Obaseki accepts Shaibu’s apology, says to err is human, to forgive divine

… says dep gov’s unwarranted provocation caused him severe personal discomfort

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has accepted the public apology made by his deputy, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, noting that as a person of faith, he was under obligation to accept the apology.

In a letter titled, “Re: Public Apology By The Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu,” the governor said in good faith, he trusts that the public apology as expressed by Shaibu is genuine and followed by contrite steps to improve his conflict resolution skills.

The letter reads: “I have noted the public apology made by the Deputy Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu. This apology followed an aberrant behaviour that contradicts what the people of Edo State stand for.

“To name a few, the Deputy Governor needlessly filed unfounded petitions in the Nigerian courts restraining me, the State House of Assembly and Security agencies from a non-existent impeachment process, followed by repeated breaches of protocol; unwarranted and unprovoked attacks in the media on my person and the State Government. The media frenzy as a result of the above and more, provided an impression of crises that has been precarious and distasteful to Edo people in the State and across the world.

“Although these unwarranted provocations caused me severe personal discomfort, as a person of faith, I am under obligation to accept this apology because as they say, “to err is human, to forgive is divine.”

Obaseki further noted, “In good faith, I trust that the public apology as expressed by the Deputy Governor is genuine and followed by contrite steps to improve his conflict resolution skills. I also enjoin the Deputy Governor to guide his proxies to act in accordance with his piety.”

He added, “It is my sincere hope and that of my other colleagues in government and all well-meaning Edo people, that these rhetorics will be put to an end forthwith to enable this administration finish strong and deliver the dividends of democracy to the greatest number of Edo people over this final twelve (12) months.”

*RE: PUBLIC APOLOGY BY THE EDO STATE DEPUTY GOVERNOR, PHILIP SHAIBU*

I have noted the public apology made by the Deputy Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu. This apology followed an aberrant behaviour that contradicts what the people of Edo State stand for.

Politics / Eid-el-maulud Greetings by UdabaPrince100: 2:10pm On Sep 27, 2023
EID-EL-MAULUD GREETINGS

I celebrate with the Muslim faithful on the occasion of the celebration of the birth of Prophet Mohammed (S.A.W), as we mark this year’s Eid-el-Maulud.

This celebration offers an opportunity for thoughtful reflection as a people and reinforces the need for tolerance and peaceful co-existence.

Despite our religious, tribal, ethnic and political affiliations, the prophet's message of peace and good neighbourliness should motivate us all to work together towards building a strong, united and prosperous Nigeria.

I also urge the Muslim faithful to use the occasion of the celebration to pray for peace and the progress of our dear nation.

As a government, we will continue to make policy decisions that reflect our diversity as a people and sustain the peaceful co-existence of all residents in Edo State.

His Excellency,
Godwin Obaseki
Governor, Edo State

Politics / Our Reforms, Programmes ‘ll Guarantee Brighter Future For Edo’s Next Generation, by UdabaPrince100: 4:55pm On Sep 26, 2023
Our reforms, programmes ‘ll guarantee brighter future for Edo’s next generation, says Obaseki

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his government’s reforms and programmes over the past six years has set the foundation for the rebirth of the State, guaranteeing a better, brighter future for Edo's next generation.

Obaseki, who stated this while briefing journalists, said he is in politics to create wealth and opportunities for the future.

The governor noted, “It has to be about the future. Why we are in politics is to create wealth and opportunities for the future, not for ourselves.

“If people like Awolowo, Enahoro and the rest acted only in self-interest, we would not have gotten the advantage that brought us to where we picked up from. I am a politician who works for the next generation.”

Stressing that the government is leveraging the State’s competitive advantage to drive economic growth and development, the governor stated, “Yet again, we are very fortunate in Edo State. Our land, apart from being strategically located, is also diverse. We have almost everything.

“We have good vegetation that sustains a wide variety of crops which serve as raw materials. We have some of the largest onshore reserves for gas which is an energy source. Outside of Kaduna and Zamfara, we have the largest number of mining licences. We already have the basics for industrialisation. We have agriculture and raw materials for industries; we have energy from gas and we have mineral resources.”

He added, “So, all we need to do is train our human capacity, which is the reason for the emphasis on education. We cannot continue to buy things from around the world, that’s our dilemma today. So, for us in Edo, we see ourselves as the industrial hub. It’s a very deliberate strategy. We want to build our own industrialisation based on our natural resources.”
Business / Edo, GIZ Strengthen Partnership To Enhance Ease Of Doing Business by UdabaPrince100: 6:59pm On Sep 25, 2023
Edo, GIZ strengthen partnership to enhance Ease of Doing Business

As part of reforms to boost Ease of Doing Business climate in Edo State, the State Government has strengthened partnership with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).

Addressing journalists after the meeting with the representatives from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) at the Edo State Investment Promotion Office (ESIPO), in Benin City, the Managing Director of ESIPO, Mr. Kelvin Uwaibi, said the primary objective of the meeting was to evaluate the outcomes of prior collaborations and chart a more robust path forward, aimed at elevating Edo’s standing in the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) ratings.

He noted that GIZ has been a steadfast partner to Edo State over the years, offering invaluable support in the state’s mission to enhance the Ease of Doing Business, adding, “This partnership has yielded noteworthy successes, and the recent meeting provided an opportunity to assess the tangible achievements and strategise for the future.

“One of the top priorities identified during the meeting was the enhancement of EODB for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Both parties were committed to ensuring that these businesses encounter fewer obstacles and experience a more streamlined process.

“A key area of focus was simplifying business-related processes and reducing bureaucratic complexities. Streamlining these procedures can significantly enhance the overall EODB environment.

“Recognising the importance of reducing the cost of doing business, both parties underscored the need to implement measures that make it more affordable for enterprises, particularly small and medium-sized ones.”

Representative of the Head of Component, Policy and Strategy, Mr. Omoware Akinropo, and Access to Finance Policy Advisor, GIZ, Mr. Pearse Akinwande, reiterated GIZ’s unwavering commitment to supporting Edo State in its EoDB initiatives.

Edo, FG inspect Benin-Abraka Road, assure on devt of infrastructure

The Minister of Niger Delta Development, Abubakar Momoh; the Edo State Commissioner for Roads and Bridges, Engr. Ethan Uzamere and the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, at the weekend inspected ongoing construction of the Benin-Abraka Road.

Impressed with the level of work done on the road, the delegation reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the development of critical infrastructure to boost economic growth and development.

Momoh said, “The Benin-Abraka Road is one of the roads under the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). This road was awarded in 2009 and about 15km out of the 88km has been constructed by the Ministry of Niger Delta Development.

“Also, I understand that there was an MoU between the State government and NDDC to complete the remaining parts of the road. I have also been told that the State government has awarded 40.5km out of the 88km, which means about 28km is left uncompleted.

“From the work done so far, I am impressed and hope the rest of the road is completed up to Abraka in Delta State so that the people in this area will make use of the road but if it's not completed up to Abraka the purpose will be defeated.”

He added, “I am happy that the MD of NDDC is here and will take the documents back home to study them and get back to the State government because the project needs to be jointly funded to enable it see the light of the day.”

The Minister, while decrying the poor state of roads across the Country, noted, “Looking at the time lines under this present administration, we should be looking at the next two to three years because we have a lot of roads across the Country and Niger Delta is bad. It’s difficult to access Warri through this route. When coming from Akure today, it was difficult to access Akure through Owan and we had to pass through Ore. That shows that the people from Edo North are completely cut off from Benin City.”

He added, “If the only road we manage through Ondo State is no longer accessible, you know Benin-Auchi road has been cut-off and it shows we are in trouble. We will begin to look at this problem. We have a listening President who will look at this because he is ready to bring development to every part of Nigeria and we believe that by the time we present the report of our findings, these problems will be attended to.”

On his part, Uzamere, while noting the importance of the inspection, stated, “This kind of visit is necessary because, the issue being looked at. The road is for the development of the people. We are here with the Minister and the MD of NDDC to see what is going on so far.”

Between Shaibu’s desperation and Obaseki’s respect for democracy

…as Ondo Assembly begins process to impeach deputy gov

By Christopher Ojekere

News trickled in Wednesday evening that the Ondo State House of Assembly has commenced the process of impeaching the Ondo State Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, a man who held sway for about three months while the governor was away on medical leave, carrying his duties efficiently without so much fuss.

One would wonder his offense for such a hammer at a time when the Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, who has become an aggressor in his desperate bid to become the State’s next governor at all cost, has been going about making trouble, harassing and blackmailing the governor, his principal without any consequences.

Between Shaibu and the Ondo Deputy Governor who really has committed an impeachable offence and what else can a deputy governor do before he is sanctioned?

A deputy Governor who attempted to produce a *parallel speaker in the Edo State House of Assembly, working with the opposition party, so as to undo and impeach his governor.

A deputy governor who attempted to break into the governor’s private residence while his principal was in a private meeting with some stakeholders in the State.

A deputy governor who dragged his governor to court just to embarrass him.

A deputy governor who without respect and regard staged a walk-out in the presence of the governor, his principal and other dignitaries, alongside his aides during a state function.

A deputy governor, who alongside his security aides, attempted to break into the personal office of the governor, his principal even though he was aware that the governor wasn’t in the office.

And in all of these, no one is considering impeaching Shaibu in Edo? What a lucky man have we?

The luxury Shaibu still enjoys – walking about causing troubles as deputy governor of Edo State is just because of Governor Obaseki’s respect for “the* rule of law and democracy.

Hopefully, he doesn’t continue to abuse this privilege while pushing the governor to the brink.

Those whom the gods want to destroy, they first make mad.

Shaibu has gone mad in his desperation to become Edo’s next governor at all cost, no matter whose ox is gored. He has become so dangerous in his desperation and must be reined in before he causes more damage in his inordinate and desperate bid to succeed his principal.

Politics / Subsidy Palliative: Over 1.5 Million People In Edo Benefit From Obaseki’s Free B by UdabaPrince100: 6:29pm On Sep 20, 2023
Subsidy Palliative: Over 1.5 million people in Edo benefit from Obaseki’s Free Bus ride Scheme

Not less than 1,572,000 Edo citizens have benefited from the Free Bus Ride Scheme by Edo State Government, which is part of the palliative programme to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government.

Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Hon. Chris Nehikhare, made this known while addressing journalists at the Ministry’s Conference Room, at the State Secretariat along Sapele Road, Benin City.

Nehikhare said 1,494,000 citizens benefited from the free intra-city bus ride while 33,000 benefited from the free inter-city bus ride, bringing the total beneficiaries from the bus palliative to 1, 527,000 within the first few days of the scheme, which was flagged-off on September 11.

He noted that since the removal of fuel subsidy, the cost of living has gone high and life has become difficult for Nigerians, adding: “The free bus ride initiated by the Obaseki-led administration has reduced the suffering of Edo people. Spending on transportation has reduced.

“This free bus ride has become popular among Edo people. It is helping them save their transport money since the service commenced on the 11th of this month. We have had 1,494,000 passengers within Benin City, while 33,000 have benefited from the inter city. 1,527,000 Edo people have been directly touched by these initiatives.

“We are pleased by the appreciation we have received from Edo people since the programme commenced.”

The Commissioner said the State Government is still collating data of the poorest of the poor in the State to populate its social register, which is also being revalidated to ensure that no one within the designated bracket is left out of it.

He added that the distribution will be devoid of politics as it will go directly to those captured during the data collection exercise.

Politics / 2024 Polls: Edo Central Stakeholders Condemn Shaibu Over Attempt To Blackmail Ob by UdabaPrince100: 7:26pm On Sep 19, 2023
2024 Polls: Edo Central stakeholders condemn Shaibu over attempt to blackmail Obaseki to abandon zoning arrangement

Stakeholders in Edo Central Senatorial District have called on the Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, to exercise restraint and stop the incessant blackmail in a bid to pressure the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, to disregard the senatorial zoning arrangement of the State for the region to produce the next governor of the State.

The stakeholders who spoke during a press conference held at the premises of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Chapter, in Benin City, said the frustration Shaibu is expressing is only a decoy to make it seem as if he is being victimised by Obaseki whereas he is intoxicated by his inordinate ambition to become the next governor of the State.

Speaking on behalf of the Edo Central people, the Convener of Esan Advocates for Good Governance (EAFGG), Comrade Bartholomew Okoudo, charged Edo people not to be deceived by all the tantrums, blackmail, and display of entitlement by the Deputy Governor, which are failed attempts to force the governor to yield to pressure so that he can have his way.

According to him, “The people of Edo Central Senatorial District are calling on the Edo State Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, to exercise restraint and stop the incessant blackmail of the Governor, His Excellency, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, in a bid to pressure the governor to yield to pressure to disregard the senatorial zoning arrangement to produce the next governor of the State.

“His frequent tirade is to get the Governor to endorse his candidacy for the governorship election holding next year. This is the singular reason he is employing different tricks to box the governor into a corner and extract a commitment.

“Shaibu’s attempt to curry public sympathy is aimed at arm-twisting the governor. The frustration he is expressing is only a coy way to make it seem as if he is being victimised, but everyone knows he is intoxicated by his inordinate ambition.

“Shaibu thinks everything must be by force. It is on record that the people of Edo North Senatorial District produced Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, who is also from Etsako West Local Government Area. He served for eight years between 2008 and 2016 before handing over to the incumbent governor, Obaseki, a Benin man, who was produced by the people of Edo South Senatorial District.”

The stakeholders continued: “The lot to produce the next governor according to the zoning arrangement is on the Edo Central Senatorial District, who have never had the opportunity to produce the governor of the State except the short-lived tenure of Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor, between May 2007 and November 2008.

“The shenanigans by Comrade Shaibu aimed at blackmailing the governor in pursuit of his unreasonable and desperate ambition to become the next governor at all cost will not work and must be resisted by all well-meaning Edo people.

“During the administration of Chief Lucky Igbinedion, between 1999 and 2007, the Deputy Governor at the time was Chief Mike Oghiadomhe from Etsako in Edo North Senatorial District. He also served for eight years.

“This was followed by Oshiomhole, also from Etsako West as Governor and now Comrade Philip Shaibu, from Etsako West, who is almost completing eight years tenure as deputy governor.

“How then can he be aspiring to be the next governor? Is this fair and equitable? What is the fate of the other local government areas and senatorial districts in the State?” the stakeholders queried.

Okoudo further noted, “We understand that the Deputy Governor has his right to aspire for any political position in the State and Country, but we urge him to stop these charades to pressure the governor into neglecting the zoning arrangement. His agitation runs against the spirit of fairness and equity.

“From Shaibu running to the Federal High Court in Abuja, asking for a restraining order to stop Governor Obaseki from impeaching him to spreading falsehoods about the Governor preventing him from performing his roles as deputy and causing various scenes at public events and public places, it has all been an engineered charade to make the Governor seem unapproachable.

“The most recent of these is his attempt to force his way into the personal office of the Governor along with his security aides at the Dennis Osadebe Avenue, GRA, Benin City.

“The Deputy Governor who has worked with Governor Obaseki over the past seven years should know him better that no amount of pressure to blackmail him will force the governor to support him in his inordinate quest.”

He charged, “We the people of Edo Central Senatorial District are calling on him to stop this charade and follow the path of peace in the spirit of equity and fairness.

“There is peace and security in Edo and we urge the Deputy Governor not to create the scene that there is no peace in Edo through his actions and desperate moves.”

Politics / Is Shaibu Too Big To Follow Directives From His Principal, The Governor? by UdabaPrince100: 1:55pm On Sep 19, 2023
Is Shaibu too big to follow directives from his principal, the governor?

By Igbafe Alonge

While much raucous has been made from the drama by the Edo Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, over his alleged shutting out from office, a letter has emerged indicating that the deputy governor was, in fact, notified of the relocation of his office last week, specifically on Friday, September 15, 2023.

The letter, which surfaced on Monday, September 18, was addressed to the Deputy Governor and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq. It notified Shaibu that his office accommodation has been relocated to a new office site on No. 7, Dennis Osadebe Avenue. Shaibu would not deny knowledge of this document.

It is, of course, within the right of the Governor to decide where the office of any officer of government should be. The deputy governor is not constitutionally entitled to a particular office accommodation in the state.

If there is memo stating that a new location has been designated as the Deputy Governor’s Office, if indeed he was respectful, he would have showed up for work at his new office.

In the light of the new revelation, one is forced to ask: Is Shaibu too big to follow directives from his principal, the governor?

Why then create a scene, claiming that he has not been informed of the notice to relocate to a new office?

It is clear that the Deputy Governor has no respect for constituted authority.

From the details of the letter that is now out in the public domain, it is obvious that Shaibu was obviously lying in pursuit of his inordinate ambition to succeed the governor, not minding what it would cost him.

The directive to relocate his office was a specific instruction from his principal, the governor and it behoves on the Deputy Governor to follow such an instruction as it is coming from his boss, the constitutionally elected governor of the State.

Does the drama and refusal to move to the new office not show total disregard for the authority of the governor?

It shameful that in defence of disgraceful conduct, Shaibu is resorting to lies.

Does the governor not have the right to administer the state and allocate resources to officials as is expedient in line with his mandate freely given by the people of Edo State?

Does the constitution give the deputy governor the right to disrespect his principal?

These are the questions begging for answers and which speak to the penchant of the deputy governor to disregard and disrespect the governor, all in an attempt to force the governor’s hand to accede to his desire for endorsement to succeed him in the forthcoming governorship election.

Shaibu notified of relocation to new office last week

The Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, was informed of his relocation to a new office last week, fresh details have shown.

A letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie, dated September 15, 2023, and sent to the Office of the Deputy Governor on the same day has emerged.

The deputy governor was last week notified by the letter that his office accommodation had been moved to No. 7, Dennis Osadebe Avenue, GRA.

According to the SSG, "I write to inform you that His Excellency, the Governor has approved the relocation of your office accommodation to No. 7, Dennis Osadebe Avenue, GRA, Benin City.

"You are therefore requested to ensure your compliance in line with Mr. Governor's approval, please."

Shaibu disregards protocol, forces his way into Obaseki's personal office

In what has been described a total disregard for protocol, the Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, on Monday, attempted to force his way into the personal office of the Governor, along with his security aides.

The Deputy Governor arrived at the Office of the Governor, on Dennis Osadebey Avenue, GRA, in the early hours of Monday morning, and tried to confront the governor.

Shaibu was, however, told that the governor was not yet in the Office but he insisted on gaining access into the Governor's personal office.

All entreaties by the security operatives to him to kindly go back and call the governor if he wanted to see his principal were rebuffed. Instead, he kept pushing the gate, causing a scene.

Recall that the Deputy Governor’s Office was relocated to another site some weeks back as a directive was issued for the relocation to a new office located on No. 7, Dennis Osadebey Avenue, in GRA.

Several sources who witnessed the scene said that the Deputy Governor had approached the office with his personal staff in tow and attempted to force the gate open.

A source within the Edo State Government House Protocol Unit, who pleaded anonymity, said: “What we experienced today at one of the gates leading to the Governor’s personal office is completely out of character for an individual of a Deputy Governor's status. The deputy governor and a retinue of security personnel and his personal staff were attempting to force one of the gates leading to the Governor's personal office open even when he was told that the governor was not on sit. He made several calls to different people in Government House about the situation but he was told that the governor was not in the office.”

Another source noted "What we witnessed today was a script by the Deputy Governor. He was more interested in creating a scene because he knew the governor was not yet in the office at the time he arrived at the gate, demanding to see the governor. Despite all entreaties by the protocol people to kindly go back and personally call the governor, he insisted on having an audience with the Governor immediately."

Politics / We’re Undertaking Ambitious Oil Palm Devt Project To Drive Investment In Agric, by UdabaPrince100: 6:59pm On Sep 12, 2023
We’re undertaking ambitious oil palm devt project to drive investment in agric, boost Edo’s economy, says Obaseki

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his government has in the past seven years undertaken an aggressive oil palm development project to drive investment across the entire agricultural value chain and boost the economy of the State.

Obaseki, while speaking to journalists in Benin City, said his administration has been very keen on using oil palm as an agricultural product to attract huge investments, noting that the government has allocated over 70,000 hectares of new lands to investors for oil palm cultivation.

He said, “If you think about this, palm oil is really indigenous to us here. We have seen people come here, collaborate with us, take materials from us and take them back to their country and see how they have used it to transform their economies-countries like Malaysia and Indonesia. Today, you know what Indonesia earns from oil palm.

“Don’t forget that oil palm is the most prolific edible plant in the world. You get more yield than groundnuts and others. For us, that’s the reason why we've been very keen on using oil palm as an agricultural product to attract huge investments. It will be difficult to find somebody who will give us half a billion dollars for cassava. But with oil palm, because of its very nature, it is easy to get investments.”

According to him, “These investments are not only in terms of mechanisation, but skills – agronomic skills and other skills for proper farming practices. These are needed to help you develop your agricultural industry. The reason we have been very aggressive is that if we are able to bring in investment for oil palm, then we have brought in the business and investment to develop the entire agricultural sector. It’s very strategic and deliberate and this is going to impact the economy greatly.”

The governor added, “You know, we have given out up to 70,000 hectares of new lands in addition to what has been cultivated by the two major companies already investing in oil palm in Edo. Assuming for each hectare, you need 50 people to cultivate it, at 70,000 hectares, you already have how many jobs?”

The Obaseki-led administration created the Edo State Oil Palm Programme (ESOPP), targeted at producing, protecting and rehabilitating the oil palm sector by developing the oil palm programme that creates jobs, provides livelihood and contributes to forest management and restoration.

Over 180,000 hectares of land have been set aside to be allocated to investors and investments of more than $500 million have been attracted through this programme. Today, Edo has the largest oil palm plantation programme in Africa, championed by Dufil, Saro Africa and other new entrants into the Edo oil palm industry in addition to the already established ones like Presco and Okomu, among others.

Fuel Subsidy Removal: Obaseki flags off free bus service, recommits to support, well-being of Edo people

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Monday, flagged off the free bus service for passengers on all routes operated by the state-owned Edo City Transport Limited (ECTS) as part of efforts to cushion the impact of the fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government on the people of the State.

The free transport scheme is expected to cover intra-city and intercity routes including Auchi - Igarra - Ibillo–Ososo; Uzebba–Ikhin – Otuo, and Abudu-Ubiaja, Abudu-Urhonigbe and Ewohirin to Ewatto.

Speaking during a formal ceremony for the commencement of the free bus service in ECTS terminal in Benin City, Governor Obaseki, who was represented by the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, said his government remains committed to the wellbeing and support of the people and will sustain efforts to reduce the hardship inflicted on the people by the subsidy removal.

He stated, “We call on all Edo people to use this service effectively and ensure they use it regularly as it benefits all of us. His Excellency takes the welfare of Edo people seriously and this is just one of the many support programmes that this administration has put in place to reduce the challenge, sufferings and cost of living faced by Edo people as a result of the subsidy removal.

“This service has commenced since 6am today September 11th, 2023 but we are declaring the service open today to the glory of God and the service will last for two months in the first instance.”

Speaking on the free bus transportation scheme, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Edo State Transport Authority, Edugie Agbonlahor, said, “We are all aware that the Governor has directed Edo City Transport Service (ECTS) to offer free bus service to all commuters in Edo State travelling within Benin Metropolis and travelling from Benin City to the major cities across the three Senatorial District of the State.”

She further stated, “His Excellency’s thoughtful intervention is as a result of the removal of the fuel subsidy and its negative impact on Nigerians. As at today, transportation cost is over 50 per cent of an average worker’s income and this intervention is to release funds back to the people to enable them take care of other needs like feeding housing, especially the burden of resumption for a new term for pupils across the State.

“This free transportation will return money back to parents to enable them to take care of some other family needs. ECTS before now has been offering free rides to school children and now to all Edo people. It's our hope that we all enjoy this free ride made possible by the governor.”

A Federal Civil Servant, Mr. Ojekwua Kingsley while commending the governor for the initiative, said the free bus scheme will seriously reduce the effect of the hardship brought about by the removal of oil subsidy by the federal government.

According to him, “We are looking forward to more palliatives from Mr. Governor and commend him for this great move to reduce the pain that citizens are facing.”

At the Ikpoba Hill Bus Terminal where passengers board ECTS bus to Edo North, Mr. Edohor David who is travelling to Auchi hailed the governor, noting, “This bus is going to Edo North, Auchi, Igarra, Ososo, Ibilo and all the passengers entered for free. We have started enjoying the palliative; all thanks to the governor.”

Obaseki mourns passing of Akintola Williams, says it’s end of an era for accounting profession in Nigeria

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has mourned the passing of elder statesman and doyen of accounting in Nigeria, Chief Akintola Williams, who died aged 104 years.

In a statement, the governor said: “I am immensely saddened by the news of the passing of our elder statesman, an economic titan and the doyen of the accounting profession in Nigeria, Chief Akintola Williams.

“Akintola Williams lived a long and fulfilled life, having made his mark as not only the first Nigerian to qualify as a chartered accountant but also led the envious legacy as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished professionals in the corporate world.

“A rare breed, Chief Williams played a key role as a nationalist, as he was a contemporary of key figures in Nigeria’s historical development, including Chief Obafemi Awolowo, fighting together for the independence of our dear nation and keeping on with the drive to see Nigeria lead the continent on different fronts.

“He set up the first accounting firm in Africa, Akintola Williams & Co., in 1952 upon qualifying as the first Nigerian chartered accountant and expanded to other countries of the world.

The governor continued: “Chief Williams, perhaps, made some of the most consequential contributions to the development of the Nigerian economy through his interventions in the setting up of the Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).

“He was upright, intelligent and cosmopolitan, making enormous impact in the business community and in promoting probity and good governance.

“The business community has indeed lost a beacon and compass who provided light and direction to the Nigerian state.”

The governor further noted, “He will be remembered for his knack for excellence, his undying quest for truth and justice and an abiding commitment to the development of our dear nation.

“I commiserate with Seni, the Williams' family, friends and associates and pray that God will grant all the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. Adieu.”

NACCIMA hails Obaseki for reforms to transform Edo into Nigeria's petrochemical hub

...says Obaseki driving industrialization with two operational modular refineries, others

The National President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA), Dele Kelvin Oye Esq., has lauded the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki for his administration's progressive economic reforms which have transformed the State into Nigeria’s petrochemical hub with two operational modular refineries.

The two modular refineries in the state have continued to wax strong, with both now having a standing order of 300,000 barrels of crude from the Oza oil field.

Decklar Resources Inc and its co-venturer Millenium Oil & Gas Company Limited, which operate the Oza oil field, confirmed that aside from the 200,000 barrels of crude ordered by the Edo Refinery and Petrochemical Company Limited, Duport Midstream Company Limited has placed an order of 100,000 barrels of crude from the field. The products from the modular refineries in Edo State include diesel, low-pour fuel, and naphtha.

In a statement on Monday, the NACCIMA boss said Edo State has also been experiencing an influx of investments into various sectors of the State’s economy, which is a testament to the favourable business environment created by Governor Obaseki.

Oye said, “The Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) has lauded the progressive economic reforms introduced by Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State. The initiatives aimed at transforming the state into a petrochemical hub have yielded positive results, with the two modular refineries in the state making standing orders of 300,000 barrels of crude from the Oza oil field. This is in addition to the 100,000 barrels ordered by Duport Midstream Company Limited.

“The products from these modular refineries include diesel, low-pour fuel, and naphtha, which provide an avenue for revenue generation for the state.”

In a statement by the Chief Executive Officer of Decklar Resources, Sanmi Fumuyide, he disclosed that trucking of crude oil from the Oza Oil Field to the Edo Refinery and Petrochemicals Company Limited facility has reached a cumulative volume of over 55,000 bbls.

This is in line with Governor Obaseki's promise to drive economic growth in the state through his industrialisation policy.”

He noted, “Furthermore, Edo State has also been experiencing an influx of investments into various sectors of the economy, which is a testament to the favourable business environment created by Governor Obaseki. The governor's efforts towards improving infrastructure, such as the road networks, have also attracted private sector participation in the state.”

Oye added, “NACCIMA commends Governor Godwin Obaseki for his people-oriented and innovative policies that have resulted in a surge of economic growth in Edo State. The association urges other state governors to emulate the positive strides of Governor Obaseki and implement policies that will create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.”

“A rare breed nationalist, Chief Williams was perhaps one of the few Nigerian professionals who attained continental acclaim in pre-independent Nigeria, crossed over to the digital age and kept on with the changes of the times.”

The governor added: “He set up the first accounting firm in Africa, Akintola Williams & Co., in 1952 upon qualifying as the first Nigerian chartered accountant and expanded to other countries of the world. He stood for excellence as a professional, a trait that had kept him going ever since.

Mrs. Mary, Edokpolor a mother of three, applauded the governor for his empathetic response to the challenges faced by Edo State residents, describing the policy as a lifeline to her family.

According to her, “I can’t thank Governor Godwin Obaseki enough for this free transportation initiative. It's a lifeline for my family and many others who are faced with hardship because of the fuel subsidy removal. His compassion and love for Edo people is evident in this act, and we're truly grateful. With the money saved on transportation, we can now allocate more resources to our daily economic activities, especially feeding thereby ensuring better welfare for our children.”

On her part, Joy Eromosele, a Benin-based banker said, “Governor Obaseki’s decision to provide free transport services is nothing short of visionary. It shows his deep commitment to the wellbeing and welfare of Edo people. He has always put the people at the forefront of his government’s decisions and policies and we're fortunate to have a leader who understands our needs and takes action.

Obaseki’s Reforms: Duport Refinery orders 100,000 barrels of crude oil from Oza oil field

...as Edo Refinery receives 55,000 barrels so far

In the wake of reforms by Governor Godwin Obaseki to transform the state into a petrochemical hub, the two modular refineries in the state have continued to wax strong, with both now having a standing order of 300,000 barrels of crude from the Oza oil field.

Decklar Resources Inc and its co-venturer Millenium Oil & Gas Company Limited, which operated the Oza oil field, confirmed that aside from the 200,000 barrels of crude ordered by the Edo Refinery and Petrochemical Company Limited, Duport Midstream Company Limited has placed an order of 100,000 barrels of crude from the field.

The products from the modular refineries in Edo State include diesel, low pour fuel and naphtha.

In a statement, Chief Executive Officer of Decklar Resources Inc., Sanmi Fumuyide, said trucking of crude oil from the Oza Oil Field to the Edo Refinery and Petrochemicals Company Limited (“ERPC”) facility in Edo State, Nigeria has reached a cumulative volume of over 55,000 bbls, with 10,000 bbls delivered in 2022 under the initial sale and purchase agreement and over 45,000 bbls delivered so far in 2023.

“Deliveries are continuing under the 200,000 bbls contract. The terms of the 200,000 bbls agreement include an invoicing and payment cycle that is triggered as each 5,000 bbls batch is delivered and offloaded at the Edo refinery,'' he disclosed.

He added that delivery of crude oil has continued from the Oza Oil Field to the Duport Midstream Company Limited (“DMCL”) refinery and just under 13,000 bbls have been delivered to date.

He said: “DMCL has agreed to purchase up to 100,000 bbls over the next 12 months. The Company has experienced some delays obtaining permits to truck crude to the ERPC and DMCL refineries, but anticipates that with new systems recently implemented by the government regulatory agencies future permits will be obtained and issued in a more timely and efficient manner.”
Education / Int’l Literacy Day: We’re Tackling Foundational Illiteracy, Unlocking Educationa by UdabaPrince100: 5:25pm On Sep 08, 2023
Int’l Literacy Day: We’re tackling foundational illiteracy, unlocking educational potential of Edo children, says Obaseki

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his government is tackling foundational illiteracy, improving learning outcomes and harnessing the educational potential of children in the State through the State’s Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) programme and other reforms in the State’s education sector.

The governor said this in commemoration of the 2023 International Literacy Day (ILD) marked by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and other sister agencies, with the theme, “Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies.”

The governor, who noted the transformative role of education and literacy in the advancement and growth of society, reassured that his government will continue to deepen ongoing reforms in the state’s education sector, by ensuring the provision of the right infrastructure, technology and manpower to tackle learning deficit and facilitate improved access to quality education across the State.

According to Obaseki, this year’s celebration emphasises the role that literacy plays in achieving sustainable development and building more inclusive, peaceful and just societies. This is as he reiterates the need to strengthen efforts at achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) on education and lifelong learning.

“As a government, we recognise the pivotal role that education and literacy play in societal advancement and this year’s International Literacy Day celebration provides a fine platform to review efforts and strengthen collaborations aimed at tackling learning poverty at all levels and ensuring improved access to quality education across board, guaranteeing that more children are adequately equipped with the skills, knowledge and tools to effectively contribute their quotas to societal development,” the governor said.

Obaseki, who stated that the government is focusing on basic education and restoring quality into its basic educational system, noted that children in primary schools in Edo State today now learn three times more than they used to learn with the old pedagogy.

He said the World Bank and other national and international agencies and organisations acknowledged this consequential progress in addressing Foundational Literacy and Numeracy defects in Edo students.

He stated, “We have sustained investment in the education sector over the past seven years, tackling foundational illiteracy, improving learning outcomes and harnessing the educational potential of children through the State’s Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) programme and other reforms in the State’s education sector.

“Edo today is ranked as one of the five nationals and sub-nationals in the world leading the charge in tackling learning poverty. We have the lowest number of out-of-school children in Nigeria on account of our reforms.”

The governor further noted that his government introduced and recruited teachers under the EdoStar Teaching Fellows Programme to ensure quality teaching and learning in public schools in the State, stressing, “We are deepening reforms in the state’s education sector, building the capacity of our teachers to domesticate the EdoBEST model, and upgrading physical infrastructure across schools in the State.”

In a statement, the group Convener, Comrade Roy Oribhabor, said “After critical evaluation of the just concluded Local Government election in Edo State, we humbly appreciate Edo people who came out to perform their civic responsibilities, the turnout was impressive, therefore, Edo people has once again demonstrated their political sophistication and understanding, the election was peaceful where we monitored based from our feedback mechanism.

“We commend the chairman of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission for a job well done despite the late arrival of materials in some polling units. This was not enough to discredit the entire process, hence, we salute the leadership and management accordingly.”

He continued: “We hereby congratulate the winners and also, call on those who think otherwise to approach a court of competent jurisdiction to seek redress rather than embarking on a journey of self-help. In Democracy, the majority will always have their way while the minority will have their say.

Be a beacon of light, support our efforts to reshape Edo, Obaseki urges new Permanent Secretaries

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has charged the newly sworn-in Permanent Secretaries in the State’s public and civil service to be a beacon of light and effectively contribute their quota in reshaping the State and placing it on the path of sustainable economic growth and prosperity.

The governor gave the charge when he swore in eight permanent secretaries (five females and three male) at the Government House, Benin City.

He said, “We have hired a lot of younger people into the Public/Civil Service of Edo State and they are looking up to you in terms of work ethics and productivity and beyond being made a PS today, you have now become a beacon of light to the new generation of Public/Civil servants that are going to reshape Edo State.

“You have earned your position by virtue of merit. I am sure you didn’t give anybody money and no one called me to influence your appointment. Interestingly, those I called on to assist did not even make the cutoff mark in the exams. Your appointment is mainly based on merit and with this understanding, please make sure you continue on that part, at least, till I leave office I can guarantee that as long as you work hard, you will remain a Permanent Secretary in Edo State.”

Obaseki continued: “The process of evaluation is a continuous process as some persons have to be dropped off as PS because they didn't perform during the last evaluation. The fact that you have been appointed PS is not a job for life, if you don’t meet our annual review of service, you may be asked to leave for those who are ready to work harder. This elevation needs to be kept and the only way to keep it is to work hard every day you come to work.

“It’s not a coincidence that appointment of senior civil servants is now based on merit because as an administration, we will continue to invest in you not only in terms of your work environment but try to improve and ensure it’s the best in the Country.

“We are working to see how we can improve your condition of service in Edo State; nothing stops us from giving you better conditions of service, including better pay or higher salaries. As a government, we are looking at that but you have to help us by ensuring you improve on productivity so that the government can raise more revenue to meet its revenue obligations so that you also will benefit.

“All of you have worked very hard to get to this position you are today. I personally supervised the process where you have to go through two rigorous examinations with me. Many more passed the exams and had to meet with me but only those sworn in today passed the interview. You have shown competence and capacity to use technology.”

Governor Obaseki said the world has gone digital and Edo State has to follow suit to remain relevant globally.

He stated, “We will continue to ensure that we are innovative in the way we deliver services to Edo people. The world has gone digital and Edo State can't be an exception. For Edo State to be competitive globally, we have to go digital. If you can't go digital, if you cannot work with technology, it will be difficult for you to operate in Edo State Civil Service.”

On the transition to paperless government, the governor expressed delight that 90 percent of Edo State Civil/Public Servants are using the e-gov platform.

According to him, “When I received the report of the cut-off to the new EGOV platform, I was quite impressed as over 90 percent of our civil servants are now using the EGOV platform. That has put pressure on me to approve your memos and files.

“Please take this job as your own business; for the benefit of Edo and its future, it is worth it. We have shown dedication today as we prepare your retirement benefits six months before you retire. We are paying pension, and working hard to pay back 35 years of unpaid gratuity. The moment we clear all outstanding gratuities, we would consider and look at the compensation package for civil servants in the State.

“Training and retraining is a must that is why JOOPSA is set up to improve your skills and output at work. We will not promote Civil/Public Servants in Edo State without evidence of work and that they have gone through training. Nothing like automatic promotion anymore in Edo State. You must work hard, and deliver as at when due for you to be promoted. You can be promoted if you do exceptionally.

“You are now the symbol of the new Edo Permanent Secretaries as you are the first set of PS we appointed since we moved to EGOV and you can describe yourself as digital PS.”

Obaseki added, “Congratulations to our newly appointed PS on attaining the peak of their professional career in the Civil/Public service and it's a thing to be proud of. This is the culmination of the process you started many years ago and your meritorious services have brought you to this point.”

Responding on behalf of the new Permanent Secretaries, the PS of the Edo Ministry of Health, Stanley Osaruyi Ehiarimwian, thanked the governor for finding them worthy of the appointment, adding, “We will do our best to ensure improved productivity, efficiency and effectiveness in the service as we will collaborate to make Edo great again.”

Education / Public Primary, Junior Secondary Schools Return To 5-day Week As Edo Schools Res by UdabaPrince100: 4:38pm On Sep 04, 2023
Public primary, junior secondary schools return to 5-day week as Edo schools resume Sept 11

The Edo State Universal Basic Education (SUBEB) Chairman, Mrs. Ozavize Salami, has said public primary and junior secondary schools across Edo State will return to 5-day school week as school resumes for academic activities on Monday, 11 September 2023.

In a statement, the Edo SUBEB Chairman said all public primary and junior secondary schools will commence in-class learning beginning from the first day of resumption.

According to her: “In line with the academic calendar released by the State Ministry of Education for the 2023-2024 academic session, all public primary and junior secondary schools are to commence in-class learning beginning from the first day of school as students resume on Monday, 11, September 2023.

“As part of efforts by the State Government to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal on citizens, SUBEB had in June 2023 implemented a hybrid school programme that combined three days in-class learning, with two days remote learning. This was possible because of the State’s sustained investment in the EdoBEST@Home programme, which has proven valuable in disruptive times.

“The two days remote learning was further strengthened by the use of individual homework books, made available to all basic education students by the Executive Governor as part of the EdoBEST programme, and was supported by an elaborate monitoring and evaluation system manned by trained field officers.”

Salami further noted that the return to a five day in-classroom learning week in the new session would restore the required teacher-pupil contact time, regularise in-person support for pupils as they learn and ultimately lead to improved learning outcomes as modalities have been put in place to ensure a smooth transition back to full in-person learning.

“Last term, we operated the three-day learning week as directed by His Excellency, Governor Godwin Obaseki, as a relief measure for our teachers and education sector leaders. However, from this term, we will be reverting to the five-day school week. We also want parents and guardians to know that with the restoration of the 5-day school week, the closing time for both primary and junior secondary schools also reverts to 2.45 pm,” she said.

She continued, “in line with accelerating foundational literacy and numeracy, the EdoBEST programme would be implementing a new strategic and well-thought out intervention programme for all children identified as lagging behind in expected learning outcomes based on their performance in the last academic session. These identified pupils would be administered a baseline test to ascertain their competency levels for the appropriate intervention placement.

“Over the course of the new term, a total of over 400 new classrooms, over 9,360 pieces of student and teacher furniture, at least 174 toilets, 41 water projects and 14,850 meters of fencing would be delivered across 336 schools and directly impacting over 72,000 pupils.

Politics / Throw In Everything To Serve Our People, Obaseki Charges Newly Sworn-in Edo Coun by UdabaPrince100: 4:21pm On Sep 04, 2023
Throw in everything to serve our people, Obaseki charges newly sworn-in Edo council chairmen

…urges on creativity, innovation to drive devt at grassroots

...hails Edo people, assures sustained devt no matter distraction

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has charged the 18 newly sworn-in local council executives to throw in everything they have to serve Edo people.

Obaseki gave the charge during the swearing in of the council officials, including the chairmen and councillors at the Government House, in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

The council excos were elected on Saturday, September 2, 2023, after a keenly contested local government election that was held across the State’s 18 local government areas, with the ruling party, People Democratic Party (PDP) the chairmanship of the 18LGAs, including those of the councillors.

The governor said he is glad with the quality of the people his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has produced and who have now been elected to serve the people at the grassroots.

He said, “I have worked with every one of them here and know their capacity because I have had assignments for them and know how they delivered on it. I have no doubt in my mind that they have the capacity and what it takes to take the State to where it should be.

“You will all agree with me that local government is perhaps one of the foundations on which our democracy rests. You all saw on Saturday that every polling unit where people voted were residents, so local government is the foundation where our democracy rests, and therefore this very tier of government must be strengthened.

“Gone are the days where we just elect people who can barely read or write to become local government chairmen. I am glad we have amongst you people who have PhDs, and Medical Doctors, among others. So, you possess the requisite backgrounds and experiences you have gathered in the course of life. I believe we have the core of men and women who are properly prepared to manage our local government going forward.”

The governor continued: “Therefore, this mandate requires that you throw in everything that you have and is required to make a difference, as you have the qualification, experience, and know-how; you now must show innovation. As a government, we are moving Edo into the Fourth Industrial era.

“We are connecting all the local government areas in the State with fibre optics connections, we are moving the government to a digital platform and I am sure you will see the advantage of moving your people and the local government administration to catch up with what the State is doing.”

Obaseki urged the chairmen to be creative and focus on the key policies and programmes of the government to drive all-around development at the grassroots.

He said that education is a key priority, urging the new Council Chairmen to help strengthen the achievement of this administration in the education sector.

He noted, “A lot of innovation has taken place in education in the local government areas as we expect you to support our system.

“We are redesigning our secondary education system and have selected a pilot of about 54 schools to start the digital secondary education from next quarter where our students are going to use computers alone at the secondary level. We need your support as council chairmen as it's without Federal Government support.

“We would also collaborate with you in the area of the environment as we have done so much in the last seven years but are not proud in the area of sanitation. I urge you to make the area of sanitation a priority as the environment is a big issue around the world today as floods are being experienced due to our neglect.”

He added, “The outcome of the process that brought you to office has been outstanding as I campaigned with all of you around the local government areas and I am not surprised that you won but what amazed me is the love and support, which our people have for our party. Please, don't let them down as they made it possible for you to be sworn in today, so make them your priority.”

The governor reassured, “I thank the people of Edo State as you made history again. You have shown that you believe in us and will always be there for us. I want to recommit ourselves as an administration that no matter the distraction, or obstacle thrown on our way, you will always be our priority as we put in everything we have to make Edo great again.”

Responding on behalf of other Chairmen, Hon. Tajudeen Alade Suleman, expressed gratitude to the governor and people of Edo State for the opportunity to serve the people of the State.

He noted, “We reassure you that we will not fail you and the people of Edo State. We would walk round the clock to deliver the dividends of democracy to our people as we hit the ground running, taking advantage of the platform created for us. We will collaborate with you to make Edo the pride of the nation. You have done everything possible for the party to be sustained in Edo State, come 2024 you will produce your successor, and your successor will continue from where you stopped.”

…holds Thanksgiving service

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the discipline and humility inculcated in him and his siblings have kept the family moving 15 years after the death of their father and patriarch of the Obaseki's family, the late Pa Roland Oni Obaseki.

The governor said this while addressing the parishioners at the Diocese of Benin (Anglican Communion), St. Peter’s Anglican Church during the 15th memorial thanksgiving service of his late father and the 2023 Juvenile Harvest Thanksgiving, with the theme, “Harvest of total recovery.”

He said, “Our father was a very active member of this Church. This is our family church. I am glad the Church is preparing another generation of very devoted Anglicans as this is how we were brought up and I am happy that the tradition is continuing.

“For the family, discipline and humility have been our watchword since our patriarch departed. Discipline and humility in all we do, no matter how successful we are in life. Know you are human and responsible to somebody above you which is God Almighty. The keyword for our successes is discipline and humility.”

Reassuring support for the Church, the governor said, “We will continue to support the Church as a family. I hear there are projects and as usual, we will play our roles and give to the Church as much as we can to enable parishioners who worship here to find it amiable to seek succour from the Lord. Thank you all for the support. I encourage the children to do more as we will continue to support them in their projects.”

Commiserating with the Church over the passing of the wife of the Bishop, Obaseki noted, “Let us at this point express our condolences to our Bishop and the Church for the unfortunate bereavement of our Bishop. May the soul of our mother rest in peace.”

Obaseki says outcome of LG polls reaffirms PDP dominance in Edo

...result reflects people’s wish, says gov

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the performance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Saturday’s local government election in the State shows the party’s dominance, noting that the outcome of the election is a reflection of the wish of the majority of Edo people.

Obaseki spoke to journalists at the Diocese of Benin (Anglican Communion), St. Peter's Anglican Church, during the 15th memorial thanksgiving service of his father, late Pa Roland Oni Obaseki

The governor was in the company of the Secretary to Edo State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq. and Oredo Local Government chairman-elect, Dr. Tom Obaseki, among other top government functionaries.

The governor, who was elated over the outcome of the local government election in the State, said Edo people are democratically mature as there was no single violence recorded during the electioneering process.

He said, “We have a situation room where we monitored the election process across the State and want to thank the people. You can see that we are democratically mature in Edo State, in terms of the way the election was conducted.

“I was surprised at the diligence of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC). I went round and saw the number of polling units mounted by EDSIEC and the various electoral officers in the three metropolitan local government areas and it was quite impressive. The turnout was fair as expected and it shows that we can conduct elections without disrupting economic and social activities.

“The people voted and went about their various activities for the weekend. Overall, I believe we have done well. It was a free and fair election. The mass participation and dominance of PDP as a party in the State was clearly exhibited in this election.”

Obaseki further noted, “I have not seen an election that has not been challenged even the one in America was challenged. That is why provisions are made in the law and in the process; for tribunals to review and adjudicate on cases and complaints from contestants.

“Overall, the evidence is overwhelming as PDP campaigned in this LG election as if it was a major national election. I went with them around the 18 local government areas of the State and Councillors campaigned vigorously across various wards across the State but I didn't see too much of the opposition parties and I am not surprised at the results from the election.”

He added, “There was no violence and this shows that the election result is a reflection of the wish of the Edo people.”
