Crime / Lagos To Tackle Crime With Forensic DNA Analysis – Solicitor General by udomoh(m): 7:29am On Aug 16, 2019
Lagos set to tackle crime with Forensic DNA Analysis

The Lagos State Government has disclosed that plans are ongoing to equip its Forensic Centre with Chemistry and Toxicology units to strengthen criminal investigations.

The Solicitor-General / Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Funlola Odunlami, who made the disclosure at the 4th Lagos Forensic Symposium at Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, opined that the unit would commence operations by 2020 to help the government uncover illegal use of controlled substances and drugs in the State.

“The inclusion of the forensic chemistry and toxicology checks will enhance criminal investigations in the State and also speed up the identification and conviction of perpetrators of cases related to intake of poisonous and harmful substances in the body”, Odulami said.

She added that the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre located at Odunlami area of Lagos Island has played a significant role in investigating over 100 cases of deaths, identification of exhumed human remains, rape and burglary since the commencement of operations in 2017.
The Lagos State Solicitor-General further noted that the forensic centre has also investigated about 300 cases of paternity and other heredity related issues, stressing that Nigeria has finally joined the international community’s efforts in applying scientific methods to prosecution, defence, law enforcement, criminal investigations, national security and disaster management.
Odunlami explained that the symposium was aimed at providing the public with information on the role of forensic science in criminal investigation and its importance to law enforcement agencies and the judiciary on mass fatalities, sexual assault, and other issues.

Also speaking at the event, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Muazu said the introduction of forensic science has helped in utilising Criminal Speciality Law in investigating criminal identities and exonerate the innocent persons.

Muazu, represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, CIID, Mrs. Yetunde Alonge, said investment in forensic investigation shows the visionary leadership of the Lagos State Government and urged the participants to tap into the wealth of knowledge of the professionals at the symposium.
In his remarks, the Director, Lagos State DNA & Forensic Centre, Dr. Richard Somiari, disclosed that Lagos State DNA and Forensic Laboratory is the only one accredited for Forensic DNA analysis in

Nigeria, adding that the database accelerates the process of identifying victims of crimes, linking crimes to one another and also identifying serial offenders.

While commending the Lagos Police Command for its collaborative efforts with the State Forensic Centre, Somiari said forensic services are also available to NGOs, law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and other members of the public.

Participants at the 4th Forensic Symposium included Judges, Magistrates, Lawyers, Legislators, Police, Immigration, Customs, Investigators, Forensic Pathologists/Scientists, Medical practitioners, Emergency Responders, Fire Brigade, Investigative Journalists, Students and the Press.
Recall that the Forensic Centre was established by the Lagos State government in 2017 to aid criminal investigation through DNA analysis.

Health / Why Are Prayers Only For “barren Women” But Not “impotent Men”? Dr Olufunmilayo by udomoh(m): 4:42pm On Aug 15, 2019
“Why does infertility in African culture stigmatize and blame women?” Why do churches offer special prayers for “barren women” but never “impotent men”? – Dr Olufunmilayo asks a rhetorical question.

Read below…..

Why is it that in churches, there are special prayers for “barren women”, but never “impotent men”?

Why do Pastors call people who are “seeking God for children” and only women come out, but never men?

Society and culture has made childlessness a woman’s problem. But it is not.

Why do you see a couple struggling to have children and you only wonder if the wife’s womb is intact, but not the man’s penis or testicles?

Why do our movies suggest a childless couple have the challenge because the woman had many abortions but not because the man had many STDs.

However you know what the facts of the matter is? Infertility is not a woman’s problem. It is a couple problem. In other words, the medical fact is infertility is never solely due to the woman, but can be due to problems from both the man and the woman. Many of you don’t know.

If as a man,

You take excessive alcohol,

You smoke cigarettes, shisha etc,

You wear very tight underwear,

You have repeated STDs untreated,

You have low sperm count,

You have problems with good erection,

ALL of these, can make you infertile, Or difficult to ever father a child.

If as a woman,

You have irregular periods,

You are overweight,

You smoke cigarettes, shisha etc,

You have repeated STDs untreated,

You produce milk when not pregnant,

You insert nonsense into your vagina to “tighten”, “flush” and “upgrade” it,

ALL these can make you infertile.

These are the things we should be educating one another about.

Not trying to pin all problems of infertility on women.

That’s counterproductive and unintelligent.

And that’s why when a couple goes to see a doctor, about infertility, the doctor will do tests for both of them.

This is why we must be different in our generation and not perpetuate the shameful stereotype that all infertility in marriages must surely be because of the woman.

Let me clarify, I’m not saying it can never be because if the woman.

I’m saying it can also be because of the man.

Of course one can reply and say: “But why do men get side chicks pregnant after their wives fail to give them children”?

So many reasons: Irregular sex, The wife not ovulating, The wife having problems, Or just sheer being unlucky.

Have you tried flipping the coin?

Let me help.

Think of this:

If a couple were having challenges having a child, do you know if the woman went out to have unprotected sex, like some men do, she can also get pregnant?
But this rarely happens. Because married women don’t.

That doesn’t mean those married women are infertile.
Anyway, if you are married or looking for children, Have unprotected sex 4 times a week.

Cut down alcohol- not more than one small glass a week.
Stop smoking completely- shisha, cigarettes etc Stay off contraceptives.

Don’t swallow semen- that’s not where it should go
If you are over 30 years, try those ideas for six months, If you are under 30, try it for one year, If after this duration, you still find difficulties getting pregnant, DO NOT WAIT any longer.
Go and see a doctor ASAP. So that if there is need for medical help, it can commence.

I hope this short post has educated you a little about infertility causes and what you can do, But beyond that, I hope this has opened your eyes to the unfortunate unfair stigmatisation of married women as being “barren”, when the fault may never be theirs.

In conclusion, the views of infertility in African culture is not fair to women and needs to been re-oriented.

Thanks for reading.

it’s because of all the times in the bible that couples dealt with childlessness the cure usually came from God opening the womb of the woman. Hannah, Sarah, Rebecca had husbands who had children from other women. I maybe wrong but things like this make it easy to

Believe the woman has a problem. Plus every time God was angry at a person he shuts the womb of the women and cattle nothing about the sperm e.g Abimelech.

7. In my opinion, lefties are still be marginalized in our societies. Most infrastructures, basic amenities, cars, public utilities and school desks are constructed with due considerations to left handers. In the words of John W. Santrock: “For centuries, left-handers have suffered unfair discrimination in a world designed for right-handers. For example,

Health / Biography Of Prof. Jean-jacques Muyembe-tamfum: The Pioneer Of Ebola Cure by udomoh(m): 7:49am On Aug 14, 2019
Prof. Jean-Jacques Muyembe-Tamfum, has achieved a feat of a lifetime, discovered cure for Ebola virus.

“From now on, we will no longer say that Ebola is incurable. These advances will help save thousands of lives. Now that 90 per cent of patients can go into the treatment centre and come out completely cured, they will start believing it and building trust in the population and community.” Said Prof. Jean-Jacques Muyembe-Tamfum, the pioneer of the cure for the deadly Ebola virus. The names of the drugs are REGN-EB3 and mAb114.

This is a brief biography of Prof. Jean-Jacques Muyembe-Tamfum....

He is a Congolese. He is from the Democratic Republic of Congo

He is a medical doctor

He was born in March 17, 1947. He is 77 years

He studied Medicine in the the Lovanium University (present day University of Kinshasha), DR Congo and had his PhD in Virology in the University of Leuven, Belgium

He is a professor of Virology

He was a one time Dean of Medicine, University of Kinshasha.

He is reported to have investigated the first Ebola outbreak alongside Peter Piot.

In his first contact with an Ebola patient, he didn’t wear hand gloves. Blood spilled on his hands, but he washed them off immediately and survived the virus. According to him, “If I had not washed my hands I would have died”.

He has been quarantined several times over his frequent contact with the virus

He is General Director of the Democratic Republic of the Congo National Institute for Biomedical Research. A position he has held since 1998

He is described as the "Ebola hunter" because he has dedicated his life to the eradication of Ebola from he face of the earth.

He first came across ebola virus in 1976 at a Belgian hospital in Yambuku, DRC. Using a long steel rod, Muyembe took liver biopsies from three nuns who had died, but the results were inconclusive.

Prof. Jean-Jacques Muyembe-Tamfum was the first scientist to come into contact with the Ebola virus and survive.

He has chaired the international committees that looked to control the Ebola outbreaks in Gabon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

He was the first to link the spread of Ebola virus to fruit bats exposure.

He pioneered the use of an ebola vaccine to limit the spread of the virus, including vaccinating health care providers.

Prof Muyembe was the first to develop the anti-ebola serum therapy.

Apart from Ebola virus, he has done numerous researches on Marburg virus, cholera, trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness), influenza, polio, Congo virus, Rift valley fever and Lassa fever.

He has been looking for the cure for Ebola since 1976!

Health / On Maraji, Please Let Us Have A Re-think - Dr Olufunmilayo by udomoh(m): 6:48pm On Aug 12, 2019
On Maraji please let us have a re-think – Dr Olufunmilayo

Do recall that Maraji (Gloria Oloruntobi) made a controversial sallah day statement against Muslims and people of other faith or religion which has long gone viral and right now trending on various social media platforms.

Many persons have been reacting including the UK based Medical doctor and social media influencer @drolufunmilayo who called for love, caution and respect for rights and people’s beliefs.

Read his opinion below…

#Maraji

As an atheist, you believe the idea of God is stupid, nobody comes for you.

As a Muslim, you believe only Muslims would go to Jannah, nobody comes for you.

Almost every religion says non-adherents will go to hell.

But the children of Ekwensu are crying over Maraji’s comments.

As a Muslim, Some of You won’t marry a Christian.

As a Christian, Some of You won’t associate with Muslims.

Simple sallah meat, you will trash it.

And that’s perfectly okay.

It is your decision and you owe nobody apologies. So why is Maraji not entitled to her own beliefs?

The cold fact about religion is that by default it mostly makes very exclusive claims about salvation and says absolutely that only its adherents will go to a heaven and nonadherents will go to a hell.

That’s the simple fact.

Almost every mainstream religion says this clearly.

Celebrities are human beings. Like you and I.

They are people who may hold on to clear religious beliefs- just like many of us do.

It is insane, manipulative and absolutely stupid to bully Maraji into silence over her religious beliefs- just to please some sensitive snowflakes.

A true Christian believes only Christians go to heaven.

A true Muslim believes only Muslims go to heaven.

Now wether these people say or not say these things is a different thing entirely- but this is what those religions clearly teach.

I don’t get these online silly tantrums.

Every religion basically pisses off the other religion. That’s the simple cold hard truth.

You just ignore or suck it up.

And by the way, Religious beliefs as a whole can be offensive to atheists for example.

Should we all discard our religious beliefs just to please them then?

“Cancel Maraji”

“Cancel Maraji”

For stating her own religious beliefs on her own page? What exactly is driving this disgusting insanity?

Cancel Culture needs to be checked and cautioned.

It is senseless, baseless and stupid bullying that must never be allowed to go unchallenged.

Religion is offensive.

Very very offensive.

Except we are out here wanting to tell people to discard their religious beliefs for us to feel better, I’m not sure I understand what the agitation is all about.

Maraji is not the problem here.

What she said is true in her religion.

And unfortunately you must realise when it comes to religious proclamations- people will offend you and you will get offended.

It’s by nature the way religious proclamations and discussions go.

Expecting anything less or something else is just being unrealistic and ridiculous.

“Oh she should not have mentioned other religions” Oh well maybe. Maybe not.

Because her religion- just as many religions- all claim to be the only way and right way.

So wether mentioned or not, these things are clearly implied.

So getting upset over that is very laughable.

It’s like everyone of us being in different schools and each school teaches its students to believe and say “my school is the best school in the world”.

Then we say, that’s okay as long as you don’t mention my school.

Lmaoooo, that sounds cool but it literally makes no sense.

If I say “my school is the best, better than Unilag, better than UI, better than OAU”.

You can cry all you want, but you either have to ignore the claim or make the same claim that your own school is better.

Expecting someone not to offend you is just really reaching and funny.

Overall, to be clear, I won’t tweet exactly what Maraji tweeted, but I understand IF someone chooses to tweet like that. It is their belief.

It is their religion.

And part of free speech is that human beings must have the freedom to express their beliefs without being bullied.

This whole “cancel Maraji” “cancel Maraji” is really an attempt to control people, decide what they say and bully them into silence- Except they write what we like or say what would please us.

And that is exactly the disgusting sense of entitlement that must never be allowed.

So was Maraji offensive? Maybe. But contexts matter. She made a religious proclamation- which is mostly always offensive.

However its sugarcoated.

What we must never do and never allow is an attempt to gag or strangle her into silence- over a religious belief she’s entitled to.

honestly don’t get it. Any opinion that doesn’t sit well, “boycott” the brand, “cancel” the person and whatever yada yada yada that the mob can come up with all in a desperate agenda to stifle a differing opinion.

I don’t get why that must be the only way to handle issues.

Caution. Love

Thank you

Yours sincerely,

Dr Olufunmilayo

Health / Do Not Starve Your Partner Of Sex During Your Menstrual Period- Dr Emmanuel by udomoh(m): 12:46pm On Aug 11, 2019
Can you have sex during menstrual period?

In a controversial tweet, a medical doctor @DrEmto has advised ladies not to starve their partners of sex during their menstrual periods. He went ahead to explain how to go about it to achieve maximum benefits. He also said it was better done with protection.

His tweets drew different reactions from the social media, while some gave him props, others said it was disgusting, a knowledge better kept to himself and not shared.
To some, his comments were sexist and male gratifying.

Read his tweets below….

“Try not to starve your partner of sex during your Mentrual period as a woman.

There are advantages of having sex during your period.

Although it can get messy anyways, but then it can reduce the duration of the period, relief cramps to an extent, and you should use a CD!
Hey guys! Before your rage wears a dirty pant, please know that it’s optional… Some people do it anyways!

So this is how to have safe sex during your periods! You don’t want to stain the sheets with blood because it can get messy. So try having sex in the shower

I’d advice this than to missionary position or laying on the side which are also good but please have an extra sheet.
An extra sheet that will help prevent the main bedsheets from getting stained. LADIES should also learn to use a mentrual cup – yeah it helps. And the gents involved have to wear condoms because trust me, the risk for STI is there and emmm you don’t want to get her pregnant.
Prevent infection and pregnancy and try as much as you can to keep it tidy, hence the shower is a good place under running water… You know I don’t know anything right? So please don’t take this personal. It’s all about facts in science.
Some ladies get extra Hot during their period actually.
Some actually have sex during their periods… It makes them feel better.
So many persons have been asking if sex was safe during menstrual period and I have finally answered it” he said.

Who cares? Nature made it that way. We all need a break. 4 days is not long. We will start after that. Life is not about sex. There is more to a woman than sex. It is when she is mensurating that you will see that. For the blood sex, that is nil for me and many men

Health / Flagyl And Tetracycline Are Not First Aid For Diarrhea – Aproko Doctor by udomoh(m): 7:26am On Aug 11, 2019
Dear Nigerians, flagyl and tetracycline are not first aid for diarrhea

Medical doctor and social media influencer @aproko doctor took to his Twitter handle to beg Nigerians to desist from using flagyl (metronidazole) and tetracycline (red and yellow capsule) as first aid for the treatment of diarrhoea citing antibiotics abuse and resistance as reasons.

Read his tweets and the responses that followed below….

Dear Nigerians, flagyl and tetracycline are not first aid for diarrhea

You are causing more problems for yourself and people around you by abusing antibiotics.

Most cases of diarrhea will resolve on its own, except otherwise, what you need is something to stop the diarrhea and take lots of water or Oral rehydration salts ORS for short

Abusing antibiotics may lead to antibiotic resistance where the bacteria now defeats the antibiotics

If you must stop diarrhea, ask your pharmacist for antidiarrheal medication to stop it, what this drug will do is to slow down the rate at which your intestine empties, and in the process, lessen the diarrhea Going for antibiotics first will only harm you in the long run.

If you however see blood while having diarrhea, then you should see your doctor immediately YOU need to stop this habit of randomly taking antibiotics when you do not feel well

YOU ARE CAUSING WAHALA

Recently, there has been cases of gonorrhea resistant to major antibiotics

ONLY TAKE ANTIBIOTICS when it has been prescribed by a doctor. There are even cases that antibiotics cause diarrhea, will you take another antibiotic for that?

Please let us prevent major catastrophes by minimizing our use of antibiotics

Health / No Exercise Or Drug Can Grow The Penis- Dr Olufunmilayo by udomoh(m): 12:01pm On Aug 09, 2019
NO exercise can grow the penis.

NO medicine can grow the penis.

Your penis stopped growing at 21years.

NO exercise can grow the penis.

No exercise will increase your penile girth

No hand exercise will increase your penis size

You cannot make your pennis grow thicker and longer naturally

No food will increase your penis size

NO medicine can grow the penis.

Your penis stopped growing at 21years.

Whatever you have now is what you will have.

Use it well.

Good morning.

All over the world, people have associated a lot of unrealistic things to penis size.

Both men and women.

Some people have come to see it as the longer/bigger it is, the more fertile, the more masculine, the more stronger, the more courageous a man is.

NONE OF THIS IS TRUE.

The size of a man’s penis has NOTHING to do with the strength of a man. Or the fertility of a man. Or the masculinity of a man. Or the value of a man. These are all common myths in a world that is largely ignorant and completely uninformed about the penis- and what it can do.

This obsession with Penis Size is the reason for some unscrupulous drug/herb companies from the roadside sellers to online markets who exploit the ignorance of men who assume that a bigger penis is the missing piece to complete their lives. But sadly, these men are sold lies.

There is NO scientifically proven evidence ANY cream or medication can satisfactorily increase penis significantly. Or even increase it at all. It’s ALL a scam. And a fraud. The men in their posters are already heavily endowed models whose penis grew NATURALLY. And that’s it.

Men literally do CRAZY things just to get a bigger penis. ALL to no avail. Indian mystics known as Sadhus stretch their penis from an early age by hanging weights on it, while the Topinama tribesmen of Brazil will get poisonous snakes to bite their penis in a bid to enlarge it.
Some men think repeated masturbation or certain sex positions like doggystyle will enlarge/lengthen the penis. My brother, don’t die before your time. What you have right now is ALL you will have. Spend your energy on using it properly, rather than waste money on buying lies.
IF somebody is shouting “deeper” “deeper”, “harder”, “harder”, you better tell her to calm down. You can’t go deeper than you are already going. You can’t give what you don’t have. After giving all you have, there’s no “deeper” to go, except you want to dig your own grave.

But seriously, people panic over penis size simply because of pornography and modern cultural myths. What you fail to realise is that the people you see in pornography are NOT average men. For that kind of job, they get the men with the biggest joysticks. Not the average guy.
So what’s the average penis size? For teenagers, it’s difficult to say what the average is. Because from age 11-18years, a boy’s penis is actively growing. By age 21, it stops growing and it has reached its final size for almost every man. That’s for teenagers, on average.
But what of men? Most men will have a penis size about 9cm when it is not erect. That’s barely 4 inches. And when erect, most men will have a penis size about about 13cm to 18cm. That’s about 5 to 7inches. So all those 9inches, 12 inches men you see in porn, are NOT average.
I need to reiterate again: What you watch in porn, or hear some men talk about is NOT average at all. So don’t feel less of a man, if you measure your penis and it is about 9cm when not erect and between 13-18cm when erect. That is PERFECTLY NORMAL. And no cause for alarm.
On the angle of an erect penis, there is variations. Some face up, some face down, bend right, bend left. ALL of this is normal as long as you can urinate effectively and have sex enjoyably. There is NO cause for alarm. All joysticks will not sleep and face the same direction.
However if yours is bent is an abnormally curved way and it gives you problems, see your doctor or a urologist. There’s a disease called Peyronie disease that may be responsible for this. Don’t take it lightly and see your doctor to sort this out as soon as possible.
Another thing to talk about is how men themselves view their joysticks that gives them low self esteem. Actually if you look at your penis yourself from the top, it would look smaller than it actually is. So your brain messes with you and makes you think oh you have a small penis.
The best way to have an objective view is to stand in front of a mirror and see what is in the mirror. That’s what someone else will see while looking at you and that tells you the truth. I’m just trying to tell you that your worries are actually sometimes exaggerated.
And you know the funny part to all this? It is that DESPITE all I’ve said, many men still want a bigger/longer penis. Lmao. A research by Professor Kevan Wylie of Sheffield University using 50,000 men and women showed that 45% of men want bigger penis, and 85% of women are okay with their spouse/partner’s penis size.
So what does that imply? The craze for bigger/longer penis is mainly a psychological anxiety in the minds of men. Even the women are mostly not bothered and they are okay with it. That’s actually what the fact is.
And to add to all this, A bigger penis doesn’t mean better sex. A longer penis doesn’t mean higher fertility. A huge penis doesn’t actually mean anything at all. If we are being very factual and objective.
Carry your Tiger Battery with pride. And use it to its maximum potential.
Anyway, I hope this short write up has helped reassure you that you don’t need to worry about your penis size.
The function of penis is:
To urinate
To have sex (for children/pleasure). As long as you do those two with no problems, you are fine and good.
Don’t worry yourself.
In summary, NO exercise can grow the penis.
Thanks for reading.
Please write your experiences and feel free to ask questions.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Olufunmilayo

Health / LASG Shuts 52 Illegal Substandard Pharmacies And Patent Medicine Stores by udomoh(m): 5:58pm On Aug 08, 2019
LASG SHUTS 52 ILLEGAL SUBSTANDARD PHARMACIES AND PATENT MEDICINE STORES

No fewer than 52 pharmacies, patent medicine shops and unlicensed premises at Isolo, Egbeda, Ikotun, Bariga and Somolu in Oshodi-Isolo, Alimosho and Somolu Local government areas of Lagos were sealed yesterday Tuesday August 7 by the Lagos State Taskforce on Counterfeit, Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods for offences bordering on illegal operation, operating beyond scope amongst others, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Titilayo Goncalves has said.

Goncalves who disclosed this today when she received the report of the operation by the Task Force explained that the affected pharmacies and patent medicine shops indulged in the practice of operating without license, engaging unqualified persons to man and dispense drugs to unsuspecting citizens, operating beyond scope through sale of ethical products and displaying and storing drugs in unconducive environments which compromise the potency and integrity of the drugs rendering them ineffective.
“Although some of the pharmacies visited were registered, it is disheartening to note that quite a number of them had no qualified pharmacists on duty and displayed expired drugs for sale to the public”, She said.
Goncalves added that some of the premises visited also engaged in illegal clinical practices such as patient admission and setting of intravenous infusions. She noted that such practice is unacceptable and vowed that the State Government will do whatever is necessary to enforce the law and sanction erring operators.
“ The sealing of the affected pharmacies and patent medicine stores was in accordance with the provisions of Section C34 of the Counterfeit, Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods Miscellaneous Provision Act of 1999, No. 25”, She said.
The Permanent Secretary stated that licensed patent medicine vendors are authorized to sell only drug products in their original packs in approved pack size as produced by the manufacturing companies. “The law prohibits dispensing and wholesaling of drugs by patent medicine vendors,” She said.

While noting that the recent operation of the taskforce was coming on the heels of the war being waged against fake drugs and illegal drug shops, Goncalves warned that the activities of the State Task Force on Fake Drugs would not only be sustained, but intensified until operators in the sector adhere strictly to the provisions of the law on the operation of pharmacies and patent medicine shops, in order to safeguard the health of the citizenry.

Speaking in the same vein, Director Pharmaceutical Services in the Ministry, Dr. Moyosore Adejumo said that the State Government will not relent in its efforts to stop the inherent dangers associated with the operations from unlicensed pharmaceutical outlets and drug shops.

She added that the Task Force through the Pharmaceutical Inspectorate Unit (PIU) of the Pharmaceutical Services Directorate has been re-energized to intensify the on-going war against fake, expired and substandard drugs being peddled by unlicensed and illegal premises.
“This closure is thus part of the government’s renewed efforts to sanitize the drug distribution system and curb proliferation of fake drugs in the State” Adejumo said.

She explained that an investigative meeting would be held with owners of the sealed premises to make further inquiries on the status of the sealed premises and to notify them of the procedures and appropriate conditions to be met for reopening in line with government regulations and payment of administrative fee.

The enforcement and compliance raid by the State Task force on Counterfeit, Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods was carried out in collaboration with the National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Pharmacists’ Council of Nigeria (PCN), Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Federal Taskforce on fake drugs and the Police Officers from Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Task Force) of Lagos Police Command.

Health / Adam Litwin: Jailed As A Fake Doctor, Now A Real Doctor (true Story) by udomoh(m): 3:22pm On Aug 08, 2019
He went to jail as a fake doctor. Now he is a real one: The story of Adam Litwin.

Adam Litwin’s “jail to hospital story” was first shared on Twitter by a health reporter called Soumya who knows him personally and also interviewed him.

Her tweets:

This man went to jail in 2000 for pretending to be a surgeon at UCLA. In the two decades since, he has gone to medical school and become a doctor.

Adam Litwin wants to be a doctor more than I have wanted anything in my life. As a teenager, he carried a pager and would page himself pretending to be the hospital. When he met his now ex-wife, he told her he he was a cardiologist, though he hadn’t finished undergrad.

He’s a doctor now, and won’t let you forget it. Unprompted, he emailed me photos of him in a white coat. More than once, he texted me the phrase “doctor’s orders!” When we met in Chicago, he wore a fleece that was far too thin for the cold but was embroidered with “A. Litwin, MD”

Litwin still has to get into residency. He didn’t this year. But at 47, he isn’t giving up hope. There is no Plan B. “I have persevered and I have struggled to be who and where I am today way too much and come much too far to give up now,” he says.

I think it’s hard to know how to feel about Litwin from hearing his story. I will say that after talking to him for several months, I think he’s a lot like Michael Scott from the Office. Aaaand I’ll leave it at that.

Our own @montemorin wrote about what happened with Litwin at UCLA way back when. The weirdest detail is Litwin’s white coat. it had his face on it! “Nobody had a coat like that,” said the deputy city attorney. “It was like he was trying to be noticed.”

Some collaborating snippets from Dr Adam Litwin as culled from the LATIMES….

Wearing a surgical gown and a mask, 9-year-old Adam Litwin watched in awe as his grandfather, a podiatrist, mended a fractured foot.

“I was just mesmerized,” Litwin recalled. “I literally knew from that moment on that there was nothing else I wanted to do with my life.”

He began to ask for medical posters and textbooks for his birthday. He had his own stethoscope. In his teens he wore a beeper and paged himself, pretending the hospital needed him to consult on a patient.

Decades later, Litwin, now 47, has finally achieved his dream. He graduated from a medical school in the Caribbean last year and passed the final board exam required to be a doctor.

Though Litwin must still complete some training and licensing before he can treat patients on his own, he is an MD in the United States.

But to accomplish his goal, he first had to get past the time 20 years ago when he went to jail — for impersonating a doctor at UCLA. He at age 28, pleaded guilty to three misdemeanors: forging a prescription, impersonating a doctor and stealing state property.

The way Litwin tells it, he ended up at UCLA because he was blinded by his love of medicine.

“Have you ever wanted something so badly in your life, and you knew you were never going to get it? What it would be like, what it would feel like to be that person, even if just one day?” Litwin said.

But his past continues to impede him.

Missouri’s medical board denied his application for a license last year, saying it did not believe he could have spent so much time pretending to be a resident at UCLA and not have treated patients.

“The lack of complete forthrightness about the incident in the UCLA Medical Center reflected negatively on your credibility and weighed against a finding of sufficient rehabilitation,” the denial letter reads.

Litwin has vowed to appeal the decision and not give up hope to practice the profession of his dream-Medicine.

Health / Ada Priscilla Nzimiro: The Tragic Story Of The First Igbo Female Medical Doctor by udomoh(m): 8:18am On Aug 08, 2019
Ada Priscilla Nzimiro, the first medical doctor from igboland, Eastern Nigeria, her life and times. Ada Nzimiro birth, education, occupation, legacy and death.

To some it was a tragic story, while to me, it was a case of unfinished greatness and a feat that paved the way for the liberation and educational emancipation of the African women in general and the Nigerian women in particular. Becoming a certified medical doctor as at 1950 in a then world and society full of male chauvinists and sexists is not an easy feat. She deserves to be in Nigeria’s hall of fame.

So what do you know about Ada Priscilla Nzimiro, the first female igbo medical doctor?

Below are the few things I was able to gather from scanty sources on the internet and the library.

1. Ada Priscilla Nzimiro was born on the 30th of April, 1923 in Port Harcourt Nigeria.

2. Her parents were Richard Okwosha Nzimiro (father) and Mary Nwametu Onumonu (mother)

3. Her father was the first Mayor of Port Harcourt in 1956 and died in office in 1959 while her mother was described as a “wealthy merchant” that traded in palm oil, salt and European products.

4. Mary Nwametu Onumonu (1898–1993), was a wealthy merchant, political activist, and member of the NCNC who galvanised Igbo women for the Biafran war effort in 1967 and lost all her landed properties in Port Harcourt after the war due to her role in trying to divide the country.

5. Historians were able to trace her family roots or lineage to Oguta, present-day Imo state.

6. She enrolled for university for education in 1945 in Scotland after her secondary education in Nigeria.

7. She attended medical school, had medical training and earned her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) in 1950 at the University of Glasgow, Scotland.

8. She was the first woman from Igboland to graduate as a medical doctor.

9. She died tragically just a year after graduation on the 22nd of March, 1951 at the age of 27.

10. She barely practised medicine for 1 year.

11. The cause of her death was described by historians as “unnatural” yet undisclosed causes.

12. Her sudden demise came as a rude shock to her family, friends and well-wishers

13. She was buried a month after in Oguta, present-day Imo state.

14. She was neither married nor engaged while alive. She had no child.

15. Ada Priscilla Nzimiro parents in their benevolence established two schools at Oguta in 1945, one of which is William Wilberforce Academy (WWA), remamed Priscilla Memorial School to honour her memory and preserve her legacy and feat in medicine.

16. As the first female medical doctor from her region, Nzimiro inspired many young women to pursue medicine as a career.

Conclusion: Though she died too early and couldn’t fulfil her promising medical career, she paved the way for the liberation and education of many women dominating different fields of knowledge today. #Respect to an Amazon#

I’m ashamed Kwara recorded 50% new polio cases- AbdulRazaq

~Flags off state response to curb polio outbreak

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Tuesday said it was a shame that the state recorded 50% of the new polio cases in Nigeria, saying he would deploy necessary resources to fight the virus.

“It is a shame that Kwara has 50 percent of the new outbreak. We shouldn’t be dealing with fresh polio in this state now. But we will give the necessary supports to put an end to that,” AbdulRazaq said in Ilorin, the state capital, as he flagged off the polio outbreak response activities, exactly five years after the state government last supported routine polio immunisation programme.

The governor, who commended various global agencies for their support, urged parents and other stakeholders to key into the vaccination of under-five children to halt the spread of the deadly virus.
“I call on Kwarans to join hands with our partners to interrupt the transmission of the Polio virus in Kwara State and Nigeria at large,” he said.

“I am appealing to all mothers, caregivers, heads of households, religious bodies, markets and schools to as a matter of necessity make all children under 5years of age available for the vaccination exercise, irrespective of their previous vaccination status as the campaign will be conducted as many times as possible.

Adamu also commended AbdulRazaq for establishing various task forces to monitor Kwara’s response to the polio.

Reports said the tragedy occurred around 12:00am when some of the students were leaving the campus after reading overnight for exams.
The bridge, which linked the university and the hostels, was said to have collapsed under the current of the water underneath.

Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Abdulazeez Ahmed confirmed to Channels TV that four students died and eight others injured.

Health / Lady Accuses Hospitals Of Turning C-section To A Profit Making Venture by udomoh(m): 2:46pm On Aug 06, 2019
Lady accuses hospitals of turning C-Section to a profit making venture, gets lambasted.

A lady on Twitter that goes by the name Lolo Cynthia has accused medical doctors and hospitals of deliberately carrying out Cesarean section on women for the purpose of making more money. She said she got this information from local market women who told her they prefer visiting traditional birth attendants (TBAs) because they found out that the general and private hospitals around them deliberately carryout operation on them to deliver their babies so as to make money.

Contrary to the thumps up she expected, many Twitter users lambasted her for generalizing from questionable sources. Others accused her of been a “Hebrew Women Crusader” and a contributor for Nigeria’s maternal mortality records.

Why are hospitals making pregnant women give birth through CS even when they don’t need it?? Speaking to local women at Ikorodu and I keep hearing that many of them are going to traditional birth attendants because the Government hospitals keep saying they need CS.

It’s more expensive and the women complain that they don’t even wait for them to have contractions… It’s straight to CS. This costs 100k plus and many cannot afford it!! I have heard of this in the private hospitals as well.. Is this a way to extort money from people?

There is NOTHING, I repeat NOTHING EXTRA, that a doctor in a GOVERNMENT hospital stand to gain from recommending an unnecessary Caesarean Section for women who do not need it.
If this was a private practice setting, you could argue that they want money for their pockets, but not in a government hospital. Let him/her do 15 Caesarean Sections in a day, the take home is still the same at the end of the month.

What do they know? How can they say that they don’t need it ?? Are they doctors?? Do they know what the doctors have seen ?? I actually blame doctors sometimes cause they don’t take time to explain, these women need the explanations even if it’s to speak pidgin or local dialect.

A social media user @CollinsUma has called on Nigerians to come to the aid of a 10 year old pregnant child who was raped and impregnated by an unknown person and dumped in a general hospital in Benue for delivery.

Read his tweets….

Yesterday a heavily pregnant 10 year old child in labour was dumped at a General Hospital in Makurdi. She’d been raped. No one knows who her rapist is @Dr_Ukan moved her to a private hospital. This morning she delivered through CS. She needs our help. Baby food, clothes etc.
She was delivered of a baby girl weighing 2.5kg at birth. I can send you a contact in Makurdi that will receive anything you wish to send. Thanks.

I’ve received N45,000 for this girl and her baby. Soon I’ll drop contacts for collection of materials in Lagos and Abuja. Thank you to everyone for your responses!

Reactions!.....

Sorry can you check that you tweeted correctly, you said “heavily pregnant TEN YEARS OLD CHILD”….I’m sure that was a mistake

Olasumbo Apanpa@ApanpaOlasumbo

This is terrible, 10 years old! But she at least will know who raped her now, so not true that “nobody knows her rapist”! But doesn’t she have any family, plus she looks older than 10 years old to me?

Oluseun@XXIXVXIXVII

@Dr_Ukan
If jazz is real, this is the kind of case we really need it for. Discover who the rapist is his and have him suffer painfully before he is killed by his penis cut off and he bleeds to death.

Smily E. Alechenu@emmysmily

Beyond money, she needs much more:
– family support
– emotional/psychological support
– psycho-social support
– she needs to go to/continue schooling
– mentorship

Quite unfortunate! Any idea who dumped her? Were you able to reach out to her parents? God bless and protect mother and child.

Again, and it is disappointing that we have to keep repeating this, this girl is a minor; a child. Her image should not be splattered across the internet, no matter your best wishes. Her face should have been blurred. You are not helping her. Take her pictures down.

What has become of us in this country, which mad animal did this to a child? Those people who raped that child will NEVER know peace, no matter how long they live. Please send details of how to help.

I don’t know if am the only one thinking this way, but I think after the rape parent should have given her pills that would have prevented this pregnancy and other STD.. Or she doesn’t have parent as well and wasn’t living with anybody??

J@Judithontv

she is an Internally Displaced Person who doesn’t have access to basic living amenities so I doubt your suggestion would have been feasible.

This is a true story. Just called the hospital and behold the MD is my classmate. This is a sad story. Please support her with all you can.

.............................More details emerge........ ............

More details emerge from an eye witness reporter on Facebook called Abdullah Odumburu Peter who gave a clearer picture of the unfortunate event.

A ten year old girl, Masenengen who was impregnated by a yet to be identified rapist in Benue State has given birth to a bouncing baby girl.
Masenengen an orphan, it was learnt, got impregnated by the pedophile after she was displaced by the farmers-herders crisis which rocked her village in Guma Local Government Area of Benue state last year.
She then relocated along with her uncle to somewhere in the North Bank area of Makurdi where the perpetrator allegedly raped her and put her in the family way.

Masenengen was in labor for three days before her uncle later took her to the General Hospital, North Bank, Makurdi where a Good Samaritan took her picture and posted her story on the social media on Sunday night.
Her story immediately caught the attention of Ukan Kurugh, a humanitarian activist who alongside other activists rushed to the hospital and transferred her to the Foundation hospital in Makurdi where she was delivered of her baby weighing 2.5kg through C-Section at about 3am on Monday morning.

At the time of filing this report, the Foundation Hospital delivered has become a Jerusalem of sort as people from all walks of life have continued to throng the medical facility to have a glimpse of the young girl and her baby.

It was also gathered that several other individuals both from within and outside the country have also continued to call in to make one donation or the other towards assisting the little girl and her baby.
However, National Coordinator of Jireh Doo Foundation, Ms. Josephine Habba who was at the hospital said the victim has named the perpetrator adding that she would not relent until the rapists is apprehended and made to face the wrath of the law.

Health / Leonid Rogozov: First & Only Man To Perform Appendix Surgery On Himself (photos) by udomoh(m): 4:58pm On Aug 05, 2019
Wonders and unbelievable things have happened in the world of medical practice, notable among them is Leonid Rogozov, the first and only doctor to have successfully performed an appendectomy on himself and survived it- lived to tell his story.

While doing a scientific research in Antarctica, Dr. Leonid Rogozov has his appendix burst. With no surgeon nearby, he decided to handle the operation himself. In the end, he recovered well and went on to live a long and happy life .

Read the story below as culled from Wikipedia….

On the morning of 29 April 1961, Rogozov experienced general weakness, nausea, and moderate fever, and later pain in the lower right portion of the abdomen. None of the possible conservative treatment measures helped. By 30 April signs of localised peritonitis became apparent, and his condition worsened considerably by the evening. Mirny, the nearest Soviet research station, was more than 1,600 km (1,000 mi) from Novolazarevskaya. Antarctic research stations of other countries did not have an aircraft. Severe blizzard conditions prevented aircraft landing in any case. Rogozov had no option but to perform the operation on himself.
The operation started at 02:00 local time on 1 May with the help of a driver and meteorologist, who were providing instruments and holding a mirror to observe areas not directly visible, while Rogozov was in a semi-reclining position, half-turned to his left side. A solution of 0.5% novocaine was used for local anaesthesia of the abdominal wall. Rogozov made a 10–12 cm incision of the abdominal wall, and while opening the peritoneum he accidentally injured the cecum and had to suture it. Then he proceeded to expose the appendix. According to his report, the appendix was found to have a dark stain at its base, and Rogozov estimated it would have burst within a day. The appendix was resected and antibiotics were applied directly into the peritoneal cavity. General weakness and nausea developed about 30–40 minutes after the start of the operation so that short pauses for rest were repeatedly needed after that. By about 04:00 the operation was complete.

After the operation gradual improvement occurred in the signs of peritonitis and in the general condition of Rogozov. Body temperature returned to normal after five days, and the stitches were removed seven days after the operation. He resumed his regular duties in about two weeks.

The self-surgery captured the imagination of the Soviet public at the time. In 1961 he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. The incident resulted in a change of policy, and thereafter, extensive health checks were mandatory for personnel to be deployed on such expeditions.

As at when he performed the appendix surgery on himself, he was 27 years old, he later lived for another 39 years before he died at 66 years in year 2000 of lung cancer. He was described in some quarters as a badass doctor.

Health / Be Careful With Contact Lenses (photos) - Dr Olufunmilayo by udomoh(m): 12:42pm On Aug 05, 2019
What are the harmful effects of contact lenses?

UK based medical doctor and social media influencer Dr. Olufunmilayo has in his usual manner educated his followers on the harmful effects of contact lenses and also gave tips on how to manage them.

Read his tweets below………

Be careful with Contact Lenses.

They can cause a burst in tiny blood vessels of the eyes leading to a bleeding into the white eye part.

Wear your lenses gently and properly.

Don’t rub your eyes too hard.

Don’t be scared.

This usually goes on its own after 2weeks.
The pics you just saw is medically called “subconjunctival hemorrhage”.

It is the term for bleeding due to a burst blood vessel on the eye surface.

The layer covering the white of the eye is called the conjunctiva.

It has many small blood vessels that burst and bleed easily.

If blood vessels burst, blood can then leak under the conjunctiva. And when this happens, the blood causes part of the white of your eye to turn red.

This can be due to a slap, coughing, sneezing, vomiting, straining hard in toilet, eye infection and sometimes it just happens.

And of course, it can also be due to contact lens use. This is the commonest cause in young people.

The thing looks very scary but actually there’s no cause for alarm.

It is usually not a serious problem and tends to go on its own within 2-3weeks without any treatment.
But remember, that decision is NOT for you to make. You must go to the doctor because a very red eye may also be a sign of something serious that can easily lead to blindness and loss of the eye if nothing is done fast.

Apart from rupture of blood vessels and subconjunctival hemorrhage, other complications that may arise from contact lenses are blockage of oxygen supply to the eye, conjunctivitis (eye infection), loss of corneal reflex, eye irritation, red eyes, dry eyes, and corneal injury (corneal ulcer).

Thanks for reading.

Health / Never Sleep On The Same Bed As Babies, It Can Kill Them- Dr Olufunmilayo by udomoh(m): 10:38am On Aug 04, 2019
NEVER sleep in same bed as baby, it is a cause of sudden infant death. Bed sharing with baby is dangerous-Dr. Olufunmilayo

Medical doctor and social media influencer Dr. Olufunmilayo has warned new moms and dads to NEVER sleep in same bed as baby saying its causes sudden infant death, head injuries and falls among other things.

Read his tweets below.. …

As a new mom/dad:

NEVER sleep in same bed as baby.

NEVER lie the baby on its chest.

NEVER smoke around baby.

NEVER over-wrap the baby.

These causes SUDDEN DEATH in babies and children under one year.

Please don’t blame your mother in law. Or village people.

Some people also say that sometimes adults move during sleep leading to the baby being pushed to the floor from bed/sofa and the parent not knowing. The baby could suffer head injuries and die. A baby should sleep face up in its own cot or in a safe Moses basket.

That’s it.

Also putting a baby face down could lead to suffocation and difficulty breathing which could easily lead to death- if this position was to be for a long period of time like a whole night of say 10-12 hours. Again, all babies should lie in their own cot, on their back, facing up.

Because sleeping on the chest can cause difficulties with breathing as the nose presses against the bed. Spending a whole night in that position can kill them before morning.

Smoking (or smokes) around a baby is very dangerous. The lungs of a baby are still immature and inhaling secondhand smoke can easily cause suffocation, very serious damage and severe chest infections like pneumonia that can become life threatening and kill the baby.

Over-wrapping a baby is unsafe because once you overwrap a baby too tightly it makes it difficult for the baby to move. Now if the baby is faced down and suffocating already, inability to turn head and move to breathe will ensure the baby’s death.

Wrap a baby. But don’t overdo.

Finally, as a new parent/guardian, Follow all these advice, Take your baby far from smokers or places with smoke, far from people who randomly kiss/lick babies, far from overzealous people who will overwrap them and far from any unsafe practice.

Health / Hungarian Surgeons Separate Twins Conjoined On The Head In A 30 Hours Operation by udomoh(m): 7:55pm On Aug 02, 2019
Hungarian Surgeons separate twins conjoined on the head in a 30 hours operation.

A team of Hungarian doctors successfully performed the final separation of Bangladeshi twins who were conjoined at the head.

A Budapest-based foundation, Cselekves a Kiszolgaltatottakert (Action For Defenceless People Foundation), made this known on its website on Friday.

The foundation said that the 3-year-old girls – Rabeya and Rukaya – were recuperating after the complex, 30-hour surgery.

Much of their brains’ vascular system and bone tissue had to be replaced with implants.

The medical team comprised 35 Hungarian doctors led by Budapest neurosurgeon Andras Csokay.

The surgery was performed in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka.
The operation was financed by the foundation over several operations.

Three operations were needed to separate the craniopagus-type twins. Their condition is a rare phenomenon that affects one in every 2.5 million live births.

The process began last year in Dhaka with the separation of the shared cerebral vein parts.

Earlier this year, in Budapest, the twins were implanted with a special, Hungarian-designed system to expand their skin and soft tissue.

Following the successful second surgery, Andras Csokay, the neurosurgeon involved in the case, told Euro News it was a very complicated surgery with a high-mortality rate.

“The conditions of the twins are stable, but complications are possible,” the organisation said.

It said despite the risks the surgery would give the girls “better life opportunities” and open the door to new treatment options for other conjoined twins.
Parents Taslima Khatun Uno and Mohammed, both teachers, didn’t learn that the twins were conjoined until after their birth.

The news follows a similar story of conjoined twins, Safa and Marwa Ulah, from Pakistan. In July, the girls, aged two, were successfully separated after a series of operations carried out at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

Their operations, totalling over 50 hours, were paid for by a private donor and used more than 100 members of hospital staff.

“I see what they are doing. I see it; they show me.

“The things we are doing in our country today. There’s never been anything like it. We will be ending the AIDS epidemic shortly in America, and curing childhood cancer very shortly,” Trump said Thursday night.

Early this year, yours sincerely, the Nigerian Health Blog reported the the Russian Central Research Institute of Epidemiology has developed a new gene therapy medicine for people living with HIV, according to head of the federal health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor, Anna Popova.

“The Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor created a fundamentally new drug for gene therapy, gene prophylactic treatment and molecular vaccination against HIV.

“A highly active antiviral drug called Dinavir, which will soon be clinically tested, has been created,” Popova said on the sidelines of an international conference on HIV and AIDS in Moscow”. He said.

Health / Sexsomnia: A Misconception For “Spirit Husband” by udomoh(m): 1:57pm On Aug 01, 2019
 SEXSOMNIA

A misconception for “spirit husband”
__________________________________
. SCENARIO X
An X-Rated Visit By A “Spirit Husband”
——————————————————
He was sleeping, and deep throaty moans infiltrated into his ears, thence finding its way into his brain, exciting his nucleus acumbens– the pleasure centre of the brain.
It must be a dream, he thought. However, two things made him think better of it. First; something kept hitting his buttocks, perhaps a leg , and the bed was quaking violently. Secondly, the hard-on threatening to tear his boxers was sure as real as day and night.
Then he opened his eyes and turned to see his wife in some frenzy of ethereal proportion with guttural sounds coming form her mouth.

She was gyrating and thrusting her hips forwards rhythmically, like someone was on top of her ministering to her nether regions. Her eyes were rolled back into her head, while the hands were clutching on the bed sheet.
Totally unaware of him staring at her mouth agape with his jaws on the floor, she raised her nightie and her hands disappeared beneath them, away from his field of vision. A few thrusts and she squirmed and went limp. She was snoring before she even hit the bed.

All the while it felt as if there was a presence there with them in the room. He could feel ominous chills in his bone.

In the morning when she woke up, she had no memory of any of it. Absolutely none! She was more confused than he was, and genuinely so; and he had every reason to believe her.
He was never a believer of all that “spiritual husband” BS. However, this– this he couldn’t explain.
________________________________________
 DISCUSSION
——————————————————————–
The religious, and the superstitious, would be quick to attribute the incident described in the above scenario to a spiritual influence.
However, fact is that the “unfortunate victim” is suffering from a sleep disorder called SEXSOMNIA.
Sexsomnia is a type of PARASOMNIA, just like sleepwalking, confusional arousal, night terrors, etc.
Parasomnias are undesirable physical events [such as abnormal movements and behaviors], or experiences [like emotions, perceptions and dreams], that occur in various stages of sleep.

The behaviours may appear well thought out, purposeful and carefully planned, following a coordinated pattern as may be seen in somnambulism [sleepwalking]; on the other hand it may manifest as a group of disjointed, purposeless movements and behaviours.

Whichever is the case, the sufferers usually are unaware of themselves, and their environment, during the process; are not easily roused [as they are actually in DEEP SLEEP]; and would not have any memory of the incident afterwards. They are more like AUTOMATIONS controlled by parts of the brain that function remote from consciousness.

In SEXSOMNIAS, parasomnia manifests as indulgence in sexual activities during sleep. It may be in the form of hip thrusting, moaning as if having an orgasm, masturbation, and in extreme cases it may manifest as sexual assault, and even rape proper.
Whichever is the case, it is important to note that the sufferer is not responsible for his/her actions. It isn’t premeditated, and how it manifests doesn’t necessarily depend on the person’s real life fantasies and mental preoccupation prior to sleep.
In an episode of the popular TV Series– Doctor House, a woman who claims not to be having sex, is manifesting symptoms of pregnancy. A pregnancy test confirms she’s pregnant, and a DNA test shows the baby belongs to her ex, who she’d broken up with some 6 month before, who however lives im the same building with her, 2 floors below hers. Investigation later shows that almost every night, she sleepwalks to the guy’s room, wakes him up, starts romancing him, and they end up having sex.

However, the next day she seems to have no memory of it, as she doesn’t even as much as respond to the guy’s greetings, let alone engage him in a conversation– leaving him bewildered as to why she keeps coming back if she still hates that much.
The above based-on-a-true-life story, which was re-enacted in Grey’s Anatomy, may help us understand not just sexsomnias, but also parasomnias as a whole. For instance, there’s a celebrated case of sleep-walking, in which the somnabulist, went to an airport, went through the motions of booking a flight, waiting in the departure lounge, boarding, and then flying to a destination–all while still sleeping!

Finally; it is NOT SPIRITUAL, people! If it were, it wouldn’t be treatable with drugs.
And oh, by “drugs” I didn’t mean “otumokpo” from Baba Ijebu; I meant pharmaceutical drugs like the Benzodiazepines [eg Clonazepam]. Evidence of this abound in literature.

Now you know.

Health / “staph” Infections: The Misdiagnosis & Misconceptions- Nigerian Health Blog by udomoh(m): 9:21am On Aug 01, 2019
 “STAPH” INFECTIONS
The Misconceptions

“Staph” is arguably one of the most widely known disease-causing microbes in Nigeria. I wouldn’t be surprised if the first meaningful babble a toddler makes is “staph.”
The reason for this is not far fetched, as we have rickety cars, mounted with blaring speakers, at every nook and cranny, accusing “staph” of being responsible for virtually all the health inequities that plagues man.
” Staff ! Sta-fi-lo-ca-cus !! Staff air-rus !!! Ngwaa lee nke anyuru anyu; come and see the peed form…”
With these speakers continuously assaulting our ears with the “Staph message”, we are all so “staph-aware,” that once we think STIs, the first thing that comes into mind is “Staph”. The “Staph mentality” has so eaten deep into our minds that the average lady believes that the slightest vaginal discharge, whether physiological or not, is “Staph” knocking at her door.
And the road side labs are not helping, as a trip to such labs, for a vaginal swab test, almost always comes out with a result showing heavy growth of Staph aureus seen.”
How do you start dispelling a notorious misconception that has been propagated over the ages, that has been buried deep into the subconscious of the society by blaring speakers, and has been constantly “confirmed” empirically by the “all mighty” lab tests?
Well, you just try, starting with education.
_____________________________________
 THE FACTS ABOUT STAPH .
“Staph” is actually the short form of a disease-causing bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus, which is an organism normally found in the skin, which could also be found colonising the nasal mucosa [inner lining of the nose], the buccal cavity [the inside of the mouth], and the ears.
In its normal state in these areas, it is purely HARMLESS.
However with breeches in the epithelium lining these areas, say a break in skin, it can enter the deeper tissues and cause considerable harm.
.
In the skin, it can cause infections like:
•Impetigo
•Folliculitis
•Furuncles/ boils
•Carbuncles
•Abscesses
.
It can also cause respiratory tract infections like:
• Otitis
•Sinusitis
• Pneumonia
• etc
.
If ingested in food, the toxins can cause food poisoning with diarrhoeal disease.
.
From these points, it can gain access into the blood stream, causing Staphylococcal Bacteremia, which can be complicated by :
• Endocarditis [infection of the inner lining of the heart]
• Osteomyelitis [infection of the bones]
• Septic Arthritis [joint infections]
• Toxic Shock Syndrome
• Full blown Sepsis.
• Etc.
__________________________________
 “STAPH” AND GENITAL INFECTIONS
It is imperative to state unequivocally here that Staph DOES NOT CAUSE PID [Pelvic Inflammatory Disease] , neither does it cause any other form of STI [Sexually Transmitted Infection] for that matter! Disregard those noisy speakers and GET THAT INTO YOUR HEAD today!
One may then be surprised why most of the vaginal swab tests comes out with a result showing “heavy growth of staph.”
Well Staph, being ubiquitous, is a mere laboratory contaminant, and not the causative agent of those STIs. This means that while vaginal swabs are being taken, Staph [ a relatively harmless organism as far as the female genital tract is concerned] may have contaminated the specimen, perhaps when the swab stick mistakenly touches the skin of the vulva, or lower vagina.
Also contamination of specimen may be from the laboratory itself. And a report of “heavy growth of staph” may also be misinterpretation of the slides by a perhaps inexperienced lab personnel.
It is also important to note that Staph is not a [common] cause of UTI [Urinary Tract Infection]. Studies have shown that most cases of Staph Bacteruria [presence of Staph in urine] are mere secretion of the organism in urine in the setting of a concomitant Bacteremia [presence in blood], and is usually unaccompanied by the classical symptoms of UTI.
In catheterized patients however, Staph may colonise the urethral catheter and, if heavy enough, may lead to an established infection.
_________________________________
 CONCLUSION
“Staph” is not a known cause of any form of STI.
Even when vaginal swabs shows “heavy growth”, it should be disregarded, and the real cause of such discharges, if at all abnormal, should be sought for .
I also want to use this opportunity to reemphasize that not all vaginal discharges are abnormal, and that treating of such would only clear the protective, “good” vaginal microbes, and may thus lead to serious issues like Candidiasis and Bacterial vaginosis.
If it is not copious, or foul smelling, or doesn’t have an unusual color and consistency; or if it is not associated with any of the following: itching, rashes, excessive pain during sex, abnormally painful periods, abdominal pain, fever, painful and frequent urination, etc; it is unlikely abnormal vaginal discharge.
As always, when in doubt, visit a gynaecologist.

Health / Borno Governor Suspend Doctors Absent From Duty Indefinitely by udomoh(m): 7:14pm On Jul 31, 2019
Borno governor suspend doctors absent from duty indefinitely.

Doctors get suspension for absconding from duty

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno state has directed the suspension of some medical doctors who absconded from duty.
The governor paid an unscheduled visit to some hospitals in the state midnight of Tuesday.
At one of the hospitals, Shehu Ultramodern Hospital in Maiduguri, the governor did not meet any of the doctors who were supposedly on night duty at about 2:00 am when he toured wards and units.
At the State Specialist Hospital, the situation was not the same as the governor met a few of them.
Many are anticipating for what actions the governor will take against the defaulters.

He said he was not satisfied with the situation in the hospitals.
‘I am not satisfied at all, at the Specialist Hospital, I am ok, reasonable degree of participation was noticed but at the Umaru Shehu Hospital, it is disheartening to note that we could not see a single doctor on ground during my visit which lasted for about two hours,’ he said.
The governor explained his dismay that ‘the hospital has about 138 nurses on it pay roll; only ten nurses were seen.
‘It is also unfortunate that in every ward, we have only one nurse on duty.’
He further noted that all efforts made to reach out to the doctors on call proved abortive despite the fact that they were patients at the accident and emergency ward.
‘The situation is very pathetic and therefore, I have directed the CMD (Chief Medical Director) to suspend those staff that were not on ground.’
The duration of the suspension has not been stated, and efforts by our correspondent to find out did not immediately yield results.

He furthermore stressed that the government will henceforth only pay those that are working, stressing that ‘due civil service procedure shall be followed to bring back the situation to normalcy.’

Recall that early this week, the Nigerian Health Blog reported that, His Excellency Prof Babagana Umara Zulum, Mni, the Executive Governor of Borno State paid an unscheduled visit to Umaru Shehu Ultra Modern Hospital where met medical doctor on duty and he had to place a call to all the 10 medical doctors on call, but none of them answered their calls.

Health / Lagos Trains 1000 Health Workers On Emerging Infectious Diseases by udomoh(m): 6:21pm On Jul 31, 2019
The Lagos State Government has trained no fewer than 1000 health workers from public primary, secondary and tertiary health facilities on emerging infectious diseases at a two day continuing medical education (CME) programme organized by the State Ministry of Health.

The CME, according to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Titilayo Goncalves is geared towards enhancing the State preparedness and response in the prevention and control of the outbreak of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases such as Ebola, Lassa Fever, Monkey Pox and other viral hemorrhagic diseases.

She added that the training was also organized to improve competencies and relevance of staff, build robust relationship between health workers and clients as well as maintain a high level of professionalism in health service delivery stressing that topics on healthcare workers’ attitude, communication and coping with Stress were treated.

Said She “The Y2019 State Continuing Medical Education Program with the theme – Improving Quality Healthcare was organized for health workers to boost their capacity and enhance effective service delivery in the health sector”
“The theme was carefully selected to set a landmark in providing quality health to the citizenry and I am particularly enthusiastic about the topics because there is need for all healthcare workers to be prepared for any emerging infectious diseases, have a positive attitude and mindset towards our clients and be well equipped to be productive in the face of daily stress”.

Goncalves while stating that the best dividend of democracy any government can offer its citizens is the provision of Quality healthcare which is made available, accessible and affordable noted however that negative attitude of healthcare workers can make the delivery of quality, affordable and accessible health services a mirage irrespective of government effort.

She added that Ministry has slated various training, orientation and capacity building courses through continuing medical education, seminars and workshops for healthcare workers with the believe that constant development of health workforce will help meet the dynamic health needs of the State being a fast growing city with over 22 million people.

Dr. Goncalves stated further that the government remains committed and will leave no stone unturned in ensuring best practices in health care delivery across the State. She added that the State government will not relent in putting in place structures and facilities to ensure an efficient health care system in Lagos.
“Lagos State Government remains committed and determined in ensuring best practice in health care delivery and will continue to insist that the environment for the dispensation of medical care should be suitable for the promotion and maintenance of good health”, She said.
One of the Guest lecturers, Professor Akin Osibogun who is a Professor of Public Health and Community Medicine at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos who took on the topic Emerging Infectious Diseases: Role of Healthcare Workers in Prevention and Control said that health workers must ensure perpetual watchfulness over emerging diseases in order to prevent them from spreading.
He noted that health workers must always be in tune with realities of changes in behaviour so as to be proactive during emergencies. He stressed on the need to improve on disease reporting systems in the state as it will go a long way in reducing the spread of infectious diseases.

According to him, there are various strategies the country can put in place to prevent disease outbreaks. “A robust health records system will enable us to be watching the disease trends, and there is already an advance in technology of a vaccinology.
“We have vaccines against some diseases; so, for diseases of public interest, the government should fund the vaccination to prevent spread of those diseases.
“Public and private facilities have a responsibility to send reports to designated authorities, and in the case of Lagos State, the designated authority is the Ministry of Health.

“The Ministry of Health will maintain that watchfulness, because they will act on behalf of the citizens in putting in place interventions to control any disease outbreak,’’ he said.
Osibogun added that Health workers need to equip themselves with basics epidemiology principles to combat emerging diseases stressing that emerging diseases can break out at any point in time.
The two days CME programme was held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Secretariat, Alausa on the Monday 29th and Wednesday 31st July, 2019.

Health / “Am A Victim Of Domestic Violence And Abuse Please Help Me" (photos) by udomoh(m): 6:57am On Jul 31, 2019
An 18- year old teenager by name Philla Phong@phillaphong has called on Twitter family and indeed Nigerians for help over the repeated domestic violence and domestic abuse he has been suffering for the past couple of months from his biological father. He passionately plead for help and direction as his predicament is giving him suicidal thoughts.

Read his story below…….. …

“Someone should pls save me….I’m suffering from domestic violence…my biological dad hates me and is threatening to kill me….we have never had good rapport. He left me as a child at 18months and sent my mum away so my grandma has been taking care of me.

We just used to talk on phone since…then he came home around January..since then he do beat me and molest me he says he is a cultist and would kill me even though my grandma still begs him to calm down …yesterday night was when he broke the camels back…

I was watching tv and he came in and saw me watching it and he got vexed and said why was I watching that particular channel (Disney)and I was surprised at that query then out of annoyance he went to the kitchen and broke a ceramic plate and jumped on me and started stabbing me… I shouted for help because my grandma was in the room she rushed outside and begged him to leave me he said he wanted to kill me that I was bewitched and I was sent to him …..but due to my Grandma’s begging he left me alone and my grandmother helped me to treat the bruises..This morning he came to my room and asked why I didn’t go to school and I told him that I cannot go with that condition even grandma said I mustn’t leave the house he got annoyed and started beating me again till I shouted and he wanted to break my phone but my grandma saved me

Grandma took me to the hospital where I was treated I was given up to 18 stitches around my body due to the cuts …pls someone should save my life my dad hates me I don’t want to die pls …I don’t want ur money all I want is ur help pls help me he has promised to make me sad.

He even went ahead to tell my friends that I stole money and I do beg for food which I don’t please save me….I am a victim of domestic violence and I am depressed …he said that he will not let me have rest I should have taken pictures yesterday but I was so weak so I just took two.

I’m 18 yrs …my dad ran out of the house (his own parents) for the past 40 yrs so after we all pleaded for him to come back he came back this January…but presently I’m at my aunts house hiding. I have never seen my mother before”.

My opinion: Please this young teenager needs all the help he can get from us Nigerians. This domestic violence from the father he never knew as a child is enough to make him sad, depressed, develop a post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and suicidal thoughts, attempt or suicide. Domestic violence is both a criminal and a mental health issue.

Health / Rare! Inserted IMPLANON NXT Dislodged Into A Woman’s Left Lung by udomoh(m): 4:29pm On Jul 30, 2019
A contraceptive implant, implanon NXT to be precise, dislodged into the left lung of a woman in a very rare complication

Woman underwent surgery to remove it

Doctors blame it on rigorous exercise

Few cases of implanon migration recorded in history

Doctors have described the rare case of a woman who underwent surgery after a contraceptive implant moved from her arm to her lung.

An unnamed woman visited her doctor because she had experienced abnormal bleeding from her vagina for three months, according to the case report published in The BMJ.

The 31-year-old was otherwise healthy, had never had surgery, and had no family history of a condition that might explain her condition. She had also had regular menstrual cycles, and had used the Implanon NXT contraceptive for eight years. Doctors inserted an implant into her arm in 2010, then again in 2013, and once again in 2017.

She was referred to a gynecologist to take out the implant in the hope it would fix her bleeding. But when staff examined her arm, they realized it wasn’t there.

The woman then underwent an ultrasound. The image showed the implant was sitting to the left of her chest. An x-ray revealed more: the piece of plastic had become lodged in the lower lobe of her left lung. Doctors next had to work out whether it was in one of her vessels, or in the lung tissue. A CT scan confirmed the object was in the lower left vessel of her lung.

Doctors decided the woman needed surgery to remove the dislodged implant.

Surgeons carried out video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), a minimally invasive procedure where a small hole is made in the chest wall. A camera and surgical instruments are inserted into the opening, and medics can see inside the body using a video monitor.

The woman’s surgery went smoothly, and she didn’t suffer any complications. After four days in hospital, she was sent home. Doctors gave her the all-clear at a check-up, as her wounds were healing well and her lungs were functioning normally.

“Migration of an Implanon to the lung is very rare, with few cases described in literature,” wrote the doctors who treated the woman.

If the implant is inserted deeply, it can enter the venous system and then the pulmonary arterial system, warned the doctors. Exercising vigorously appears to increase the risk of vascular migration, they said.

Contraceptive implants are made up of two small rods the size of a match stick. The rods are put under the skin in the inside of the arm in order to prevent pregnancy. They include implanon, Jadelle, Nexplanon and Norplant.

They slowly release a hormone called progestogen (levonogestrel/etonogestrel). They work for up to 5 years.

You can have them taken out whenever you want and your ovulation will return almost immediately.

Health / Prof Zulum Met No Doctor On Duty During An Unscheduled Hospital Visit by udomoh(m): 10:53am On Jul 30, 2019
Prof Zulum pays an unscheduled visit to a hospital in Borno.

Governor Zulum’s Late Night Visit To Hospitals
At around 1:00 o’clock in the night Governor Babagana Umara Zulum pays an unscheduled visit to Umaru Shehu Ultra Modern Hospital as well as the State Specialist Hospital Maiduguri.

His Excellency Prof Babagana Umara Zulum, Mni, the Executive Governor of Borno State paid an unscheduled visit to Umaru Shehu Ultra Modern Hospital where met the pathetic condition of patients and there relatives.

Unfortunately at Umaru Shehu, the governor could not find a single medical Doctor on duty and he had to place a call to all the 10 medical doctors on call, but none of them answered the calls not knowing it was the governor that was calling.

Only 10 nurses were found on duty out of about 138 nurses on the payroll. The Governor scrutinized staff duty roasters and moved round the hospital to see things for himself.

He went round all the wards to see the situations of the patients and later requested for the hospital’s staff pay book and made role call.

The Governor also paid a similar visit to the State Specialist Hospital, unlike Umaru Shehu some few medical doctors were on duty at the Specialist Hospital when he arrived.

However, the Governor was not satisfied by the quality of services rendered at both Hospitals.

Health / Sleep Paralysis: Are “they” Pressing You Down At Night? – Dr Nonso by udomoh(m): 1:19pm On Jul 29, 2019
Is sleep paralysis a spiritual attack? Is sleep paralysis supernatural? Metaphysical explanation for sleep paralysis.

Medical doctor and social media influencer @aproko_doctor yesterday took to his social media handle to enlighten the public on the concept of sleep paralysis dispelling the long held beliefs in religious circles of a spiritual attack or phenomenon.

His tweets and reactions below….

Are “they” pressing you in the night?

Do you suddenly wake up not being able to move? Before you run for deliverance, before you give testimony in church, read this…

You might not be possessed

You may just have sleep paralysis.

Sleep what

When we dream, our body switches off the ability to move so that we don’t injure ourselves acting out the dreams

When we wake, that ability is switched on.
But sometimes the switch get problem, and we wake up paralysed.

This is terrifying, imagine being awake but not able to move.

You’re more likely to have sleep paralysis:

If you sleep on your back

If you’re not getting enough sleep

If you’re stressed or depressed

Or you have a sleep disorder

Sometimes genetics are implicated…

Here are a few ways that may help prevent sleep paralysis

1. Get enough sleep

2. Avoid caffeine just before bed time

3. Avoid noise or lights.

4. Pay attention to your mental health

Some drugs can be used to prevent or manage sleep paralysis

These drugs can reduce the REM sleep which is where most of the incidences occur.

Talk to your doctor

In other cases, if someone suddenly wakes up gasping for air, or run to a window. it may not be sleep paralysis, but may occur when the lungs are filled with fluid

This can happen in Heart failure, and becomes better if the person sits upright for a while.

Talk to a doctor

Reactions/Responses/Personal testimonies to sleep paralysis phenomenon

Dr Udomoh@DrUdomoh
You are removing food from pastors mouth. Today is Sunday o. What will they talk about now?

Taiwo Layor Akinrimisi@LayorTaiwo

Knowledge is indeed power!

Arth Guinness@jabusky17

Sleep paralysis ko sleep paralysis no VILLAGE PEOPLE AT WORK … If u like continue to believe it’s sleep paralysis and don’t go and pray …. U go hear am loud and clear like wen bomb explode Wen u experience such, PRAY!!!

Jamiebones@Jamiescript

I suffered from this for a long period of time before accidentally finding out on Quora about it. Now I can predict it’s occurrence which is usually triggered if I don’t get enough sleep. Thanks Doc.

#DoubtlessThouArtMyFather (Isaiah 63:16)

Nonso! Nonso!! Nonso!!! How many times did I call you? This is NOT fair. You have NO RIGHT to spread truth like this na! Do you have any idea how many pastors you have just removed food from their mouth with this thread? They will come for you after service today…

10,000 People@Dah_Frame

Oga hold your thread, I’m not buying Blood of Jesus so allow me to use it for free. Sleep paralysis is more than this things you’re explaining here. That was how I felt my own paralysis 8 times half way to sleep until I prayed then I slept well. Blood of Jesus is Real!

DEIC CONCEPTS@designwizzy

I stress myself more, I task my brain more, I sleep much less and no sleep paralysis. Your information is good but most spiritual attacks are associated with physical medical conditions. While some are verifiable some are not. Stay properly guided and well informed.

sir_muel@OloraSamuel

Remembered after the first time I read about sleep paralysis… The following Sunday service, the pastor asked us pray about not being able to move after waking up(sleep paralysis) we disturb God too much in this part of the world… This intelligence wasn’t given for nothing.

Exquis Haven NG.@labisiyeyeblog
I guess you don’t know much about spiritual warfare. Science is really trying as much as possible to make the super-natural been made natural, trying to erase the existence of God. Kindly refer to Romans 1 vs 24 – 32. Remain blessed.

Morenike (Mo_senteur)@Olori_Renike

So you mean I was dragged to MFM deliverance ground, did 3 days fasting for sleep paralysis? You mean it wasn’t spiritual husband trying to cuddle me? Obara Jesus!!

Mercy Nwaokoro@NwaokoroMercy

Please do not be deceived sleep paralysis can not be explained away by science nor solved by it. Only continuous study and strong faith in the word of God can deliver you from this. Selah

valar morghulis@lordcrucifix

Has happened to me just once in my life and I had malaria then, I was dreaming that I was being chased by the Cheshire Cat in Alice in wonderland and he was biting my toes, I woke up and still saw it on my toes…at least I think I did but I couldn’t move

The responses shows a lot of persons have had sleep paralysis before and ascribe everything to spiritual attacks.
