Health / New NHIS Boss To Staff: Key Into My Programmes Or Get Sacked! by udomoh(m): 6:45am On Jul 16, 2019
New NHIS boss to run the helms of affairs of the scheme for 5years
Unveils his plans, policies and programmes for the NHIS
Prof. Muhammed Sambo is the first NHIS boss to have a file number
Warns that workers who cannot key in to his unveiled 3-point agenda will be sacked.
Promise to implement the 10-point recommendations of the Federal Government

Prof. Mohammed Sambo, the new executive secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has unveiled his administration’s plans and polices on how to make the scheme more effective and result-oriented.
The scheme, which has been enmeshed in corruption and leadership crisis in the last four years, has been without a substantive Executive Secretary, following the suspension of the last Chief Executive, Prof. Yusuf Usman.

Sambo, who was among the pioneer workers of the scheme, voluntarily transferred his service to the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, some 15 years ago.

He was appointed about two weeks ago for a five-year renewable term by President Muhammadu Buhari following recommendations for the sack of the former executive boss, Prof. Yusuf Usman by a presidential panel.

The new NHIS boss was introduced to the management and other workers at the Abuja headquarters by the overseeing Director, Mr. Ben Umogo, from the Office of Head of Service of the Federation (OHOSF).

Speaking after the handover ceremony, Sambo said he had packaged a Three-Points Agenda that he would soon unveil to the workers.

The new NHIS chief said result-oriented workers were welcome on board while those without ambitio and poor attitude to work will be sacked.
He promised to ensure that the scheme under his leadership implements the 10-Point recommendations of the Federal Government panel that probed alleged infraction against the immediate past Executive Secretary of the scheme.

Sambo assured the workers that he would operate with an open mind and with a listening ear.

Displaying his knowledge of happenings within the scheme, the NHIS executive secretary pledged to tackle the challenges from the root with the support of the workers.

He said: “I am highly delighted to be the first Executive Secretary that possess NHIS staff file number. (This drew a large cheers and clapping from the workers). I, therefore, regard this appointment as not only home-coming but a very critical stage in the evolution of the NHIS.”

“Within the last few decades, a lot of water has passed under the bridge with the passage of developing of this very important heritage, which has tremendous capacity to change the landscape of the health system in Nigeria.”

“However, this dream has been hampered by numerous unresolved problems and challenges, hence making the attainment of scheme a mirage.”

Crime / Full Details On The Uniben Student That Committed Suicide Emerges by udomoh(m): 11:01am On Jul 15, 2019
More details emerge on the Uniben student that committed suicide yesterday on campus.

A male student whose name is simply known as Ephraim and full identify are still largely unknown committed suicide yesterday in the University campus.

This is the third suicide in a month.

He was said to have jumped from the last floor of Faculty of Arts and died instantly.

Ephraim, according to some of the reliable sources I interviewed stays in Ekosodin (a community off-campus) and was in the Department of Actuarial Science, Faculty of Management Sciences.

He has failed to graduate from his department for the second year running now and according to his roommate who craved anonymity, he(Ephraim) said “he would end it all earlier in the day yesterday.”

The Nigerian Health Blog reliable sources said emergency response was slow and it took the Uniben emergency services 2 hours to respond to distress calls after the victim jumped.

Ephraim lay on the hard floor for more than 2 hours before the school emergency services came.

Some angry students believe he might had survived if they have arrived the scene of the suicide earlier.

They blamed Uniben authorities for their negligence and payment of lip service to students welfare citing other instances .

It’s like students are killing themselves every week now. It is scary.

I understand there has been 4 attempts in the last few months and 3 successful suicide deaths.

The school authority should investigate the causes of suicides among it students. It is getting too much and out of hand.
At report time, efforts to reach the public relations officer (PRO) of the University of Benin, Mr. Micheal Osasuyi proved abortive as he was not picking his calls and has not responded to a text message sent to his phone.

Three weeks ago, a 300 level Medical Laboratory Science student in the Faculty of Basic Medical Science (BMS) of the same University, Miss Christabel Ebuoro committed suicide by drinking sniper (DDVP) over an alleged rape (according to the Nigerian Police) and no arrest has been made up till the time the Nigerian Health Blog is filling this report.

It is now well documented that most victims of suicides in the 6 months are students of tertiary institutions across the federation but Uniben has recorded the highest number in a single month.

Still in the field. I will feed us updates as more details emerge.

Health / *busola Vs Fatoyinbo* NONE Of This Means Sexual Consent-dr Olufunmilayo by udomoh(m): 5:02pm On Jul 14, 2019
Social media influencer and UK based Medical doctor, Dr. Olufunmilayo has lent his voice to the ongoing controversy about the true meaning of sexual consent.

This new controversy is following the unending Busola VS Pastor Fatoyinbo rape saga.

Dr. Olufunmilayo shares his opinion on his Twitter handle......read

Sexual Consent is simple.

If it’s not yes,

Then it is no.

There are no maybes.

“But she wore a miniskirt”

“I wanted you to push harder”

“But he was winking at me”

“But she was grinding me at the club”

“Why will he ask my number if not sex?”

“So why get drunk then if not for sex?”

“But she didn’t scream ”

“we are in a relationship”
“But she came to my house”

“She wanted to sleep over”

“silence is not consent”

“flirting is not consent”

“underage is not consent”

NONE of this is consent.

Consent is clear.

If it is not yes, then it is no.

Case closed.

Health / See The Amount Of Worms Removed From A Patient’s Intestine (video) by udomoh(m): 10:15pm On Jul 13, 2019
It is not a plate of spaghetti or noodles. It is worms!

This amount of worms that was found in a person’s intestines.

Even the doctors were shocked!

When was the last time you dewormed yourself or your child?

According to WHO, you should deworm at least once a year or every 6 months. Better taken with fatty foods.

Remember to always wash your hands.

Make sure your fingernails are short and always clean STOP BITING YOUR NAILS! you’re an adult!

Wash your hands before preparing food.

How do we deworm? Any suggestions? Drug?

WHO recommends Albendazole 400mg taken once every 6months-1year. Better taken with fatty food.

Also Zentel, Combatrin are effective.

Worms are not only found in the intestines.

They can also be found in the brain, lungs, eyes, muscles, and liver.

The common complications of worms are intestinal obstruction, abdominal pains, diarrhea , bloody stools, weight loss, seizures, coughing of blood (lung worm), muscle pains, blindness, anal itching , anemia, malabsorption and so on.

Health / Meningitis Is NOT Caused By Heat - Dr Olufunmilayo by udomoh(m): 9:41am On Jul 13, 2019
A social media influencer and UK based medical doctor explains why meningitis is NOT caused by heat contrary to popular beliefs and reasons it is common in Northern Nigeria.

She also proffer solutions to the meningitis problem in Northern Nigeria and Nigeria in general.

Meningitis is not caused by heat

Meningitis is not caused by heat

Meningitis is not caused by heat

Meningitis is not caused by heat

Meningitis is not caused by heat

Meningitis is not caused by heat

It is caused by bacteria/viruses.

Thank you.

This is a simple short story written to help you understand everything about meningitis (called koli/yirunyirun in yorubaland).

What to do

What it is

How to prevent it

Why it happens

How it looks like

And everything else, read here.

So why is it common in Northern Nigeria?

It is a combination of many factors which increase the risk for northerners- but being a “hot” region is not a cause for meningitis at all.

A lot of hot places in the world like Dubai, Iran, Qatar, and many places in the Middle East don’t have as much cases of meningitis as much as we do- if they have any at all.

Infact according to the WHO, the highest burden of the disease is in a curious zone called “the meningitis belt” of sub-Saharan Africa, stretching from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east.

This definitely includes Nigeria- particularly Northern Nigeria. This meningitis belt still reports around 30 000 cases each year.

In major epidemics, the attack rate range is 100-800 people per 100,000.

But some communities can have attack rates as high as 1000 per 100,000.

So why is Meningitis quite common in the North of Nigeria?

First reason is Immunization.

There’s massive ignorance and confusion surrounding immunization.

A lot of people are not aware about immunization and so never get their children immunised against meningitis.

Some who are aware are terribly misinformed. They see immunization as a low-key American way of sterilising their children/women.

So they turn down opportunities for immunising themselves and kids- and when the meningitis bacteria/virus comes calling- they will pick up the call.

Sadly effective disease control can only be achieved with massive vaccination as the initial step.

Unfortunately, the effectiveness of the vaccine itself also depend on the coverage.

So while there are vaccines, many northerners are either unaware, uninformed or uninterested.

Overcrowding- which makes disease spread easily.

Widespread poverty- making them not healthy on the average with weak immune system.

Stark illiteracy- no education.

Excessive ignorance- on immunization.

Cold nights- promoting chest infections and colds.

These are the issues.

There’s also superstition.
Back in 2017, a sitting governor in Zamfara labelled meningitis as a “punishment from God” for fornication.

If a governor is that illiterate, what do you think would be the intellectual situation of the average person in that state/region?

So finally, the answer is simple:

Fight ignorance and illiteracy.

Tackle poverty.

Make vaccinations free and mandatory.

Provide health education.

Address homelessness and overcrowding.

These are the simple things we can do to effectively address meningitis as a country.

Thanks.

Health / Lagos Seals Illegal Traditional Medicine Facilities (Photos) by udomoh(m): 4:28pm On Jul 12, 2019
Lagos seals illegal traditional medicine facilities

The Lagos State Traditional Medicine Board has sealed the facilities of illegal tradomedical practitioners in Ikorodu area of the State in its quest to rid Lagos of unwholesome practices.
Speaking on the exercise, Mr. Kemi Kadiku, Director of LSTMB, stated that members of its Task Force acted on the information received from representatives in Ikorodu Local Government Area where the team discovered many fake and unregistered facilities.
According to him, “Our Task Force gang got reliable information from our men on ground at Ikorodu that many Traditional Medicine practitioners are operating illegally and unhindered in the community. When our team later went for inspection, we uncovered lots of noticeable infractions which led to the sealing of six facilities and their owners asked to report at the Board for regularisation”.

Kadiku also commended Prince Olusesi Mare, the supervisor of Ikorodu Task Force gang for doing a great surveillance job ahead of LSTMB’s visit which made the monitoring exercise easier.

He reiterated the determination of the Board to reposition traditional medicine practice in the State, advising all traditional healers to liaise with the Board in registering and regularising their practices according to laid down rules and regulation in the State.

A resident in the area who pleaded anonymity said it was a welcome development as most of the traditional medicine practitioners are very dirty and unhygienic.

“I commend you for this but to me this is just tip of the iceberg. The ones you need to seal also are the roadsides and community lane local gin sellers better known as paraga joint. These people are doing more harm to consumers. Countless people have lost their lives to them since it is now a trade everyone can engage without having herbal knowledge. During the military era, one dare not open such nonentity and nuisance business without been get punished for it. Clamp these paraga joint down before it turns everyone to drunkard.” He said.

Health / R & B Star, R. Kelly Arrested For Sex Trafficking And Child Pornography by udomoh(m): 7:26am On Jul 12, 2019
R and B superstar and multiple award winning musician, R.Kelly has been indicted and arrested on charges of sex trafficking, child pornography and obstruction of justice, once again putting him at the center of a legal tussle.
Kelly was arrested on Thursday in Chicago.

The arrest is part of a 13-count sex-crime indictment, which U.S. attorney spokesman Joseph Fitzpatrick told the Chicago Sun-Times involves charges of child pornography and obstruction of justice. Kelly’s publicist confirmed the sex trafficking charges to WBBM-TV.

It is not clear what other additional charges Kelly could be facing, but Thursday’s indictment is separate from those filed by Cook County prosecutors in May 2019. Those charges relate to cases involving four women that accuse Kelly of rape and sexual molestation. Three of them were minors at the time the alleged assaults took place, with the acts reportedly taking place between 1998 and 2010.

One of the alleged victims, identified in court documents as JP, said the assault took place in 2010 where Kelly “by the use of force or threat of force and … acted in such a manner as to threaten or endanger the life of JP.”

During a June court appearance, Kelly pleaded not guilty to the 11 counts of sexual assault. Those charges are in addition to 10 charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse levied against him in February. Of those allegations, nine listed the victims as between the ages of 13 and 16 at the time of the alleged assaults.

Additional information involving the charges from the latest indictment is also expected on Friday.

According to WNBC-TV, who first reported the story, Kelly’s arrest was conducted by agents from the Department of Homeland Security and the New York Police Department. Both the U.S. Attorney for Northern District of Illinois and the Southern District of New York are reportedly involved in the case.

Health / Sanwo-olu Visits Ijegun Fire Survivors In Hospital, Warns Pipeline Vandals by udomoh(m): 8:22am On Jul 11, 2019
Sanwo-Olu visits Ijegun fire survivors in hospital, warns pipeline vandals
…Says Government Will Foot The Medical Bill Of Survivors
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday visited victims of the recent Ijegun pipeline fire incident who are receiving treatment at the Trauma and Burns Unit of the Gbagada General Hospital.

The Governor, in company of his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, sympathised with families of the victims and also appraised recuperation of the survivors. He took time to go round the three wards where some of the victims were receiving treatment for various degrees of injuries.

Among the survivors are three children and four adults.
While describing the incident as unfortunate, Governor Sanwo-Olu bemoaned criminal activities around oil pipeline right of ways in the state, stressing that the State Government would cooperate with the Federal Government to strengthen security patrol of the vulnerable areas to protect the lives of residents.
He said: “We are here to check on the survivors, who are receiving treatment and assess their healing process.

Although, we had a few fatalities, there are many survivors with different degrees of burn. They are responding well to treatment. I spoke with them and assured that government will do everything to ensure they get well.
“This kind of unfortunate incident must be a lesson for all of us. We cannot continue to witness loss of lives to this kind of preventable crimes. Those who are bent on making illegal wealth at the expense of other people’s lives should have a rethink.”
Sanwo-Olu warned those engaging in pipeline vandalism to desist, saying full wrath of the law would be brought against economic saboteurs.
The Governor cleared the air on why he did not visit the scene of the fire incident.

He said: The issue of pipeline vandalism is a criminal issue being dealt with by the Federal Government. For us in the state, my deputy and I did not visit the site of the incident, because we didn’t want to make a camera show at the scene. This is not because we don’t have empathy or we are not doing what is required of us; it is a crime scene and security operatives are at the site for investigation. We don’t want to disrupt that process.”
Sanwo-Olu said the government had resolved to foot the bills of the survivors who are receiving treatment at the state’s medical facilities in Ikeja and Gbagada.

The Governor also used the opportunity to inspect the abandoned cardiac and renal Centre located inside the Gbagada General Hospital to inspect the state of the health facility.

Health / NAFDAC Shuts Down 3 PONMO Factories For Using Mortuary Chemicals As Preservative by udomoh(m): 3:52am On Jul 11, 2019
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has closed down three factories that specialise in importing hides following allegations and alarm raised by residents that these factories preserve their ponmo with formalin- a chemical used in embalming the dead in the mortuary.

The three factories are located on Unity Avenue, Ijagemo; Sosanya Street, Ijegun; and Adedayo Ayodeji Street, WAZOBIA Bus Stop, Abaranje, all in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.

It was learnt that residents of Adedayo Ayodeji Street had protested the continued activities of one of the factories in their area, saying the stench from the hide processing was unbearable.

The Deputy Director, Intelligence Unit, NAFDAC, Mr Francis Ononiwu, on Tuesday said one Isaac Nwaebo was arrested because he tampered with the agency’s seal on his premises

He added that when the NAFDAC officials visited Nwaebo’s business premises the previous week, they discovered large quantity of hide, but only saw a handful of the item during Tuesday’s inspection of the facility.

Ononiwu stated that the agency would do everything within its power to ensure that such activities were nipped in the bud and poisonous hides are removed from the state.

“There are so many imported hide factories in Lagos. The hides are preserved with the same chemical used for embalming corpses. They are not safe for human consumption. We have been fighting them and we will get to them anywhere they are.”

Some residents of Unity Avenue, Ijagemo, alleged that water from their boreholes was no longer safe for drinking due to the underground pollution as a result of the activities the factory.

According to them, they are living in fear of an imminent outbreak of disease, noting that whenever the factory was discharging the imported hides from trucks, the entire community would be enveloped by an offensive odour as if from a morgue.

The residents, who pleaded not to be named, told our correspondent that the factory usually burns and washes the hides in the open environment, adding that they had now resorted to drinking sachet water and fetching water from other communities for other domestic uses.

A Proprietress who runs a private school in the area lamented that parents have withdrawn their children from the school citing fears of food or water poisoning as a result of pollution from this factories.

Health / History Made As Woman Who Had A Uterus Transplant From A Dead Donor Gives Birth by udomoh(m): 10:56am On Jul 10, 2019
History made: For the First Time in North America, a Woman Gives Birth After Uterus Transplant From a Deceased Donor

A baby girl born last month at Cleveland Clinic has made history. She was the first baby in North America delivered by a mother who received a uterus transplant from a deceased donor.

You’re probably familiar with the idea of a kidney, liver or heart transplant, but uterine transplant is a rapidly evolving field, says maternal-fetal medicine specialist Uma Perni, MD, who was part of the mother’s care team.

“It’s important to remember that this is still research, but it’s exciting to see what the options may be for women in the future,” she says.

The mother, who is in her mid-30s, is part of a groundbreaking research trial involving 10 women with uterine factor infertility. Women who have UFI don’t have a uterus, or had their uterus removed, so they aren’t able to get pregnant. The study is testing whether receiving a uterus transplant from a deceased donor could allow these women to become pregnant (via in-vitro fertilization) and carry and deliver a baby.

This clinical trial reflects the Cleveland Clinic tradition of innovation in clinical medicine. Unlike some other uterus transplant programs, Cleveland Clinic’s trial uses only wombs from donors who have recently died. This eliminates the risk of potentially harming a living donor, who would need to have major abdominal surgery to have her uterus removed.

“The transplantation of a uterus into a woman is a complex procedure that requires suppression of her immune system response,” says transplant surgeon Andreas Tzakis, MD. “Through this research, we aim to make these extraordinary events ordinary for the women who choose this option. We are grateful to the donor. Their generosity allowed our patient’s dream to come true and a new baby to be born.”

Since the trial began, the team has completed five uterus transplants, three of which were successful (including this one, which resulted in a live birth). Currently, two women are waiting to have embryo transfers, and several more candidates are waiting for a transplant.

Is uterus transplant now the new solution to infertility? Time will tell.

Health / 5 Foods We Were Once Told Was Bad……… But Are Now Good by udomoh(m): 7:56am On Jul 10, 2019
An article on foods once said to be unhealthy but now certified healthy or foods once said to bad for you. …………but are now good.

1. EGGS

EGGS are incredible! Consuming an egg a day by healthy individuals does not increase any risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, studies have shown that people with diabetes as well as patients with existing hypercholesterolemia should limit their intake of whole eggs to just 2 per week. Whole eggs are very rich in nutrients, including choline, which decreases the risk for the development of cardiovascular disease. Adequate intake of choline can help in decreasing the level of blood homocysteine. It is worth mentioning that hyperhomocysteinemia is an independent risk factor for the development of CVD. Furthermore, high level of homocysteine has been linked to the increased risk of depression, dementia and other neurological disorders. Do you know that starting your day with an egg-containing breakfast can help in the prevention and management of obesity? This is because eggs have a high satiety index, which causes a delay in the consumption of the subsequent meal.

2. BUTTER

BUTTER is natural! There is no doubt that butter is healthier than margarines that contain high levels of trans fatty acids. Do you know that trans fatty acids are worse than saturated fatty acids in terms of increasing the risk of chronic diseases? Trans fatty acids increase the level of all bad lipid in our body, including bad cholesterol (LDL-cholesterol), lipoprotein A (Lpa), which behaves just like LDL-cholesterol as well as triglycerides. Unfortunately, trans fatty acids decrease the concentration of the good cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol in our body). Trans fatty acids can even worsen the signs and symptoms of autism and ADHD, because they interfere with the production of EPA and DHA, which are needed for normal brain functioning.

3. POTATOES

POOR potatoes! People think that eating potatoes can make you obese. That’s not true. Potatoes (NOT chips or French fries) have a very high satiety index. Do you know that potato salad has twice less calories than the consumption of only potatoes? Well, usually we consume our potatoes when they are hot. In that state, the whole energy from the potato salad is available for use. However, when you cook and cool your potatoes and later make salad out of them, the energy availability becomes less. This is because cooling the potatoes makes the starch difficult for enzymes to digest. 1 g of hot potatoes will give 4 kcal, but 1 g of cooled potatoes will provide you with only 1.5 kcal. Isn’t that amazing?

4. DAIRY PRODUCTS

DAIRY products! The incorporation of low-fat dairy products into our diet will help in the prevention chronic diseases, including obesity, hypertension, stroke, type 2 diabetes mellitus and cancer. This is because dairy products are very rich in animal bioactive substances that prevent chronic diseases.

5. NUTS

Daily consumption of NUTS is important in decreasing the risk of chronic diseases, because they are high in dietary fibre, saturated fatty acids and have a high satiety index.

Health / Re: A Pharmacist Links Painkillers & Self Medication As Causes Of Kidney Failure by udomoh(m): 6:41pm On Jul 09, 2019
But what she said is true. Painkillers abuse especially NSAIDs causes kidney damage
Health / A Pharmacist Links Painkillers & Self Medication As Causes Of Kidney Failure by udomoh(m): 6:30pm On Jul 09, 2019
Pharmacist explains causes of kidney failure

Rotkang Okunola, a pharmacist at the University of Jos has identified self-medication, abuse of painkillers and antibiotics as some of the leading causes of kidney damage. Okunola, who is a lecturer with the University of Jos, disclosed this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos.

She said indiscriminate intake of drugs such as painkillers and strong antibiotics could damage the kidney and eventually lead to kidney failure.

She also said that self-prescription was responsible for the cases of drug resistance in the society, adding that most people who indulged in the practice either failed to adhere to the number of days to take the drugs or failed to take them as and when due.

The pharmacist cautioned people who indulged in self-medication to desist from it, saying the act was highly inimical to their health. She also said that diseases such as hypertension and diabete mellitus if not managed or poorly managed could also lead to damage of the kidney. She advised individuals with family history of kidney diseases to ensure that they went for regular kidney function tests ( blood tests and ultrasound scan) as kidney diseases could also be hereditary.

She advised that people should learn the habit of checking their blood sugar level and their blood pressure, cultivate healthy eating habit and take only prescribed drugs as directed. A correspondent of NAN spoke with some residents of Jos who indulged in self-medication, including Miss Simi Chollom, a student of the Plateau State Polytechnic.

Chollom said whenever she had fever, she just takes anti-malarial drug instead of going to the hospital to ascertain the actual cause of the fever. On her part, Mrs Mary Bitrus said she stopped self-medicating after she almost lost her life.

Bitrus said she was treating malaria which wasn’t abating, without knowing that she had hepatitis B, until she went to the hospital for proper checks and the actual cause of her ailment was diagnosed. She vowed never to indulge in the act again.

Other causes of kidney failure are smoking, alcohol, excessive bleeding, urinary tract infections, severe diarrhoea, kidney stones, obesity, systemic lupus erythromatosis, dehydration and the commonest cause of kidney damage among Nigerians which is skin bleaching.

Health / Failure To Find A Sexual Partner Now A Disability- WHO by udomoh(m): 4:57am On Jul 05, 2019
Have you read about the new WHO sexual disability guidelines?

It says: “It is either you have sex or you are considered disabled”

People who do not have sex or struggle to find a sexual partner to have children, will now be considered disabled.

According to the shocking reports, in the new guidelines the World Health Organization( WHO) is set to classify a person, who is unable to find a suitable sexual partner or achieve pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sex, as disabled.

WHO (World Health Organization) is the directing and coordinating authority for health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, articulating evidenced-based policy options, providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends.

This shocking new development comes after new guidelines by the World Health Organization, which is set to be announced soon. Until now, not having an active sexual life or infertility was never considered a disability, but with this new move, all this is set to be changed.

The Lesbian Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community is not left out of the study, as the new rule will cover heterosexual and gay couples, who will be given the same priority like couple seeking invitro-fertilization (IVF) because of fertility problems, the report said.

Many have called the new WHO guidelines absurd, nonsense and controversial even for putting infertility and IVF among the group.

More of this study will be revealed as events unfold.

What is your take on the new WHO sexual disability guidelines?

Health / ‘They Were Eating Me Alive’ Mechanic Loses Arm To 2 Pig-hunting Dogs by udomoh(m): 12:46pm On Jul 04, 2019
I could hear the meat being ripped off, ‘they were eating me alive’- says mechanic who survived dogs attack

A mechanic has lost an arm and suffered severe cuts to his other arm, cheeks and neck after being mauled by a customer’s two 50kg hunting dogs.
Brendan ‘Bear’ Clark, 43, was working on a customer’s car in the front yard of a property in Coonamble, central western NSW, about two weeks ago when he went to get something from a shed and saw two pig-hunting dogs staring him down.
Moments later, one had latched onto his left arm and the other to his right, and Mr Clark was in the fight of his life.
He told the Newcastle Herald the dogs had him on the ground quickly, and he realised they were trying to kill him.
‘One went for the face – he was heading for the throat, but he got a good bite on the face,’ Mr Clark said.
‘I realised he was the main aggressor. I grabbed him by the collar and gripped my fingers in to keep him away. He started chewing on my arm, and I thought – “You can have my arm, but you’re not having my throat”.’
Mr Clark said at one point he had one hand in each dog’s collar.
While he was initially trying to choke them so they’d release his arms, they had soon injured him so badly all he could do was try to hold them off.

‘I could hear the bones breaking and the meat being ripped off,’ he said.
‘They were eating me alive.’
Mr Clark was fighting the dogs off for up to an hour-and-a-half before the owner of the property, who was working in an office inside the house located ‘a bit down the road’, came to help.

The dogs were put down straight away, but not before they had taken the mechanic’s right arm.
The horrifying ordeal has left Mr Clark suffering flashbacks that make him physically recoil, and an infection sustained during the battle means he is still fighting for his life.
His friend Jamie Everitt has launched a GoFundMe to help the mechanic with his medical bills, telling supporters Mr Clark was ‘always willing to help somebody and put himself last’.
‘A talented and skilled mechanic going about his work in a driveway of a customer, he was set upon by two very unwelcome dogs and as you can see he came off very second best,’ he wrote.
‘The fight he put up must of been horrendous to say the least.
‘Brendan we love you mate and we want to see you bounce back to happiness mate. The bills are going to be extreme, let alone doing everything left handed for a long time, so lets donate to a wonderful human being and top mate.’

Health / Social Media Is The Leading Cause Of Suicides In Youths- Psychiatrist by udomoh(m): 4:35am On Jul 04, 2019
Social media network like Facebook, Whatsapp, Instagram, Twitter, and IMO is the leading cause of suicides among young people according to Dr Olusola Oluwanuga, a Consultant Psychiatrist with the National Hospital Abuja.

Oluwanuga, who is also Head of Psychiatric Unit, stated this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.

She said the advent of social media had both good and bad impact on young people, noting that it had taken the place of family interaction, friendship, and communal living.

She said consistent use of the internet had caused isolation among individuals; and which has affected socialisation and interaction with those they should be communicating with, leading to depression and lack of resilience to handle stress.

“Today it is difficult to find families sitting, eating and watching movies together, rather parents and children are always on their phones with no opportunity to discuss burning issues.

“In offices workers are on the internet and social media interacting with people they sometimes do not see or know, joining invisible communities and various chat rooms on their phones.

“Such individuals are often exposed to right or wrong ideas likely to have negative impact on their mental health as a result of taking hard drugs.

This further alters their brain and ability to make right decisions resulting to depression and suicide.

“Due to lack of resilience to handle challenges, some young people also obtain different chemicals such as snipers, to end their lives,’’ she said.

Dr. Oluwanuga stressed that when young people were faced with challenges and stress, with no opportunity to speak to anyone, they might become frustrated, emotionally stressed and might consider suicide.
She also noted that the social media was making young people lose their confidence, self-esteem and identity.

“Social media has also had negative impact on some people where they put fake pictures, display fake riches, or show of wealth and well-being on Instagram and Facebook with fake identities and location.

” This fake actions sends wrong signals to indiscerning youths giving them a feeling of extreme sadness, hopelessness, helplessness, unworthiness, and depression that later culminates in suicides or suicidal thoughts.

She called on all stakeholders- government, religious leaders, traditional heads, medical experts and spirited individuals to all put hands on deck to curb the menace of suicides in our society.

Is the internet really a cause of suicides? Some persons believes the methods of taking ones own life (such as use of snipper) are learned from the internet.

Health / Eat As Many Eggs As Possible- Poultry Association Of Nigeria (PAN) by udomoh(m): 7:38pm On Jul 03, 2019
How many eggs per day?

The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) has advised Nigerians to eat as many eggs as possible irrespective of age and sex,  citing previous beliefs on egg consumption as erroneous and misleading. PAN described the egg as containing all the basic nutrients needed in the human body. Mr Ezekiel Ibrahim, the National President of the association gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.

Ibrahim, who frowned at the misconception about egg consumption from aged 50, described it as a complete meal.

He said that every human being needed egg from “cradle to grave’’ for healthy living.

According to him, egg is one of the products, which has 98 percent requirements of what people need and can’t get in any other product. “People are not aware that protein, energy, everything you require in your system, you can get it in egg. “We have a tradition before that if you are above 50, you do not need egg because it has cholesterol and that has been proven  otherwise by the recent scientific research. “All animals, including humans are from egg, so egg is a complete diet; you get all the basic nutrients from it. So why will you not eat an egg at a certain stage? “But as applicable to all things, you must not take it in excess or abuse it,” he advised.

According to the Harvard Institute, the advice about eating eggs has over the years, ranging from a limit of three to seven per week. Although eggs are high in cholesterol, dietary cholesterol does not affect blood cholesterol very much in most people. Saturated fat from meat and full-fat dairy products likely plays a bigger role. However, some people are more affected by dietary cholesterol than others. People with high blood cholesterol, diabetes, or heart disease should eat no more than two eggs a week. Focusing on overall diet quality, rather than one particular food, is also important.

Health / Woman Shares Harrowing Experience Of How Epidural Got Stuck In Her Back by udomoh(m): 4:36pm On Jul 02, 2019
A routine medical procedure gone horribly wrong as doctors could not remove stuck epidural catheter from an 18 year old woman primipara after delivery.

An 18-year old new mom, Selena Gray shares a horrifying story and said she suffered an “agonizing pain” following a costly labour room mishap which left her with an epidural stuck in her back for almost four days.

Selena Gray gave birth to a baby girl named Serenity on June 26 at Sacred Heart Hospital Pensacola, in Florida. The day before, when she went into labor, she received an epidural — a spinal anesthesia, administered through a catheter, sometimes used to relief labour pains during delivery and on request. But Gray says her procedure went awry, leaving the epidural’s plastic entry tube lodged in her back.

“Basically, my epidural looped itself into my spine,” Gray told Fox19. “It’s in a knot in my spine, and they’ve been trying to tug at it and tug at it. I haven’t been able to get up or move or do anything. I fear the worst case scenario which is paralysis”. She said.

From her Facebook post, she was transferred to Baptist Health care by Sacred Heart Hospital, also in Pensacola, two days later for expert care. But, according to her, the medical staff there, “refused to touch me.”

In a Facebook Live video posted to her profile, Gray said her doctor at Sacred Heart told her, “‘In all my years, I haven’t seen anything like this,’ so basically, they’re as shocked as I am.” She added that the doctors would “pull and pull at my spine,” and that her doctor went to get a neurologist to see what he could do. When he couldn’t get the epidural out either, she said, the doctor “cut it.”

“They used me as a practice tool(a lab rat),” she said in the video, adding that the doctor was “practicing.”

Baptist Health Care and Ascension (Sacred Heart Hospital) did not immediately respond to Yahoo Lifestyle’s requests for comment, but declined to comment for Fox 19.

Gray eventually took matters into her own hands and requested to be transferred to University of Florida Health Shands Hospital, about five hours away, in Gainesville, where doctors removed the epidural with an incision. In a Facebook post, she said that she was on the mend and suffered excruciating pain.

“I thank everyone for all their prayers and I [thank] God that Shands Hospital was able to remove the epidural out my back last night,” she wrote. “They had to make an incision leaving me with stitches but I’m on the road to recovery.”

But in a distressing setback just a day later, on June 30, Gray was in “agonizing pain,” according to her mother, Patricia Alvarado, who posted an update on Facebook. According to the post, the new mom has been unable to walk without support, and cannot stand up and hold her newborn baby at the same time-a possible complication of the stuck epidural.
Gray however said her only source of hope is her beautiful and big-eyed newborn baby which she described as “her bundle of joy”.

Gray, wrote her mother, is “not doing too well and she is very scared and distraught she can’t barely walk.”

Neither Gray nor her mother could be reached for comment by Yahoo Lifestyle. And a spokesperson for UF Health (Shands Hospital) declined to provide a statement, stating patient privacy laws and oath of confidentiality.
