NLC Protest: Obaseki empathises with Edo people, Nigerians over high cost of living

...assures sustained measures to ease suffering, hardship

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has empathised with people of the State and Nigerians over the incessant rise in prices of goods and services and overall cost of living in the Country, which has inflicted pain and suffering on the people, reassuring that his government will continue to provide measures to ease the hardship faced by the people of the State.

Obaseki spoke when he received members of the Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and other concerned Nigerians who were on a peaceful protest, at the Government House, Benin City, the Edo State capital, to register their displeasure over the high cost of living occasioned by the fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government.

Obaseki who was represented by the Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Hon. Chris Nehikhare, in company of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media Projects, Crusoe Osagie, said the government stands with the people in this very challenging times.

He said, “The Edo State Government supports the protest. We identify with you because this hike in price has affected everyone. We are doing our best to see how this hardship is reduced or limited for Edo people.

“The important thing is to ensure that we are able to feed Edo people. We will do our best in terms of feeding but we don’t have power over fuel. We are doing our best to ensure all the filling stations in Edo State sell fuel at the agreed prices.

“We are concerned about the hardship facing Edo people that was why few days ago, the Edo State Government had a meeting with market women, farmers, traders, civil society groups and a host of others in the food chain at Urokpota Hall in Benin City.”

Noting ongoing efforts to address the rise in price of food, the governor stated, “The Edo State Government has put many things in place to change the narrative and help reduce the cost of food.

“Our government feels the pain of the Edo people. We want Edo to thrive and are not happy as a government that we have to protest to register our displeasure over the high rise of food prices.

“We appeal to Edo people and will make sure that the government has put in groundwork for the people and reduces the hardship.

“The farming season is just beginning. We are assisting with the preparations of land, farming inputs, and equipment and are ready for a bumper harvest. We are making sure that roads are good and reduce the cost of transportation. We are also assisting in bringing the food to the City.

“The message of this protest will be carried to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We want to also let Edo people know that the Edo State Government identifies with Edo people because of the rise in cost of living and will do all necessary to ensure Edo people don't suffer from this hardship."

Earlier, the Chairman of NLC, Edo State Chapter, Comrade Odion Olaiye said, “Members of NLC are here to register their protest on behalf of the Congress to Mr. Governor for onward transmission to Mr. President. We can’t bear hunger anymore. Food items are very high now and people are finding it difficult to eat. Things are hard for Nigerians as we call on the president to intervene.”

Business / Obaseki Reforms: We’ve Cultivated Over 2,000 Hectares Of Oil Palm, Now Exporting by UdabaPrince100: 7:08pm On Feb 27
Obaseki reforms: We’ve cultivated over 2,000 hectares of oil palm, now exporting to Ondo, Kwara, others – Bravag Ltd

The Managing Director of Bravag Nigeria Limited, Mr. Erhunse Oviawe, has said that with reforms pioneered by Governor Godwin Obaseki through the Edo State Oil Palm Programme (ESOPP), his company has developed a 2000 hectares farm estate and is now exporting Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB) to other parts of the country.

In a chat with journalists, Oviawe noted that the company’s milling plant will start processing FFB next month, when the equipment installation is complete.

According to him, “We have 2,000 hectares of oil palm. We will start milling in the next one month, as I said, because we have fruits coming out in bunches. We call them FFB (fresh fruit bunches). We are now selling to other mills in Edo State; they come in to buy. Even from outside the state, from as far as Ondo.

“Today, we have enquiries from Kwara; they want to come down and collect from us. Even from Delta, they come in to buy oil palm from us. We have a mill that is starting production in another month or two. But because our mill is not ready, that is why we are selling bunches to other millers.”

He added that the Edo State Geographic Information Service (EdoGIS) has also been instrumental to the ease of doing business in the State as it has simplified ease of securing of legitimate land titles which has eased access to finance.
Politics / Obaseki Decries Dislocation In Nigeria’s Education System by UdabaPrince100: 8:16pm On Feb 18
Obaseki decries dislocation in Nigeria’s education system

…links inconsistency to irregular migration, human trafficking

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has decried the dislocation in Nigeria’s education system, linking the inconsistency to the high level of irregular migration and human trafficking in the country.

The governor, who spoke to journalists in Benin City, said his government is changing the narrative and has, over the past seven years, focused on reforming and strengthening the State’s education system using the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST).

He stated that the success recorded by his administration in the fight against human trafficking and illegal migration in the State is linked to reforms in the education sector as well as programmes and projects to equip and build the capacity of Edo youths to become globally competitive.

According to Obaseki, “Re-enacting basic education in the State has thrown up several issues and shows us the dislocation in our educational policies and how it's affecting the whole chain. The breakdown of our basic education is one of the root causes of irregular migration and has led to human trafficking in the State.”

The governor noted, “We embarked on EdoBEST to change the narrative. We decided to set up an education fund to encourage more students to go to school. We also focused on teachers to improve the learning standards. Five years on, we can now see a reversal and rapid improvement in learning outcomes.”

On efforts by his administration to transform the State’s tertiary education system following the success recorded at the basic and secondary education level, Obaseki noted, “We are committed to sustaining the revamp in our tertiary education system. All our local government areas have been connected with fiber as we have almost 2,000km of fiber across Edo State. It’s our priority that tertiary schools in the State are connected as it supports distance learning.”

He further charged, “We have to focus on what tertiary education should be and how we should rethink tertiary education to provide the manpower that we urgently need to improve productivity. We should wake up as a nation as our problem in Nigeria is not the exchange rate but productivity. We are not training our children to understand this and be productive.”
Business / Obaseki’s Investment Drive Soars As Dufil's Investments In Edo Hits N25bn* by UdabaPrince100: 7:23pm On Feb 13
Obaseki’s investment drive soars as Dufil's investments in Edo hits N25bn

On the back of far-reaching reforms by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration to drive investment and boost economic activities in Edo, the State has continued to witness a surge of big-ticket players with investment by Dufil Prima Food Limited, makers of Indomie Noodles, hitting N25billion in five years.

The surge in investment in Edo reflects the burgeoning confidence of the private sector in the conducive business environment created by Governor Obaseki over the past eight years, repositioning the State as a prime destination for business and commerce.

Speaking to journalists in Benin City, the governor said the reforms have ensured the inflow of substantial investment from various investors into the State, significantly contributing to job creation and economic growth and development.

According to him, “Dufil Prima Food Limited got land from Edo State Government to farm oil palm when they started their oil palm business in 2019, and when they started, they saw the need to diversify into cassava because of the availability of the product and as you can see today, they have invested in excess of N25 billion naira in various investments.

“We are here to see how far they have gone, see what they have done, the challenges they have, and how collectively as State Government and ESOPP investors we can work to reduce the risk and encourage more investments.”

Obaseki further noted, “We are benefiting from various investments in the State like the factory of Dufil built four years ago and producing quality cassava flour and other byproducts for the poultry Industry. The State is benefiting from the food sufficiency standpoint from this investment.

“We have received substantial investment from various investors as investment has come into the State and a lot has come into the economy of Edo State, showing that a lot of economic activities are going on.”

On the economic impact of the investment, the governor stated, "From the farm and ethanol factory, they created over 1,500 direct jobs for the people. They are helping us reduce the challenge of unemployment, develop the State, expand it, and bring in people into the area with better opportunities. Edo State is one State where you can come to invest and make a lot of returns and grow your business.”

He added, “Dufil has shown us that what we are producing as cassava is not up to the demand. The variety of cassava used for industrial production is different from the one we eat.”
Politics / Ogie Vasco A Meddlesome Interloper, Working With Counter Forces To Undermine Edo by UdabaPrince100: 5:53pm On Feb 07
Ogie Vasco a meddlesome interloper, working with counter forces to undermine Edo PDP

At no time was he elected State Publicity Secretary of our party

must be disregarded, ignored

Our attention has been drawn to an illegal and incredibly ridiculous statement purportedly issued by one Ogie Vasco who is unlawfully parading himself as the State Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State.

We would have ordinarily ignored the six-paragraph divisive scribbling filled with false and baseless ramblings on the party’s recently concluded ward delegate congress which took place simultaneously across the State, but for the sake of clarity, it is important to state that the rabble-rouser is an impostor and is not known to the PDP in Edo State.

More so, signing off the statement from an address that is not known to be the address of the Edo PDP Secretariat, further gives him out as a meddlesome interloper and an agent of destabilization, who should be ignored by all party members and other stakeholders.

In all modesty, the recent congress, held last Sunday, stands as one of the best congresses ever organised in the recent history of the State, but Vasco would not know that as he has never participated or witnessed a congress before, It was peaceful and credible with party members electing their delegates with keen supervision of the Committee set up by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Party.

It is also important to clarify that the materials used for the delegate election across the State came from the 3-man Ad-hoc Ward Delegate Electoral Committee led by Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, and its distribution was handled at the PDP State Secretariat, hence Vasco's claims are not only unfounded but divisive and misleading.

If he was a genuine member of the party, he would know the location of the party secretariat and would have been able to see the materials when they came because all eligible members of the Party have access to the Secretariat , while the Delegate Committee from the Party’s National leadership were the ones in custody of the materials.

Is it not even perplexing that some aspirants are opposed to the Congress? Were they contesting as delegates themselves? And who appointed Ogie Vasco as the spokesperson of the aspirants if not for mischief and the crumbs that may fall from the table of any of the aspirants?

If Vasco was by any means informed, he would have known that Congress proceedings are determined by the party's national leadership, not the aspirants. Rather than showcasing his dorkiness, he should go and study the guidelines as issued by the National Working Committee in line with the Party’s Constitution.

We are however not surprised at the antics of Ogie Vasco and his ilk who are working with counter forces to weaken the party. We know that their game is to undermine the party in pursuit of their pecuniary interests.

Their attempts to derail us from retaining Osadebey Avenue will not succeed. We are aware of their anti-party agenda; the same antiparty activities witnessed during the State House of Assembly election which PDP members gallantly quelled and eventually retained the maximum seats in the House.

I want to inform Ogie Vasco and his paymasters that the same gallant party members who defeated them in the past remain resolute and united, and are surefooted and ready to batter them to submission again in the coming governorship election in the State.

Signed

Dr BOLAJI OJEBUOBOH

Politics / Opposition Politics Not Cynicism, Edo Govt Tells Tenebe by UdabaPrince100: 8:07pm On Feb 02
Opposition politics not cynicism, Edo govt tells Tenebe

We are perplexed to learn of the quite laughable and incredibly ridiculous tantrums attributed to the new acting chairman of the Edo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Jarret Tenebe where he made baseless and spurious allegations on the fiscal management of our dear State by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led government.

Obviously pained by the achievements of the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki across all sectors of the State over the past seven years – which he and his co-travelers are trying hard to deny - Tenebe has been on a frenzy looking for lies to tell since he assumed office as Acting Chairman. Rather than focus on reawakening his completely comatose party, which is unable to provide constructive criticisms expected of a viable opposition, he has resorted to spreading misinformation in a desperate attempt to curry cheap popularity.

In his infertile rambling, Tenebe made wild and completely off-the-mark comments suggesting that Edo State is owing $35 billion. Even if that was what was written for him, he should have known that the figure is wrong and can't be true.

In reality, our debt stock is not a secret and in fact, we are ‘under borrowed’. Emperor Tenebe would have known this if he understood the economics of governance, fiscal responsibility and debt-to-GDP ratio.

The recent facility approved by the State Assembly was to amongst other projects, enable the State Government procure electric buses to enhance the state’s transportation system.

You will recall that Edo State Government introduced free bus rides for its residents five months ago. The free transport scheme has benefitted over 3.4 million Edo residents. The procurement of the electric buses will further cushion the impact of the fuel subsidy removal by the APC-led FG, on the people of the State.

The procurement of these buses further demonstrates the State Government’s commitment to the welfare of Edo people.

Tenebe’s undoing is that he and his party have been so used to looting of the people’s treasury and cannot bear the pain that they would never have access to the State’s purse with which the governor has continued to pursue developmental projects across the state.

It is even more saddening that a party’s chairman only thinks about brick and mortar projects when it comes to development.

Tenebe’s attention must be drawn to the fact that opposition politics is not cynicism. Opposition politics requires intelligence, tact and not childish tantrums.

Edo people know better and are too intelligent to be swayed by such antics, smear campaigns and cheap blackmail. We urge Tenebe and his ilk in the APC to stop chasing shadows but rather funnel those energies to reawakening their comatose party ahead of the September 2024 governorship election.

Subsidy Palliative: Over 3.4m Edo residents benefit from Obaseki’s free bus scheme in five month

The Managing Director of Edo State Transport Authority (ESTA), Mrs. Edugie Agbonlahor, has said over 3.4 million Edo residents have so far benefitted from the free bus service introduced by the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, to cushion the impact of the fuel subsidy removal on the people of State

The free transport scheme was introduced five months ago (September 2023) to run for an initial two-month period and was extended by three months till February 2024, in furtherance of the government’s commitment to the welfare of Edo people.

However, it has been extended to April 2024, following the success recorded in the first two phases of the free transport scheme.

The free transport service covers all intra and intercity routes operated by the State-owned Edo City Transport Services (ECTS), including Auchi – Igarra – Ibillo–Ososo; Uzebba–Ikhin – Otuo, and Abudu-Ubiaja, Abudu-Urhonigbe and Ewohimi to Ewatto.

The intra-city routes are Ramat–Kingsquare; New Benin–Kingsquare; Kingsquare – Ekenwan Road; Kingsquare–Airport Road; Kingsquare–Sapele Road and Kingsquare – Adesuwa, Kingsquare–Ogida; New Benin – Upper Mission; Kingsquare–Ugbowo; Kingsquare–Agbor Road; Kingsquare–Upper Sokponba; New Benin – Ugbowo and New Benin–Aduwawa.

In a statement, the Managing Director of Edo State Transport Authority said the beneficiaries include 95,812 intercity passengers and 330,8157 intra-city passengers.

According to her, “The free bus service introduced by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration to cushion the impact of the fuel subsidy removal on the people of Edo State has continued to record success with over 3,403,969 people benefiting from the scheme in the first five months.

“The 3,403,969 beneficiaries between September 11, 2023, and January 31, 2024, include 95,812 intercity passengers and 330,8157 intra-city passengers.”

“We are glad with the impact of the scheme which has now been extended till April 2024, to continually ease the pressure and transport burden on the people of Edo State, amid the current economic realities.”

Agbonlahor, while reassuring the government’s commitment to the welfare and wellbeing of Edo citizens, urged Edo people to take advantage of the free bus service scheme.
Business / Obaseki Reforms: Edo IGR Grows By N17bn In 2023, Hits N62bn by UdabaPrince100: 3:36pm On Jan 30
Obaseki reforms: Edo IGR grows by N17bn in 2023, hits N62bn

_*…figures reflect over 40 percent growth from 2022, driven by formal sector*_

_*…EIRS boss links revenue growth to gov’s investment drive, others*_

Despite challenging economic crisis fueled by the removal of fuel subsidy, Edo State Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) grew by over 40 percent in 2023, recording N17bn increase from the N45bn generated in 2022.

The Chairman, Edo Taskforce on Internally Generated Revenue, Hon. John Osagie Inegbedion, disclosed this at a press briefing after the 2024 EIRS Management Performance Review (MPR), in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Inegbedion said the 2023 IGR, driven by the State’s formal sector, stood at N62billion, noting that the N17bn growth by Edo State in 2023 accounts for the combined revenue generation performance for 12 States in 2022.

Describing the growth as unprecedented in the history of the State, the EIR boss linked the feat to the business and economic reforms of the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration which has continued to attract investments into the State.

According to him, “In 2022, 12 States did N17b total IGR collection. Thus, Governor Obaseki’s economic reforms and investment drive has propelled Edo economy to grow by the value of what 12 states struggled to collect.”

He said, “The total IGR generated in Edo State for the year 2023 by EIRS, Ministries Departments and Agencies stood at N62,079,123,288.37k. When compared with the 2022 total revenue collection of N45,062,587,439.92k, indicates a growth of N17,016,535,848:46k which was not associated with the informal sector but from the formal sector which occurred within a year.

“This is the first time in the history of revenue administration in the State that revenue will be grown by forty percent (40%) over the preceding year”.

Giving insights to what led to the increased IGR recorded, the EIRS boss noted, “The Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) tax contributed a total of N26.9 billion which indicates N9.44billion over the previous year from the formal sector.

“Withholding Tax collection for the year 2023 was N4.8 billion with a resulting increase of N1.8b over the previous year.

“Other revenues grew by N1.46billion while Ministries Departments and Agency (MDAs) had a growth of N1.8 with a collection of N8.3billion.

“On the contrary, the informal sector wherein most businesses such as the Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprise (MSME), traders, artisans and self-employed operators, had a collection of 1.9billion with a reduction of 312million when compared with 2022 collection of N2.2b.”

The implication of the shortfall, according to Inegbedion “is that EIRS was relaxed on taxing self-employed individuals from the informal sector as individual business owners had some reprieve granted by the Edo State Governor who understands the pains business owners go through as a result of the harsh economic situation and therefore insisted that taxes do not overburdened them”.

He noted that 95% of the increase however came from the formal sector while the informal sector recorded a decline of N312 million.

Inegbedion further noted, “The Governor’s strategic and economic revolution is really having impactful positive growth. Whilst States are struggling to grow their IGR due to the current economic crisis occasioned by removal of fuel subsidies, Edo State economy is flying high due to the foresight of the Governor who long before now has been raising alarm about the impending economic disaster we are currently experiencing. However, he took the initiative and made the necessary wise economic decisions to position Edo for the challenges ahead.”

He added, “We commend the Governor as his investment and economic reforms are showing results as new investments are now paying their PAYE and WHT taxes which are deducted at source. The revenue space is being expanded by the new investment opportunities, we are growing our revenue figures, and we now have more persons coming into the tax net. We encourage Mr. Governor to continue in attracting new investors to the State.

“As a Service, we are making the necessary improvements in tax administration. We have deployed the ERAS technology to make taxpayers’ services, enquiries, tax assessments and payments seamless using electronic means.”

Obaseki to promote economic expansion, drive investments in technology, others in 2024

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his government will, in 2024, focus on building a resilient and sustainable foundation for the reforms, initiatives and programmes embarked on by his administration over the past seven years which has improved livelihoods for millions of Edo people.

The governor, who spoke to journalists in Benin City, the Edo State capital, said the priorities for his government in the New Year include economic growth and stability, deepening the public and civil service transformation and human capital development.

Obaseki noted that, “The ultimate target is to promote economic expansion, technology, arts and culture, social inclusion and economic empowerment for Edo citizens, through sustained investments across various sectors of the economy necessary to drive growth and development. Public Private Partnership (PPP) will continue to dominate our investment initiatives in the New Year.”

According to him, while efforts at economic growth and stability will focus on public safety and security, business environment reforms (Infrastructure Investment, investment in technology) and job creation (technological innovations), attempts at deepening the public and civil service transformation will include technology enhancement, recruitment (phase 2) and training.

“For human capital development, the governor said his administration will focus on education sector reform and health sector transformation in the New Year.”

On plans to drive economic expansion in the State, the governor stated that his government is taking deliberate and bold steps to drive economic and employment enablers.

He noted, “These will enhance the ease of doing business and also facilitate the injection of private capital into the economy to create more opportunities for our teeming youth population.”

“Some of these include investment in our legacy projects including the Benin Enterprise Park, the Benin Port Project and the Trailer Park projects, among others, which will spur economic expansion and growth,” the governor added.

Edo govt stops construction of stalls at Nigeria Police Officers’ Mess in Benin

The Edo State Ministry of Physical Planning, Housing, Urban and Regional Development has sealed the construction site of new stalls at the Nigeria Police Officers’ Mess on Ikpokpan Road, Benin City, for failing to provide approval for the project.

Director of Physical Planning and Development Control, Mr. Enabulele Henry, who led the enforcement team to the site, said that the building contravened extant building laws.

According to him, “The siting of buildings in any part of the State is controlled by us. We have been following up on the development for some time. When they started this work, we went to the site and stopped them on December 6. They are distorting the plan of the GRA. Also, this is government land, which was allocated to the Police, where their officers can relax. They are converting into a commercial property. The increased activity is going to generate traffic, which is going to impact the Third Junction in that axis.

He noted that the government is poised to control the traffic flow in the area and with such a project which would impact negatively in the area, then the purpose of the traffic management initiative will be defeated.

“They came to our office and we asked them to provide their approval before they could do anything. They said they have heard and would revert. But during the public holiday, they went back and started work, even at night. They started another one as well. We have now come out to say they can’t continue.

He added that the government has put in place the Benin City Masterplan and the Edo State Regional Development to manage development in the State so that people don’t build indiscriminately, urging the Police to abide by the laws in the land.

...decries cult-related killings, commences investigation of criminal masterminds

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has felicitated with Edo people and Nigerians on the celebration of the New Year, 2024.

The governor, in his New Year Day broadcast, condemned cult-related killings in the State, saying that security agencies have commenced investigation of the criminal activities of cult groups.

He said, “My dear good people of Edo State, as we celebrate the gift of a new year, I felicitate with everyone, both at home and in the diaspora. We cannot thank God Almighty enough for his grace to have withstood the uncertainties and challenges of the last 12 months.

The governor noted, “The presidential elections tested the foundations of our democracy, while the very difficult and precarious economic situation tested our resilience as a people. In all of these challenges, which we have had to endure, we are glad that Edo state continues to make progress in our journey towards a better society.

Obaseki noted achievements of his administration in the past year 2023, “As a government, we have not been oblivious of the difficulties and sufferings faced by many of our citizens. We have within the limits of our resources provided palliatives to cushion the effects of these hardships.

“These include provision of food items to the most disadvantaged citizens in our social register; providing free public bus services within Benin City and between major cities in the state; payment of 13-month salary to workers and pensioners and the provision of free Wi-Fi in public spaces among other measures.”

He continued, “The state health insurance scheme reached almost 200,000 enrollees, thus further strengthening our healthcare system. As a result of the financing and quality control provided by the Health Insurance Scheme, we continue to improve the quality of our primary health care footprints and work is also progressing on our secondary health care facilities in Benin City and Auchi while work will commence in Uromi in the year 2024.”

“We opened up more job centers to train and assist young people to obtain jobs while we sustained the enabling environment for private businesses to grow. By issuing C of Os and land titles expeditiously, many more citizens were able to have collaterals with which to obtain credit.”

Governor Obaseki condemned renewed killings by rival cult groups, noting, “For most of 2023, Edo state remained relatively safe. However, in the last few days we have witnessed cult related killings. The Government of Edo state will not tolerate any acts that can breach the security which the state currently enjoys.

He said the State Government is working with security agencies to curb the killings, noting, “Working with the office of the Inspector General of Police, we have commenced investigation, arrest and prosecution of sponsors and those who mastermind cult-related killings.”

He said, “We are committed to building on the gains made these past years. We are also taking advantage of the dry season to assist the Federal government to repair its extensive network of roads in Edo State before the next rainy season. I acknowledge the resilience, doggedness, perseverance, and indefatigable spirit of our citizens who, in the face of daunting difficulties, continue to slug it out daily to earn a living, especially amid the current harsh economic realities in our country.

The governor thanked Edo people for their support for his administration, noting, “I want to specially thank Edo people for the trust, confidence and encouragement which you continue to show us over the last seven years. Things may be difficult at this time, but as you already know, tough times don’t last, but tough people do.

“Through the centuries, Edo people have always prevailed over their environment and difficult situations. This time it will not be different.”

He assured: “2024 is another election year in the State. While we must be deliberate in making our choices during the polls in support of the progress we have so far recorded, we should seek for a governor who is ready to sacrifice for the common good of Edo and Nigeria, and persons who have the skills, knowledge and experience to formulate and implement good policies that will move Edo Forward.

“I urge everyone, particularly the political actors, to ensure that they go about their activities in a peaceful and cordial manner. As we enter into the New Year, I urge you to reignite that undying spirit of resilience with vigor and hope and continue to pray for the unity, progress, and prosperity of our dear State and nation.

"Once again, I wish you a very happy and prosperous 2024.

Obaseki hosts journalists, hails contribution to State's growth, devt

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has commended journalists in the State for their critical roles in the growth and development of the State over the past seven years.

Obaseki said this at the end of year party organized by the State government for members of the Edo State Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ).

The governor said, “I am here to thank you very much because you have been one of the pillars of the success of my administration in the past seven years as you have driven us to achieve most of what we have achieved.”

“I don’t see criticism as a bad thing. It helps us check ourselves and what we are doing. You will have a stunted democracy if you don't have a virile press. There is absolutely nothing wrong; there is everything going for a strong, virile and critical press in a democracy. I am one of those who endorse all professional things you do. That is why you don’t see me react or angry about the things I read and hear but to reflect on those views expressed.”

He added, “In the last seven years, I have been blessed with people like you and all I need to say is thank you for all you have done for my administration.”

Noting some of his government’s success over the past seven years, the governor said, “We have so much to be grateful for in the last seven years. In 2016, the image of the State and its people was at its lowest as the confidence of an Edo person had almost disappeared. In 2017, the level of human trafficking and illegal migration showed we don’t have any hope and image was at its lowest. Today, we have re-established the Edo pride, restored our pride as the country looks up to us.

“In a democracy, the people determine what happens to them as nobody from outside can control Edo people. No matter what happens to Nigeria, Edo has a future.”

In his response, the Chairman of Edo NUJ, Festus Alenhke, expressed appreciation to the governor for his support to the journalists, commending him for connecting the press center with fibre optic internet infrastructure, enabling journalists to use free Internet facilities.

He said, “As a journalist, we balance our stories. That is why your media team has not had issues with us, refuting stories from us. We are also using this opportunity to present a compendium of the Edo State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists. We have accredited them to distinguish between who a journalist is and others who are media workers. We have 261 practicing and qualified journalists in Edo State.”

Edo, Lagos, 5 Others named as only Economically viable states in Nigeria

A report by Economic Confidential, a subsidiary of PR Nigeria, has declared seven states, including Edo, Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Kaduna, Kwara and Oyo as the most viable states in Nigeria for 2022.

The Assistant Editor of Economic Confidential, Zekeri Idakwo, disclosed this at a press briefing and presentation of the 2022 Annual States Viability Index Report in Abuja on Monday.

He said the report was compiled from figures released by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, and the Federal Account Allocation Committee.

Idakwo said, “The IGR of the 36 states of the federation totalled N1.8trn in 2022, which was above that of 2021, which was N1.76trn.

“The report further indicates that the IGR of Lagos State of N651bn is higher than that of 30 other states put together whose Internally Generated Revenues are extremely low and poor, compared to their allocations from the Federation Account.

“A total Internally Generated Revenue of N1.5trn from the seven most viable states in 2022, was almost twice the total IGR of 29 states together that merely generated about N650bn.”

A breakdown of the report showed that while Lagos received N370bn from FAAC, the state generated N651bn; Ogun received N113bn and generated N120.5bn; Rivers received N363.4bn and generated N172bn; Kaduna received N155bn in federal allocation, and generated N58bn; Kwara received N99bn and generated N35.7bn; Oyo received N181bn and received N62bn; and Edo received N147bn in federal allocation, and generated N47.4bn.

Six states however, including Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Katsina states, failed to generate up to 10% of the total allocations received from the Federal Government for 2022 and were declared insolvent states.

“The six states that may not survive without the Federation Account due to their extremely poor internal revenue generation of less than 10% compared to their federal allocations are Bayelsa, Katsina and Akwa Ibom, the home states of former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan, Muhammadu Buhari, and the current Senate President Godswill Akpabio respectively. Others are Taraba, Yobe and Kebbi States,” the report added.

Bayelsa was bottom of the list, having received N273bn and generating only N15.9bn, representing 5.81% of the allocations; Kebbi received N119bn and generated N9bn (7.67%); Katsina received N165bn and generated N13bn (7.90%); Akwa Ibom received N360bn and generated N34.8bn (9.66%); Taraba received N103bn and generated N10.2bn (9.91%); while Yobe received N105bn and generated N10.4bn (9.91%).

Idakwo stated that the states’ IGR could be improved “through aggressive diversification of the economy to productive sectors, rather than relying on the monthly Federation Account revenues that largely come from the oil sector”.

He added that the states may not be able to stay afloat outside the monthly allocations, noting that some of the states were unable to attract investments due to socio-political and economic crises including insurgency, kidnapping, armed banditry and herdsmen-farmers clashes.

A socio-political group, Concerned Edo Citizens Forum, has congratulated the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on his nomination as the 2023 Governor of the Year.

The Governor was nominated as Governor of the Year by This Day Newspaper on account of his arduous journey, over the past seven years, to reinvent Edo and place it on the path of accelerated and sustainable economic growth and development, dismantling age-long bottlenecks that have hindered growth among Nigeria’s sub-nationals.

According to the Newspaper, “Governor Godwin Obaseki is a warrior, no doubt. He successfully fought his re-election battle a few years ago, and he is about to face yet another big political and survival battle in a few months when the succession tussle starts.

“However, much of Obaseki’s achievements are as a result of his resolve to do the difficult things – dismantling age-long bottlenecks that have hindered growth among Nigeria’s sub-nationals. Today, he is nominated one of THISDAY’s Men of the Year because he is a governor, who made the hard choices at the most inauspicious time.”

Congratulating the governor, the Convener, Concerned Edo Citizens Forum (CECF), Comrade Roy Oribhabor said the governor in the last seven years embarked on a daunting mission to rebuild the State, implementing policies and delivering projects to better the lives of millions of Edo people and ensure a progressive and prosperous State.

He said, “We heartily felicitate with our performing governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on his nomination by This Day as the Governor of the Year, in recognition of his visionary and exceptional leadership and outstanding performance across all sectors of the State over the past seven years.

“The governor through his innovative policies and transformative projects that dot the nooks and crannies of the State, Governor Obaseki has continued to positively impact the lives of countless citizens and placed our State on the path of accelerated and sustainable growth.

The statement added, “This nomination is an acknowledgment of your undying commitment to the growth and progress of Edo State and we are proud to have a governor like you in our lifetime.”

Asue Ighodalo: Setting Path for Edo’s Future ahead of 2024 Guber Race

*_Emeka Nwachukwu_*

One terrible thing about going the wrong way is that it doesn’t always matter how long or short one stays on the path and the speed he goes on; the endpoint is always predictable—one of sadness, frustration, and regrets.

As the race for the next occupant of Dennis Osadebey Avenue heats up in Edo State, with intrigues and drama of both the absurd and the rational, the import of making the right choice as to who calls the shots in Government House, Benin City, over the next four years comes to the front burner.

Amid the political theatrics and maneuvering, this is critical because the wrong choice could mean a journey down a regrettable path, marked by retrogression, degeneration and missed opportunities, especially given the remarkable strides and progress that have been recorded in the State over the past decade.

It is noteworthy that this progress has been marked by a remarkable journey with economic revolution in agriculture, technology, manufacturing, and the creative industry, among others. One in which the decline in education has been put to a halt and the State transformed into one of Africa’s accelerator States in education, as well as a seismic shift from a civil service State to one attracting billions of dollars of investments from the private sector.

Edo State today has moved from a dark, drab, and dangerous State to one of light, safety, and security, reflecting an environment where citizens can thrive and live life to the fullest, businesses can flourish, and the quality of life is elevated.

It is therefore imperative that the choice of who takes over government in 2024 is essentially hinged on proven track records of performance, particularly in the various aspirants’ private and personal endeavours. Because, as it is often said, ‘he who is faithful with little is most likely faithful with much.’

The selection criteria for the next Edo State Governor should border on vision, pedigree, knowledge, and expertise to navigate through the political and economic headwinds and put the people on the path of much better life.

It is on this pedestal that the candidacy of Dr. Asue Ighodalo, a seasoned lawyer, banker, and accomplished boardroom guru shines through the dark as an array of hope, offering Edo State and its people a trajectory that leads away from despair and towards a future of progress and prosperity.

No doubt, Asue Ighodalo’s profile is quite staggering and his candidature is already unsettling the political stratosphere in Edo State, sending jitters in the camps of other candidates. The grapevines have it that the All Progressive Congress is already wooing a business tycoon and entrepreneur from Owan, Edo North Senatorial District in a bid to find a candidate capable of matching the impressive corporate profile of the former Chairman of Sterling Bank Plc and Chairman of Nigeria Breweries.

Ighodalo, easily appears to be the most prepared, qualified, and competent of other candidates with a clear vision and roadmap to elevate the State to new heights and proffer innovative solutions to the peculiar challenges faced by the people of the State.

With about 40 years of experience in project finance, securities and capital markets, energy and natural resources, mergers and acquisitions, and banking and securitization, Ighodalo strikes out uniquely equipped to safeguard and build upon the foundation laid by Governor Obaseki having been a part of the vision and its realisation over the past 16 years as a member of the Economic Team under former Governor Adams Oshiomhole and now as Chairman of the Alaghodaro Investment Summit, an annual platform to rally investors into the State and showcase the progress being recorded in transforming the state into an investment haven.

Possessing a boardroom expertise arguably akin to the incumbent’s, Ighodalo brings with him a rich reservoir of knowledge and a demonstrable history of steering organisations toward success.

His profound experience in law, banking, and corporate governance uniquely situates him as a competent executor and one with the adeptness to navigate the complexities of various sectors and propel the State forward on a trajectory of accelerated and sustained growth. While acknowledging that other aspirants are distinguished and eminent sons of Edo State, each possessing qualifications and outstanding qualities befitting the role of governor, it becomes crucial for Edo people to see through the augury what lies ahead, scrutinise with discernment and choose the best of the bests-one who is rightly equipped and capable of credibly leading the State over the next four years. The focus should be on identifying a leader who can actively foster the desired progress and bring about a transformative impact on the socio-economic landscape of the State.

In concluding this piece, let me emphasise that while good and effective governance relies on building strong institutions to serve as the framework for politicians to operate in public’s best interest, it also depends on the selection of competent and trustworthy politicians who have the strength of character to uphold the values of the institutions they serve in the first place.

As the momentum continues to gather ahead of the 2024 gubernatorial election, Edo State and its people have the opportunity to choose a leader who is synonymous with experience, integrity, and a commitment to progress. Ighodalo has shown that he is the ideal and right candidate to steer Edo State to greater heights.

Edo people must not overlook the chance to choose and support this one man who truly represents the aspirations, desires, and values of the people—a leader in the person of Dr. Asue Ighodalo.

Edo, Lagos 5 Others named as only Economically viable states in Nigeria

CoP28: Edo strengthens collaboration with partners, reiterates commitment to sustainable environmental practices

The Edo State Government has assured key stakeholders in the environmental sector that the government is committed to responsible commodity production as well as the initiation and implementation of vital initiatives for forest protection and regeneration.

The resolution for sustainable practices was highlighted by the Acting Team Lead, Edo State Oil Palm Programme (ESOPP), Mr. Churchill Oboh, who led the Cop28 team representing Edo State, at the Climate Change Conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The conference brings together various stakeholders and parties to collaboratively explore effective strategies for mitigating the impacts of climate change and enhancing climate financing.

According to Oboh, proactive measures have been taken by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration to foster responsible production of commodities, robust forest protection and conservation, and a steadfast commitment to sustainable and responsible land use practices.

He said the Edo Team at the event engaged in strategic dialogues with esteemed developmental partners, including The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), which is focused on protecting and restoring forests and supporting policy reforms for more sustainable land use.

“Others include Mercuria, a pioneering force in investing and developing innovative forms of low carbon energy, with which we share Edo's goal of encouraging lower carbon energy production and advancing sustainable transportation practices.

“The collaboration extended to Pollination, a distinguished global climate change advisory and investment firm. Standing at the forefront of accelerating the transition towards a net-zero and climate-resilient future, Pollination provides Edo State with invaluable expertise and support in navigating the complexities of climate change initiatives. This collaborative effort reinforces the region's commitment to proactive and impactful climate action.”

He added: “We had interactive sessions with Ruth Kennedy, the Forest and Land Use Adviser to the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office, and another with the Head of Communication for Proforest, Ali Merifield. We emphasized the remarkable achievements and efforts made in Edo State so far which include the repeal of the forestry law and setting up of the forestry commission, the success story of the Africa Sustainable Commodity Initiative (ASCI), completion of a comprehensive forest inventory, and identification of areas for forest regeneration through the Land Use and Land Cover Analysis (LULCA).”
