Health / The Prize Of “Delivering Like The Hebrew Women”- Nigerian Health Blog by udomoh(m): 9:32am On Jul 28, 2019
These sad stories was shared by doctors whose pregnant patients rejected C-section because they wanted to “deliver like the Hebrew women”.

Nonso the Aproko Doctor™@aproko_doctor
I know a woman who died because her womb tore and the baby entered her abdomen, her pelvis was too small to allow the baby pass. She died before they made it to the hospital. They told her that CS is not her portion, that the doctors are using CS to make money from people.

youngmedicmum@youngmedicmum

This type of case.. every medical doctor in Nigeria has at least one experience. Either as a student or as an intern. My first was as a 500l student. Previous scar, rejected cs. She was brought in dead, baby dead.

Elder Richy (Dr)@Richtyns
I booked a patient for elective C/S on account of Fetal weight of 5.4kg. Her pastor and relative kicked against it and she went to a TBA. Had a ruptured uterus, baby went into the abodomen, crushed vital organs By the time she was rushed back, it was too late lost mother & child.

Adeniran olayemi@ProfdotOlayemi
I scheduled a patient for CS due to previous CS and big baby. She didn’t show up. Was rushed to the hospital 2 days after. They tried vaginal birth with misoprostol. Uterus gave way. She passed on with the baby. One of my horrible days ever.

Mr. Solution@SOLUBABA8
People will keep dying out of ignorance. I recently heard one pastor telling her congregation that CS is not for them, reason being that the Bible has promised that they will deliver like the Hebrew women. Even as a Microbiologist, I understand that Bible verse more than d pastor

Highly Classified@ispeakmymind234
It’s sad to see people risk their lives like that… A close friend recently lost a baby because they(my guy and his wife) were trying to show that she could have a Veejay delivery… There’s no award for that shit people!

E_kHaYnNeR@evraaikay40
CS is not your portion, they say! You’ll deliver like the Hebrew women, they say, forgetting that the phrase “delivered like the Hebrew women” was a LIE told to Pharaoh by the Egyptian midwives, as their consciences couldn’t deal with killing babies. Dem go dey alright Las Las!
Now, whatever any PASTOR or seemingly religious person quotes from the Bible, go and read that verse of the Bible YOURSELF. Read the verse, 4 verses before it, 4 verses after it, Infact, the WHOLE CHAPTER, if that helps you to understand better.

Ife @Fe_ducklin
I knew a Jehovah’s witness who lost so much blood during child birth and the doctors begged her family to allow them give her blood but they refused because it’s against their doctrine. She died some hours later.

Ph_tailor@Virmachclothing
I Know a lady who died out of ignorance because her pastor told her she’d give birth through VB, she died while the local midwives she registered with we’re forcing the baby to come through labour.

Ogunjimi Babajide Adeniji@fjiwad
Just the exact case of my aunty in 1995, her pastor prophesied against the MD’s advice of CS. It was a horrible end. We lost my aunty & the baby. Faith is real & i won’t say don’t believe your pastor’s prophesy but let’s balance it with medical recommendations. It’s just one life.

Virtuous Felix@FelixVirtuous
We learnt our lesson from my mom’s experience. Dad, a pastor totally kicked against CS, baby weighed 5.5, mom had to do it the normal way. Story short, mom had dislocation that she couldn’t walk for three month, baby had dislocation too around her shoulder.Glad they are fine now.

raph_ai@raph_ai
My uncle lost a baby last month because his wife insisted that she would have a vaginal delivery. The baby died and was brought out of her womb through CS. That was my Uncle’s first child, although the lady has a child before and that child was through CS. They’re now separated.

Health / World Hepatitis Day: Are Hepatitis B And C Curable? An Overview- Dr Seyitan by udomoh(m): 8:31am On Jul 28, 2019
Are Hepatitis B and C curable?

Hepatitis is simply put, inflammation of the liver, that is, the body’s response to an insult to the liver. Several agents can “insult” the liver, from toxins to chemicals (alcohol) to infectious agents like viruses and parasites.

However, the focus of this article is on hepatitis caused by viruses. Of the various hepatotripic (liver-loving) viruses, hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus stand out, because of the ability of these viruses to persist in the liver for long periods of time, causing long term damage and deterioration to the liver over many years. This often leads to liver failure or liver cancer (hepatocelluar carcinoma).

These viruses are transmitted via blood (sharing or sharps, accidental needle stick injuries, transfusion of unscreened blood etc.) and body fluids like vaginal secretions and semen.

Infected persons can present acutely with anorexia, nausea, vomiting, body aches, low-grade fever before developing yellowish discoloration of their sclerae (white part of the eyes), skin and mucous membranes. In the late stages, patients could develop signs of chronic liver disease such as abdominal swelling with fluid (ascites), swelling of the feet (pedal edema), muscle wasting, redness of the palms (palmar erythema), enlargement of the liver and spleen etc.

It could also be asymptomatic, leaving the sufferer unaware of the infection, often for many years before they are discovered incidentally by screening.
Any individual experiencing any of these symptoms, or who is at risk of exposure to these viruses can walk into a health centre and have some screening tests done i.e. Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBSAg), Hepatitis C virus antibody (anti-HCV) and other ancillary tests like the liver function test and abdominal ultrasound (more useful for those with the infection).

Anyone with a positive HBSAg test would be required to do a full Hepatitis B panel (Hepatitis B surface antigen, Hepatitis B e antigen, Hepatitis B core antibody IgM and IgG, Hepatitis B e antibody, Hepatitis B Virus DNA), which would determine the phase of infection and guide treatment.

On the other hand, those who test positive to Hepatitis C would proceed to quantify the virus by doing a viral load which would also guide treatment.
Most interestingly, the treatment of these viral hepatitides (plural for hepatitis) are experiencing major breakthroughs, with new drugs being discovered and cures being achieved. Hepatitis B remains yet uncurable, but all hope is not lost.

New antiviral agents are being discovered and current ones are able to suppress viral load to the barest minimum… enough to prevent progression of the disease to end stage/ end game.

It however gives me great pleasure to write that Hepatitis C CAN and has been CURED in many individuals. Initially, for many decades only medications like ribavirin and interferon were available, with disappointing cure rates and side effects that made “the cure of the disease more grievous than the endurance of the same.”

The newer drugs and drug combinations are however doing the trick more conveniently (oral administration), cheaper (than prolonged suffering and death), with much less side effects and for only about 8-12 weeks.

These wonder combos include Ledispasvir/sofosbuvir (Harvoni), Elbasvir/grazoprevir (Zepatier), Ombitasvir/paritaprevir/Ritonavir/Dasabuvir (Viekira Pak), Ombitasvir/paritaprevir/Ritonavir (Technivie) and Sofosbuvir/velpatasvir (Epclusa). Combination therapy is much more efficacious than monotherapy.

Like the adage goes, prevention is indeed better than cure and this holds true for hepatitis B and C virus infection.
Hepatitis B vaccine should be given to new borns and immunoglobulins added for babies born to infected mothers. Hepatitis B vaccine for adults are also available, some of which last for life.

Other preventive strategies generally involve having respect for our bodies and treating our livers nicely, by avoiding alcohol (especially the excess of it), self medication, sharing of sharps (like razors, nail cutters, hair clippers, ear rings etc), adequate protection during sexual intercourse (especially for an unmarried couple where their statuses are not known), and avoiding illicit (intravenous) drug use.

Also, blood for transfusion should be well screened and health workers should be extra careful to avoid unprecedented needle stick injuries and avoid unnecessary contact with blood and body fluids of patients.

On a final note, when has routine health checks ever harmed anybody? Do well to get yourself screened. Better safe than sorry.

Health / That Mouth Blister Is NOT Malaria But Herpes Labialis- Nigerian Health Blog by udomoh(m): 3:53pm On Jul 27, 2019
HERPES LABIALIS OR COLD SORES UNCOVERED!

Patient: I have a sore by the side of my lips, they (Medics) said it’s Malaria.

Every Medic: LIESSSSSSSS! We never said such.

Here’s a an informative and hopefully fun thread on Herpes Simplex Virus.

HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS (HSV) : a subliminal bad guy that can be majorly grouped into two.

HSV-1 : This is mostly characterized by the presence of a sore on the lip.
Most commonly attributed to Malaria (by my Country people) and this is FALSE.

The sore on the lip caused by HSV-1 are commonly called ‘cold sores’ or ‘fever blisters’ because the virus can surface again during cold or heat. It can also surface again due to; stress, weak immunity from diabetes, HIV, cancer, etc .

HSV-1 can be transferred through kissing (body contact with oral fluids)

The sore usually heals, but that doesn’t mean HSV has been cured.

Rather, it goes to relax on vacation island known as the NERVES ( bad guy I tell you).

HSV-1 can also affect the eyes or genitals, but MOSTLY the lips.

HSV-2: This bastard is Sexually Transmitted. It also can be characterized by sores in the genitals of the infected person, the anus too sometimes, but as earlier said, the sores heal and the virus goes into hiding.

HSV-1 And HSV-2 infection is for life and there isn’t any CURE

HSV-2 a STD has chances of being transferred even through the use of condoms (courtesy the bare exposed parts).

HSV-1 And HSV-2 infections are for life. There are no VACCINES nor CURE, just management and prevention. Acyclovir tablets or creams may help relieve symptoms.

It is highly deadly in children and can be transferred from Mother to Child too

Fun fact: Over 50% Of Americans have HERPES. (Meaning no frolicking at the beach Of Miami Florida anyhow). Source: WHO
Conclusion: Stay protected sexually, note visible sores on yourself (lips and genitals mostly), consult an awesome Medic, If positive avoid body contact with others.

Footnote: In a case of reoccurring sores, please visit your Doctor, because it shows that your immune system might be or is low and this can be due to several factors.

So I reiterate; kindly pay a visit to your nearest hospital in cases of reoccurring sores.

Health / Doctor Stephen Ijeuwe Collapses, Dies In FMC Yenogoa Over Lack Of Defibrillator by udomoh(m): 4:07pm On Jul 26, 2019
Doctor collapses & dies in FMC Yenogoa because of lack of defibrillator…

The late Dr. Stephen Ijeuwe was a resident doctor @ FMC, Abeokuta.

He suffered a cardiac arrest and died in FMC Yenogoa due to lack of defibrillator.

Being a secretary of ARD Abeokuta, he was in FMC Yenogoa for NARD NEC meeting.

Medical doctor and social media influencer Dr. Olufunmilayo left many people shocked after he narrated the story of how a doctor, Dr. Stephen Ijeuwe, died inside a hospital – According to the story, the doctor suffered a heart attack and collapsed but there was defibrillator to resuscitate –

According to reports, the incident occurred in a Federal Medical Center where the deceased went for NARD meeting.

Dr. Stephen was the Association of Resident Doctors Secretary, Abeokuta branch. Before his death, he was a resident doctor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta.
It is no news that the state of health facilities in Nigeria is in shambles and the story of how a doctor collapsed and eventually died inside a hospital, only seems to remind people how dangerous the implications of not having proper health care facilities really is.

According to Twitter user @DrOlufunmilayo, a doctor recently died after he suffered a cardiac arrest and died inside the hospital after hospital staff could not provide a defibrillator to shock him back to life.
He wrote: “A doctor collapsed yesterday inside a hospital. And a whole “Federal Medical Centre” did NOT have a defibrillator (a machine that shocks the heart to revive it) They travelled to GovtHouse Clinic to borrow one. By then, the doctor died. See, human life has NO value in Nigeria.

The National Association of Resident Doctors( NARD) statement on the tragic death

“On behalf of NARD NECOMM, NECOUN and entire resident doctors all over the country, the President Of NARD Dr Olusegun Olaopa (PSO) commiserates with Ijeuwe Family ,ARD FMC Abeokuta and NMA Ogun State on the death of *Dr Stephen Ijeuwe*(Secretary ARD FMC Abeokuta)

*He died while participating actively in the ongoing JULY NEC in Yenagoa*

Until his death, he was a registrar in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology FMC Abeokuta.

Your loss has deeply saddened us but be rest assured that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Please accept our heartfelt condolences from NARD and May God rest his soul”.

Dr Anthony CHUKWUNONSO UDE
Sec Gen NARD
25.07.19.

According to Dr.Olunfunmilayo, “a defibrillator is a basic life saving equipment. It should be like paracetamol or cotton wool in any hospital. Here in the UK, petrol stations, cinemas, football stadiums, games arena, train stations, etc all have a defibrillator. But in Nigeria, an FMC doesn’t have it. Shame. I can’t get my head round it”.

“This is a doctor who collapsed IN A HOSPITAL.

Not outside a hospital.

Yet the most important equipment to save his life was nowhere available.

This hospital has patients on their wards- if anyone collapses- that’s the end too. We are in deep shit.

When people collapse outside hospital, the advice we always give is “rush them to the hospital” If a hospital doesn’t even have something as basic as a defibrillator, how is that an hospital?”

“Nigeria treats human lives with levity and watches its citizens die like chickens.

The shameful part is NO investigation or changes will be made to correct this clear madness.

That same FMC in Bayelsa will still NOT get any defibrillator, it would be a lot of “Eya” and “na wa o”, and life continues till the next person dies”.

“This is a disgraceful country.

I sincerely pray God would console and comfort this young doctor’s family IF it was a sane country- that young doctor, just like millions of Nigerians who die avoidable deaths- could have been saved. Nigeria kills people and only brings tears to their families.

It is saddening.” He said.

Health / Bleeding Is NOT Evidence Of Virginity-dr Olufunmilayo by udomoh(m): 12:08pm On Jul 26, 2019
Bleeding is NOT evidence of virginity

Bleeding mainly depends on type of hymen, force of sex and wetness of the female vagina.

Bleeding is NOT evidence of virginity.

It may just mean rough sex on a “dry” woman.

It’s ignorant, unfair and judgmental to assume bleeding is equal to virginity.

Do you want to drink the blood?

On a more serious note, some women will bleed after the first sex.

Some will not.

Both are PERFECTLY NORMAL.

It is NOT the blood that makes a woman a virgin. It is the first sexual experience- if it has happened or not.

Besides why is there an obsession over female virginity?

The bleeding as I said earlier is a result of many factors- including tearing of hymen (which may NOT happen in all women having sex the first time), dryness of the vagina or roughness of the sex.

Some of these factors can make a woman bleed.

And may NOT mean it’s her first sex.

For some women, the first sex experience comes with pain and bleeding.

For some, pain but no bleeding.

For a few minority, no pain no bleeding.

ALL of the above are perfectly normal.

The fact is there are other things that tear a woman’s hymen and she may not even know at all.

Women who do horse riding, vigorous sports, or those who use tampons for instance may have shown torn the hymen over time and they will not know it.

They may not bleed at all when having sex the first time.
And that doesn’t mean they are liars. Or non virgins. Pls let’s note.

Policing a woman’s hymen by having it regularly checked (like some parents do) or expecting to see blood at the first sex is very judgmental, demoralising and unfortunate.

We must be aware that medically, there are many reasons a woman may or may not bleed during her first sex.

Let’s use the same energy spent telling women to be virgins to tell young men to be virgins as well.

And let’s teach our children and young people everywhere that Virginity is expected of both men and women- not just women- IF indeed we put premium on virginity as a society.

Health / New! FDA Bans Breast Cancer Causing Implants, Orders Recall From Circulation by udomoh(m): 1:32pm On Jul 25, 2019
Food and Drug Agency withdraws Textured Allergan Breast Implants in US and Worldwide.

The implants causes a deadly type of breast cancer called lymphoma of the breast.

Of the 573 persons down with the cancer, 84 percent (481) had used the breast implant called the Allergan implants at one point of their lives.

More than 33 deaths recorded already.

Allergan is recalling all BioCell textured breast implant products in circulation from the United States and around the world, owing to the risk for breast implant–associated anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).

This is following an announcement from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The agency notes that to date, 573 unique cases of BIA-ALCL and 33 deaths have been reported around the world, up from 457 cases and 24 deaths in February 2019.
Of the 573 unique cases of BIA-ALCL, 481 (84%) have been attributed to Allergan implants.
Of the 33 patient deaths, 12 of the 13 patients for whom the manufacturer of the implant is known are confirmed to have had an Allergan breast implant at the time of their BIA-ALCL diagnosis.
“Based on the currently available information, including the newly submitted data, our analysis demonstrates that the risk of BIA-ALCL with Allergan BioCell textured implants is approximately six times the risk of BIA-ALCL with textured implants from other manufacturers marketing in the US,” the FDA said in a statement.

The recall includes the Natrelle Saline-Filled breast implants, Natrelle Silicone-Filled breast implants, Natrelle Inspira Silicone-Filled breast implants, and Natrelle 410 Highly Cohesive Anatomically Shaped Silicone-Filled breast implants.

The recall also includes tissue expanders used by patients prior to breast augmentation or reconstruction, including Natrelle 133 Plus Tissue Expander and Natrelle 133 Tissue Expander with Suture Tabs.

“The recall will help ensure that unused products are removed from suppliers and doctors’ offices,” the FDA said.

Already Withdrawn From Europe

Allergan took its textured breast implants off the market in all European countries in December 2018 after a French regulatory body ordered a recall. It pulled its BioCell textured breast implants off the market in Canada in May 2019.

However, the FDA announced in early May 2019 that it would allow sales of textured breast implants to continue. At that time, the FDA said that on the basis of available evidence, it did not believe the device met the standard for banning as set forth in the US Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
That announcement followed a 2-day FDA advisory committee meeting on breast implants in March 2019.

On the basis of the latest data, the agency has now concluded that pulling the textured implants from the market is “necessary at this time to protect the public health,” FDA Principal Deputy Commissioner Amy Abernethy, MD, PhD, said in today’s announcement.

Jeff Shuren, MD, JD, director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, said the agency is continuing to evaluate whether the risk of developing BIA-ALCL is limited to specific models of textured breast implants or applies to all textured breast implants.

“We continue to advise women and health care professionals that the use of breast implants is associated with a risk of developing BIA-ALCL and that the risk is greater with textured implants,” said Shuren.
The FDA also issued today a safety communication outlining the known risks and what steps healthcare providers and patients should consider when monitoring for symptoms of BIA-ALCL, including breast pain, discharge and swelling. The FDA does not recommend removal of the recalled implants for women who do not have symptoms.

The FDA has been monitoring the issue since it first identified the possible association between breast implants and BIA-ALCL in 2011. “Since that time, we have worked to increase awareness and encourage reporting of all cases to the FDA so that we could continue to monitor this potential safety signal,” said Abernethy.

Politics / 5 Reasons Buhari Dropped Isaac Adewole As Health Minister by udomoh(m): 10:15am On Jul 25, 2019
Reasons Buhari dropped Isaac Adewole as Health Minister

The ministerial list has been released by the President and nominees are currently being screened by the Senate. About 60 percent of ministers returned but conspicuously missing on the list is Prof Isaac Adewole, the immediate past minister of health and former vice chancellor of the prestigious University of Ibadan.

The Nigerian Health Blog has done some researches into the reasons the man described as ‘academically brilliant’ was dropped by President Muhammadu Buhari and here are our findings.

1. Poor performance

The Nigerian Health Blog can unequivocally tell you that Prof. Isaac Adewole even with his academic qualifications and wealth of experience performed below par. In his time, our health indices dropped from bad to worse. Aside from building and upgrading the cancer center in Lagos University Teaching (LUTH), facilities in other teaching hospitals and Federal Medical Centres across the country are in shambles or at best inadequate. In his time, the chances of a patient having access to specialist care became slimmer and our health indices which was already bad became terrible .

2. Low Health Budgets/ Poor budgetary implementations

Professor Folorunsho Adewole throughout his 4 year stinct as health minister failed to acknowledge population growth in his budgetary allocation and consistently churned out budgets that is at best suitable for just buying an MRI machine and nothing more. Between 2016 to 2019, the budget he proposed and passed to meet the health needs of over 200million Nigerians were: N221.7 billion in 2016, 138 billion in 2017, N356.46bn in 2018 and N365.76bn in 2019.

His budgetary allocation does not even meet up to 5 percent of the total National budget. This was a complete mockery of the Abuja declaration or WHO recommendation which clearly stated health budget should be 15 percent of the total National allocation.

3. Increased industrial action in the health sector during his tenure as Minister

Prof Adewole’s stinct as Minister was dogged with one strike or the other in the health sector. If it is not the Nigeria Medical Association today, it will be the Joint Health Workers Union tomorrow. Mind you, a good number of Nigerians die or suffer severe complications during these unending strike actions. He also failed to resolve the unhealthy rivalry between the doctors and other health care providers that have long diminished health care delivery in this country . Don’t forget that he was fingered in the crisis that rocked the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

4. Brain Drain/Massive exodus of doctors from Nigeria

You may not appreciate the import of this. But go to our hospitals, the place is scanty of professional nurses and doctors. Most Nigerian doctors and nurses have left the shores of this country for greener pastures abroad. The ones you see are either writing international medical exams to the UK, US, Australia, Canada, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Dubai etc or are already on their way out. The main reasons for this exodus are simple: poor income, poor facilities and poor specialist training. This migration though has been a problem that pre-dated the minister but it skyrocketed in his time.

And finally, the one that nailed him and cast his position as Minister in bad light which is still trending is number 5.

5. “Not all doctors will be specialists, some can be farmers”

While answering questions from journalists in a video that has been circulating on social media, the minister was asked why Nigerian doctors have to wait for a long time to get residency training.

In response, the minister casually said that all doctors cannot become specialists and can try their hands at other things like farming or politics. While still failing to answer to question, he said his tailor makes the best gowns despite being a doctor.

He said, “It might sound selfish, but we can’t all be specialists. We can’t. Some will be farmers, some will be politicians.

“The man who sews my gown is a doctor. He makes the best gown. And some will be specialists, some will be GPs, some will be farmers.”

What more do you need to drop a minister other than above?

Oga please go to the hospital now! That is a purulent otitis media and can lead to brain abscess and meningitis (spread to the brain) with life threatening complications. It is a SERIOUS condition. Please. That discharge from the ear smells so bad. It can lead to permanent deafness too.

Please Nairalanders, if someone opens a thread for a disease condition he or she or relative is suffering, the best you can do is tell the person to go to the hospital.

I can't imagine somebody said this condition is not serious. We play with everything.

Boss your brother needs to see an ENT specialist ASAP.

Read more about otitis media hear. When you are done. You will run to the hospital with your brother.Thank you

Health / Woman Had Chemo & Breast Removal Surgery For A Cancer She Never Had by udomoh(m): 6:37pm On Jul 23, 2019
Talk about medical misdiagnosis.. A woman wrongly diagnosed of breast cancer, had her two breast removed, had implant inserted, suffer complications of chemotherapy and other treatment modalities

A 28-year-old woman, Sarah Boyle had undergone months of chemotherapy and having her breasts removed, only to be told she didn’t actually have cancer.

Boyle has been diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer by doctors at Royal Stoke University Hospital at the end of 2016 and started treatment to battle the cancer, reports Independent UK.

However, several months later the hospital realised its error. This was after the mother-of-two had already had extensive treatment, a double mastectomy (removal of both breasts) and reconstructive surgery.

Asides the trauma of the treatments, Boyle is also faced with the fact that her breast implants increases her risk of developing cancer in the future.

“The past few years have been incredibly difficult for me and my family,” said Ms Boyle, who lives in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, with husband Steven, 31, and her two children Teddy and Louis.

“Being told I had cancer was awful, but then to go through all of the treatment and surgery to then be told it was unnecessary was traumatising.

“As if that wasn’t bad enough, I am now worried about the possibility of actually developing cancer in the future because of the type of implants I have and I am also worried about complications that I may face because of my chemotherapy.

Ms Boyle instructed specialist medical negligence lawyers to investigate the case, who have now secured an admission of liability from University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust.

Speaking with the Independent UK, the hospital said it had apologised to Ms Boyle, adding that extra safeguard measures were now in place.

Ms Boyle said she suffered psychological trauma as a result of her ordeal and still has ongoing symptoms caused by her treatment.

She was initially told that her cancer treatment may lead to fertility issues, but went on to have a second child, Louis, who is now seven months old.

However, she was unable to breastfeed him because of her treatment.

Ms Boyle was aged 25 when she was misdiagnosed by doctors following the birth of her youngest child.

Health / Ministerial List: Meet The Next Likely Health Minister(s) by udomoh(m): 5:46pm On Jul 23, 2019
Who is going to be Nigeria’s next likely health minister?

The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari today formally forwarded the long awaited ministerial list to the National Assembly for screening and confirmation .

As a medical doctor and a health information expert, the names that first caught my attention are the individuals that will likely be our next health health minister.

The ministerial list containing 43 individuals have 3 qualified medical doctors in it. No one needs a soothsayer to him that the next health minister will come for among these 3 individuals.

I decided to do quick review of their chances of clinching the coveted position and biography of these likely health minister-designate or ministerial nominees… .. below . ….

1. Osagie Ehanire

Dr. Osagie E. Ehanire is an outstanding surgeon and holds an (MD) of college of Medicine, Ludwig Maximillians University, Munich. He also holds post graduate Diplomas from the Teaching Hospital of the University of Düsseldorf and Essen, Germany in the areas of Anesthesiology, General Surgery, and Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery. Dr. Osagie has served on various medical Boards both within and outside Nigeria.

He was Senior Registrar, Clinical Instructor, University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Member of the old Bendel and Edo States Hospital Management Board, Consultant Surgeon, Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria, Clinical Course instructor, Fracture Internal Fixation course, BG Accident Hospital, Duisburg, Germany. He co-authored the orthopaedic book “The severely injured limb” edited By John Ackroyd.

He is a Nigerian from Edo State who served as the immediate minister of State under Prof. Isaac Adewole. He is a current trustee of the TY Danjuma Foundation.

Chances: High. I give him a 50 percent chance of clinching the position given his below par performance of the previous 4 years. There could be surprises anyway but I doubt.

2. Chris Ngige

A former governor of Anambra state, former senator, and the immediate past minister of Labour and Employment.

Born on August 8, 1952 and a medical doctor by profession, he graduated from the University of Nigeria-Nsukka in 1979. After graduation, Ngige immediately went into the civil service, serving at the National Assembly and State House clinics at different times. He retired in 1998 as a Deputy Director in the Federal Ministry of Health.

His chances: Slim. He is not a consultant (only a doctor will understand this). His controversial statement on Nigeria having “surplus doctors” in spite of the glaring shortage will work against him.

3. Adeleke Olurunnimbe Mamora

Described as the master of parliamentary procedures, Mamora was born on 16 February 1953. He obtained a B.Sc, Health Sciences, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) University of Ife, Ile-Ife and became a Health Practitioner. He was Medical Director of a Medical Centre (1987 – 1998), and a Company Medical Adviser (1988 – 1992).

Since then has has been a speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly for 8 years, a senator that sponsored the bills on Tenure of Office, Surgeon-General of Nigeria, and repeal and amendment of the Tobacco Control Act.

He is currently the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Agency (NIWA).

Chances :Very high. About 60 percent. But there could be surprises. His low point is that he is not a consultant. Aside that, he is the next likely health minister.

As a doctor, I have seen patients that were treated for hepatitis b virus and the viral load reduced to the nearest minimum to the extent the patient could no longer infect others. That is what most medical doctors now call cure.

Truly, reducing hepatitis b viral load does not mean you no longer have the virus. You can achieve this level of "cure" by taking your drugs judiciously. The problem with hepatitis b drugs is that they are quite too expensive.

You can read more on cure for hepatitis b and C on this link below.

Health / 4 Prominent Sick Nigerians Femi Otedola Has Paid Their Medical Bills (photos) by udomoh(m): 7:57am On Jul 23, 2019
Billionaire Femi Otedola is not just known for eating ice cream with his daughters in the streets of Italy, neither is he only known for always supporting the Super Eagles with mouth watering sums in major footballing tournaments, he has in the past couple of months showed “milk of kindness” to 4 prominent sick Nigerians (who in their prime brought fame and glory to this country) by paying their medical bills and even in some situations sending them abroad for treatment. He has showed great act of philanthropy and needs to be commended.

Below is a list of the famous Nigerians Femi Otedola who recently sold his stakes in Forte oil has extended footed their medical bills with pictures.

1. Sadiq Daba

Nigerian billionaire Femi Otedola in his magnanimity offered to foot the medical bills of ailing Nollywood actor, Sadiq Daba. The actor was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) recently in the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.

For many years, the actor was battling with prostate cancer and traveled to the United kingdom for medical treatment only to return to Nigerian in 2017. After living the semblance of a normal life for a short two years, Daba took ill again.

Here is his statement on Sadiq Daba ill health: “I was saddened to hear that he had taken ill again after overcoming his challenges from prostate cancer just two years ago. From the news report, I gathered that he was rushed to the Emergency unit of Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) after being diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
I must say that even though I don’t know Mr. Daba personally, he is a face I am familiar with through the old TV drama production ‘Cock Crow at Dawn’ which I used to watch while growing up. I was moved by a sense of nostalgia and concern when I read of his medical situation recently and decided to take over his medical bills. He has been visited and arrangements are being made to support him.”

2. Christian Chukwu

Former Nigeria captain and coach Christian Chukwu in April travelled to England for medical treatment.

The 68-year-old who captained Super Eagles to their first Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980 needed $50,000 for his medical care overseas.

Nigeria Football Federation sought financial support for Chukwu and billionaire Femi Otedola came to his rescue by providing the money for his trip abroad.

Thanking the oil magnate for his kind gesture, coach Chukwu in his words said: “Otedola has made me, I can play football again,” Chukwu said jokingly when he paid the oil mogul a visit in Lagos on Friday.

“If you saw me before I left for London, you won’t believe I’ll be here talking to you. I think I won’t be making a mistake if I say after God, it’s Otedola in my life”.

3. Peter Fregene

Billionaire businessman and chairman of Forte Oil, Femi Otedola, extended his hand of generosity as he took it upon himself to pay the medical expenses of ailing former Nigerian goalkeeper, Peter Fregene who was bedridden as a result of stroke.

The 72-year-old Fregene who represented Nigeria in the 1968 Olympic games, has been seriously ill in Sapele, Delta state. According to reports, he had been bedridden since 2016.

Otedola got to know about the footballer’s ailing condition. He sent his representatives to Sapele, Delta state where the footballer stays to check on him and he has since gave orders for Fregene to be airlifted from the airport in Edo state to Lagos state where he received medical attention at the Reddington hospital located in Ikoyi, Lagos state.

4. Olaotan Victor

Olaotan Victor who is best known for his role as Fred Ade-Williams in the long-running television drama, ‘Tinsel’, and the movie “Three Wise Men’’, was reportedly involved in a ghastly road traffic accident in 2016 and required $50,000 for his medical treatment in 2018 following protracted ailment.

A go-fund-me account was opened on his behalf for friends, fans and industry colleagues to donate towards his treatment.
Mofe-Damijo took to his Instagram page @mofedamijo on Wednesday morning of 2018 and shared the uplifting news that Otedola would clear all the medical expenses.

He said, “so, a few days ago, I reached out to @femiotedola asking for help for my friend and brother, Victor and just this morning Femi calls to tell me that he would take care of ALL of Victor’s bills.

“He told me that he is already on it and that his people are talking to Victor’s wife. Is God not awesome?? I can’t even contain my joy and gratitude.

“Thank you Femi @femiotedola you are a man and half and thank you to my young friend @gbenroajibade for championing this cause.

Olaotan has long been treated and his condition has greatly improved.

Thank you Femi Ote$.

Health / Stop Inserting Spoons In The Mouths Of Convulsing Patients! -dr Ayeni by udomoh(m): 6:32am On Jul 22, 2019
Doctor dispels age long myth and practices of arresting convulsion or of administering convulsion first aid.

Medical doctor and social media influencer has warned parents to desist from inserting spoons and other objects in the mouths of convulsing patients saying it does more harm than good. He shed light on bad first aid practices for seizures amongst other things.

Read his tweets below…….

CLENCHING OF TEETH DURING CONVULSION DOESN’T KILL!

Stop inserting hard objects like spoons, wood, fingers, etc into the mouth of a convulsing person.

This practice does more harm than good as it can dislodge the dentures(teeth) & cause aspiration or worse death.

Once saw a woman put her fingers in between her child’s mouthto prevent the teeth clenching.

The kid bit her hand so hard.

She was in so much pain, while shouting for someone to help her get spoon.

What do you do when you have a person having a fit around you?

First, don’t panic!

Yeah, easier said than done.

It’s a fact that even a 1 minute fit could appear like 4 hours to the people around especially parents & siblings.

Ensure the environment around the person is safe.

If possible, move the person to a soft bed.

Place the person in a left lateral position i.e.

Lying on the left side

Remove tight clothings or loose buttons around the neck

Look at the chest to ensure the person is breathing

Don’t try to restrain, it could lead to fracture.

Don’t rub aboliki, onions or pepper on the person’s face

Do not pour water on the person

Do not pour palm oil or olive oil on the person’s mouth.

Don’t put the legs of the person on fire

Lastly, relax!

Most Convulsion will abort on its own.

Take the person to the hospital as soon as possible for proper evaluation & management.

When someone objected that the reason persons insert spoons into the patient mouth is to prevent injury to the tongue….. .

He replied saying: “Thank you for your opinion. It’s difficult for the tongue to protrude out during a convulsing episode. The tongue will naturally retract during muscular contractions & appear smaller”.

If the teeth is clenched, how does the tongue get involved? He asked.

During convulsion, there’s usually contraction of the many muscles of the body including the tongue. The tongue gets retracted and appears smaller, making it difficult for it to protrude during the episode of convulsion”.

I think this theory of inserting spoon into the mouth originated from the belief that: “Convulsions don’t usually result in death but the tongue could be damaged forever”.

Our African mothers don’t know that the tongue takes care of itself, they only aim to protect the tongue while the child calms. Even if you tell them the tongue would be smaller, they’ll say prevention is better.
I’ve seen hundreds of patients with convulsion & their intention is basically to prevent clenching of the teeth because that’s what the initial panic is all about. Most patients with convulsion already have clenched teeth & what people do is force the mouth open with hard objects.

What causes convulsions?

There are many causes of convulsion.

High fever is the commonest cause of convulsion in children aged 6months to 5 years

Other causes of convulsion include birth trauma, head injury, electrolyte derangements, organ damage, low blood sugar, & many others

When asked to differentiate between convulsions and epilepsy……and it is hereditary..

He responded: “Convulsion is the jerk, a fit while epilepsy is abnormal discharge of neurons in the brain. All epilepsy will result in convulsion but not all convulsion is from epilepsy. Commonest cause of convulsion in a child from 6 months to 5 years is high body temperature. It isn’t hereditary, however it could run in families”.

Does epilepsy have a cure?

Most cases have a cure when the accurate diagnosis of the type of epilepsy is made, right medications used and patients comply with medications.

What kills an epileptic?

More people die from intervention from untrained personnel. Most patients do not die from the illness itself. Most die from complications of the illness.

Health / 48 Million Nigerians At Risk Of River Blindness- Doctor by udomoh(m): 3:21am On Jul 21, 2019
Dr. Valentina Ideh, an Ophthalmologist has raised the alarm that about 40 million Nigerians are at risk of contracting river blindness (Onchocerca volvulus) in the country. Dr Ideh, who lectures at the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, stated this in Benin during the 20th Faculty Lecture with the theme: Vision 2020 in Nigeria: Myth or Reality.

“Onchocerciasis is perhaps, the most researched filarial infection in Nigeria. The provisional estimates had suggested that 7-10 million Nigerians are infected with Onchocerca volvulus, approximately 40 million are at risk of the disease”, she said.

Dr Ideh said according to the Global Burden of Disease Study estimate in 2017, there were 20.9 million prevalent Onchocerciasis volvulus infections worldwide, adding that 14.6 million of the infected people had skin disease while 1.15 million had vision loss.

She explained that the disease is a severe public health problem responsible for blindness and visual impairment, debilitating skin disease and relentless itching in millions of people.

She identified Glaucoma and cataract as other leading causes of blindness in the world, calling for adequate funding of the health sector.

However, she called on the federal government to upgrade its ophthalmology department in all Teaching Hospitals and integrate the Primary Eye Care (PEC) into Primary Health Care (PHC) initiative across the 36 states of the federation.

In another but similar news the Nigerian Health Blog published some weeks back that over 30,000 children between the age of 0-14 years in primary and junior secondary schools ‎are suffering from various eye diseases in Jigawa state.

An Ophthalmologist and head of eye clinic at Rasheed Shekoni Specialist hospital in Dutse, Dr Abdullahi Idris disclosed this during a round table meeting between the Ministry of Health official, media and the team from the Health and Development Support Programme said out of the over six million people in Jigawa state about 2.4 million are children and estimated that about 30,000 children or has one eye disease or another.

Health / Covip-plus: Unijos Produces First World Anti-snake Venom Vaccine by udomoh(m): 8:17am On Jul 20, 2019
First plant derived anti-snake venom vaccine produced in University of Jos, Nigeria
Name of vaccine is COVIP-plus
Vaccine has passed clinical trial
The anti-snake venom vaccine took 24 years of perseverance to produce.
Awaiting NAFDAC approval for commercialisation

The African Centre of Excellence in Phytomedicine Research and Development, University of Jos, in collaboration with the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion, (NOTAP) has produced the world first anti—snake venom vaccine called COVIP-plus.

The new vaccine was unveiled at a national forum on promotion of Anti-Snake Venom (COVIP-Plus) for commercialisation organised by NOTAP and ACEPRD, yesterday in Abuja.

Speaking at the forum, the chief inventor and the leader of the Centre, Prof. John Aguiyi, said the concept of the invention was borne out of the desire to provide affordable and available anti-snake vaccine for Nigerians, especially farmers.

According to him, the innovation is aimed at bringing down the cost of treatment of snake bite. “We have seen the prices, one vive for N32,000 for the monovalent, the polyvalent goes for N52,000.

In a very serious situation, you need from five to 10 vials. It becomes imperative that we develop something for our own use from local source and that is what we have done,” he explained.

He further informed that the product was ready and awaiting NAFDAC’s approval for clinical trial, which is the only certificate it needs before it can be commercialsed and be made available.

‘‘I am happy to say that what we have today proven not to have any of such adverse effect at least in the animals for now. By the time we carry out the clinical trials, we should be able to establish whether such adverse effects are found in humans or not.

“It is the first in the world because going through the literatures, you will not find a plant derived anti-snake vaccine. That is what made it to be unique. It was not a day’s journey, it took almost 24 years with potency and endurance”, Aguiyi explained.

He therefore called on government, private sector, pharmaceutical companies and NAFDAC to partner with ACEPRD and NOTAP in the effort to commercialise the product.

Meanwhile, the statistics of snake bites obtained from some medical centres across the country indeed show a steady rise, with the Kaltungo General Hospital, Gombe, for instance recording an average of 16 to 20 cases everyday.

Records from the hospital showed that between 2005 and 2010, a total of 12,398 snake bites were reported, with 55 deaths recorded. Many of the victims were from Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba and Adamawa States.

This breakthrough is long awaited and it is a welcome development.

Health / 15 Things You Don’t Know About The Hippocratic Oath by udomoh(m): 8:50am On Jul 19, 2019
The Hippocratic Oath is one of the most respected documents of history. It is a powerful rite of passage that connects generations of medical professionals around the world.

Laid out in the oath are principles, guidelines, rules, and regulations that provide the framework for modern medical ethics.

Below are 15 things you don’t know about the Hippocratic Oath
1. The Hippocratic Oath was composed over 2,000 years ago around the years 3-5 BC. The original text was written in Ionic Greek by Hippocrates, who is considered to be the father of modern medicine in most western cultures.

2. There are many versions of the Oath. We here present two versions. First, the “classic” version (or more precisely, one translation of the original oath). And then, following it, is presented one of the fine “modern” versions of the Hippocratic Oath.

3. The classical version of the Hippocratic Oath is from the translation from the Greek by Ludwig Edelstein. From The Hippocratic Oath: Text, Translation, and Interpretation, by Ludwig Edelstein. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins Press, 1943.

4. The modern version of the Hippocratic Oath was written in 1964 by Louis Lasagna, Dean of the School of Medicine at Tufts University.

5. In its original form, it requires a new physician to swear, by a number of healing gods, to uphold specific ethical standards. But this has been modified.

6. The Oath is still held sacred by physicians: to treat the ill to the best of one’s ability, to preserve a patient’s privacy, to teach the secrets of medicine to the next generation and so on.

7. The oldest extant version dates to roughly the 10th-11th century, held in the Vatican Library.

8.The content of the traditional Oath can be divided into 12 items: Covenant with the Greek god Apollo, Covenant with teachers, Commitment to students, Covenant with patients, Appropriate means & ends (the good of the patient not the physician), Limits on means & ends, Justice, Chastity, Confidentiality, and Accountability.

9. In Germany during the Third Reich, medical students did not take the Hippocratic Oath, although they knew the ethic of “nil nocere” — do no harm.

10. Most medical schools today have their students swear upon modernised version of the translation of the original Greek text, rather than the traditional version.
11. Even in this modern times and despite the modifications, the watchword of the Hippocratic oath still remains: Primum non nocere which means “First Do No Harm”

12. Many modern institutions have modified the content of the Hippocratic Oath to be more applicable to the time period. The most common changes to the modernized Oath include removing the prescription of sexual contact with patients, the ban against using abortive agents, the ban against euthanasia, the agreement to be accountable for keeping the Oath and the swearing to gods or God.

13. With so much modifications to meet modern needs, it is now a more secular document with no deference to any god or deity.

14. The Hippocratic Oath prohibits doctors from going on strike but this part has been expunged by many countries including Nigeria.

15. Breaking the Hippocratic Oath is not considered quackery but medical malpractice which can make a medical doctor or dentist lose his or her license or even go to jail. Quackery is when an individual not certified by a medical board like the medical and dental council of Nigeria (MDCN) carry out medical procedures.

New Special Assistant to Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila on Special Needs /Equal Opportunities – Abdulsalam Idowu Kamaldeen

Abdulsalam Idowu kamaldeen, 49, became physically challenged at the age of three (3) due to polio infection.

He lost his mother a year after he lost his legs to polio.

Abdulsalam started primary education at age of 8 in 1978 at Erin-Ile, kwara state. He started street begging same year due to financial constraint.

Thereafter he finished his primary school in 1993 and came to Lagos, where he found himself on the street begging for alms and sleeping under the Dosunmu bridge at Idumota.

After his secondary school education, he then started evening classes.

He gained admission to study political science in UNILAG in 2006 and graduated in 2010.

In his determination to become a lawyer he sat for JAMB exams and gained admission to study law at the University of Lagos in 2010, (same year he graduated in political science). He finished in 2015.

Abdulsalam proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, passed all his papers at first sitting and was called to bar in 2016.
Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila in his formal capacity as the then House Majority Leader discovered Abdulsalam Kamaldeen and invited him to the floor of the House in 2017 for Special Recognition by the House.
Kamaldeen, a practicing lawyer, hails from Kwara State.

I dub him the Franklin D. Roosevelt of Nigeria.

Franklin D. Roosevelt was the 32nd President of the United States. Not only did he serve an unprecedented four terms in office, but he was also the first president with a significant physical disability.

FDR was diagnosed with infantile paralysis, better known as polio, in 1921, at the age of 39.

Although dealing with this crippling disease was difficult, many believe that his personal struggles helped shape FDR, both as a man and as a president.

Health / Snake Bites Man In Indian, Man Bites It Back, Both Die. by udomoh(m): 11:37am On Jul 17, 2019
A 60-year-old man known as Parvat Gala Baria, died from a snake bite in Gujarat’s Mahisagar district but not before he bit back and killed the reptile too, a village official said Monday.

The incident happened on Saturday afternoon in Ajanwa village in Santrampur tehsil, said the head of the village, over 120 kilometres from Gujarat’s Vadodara.

“Parvat Gala Baria was standing near a spot where maize was being loaded from a field onto a truck. A snake slithered out and while others there ran away, he continued to stand claiming he had caught snakes earlier,” the village head said.
“He grabbed the snake which retaliated by biting him on the hands and face. However, Parvat bit back and killed the snake too,” he said.

He was rushed to a hospital in Lunawada town and then shifted to a bigger medical facility in Godhra but died later in the day from the venom injected into him by the snake, sarpanch Baria said.

Ajanwa police has registered a case, an official said.

Gujarat is a state in India and is home to several architectural marvels and is famous for its vibrant culture and rich heritage, apart from the scenic landscapes and mouth-watering cuisine. Offering a broad range of the most spectacular attractions, Gujarat, also known as ‘The Land of Legends’, presents a perfect blend of art, history, music and culture.

Health / Patient Slits Own Throat In UBTH, Dies Immediately by udomoh(m): 8:55pm On Jul 16, 2019
UBTH patient commits suicide

A male patient reportedly committed suicide at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, the hospital spokesman, Mr. Joshua Uwaila, has said.

The incident occurred at the Male Medical ward of the hospital popularly known as popularly known as Ward A1 on Saturday night.

It was alleged that the victim took his own life while waiting for a doctor.

The victim (name withheld) allegedly stabbed himself with a broken window glass in the throat and severed his jugular leading to his death in male medical ward.

The wife of the patient was away to buy an item at a nearby shop within the hospital premises when the tragedy occurred, eyewitnesses said.

The development triggered a spontaneous protest by some patients at the ward.

A witness, who did not want his name mentioned, and who was also admitted in the ward on Saturday night, disclosed that the deceased came to the hospital with his wife.

“The man suddenly became wild and broke a glass by his bed window and stabbed himself to death,” he said.

“His wife was not around. She went out to buy something outside. There was blood everywhere. We were lucky not to have been injured,” the eyewitness said.

The body of the deceased was later taken to the hospital morgue.

Confirming the incident to journalists in Benin on Tuesday, the spokesman of the university hospital, described the incident as unfortunate.

“A young man, who was a patient at the male medical ward of our hospital, whose diagnosis cannot be disclosed for confidentiality reason, suddenly broke a louvre blade and stabbed himself,” he said.

“Uwaila said efforts to resuscitate the man proved abortive, as he was certified dead at 11p.m.”he said

At the time of filling this report, an inquest into the cause of death of the patient is still being awaited.
