CoP28: Edo strengthens collaboration with partners, reiterates commitment to sustainable environmental practices

The Edo State Government has assured key stakeholders in the environmental sector that the government is committed to responsible commodity production as well as the initiation and implementation of vital initiatives for forest protection and regeneration.

The resolution for sustainable practices was highlighted by the Acting Team Lead, Edo State Oil Palm Programme (ESOPP), Mr. Churchill Oboh, who led the Cop28 team representing Edo State, at the Climate Change Conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The conference brings together various stakeholders and parties to collaboratively explore effective strategies for mitigating the impacts of climate change and enhancing climate financing.

According to Oboh, proactive measures have been taken by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration to foster responsible production of commodities, robust forest protection and conservation, and a steadfast commitment to sustainable and responsible land use practices.

He said the Edo Team at the event engaged in strategic dialogues with esteemed developmental partners, including The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), which is focused on protecting and restoring forests and supporting policy reforms for more sustainable land use.

“Others include Mercuria, a pioneering force in investing and developing innovative forms of low carbon energy, with which we share Edo's goal of encouraging lower carbon energy production and advancing sustainable transportation practices.

“The collaboration extended to Pollination, a distinguished global climate change advisory and investment firm. Standing at the forefront of accelerating the transition towards a net-zero and climate-resilient future, Pollination provides Edo State with invaluable expertise and support in navigating the complexities of climate change initiatives. This collaborative effort reinforces the region's commitment to proactive and impactful climate action.”

He added: “We had interactive sessions with Ruth Kennedy, the Forest and Land Use Adviser to the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office, and another with the Head of Communication for Proforest, Ali Merifield. We emphasized the remarkable achievements and efforts made in Edo State so far which include the repeal of the forestry law and setting up of the forestry commission, the success story of the Africa Sustainable Commodity Initiative (ASCI), completion of a comprehensive forest inventory, and identification of areas for forest regeneration through the Land Use and Land Cover Analysis (LULCA).”

As Obaseki has accepted to make sacrifices for progress in Edo PDP, will Orbih also make concessions?

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, at a meeting with party leaders at Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) headquarters, in Abuja, said he is ready to make the necessary sacrifices to ensure peace in the party so that the party can present a united front to emerge victorious in the 2024 governorship election

But there remains the other party in the disagreement, which is the faction loyal to Vice Chairman, South South of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih.

What sacrifice is Orbih going to make for peace in Edo State?

We hope he can now remove his eyes from from the former Governor of Rivers State and FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike and his well-advertised link with the All Progressives Congress (APC) so that he can work for the victory of the PDP in Edo State.

We hope he will not continue his plans to try to destroy Edo PDP from within using Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu and former Rep member, Hon. Ogbeide Ihama

Edo govt, China-based poly seal deal to strengthen TVET, establish language, culture centre

… Edo Poly benefits from exchange programme, to develop dual diplomas

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that the State Government has formalized a partnership with China’s Shaanxi Polytechnic Institute to strengthen Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the State.

The collaboration seeks to establish a mutually beneficial relationship, fostering academic and expertise exchange between Shaanxi Polytechnic and Edo State Polytechnic, Usen, with a primary focus on the enhancement of technical education and the establishment of a Chinese language and cultural centre in the State.

The Governor disclosed this during his budget presentation at the Edo State House of Assembly, while presenting the 2024 budget to the Assembly.

The milestone agreement was sealed during the recent visit of Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, accompanied by the Commissioner of Education, Dr. Joan Osa Oviawe, and the Rector of Edo State Polytechnic, Usen, Engr. Sylvester Omoruyi, to China for the 10th Anniversary of the Belt and Road Global Chambers of Commerce and Associations Conference.

Highlighting the essence of this collaboration, Dr. Oviawe said, “The Edo State Government actively pursued this partnership to fortify the TVET framework within Edo State Polytechnic, Usen, through cooperation with Shaanxi Polytechnic Institute.”

Dr. Oviawe emphasized that the MOU aims to localize Shaanxi Polytechnic’s curriculum to enrich Edo State Polytechnic’s academic structure and facilitate knowledge transfer, commencing from the 2023 academic session.

The agreement encompasses a comprehensive strategy for capacity building, including the exchange of scholars, joint research ventures, and the establishment of cross-cultural educational programmes. These initiatives are designed to diversify the academic landscape, providing students and faculty with varied perspectives and innovative methodologies.

In a bid to further enhance educational insights, the leadership of Edo State's education sector, along with officials, will embark on an educational study tour to Shaanxi Polytechnic Institute. This visit intends to expose delegates to both traditional and modern knowledge and learning methodologies employed by the institute.

Moreover, the partnership will lead to the introduction of new programmes and the creation of a dual Diploma Award, enabling Edo Polytechnic students to spend two years in Nigeria and a subsequent year in China upon graduation.

However, this collaboration extends beyond academia; it embraces cultural exchanges. Edo Polytechnic students eagerly await the chance to immerse themselves in Shaanxi's rich heritage. As part of this exchange, the Institute will collaborate with the Edo State Government to establish a Chinese Language and Cultural Centre in Edo State.

COP28: Why I decided to attend UN climate change conference in Dubai from Benin City – Obaseki

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that he was invited to attend the 28th session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC commonly known as COP28, but opted to join the conference virtually on account of the reforms initiated to develop the State’s digital economy.

In a chat with BBC Pidgin, the governor who reeled out a list of achievements recorded in the last seven years of his administration in the State, noted that the state has transitioned to paperless work mode which has made working in Edo civil and public service flexible, better and more productive.

According to him, “I was invited to attend the COP28 in Dubai, but I told them I am going to join them virtually. We have a lot to showcase in the state as regards climate change. We are tackling deforestation, planting trees and preserving our land. Illegal tree logging is causing erosion in the state and we are determined to end the trend. It is still raining in December; there is climate change and we are working to protect our people.”

Obaseki noted that the state is massively investing in the digital economy especially with investment in digital infrastructure and manpower development.

He said: “In terms of technology, we have trained 6 cohorts of 100 students each on software engineering. Some of them are working for blue-chip companies from Edo here. We have deployed 2000km of fibre optic cable infrastructure across the State’s 18 local government areas. That is why we are able to go fully paperless in the State’s civil and public service.”

Health / Obaseki, ERA Unveil Innovative Project To Revolutionize Emergency Response In Ed by UdabaPrince100: 3:59pm On Nov 29, 2023
Obaseki, ERA unveil innovative project to revolutionize emergency response in Edo

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has partnered with Emergency Response Africa (ERA) to launch a Technology-Enabled Emergency Medical Services Project (FID-EMS), a transformative initiative to revolutionize emergency healthcare response and boost health insurance enrollment in Edo State.

The Funds for Innovation in Development (FID), a financing mechanism of the French Government, committed to battling poverty and inequality, is the key funder of the project.

The FID-EMS Project spearheaded by the Edo State Government is a response to Nigeria's significant emergency healthcare crisis, where 54% of the country’s deaths could be prevented with timely emergency medical response, resulting in over 1.23 million unnecessary fatalities. The project aims to tackle challenges such as low public health trust, broken communication channels, and inefficient data collection, among many others.

The primary focus of the FID-EMS Project is to implement a technology-enabled Community-Based First Responder programme in Oredo, Egor, and Ikpoba Okha Local Government Areas of Edo State. Selected community members will be trained as first responders, utilizing ERA’s proprietary technology platform for rapid dispatch. Ambulances and hospitals will be aggregated through technology for efficient patient transportation.

The Project is expected to drive the enrolment of community members in the Edo Health Insurance Scheme (EDHIS) for financial sustainability. Edo State is committed to leading the way as the first state to implement this innovative model as a framework for unlocking access to the Emergency Medical Transport (EMT) gateway.

Dr. Samuel Alli, Edo State Honourable Commissioner for Health, expressed pride in Edo State’s pioneering role in the project, emphasizing that, “this project is in alignment with the vision for a healthier and safer Edo State.”

He further highlighted the State’s commitment to the project by providing counterpart funding and leading a committee of critical stakeholders across the State’s Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

Anne Thibault, Chief Impact Officer at the Fund for Innovation in Development in France, which provides funding for the pilot phase, conveyed her excitement about the potential impact of the innovation in the context of Nigeria.

She emphasized, “ERA’s intervention to train volunteers to respond to medical emergencies, combined with a digital platform for facilitating the management of these volunteers, is innovative and could significantly improve the population’s access to hospitals and emergency services, especially in remote communities.”

On her part, Folake Owodunni, CEO of ERA, said, “The FID-Edo Project marks a pivotal moment in transforming emergency healthcare response in Nigeria. Together with the Edo State Government, we are committed to saving lives, improving healthcare infrastructure, and increasing health insurance enrollment, setting a remarkable example for the entire nation.”

Business / Edo IGR To Reach 70bn In 2024, Says Obaseki* by UdabaPrince100: 6:23pm On Nov 26, 2023
Edo IGR to reach 70bn in 2024, says Obaseki

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the State’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) will grow in excess of N70 billion by 2024.

The governor, while speaking to journalists in Benin City, said the State’s monthly IGR collection, since 2016, has consistently increased as a result of the conscious investments made by his administration in boosting the local economy.

Obaseki said the IGR growth will come from leveraging its comparative advantage and exploring opportunities in technology, culture, manufacturing, and agriculture, among other sectors of the state’s economy.

According to him, “For the past seven years, we have focused on the economy, setting modalities on ground to create an economic revolution in Edo State. Our focus was to attract private investors to Edo to focus on areas where we have a competitive and comparative advantage. We said government will be made an enabler to stimulate and ignite business opportunities in Edo State.”

He further noted, “Since 2016, our monthly IGR collection has consistently increased as a result of the conscious investments made in boosting our local economy. Our partnerships and popular ‘MOUs’ have set Edo on the path of financial sustainability.

“Government is now working more efficiently and we are seeing the results of the hard work in terms of revenue increases. Between 2016 and 2023, we have achieved a lot in terms of IGR for the State, and next year, we anticipate that we will get IGR in excess of N70 billion.”

The governor added, “Projects like the Gelegele Seaport and Enterprise Park, among others will further impact the Internally Generated Revenue of the State in years to come.”

In other sectors of the State’s economy, Obaseki stated, “We have done a lot with cassava and ethanol as well as oil palm in the agricultural sector. We have worked hard with partners to open up the retail space in Edo State and hopefully, before the end of the year, we will be launching about 60 shops in the Benin Mall with different facilities.

“The future we see is a State with organized infrastructure to support the private sector production. We have done a lot with the Benin Enterprise Park as we are working on the one in Benin and have acquired land to build those in Edo Central and Edo North. We are hoping that the future is one where the government will work very closely with the private sector to drive the growth of Edo State’s economy.”

Politics / The Many Lies Of Dep. Gov., Philip Shaibu by UdabaPrince100: 4:23pm On Nov 22, 2023
The many lies of Dep. Gov., Philip Shaibu

The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Mr. Philip Shiabu is going around telling Christian and Muslim clerics as well as senior editors that his office is not funded and that he has not benefitted anything from the Edo State Government since 2016 when he got into office.

Here are some of the facts:

- In 2023, Shaibu, the Deputy Governor's Office, has a provision in the budget of N1.3bn for the running of the Office. As at July, he had drawn down ALL THE MONEY, exhausting in 6 months what ought to have been spent in 12 months.

- Shaibu, in 2021, ran one of the most opaque and corrupt National Sports Festivals (NSF) in Nigeria’s history. He amassed a total of N5bn doing so. To enable him carry out this heist, he was in constant battle with the then Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Godwin Dudu-Orumen. He eventually got Dudu-Orumen fired in order to superintend over the fraud without challenge.

- Within 7 years of being Deputy Governor in Edo State, Shaibu set up over 25 filling stations across the State. He bought up the landed property on which these filling stations operate, including one of the permanent ones on Airport Road, opposite Reservation Road, in GRA.

SUCH A DISHONEST PERSON WHO TELLS THESE MANY LIES CANNOT BE TRUSTED WITH THE EXALTED AND HIGHLY REVERED OFFICE OF A GOVERNOR.

Free Bus Scheme: Edo spent N110m on diesel in 3 months

…says claims by Senator Okpebholo false, should be disregarded

The Edo State Government has said it spent N110m on diesel in three months for the free transport scheme across the State to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government on the people of Edo State.

In a statement, the Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, urged members of the public to disregard the falsehood peddled by Senator Monday Okpebholo, who represents the people of Edo Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly, on the transport scheme, which has benefitted over 1.5m Edo residents in its first phase.

According to Nehikhare, “The Edo State Government has spent N110, 509,230 in the last three months on the free bus scheme, which operates intra-city services from Monday to Saturdays and inter-city services from Monday to Sundays across the State.

“The scheme which commenced on September 11, 2023, for an initial two-month period to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government on the people of the State has continued to record success and garner positive feedback, directly benefitting over 1.5m Edo residents within the first phase of its operation.

“While we acknowledge the steep rise in diesel prices and other operational costs for the scheme, the Edo City Transport Service, ECTS, has continued to explore various avenues to offset this surge, including skeletal hire services and partnerships with different groups and religious organizations such as Christ Embassy, Church of God Mission, and Winners, among others, which has helped to augment the increase in the cost of diesel and vehicle maintenance without recourse to government.”

Nehikhare further stated, “It is therefore disheartening and ridiculous to read in some sections of the media of patently false, baseless and misleading comments by the Senator representing Edo Central, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on the free transport scheme, in what seem like a desperate bid to be noticed.

“For the record, the figures quoted by the senator are imaginary. They are ill-intentioned and have no basis in truth, and should be disregarded by all Edo people. We suspect that he may have manufactured the figures based on the fact that the government has saved citizens a total of N1.5bn monthly that they would have spent on transportation cost were they to pay for the services now rendered for free by the government.

Had Senator Okpebholo contacted ECTS or the Ministry of Communication and Orientation, he would have had better and more accurate information to share with his audience.

He added, “Edo people can be rest assured that their resources are in safe hands with Governor Godwin Obaseki, who has over and again proven his commitment to ensuring transparency, accountability, and prudent management of public resources.”

The Edo State Council for Islamic Affairs has expressed appreciation to the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, for the provision of palliative measures to alleviate the plight of members of their community, following the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.

In a statement, the Chairman of Association of Muslim Faithful, Alh. AbdulAzeez Nosakhare Igbinudu (FCA), expressed gratitude to the Governor, noting that the gesture by the State Government was apt and would go a long way in cushioning the effect of the harsh economic hardship being experienced in the State.

He noted, “On behalf of the Edo State Council for Islamic Affairs and the entire Muslim Ummah of Edo State, we wish to express our appreciation to you for giving us 100 (50kg) bags of rice and 50 (50kg) bags of maize through the Commissioner for Youths and Humanitarian Affairs.

“We have distributed these items through the various Muslim Communities, Muslim Organizations and Imams across the three senatorial zones of the State. We appreciate the opportunity given to the Council to spread the distribution to the stakeholders in the nooks and crannies of the State.”

“We appreciate your kind gestures, and may the peace and abundant blessings of Allah continue to be with you, your family and your entire cabinet. Amin.”

It would be recalled that Governor Godwin Obaseki has consistently initiated and provided palliative measures including the free inter-city and intra-city bus rides and other welfare packages to the vulnerable in the State, so as to assuage the sufferings of Edo State residents, occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.

Philip Shaibu, a former warder, who got elevated to political prominence on Oshiomhole's platform, has been vituperating in the last few days; his gluttony to be governor seems to have caused him uncontrollable ejaculation.

How does a deputy governor who have served in an administration for seven years and gained humongously turn around to say the administration he plays number two is a "theoretical administration".

What is Shaibu's definition of "theoretical administration" or "elephant project"? Was he going to say white elephant project? Infact, who are his handlers?

Shaibu's ascension to becoming the deputy governor of Edo State remains a mirage to sane minds, as he doesn't show any trait of a well-educated, polished and refined politician; little wonder, he wasn't able to climb the political ladder, until Oshiomhole came on board, spoonfeeding him all along, from House of Assembly to House of Reps, up to the position of Deputy Governor.

How did Shaibu not know that as number two, his actions lately, going by his unorthodox method of pursuing his tall, unrealistic governorship dream is antithetical to natural justice, an unpardonable betrayal of public trust and absolute misuse of power; one that will bring an abrupt and premature end to his political odyssey when he leaves office November 2024.

To discredit the monumental achievements of the Obaseki-led administration, the same government that has given you everything you own in life is the height of incompetence and disloyalty to the office.

Under Obaseki, Shaibu managed the reconstruction of Ogbe Stadium, under Obaseki, Shaibu pocketed Bendel Insurance FC, running the Club at his whim and caprice, under Obaseki, Shaibu managed the distribution of palliatives during the COVID era, he also had the State's IGR in his pocket, he has been the most fortunate deputy governor in Edo since 1999, privileges he used to increase the number of petrol stations in his fleet.

In Benin City alone, Philip Shaibu owns more than ten (10) petrol stations, this is not to talk of branches, outlets scattered across Edo North and other areas; Shaibu, a mere warder, turned politician, became a product of spoonfeeding on Oshiomhole's magnanimity.

Lacking political ingenuity, how does Shaibu intend to govern a complex State as Edo; a deputy governor without a structure and significant political followership, who lost his unit, ward, local government area and senatorial district in the last major elections; what charismatic make-up and leadership acumen does Shaibu posses to rally PDP delegates to secure our Party's ticket; he will be a major disaster to the PDP in 2024, God forbid, he gets the ticket.

What election has he won for himself; what street credibility does Shaibu parade; may be he thinks his affiliation with a popular fraternity equates to street credibility; no it does not.

It is no longer news that Oshiomhole and his men long crumbled Shaibu in his Edo North; talk less of his lack of touch in Edo Central; which known political player(s) in Edo South can Shaibu rally, none; he will be a liability to any Party that risks gifting him its ticket next year.

We are not however surprised at his actions, particularly his failed and unproductive attempt to discredit the Obaseki-led administration; the same administration he serves as deputy governor and supervised landmark projects; Shaibu is a lone jack on empty street, down and gone for broke, misled, misadvised and depressed and only now has his tall, impossible governorship ambition as medicine even as he awaits November 2024 to finally retire prematurely from Edo's political arena.

In 2024, Edo people are determined to rally behind that man with the requisite credentials to sustain ongoing reforms in education, health, security, the civil and public service; our idea of next Governor is one who has the local and international warchest to connect Edo with the rest of the world and place her on the path of progressive discourse, building her a solid structure for the enhancement of the State's advanced development, certainly not Philip Shaibu.

Politics / Obaseki Decries Persistent Inflation, Dollarization Of Nigeria’s Economy by UdabaPrince100: 6:13pm On Nov 19, 2023
Obaseki decries persistent inflation, dollarization of Nigeria’s economy

_*…urges urgent economic policy review, others*_

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has decried the surge in inflation and the dollarization of the nation’s economy.

Obaseki spoke while delivering his keynote address at the Delta State Executive Retreat 2023 with the theme, “Delivering the M.O.R.E Agenda for advancing Delta: Strategy and Enablers,” held in Asaba, Delta State.

According to Obaseki, “Everything we do today is based on the dollar exchange rate, and it’s like most of our existence depends on what we import. Imagine a Country of 200 million people that has to depend on an external economy.

“We spend about $40 billion a year in this country and you would expect that it should be enough for any country to develop but no, today, we earn less but our demand for foreign exchange is more.

“We spend about $2 billion paying school fees abroad, $3 million for healthcare treatment abroad, about $500 million buying milk and milk products, and about $10 billion importing food. We no longer earn dollars as we used to but the dollars keep going up. We will deal with inflation for a long time.”

The governor who noted the need for deliberate steps to change the narrative, said, “Four years ago, it was a different world, a different country, and a different Delta State but things are different today regarding how we handle our development because COVID-19 has changed our thinking. Nobody envisaged that there would be a pandemic that will put the world on a standstill. So, it’s not advisable to continue to adopt the same method.

“The implication is that leaders across the world pumped money into the economy to keep the economy moving and this led to global inflation which we never had in many decades and centuries.

“States, and local governments all go and collect salaries and spend more than they earn from oil. They just collect money from Abuja to just share and no country develops like that.

“The Federal Government has the responsibility of monitoring and fiscal policy. They can go the extra mile of printing money and spending what is not there. The Federal Government over the decade has perfected that and it got to a crisis point in the last administration in Nigeria.

“The nation has to deal with unprecedented levels of inflation. Inflation in Nigeria has gone up to almost 30 percent today. Who can borrow money and pay interest of 30 percent? It's not possible. If you are not giving me 30 percent of my money, I am actually losing money. Can an economy operate like this at 30 percent? Who can borrow at 30 percent to do business and make a profit? It's not possible.

“By the time a State borrows at 30 percent, will it be able to pay back? It will spend most of its resources paying debt. What is frightening and worrisome is that we depend so much on dollars for our existence. The exchange rate is all we focus on. In Nigeria, we focus on the exchange rate instead of worrying about the interest rate because everything we do today is centered on the dollars.”

In his address, the governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori thanked Governor Godwin Obaseki for the insight, noting, “We are proud to have you in our midst as we consider it very important for you to participate and share your experience of over seven years as governor of Edo State.”

We’re grooming Edo youths to proffer tech solutions to global problems, says Obaseki

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his government is taking deliberate steps to prepare young people in the State for the future, training and equipping them to creatively deploy technology to solve global problems.

Obaseki, who spoke to journalists in Benin City, said his government has spurred growth of the State’s economy, by deploying technology and promoting innovation.

According to him, “We hope to produce the most tech talent in Nigeria. We already have a partnership with Decagon where we have trained about 7,000 engineers and in the next five years, Edo will produce 10, 000 to 15,000 tech experts in Nigeria.”

“We are working with investors to set up tech parks where more young people will work, play and provide solutions for technology.”

He added, “In terms of infrastructure, we have ensured that there is a master plan and something to guide future governments as to what needs to be done and in what areas. We must make sure we introduce more technology into designing our infrastructure.”

The governor further noted, “Healthcare is about people and we have rebuilt and reaccredited our school of nursing and it is the best in the Country today. We are also rebuilding our School of Medical Health Technology which will train the human capacity required for the basic healthcare system in the State.

“We have been successful in job creation and thanks to our partners as we have created over 308,000 jobs today, directly or indirectly through our Edojobs programmes. We achieved these through various programmes like job training and skills development, amongst others.”

On security, Obaseki said, “Edo has become very safe despite pockets of incidents towards our Northern border but we are working hard to improve on our security situation. We have achieved this by collaborating with communities. Our vigilante and security network has been very instrumental to these success stories in the area of security.

“We have gotten support in building our command and control centers that give us details of every crime that happens in Edo State.”

Edo Fertilizer Company produces over 80,000 tonnes of NPK fertilizer, records N15bn in sales

The Edo State Fertilizer and Chemical Company, Auchi, has produced a total of 80,000 tonnes of NPK fertiliser and generated a total of N15bn in sales turnover.

The company was revived by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration in 2017 with a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement with WACOT Limited, an agro-input company.

A representative of Edo Fertilizer and Chemical Company, Alh. Sadiq Kazzim, at the Alaghodaro Summit in Benin City, the State capital, commended Governor Godwin Obaseki for creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive in the State.

According to him: “Today, we produce 80,000 tonnes of NPK Fertilisers in Edo State and our sales turnover is over N15 billion. The company has the opportunity to serve other parts of the country, especially the North East due to insurgency as it is difficult to allow setting up fertilizers in that part of the country.”

The fertilizer business drives a number of agriculture activities within the State and across the country, as it provides a steady supply of inputs to boost yields and improve food sufficiency.

The company also provides jobs to locals in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of the State, reducing youth restiveness and supplying farmers with much needed supplies to boost food production in the area.

Fuel Subsidy Removal: Obaseki extends free bus service by 3 months

*_…over 1.5m Edo residents benefit from first phase of scheme_*

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has approved the extension of the free bus scheme implemented by the state government for three months.

The free transport scheme was introduced on September 11, 2023 for an initial two-month period to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government on the people of the State.

Over 1.5 million residents benefitted from the first phase of the scheme which covers all intra and intercity routes operated by the State-owned Edo City Transport Services (ECTS).

While the intercity routes include Auchi – Igarra – Ibillo–Ososo; Uzebba–Ikhin – Otuo, and Abudu-Ubiaja, Abudu-Urhonigbe and Ewohimi to Ewatto, the intra-city routes are Ramat–Kingsquare; New Benin–Kingsquare; Kingsquare – Ekenwan Road; Kingsquare–Airport Road; Kingsquare–Sapele Road and Kingsquare – Adesuwa, Kingsquare–Ogida; New Benin – Upper Mission; Kingsquare–Ugbowo; Kingsquare–Agbor Road; Kingsquare–Upper Sokponba; New Benin – Ugbowo and New Benin–Aduwawa.

In a statement, the Managing Director of Edo State Transport Authority (ESTA), Mrs. Edugie Agbonlahor, said the extension is in furtherance of the government’s commitment to the welfare of Edo people, noting that the free bus scheme will now run till February 2024.

She said, “In a continued effort to cushion the impact of the federal government's fuel subsidy removal on the people of Edo State, His Excellency, the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has graciously approved the extension of the free bus service by three months.

“With the extension, the free transport scheme will now end in February 2024, ensuring sustained support for the Edo residents amid the economic realities occasioned by the fuel subsidy removal.”

According to her, “The State Government is pleased with the success and positive feedback garnered during the two-month initial period for the scheme which 1,536,904 residents benefitted from, including 33,480 commuters from the inter-city routed and 1,503,424 from the intra-city routes.

She noted that the extension will benefit persons embarking on travels to their home town during the Yuletide season, noting that the gesture is intended to ease the pressure from transportation costs for residents in the State.

She added: “The extended three-month period will further ease the mobility concerns of Edo State residents and enhance their overall welfare, in line with the government’s commitment to the welfare and well-being of the people.”

Agbonlahor added, “The Edo State Government encourages residents to take advantage of this continued transportation palliative even as we explore all necessary measures to ease the economic burdens imposed by the fuel subsidy removal policy of the Federal Government.”

...commends Chief of Army Staff for set up of military base in Ehor, Sobe

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has flagged off ‘Exercise Still Water III,’ assuring Edo people of safety and security during the yuletide seasons.

Obaseki, at the flag off at Okoroma Community General Area, in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, hailed the Chief of Army Staff, the military and other security agencies for their commitment to tackling insecurity and guaranteeing the protection of lives and property of people.

He said, “I want to thank you for ensuring the flag off of this operation coincides with our 2023 Alaghodaro celebration. This is our seventh Alaghodaro celebration as we are inviting our brothers, sisters, and friends all around the world to come and see the accomplishment their government has achieved in the last seven years.”

The governor, who noted that security is the basis for development in society, said without safety and assurances of the security of lives and properties, investors will be reluctant to bring their investments or resources into any area or community.

He stated, “We thank God, particularly in the last three years as we have seen significant improvement in security in Edo State. This has been made largely possible through the collaboration of Federal and State security agencies.

“Operation Still Water is geared towards enhancing activities of security operatives to ensure that by this time of the year when we are expecting our kids and kin to come home for the celebration, Edo is safe.

“We have noticed in the last few years that we have a very low record of criminal incidents in Edo State during the yuletide seasons and we believe that with ‘Operation Still Water III,’ we will not record any incident in Edo this yuletide.”

The governor added, “I want to thank the Chief of Army Staff as well as the military formation and installations in Edo State for the support which they have given our administration. The Chief of Army Staff approved for us to build an Army Forward Base in Ehor about three years ago to deal with the high incidents of kidnapping on that stretch of Benin-Auchi Road.

“When we cried to him again last year that we are recording high incidents of criminality in Sobe axis, he approved again for another Army Forward Base in Sobe and with this installation, criminal activities have reduced in these areas and across the State.”

In his address, Commander HQ 4 Brigade Nigerian Army, Benin City, Brig. Gen. Danlami Ndahi, said the objective of the exercise is to rid Edo State of prevailing crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, farmer-herders’ clashes, child trafficking, oil bunkering, communal clashes, and drug peddling amongst others.

“The exercise will be conducted in collaboration with other sister security agencies who will perform their statutory roles as this will enhance the cooperation and collaboration of security agencies in Edo State to ensure the unity of purpose in eradicating all forms of sundry crimes in Edo State,” the military commander added.

Earlier, the Enogie of Obagie Nevbuosa, His Royal Highness (HRH) Imadomwinyi Endurance, noted, “This exercise came at the appropriate time, and choosing my community as a base is prayers answered as ‘ember’ month is a time when crime rates rise astronomically. If potential investors are not sure of their investments, they will not come into the State to invest, hence the need to improve security.

“As a Community, we will give the maximum support needed for this exercise to be successful.”

_*…commends devt strides, support for young talents*_

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said ongoing reforms in the State’s creative and entertainment sector will reposition the State as Nigeria and Africa’s creative and entertainment hub.

The governor said this when he received Edo-born sensational singer and songwriter, John Ighodaro, popularly known as Johnny Drille, who was on a courtesy visit, at the Government House, Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Obaseki said his government has, in the past seven years, undertaken nuanced reforms to change the narrative in the State, placing the State on the path of sustainable growth and development.

He noted that Edo State is blessed with talented people who are making the State proud and placed it on the global map for good, noting that efforts by his government in the creative sector have been to support and discover young talents and direct their creative minds.

Obaseki noted, “We are working to create an enabling environment for our youths to succeed especially in the entertainment Industry. We have put the modalities on ground to hunt for young talented minds in our schools and direct their young minds.

“We are working to position Edo State as a design hub as we are currently working with some Edo ladies who are into design and arts. I was with them at the Lagos Design Week. We are also looking at arts as we work with some Nigerian artists to promote arts. We have one of our citizens who won the Master Chef in Italy making us proud.”

He added, “Enhancing youthful talent in Edo State, we are focusing on music, films, arts, design and fashion. Our strategy is to be that creative hub where the real creative work is done while Lagos can be the showroom. As a government, our role is to create the enabling environment for youths in the State to succeed in their craft.”

Commending the governor for creating the enabling environment for youths to thrive in the State, Johnny Drille, said: “I thank you for making this happen. Thank you for creating the atmosphere and platform for young minds to express themselves. I have never seen people proud to be citizens of the State like now that you created opportunities for them to excel in the entertainment industry.

“I was at the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub. I visited the studio, cinema and other different parts of the building, it's wonderful. This is the kind of facility the youths need to express themselves. Youths are now proud to be from Edo and working hard to excel as well as succeed as the platform has been created by your administration.”

He further noted, “We have so many talented youths waiting to be unleashed and shine, taking advantage of the platform created by the Governor Obaseki-led administration. We are grateful for a platform like the creative hub. I performed at the Alaghodaro Concert last year; it was amazing seeing lots of young and talented minds.

“We have several Edo artists doing well like Rema, Shallipopi, myself, and others who look forward to spotting Edo young talent and also are able to assist in several capacities to elevate our arts, culture and entertainment industry in Edo State.”

Education / Why We’re Offering Automatic Employment To All First-class Graduates In Edo, By by UdabaPrince100: 6:00pm On Nov 06, 2023
Why we’re offering automatic employment to all first-class graduates in Edo, by Obaseki

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his government’s decision to offer automatic employment to all first-class graduates of Edo extraction from universities across the nation is aimed at developing the right workforce to drive the State’s growth and development.

The governor said this when he received 21 first-class graduates who were recently employed in the State’s Civil/Public Service, at the Government House, Benin City.

Obaseki explained that the decision was deliberate to bring in brilliant minds into the service to help build the State and nation.

He said, “Your choice into the service is deliberate as it is a well-thought-out plan and process to help us build our State and make it great again.

“Great nations are built by the brightest and most brilliant people like you, who left school and went straight to work for the government and such led to the turnaround of such societies. Edo will experience a turnaround and people like you will be responsible.

“You are coming into the service at a very important and interesting time when our Country is being restructured by default.

“The central government is becoming weaker as it doesn't have the resources to undertake the responsibility it ought to take according to the constitution and this will lead to a renegotiation. The system is not sustainable but yet I don't see Nigeria disintegrating.”

Obaseki continued: “We need to invite young people to deal with the situation and set the nation on the right path, threading on the path that aligns with global development. We have set ourselves as a State on the path of development. We have embraced paperless governance, connected all our local governments to fiber optic internet and built infrastructure. With young minds like yours, we will take the world.

“It’s a new world for you, young minds and running away from Nigeria will not solve the problem and the reasons why people are running away can be addressed by people like you. All we need to do is to create the opportunity, preparing you for leadership or having leaders like you to help check these challenges.”

The governor added, “We need to create a new system and re-enact a new direction for the nation and we don’t need to travel if we make this nation work.”

On his part, the Edo State Head of Service, Anthony Okungbowa Esq., who presented the first-class graduates to the governor, commended Governor Obaseki for sustaining the investment in human capital development.

He noted, “You gave us instruction for the automatic employment into Edo State public/Civil Service for first class graduates of Edo extraction across universities in Nigeria. This is the only State in Nigeria that has embarked on such, and it shows the government's disposition to quality.”

Civil society organizations in Edo State have declared their endorsement of the 2023 Alaghodaro Summit, scheduled to take place in Benin City, between November 8 and 12, 2023, commending the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki for his administration’s investment-friendly reforms which have continued to drive economic growth and development in the State.

Speaking to journalists, the groups said Edo, under the leadership of Obaseki, has enjoyed transformative policies that have guaranteed a more conducive environment for businesses to thrive, attracted local and foreign investments, and improved the overall quality of life for Edo people.

They therefore pledged to, in appreciation, come out in their numbers and work in unity towards a remarkable and memorable Alaghodaro being the last to be celebrated under Governor Obaseki as the State’s helmsman.

The summit is organized yearly by the private sector in Edo State to mark the anniversary of the governor in office and showcase reforms, investment, and strategic alliances that have midwifed the transformation of the State into an industrial hub.

This year’s edition of the summit, in its seventh edition, is billed to run between November 8 and 12, with the theme, “The Edo Story: Creating Shared Opportunities into the Future.”

Leader of the civil society groups under the aegis of Edo Civil Society Coalition for Progress and Development, Monday Osaretin, expressed optimism of the groups to wholly participate in the forthcoming edition of the summit, noting that the last six editions met their expectations.

According to him, “From the first edition in 2017, the summit has continued to record successes, growing into a think-thank to shape insights and review efforts by the government to drive the inflow of private sector investment into the State and better the lives of Edo people in line with the vision of the Governor transform the State into the best sub-national to live and prosper in Africa by the year 2050.

“We have participated in previous editions of the summit and have never been disappointed. This year will not be different as we will be trooping out in our numbers to celebrate our performing governor who has taken deliberate steps over the past seven years to improve the lives of the majority of the people and place the State on the path of sustainable and accelerated growth and development.”

Akerele, a tainted opportunist attempts to escape ignominy with attack on Obaseki's legacy

By Hon. Ologun Peters

After a disastrous end to what should have been a promising and glowing career in public service, former Chief of Staff to Governor Godwin Obaseki, Taiwo Akerele, is attempting to stage a comeback to the limelight with a recent dig at his former boss.

Akerele, who enjoyed the privilege of being appointed as one of the youngest Chiefs of Staff in the country by Obaseki, squandered the privilege by exiting the Godwin Obaseki-led administration in the thick of the face-off between Governor Obaseki and his predecessor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

He was one of Governor Obaseki’s first appointees, who had previously served as an executive in the Edo State Employment and Expenditure for Result (SEEFOR) programme in the State.

Akerele recently took umbrage at Governor Obaseki’s message to leaders and party faithful in Igarra, headquarters of Akoko Edo Local Government Area, during the inauguration of newly appointed Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) and Special Assistants (SAs) in the local government.

The governor had hinted that he has high regards for the people of Akoko Edo LGA, which is why he defied all odds in appointing Akerele to serve as his then Chief of Staff.

But Akerele would have none of this, issuing a statement against the governor, lampooning his developmental efforts and questioning the governor’s politics.

For the outsider looking in, it would seem that the move was inspired by a sense of principle and commitment to noble ideals, however, it would come to the fore much later after Akerele left office that he was indeed a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Fronting a Marxist persona to regale and impress his friends and associates, Akerele is no different from the archetype corrupt politician who abuses his office for wanton personal accumulation of wealth.

During his time as Chief of Staff, he was notorious for engaging in clandestine and avaricious moves through which he cornered resources and acquired property overseas, obviously through dubious dealings.

The level of his corrupt deals was so humongous that he was eventually being blackmailed by opposition interests who used evidence of his sleaze to threaten him, and in the process, obtain information about happenings in government to aid their attack on Governor Obaseki.

Hence, Akerele was notorious for playing the mole in government. He was in the habit of leaking official secrets to the opposition, betraying the trust of his principal, who had placed him in a position that required a surfeit of integrity and tact in handling confidential matters.

In the height of the quarrel between Obaseki and Oshiomhole, there were numerous instances when issues discussed in trust and within the governor’s inner sanctum got to the opposing camp even before the meetings ended. Akerele would, through his actions, sabotage moves, leak official secrets and divulge key information to paymasters in the other camp who he was beholden to, notwithstanding the impact on the government.

However, before his supposed resignation, deliberate effort was made to restrict Akerele access to key discussions and engagements because there was suspicion that he was acting as a mole.

True to the suspicion, these leakages ceased to happen. It was such that whenever he was not around, secrets were kept and when he was around, intricate details sneaked to the opposing camp.

This was what constituted the character of the man, Akerele, who today is standing on the rostrum, pretending to be a champion of good governance and accountability when he couldn’t even be trusted with official secrets to advance the business of governance in Edo State.

Akerele is beating his chest, brawling for a debate on public policy, politics and governance. He has only handled two public offices and has shown very bad and repugnant antecedents. It is shameful that he even finds the time to spew the nonsense that he has regaled the public with.

He should be advised that we have very comprehensive documentation of his sins in government and his attempt to hide behind the veneer of respectability does not fool everyone.

The governor’s developmental strides are spread across Edo’s three senatorial district and cut across agriculture, infrastructure, institutional reforms, digital economy, education, healthcare, forestry, welfare enhancement, energy, oil and gas, security, sports, youth development and job creation.

One of the most iconic projects perhaps is the Edo State Oil Palm Programme (ESOPP), which has attracted $560 million into the State’s economy with over 70,000 hectares of palm oil estate allocated to 10 investors. Some of them have commenced first harvest from their fields. The foresight in this feat is revealed in the fact that just a few days ago, Indonesia conducted a commercial flight with a plane powered by palm oil-blended jet fuel. Aside the inherent benefit of oil palm as a cash crop, a new frontier is opened with the use of palm oil as aviation fuel.

If this is not enough foresight in public policy implementation, what else is? This is aside the two operational refinery projects in the State; over 145MW off-grid power generated; over $4bn attracted in seven years among many other key developmental projects initiated by the government to transform the state from a civil service state to an industrial haven.

Akerele has no locus standi to engage in any meaningful discourse on Obaseki’s legacy and no matter his feigned claim as a public policy expert, he is only but a tainted opportunist seeking undeserved attention in the wake of the governorship election scheduled for next year.

BOWFT 2023: Edo First Lady, other governors’ wives make case for girl-child, recommits to combating gender-based violence

The Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki and other members of the Nigeria Governors’ Wives Forum (NGWF) have made the case for the grooming and empowerment of the girl-child, restating their commitment to ending the scourge of gender-based violence (GBV) in the country.

Mrs. Obaseki who spoke during her welcome address at a seminar held as a sideline event for the third edition of the Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament (BOWFT) on Tuesday, in Benin City, said the Edo State Government has over the past seven years prioritized policies to protect the girl-child and ensure their wellbeing.

She noted, “This is the third year of this tournament as we set out from the beginning not only to play football but to fight and address social vices that affect women and girls. We address issues that are prevalent in society.”

According to her, “The issue around GBV is a fight for all of us as the governors’ wives. We came together to fight and will continue to fight until there is zero tolerance for this issue in Nigeria.

“During our first outing, we got recognition from FIFA as they gave us an award for the initiative and for using the platform to empower our girls. We are trying year after year to maintain the height of professionalism and maintain world-class standards to get more FIFA recognition.

“BOWFT has been referred to as the foremost women's football tournament in Africa and we are proud. We aim to make Nigeria women's football known around the world. This year, the theme is ‘Stop Gender-Based Violence,’ and this is a focus of Nigeria Governors’ Wives Forum, as this issue is taken seriously.”

She added, “A lot of GBV happens in schools, communities and other places and children are afraid to speak out but we are enlightening them on the Violence Against Persons (VAP) Law, encouraging them to speak up, make them bold to join us in this fight, ensuring that we fight the scourge and reduce it to the barest minimum or completely eradicating it.”

The Chairman, Board of Trustees, NGWF and wife of former Ekiti State Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, commended Mrs. Betsy Obaseki’s efforts in the fight against gender-based violence, noting that the efforts by the governors’ wives have continued to yield positive results.

She stated, “The issues of gender-based violence are important to us as members of the NGWF and we set up a support group in 2020 to fight against gender-based violence and 13 States bought into it and passed the VAP Law. As of today, 35 States in Nigeria have already passed the VAP law, addressing GBV as Kano State is the only State yet to pass the VAP law.

“We would encourage Betsy Obaseki to continue her good fight against GBV. GBV is a fight for all of us in our schools, churches, and workplaces as we have dedicated our lives to the fight against the scourge and ensure it is no more in the country.”

The United Nations (UN) Women’s Country Representative to Nigeria, Ms. Beatrice Eyong, said, “We also commend the NGWF and the NGF as their efforts have seen to the declaration of war against gender-based violence in Nigeria where 35 States as of today, have passed the VAP law. We need alliances to fight this scourge.”

The Edo State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi commended the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration for the passage of the VAP law which has led to over 50 convictions while 200 more are undergoing persecution across the State.

He noted, “GBV should not be tolerated in the country and as a State, the Ministry of Justice is pursuing several GBV cases. Victims in Edo State are getting justice as a dedicated court has been set aside to hear GBV-related cases. Perpetrators in the State would not go unpunished as many are being prosecuted for their wrongdoing. We all need cooperation to ensure we fight the scourge to a standstill.”
