The Rector of Edo State Polytechnic Usen, Engr. Omoruyi Sylvester, has said that the roll-out of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), multi-million-naira Wireless Internet project in the Polytechnic has improved teaching and research in the institution.

Engr. Omoruyi, who disclosed this while addressing journalists, noted that expanding internet in the institution has increased its capacity to offer Open Distance Flexible Learning Programmes.

He said “Edo State Polytechnic was among the six high institutions in the south-south geo-political zone that benefited from the Wireless Internet Cloud (WIC) project of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), under the Advance Digital Appreciation Programme for Tertiary Institutions (ADAPTI).

The Rector expressed appreciation to Governor Godwin Obaseki for his continuous effort in providing an enabling environment at the institution to attract grants and support from organisations and partners within and outside the state.

NCC’s Wireless Internet Could project in Edo State Polytechnic includes the installation of Internet CPE 20/20Mbps bandwidth via Fibre or Point-to-Point ISP radio; dual-radio PRO Access Point/Dual-Band MU-MIMO Wireless Access Point/Dual band Wi-Fi Gigabit Access point and provision of 5.5 KVA generator, and 5KVA network integrated UPS to sever as an alternative source of power supply.

He added: “With the Wireless Internet project, we are able to implement the new directives of the government for internet-enabled work processes. The facility also facilitates the implementation of the Open Distance Flexible Learning system in the school.”

The WIC delivers 20 megabytes per second (mbps) internet speed across the polytechnic’s campus with key facilities installed in strategic locations which include the administrative block, ICT centre and the institution’s Library.

Benin Port: Bidders inspect project site to assess condition of support facilities

… ‘Port designed with RoRo facilities, will boost agro export’

In line with efforts by the Edo State Government to fast-track the development of the Benin Port, bidders for the project have visited and inspected the confluence of the Benin River and Osse River, to assess the site conditions and available facilities to support the port.

During the visit, the Project Director, Benin Port, Dr. Joe Aigboduwa, who led representatives of the host communities and the Edo State Government officials to the site, said the visit by the bidders is in response to the issued Request for Proposals (RFP) and in continuation of the certified Federal Government procurement process.

He said, “In response to the issued Request for Proposals (RFP) and in continuation of the Federal Government approved procurement process under Public-Private Partnership, the internationally pre-qualified bidders for the Benin Port Project have conducted site visits to the project location.”

According to him, “The 2-day exercise entailed a visit by boat to the foreshores of the site at the confluence of Benin River and Osse River on Tuesday 13th June 2023, and a visit by road to the proposed Benin Port dual carriageway Access Road, through Ekehuan Road on Wednesday 14th June 2023.

“The visit afforded bidders the opportunity of physical assessment of the site conditions and the available facilities. They expressed satisfaction with what we have on the ground.”

He noted: “The team comprises the Bidders, the Transaction Advisers (CPCS Transcom, Canada), representatives of the host communities, and Edo State Government officials.

Aigboduwa said, “Bids are due for submission in Abuja by 30th June 2023, following which there would be an evaluation exercise by the Ministerial Project Delivery Team (PDT) under the Chairmanship of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA). Other members of the PDT include the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Federal Ministry of Finance, Federal Ministry of Justice, Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE), the Transaction Advisers, and Edo State Government.

He said, “The Benin Port Project is designed to be a unique agro-based Port in Nigeria that encompasses a complete smart Port Community Complex for industrial processing and export of agricultural produce and other goods, with independent clean and renewable energy installations.

“The container and multipurpose terminals of the port would also have RoRo facilities to enable direct importation of vehicles for the thriving automobile industry in Edo State, among others. This legacy project of His Excellency Governor Godwin Obaseki is expected to create massive employment and business opportunities in transforming the economy of Edo State and Nigeria.”

Politics / Father’s Day: Obaseki Hails Sacrifices, Roles In Shaping Family, Society by UdabaPrince100: 12:33pm On Jun 18, 2023
Father’s Day: Obaseki hails sacrifices, roles in shaping family, society

…assures better economic opportunities to meet up responsibilities amid current economic realities

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has hailed fathers for their sacrifices and roles in maintaining the unity of the family unit and contributing to the development of society.

He reassured that the government will continue to ensure reforms and programmes to open up more economic opportunities so that fathers can satisfactorily meet up to their responsibilities amid the current economic realities.

The governor, who said this in commemoration of Fathers’ Day, maintained that men play critical roles in homes, workplaces and society and deserve praise for their indispensable role in shaping families and society.

According to him, “Today, we celebrate the indispensable role fathers play in our families and their invaluable contributions to the development and progress of our society. Fathers are not only providers but also nurturers, mentors, and pillars of strength.

“They ensure a harmonious and loving atmosphere within the home, fostering unity, understanding, and mutual respect among family members. The guidance, love, and support of the father shape the character and future of our children, instilling in them values that will contribute to a progressive and prosperous society.”

He added, “In Edo State, we are blessed with fathers who have sired children and raised them up to effectively represent the state nationally and in the Diaspora. Today, we can boast of Edolites who are doing well globally in all spheres of life.”

The governor further noted, “As a government, we are well aware of the economic challenges faced by families in recent times, particularly due to the increase in the prices of goods and services following the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government. We understand the impact this has on your daily lives, knowing that providing for your families is a top priority for you, and are committed to easing the burden you face at this very challenging time.

"While we are intensifying efforts to mitigate the impact of this tough policy on families and ensure that your hard-earned income stretches further, we will sustain reforms and programmes to open up more economic opportunities so that you can satisfactorily meet up to your responsibilities amid the current economic realities.”

Edo partners NCDMB on devt of Benin Enterprise Park

says project will transform Edo’s economic fortunes

The Edo State Government has assured of the realization of the Benin Enterprise Park project, noting that on completion, the project will boost economic activities in the State and transform its fortunes.

The Special Adviser to the Edo State Governor on Strategy, Policy, Planning and Performance Management, Sarah Esangbedo Ajose-Ajogun said this while addressing journalists after a meeting with partners on the project.

She said the government is partnering with the Nigeria Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) as investors for the project.

Ajose-Ajogun noted, “The Benin Enterprise Park Project is one of our priority projects in Edo State. This workshop has become necessary because we are at the point where we are kicking off the execution of the development of the project.

“We have partnered with the Nigeria Content Development Monitoring Board (NCDMB) to go into execution as our investors. We are breaking down this big project into manageable sizes so that we can begin to schedule what is required for NCDMB to mobilize and commence construction and implementation at the project site.”

According to her, the workshop is to enable effective planning on the marketing activities as more investors are required to go into the execution of the project.

She added, “Phase one of this project, which is 200 hectares of land, has been earmarked for development and this workshop is on how to develop the 200 hectares, get the investors into the park, and ensure that the Benin Enterprise Park can become a reality.

“The partners have also discussed several strategies which should be put in place for sustainability and success. This is one project that will change the economic trajectory and economic outlook of Edo State.

“The project brings in a lot of economic benefits and the value is what we have been working with experts to enable us to develop a roadmap and multiyear plan to enable us to execute and derive the benefits from the programme.”

On his part, the Managing Director of Edo State Public Building and Maintenance Agency, Engr. Austin Osaretin Osakwe said that the workshop is to review the design and cost implications of developing the Benin Enterprise Park.

He noted, “The Benin Enterprise Park combines infrastructural, commercial, and residential zones in about 1,000 hectares of land. There will be uninterrupted power supply, internet connectivity, C-WAY treatment plant, water reticulation and well laid out routes, and other facilities that will attract other world-class investors into Edo State.”

Health / Obaseki Recommits To Health, Welfare Of Elderly, Urges More Action To Protect by UdabaPrince100: 5:47pm On Jun 15, 2023
Obaseki recommits to health, welfare of elderly, urges more action to protect aged persons from abuse

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has hailed elderly persons in the state for their invaluable contributions to the growth and development of the State, reassuring that his government will sustain reforms and programmes to guarantee the health and wellbeing of the senior citizens.

Obaseki, in a statement to commemorate this year’s World Elder Abuse Awareness Day marked by the United Nations and its sister agencies, urged for greater action to protect the elderly, ensuring better laws and policies to safeguard them from abuse, neglect and exploitation.

The theme of the 2023 celebration is “Addressing Gender-Based Violence in Older Age Policy, Law and Evidence-based Responses,” and draws attention to the need to prioritize efforts to prevent and respond to abuse of older persons and contribute to improving their health, well-being and dignity.

Noting that this year’s theme resonates deeply with the government’s commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment for aged persons in the State, Obaseki called for more action to sustain the global effort to protect the elderly population, including strengthening the legal framework and mechanisms as well as increasing partnerships, among others.

According to Obaseki, “Our elderly citizens have contributed significantly to the growth and development of our society. They have toiled and sacrificed to build the foundation upon which our state thrives today. It is therefore our responsibility to ensure that they age gracefully, free from any form of harm, abuse, or mistreatment.

“This is why we have continued to prioritize the elderly in our plans to develop our dear State and improve the lives of our people, ensuring policies and programmes to guarantee their health, well-being and dignity.”

He added, “We have ensured prompt and regular payment of pensions to our senior citizens, ending the dark days when elderly persons in the State had to queue under the sun daily lamenting over unpaid pensions and arrears.

“We are guaranteeing unlimited access to affordable and quality healthcare delivery to our elderly population through the Edo State Health Insurance Scheme, among other programmes and projects undertaken by the government to cater and protect our elderly population, ensuring that they live a fulfilling life, free from fear, discrimination, and abuse. The contributory pension scheme has been mainstreamed to ensure that workers do not suffer abuse in old age as an efficient system has been set up to take care of their needs.”
Politics / Obaseki Swears In 15 New Commissioners, Assures On Devt Of Benin Port, Enterpris by UdabaPrince100: 5:36pm On Jun 13, 2023
Obaseki swears in 15 new commissioners, assures on devt of Benin Port, Enterprise Park, other legacy projects

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Tuesday, inaugurated 15 commissioners as members of the Edo State Executive Council (EXCO), charging them to sustain efforts by the government to improve the livelihood of the people and ensure economic prosperity for the State.

The Commissioners include Ethan Osaze Uzamere, Christopher Osaretin Nehikhare, Monday Osaigbovo, Dr. Joan Osa-Oviawe, Isoken Omo, Stephen Ehikhioya Idehenre, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, Patrick Uanseru, and Samuel Alli (Dr.).

Others are Adaze Aguele-Kalu, Kingsley Uwagbale, Uyi Oduwa Malaka, Joshua Omokhodion, Ojiefoh Enaholo Donatus and Christabel Omo Ekwu.

The governor, during the inauguration at the Government House in Benin City, assured on the development of the Benin Port, the Enterprise Park and other projects to drive industrial growth and boost the state’s economy.

He said, “We have had an excellent team since we started our administration six years ago. The team has helped us to actualise our vision of transforming Edo State to where it should be. Any transformation is a work in progress and doesn’t end.

“I thank all members of the Edo State Executive Council in the last six years who have worked closely with me to define and reshape the new Edo we have now. Hard work and your diligence have brought us this far.”

The governor continued: "We are inaugurating today what we call the finishing team which is made up of men and women of high standing in their careers and communities as they take over the battle, ensuring the administration finishes strong.

“This team is coming to consolidate on the excellent work done so far to make Edo great again. We are all aware of the developmental strides this administration has made since coming into office in the area of law and order - harassment of traders in various markets has ended in the State, creating room for businesses to thrive.”

Speaking on reforms by his administration to drive economic growth, Obaseki said, “The President just signed an electricity bill allowing States to generate and distribute electricity within their States. This was made possible through our own Ossiomo Power Plant in the State. People are now coming into the State to do business because the State is safe.

“Our various reforms have placed us on the path of progress which we must sustain as this is the least expected of the people of Edo State. We need to reconnect with our people letting them know what we have done over the last six years so that together we can sustain what we have started to enable it last as the expectation is high.”

Charging the new Commissioners to sustain the developmental strides across the State, he charged, “We would not be distracted in the next 18 months as we have a lot to finish in various sectors.

“We have more to do in the areas of providing micro finance to our women to trade, deploying more security cameras across the State, deploying fibres and connecting all our local governments, schools and healthcare centers in the State. This new EXCO is charged with the task of developing various successes recorded in the education sector.

“We are still working on disarticulating junior secondary schools from senior secondary schools. We must ensure that by the time our children are leaving junior secondary school, they must have work. We must complete all the work we have started in our colleges of education and agriculture as well as polytechnics and build functional manpower with less emphasis on certificates.

On the development of the Benin Port and Enterprise Park projects, the governor noted, "Our Benin Enterprise Park must take off as the local content board has taken 50 hectares of the park while we also need to build 100 hectares as there is electricity and gas to create room for investors to come to Edo to manufacture.

“The Benin Port is not a scam as we will be going to Antwerp next month to sign with the Port of Antwerp in Belgium. We must ensure all we can to get the finance to start the construction is in place before we leave office. All the designs and processes for these projects have started. We need to work with speed.

“We also have to complete a five-star hotel as we have a delegation arriving from the States for this purpose. We must carry our people along in all we do as the government must be for the people we govern.”

Speaking on behalf of the new Commissioners, Joan Osa-Oviawe thanked the governor for the trust and opportunity to serve, urging for collaboration and support of the people.

Health / Obaseki Seeks Greater Action, Collaboration To Conserve Ecosystem, Prevent by UdabaPrince100: 5:59pm On May 22, 2023
Obaseki seeks greater action, collaboration to conserve ecosystem, prevent biodiversity loss

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has called for increased efforts and collaborative action to safeguard the environment, ensuring sustainable practices to preserve the ecosystem and prevent the loss of biodiversity.

The governor made the call in commemoration of the 2023 International Day for Biological Diversity marked by the United Nations and its various organs, with the theme, “From agreement to action: build back biodiversity.”

According to Obaseki, “Biological diversity is the cornerstone of our life on earth. It encompasses the variety of ecosystems, species, and genetic resources that sustain us and contribute to our well-being. It is therefore our responsibility to protect and restore biodiversity, recognizing that our own survival and prosperity are intricately linked to its preservation.

“As we celebrate this year’s International Day for Biological Diversity, we must emphasize the crucial importance of nature conservation and the preservation of our invaluable flora and fauna, not just for the sake of humans but to sustain diverse ecosystems and other organisms that benefit from our peculiar biological composition.”

The governor said the theme of this year’s celebration underscores “the urgent need to move beyond mere agreements and translate our commitments into tangible actions. We must intensify efforts and decisively rebuild and safeguard the diverse ecosystems that have continued to suffer from human activities, climate change, and other challenges.”

Obaseki said his government understands the critical importance of biodiversity to the sustainable development of the state and is implementing policies and initiatives “that promote the conservation and sustainable use of our biodiversity.”

He added, “We are strengthening mechanisms to ensure that we do not lose touch with mother earth and our forest belt. To halt the depletion of forest reserves, we are partnering with forest rangers and security agencies in the state to protect our natural assets including the Okomu Forest, Gelegele Forest, and Okomu National Park, among others.

“We are encouraging private investors in the Edo State Oil Palm Programme (ESOPP) to commit to reserving 20 percent of their plantation so as to contributing our forest regeneration drive.”

“We are collaborating with community leaders and other stakeholders in this regard, intensifying sensitization and education to deepen the crusade to preserve our state’s unique flora and fauna.”

According to the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, “From the air we breathe and the food we eat to the energy that fuels us and the medicines that heal us, our lives are wholly dependent on healthy ecosystems. Yet our actions are devastating every corner of the planet.

“One million species are at risk of extinction - the result of habitat degradation, skyrocketing pollution, and the worsening climate crisis. We must end this war on nature.”

Obaseki unveils book in honour of Okowa at Delta Gov's Valedictory Dinner

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has unveiled a book titled ‘Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, Politics and Power,’ written in honour of his Delta State counterpart, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa.

Speaking after unveiling the book during a valedictory dinner to mark the end of Okowa’s administration, Obaseki described Okowa as a unifier.

Other dignitaries at the diner include former Delta State Governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan; Delta State Governor-elect, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, and Deputy Governor of the State, Kingsley Otuaro.

Obaseki said, “Okowa is a unifier while other regions are pulling apart, he has been a partner pulling Edo and Delta State together. That is the leadership qualities he has that other leaders need to cultivate and emulate.

“We thank God for helping him to keep the tradition, pay his dues, play his part, and keep the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) united. He inherited a PDP Government and handed it over to a PDP Government. You have done it your own way. Thank God for your wife, who has been a pillar of stability in the past eight years.”

He noted, “God has recorded your success as Deltans have felt your impact in the past eight years. God will support you in the next phase of your career.

“I congratulate the governor-elect and his deputy and urge them to continue from where Okowa stopped. Governor-elect, you are coming to join the class of Governors of 2023 and I am the senior prefect of that class and you have to learn the lessons of that class. Okowa who taught us will teach you some lessons before you resume class on May 29th, 2023.”

In his remarks, Governor Okowa expressed appreciation to the people of Delta State, noting, “Thank all those that work with this administration as their various roles and contributions have helped in no little way in moving Delta State forward."

Politics / Afegbua’s Futile Effort To Rewrite Obaseki’s Story by UdabaPrince100: 2:49pm On May 19, 2023
https://www.thecable.ng/afegbuas-futile-effort-to-rewrite-obasekis-story/amp

Afegbua’s futile effort to rewrite Obaseki’s story

When you tell yourself a lie for so long, at some point, you may actually become convinced that it might be true. I believe this is the unfortunate condition that Kassim Afegbua finds himself.

With Governor Godwin Obaseki coming into power in 2016 with some support from Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the likes of Afegbua thought it was going to be business as usual and that their appetite for opulence nursed by the Oshiomhole administration was going to be further entertained in the Obaseki era. But they were visited with a rude shock. Obaseki refused to continue the culture of frittering of the people’s resources.

All efforts by Afegbua to convince Obaseki to continue to throw obscene resources around were not heeded and he soon resorted to attacks against the governor in his weekly, poorly-written opinions published on the back page of a newspaper that has clearly given him that space in an attempt to help in rehabilitating ‘an angel that has fallen from grace.’

A cursory look at Afegbua’s last piece titled, “Edo’s rots and the missing artefacts,” does not reveal any new falsehood. It is the same old lies told over and over again. Shameless display of ignorance of the meaning of MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) and vituperations borne out of worry that Obaseki’s performance has completely eclipsed all that his predecessor considered to be a star performance.

The glory of the latter of Edo has indeed been greater than that of the former, borrowing wisdom from the Holy Scriptures.

The other laughable effort now being made by Afegbua and his ilk is the futile bid to reprimand the World Bank for duly taking notice of the phenomenal transformation of education in Edo State and honouring Governor Obaseki for this lofty accomplishment.

Does Afegbua think that the World Bank is like the local institutions he used to incentivise to give unverified awards to his then principal?

The World Bank is a responsible international Development Finance Institution (DFI) which does not take any decision without independent research and verification. So, if they say Obaseki has performed exceptionally in education, then Afegbua should save his bitterness against Obaseki for lies in some areas.

It is on record that Governor Godwin Obaseki was the only Nigerian representation and indeed the only subnational invited by the World Bank to share insights on how the state expertly utilised public funds to transform public education in Edo at the 2023 World Bank Spring Meetings.

Quoting Martín E. De Simone, an Education Specialist at the World Bank, “The political leadership, commitment and will is the most important in any educational reforms and the Edo State Government under Governor Godwin Obaseki has demonstrated that to deserve the partnership of the World Bank. The governor has done well in the educational sector of the State.”

Also, a recent report by Jaime Saavedra, Global Director, Education Global Practice at the World Bank and Martín E. De Simone, while acknowledging Obaseki’s efforts at improving teaching pedagogy and learning outcomes in schools in Edo State, noted that “the State actively promotes innovation and the use of technology for education. For instance, all the lesson plans are distributed via tablets, and the progress in delivering lessons can be tracked and monitored in real-time.”

In recognition of Governor Obaseki’s prudent management of scarce resources and guaranteeing accountability and transparency in governance, Edo State recently clinched two awards from the World Bank: Public Expenditure Efficiency, and Fiscal Transparency and Accountability Awards.

The World Bank and the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) also adjudged Edo as the leading state in Nigeria in terms of e-procurement implementation strategy, in acknowledgment of the state’s transparent and accountable procurement system, and countries like Gambia, Liberia and over 20 Nigerian states have visited Edo to understudy the outstanding procurement model, including Ogun State who are currently in Edo on a four-day study exchange.

Apart from the World Bank, the governor has continued to receive accolades and international recognition from other notable institutions, including the United Nations International Children’s Fund (UNICEF), European Union (EU), and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), among others. All of which are a testament to the fact that reforms undertaken in the state meet global standards.

The governor’s investment in technology has also been recognized as the state emerged overall best in e-governance implementation in Nigeria, defeating 35 other states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, to clinch the award. It also emerged as the first runner-up in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Human Capital Development and Performing State in ICT Infrastructural Development.

Obaseki’s reforms in the health sector took centre stage on Wednesday in Abuja, as Edo shone brightly at Nigeria Governors’ Forum Primary Health Care (PHC) Leadership Challenge Test, emerging as the runner-up, South-South region for the contest sponsored by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Dangote Foundation and the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA) to win over N184m ($400,000) cash prize.

It is clear that these awards are those that acknowledge the governor’s prudent management of public resources, proving indeed that public funds are being deployed judiciously for the benefit of Edo people. Afegbua and his ilk are obviously throwing tantrums because they have been prevented from feasting on the people’s patrimony. They are now shamelessly pointing accusing fingers at the World Bank for patting the governor on the back for doing an excellent job.

Afegbua and his co-travelers should take note, for their own peace of mind, that from all that Obaseki has done in Edo over the past six years, he shall be recorded in history to be shoulder-to-shoulder with the likes of General Samuel Ogbemudia and Prof. Ambrose Alli who altered the development of Edo people for good for several generations to come.

No amount of pointless articles can change this truth. No amount of bitterness from politicians who are only sad that they couldn’t gain unfettered access to the people’s purse can change the truth of Obaseki’s legacies.

I will quote my father Mr. Matthew Osagie, one of the wisest men I have met as I end this article: “Crusoe, lies have short legs, they can never run far.”

Osagie is special adviser on media projects to the governor of Edo state

Obaseki reforms: Edo shines at NGF leadership challenge for PHCS, wins over N184m cash prize

Reforms by the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, in the health sector to improve primary healthcare delivery across the State, were brought to the fore at the Nigeria Primary Health Care (PHC) Leadership Challenge, as the State shone brightly, clinching over N184m ($400,000) cash prize.

The Primary Health Care (PHC) Leadership Challenge Fund is a flagship programme of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) to revamp the Primary Health Care Under One Roof (PHCUOR) policy in the country by maximising the commitment of state governors to promoting a progressive increase in PHC funding, and ensuring all primary healthcare centres have the requisite human resource capacity.

The Challenge is a joint project of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), the Dangote Foundation and the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA).

Edo State emerged as the runner-up, South-South region to clinch the N184m cash prize.

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki and the immediate past Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akoria Obehi, led the delegation from the Edo State Ministry of Health to the very colorful event held at Presidential Villa, in Abuja.

Reacting to the honour, Governor Obaseki said the achievement is a testament to the transformative reforms implemented by his administration in the health sector over the past six years.

He noted, “Our primary goal has always been to improve healthcare delivery and ensure that every citizen has access to quality primary healthcare services. For us, this is not just a recognition of our achievements but an affirmation of our resolve to continue pushing the boundaries of excellence in healthcare delivery. It reinforces our determination to sustain the momentum we have built and further improve the well-being of our people.”

The governor reassured, “We will continue to invest in infrastructure, human resources, and cutting-edge technologies that will strengthen our primary healthcare system and make it more responsive to the needs of our communities.”

Also, Prof. Akoria said the Challenge provided a fine platform to showcase the outstanding progress made by the Governor Obaseki-led administration in promoting primary healthcare and ensuring that every Edo citizen has access to quality care.

The Representative of UNICEF in Nigeria, Cristian Munduate, noted that the award was in recognition of the exceptional leadership shown by the governors in investing significantly in Primary Health Care, thereby positively transforming the lives of women, girls, and children in their respective states.

Obaseki receives interim report of AAU Special Intervention Team, pledges to investigate findings, restore varsity’s lost glory

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Wednesday, received an interim report of the Ambrose Alli University (AAU) Special Intervention Team, reaffirming his government’s commitment to repositioning the university and restoring the lost glory of the state-owned tertiary institution.

Obaseki, while receiving the report at the Government House in Benin City, commended the team for their service to the State and contributing their quota in advancing the government’s vision of repositioning the institution to meet global standards.

He said, “The greatest legacy for late Prof. Ambrose Alli is to restore this University back to its glory days and that of his dreams. He never made the University to be an ethnic university but a state university and positioned it as such. The view that the AAU belongs to any group or ethnic group should be canceled immediately. The University belongs to Edo people. It’s Edo State University and the investment is for taxpayers of Edo State.”

Obaseki continued: “As a government, we have the political will as we are taking a major transformation in our education sector and can do so with our University. We need to clean up the system preparing it for our children coming in.

“I appreciate the professionalism and commitment taken in the assignment by the Special Intervention Team of the AAU. We persuaded most of you to take up this task as it’s an assignment for the state and nation.

“Even though you have not finished the assignment, it’s clear that you have put in a lot of time and commitment to get us where we are today.”

The governor further noted, “Your reports show that there is a criminal aspect in your investigation submitted so far. We don't have to wait for a full report. That is why I invited the security agencies to commence action and investigation on the criminal aspect of your findings today.”

Reacting to the encroachment of AAU land, Governor Obaseki noted, “In the case of encouragement, we would take our Special Intervention Team to dialogue with those that encroached on the school land and properties to take it back.”

On the issue of the implementation of pension reforms, Obaseki said, “We have to sit down and have a team to go through the figures and have the actual calculations done. Then we set up a plan on how to liquidate the outstanding gratuity and pension.

“We want a survey done to know how many children of the staff of AAU attend that University to see if they are happy with the school and are ready to give their children such education or are taking money from AAU to give better education to their children elsewhere.”

Speaking on behalf of the AUU SIT, Mr. Austin Osakue thanked the governor for the opportunity to serve the State, pledging their continued support to the government in repositioning the University.

Obaseki reels gains in tackling illegal migration, human trafficking as Edo, IOM expands operational base in Benin

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has rolled out his government’s successes in tackling human trafficking in the last six years, reassuring that his government will continue to strengthen the legal framework and institutions to stamp out the menace in the state.

Obaseki, who spoke while inaugurating the new office of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Benin City, said his government will sustain the collaboration with the IOM and other partners to combat illegal migration and human trafficking and all other forms of modern-day slavery in the state.

The governor said, “Since 2018, when the IOM moved its central base to Benin City for better coordination, its effort to stem the tide of illegal Migration and human trafficking was better appreciated. The work of this organization, particularly fortifying migration governance to promote legal migration and support returnees and victims of illegal migration has achieved positive results.

“For the support, assistance, and cooperation received from IOM, the Edo State Government may not have been able to set up its task force to tackle human trafficking and illegal migration. We appreciate the support of IOM and the collaboration received by my administration so far. We have gone through a lot alongside your staff to receive, resettle and reintegrate returnees into our communities. We will continue to appreciate you and work with you until we are finally able to resolve the issues of human trafficking and irregular migration in Edo State.”

He continued: “In 2016 when we came to office, we were confronted with statistics of a large number of our youths who migrated illegally overseas and fell victim to human trafficking and it was a major battle to turn the tide. Edo was an epicenter of this disturbing trend which has been a challenge due to governance failures amongst other factors. However, we were resolute to tackle the challenges and find a dependable partner in IOM.

“We accepted we had a problem and agreed we have a major challenge in our hands and went ahead to solve this problem working with IOM and other partners and the menace has graphically reduced. IOM can attest to the fact that Edo State is no longer the leading state for illegal migration.

“Through the Edo State Trafficking in Persons and Prohibition Law, with the assistance of the IOM, we have built institutional mechanisms for checking the trend and reassuring the reintegration of returnees back into our society. We are delighted that IOM is expanding its operational base in the State by opening this new office and upgrading its facilities and we believe this will enhance their capacity to support their programmes and our programmes aimed at tackling this problem and challenges.”

Earlier, the IOM Deputy Director-General for Operations, Ugochi Daniel, thanked the Governor and Government of Edo State for collaborating with IOM to tackle the menace of human trafficking and irregular migration in Edo.

Daniel noted, “Opening this new center in Benin is significant and it reflects our relationship with the state government over the years. Edo State remains the heart of migration in Nigeria and it is important for us to establish a center in a community where migration has driven development. A center in Edo State means we are close to our clients’ base in the South-South and South-East.

“It’s our hope that this new center will lead us to new programming areas to complement the support and vision of the Edo State Government. We pledge to continue to support the vision of the state government.”

Education / Edo Education Week: Obaseki Launches Agenda To Improve Learning Outcomes In Sch by UdabaPrince100: 7:24pm On Apr 27, 2023
Edo Education Week: Obaseki launches agenda to improve learning outcomes in schools

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Thursday, launched the Edo State Learning Agenda, a blueprint to measure and improve learning outcomes in schools across the State and ensure the sustainability of ongoing reforms in the education sector.

Obaseki launched the agenda as part of programmes for the Edo Education Week 2023, taking place in Benin City, the Edo State capital, between February 26 and February 30, 2023.

He said, “I am here today to launch the Edo Learning Agenda. Our vision is to create a state where all boys and girls arrive at school ready to learn, acquire real learning, and are ready to enter the job market with the right skills to become productive and fulfilled citizens. We believe we will achieve these goals.

“In setting the learning agenda, we looked at three key elements: How do we get our children ready to learn? How do we get them to read?, and how do we get them to learn the skills we need them to learn so that they can be useful to their communities and country?”

Noting that ongoing reforms in the state’s education sector, especially those in the basic education system through the EdoBEST programme have helped place the state on the global map, Obaseki said the learning agenda will help solidify the gains so far recorded and create pathways for sustainability.

He added, “For us, it's about planning: laying the plan and the trajectory which the education system should proceed over the next several decades.

“We have to come up with means to measure learning outcomes. We have to work with our partners to develop large-scale assessment tools and define our targets.”

Obaseki continued: “Are the teachers in school? Yes, they are. Are the students in school? Yes, they are. We have data to show. Are the teachers teaching? Yes, they are, we can see them from our portal. What are they teaching, pedagogy? We are working on it. Are the children learning? I don't know and that is what learning poverty is about.

“We’ve done these three things and need to focus on the fourth one - how do we know the children are learning? Where is the evidence that these children are learning? What agenda do we have to measure or standard measures to show us clearly that they are learning and what they are learning? The last issue we need to deal with is sustainability - how do we ensure we do not step back after we leave office next year? How do we keep the system running for a long time even for those who want to continue with the reforms?

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening the state’s education sector, the governor added, “Recognition from across the globe and outside the state is very important and helpful so that our people begin to realize that what we are doing, the world acknowledges.”

Obaseki pledges to sustain reforms in education, to distribute additional 1.5m books, others to Edo schools

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his government will sustain ongoing reforms in the state’s education sector, ensuring the right infrastructure, manpower, and other incentives to achieve a quality, world-class educational system.

The governor gave the assurance when he inspected additional 1.5 million books and other instructional materials to be distributed to schools across the three senatorial districts of the State.

Obaseki, who inspected the materials at New Era College in Benin City, said his government is rethinking the education sector to equip young people in the state with the skills and knowledge required to survive the fourth industrial revolution.

He noted, “We will do all we can to ensure that the system continues and is sustained. Talk about it and let the world know about the changes in the education sector in Edo State. We thank you all for being part of the educational revolution in Edo State. Printing almost 2 million books and distributing them across the 18 local government areas of the state is a huge task.

“I urge you to make sure that the books are not trashed but used effectively. I trust Edo children to put the materials to best use and the society will be better for it and will reap the benefits of our education revolution in the State.”

On her part, the Chairman of SUBEB, Mrs. Ozavize Salami said the State has distributed 3.3 million books to 848 primary schools and 306 junior secondary schools across Edo.

She noted, “The basic education system reforms in the State are all about the children learning better. On the international stage, Edo is seen as a country due to the success of Governor Obaseki's educational reforms in Edo State. Since the programme started, we have distributed 1.8 million books across 848 primary schools in the State. An additional 1.5 million books will be distributed free to all schools in the 18 local government councils of the State.”

According to Salami, “the free books, provided with the support of the World Bank will benefit 381,398 students across 1,330 state-owned primary and junior secondary schools.”

Obaseki receives delegates from Air Force War College in Edo to understudy mining sector security mgt system

… team hails Obaseki, says Edo mining sector organised, promising

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Wednesday, received a team of the Nigerian Air Force War College who were in Edo to understudy the state’s mining sector security management system, which has repositioned its mining sector as the third most active in the country.

The Commandant, Air Force War College Nigeria, Air Vice Marshall Abraham Adole, led the Course 9/2023 delegates who are on a study tour to Edo State, with the theme, “Internal Security and Mineral Exploitation in Edo State by 2028: Strategic Options,” on a courtesy visit at the Government House in Benin City.

Receiving the team, Governor Obaseki noted that the issue of security is one of the greatest challenges of the mining sector, stating that his government has adopted a systematic approach, sustaining collaboration with security agencies in the state to ensure safety and security in the sector.

He noted, “We are quite excited that you chose to come to Edo to also understand and throw a bit more light on issues that have challenged us which we have been working assiduously to resolve.

“Mining areas are usually very volatile, security-wise, so what do we do as a state? We've had situations where we had to just prohibit mining activities in certain areas due to tension in the communities.

“We are going to be very interested in getting your views and insights on how we should organize security in areas where extraction is taking place and also to deal with a major issue that comes out of the extractive business which is the security considerations."

Obaseki continued: “We have two strategic resources that, we as a people, have which we must focus on. The first is culture expressed in our arts, defense system, how we conduct ourselves as a people, and our political, social, and cultural institutions which we can proudly say places us in a very unique position in the continent and we believe that if we can diversify our economy to take advantage of these unique cultural assets we have, it gives us a room above everybody else in Nigeria.

“Our goal as a government is to make Edo a cultural hub and we will continue to work hard to invest in these unique assets. It's challenging moving people from where they used to be to where they should be going but we are optimistic that in spite of the lack of understanding of what we are trying to do, we will eventually get to where we expect to be.”

According to him, “Mining is also very important and critical for us. We are lucky that in addition to mineral resources, we also have the largest onshore gas reserve which means that we have the energy sources to process mined resources. Our view is whatever we are doing, there has to be a lot more value addition so that we don't run into a resource curse where you extract and take everything out. Our view is to extract and process locally for the local and international markets.

“We are beginning to see some of that. Limestone for instance, in Okpella, we have two of the largest cement companies in the country who, by the end of this year, will produce an excess of 9 million tonnes of cement and all of that is being utilized in the local market. We have some international companies who are mining things like silicate for glass, phosphate for tiles, and so on.

“Mining is no longer an exclusive reserve of the federal government. We've seen various agencies of the federal government reaching out now to allow more local participation in mining by working with the state and local governments and communities to set up corporations and companies that can organize themselves to raise the required capital and resources to undertake these mining activities."

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property, Obaseki added, "For us as a subnational, anytime we have the opportunity to contribute our own little bit to strengthening the security apparatus of Nigeria, we see it as a priority.

National power is most expressed by the level of security and order within the national context and the people who are constitutionally responsible for projecting national power are not the politicians but the security structure.”

Earlier, AVM Adole noted, “One of the modules of the course is about coming up with strategies to combat threats and Edo became a case study due to how organized the mining sector in the state is due to the policies and structures put in place by the administration.

"As Nigeria begins to shift its attention towards solid mineral exploitation, the state has established structure, institutions, policies, programmes, and the expertise to drive the process.”

He added, “As of last year, the state held the third largest licenses for mining in Nigeria, indicating a well-organized and promising industry. These are just a few of the reasons that revalidate our choice why we chose Edo State for the study tour of Air War Course 9/2023.

“We not only intend to study the current happenings in the state but also to appraise trends and other variables with a view to forecasting the state of the subject matter by the year 2028.”

Edo Education Week: We’re grooming our children for a knowledge-based economy – Obaseki

... ‘Edo to become best place to live, work by 2050’

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the state government through its various reforms in the state is preparing Edo children for opportunities in the emerging knowledge-based economy in the state.

The governor, who said this at the opening ceremony of the Edo Education Week 2023, on Wednesday, in Benin City, noted that the goal of his administration’s reforms is focused on improving human capacity development and building a prosperous workforce.

He added that the state government recorded remarkable improvements in the education sector, noting, “The Edo Education Week is a week where we put together a series of events to underscore our focus in transforming public education and portray the success of education reforms in Edo State.

“In the last six years in the state, we have been able to focus on driving fundamental changes in education and preparing our young ones for the knowledge-based economy that is required for us to survive in the fourth industrial revolution.

“The most cherished legacy that I want to be remembered for as a governor is a legacy that we are able to transform public education and create opportunities for thousands of children from different strata of the society, ensuring they get good, decent, world-class education like we did when we were growing up here.

“The theme of the education week is tied to our vision to drive our developmental plan with conscious and well-educated citizens. Our vision to build education at the foundational level and scale our interventions through the various levels of education up to the tertiary level is critical to enable us to build a workforce that will usher us into a prosperous society. The future we see is that of a state that doesn’t rely on oil resources alone from the federal government to run our economy. The future we see is four million well-educated citizens participating in our economy by undertaking various economic activities with the advantages and knowledge acquired.”

Obaseki said that the focus and grand plan is to make Edo State the best place to live and work by the year 2050, noting that the best way to realize this dream is to train the workforce from the primary school level.

He added, “We started the education reform in 2018 when we launched the EdoBEST programme in the state as we started with a pilot scheme before full rollout across the basic school system in the three Senatorial Districts in the state. With EdoBEST 2.0 we now have a more holistic model that has been rolled out across various levels of education. Under the model, we are prioritizing grassroots sports development and other curricular activities to give Edo children the best education.”

In her remarks, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Joan Osa Oviawe, expressed appreciation to Edo people for supporting the successes of the Governor Obaseki-led administration in the education sector, which started on April 19th, 2018.

The keynote speaker, Lebo Mashile, an education expert from South Africa, underscored the role of youths in the emerging world order, noting that they are a powerful resource for growing the economy.

Obaseki commissions tablet computer production, repair centre in Benin, recommits to technical education

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Wednesday, commissioned the Imose tablet Production Center at the Benin Technical School, where students will be equipped with the skills to produce and repair tablet computers.

Obaseki was accompanied on the commissioning by the Secretary to State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq.; Chief of Staff, Hon Osaigbovo Iyoha; Commissioner for Education, Dr. Joan Osa Oviawe and the Commissioner for Housing, Physical Planning, Urban and Regional Development, Isoken Omo amongst other government officials.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to technical and vocational education, the governor said his administration is connecting all the 18 local government areas to fibres which will be extended to schools in the state to drive the industrial revolution.

He noted, “In 2016 and 2017 when we took over office, over 30,000 Edo youths struggled to cross to Libya and other countries, and education was one of the problems that prompted such moves. We did not accept the drop in the attendance in schools as it facilitated irregular migration and human trafficking and my administration moved to change this trajectory. We are achieving results and have been recognized around the world.

“The EdoBEST programme has continued to shape and improve the quality of education in Edo as the State is the only sub-national invited to attend the World Bank’s Global Education Summit. We will continue to talk about our successes in the education sector.

“As we celebrate the education week, it’s our pleasure to unveil another innovative programme which will add value to the lives of our students as they not only get certificates but skills that will make them employable or create more jobs for others.”

Restating the government’s vision to transform the education sector, Obaseki added, "They continue to fight us for daring to do the right thing as we refuse to share the money, but we have continued to defeat them.

“This is a milestone as we are using this to change the entire pedagogy and change our post-education system. The vision is to change the education sector and we want to invite industries to come into this Institution to establish their base. This will not just be a school but also a production center, creating opportunities for practicals, as contractors will use materials from the school.”

On his part, the Chief Executive Officer of Imose Technology, Osayi Izedonmwen, noted that the “Center will ensure intensive training of students as it will enable students to become employed. We thank the governor for his educational reforms.”

A student of Benin Technical College, Miss Oluchi Favour China, while hailing the governor, said, “The teaching programme is to begin with a lesson focused on repairs and to be progressed into the production aspect.”

Obaseki eulogizes quintessential journalist, Peter Enahoro, extols his illustrious contributions to nat’l devt

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has mourned the passing of foremost journalist, Peter Enahoro, describing him as a ‘national treasure’.

In a statement, the governor said Enahoro made “insightful and critical commentary on the Nigerian nation and its march to a free, fair and just society.”

According to him, “I am deeply pained by the news of the passing of renowned journalist and scribe, Peter Enahoro, self-styled ‘Peter Pan’ in his newspaper column, where he made insightful and critical commentary on the Nigerian nation and its march to a free, fair and just society.

“Pa Enahoro, who hails from Uromi, in Edo State, was sired by a lineage of politically-conscious parents and as he grew older, he made a lasting imprint on journalism practice in Nigeria and internationally.

“He ventured into journalism at an early age and rose rapidly to the highest positions in the field in the 1960s, becoming the Editor of Sunday Times at 23 years and then Editor of Daily Times in 1966.”

He added: “Pa Enahoro conquered the local scene and launched an impressive international journalism stint that heavily impacted how the outer world views and understands the complexities of Nigeria today.

“A quintessential columnist, his takes on Nigeria’s pressing and nagging issues were deeply thought-out and poignant, a reflection of his very matured political opinions as well as critical views of those in power at various times in the history of the country.

“He can be rightly described as a national treasure, who secured his place in history in the feisty early years of Nigeria’s nationhood. Working as a newspaper editor, he spared none of the Premiers of Nigeria’s three regions at the time in his satirical pieces – he would engage in gutsy debates with the Sardauna of Sokoto and Premier of Northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello; spar with the Premier of Western Nigeria, Ladoke Akintola, on topical issues and Dr. Michael Okpara of Eastern Nigeria was not left out.

“Pa Ehanoro later went into self-imposed exile for about 13 years, during which time he worked at reputable international publications, bringing issues bedevilling Nigeria to the attention of the global community.

“He was a cerebral journalist, who deployed his intellect in the service of the country, providing and nurturing the space for healthy debates on national policies that impact the lives of the people.

“One can rightly say that his engagements were a labour of love for the development of Nigeria and the vibrant press in the country today owes much of its credit to Pa Enahoro’s bold and courageous skill with the pen to hold those in power to account for their deeds.”

The governor described him as a thorough-bred Edo man, who spoke truth to power and espoused noble virtues of diligence, hard work and intellectual rigour.

He added: “Pa Enahoro will be remembered for his charm and candour as well as his commitment to a society with a free, just and vibrant press, where everyone is free to express their opinion without let.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Edo State, I express my sincere condolences to the Enahoro family, the Nigeria press, and all admirers of the great ‘Peter Pan’ and pray that God will grant all the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”

She said, “The governor of Edo State is passionate about the youth because without them, the state will dwindle and we have to get them occupied meaningfully, invest in them, empower them, find means of survival for them via employment or entrepreneurship.

“We are going all out to move our youths off the streets and stop irregular migration. We want them to know the opportunities available for them as you can get trained in vocational skills, employability and I.T skills, which is the future of work.

“This kind of event is about communication to tell them what we are about, what we can offer them and what the government has put in place to make sure they succeed, as well as renew their minds to trust the government and see others who are doing well and believe in themselves that they can.”

According to him, “The governor has ensured that all these are free and the selection process is fair. You do not need to know anybody, just go to the job centers or Local Government Secretariats to get the information to access the training.

“There are startup packs available for every training we provide. We have partnership with donor organizations that have come to trust this Government to support us in ensuring we remove the youths from the streets.”

Also, the Commissioner for Business, Trade and Cooperatives, Afishetu Braimoh noted that the “Governor Godwin Obaseki is so passionate about empowering the youths and MSMEs and making them understand that without them, the state cannot thrive and move forward.

“It is clear that his vision has to materialize by creating an enabling environment for the MSMEs by having events like this, bringing everyone together to network, exchange ideas and open them up to the knowledge gap that is missing between MSMEs.”

Benin Port Project: 10 Edo indigenes on NIMASA NSDP scholarship scheme to be engaged as pioneer staff – Ogbeifun

The Chairman of the Benin Port Project, Engr. Greg Ogbeifun, has assured that the ten Edo indigenes undergoing studies under the Nigerian Seafarers Development programme (NSDP) scholarship scheme will be engaged as pioneer staff of the Benin Port.

In a statement, Ogbeifun, said the ten Edo indigenes are making progress in their studies.

He noted that a major advantage of the Port Project is the opportunity it presents to build local capacity of Edo youths to participate actively in the maritime sector.

The young Edo indigenes are part of other Nigerian students on fully funded scholarships in Greece and India by Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) studying maritime related courses.

The port project is jointly being executed by the Edo State Government and the Federal Government through the Nigeria Port Authority (NPA).

The Minister of Transportation had set up the Project Steering Committee (PSC) and Project Delivery Team (PDT) to ensure realisation of the Benin Port Project under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement, as already approved by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC).

The port is a legacy project of the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration, which aims to contribute to the development of both the maritime and agricultural sectors, creating massive employment opportunities.

The project site is located at the confluence of Osse River and Benin River, making it the closest port to the sea after the ports of Lagos, at only 32km from the coastline.

Politics / Edo Lawyer Decries Mayaki’s Diabolic Obsession With Obaseki, Urges Sacked Aide by UdabaPrince100: 7:10pm On Apr 24, 2023
Edo lawyer decries Mayaki’s diabolic obsession with Obaseki, urges sacked aide to get a decent paying job

An Edo State-based legal practitioner, Greg Ewah Esq., has charged a former aide to Governor of Edo State, Mr. John Mayaki, to quit the diabolic and unwarranted obsession with Governor Godwin Obaseki, and focus on building a decent career.

Ewah, who decried the recent jibes at the governor by Mayaki over the recent recognition by the World Bank, said the ex-aide was pained because he was sacked over his incompetence over seven years ago and hasn’t gotten over the unfortunate incident.

According to him, “It is quite curious that Mr. John Mayaki has made attacking the Governor his day job. He was sacked as Interim Chief Press Secretary (CPS) and has never gotten a decent job ever since. After hobnobbing with the opposition for crumbs and staging laughable Public Relations (PR) stunts for his immediate family members, he will always make a roundabout turn to obsess with the governor and issue watery stations. He would then proceed to make demands that are way above his station.

“In the eyes of the right-thinking members of the public, his actions would appear petty and infantile, but it is disturbing that Mayaki doesn’t see it as such. He thinks he is on top of the world.

“While many in the state were overjoyed over the invitation extended to Governor Obaseki to present the successes of the education reforms in the State at the Spring Meetings in Washington DC, USA, Mayaki was busy manufacturing lies and making shameful demands from the World Bank.”

He noted that the reforms being undertaken in the state are to the benefit of every child in Edo, including relatives of Mayaki, but instead of appreciating these transformational policy changes, he chose to play petty politics.

“I urge the public to disregard the tantrums from Mayaki. He is a man who needs to find a decent paying job so he can have ample time for productive work and not scheming to undermine efforts to transform the state,” Ewah said.

Business / Edo Moves To End Gender-based Violence, Others, Intensifies Sensitization On VAP by UdabaPrince100: 5:53pm On Apr 17, 2023
Edo moves to end gender-based violence, others, intensifies sensitization on VAPP Law

The Edo State Government has intensified efforts to end gender-based violence and all other forms of violence against persons in the state, taking sensitization on the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law to various communities in the state.

The government, through the Edo Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues, in collaboration with the Edo State Gender-Based Management Committee (GBV-MC), recently engaged with leaders and residents of Orhionmwon Local Government Area (LGA) to sensitize them on the provisions of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law aimed at eliminating violence against persons and other related acts from the state.

The one-day sensitization, themed, “Advocacy/Sensitization on the provisions of the VAPP Law across Edo,” held at Orhionmwon LGA Secretariat in Abudu.

The forum had in attendance traditional rulers of various communities in the LGA, leaders of market women, leaders of various associations, people living with disability, among others.

In her opening address, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues, Mrs. Barbara Osobajo said the engagement was aimed at ending gender-based violence and all other forms of violence against vulnerable people in the state.

She said, “We have convened this meeting to raise awareness among all of us here to tell you about the efforts that the government of Governor Godwin Obaseki is putting into the legal framework of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law and address the societal ills all over.

“We are looking at a society where everyone is empowered to reach their maximum potential and be able to thrive, and to let you know that there is a law in place that will help us fight this menace that we are all facing and the need to promote a more socially-inclusive society.”

The Permanent Secretary further stated, “The VAPP Law 2021 addresses the issues of abuse, violation of human rights of all genders and not just women alone. The law is all embracing and our call today is to all of us who are seated and for us to take the message back home that it is our collective responsibility for us to make the contribution that will address the matters in the VAPP Law.

“We want everyone to have improved knowledge of the law, commit to this campaign and make our society free from all forms of violence, irrespective of the gender it affects.

“We also require that anytime you see or hear about anything that is not right, particularly in the areas of abuse, do not keep quiet. It is your duty to report, call on those in charge and let them know what is happening.”

“Your contributions will go a long way to strengthen the implementation of the law and make it useful,” she charged.

On her part, Resource Perrson and member, Gender based violence management committee, Barr. Ulo Uzamere noted that the “VAPP Law has been established since 2015 and now every state in Nigeria has bought into this to prosecute perpetrators of violence against persons. It is no longer about familial settlement as it used to be as the government has stepped in to handle these issues.

“The VAPP Law contains among other provisions rape in any form which attracts life imprisonment for the perpetrators, while under-aged will face 12 years’ imprisonment and those who aided the crime also have a certain number of years to be jailed. The issue of girl-child circumcision attracts 4 years of imprisonment, #500,000 fine or both.

“Some other provisions include forceful ejection from home (for couples) which attracts jail term of 2 years, #300,000 fine or both; economic abuse; forced isolation or separation from family and friends; abandonment; spousal battery and inhuman treatment of widows/harmful traditional practice.”
