simbi Wabote, has said that the two refineries in Edo State, the Edo Refinery and Duport Midstream Refinery, which are currently refining petrochemical products, are well positioned to contribute to Nigeria’s 1.5 million barrels per day refining capacity by 2025.

Wabote disclosed this while delivering a keynote address at the third Biennial International Conference on Hydrocarbon Science and Technology, organised by the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) in Abuja, with the theme, "The Future of the Oil and Gas Industry: Opportunities, Challenges, and Development.”

The two refineries in Edo State have placed a combined order of 300,000 barrels of crude from the Oza oil field and currently produce diesel, naphtha and Lour Pour Fuel Oil (LPFO).

While the Edo Refinery and Petrochemical Company (ERPC) runs the 6000bpd plant in Ologbo, Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area, Duport Midstream Company Limited (DMCL) operates the Duport Refinery, which is part of an integrated energy park, located in Egbokor, Orhionmwon Local Government Area of the State.

The Edo Refinery was midwifed through a N700m investment by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led government in 2019, and is already being expanded into a 12,000bpd facility.

Wabote’s NCDMB has stakes in the Duport Refinery and is committed to the expansion of the facility.

According to Wabote, “If all plans go well, Nigeria would meet the target of 1.5 million bpd by 2025 through the various refining investments such as the 650,000 barrels per day Dangote refinery and the Bua Group refinery project.

He also listed the Waltersmith modular refinery, Duport Midstream refinery, OPAC Refinery, Edo Refinery, Aradel Holdings refinery as well as the existing 445,000 barrels per day capacity from the Kaduna, Warri, and Port Harcourt refineries as some of the projects that would help Nigeria hit the 1.5 million bpd refining target.

“The realisation of these projects would culminate in Nigeria achieving a combined refining capacity of approximately 1.5 million barrels per day by 2025,” he added.

Edo trains another batch of over 1,500 vigilantes, hunters to curb crime, criminality

…over 3,574 operatives trained in first three phases of training programme

The Edo State Government has commenced a 10-day intensive training for over 1,500 operatives of the Edo State Security Vigilante Network (ESSVN) as part of efforts to beef up the State’s security architecture and bolster efforts at combating crime in the State.

The training is the third batch of over 1,500 men and women cut across the three senatorial districts of the State to be trained on weapons handling and intelligence gathering, among others.

Speaking to journalists at the Police Training School in Ogida Barracks, the Coordinator of ESSVN, Col. Kole Omomia (rtd) said over 3,574 operatives of the security network have so far been trained in the first three phases of the training programme.

According to him, 574 ESSVN and hunters were trained during the first batch from Edo North and 1,500 persons were trained from two senatorial districts, Edo South and Central during the second batch.

Noting that another batch of 1500 operatives is being trained in the third phase of the training programme, Omomia said, “It's a 10 days intensive training. We are making sure that our operatives are well-trained and equipped to improve our security architecture in the State.

“The training is as directed by the Governor of Edo State to ensure a peaceful and secure State. A lot of activities will take place as profiling will be carried out on all trainees. We will adequately document them to ensure they are from Edo State and they will go through medical tests to ensure that they are fit for the training.”

He further noted, “The level of synergy between our sister agencies has been very cordial. We have good working relationships with the Army, Air Force, Police, Immigration, DSS, NDLEA and others. We had no issue with any of them as we work in peace and collaborate to ensure that the State is safe for all.

“We are working with other security agencies to boost the morale of our men as we have our core values in ESSVN which is discipline, loyalty, integrity and selfless service. This is a community-based security architecture. They have been selected from their various local governments and the various Chairmen have input before the list was sent to us.

“All the trainees will go through medical fitness and anyone that fails to pass the medicals will be edged out as there is no age limit. Our men must be fit and able to help collaborate with other sister security agencies to reduce crime to the barest minimum, ensuring that the State is safe for all.

The coordinator added, “We have the intelligent unit of ESSVN that ensures information and intelligence gathering to boost the performance of our men. We arrest, profile, and feed on information from the profiling to write our report before handing over criminals to the police.

“We will continue to train them as there are more batches of training programmes to come. The Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has done well in terms of security and this has made the State a destination for investors.”

Nigeria ‘ll be in deeper trouble if we don’t cut waste, Obaseki warns

…urges digitalisation of govt processes to reduce cost, ensure transparency

…reels gains of e-governance system in Edo

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has raised the alarm over the high rate of wastage in government, especially at the federal level, warning that the country will be in deeper trouble unless the nation takes deliberate steps to cut down waste.

This is as the governor reeled out the gains of his administration’s e-governance system, calling for the digitalisation of government processes across all levels of government in the country, in order to ensure transparency and reduce cost.

Obaseki spoke as a panelist during a plenary on “Reinventing Government: Digitalisation of Public Institutions,” at the 29th Nigerian Economic Summit, in Abuja.

The governor said, “We need to reinvent governance. You can't reinvent government unless you digitalise and open up your systems. We have no option. We have to be efficient.

“We have to be efficient to support production. Especially at the federal government level; the waste is too much and unless we change, we will be in trouble. In fact, we are already in trouble and if we don't change, we will be in deeper trouble.”

Obaseki, while sharing his Edo State e-governance experience at the event, said digitalisation of government required the political will and commitment of the political leaders because of resistance from civil servants.

He noted that sometimes even when the political leader has a well-thought-out and noble policy, getting civil servants to implement same was a challenge and in his case, he had to insist.

The governor stated that until the digitalisation exercise in Edo State, civil servants, public office holders, and the executive operated in silos, adding that the story has now changed.

The Obaseki-led state government, over the past seven years, has pursued bold and transformative reforms to digitise work processes in the civil and public service, transiting service delivery from an archaic, analog, and strenuous mode to a digitised, seamless, and efficient mode.

All files are now processed through the service-wide e-government platform, ensuring quick turnaround time. Today, the State is the most digitally connected in Nigeria and operates the most digitised civil and public service, with all local governments connected to fibre optics.

Edo State is also the first in the country to have entirely shifted to a digital mode of administration.

Edo govt has renovated over 336 primary schools, built 200 blocks of classrooms, others in last ten months

The Edo State Government has said it has renovated over 336 primary and junior secondary schools in the State, built over 200 blocks of classrooms, and renovated 202 others in the last ten months, while several others have been penciled down for remodeling.

The Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, who disclosed this while speaking to journalists in Benin City, reiterated the government’s commitment to remodeling all primary and junior secondary schools across the three senatorial districts of the State, with priority on the welfare and wellbeing of the pupils and teachers under its State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

The Commissioner spoke in reference to a recent video on social media shot at a primary school in Ozalla Community in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of the State.

Noting that the government was undertaking the remodeling and upgrade of all schools in phases, Nehikhare added that the school in the said video was among those already penciled for renovation.

He debunked claims that the school was abandoned and the pupils and teachers left to their fate and made to learn in poor conditions and dilapidated buildings, restating the government’s commitment to the welfare of pupils and teachers in the State.

Giving a breakdown of the work done by SUBEB in the schools this year, between January and October, he said 336 schools have so far benefitted, with 200 blocks of classrooms built, 202 blocks of classrooms renovated and 8,750 pieces of furniture (three seaters) provided for the pupils, while 600 sets of furniture provided for the teachers in the State.

He added, “Also, 41 new water projects and 210 new toilets have been constructed for basic schools, fences spanning 16, 010 meters in 13 local councils across 27 schools completed while the total number of mud schools demolished is put at 19, consisting 14 blocks of classrooms and 15 toilet blocks.”

As Ighodalo unsettles the Edo political space (Part One)

Without a word spoken about the forthcoming governorship contest in 2024, one individual has more than most, unsettled the political stratosphere in Edo State. That man is Dr. Asue Ighodalo.

Various individuals have begun to organize phantom groups to make statements about Asue’s possible candidature, in clear display of jitters and fears that his entering the contest may cause a seismic shift.

This heightened tension over the man who from a distance appears quite innocuous has forced me into some research into his background and the following are my findings about the Nigerian lawyer from Ewohimi, Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo State.

Business / United Nations Ranks Edo As Best State In ICT, Digital Governance In Nigeria by UdabaPrince100: 5:04pm On Oct 13, 2023
United Nations ranks Edo as best State in ICT, digital governance in Nigeria

… ‘Obaseki a trailblazer in ICT, digital transformation’

The United Nations, in recognition of the e-governance reforms by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration, has ranked Edo as the best State in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and digital governance in Nigeria.

The State got the recognition at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Design Workshop held in Lagos, which had in attendance representatives from the 36 States of the country, including Commissioners and Managing Directors of State ICT agencies and parastatals, among others.

The Obaseki-led government has in the past seven years undertaken bold and transformative reforms in the State’s civil and public service, transitioning the service delivery from an archaic, analogue and strenuous mode of operations to a digitised, seamless and efficient mode.

The State is today the most connected digitally in Nigeria and operates the most digitised civil and public service, with all local governments connected to fibre optics. Edo is also the first State in the country to have entirely shifted to a digital mode of administration. Files are now processed through the service-wide e-government platform, ensuring quick turnaround time.

Responding to the honour at the well-attended event in Lagos, the Edo State Commissioner for Digital Economy, Science and Technology, Hon. Ogbeide Ifaluyi-Isibor, commended Obaseki for being a trailblazer in the ICT sector.

He noted, “I felt like a superstar at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) workshop as Honourable Commissioners from across the nation, Managing Directors of States’ ICT agencies gathered in Lagos to brainstorm about the levels of digital transformation in their States, challenges and possible solutions to the challenges.

“At this event, I really appreciated how far we have come in Edo State and why we are ranked number one in ICT and Digital Governance in Nigeria.

“We are about the only State that has gone paperless in our government processes. Some States are centuries behind on this. With our almost 80 percent e-government compliance in the civil and public service, we lead all other States.”

He further noted, “While many States are trying to negotiate with Galaxy Backbone, the Nation’s Data Center for web hosting and others, Edo State has a tier-3 State-of-the-art Data Center with over 1.5 petabyte data storage space with a 99.9 percent efficiency level.

“When I told my colleagues that our civil/public servants are the best paid in the country and have the best working environment, they were in awe. To be honest, I was a very proud Edo son and an extremely proud Commissioner for Digital Economy today.

“I had everyone asking me how we did it, asking about our EdoBEST programme, asking how we are able to pay N40,000 minimum wage, asking about our Edo Innovates hub, among others.”

The Commissioner added, “In the next few weeks, I will be hosting a lot of my colleagues in Benin. They want to come to see what magic we have done in the Digital Economy of our State.

“Special appreciation to my Governor, Godwin Obaseki, for being a trailblazer in the ICT sector. To be honest, I was prouder of him today than I've ever been. Kudos to you, boss!”

Benin Enterprise Park: Edo assures access to gas, power, others to attract investors

The Managing Director of the Benin Enterprise Park, Mr. Ikponmwonsa Edward Osayande, has said the state government is committed to providing access to gas, electricity, security and other amenities to anchor tenants at the park.

Osayande, who disclosed this in a chat with journalists in Benin City, said the park is located in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of the State and spans across five communities.

He stated that the total area of the park spans 997.71 hectares of land and is conceived as a multiple business enclave to fast-track the development and growth of the State’s economy.

Osayande said, “The mandate is to build an industrial park designed to boost the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the State, provide opportunities for training and employment, and enable efficient, effective, responsive and innovative utilisation of the natural and geographic endowments of Edo State.

“The location of the park is equidistant from all over the State, including Delta State, thus taking advantage of our geographical location for intra and interstate commerce.”

According to him, “As a government, we have now decided to provide the horizontal infrastructure such that businesses will now come in and set up. We are committed to providing access to electricity, water, security and gas. With that, we can have a situation where we now bring in small to medium-scale businesses. They can come in and take parcels of land. That part of the policy is being developed.”

Noting that the park is ready to receive investors, he said: “The idea is to get them in as quickly as possible. We have two major anchor tenants coming in already that we’re working with right now. So, we're trying to get it from greenfield to brownfield as quickly as possible.”

The Managing Director added, “They are the ones that will sell Edo State once they come in after they have gone through the experience of trying to set up. So, when they come in, they will be the ones to do the marketing because they want everybody to know that this is where we are located now, in conjunction with the State.”

...says ‘Edo no longer safe for child abusers’

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that proactive reforms and legislation have been implemented in Edo State to ensure that the girl-child is safe and protected in the State.

The governor said this in commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child, marked by the United Nations and its sister agencies.

According to him, “As we mark this day, it is pertinent to underscore the progress made in protecting the girl-child in Edo State and ensuring that relevant laws and policy measures are enacted to ensure that the State is safe for our children and other vulnerable persons.

“The theme for this year’s event, ‘Invest in Girls’ rights: Our leadership and wellbeing,’ is apt as the State has continued to invest in the rights of the girl-child, ensuring that all necessary support systems are available for them to reach their full potential.

“We have domesticated the Violence Against Persons Law; established the Gender-Based Violence Referral Centre at the Daisy Danjuma Centre in GRA, Benin City; established the Gender-Based Violence Management Committee and opened the State’s Sex Offenders Register, all in an effort to ensure that the girl-child is protected and safe.”

Obaseki further noted, “As part of the EdoBEST programme, we have also ensured that the girl-child is protected from abuse through a proactive reporting system. With this system, children who are exposed to abuse can find a safe space and report such instances to the right authorities.

“Several cases of abuse are at different stages of litigation in the law courts and we have a robust support system to protect our children against abusers.”

The governor noted that with the structures already in place in Edo State, sex offenders would have to find a new haven because all apparatus of the law would be deployed to ensure justice for any victim of abuse.

On Obaseki’s 'controversial' legacy

By Crusoe Osagie

It is curious to see that a piece in a newspaper attempting to describe the legacies of the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki will almost entirely base their judgement on the failure of the Federal Government to fix their roads that transverse Edo State.

It is even more disturbing that the author never took the rigour and time to investigate the underbelly of the issue. The Federal Government has failed to allow anyone to fix these roads and is unable to do it themselves, leaving the roads in deplorable condition, forcing heavy-duty vehicles that traditionally used these federal roads for interstate transportation to now resort to state roads, which were not initially designed to handle such tonnage, placing an immense burden on the State roads.

Instead of thoroughly analyzing and addressing these facts so that the responsible parties can adjust adequately and deal with the issues, the author chose to scapegoat His Excellency, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, denigrating all infrastructural development efforts by the Governor over the past seven years that have continued to positively impact on the lives of the people.

Even though the author, in the 10-paragraph piece, agreed that the roads were owned by the Federal Government, he somehow believes that it is Governor Obaseki’s lot if the roads are not fixed. This is quite unfortunate.

There’s no gainsaying that the governor is sustaining efforts to overhaul the State’s road infrastructure, open up new towns and enhance access to rural areas, in line with his government’s urban renewal vision.

Obaseki, as an investment banker, understands the primacy of road infrastructure to economic development, which is why he has prioritized road construction and has continuously called on the federal government to undertake the repairs of their roads, part of the reason why they are entitled to over 52 percent of the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) receipts.

It is, however, unfortunate that the Federal Government has neither heeded the numerous calls to fix these roads nor allowed the State government to intervene, making them nearly impassable. The governor has however continued to move against the odds and has now begun efforts to carry out palliative work on a few of the federal roads like the Benin-Sapele Road, Benin-Agbor Road, among others.

As for the so-called challenge by the opposition party in the State to name roads that have been constructed since the governor came to power in 2016, which we have only come to know, ‘mysteriously,’ from this piece, let me provide a useful insight. It is on record that the state government under the leadership of Governor Obaseki has built over 1,500 roads, which stretch for about 2500km across the State’s three Senatorial Districts. Some of these roads include construction of Irhirhi-Aruogba-Obazagbon-Obagienevbosa-Ogheghe Road which spurs to Enogie Palace and Ogbekpen Community (Rubber Research); construction of Lucky Way, Benin City; Mission Road, Anegbette; Iyegbepue - Iyeremhe Road, Jattu; Irhue-Oke Uhiere Road off Benin-Ekpoma Road, Uhunmwode (Phase 1-4); Uwessan -Ujagbhole-Irrua, (Phase 1-6); Ugboshi- Afe Road, Off Igarra Ibillo Express Way; Benin-Abraka Expressway (Phase I), among others.

It is also necessary to state that the governor’s legacy extends beyond road infrastructure. His administration has in the past seven years embarked on bold and transformative reforms and projects, achieving milestones in various sectors of the State’s economy, including education, healthcare, job creation, industrialization and economic development, among others. These reforms and programmes have continued to translate to better livelihoods for the people and economic prosperity for the State, attracting national and global recognition.

From retooling the civil service to become more responsive and private-sector facing; to creating a new vista of economic opportunities with the Benin Port Project after breaking a 75-year-old jinx; to seeing to the development of two refinery projects in the State; to reforming the basic education sector; to providing electricity to power industries and government establishments; to unlocking the potentials of Edo youths in technology, building and cultivating the largest oil palm development in Africa, among others, Obaseki has written his name in gold in the annals of Edo’s history and his legacies cannot be erased.

In the terse write-up, the author also attempted to disparage the governor’s ingenious efforts at achieving a cleaner and greener State and ensuring environmental sustainability by encouraging parents to plant trees to mark their children's birth anniversaries.

One would wonder why someone will perceive such a noble effort as a distraction when in the real sense it is a proactive move towards securing a sustainable future for the State. It is important to emphasize that environmental sustainability is a fundamental aspect of governance, impacting on the health, livelihoods and quality of life of citizens and therefore efforts such as those by Governor Obaseki to promote environmental sustainability should receive praise and recognition by all and sundry.

Let me end this piece by reaffirming the undeniable: Governor Obaseki is a performer. He has in the past seven years journeyed an arduous path to reinvent Edo State which is visible in the big, bold projects that dot every nook and cranny of the State. His legacies cannot be blemished. Edo people know the truth and will continue to love and support their performing governor in his vision of placing the State on the path of sustainable and accelerated development.

She said the 2023 edition of the summit, with the theme, “The Edo Story: Creating Shared Opportunities into the Future,” will take place between Wednesday, November 8 and Sunday, November 12, 2023, in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

According to her, the event will also serve as a platform for investors, government officials, business leaders, and other key stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions, explore partnerships, and envision a prosperous future for Edo State.

Alufohai listed some of the activities to include; Edo Women Conference, Ancient City Tour, Cocktail, Summit, Muslim Prayer, Award Night/Dinner, Governor’s Golf Tournament, Food and Fun Fair, Youth Summit, and Thanksgiving Service.

She noted, “This year’s edition of the Alaghodaro Investment Summit promises to be a rollercoaster of excitement and discovery voyage, being the last summit that will be celebrated under the leadership of our performing Governor, His Excellency, Mr. Godwin Obaseki.

“With the theme ‘The Edo Story: Creating shared opportunities into the future,’ the summit will focus on the numerous achievements of the Obaseki-led government over the past seven years, highlighting how the government has harnessed strategic partnerships across various sectors to build a solid socio-economic base that is now positively impacting the lives of Edo people.”

Obaseki pledges to rebuild more local roads to connect communities, open more areas

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has promised to construct more interconnecting roads across the State to connect communities and open up more areas for economic activities and development.

The governor spoke while addressing stakeholders in Edo Central Senatorial District, decrying the poor state of federal roads across the State. This is as he reassured the people that his government will, after the rainy season, focus on the construction of more local roads to ameliorate the sufferings of the people, commuters and other residents in the State.

He said, “Anytime I want to come to Edo Central, I try to go through the roads that are very bad to see and feel what you are going through. I want to assure you that our biggest challenge as a State is our road infrastructure which is being challenged as we will not keep quiet for what is a blessing which has now turned into a curse.

“Edo is blessed because of its long stretch of interconnection of federal roads and I don't think that there is any State in the Country that has interconnected federal roads like Edo State.”

The governor further noted, “What we are seeing in the roads in Edo State today is an indication of what is happening with our Federal Government. It’s telling on us and shows that the Federal Government doesn’t seem to have the capacity to repair, maintain, and manage its own roads. So, our choice is to go back to our own local roads, create new ones, and see how to connect our State since they say they will not allow us to touch their roads.

“I appeal to you to be patient with us. It’s a matter of time. The dry season will be here soon and we will mobilise contractors to site, look for the money, and begin to construct our interconnecting roads in the State.”

Obaseki added, “We believe that what we are seeing is a signal to us that since the Federal Government has failed to repair Ekpoma, Irrua, Auchi, Benin roads, we must look for the roads we used to use before 1967 and 1973 and begin to rebuild those roads to connect our villages and communities.”

Edo regional, urban master plans to be legislated, incorporated into school curriculum, says Obaseki

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the State’s 30-year development plan, which consists of the Benin City Masterplan and the Edo Regional Development Plan, will be properly legislated and incorporated into school curriculum.

The governor said incorporating the plans into the school curriculum will give children in the State insight into what the plan contains and prepare them for their roles in the implementation of the development plan.

Obaseki, who spoke while addressing journalists in Benin City, the Edo State capital, said the plan will ensure a defined template for development and growth of the State.

He said the development plan is at its completion stage and will be ready by the third quarter of next year.

The governor noted, “As we design our master plan, we are going to be very resolute and undertake actions which might not be so popular but we need to because of the next generation.

“We will make sure that the master plan which we are almost concluding, as it is in its third stage now and hopefully will come alive by the third quarter of next year, contains pillars for our State development and growth.

“The master plan will be backed by law as we will legislate the master plan and when people do contrary to the master plan, they can be charged to Court.”

He added, “It will also be made compulsory by this administration as part of the learning process of students in our schools. It will be displayed, shown and taught in schools across the State for students to know what it looks like and have an idea of how their cities should look like, and have the ability to challenge their government or authorities in ensuring that the plans are maintained.”

Obaseki assures better support for judiciary, to build judges’ quarters in Auchi, Ubiaja, Ekpoma, others

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has assured of greater support for the judiciary, ensuring better environment, infrastructure, technology and other incentives to empower them to effectively and efficiently perform their duties.

Obaseki, who gave the assurance while briefing journalists in Benin City, the Edo State capital, said his administration plans to build safe and comfortable judges’ quarters with recreational facilities at Auchi, Ubiaja, Ekpoma, Sabongida-Ora and Afuze.

The governor while commending the judiciary for the role in maintaining law and order in the State, said his administration will continue to support the judiciary, providing them with the right environment for quick justice delivery.

He said, “We are concerned about housing our judges in safer quarters while you are in office, just as we are doing for the executive and other public servants.

“I am glad that we have been able to move some of you to the property at Aguobasimwin Judges accommodation. We are relocating the Civil Service Club from its current location to a better location.

“The space for the Civil Service Club, other adjoining properties behind the Club and other properties at Osadebey Avenue will give us 16,000 square meters of land where we will build ultra-modern judges quarters, with all the recreational facilities to enable us to accommodate more judges peacefully and safely.”

Obaseki further noted, “We expect to do the same in your out stations in Auchi, Ubiaja, Ekpoma, Sabongida-Ora, Afuze where you have Courts as we want to build safe and quality houses for Judges.

“As for housing provision after leaving office, we have set up a new agency, New Town Development Authority and moved from the traditional way of dealing with land issues to a more proper agency which takes up the landmarks and turns it into a city like the CORA City now being developed in Edo State.”

Edo to purchase new CNG-buses to boost free transport scheme - Obaseki

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that the state government has placed orders for new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-buses to boost its fleet for the state’s free transport scheme.

The governor, who said this in his Independence Day speech, noted that his administration is, “taking critical steps within the limits of the resources available to us as a state by initiating and implementing policies and programmes to respond to the recent fuel subsidy removal policy by the Federal Government.”

According to him, “We have introduced free transport service for passengers on all routes operated by the state-owned Edo City Transport Service (ECTS), among many support programmes that the Edo State Government has put in place to reduce the challenge, sufferings and exorbitant cost of living faced by Edo people.

“We are glad with the salutary impact of this initiative which covers 13 intra-city routes and several intercity city routes daily, covering towns and villages within the State’s three senatorial districts. Over three hundred thousand residents have benefited from the scheme in the first two weeks of the palliative programme, while we expect over 1,500,000 residents are projected to benefit in the initial two months of the free transport initiative. We have placed new orders for additional CNG-run buses to increase the fleet.”

On other measures being adopted to ameliorate the effect of the hardship caused by high transport fares, he said: “We also launched a 24-hour free Wi-Fi service in various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and other public places in the State to provide unlimited internet access to workers and other residents to enable them work effectively and efficiently from selected public spaces.”

Obaseki celebrates Chief Ogbebor at 80, hails contributions to devt of society

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has eulogized the Osaguobaro of Benin Kingdom, Chief (Barr.) Bright Ogbebor on his 80th birthday, hailing his contributions to the development of society.

Obaseki who was accompanied by top government functionaries to the birthday celebration of the Chief Ogbebor in Benin City, described the celebrant as a progressive who believes in the growth and development of the society, State and Country at large.

He said, “I have known the celebrant for over 30 years, his name is synonymous with the Nigerian Brewery as he was the Company's Secretary for a very long time. To imagine that he is 80 years old is unbelievable as he doesn't look like that; he is ageless. This tells you the quality and kind of person he is, the quality of his mind as he is progressive and young at heart.

“For the three or four decades I have known him, he has always been on the right path as he believes in the growth and development of his people and the Community he finds himself in.”

Obaseki added, “I congratulate him and am very glad that he is celebrating 80 years and is very strong and healthy. We pray God keeps and preserves him in good health to be of more service to his Community and State.”

In his response, the celebrant expressed appreciation to the governor and other guests for coming to celebrate with him.

Other guests at the occasion include former Governor of Edo State, Chief John Odigie Oyegun; Secretary to Edo State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq.; Chairman of Alaghodaro, Asue Ighodaro and the Commissioner for Housing, Urban and Physical Planning, Isoken Omo, among others.

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his administration has begun to review the N40,000 minimum wage to the State workers. This is with a view to further increasing it as part of measures to cushion the impact of the fuel subsidy removal policy by the Federal Government.

Edo State government presently pays the highest minimum wage in the country.

The governor disclosed this development in his 2023 Independence Day Anniversary Broadcast, in Benin City.

He said his administration is taking critical steps within the limits of the resources available to the state by initiating and implementing policies and programmes to respond to the negative impact of recent fuel subsidy removal policy by the Federal Government.

Obaseki noted, “We have introduced free transport service for passengers on all routes operated by the state-owned Edo City Transport Service (ECTS), among many support programmes that the Edo State Government has put in place to reduce the challenge, sufferings and exorbitant cost of living faced by Edo people.

“We are glad with the salutary impact of this initiative which covers 13 intra-city routes and several intercity city routes daily, covering towns and villages within the State’s three senatorial districts.

He stated, “We also launched a 24-hour free Wi-Fi service in various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and other public places in the State to provide unlimited internet access to workers and other residents to enable them work effectively and efficiently from selected public spaces.”

According to him, “We have begun reviewing the minimum wage of our workers which is currently N40,000 (the highest in the country), with a view to increasing it as soon as the Federal Government revises the Revenue Allocation Formula.

“We will continue to ensure prompt and diligent payment of salaries and pensions, enhance the work environment and sustain the use of technology to improve efficiency and ease the work process to ensure better service delivery to Edo people."

On the deplorable state of federal roads across the State, the governor noted, “One way out of our current crises is for the federal government to urgently consider devolving authority and move more resources to the state and local governments. For example, if authority to manage federal roads and resources were devolved, the constituent units will be empowered to intervene in these federal roads that have failed across the Edo State.”

*GOVERNOR GODWIN OBASEKI’S 2023 INDEPENDENCE DAY SPEECH*

My dear good people of Edo State, I am delighted to celebrate the 63rd Independence anniversary of our dear country, Nigeria, with you.

As we reflect on the progress we have made as a nation, it is important to pause and ponder on our collective journey as Edo people and as a nation.

It is important for us to celebrate our achievements, acknowledge our challenges, and reaffirm our commitment towards ensuring a more united, progressive and prosperous Nigeria.

Ours is a story of courage, resilience, sacrifice, and the indomitable spirit of a people. Our founding fathers, who were driven by a vision of a united and prosperous country, fought tirelessly to lay the foundation of our dear nation, liberating us from the shackles of colonialism and instituting our long march to nationhood and greatness.

Although we have recorded many successes in these past 63 years, it is doubtful if we are where our founding fathers anticipated.

The last two decades in particular have seen us grapple with multiple challenges occasioned by economic, security, political and ethnic pressures. However, our enduring faith and belief in the unity and progress of our country has endured, keeping us together as one nation.

I must commend the dogged and indefatigable spirit of our people, who in the face of many daunting difficulties continue to slug it out daily to earn a living, especially amid the current economic realities.

As a government, we are aware of the very dire and difficult economic and social challenges that you currently experience, which has inflicted hardship and suffering on the people, especially the poor and vulnerable.

We are taking critical steps within the limits of the resources available to us as a state by initiating and implementing policies and programmes to respond to the recent fuel subsidy removal policy by the Federal Government.

We have introduced free transport service for passengers on all routes operated by the state-owned Edo City Transport Service (ECTS), among many support programmes that the Edo State Government has put in place to reduce the challenge, sufferings and exorbitant cost of living faced by Edo people.

We are glad with the salutary impact of this initiative which covers 13 intra-city routes and several intercity city routes daily, covering towns and villages within the State’s three senatorial districts. Over three hundred thousand residents have benefited from the scheme in the first two weeks of the palliative programme, while we expect over 1,500,000 residents are projected to benefit in the initial two months of the free transport initiative. We have placed new orders for additional CNG-run buses to increase the fleet

We also launched a 24-hour free Wi-Fi service in various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and other public places in the State to provide unlimited internet access to workers and other residents to enable them work effectively and efficiently from selected public spaces.

We have begun reviewing the minimum wage of our workers which is currently N40,000 (the highest in the country), with a view to increasing it as soon as the Federal Government revises the Revenue Allocation Formula.

We will continue to ensure prompt and diligent payment of salaries and pensions, enhance the work environment and sustain the use of technology to improve efficiency and ease the work process to ensure better service delivery to Edo people.

In light of the challenging structure of the Nigerian economy, we are doing our best to deliberately create the enabling environment for new businesses to thrive and to attract investments into Edo State.

We are transitioning Edo from a civil service-dominated State to one that is attracting manufacturing, commercial agricultural concerns, service and technology companies, real estate investors and several SMEs among others.

We have made significant progress with the Benin Port Project, with the emergence of a preferred bidder, Motal Engil, who will soon commence work.

We have taken bold steps to transform Edo into an industrial hub, with the successful establishment of two modular refineries that are currently refining crude oil.

The refineries are the 6000bpd facility operated by the Edo Refinery and Petrochemical Company (ERPC) in Ologbo, Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area and the 2500bpd Duport Refinery run by Duport Refinery Company Limited in Egbokor, Orhionmwon Local Government Area of the State.

Benefitting from our government’s business-friendly reforms, two ethanol plants in the State are in their various stages of completion and are set to be commissioned before the end of our administration next year.

The plants include the Greenhill Ethanol Plant, sited in Ologbo, Ikpoba Okha and the Dufil Ethanol Plant in the Ovia area of the State.

We are also encouraging investments in the electricity sector to grow our economy. Apart from our investment in the Azura 450MW and support for the 95MW Ossiomo Power projects, we have also passed a law setting up the Edo State Electricity Commission.

The purpose of this law is to establish an independent Electricity market in Edo State. It is expected that this will attract investors to generate and distribute electricity within Edo State, particularly to underserved communities.

In Education, we are implementing the most ambitious reform in public education, which has been acknowledged by the World Bank and the World Economic Forum as novel in tackling learning poverty.

Our healthcare reforms have ensured the running of a vibrant Health Insurance Scheme and the reform of Primary Healthcare System to ensure affordable and efficient service that cuts out-of-pocket spending.

Today, Edo is the most connected State digitally in Nigeria and operates the most digitized civil and public service in the country, with fibre-optic internet cables running across all the local government areas in the state.

The State runs an e-governance system and is the first State in the country to have entirely shifted to a digital mode of administration.

As a government, we will continue to pursue bold and transformative reforms and programmes to place our State on the path of sustainable economic growth and development, while strengthening the foundations of our society by transforming our institutions, curbing corruption, reducing the leakages in public resources and building the capacity of our people.

In spite of all our efforts to improve the wellbeing of Edo people, they still face intense hardship due to the floundering National economy. The staggering inflation, which continues to sour and the massive devaluation of the Naira, is pushing more people into poverty.

About two years ago, I had warned against the mismanagement of the economy and its concomitant effect on the value of our currency. Refusal to heed the call has led us to this dire situation.

Severely, I have raised alarm about the very poor state of federal roads in Edo State. The presence of an extensive federal road network in Edo which should have been a blessing, is now wrecking our economy because these roads are in a state of massive disrepair.

This has led to severe pressure on our State roads, which are now falling apart as most of them were not designed to handle the amount of tonnage they are now forced to carry.

To pull our country from the brink of economic collapse, we must now begin to take sincere and honest steps to stimulate economic growth, which will enable our people to lead more fulfilling and happier lives.

One way out of our current crises is for the federal government to urgently consider devolving authority and move more resources to the state and local governments. For example, if authority to manage federal roads and resources were devolved, the constituent units will be empowered to intervene in these federal roads that have failed across the Edo State.

As we celebrate our 63rd Independence today, I call on all Edo people and Nigerians to stand united, regardless of our political, tribal, ideological, and religious differences and work together towards building a more prosperous and progressive Edo State and Nigeria.

We must also continue to pray and call for good and responsible Governance from our leaders. Together, we can overcome our present socio-economic challenges and place our country on the path of sustainable economic growth and social development, ensuring that the labour of our heroes' past is truly not in vain.

Happy Independence Day to all Nigerians

God bless Edo State and Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria

Fuel Subsidy Removal: Edo govt returns to five working days for civil, public servants

*_…directs workers, residents to take advantage of free bus scheme_*

The Edo State Government has reversed its directive that reduced working days from five days to three days for civil and public servants following the removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government.

The State government had in June empathized with Edo people in the wake of the rise in prices of goods and services as well as the overall cost of living occasioned by the fuel subsidy removal, by initiating the three-day-a-week work policy and other measures to ameliorate the sufferings faced by the people.

In a circular dated September 29, 2023, and signed by the Permanent Secretary, General Services, for the Head of Service, Mrs. Priscillia Aziegbemhin, the government said the decision to reverse to five work days a week is in view of the fact that the State Government has put in place measures to alleviate the transport plight of Edo residents occasioned by the hike in the price of petroleum products.

The circular reads: “I am directed to refer to the above subject and to convey the decision of the State Government to bring to an end the implementation of the three-day weekly work schedule for Civil/Public Servants across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

“This decision is in view of the fact that the State Government has put in place measures to alleviate the transport plight of Edo residents occasioned by the hike in the price of petroleum products. It is expected that every Civil/Public Servant should take advantage of these measures.”

It further added, “In view of the foregoing, all Civil/Public Servants are by this Circular directed to resume for work every work day of the week with effect from Tuesday 3rd October, 2023.”

The State Government had on September 11 commenced a free bus ride scheme through its State owned transport service provider (ECTS), covering both intra and inter - city routes.
