Politics / Edo LGA Polls: Obaseki Commends EDSIEC, Impressed With Voters’ Turnout by UdabaPrince100: 5:05pm On Sep 02, 2023
Edo LGA Polls: Obaseki commends EDSIEC, impressed with voters’ turnout

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has commended the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) for the smooth conduct of the local government election.

He gave the commendation after casting his vote at Ward 4, Unit 19, in Emokpae Model Primary School, Oredo LGA.

The governor arrived at his polling unit at about 1.48pm and voted at exactly 1.51pm.

Addressing journalists after casting his vote, Obaseki said he is impressed with the turnout of voters across the State, noting, “The turnout was very impressive in spite of the rain. There was quite considerable turnout and it showed the interest in the local government election. This means that the political parties did well by going round sensitizing and mobilizing the electorates and the people."

He added: “The process has been smooth and peaceful as a lot of people are still hanging around to see the end and conclusion of voting. I am very impressed by what has happened as the organisation by EDSIEC has gone fairly well. You have so many people still here at almost the closing of the poll, which shows that we have a fairly decent turnout.

“I have been getting updates from across the State and this seems to be the trend all over. I have not received any report of violence yet and pray everything goes smoothly.”

He added, “I believe that the popular candidates will win as you can see the presence of voters and agents around. I think people will accept the outcome of the results when they are ready. I’m sure voting time will be extended instead of allowing voting to end at 2.30pm. I’m sure they will extend and allow citizens and voters to exercise their franchise.

“I expect that you will find some opposition here but I know Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) went all out to mobilise for this election and I don't know of other political parties,” he noted.

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has donated 150 motorcycles to members of Edo State Security Vigilante Network (ESSVN) to boost their operations in ensuring security of lives and properties across the state.

At the handing over of the motorcycles, in Government House, Benin City, the governor said the motorcycles will boost the operations of ESSVN and enable members of the group to access remote areas and provide security for Edo people.

“We are handing over 150 motorcycles to members of Edo State Vigilante Security Network to enable them access remote areas and provide security to our people in Edo State. Please accept these motorcycles on behalf of the Edo State Government,” he noted.

Also, 18 sienna buses purchased by the Edo State Chapter of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) were also donated to ESSVN.

According to the Edo State Commissioner for Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Monday Osaigbovo, the 18 sienna buses donated to ESSVN will also boost and motivate their operatives in securing the people of Edo State.

He said, “18 Toyota sienna buses were purchased by the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) Edo State branch to support ESSVN. The governor has directed ALGON to focus more on Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and hope that as we get more IGR, we also raise more funds to buy more but this is to support ESSVN.

The Coordinator, ESSVN, Col. Kole Omomia (Rtd) expressed appreciation to the governor and Edo State ALGON for the donation, noting, “We thank the Edo State Governor for the bikes. Be rest assured sir that we will make judicious use of these motorcycles and ensure it gets to where vehicles can’t get to and reduce crimes and criminality to the barest minimum in Edo State.”

Politics / We’re Transforming Edo Into Africa’s Art, Tourism Hub, Says Obaseki by UdabaPrince100: 6:09pm On Aug 29, 2023
We’re transforming Edo into Africa’s art, tourism hub, says Obaseki

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his government is transforming the State into Africa’s arts and tourism hub, noting that the ongoing construction of the Museum of West African Arts (MOWAA) will further bolster efforts at promoting cultural renaissance and attracting tourism receipts to the State.

Obaseki, who spoke when he received members of Jazz Culture, who paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, Benin City, said the government is redesigning the city centre into a cultural hub to woo more investors into the State’s tourism sector.

The governor said, “We are doing a lot in the creative arts with MOWAA, with the pavilion that we are building. We are also redesigning the city centre into a cultural hub. Once we finish with the traffic studies, we will actually seal up the city centre and redirect the traffic to have a proper city centre with museums, galleries, and cafes, among others. Groups like yours will have outlets to perform and express themselves.”

Speaking on organising a Jazz Festival in the State, Obaseki said: “It's not the idea but executing the idea and making it a reality that should be the focus.

“Government facilitates and enables; the government doesn’t participate. A proper vehicle needs to be constituted first that will have the responsibility to organise and get the support and sponsorship of government and other organisations.

“As a government, we are supporting culture actively. Beyond just putting a festival together, we need to teach the whole art of and signs of Jazz in schools and other places of learning. With the support of the German Government, GIZ, we have encouraged and supported a lot of young people in theatrical productions and plays so as to encourage the spirit of theatre.”

Earlier, the leader of the group, Prof. John Ogene, who acknowledged the efforts of the governor in upgrading and revamping the tourism culture in Edo State, said: “We want to acknowledge and appreciate the efforts you are making towards elevating and uplifting culture and tourism sector in Edo State as it is a multi-billion dollars opportunity for the State. Jazz is a Legacy of the black race to the world.

“Edo State being a hub in the Country should be at the forefront of promoting this art form. If we are able to harness the available resources we have on ground in terms of tourism outlets, we would be able to make Edo State standout clearly as a leader in the promotion of jazz.”

Politics / Obaseki Charges Edo People, Commuters To Plead With Tinubu To Allow Him Fix Fede by UdabaPrince100: 5:07pm On Aug 29, 2023
Obaseki charges Edo people, commuters to plead with Tinubu to allow him fix Federal roads

...urges sustained partnership with religious leaders to drive growth, devt

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said despite several entreaties by his administration, the federal government has refused to allow the state government to fix the dilapidated federal roads in the State.

Obaseki said this while addressing the congregation at the inauguration of the Ministry and the enthronement of Ven. Ebenezer Omeiza Saiki as the second Diocesan Bishop of Akoko-Edo Diocese at St. James Cathedral, Ugbogbo, Igarra, in Akoko Edo Local Government Area of the State.

The governor, who decried the deplorable state of the roads and the need for urgent intervention to ameliorate the sufferings of the people, called on residents and other road users to plead with the federal government to allow the State to take over the roads and fix them.

Speaking to the congregation, Obaseki said, “I promised His Royal Highness (HRH) the Otaru of Igarra that I will be attending the Abba Festival as a special guest a couple of days ago. I actually was on my way but no road to get there, so I went back to Benin.

“I want to repair and fix your road but you have to help me beg them in Abuja to let me do it because they say it's their own road and will not allow a State to work on their roads and fix them. So, you have to help us beg the Federal Government so that they will allow us to take these roads and fix them.”

On the need for sustained collaboration between political and religious leaders to drive growth and development across the State and Country, the governor noted, “If we are to make progress, it makes sense for any leader in government to partner with leaders in the church to understand what is going on with the people they govern.”

He continued: “As a governor who deals with everybody in Edo State, I know the importance of the Church, which is why we don't joke with the Church and our religious leaders. The role of the Church is so important because people approach religious leaders when they are in need and in a hopeless situation to help them through that challenge. A lot of people come to see the religious leaders but how many people can reach me? They do more for you sometimes than the government does.

“I am here to fulfill a pledge and the promise I made. I met the Bishop about two months ago in Abuja. Our Bishop came to inform me that he will be installed as Bishop today and I promised to be here today.

“We are here to celebrate a great man and join his family to thank God for his life and pray that God will give him a long reign to take care of the flocks in this Diocese. Congratulations to you my Bishop and I am assuring you that we will support you.”

The Archbishop of Bendel Province and Bishop of Ughelli Diocese, Most Rev Cyril Odutemu while welcoming the governor and his entourage, said Ven. Saiki will be the Bishop to preside over the Diocese for the next 25 years.

He stated, “I appeal to the governor to support the Bishop. We know there are storms but the Lord will be with you and help you to finish strong. We thank you for the colloquium organized to mark the 60th anniversary of the Midwest Referendum, and the 32nd-year celebration of the creation of Edo State. We thank you for remembering the heroes’ past as you will be remembered for good.”

The clergy admonished, “Friends are many when you are in government and those who will tell you the truth are few because everybody wants your favour, and because of that they will always and continuously tell you lies. God will help you and all members of your cabinet as you will not serve the people in vain. You will achieve your desire on the altar of patience.”

Edo govt disbands Deputy Governor’s media crew, directs Ministry of Communication to step in

The Edo State Government has disbanded the media crew attached to the Office of the Deputy Governor, with a directive to the Deputy Governor to henceforth request the Ministry of Communication and Orientation for media coverage of activities of his office.

This directive followed the ugly and unfortunate incident that happened during the colloquium held to mark the 60th anniversary of Midwest Referendum held at the Sir Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub and Soundstage, where some journalists, who claimed to be the media crew of the Deputy Governor, attempted to force their way into the hall where the governor and other invited dignitaries were already seated.

This act was contrary to the accreditation protocol that had been established for media coverage of the event.

The orchestrated and stage-managed walkout and disruption is highly regrettable.

Politics / Midwest At 60 Anniversary: Obaseki, Oborevwori, Oshiomhole, Others Chart Path Fo by UdabaPrince100: 5:36pm On Aug 28, 2023
Midwest at 60 Anniversary: Obaseki, Oborevwori, Oshiomhole, others chart path for region’s devt, growth

...We must plan for our future, promote competition, stop reliance on FG for direction, resources – Obaseki

Edo is one, we must continue to work for our progress – Oshiomhiole

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki; his Delta State Counterpart, Sheriff Oborevwori and the Senator Representing Edo North Senatorial District and former Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and other stakeholders from the South-South region, on Monday, converged on Benin City, to chart a new path for the region’s growth and development during a colloquium to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Midwest Referendum.

The colloquium, with the theme, 60 years after the referendum, which way Midwest?’ had in attendance leaders and other stakeholders from Edo, Delta, and Bayelsa states.

Obaseki, who noted that the region is still bedeviled by numerous social and economic challenges 60 years after the referendum, reiterated the need to plan better for the future of the people and attain accelerated development with a less cumbersome system of government that promotes competition among sub-nationals and discourages the constant resort to Abuja for direction and resources.

The governor in his welcome address at the event said, “Today marks a significant milestone in our history as we reflect on our journey as a people, celebrating our achievements, acknowledging our challenges, and renewing our commitment to the ideals that shape our present and future.”

He stated, “Six decades ago, the people of Edo, Delta and parts of Bayelsa State united in agreement for their self-determination, to chart their own course to political and economic freedom and break free from the chains of regional dominance.

“The Midwest Region in 1963, which was carved out of the then Western Region, three years after Independence and colonial rule, was a product of the bold character and love for freedom of our forebears. The region which later came to be known as Bendel State in 1976, was the first State in Nigeria to be created by a referendum, signaling our staunch belief in democratic ideals.

“It was the foresight, sacrifice, and struggle of courageous and notable leaders such as Oba Eweka II, Oba Akenzua II, Chief Dennis Osadebe and Chief Anthony Enahoro, among others that secured the creation of the then Midwestern Region. They had braved the odds and battled to create a distinctive political identity for a people who have always loved and cherished their freedom, culture and creative energies.”

Obaseki added, “The story of the Midwest Referendum is one of unity, resilience, and the power of collective action as it marked the beginning of a new era with which we took control of our destinies and that resulted in growth, development and progress. It is a story that continues to inspire us to this day, reminding us of our capacity to overcome challenges, transform adversity into opportunities, and forge a better path for ourselves.”

The governor continued: “Sixty years after the referendum, we are still bedevilled with numerous socio-economic challenges, which require a reset of the institutions and structures that propped the region up in the past.

“This is why we have undertaken holistic reforms of our institutions in Edo State in the last seven years. We have advanced reforms and innovations in various spheres of the economy that have opened Edo up for investment.

“We must continue to work together to overcome challenges, build on our successes, and sustain collaborations toward building a strong and virile region.”

He queried, “An important question to ask is: Are the conditions that led to the Midwest Referendum in 1963 not staring us in the face in Nigeria today? Would we not be able to plan better for the future of our people and attain accelerated development with a less cumbersome system of government that promotes competition among sub-nationals and discourages the constant resort to Abuja for direction and resources?”

The governor further noted, “Nigeria is in dire straits today as a result of the poor handling of our economic fortunes. And with the removal of the fuel subsidies among other political and economic challenges, perhaps the Midwest option may just be what we need to fall back to in order to stand a chance at survival and set a new course for economic rejuvenation.

“I extend my deepest appreciation to all those who have contributed to the growth and development of our dear Midwest region, now Edo and Delta States. We must continue to work together to build a State that stands as a beacon of progress, a model of good governance, and a testament to the indomitable spirit of our people.”

The Governor of Delta State represented by his Deputy, Monday Oyeme, said, “It is worthy of note that when the people decide on a stand, nothing can change it not even intimidation. 89 percent of people voted for a referendum to opt-out from the western region to form the Midwest region without violence as the people’s choice prevailed.”

Oshiomhole, who described the event as apt, thanked Governor Obaseki for organising the event and bringing stakeholders from Edo, Delta, and Bayelsa states to chart a path for their future.

He said, “This is the kind of event that is needed as it will bring the unity we need for the progress of our people. When I received the invitation letter personally signed by you, I said to myself that I must be here to solidarise and support you as Edo is one.

“There are a lot of young people here in this hall and this kind of event will enable our young people to know when the Midwest was created and formed. The Midwest is truly the only region of unity that came together to fight for its freedom.”

Subsidy Palliatives: FG must not gag elected officials when they speak truth to power – Edo govt

The Edo State Government wishes to express its displeasure on the recent press statement credited to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammed Idris, over Governor Godwin Obaseki’s comments regarding the Federal Government’s handling of the resultant effects of the removal of fuel subsidy.

It is unfortunate and sad that the Federal Government now wants to gag citizens and even a popularly elected governor from speaking truth to power and expressing himself in the light of the perilous times we have fallen into.

This action of the Minister is reminiscent of what happened in 2021, when Governor Obaseki raised the alarm over the irregular and illegal printing of money by the Federal Government through the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The claim that Governor Godwin Obaseki failed to attend the National Economic Council (NEC) meetings is blatantly false. The governor has attended all NEC meetings since the onset of this administration and records are there to prove this fact.

Records of Edo State Government’s performance are also available for Nigerias to verify. Our reforms in the education sector, especially the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) programme has been hailed globally; in the agriculture sector the Edo State Oil Palm Programme (ESOPP) Programme is currently one of Africa’s largest agricultural programs; our radical reforms in the civil and public service with the government’s e-government and capacity enhancement initiatives, as well as the development of a valid and effective Social Register, to mention but a few.

The area where the Minister may be referring to as non performance should be the condition of the extensive Federal Roads running through the state, which the Federal Government has abandoned and even prevented us from intervening to repair claiming that contracts for their repairs have been awarded.

Isn’t it rather unfortunate that the Honourable Minister in his first outing has taken this untoward route when he ought to be reconciliatory and seek to synergise ideas and opinions on how best to carry the country along in this difficult and trying times that we have found ourselves?

Politics / Obaseki Charges 4 New Commissioners To Serve Edo People by UdabaPrince100: 6:20pm On Aug 25, 2023
Obaseki charges 4 new commissioners to serve Edo people

...says we’re now focused on sustainability

...we’ve laid foundation for rebuilding Edo

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has charged the four newly sworn-in Commissioners to serve Edo people, noting that public office is not a venture to make money but to serve the people.

Obaseki gave the charge when he swore in the four new commissioners at the New Festival Hall in Government House, Benin City, the Edo State capital.

The governor said when he made the appointment weeks ago he was criticised for appointing his critics but that he insisted that they had to come on board and bring their wealth of experience to ensure that his administration finishes well.

“They come with a lot of experience and also with political strength. When I made the appointment a few weeks ago, I got criticisms from various quarters that some of them are very strong critics of this administration and I said that is the reason why they should join us.

“There are clearly some things they see from the outside that we are not doing inside and now that they are joining the team, they will help the team inside to see better on what to do to finish well.

“We have listened to their qualification and experience as their CVs were read to us and I have no doubt in my mind that all of them who are joining us here today have all that it takes to finish well with us.”

The governor continued: “You have taken your oath of office and I hope you will keep copies and always reflect on the oath taken. You have taken an oath to serve our people. You are coming into public service to serve the public and you are not likely to make money. Public office is not a business where people come and make money but an office where people come and serve and give of themselves.

“When people ask you, when you have been there, what have you gained or done for yourself? Let them know that you are not there to do for yourself but to do for them. You are in office to provide services for the people so that life will become better for the people.

“As an administration, we have accomplished quite a lot and now that you have joined, you will see what we have done. We have not spoken so much on what we have achieved but given your strength, I know you will now help others who don’t understand to appreciate what we have accomplished, what we have done, and why we have done the things we have done.

“This government has been a foundation-laying administration to help us rebuild Edo so that Edo can be great again. Our people have been our number one priority as without them development cannot happen. That is why we focused on areas like education, strengthening the public and civil service to be able to provide services for Edo people.”

He added, “Today, you have taken an oath to serve and the world is looking at you. You are here to serve Edo people, not Godwin Obaseki. If it was about service to Godwin Obaseki, I don't think I would have nominated you because some of you have not been too kind to me in terms of what you have written, but it's about the State and Edo people.”

Noting that his government will in the remaining 14-months focus on sustainability, the governor said: “We still have a lot to do even though we have only about 14 months left.

The priority for us is to make sure that we build sustainability into what we are doing because the question on the lips of most Edo people is, Governor Obaseki, when you complete what you are doing, are we sure the next administration will be able to sustain what you have started?”

He stated, “Our role in the next 14 months is to put in place a structure and communicate very effectively with our people what we have done as this will help the people checkmate them. This is why the 30-year development plan for Edo is a priority as Commissioners would be involved in engaging the people in a town hall meeting, letting the people know about the plan of government and the foundation put in place in the last seven years. What we have started will not end with the administration.

“The cabinet we have now has the sole responsibility to work with me to ensure that what we have achieved in the last seven years is sustained beyond the tenure of this administration. I believe that the four new Commissioners have what it takes to contribute in making Edo great again.”

Responding on behalf of other Commissioners, Osilama Okuofo, commended the governor for finding them fit for the position, noting, “We are proud to be part of the team and are ready to contribute our quota no matter how small to ensure that the team finishes well and Edo becomes great again.”

Edo unveils activities for 32nd anniversary, 60th year of Midwest Referendum

The Edo State Government has unveiled activities to mark the 32nd anniversary of the creation of the Edo State and the 60th anniversary of the Midwest Referendum.

While Edo State was created alongside 11 other States on August 27, 1991, by the regime of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, the referendum for the creation of the then Midwestern region of Nigeria, later renamed Bendel State in 1976, now Edo and Delta states was held in Saturday July 13, 1963 following the March 29, 1963 proclamation of the Federal Government of Nigeria empowering the Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs to conduct the referendum.

CAF Cup: Go for victory, Obaseki urges Bendel Insurance

...warm reception awaits you back home, gov assures

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has charged Bendel Insurance Football Club team to go for victory as they travel to Algeria for the return leg game against Aso Chlef FC of Algeria, scheduled for Saturday, 26th August 2023.

The Benin Arsenals are heading into the return-leg with a home win advantage after defeating visiting Aso Chlef of Algeria by 1-0 in the first leg of the 2023/2024 CAF Confederation Cup Preliminary Round match played last Saturday, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Obaseki led sports lovers in the State and other top government functionaries to bid the team farewell ahead of their departure from the Benin Airport as they traveled to Algeria for the match.

The governor said, “I am sure you are prepared for the Algerian journey. I know that the team knows what to do and I am sure you will play better there than in Benin City because you were anxious about the home crowd.

“You have nothing to lose in this encounter but everything to gain. They are old men, and I know they don't have stamina. I am here to see you, motivate you, and ensure you are in good spirits.”

The governor urged them to follow the instructions of the team coach, Monday Odigie as well as his game plan, which had helped the team remain unbeaten throughout the just-concluded season in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

Obaseki charged further, “Follow the instructions of your Coach. You know you have not lost any matches this season. I know you will not lose this one, good luck. Something is waiting for you when you return from Algeria, just put in your best and make us all proud.”

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, leaders and members of the Edo Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Tuesday, took the party’s campaign to Orhionmwon Local Government Area (LGA), urging voters in the Council to massively vote for the party’s candidates during the September 2, 2023, local council elections.

Speaking to party faithful in Abudu, Orhionmwon LGA, the governor said the local council is dear to his heart, noting that his father hails from the local government area.

He was accompanied by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Osaigbovo Iyoha and the Edo PDP Chairman, Anthony Aziegbemi, among other leaders of the party and top government officials.

Obaseki said, “Orhionmwon is special to me; the LGA is dear to my heart and I will not play with any issue relating to Orhionmwon. We will do all within our power to develop the area. To make this easy is to have a reliable council chairman. I need a man that will draw my attention to issues in the council area.

“I need a grassroots person, a man that is loved by his people and a good man like Hon. Oghomwen Newman Ugiagbe, who has worked with the people.”

The governor added, “He has worked with me and he did well while working for me. He worked as Special Adviser on Community Matters and his performance was good; he can repeat the same here. Anything you want, just ask him. He knows how to get it from me as you don't have any problem.”

On his part, Ugiagbe thanked the governor and the people for the trust and confidence reposed in him, promising to support the governor in delivering the dividends of democracy to his people.

According to him, “I have worked with the governor before, and now working as chairman of the council will be easy because Governor Obaseki has laid the foundation and my own is to build on the foundation laid.

“He has ensured adequate security in Orhionmwon, and built schools, institutions, roads, and other good infrastructure and my own is to complement him in governance. Working with the governor, good governance is sure.”

Commending the governor, Ugiagbe further noted, “You are a blessing to us. We got electricity after 16 years in Abudu through your efforts. You have laid the foundation for good governance and we are getting the dividends of democracy to our people.”

Also, the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, urged the people to come out in their number to vote for the PDP, adding, “Obaseki has done so much for us in Orhionmwon, including what he did for us at College of Education in Abudu. All the investments here, from the refinery that will be producing gas, to quality roads and other infrastructure across the Council. He needs a reliable, credible and competent candidate and Newman is the man to work with the governor to develop the State.”

The LGA PDP Chairman, Stanley Iduozee, added, “We are all ready for this exercise come September 2, 2023, as Orhionmwon is for PDP. We are not only ready for the LG polls but also for the governorship election come 2024. We are ready as PDP will continue to retain Orhionmwon.”

Politics / Subsidy Removal: I’m Shocked, Scared Of Fg's Lack Of Plan For Nigerians, Laments by UdabaPrince100: 3:33pm On Aug 23, 2023
Subsidy Removal: I’m shocked, scared of FG's lack of plan for Nigerians, laments Obaseki

...Says palliative is deceitful, promises support for Edo people

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said he is shocked and scared of the Federal Government's inability to plan and effectively respond to the fuel subsidy removal policy that has further improvised Nigerians, inflicting hardship and suffering on the people.

Obaseki, while speaking to journalists in Benin City, said he had raised the alarm following the mismanagement of the nation’s economy, noting that the country’s situation is taking a turn for the worse as a result of bad policies by the government at the centre.

The governor said, “I have always warned. I warned Nigerians during the last May Day this year. I told them that we have come to the end of the road and that the old economic order in Nigeria is gone and we have to come up with a new economic order and stop deceiving ourselves as a nation.

“Now the subsidy is gone; the exchange rate is being aligned. The era of free money has almost come to an end. The consequence is that the weakest and most vulnerable in our society, unfortunately, will carry a huge part of the burden of these policies.”

He stated, “I am shocked that people who campaigned around the Country, saying that they will remove subsidies, had no clear plans on what to do after subsidy removal. They don’t know what to do and how to support those who will be victims of subsidy removal.

“I am shocked and scared of what we are passing through today where the Government doesn't seem to have a plan or solution on how to respond to the consequences of the policy measure put in place by their administration.”

Obaseki added, “With the way they have mismanaged our national economy, we have to deal with inflation, between 20 and 25 per cent. It means that the people will feel more pain, especially the weak and vulnerable in the society, particularly our pensioners as whatever they get as their entitlement will do only little for them.

Reaffirming his government’s commitment to the welfare and well-being of Edo people, the governor further said, “For us in Edo State, we would not abandon you. We don’t like the word palliative because it is deceitful as we would rather use the word ‘support’. We would support those who are already victims of this policy measure.”

FG’s irresponsibility, bad governance Nigeria’s biggest challenge, says Obaseki

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has linked the aggravating socio-economic challenges bedeviling the nation to the failure of the federal government to live up to its responsibilities.

Obaseki, while speaking to journalists in Benin City, decried the bad state of federal roads in the State, calling for urgent action to salvage the situation and reduce the sufferings of the commuters and other citizens.

The governor, who described the condition of the roads as appalling said he travelled through the federal roads linking Uromi in Esan South East to Agbor in Delta State and saw over 1,000 trailers stuck with goods as a result of bad roads.

He said, “I went to Esan land a few days ago and I passed through Uromi in Edo State to Agbor in Delta State and saw almost 1,000 trailers stuck on that bad Federal Government road. But it took a few minutes to traverse our State roads when we entered from Igueben, Ujogba to Ugoneki in Edo State.”

Obaseki added, “The problem today is the failure of the Central Government. The road network in Edo that ought to be a blessing to us is not. The Federal Government roads in Edo are connecting several locations across the Country but the roads are bad.

“You can't go from the West to the East from the North to the South without passing through Edo State. That is why we have many federal roads here but none are motorable as all are bad because of the failure of the Central Government.”

He added: “We celebrate his commitment to Nigeria’s unity and development.

“As he marks his 82nd birthday, we wish him long life in good health and sound mind.”
Business / Forex Crisis: We Must Export, Else Things Will Not Get Better – Obaseki by UdabaPrince100: 8:33pm On Aug 16, 2023
The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that Nigeria must recalibrate the economy to export semi-finished and finished products else Nigeria’s parlous foreign exchange regime will not get better.

The governor was speaking when he played host to leaders of Edo South Senatorial District of the State, in Government House, Benin City.

The floating of the Nigerian currency, Naira, by the Federal Government, has resulted in a sharp rise in the exchange rate, with $1 exchanging for as high as N945.

According to the governor, “We can't wait for the dollars. We can’t wait for everything to be imported. We need to export our own, as things will not get better soon. If we continue to work for the people in Edo, we will make the life and the future of the people better.”

The governor noted that the state government is working assiduously to improve the state’s economy and build the necessary mechanism to support exports.

He said: “In two years under the Edo State Oil Palm Programme (ESSOP), we have allocated over 70,000 hectares of land for fresh oil palm plantations. Various investors are now cultivating nurseries in the State. We are developing businesses in Edo State and creating an institution to train our people to work for those businesses.”

The governor further stated that the state’s government is building a solid base to promote exports and drive productivity, creating jobs and building wealth for the benefit of Edo people.

Politics / I’ll Not Be Distracted, But Continue To Work For Edo’s Progress, Obaseki Assures by UdabaPrince100: 6:20pm On Aug 16, 2023
I’ll not be distracted, but continue to work for Edo’s progress, Obaseki assures

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has commended leaders from seven Local Government Areas of Edo State, for supporting his administration in the last seven years.

Obaseki said this while addressing leaders from Edo South Senatorial District during a solidarity visit to the Governor in Government House, Benin City, the state capital.

According to him: “I appreciate you all from Edo South Senatorial District for being a source of support all these years, from the very first time I contested to be governor in 2016. There was massive support in 2020 and till date, you are still supporting me. I thank you for the encouragement.

“We have come a long way. We can point to many achievements we have made in the State. Most times, when we rate development work, we are quick to point to physical structures. Thank God we have enough physical structures to point to as an administration, like schools, hospitals, roads and more.

“When we came in 2016, what we take for granted today – which is law and order – was not what we have today. Street trading was rampant. Non-state actors were in charge of our revenue. These activities didn’t attract investment into our State.

“We have transformed our educational system through Edo State Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST), which is now a global programme and our administration is getting commendation around the globe. We have a lot of achievements to point to in the State.

“The drop-off ratio of students between primary six and S.S.1 was over 50 per cent. That was what we met. We met many of them in the street but the system we have created took care of this, ensuring that even those that can't further their education will have the skills to take care of themselves in the future. This is our greatest legacy.”

The governor added that his administration has improved the state’s healthcare system with the Edo Health Insurance Scheme, which many citizens are now benefiting from.

He noted that his administration has created a platform in the entertainment industry for youths in the State to become productive, noting that through the Sound Stage at the Sir Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub, over 50 Nollywood movies have been produced.

Noting that he has no time for distraction, the governor said: “In two years under the Edo State Oil Palm Programme (ESSOP), we have allocated over 70,000 hectares of land for fresh oil palm plantations. Various investors are now cultivating nurseries in the State. We are developing businesses in Edo State and creating institutions to train our people to work for those businesses.

“In security, we have trained over 1,500 Vigilante/hunter security networks in the areas of intelligence gathering, and arms handling as we work to train 10,000 more of them to help in securing the State.”

On reforms of the electricity sector, the governor said: “We fought the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) and won to get our own freedom to get electricity. Today, we have invested in our Ossiomo Power Plant and will make further investments in these areas to electrify Edo State and attract businesses.”

Leader of the delegation, Senator Ehigie Uzamere, said they came to see the governor and to re-affirm their total commitment to his administration.

He said: “Our leaders from Edo South Senatorial District resolved to visit you. You have done a lot for the State and we are here to support your administration and re-affirm our support and commitment, particularly at this turbulent time in the country.”

“We are aware of what is going on between you and your Deputy and we stand by you and pray God gives you the wisdom to take the right path. The Deputy Governor is younger brother. If he finds time to come to Your Excellency, please accept him, so we can end well,” he added.

Obaseki divides contract, engages two contractors to speed up delivery of Benin-Abraka Road

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that the state government has had to divide the contract for the construction of Benin/Abraka expressway so as to engage two contractors to ensure speedy delivery of the road project.

The governor said this during the celebration of the 70th birthday anniversary of former Edo State Commissioner for Agriculture, Sir Chris Agbonwanegbe.

Obaseki, who noted that the celebrant was committed to the development of the state and kept track of his administration’s projects, noted that Sir Agbonwanegbe constantly reminded him of the pace of work with regular messages.

According to the governor, “It is the pressure he mounted on me that made me accelerate the construction of the Benin/Abraka Road, especially the section going to Ugo. For your information, Chris, I have now divided the contract into two. I brought two contractors so that they can finish that road before Christmas.”

He added: “I have known him for the past 10 years as a brother and a friend. He is consistent, reliable and someone who believes in his people. He texts me almost every month to remind me of one issue or the other affecting Iyekeorhionmwon, particularly around Ugo.

Earlier in his remark, the former Governor of Edo State, Chief Lucky Igbinedion, who was the chairman of the occasion, congratulated the celebrant for his consistency and loyalty.
Politics / Eholor Burnishing His Battered Image With False Patriotism To The Edo Heritage by UdabaPrince100: 1:09pm On Aug 14, 2023
Eholor burnishing his battered image with false patriotism to the Edo heritage

By Christopher Ojekere

Edo people take great pride in the unique history and rich cultural heritage that set them apart from every other civilization. However, when it comes to the defence of their heritage, it also requires that the best take the stead and not some questionable characters seeking personal gains through empty posturing.

In a recent diatribe, a serial fraudster and sociopath, Patrick Osagie Eholor sought fruitlessly to vilify and cast aspersion on a performing Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki over the new regime announced by the state government where all traditional rulers in the State’s 18 local government areas will receive monthly allowances to administer their domains.

In his rambling, the rabble-rouser attempted to drag the highly exalted Royal Palace into his poorly-scripted campaign of calumny and mudslinging aimed to tarnish the very cordial relationship between the Palace, traditional institutions in the State and the Obaseki-led government.

The clout chaser, in his divisive antics, resorted to fabricating lies and spreading falsehoods in his failed attempt to undermine the governor’s sincere efforts at improving the livelihoods of the people and placing the state on a path of sustainable growth and development.

First, Patrick Osagie Eholor is not worth responding to because he is obviously not literate enough to understand the bureaucracy of government and governance or appreciate complex concepts that drive the wheel of governance.

He even lacks the moral authority to speak on the matter because he has never been a good ambassador of the State. The writer is a known fraudster who goes about defrauding Edo people from his base overseas, jumping on social media to pollute the space and cause mayhem.

In his warped thinking, Patrick Edohor believes that Edo people are unaware of his criminal records in Canada. Edohor is a known scammer who fled Canada for Nigeria when his illegal business of defrauding people went bad. To whitewash his already dead image, Edohor repackaged himself as an activist and set up another fraudulent scheme in the guise of a nongovernmental organization, One Love Foundation, where he now parades himself as the Ultimate Equal President.

In one of the paragraphs of his hogwash, Edohor presented himself as one who cared for the welfare and wellbeing of the people of Edo State. A known land grabber? His obvious anger with the Governor is because the governor dislodged him and his ilk who superintended over the reign of terror in Edo State, deploying violence to dispossess people of their landed properties and hard-earned money.

Edo people understand his antics and will not be swayed. He is a genius fraudster seeking to exploit the political arena to cleanse his battered image and savor the spoils of his ill-gotten wealth. Imagine entering into politics via the Labour Party when your values negate the values of the Party and your kind, a criminal, is exactly the kind of people that the Labour Party is against and doesn’t want around the corridors of power. What an antithesis.

In trying to understand the idea behind the tirade filled with a personal hatred for the Governor, one may be forced to ask critical questions like: Does Patrick Edohor have a copy of Nigeria's Constitution? Does he know how the law operates? Does he know what it means to enforce a 1979 law?

Edohor, the social media wailer should focus on clearing his name from his fraudulent activities and allow the governor to focus on his business of governance because his cries and wails, no matter how long, will not rewrite the governor’s transformative achievements across all sectors of Edo State, including infrastructure, civil service, economy, education, health and security, among others.

The governor’s commitment to the progress and well-being of Edo State is evident through his actions and policies aimed at driving positive change and engendering economic growth, ensuring improved livelihoods for the people of the State. Some of the efforts include increasing the minimum wage to N40,000 (the highest in the country), regular payment of salaries and pensions, improving the work environment, introducing technology to improve efficiency and easing the work process to ensure better service delivery to citizens.

The governor has been intentional about expanding the state’s economic base by deliberately creating the enabling environment for business to thrive and attract investments into Edo State, as a haven for investment. The governor has transformed Edo from a civil service-dominated State to one which is attracting manufacturing, commercial agricultural concerns, service and technology companies, real estate and several SMEs, among others.

It’s to the credit of the Governor that Edo currently has the largest oil palm plantation programme in Africa, championed by Dufil, Saro Africa and other new entrants into the Edo oil palm industry in addition to the already established ones like Presco and Okomu, among others.

It’s undeniable that Obaseki has transformed Edo into an industrial hub with the establishment of at least two modular refineries that are currently refining crude oil. The refineries as of June 2023 had placed an order for 300,000 barrels of crude for refining in their facilities. The refineries are the 6000bpd facility operated by the Edo Refinery and Petrochemical Company (ERPC) in Ologbo, Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area and the 2500bpd Duport Refinery run by Duport Refinery Company Limited in Egbokor, Orhionmwon Local Government Area of the State.

Edo is today the most connected state digitally in Nigeria and operates the most digitized civil and public service in the Country, with all local governments connected to fibre optics. The State runs an e-governance system and is on the verge of becoming the first State in the country to have entirely shifted to a digital mode of administration. The governor's track record of good governance and dedication to transparency speaks to his sincere intentions to lead the state towards prosperity and progress and Edo people are aware of these facts.

I urge the public to disregard the tantrums from Patrick Edohor and reject him in all his form or guise. Allowing fraudsters like himself to cloak themselves in the garb of politics not only threatens the sanctity of governance but also endangers the trust that holds societies together. We must stand vigilant against the manipulation and antics of Edohor and his minions who desire to venture into politics for their selfish gains, including burnishing their battered image to escape justice for their criminal records.

"The ability of a government to execute it's policies is largely is dependent on the quality and ability of it's public servants. That is why from the beginning of our Administration the transformation of the public service of our State has been given priority.

It's was clear in my mind that it will be impossible to deliver on the mandate of our Administration without a strong and effective Public and Civil Service. Unfortunately, the public service we met was very weak in several areas. It's processes and procedures has become blured because they were manual and therefore the civil service sluggish and prone to corruption and environment hazardous, offices without proper toilet facilities.

"Welfare of workers was terrible and wondered why the civil servants themselves allowed their situation to deteriorate to such an extend. Nothing like performance Management, nothing was done strategically and criteria for promotion was never merit based. You must belong to society to be considered and training and human capacity development was relegated.

"It was now important to change the narrative if we are to succeed to reposition Edo for sustainable, socio economic growth".

He further noted that in the last six years his administration has taken a wholelistic approach to revamp the public and civil service in Edo State to enable it function effectively and efficiently.

"Edo State transformation and enhancement projects in the public service which we call Edo Steps has resulted in significant and unpresidented improvement in the capacity of the public servants to delivered optimally.

"Today, the public service in Edo State is the most digitalized public service in Nigeria, with over 5,000 computer and fiber optic connection across offices in the State. By September 1st 2023, Edo State would have achieved a paperless governance environment which will make us the first State to achieve this feats. I will be the last governor to work with physical files in the State.

"The offices of our public servants in Edo State are the best they can be and well equip with State of the art facilities which can be compared to any you can fine in the world with 24/7 electricity and fast internet connectivity.

"We have taken the welfare of our public servants as a priority because we know that if you don't pay people properly, and takecare of them you should expect high productivity from them. The don't joke with the welfare of of our workforce as we ensure that all working with us have heath insurance as you don't need to pay for treatment.

"We have fully funded contributory pension scheme, which we started 1st of January 2017 and the scheme I am told that the savings in that scheme is approaching N10 billion as we will not have a situation when people retired you don't have money to pay them".

Obaseki said in order to curb and deal with the human capacity deficiet in the civil service, his administration embarked on setting up JOOPSA as a centre of excellence to train and build the capacity of public servants to enable them perform optimally.

Stating, "The Academy will undertake training, research, exchange and intellectual linkages with other local and International Institutions. It is clear to us that only a well skill workforce that can drive meaningful and impactful change in governance and sustain our development efforts in Edo State.

"The fact that we have moved Edo State Civil service to an electronic platform makes important to have the facilities where we can train and improve the Knowledge of our workforce given the fact that the training need for efficient service delivery are always going to be reoccurring because technology keeps changing. Therefore, it important we have a Parmanent structure and system to continue to upgrade our workforce in the State.

"Edo State have decide to go digital as the world has taking that direction and Edo is leading the way as we invest in extensive digital infrastructure as we are now on the verge of completing the link of 2000 KM of fiber optic connection across Edo State to connect every local government area to enable people link up to what we are doing in JOOPSA.

"Our workforce will continue to receive continue training to opt and deliver effective and efficient service delivery to contribute to the development and growth of the State.

"We decided to name this academic after the first executive governor of Edo State, Chief John Odigie Oyegun, because he is an example of what the State tries to propagate. That of integrity, fidelity, interlectualism and excellence.

"We are standing on platform played before our time and important to honour those who started the journey to encourage others to sacrifice for the Country".

Politics / Shaibu Joins APC Next Week, To Be Received By Party’s NWC by UdabaPrince100: 4:49pm On Aug 10, 2023
Shaibu joins APC next week, to be received by party’s NWC

The Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Comr. Philip Shaibu has finalized plans to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), ending the speculations amid the political turmoil between the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki and his deputy.

A high-ranking member of the APC, who disclosed this to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said Shaibu will be received into the party early next week by the APC National Working Committee (NWC).

The decision by Shaibu to pitch tent with the APC, which was predicted by political analysts, followed his move to the Federal High Court to seek an injunction against an alleged impeachment plot against him.

Governor Obaseki had however said the move by Shaibu to seek a court order to stop his purported impeachment is preemptive ahead of his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to the source, “It has been confirmed. We have on good authority that the Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon Philip Shaibu has concluded plans to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“He is to be received along a few of his supporters into the party early next week by the National Working Committee of the party. Shaibu has been in talks with the state and national leadership of the party even before the feud between him and the governor went public and has been negotiating his way back into the party.
“The deputy governor has now perfected his defection to the party and we are glad and ready to receive him into our folds.”

Obaseki had while addressing leaders from Edo North Senatorial District, the senatorial district of the deputy governor said the he was “not aware of any plot or any scheme to impeach the Deputy Governor Comrade Philip Shaibu. I have also checked and there was no such plan.

“So, the Court action taken, for me, is a thing of shock and disappointment. I believe that this action by him is a preemptive move to get a court order, keep his ticket and move to another party. I think it's unfair for our party. We don't need this sort of crisis.

“I am trying to reflect on the move made by somebody that I have given a broad latitude to do his work as deputy governor. So, for him to take this kind of action is shocking.”
Business / We’ve Grown Edo’s Budgetary Performance By 85% Annually To N320 Billion, Says Ob by UdabaPrince100: 5:42pm On Aug 09, 2023
We’ve grown Edo’s budgetary performance by 85% annually to N320 billion, says Obaseki

…says Edo best at deploying technology in public governance in Nigeria

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said e-governance reforms by his administration to improve governance and public service delivery have transformed the State as the best at deploying technology in public governance in the country.

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has disclosed that through the government’s transparency, accountability and prudent management of resources, the budget performance for the State has continued to grow significantly from N116 billion when he came into office in 2016 to N320 billion, recording 85 per cent growth annually.

This is as the governor Godwin also noted that E-governance reforms by his administration to improve governance and public service delivery have transformed the State as the best at deploying technology in public governance in the country.

Obaseki said this when he declared open the sixth Southern Zonal Accountant's Conference of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) in Benin City, the Edo State capital, with the theme, “Quest for Good Governance in Nigeria: The Chartered Accountants’ Perspective.”

The governor said his administration is undertaking nuanced reforms across various sectors of the State’s economy to ensure economic prosperity for the State, building a robust and sustainable economy driven by energy, agriculture and technology.

He noted, “The role of professional bodies like ICAN in proffering solutions that will enhance the delivery of the dividends of democracy to our citizens can't be overemphasised.

“It’s clear that, however, when you describe good governance, there must be key elements in that description. For good governance to be achieved, the processes and institutions that should produce good governance must produce results that meet societal needs while making the best use of resources at its disposal.

“Good governance in Nigeria must refer to the process where public institutions conduct public affairs and manage public resources that guarantee to realise political, economic, educational and environmental objectives.”

The governor further noted, “Under my watch as governor of Edo State, several reforms have been undertaken to promote accountability, transparency, and prudent management of resources to meet the peoples’ needs and promote good governance.

“Our collective approach as a government agrees with that of the Prime Minister of India who said good governance with good intention is the hallmark of our government implementation with integrity as our core passion.

“This passion accounts for the development of a well-thought-out six thematic pillars strategy in pursuant to our vision and mission. These six thematic pillars that have been driving our government to deliver good governance to Edo people include reforms of institutions; creating a citizen-centric leadership; making government an enabler and relying on technology.”

Obaseki added, “Edo is number one when it comes to technology adoption in public governance in Nigeria as we have E-governance software that helps us drive and run our civil service. Our goal is to build a large, sustainable economy driven by energy, agriculture, and technology and build the infrastructure that drives everything in the State.”

According to him, “In the last six years, we have reviewed our financial instructions (FI) which were used in the Western and Mid-West regions and today our FI reflects the current reality of modern public service governance.

“In the last decade, we have taken a fundamental review of our public procurement sector and undertaken fundamental reforms through the amendment of the Edo State Public Procurement Law 2012 and a review in 2020.

“As a State, we have adopted the IPSA Accounting basis of accounting in our financial reporting, and in 2020, the World Bank adjudged Edo State audited financial report as meeting the IPSA requirements.

''In 2018, we enacted the public financial management and fiscal responsibility laws in our State. We have increased Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) substantially in the State by granting administrative and financial autonomy to EDIRS.

“We have undertaken fundamental debt management reforms and adopted open governance partnership principles. E-governance reforms and leveraging technology to promote transparency, accountability and fighting corruption is one of our major achievements.”

He further stated, "The budget performance for the State has continued to grow significantly from N116 billion when I came into office in 2016 and today it has grown to about N320 billion and the performance is in excess of 85 percent annually.

“Edo State Government under my leadership has decided because of the experience and gains from your members to recruit more of you into the Edo State Civil Service.”

On his part, the 59th President of ICAN, Dr. Innocent Okwuosa, commended the governor for the prudent management of scarce resources to better the lives of the majority of Edo people, adding, “Our collective patrimony must be administered with equity, justice, transparency and accountability. Despite the compelling capacity and accountability to promote good governance and national development, the attention given by successive administrations has yielded little results.

“Nigeria can only emerge from its current State of poor governance and development if good governance is prioritized comprehensively.”

Politics / Like The Biblical Sinner, Deputy Governor, Shaibu Flees When No Man Pursues by UdabaPrince100: 6:56pm On Aug 04, 2023

Like the biblical sinner, Deputy Governor, Shaibu flees when no man pursues

...Shaibu, like a spoilt child, steering crisis because Obaseki is opting for governance instead of politics

By Dennis Osaretin

The most outstanding characteristic of a spoilt child is the attitude of entitlement and the self-embattled Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu has displayed this feature manifestly in the last six years.

The rabble-rouser deputy governor has now taken his indiscipline and hubris to the zenith by trying to create crisis for his boss, Governor Godwin Obaseki because of his inordinate and self-serving ambition to succeed the governor by all means, no matter whose ox is gored.

Like the biblical sinner who runs when no one pursues him, Shaibu has ran to the Federal High Court in Abuja, asking for a restraining order to stop Governor Obaseki from impeaching him – which is at best, a completely false allegation.

As a Deputy Governor, Shaibu has always been indisciplined and impudent. Imagine a deputy governor who on sundry occasions saunters and gallivants into the State Executive Council (EXCO) meetings while the meeting is ongoing and the governor already superintending.

The governor in most of the cases has to pause the important sessions and allow his deputy take his seat like a king. He then says hello to his superior, the governor, who continues to superintend the crucial proceedings. These are no secrets. Any Executive Council member from November 12, 2016, when the governor became the State’s helmsman till date can attest to this fact. But for the governor’s maturity, tolerance and carriage, Shaibu’s fecklessness would have hit the vortex long before now.

Imagine a deputy governor who insists that all other vehicles on the governor’s convoy must be behind his own vehicle when he and the governor are travelling together. Any vehicle in the convoy that dares to overtake his vehicle, Shaibu directs his security agents to descend on the driver and unleash mayhem on same.

A particular driver in the governor’s convoy on a trip to a Niger-Delta State in 2020 was beaten to stupor under the supervision of the Deputy Governor and his wife, Maryann. His crime was that he dared to overtake Shaibu’s vehicle in order to catch up with the governor’s convoy, where he is supposed to be. That driver is disfigured till date with a missing tooth as a mark of the beast to remind him and his unborn generations that their father dared and played in the terrain of the ultimate bully. This is the kind of person that Philip Shaibu is.

The most blame, in all honesty, goes to the governor for trying to adopt a civilized manner in relating with his deputy governor in a society where such gesture is taken for weakness. Imagine having the governor officially transferring full executive powers to the deputy governor to act on his behalf anytime he proceeds on leave.

Even though this is the right thing to do, most governors will never do it. The reason is because of characters like Philip Shaibu who in his selfishness resorts to tantrums like a spoilt child whenever he cannot have his way.

Philip Shaibu always plays the card of a very loyal deputy, but this is far from reality. His only proof of loyalty is his involvement in the faceoff between the governor and the immediate past governor of the State and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole. What Shaibu will never do is to disclose the benefits that accrued to him in the course of this contention.

The Deputy Governor, Shaibu who has worked with Obaseki over the past six years should know the Governor very well. No amount of pressure, distraction or blackmail will make Obaseki support him in his inordinate and desperate ambition to become the governor of Edo State at all cost, sacrificing competence on the altar of mediocrity and in flagrant disregard for every other interest.

Obaseki was under intense pressure from the legacy PDP group to sacrifice Philip Shaibu’s position as the Deputy Governor to the old PDP as part of their reward for offering a platform for the Governor to seek reelection after he left the APC. It was Obaseki’s insistence on retaining Shaibu’s position as Deputy Governor that caused the crisis between the Governor, his followers, and the old PDP.

Is this not sufficient reward for Philip Shaibu’s support for the governor? Or is Obaseki to sacrifice the destinies of over four million Edo people just to satisfy Shaibu?

It is Obaseki’s well-considered position that abandoning governance to pursue intense politics at this time is not in the best interest of Edo people. Shaibu should take a cue from his boss and focus on delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of the State who he swore to serve.

The Bible says in the Book of Proverbs 28:1 that “the wicked flee when no one pursues.” Shaibu flees when no one pursues, but Obaseki remains unperturbed. No matter the controversy, Governor Obaseki will not abandon governance in pursuit of senseless politics.

The resort to the courts at a time when there is practically nothing to be scared about gives Shaibu away as a man haunted by his own demons – if indeed he has the interest of the State at heart, he need not flee.

Come to think of it, during the administration of Chief Lucky Igbinedion between 1999 and 2007, the Deputy Governor at the time was Chief Mike Oghiadomhe from Etsako; he did eight years. Then came Comrade Adams Oshiomhole from Etsako West as Governor; he did another eight years. This was followed by Comr. Philip Shaibu, from Etsako West as Deputy Governor; he is almost completing another eight years.

Does Shaibu therefore think that it is fair and equitable for him to become Edo’s next governor, particularly when he is from same Etsako West where the immediate past Governor, Comr. Oshiomhole is from? Are there no other competent hands from other ethnic groups? What happens to the people from Owan East and Owan West, Akoko-Edo and the Esans? Are they not part of Edo State?

If these people are constantly disenfranchised by Edo South and Etsako people, would the consequences not be dire? Shaibu must be called to order to temper his ambition with reason.
