Hope brightens for cancer treatment as Science makes advances in Radiotherapy. A new way to plan radiotherapy could help shape treatment away from sensitive organs near tumours to reduce side-effects, a new study shows. The technique has been developed by physicists at the Institute of Cancer Research and they used complex mathematical formulae to spare sensitive organs from radiation damage. Although radiotherapy cures many cancers, side-effects can occur months or years after treatment and can significantly affect a patients quality of life. Radiotherapy treatment attempts to deliver as high a dose of radiation as possible to tumours to kill cancer cells while sparing healthy tissues. Doctors plan treatment carefully to achieve this based on patient scans, irradiating an area around a tumour to make sure it is hit by the radiation beam. Changing the shape of targeted therapy For diseases like prostate cancer, nearby organs such as the bowel and rectum are particularly sensitive to radiation, so designing radiotherapy treatment margins that avoid them while still treating the whole tumour could lead to fewer side-effects and better treatment overall. The new technique, details of which are published in the journal: “Physics in Medicine and Biology”, uses a concept called ‘adaptive margins’, which factors in nearby organs when planning the shape of radiotherapy treatment. For the study, each beam of radiation was mapped to measure the cummulative exposure of tissue around tumours, before accounting for the position of sensitive organs nearby to adjust the margins used in treatment. ICR researchers tested their system using data from five patients with prostate cancer, producing radiotherapy plans adjusted for the position of bladder and the rectum. They found their plans delivered doses of radiation to tumours while also exposing these organs to less radiation than plans where no adjustments were made. Increasing patient safety Study leader Professor Uwe Oelfke, Head of the Joint Department of Physics at the ICR and the Royal Marsden, said: ” Radiotherapy is a very effective treatment for cancer, but the damaging effect of radiation on the healthy tissue can lead to challenging side-effects that can affect a patient’s quality of life. Treatment margins are necessary to ensure the whole tumour is targeted, but a safe reduction of these margins is key to further improving outcomes for patients.” https://nimedhealth.com.ng/2019/02/19/physicists-develop-technique-to-minimize-side-effects-of-radiotherapy/ |
Hope for HIV cure brightens. The Russian Central Research Institute of Epidemiology has developed a new gene therapy medicine for people living with HIV, head of the federal health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor, Anna Popova, said on Wednesday. “The Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor created a fundamentally new drug for gene therapy, gene prophylactic treatment and molecular vaccination against HIV. “A highly active antiviral drug called Dinavir, which will soon be clinically tested, has been created,” Popova said on the sidelines of an international conference on HIV and AIDS in Moscow. The official noted that Russia was facing a number a number of problems related to treatment of HIV and AIDS, including high prices for treatment and lack of proper medications. This is very much similar to the problems posed by HIV treatment in Nigeria. Millions of people have been infected with HIV since it was first discovered in early 1980s, prompting the development of drugs that would help tackle the deadly virus. This is goodnews to Nigeria where it is estimated that every 5 out of 100 persons (5%) has HIV/AIDS. The number of people living with HIV vary from 1 to 12 in every 100 persons in the various states of the the country. In 2004, an estimated 3.2 to 3.8 million Nigerians have been infected by HIV making Nigeria the third highest prevalence rate worldwide; next to South Africa and India. Though the rate of daily infection of HIV has dropped significantly due to efforts of the federal government, civil society organizations, multinational organisations, private individuals, among others; people living with the disease in Nigeria are desperately looking for “HIV cure”. In my opinion, this is a landmark project. Radiotherapy machines are just too few in Nigeria. We need more. Kudos to the president. |

This is a very very commendable move by the federal government. We need more of this across the country to make access to cancer treatment easy |

Staphylococcus can't ruin your life. The picture of your lab result showed you have sepsis (blood infection). And you can't have sepsis for that long and still be alive neither will you be able to type or visit nairaland. Staph is present in our skin and nose and the environment. That lab result is doubtful. Staph is not a diagnosis. Beware. Please see a specialist doctor. Be guided. Check my signature analysis of diseases |
