The guest speaker is a well known scholar of Igbo extraction, Professor Anya O. Anya.

GOVERNOR OKOROCHA DIDN’T DESTROY SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH AKWAKUMA

-  PLEADS WITH IMO PEOPLE TO VISIT THE CHURCH

                         

In line with the pledge to always toe the line of truth on issues concerning the government in the State which Governor Rochas Okorocha Superintends, it has become important to politely deny the allegation by the LEADERNewspaper owned by the Owerri Catholic Archdiocese in its last Sunday’s edition that the governor had made good his threat by demolishing parts of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Akwakuma Owerri.

First and foremost, the governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha has never, either in writing or orally, directly or indirectly threatened to demolish any Church or any other property including the Catholic Church at Akwakuma as wrongly claimed byTHE LEADER Newspaper.

We also make bold to state that in the large premises of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Akwakuma, there are two outstanding buildings, the Church building under renovation and the School building, and none of the two structures were touched in the expansion work going on, on Akwakuma/Amakaohia road.

It was only part of the store built very close to the main road that was touched by the contractor handling the expansion exercise on the Akwakuma/Amakohia road.

Now that the Leader Newspaper had made its claim and the government or indeed the governor has denied the allegation by the newspaper, it is therefore advisable at this point to plead with Imo people to visit the Church in question to know between the two claimants who said the truth.

The THE LEADER Newspaper had in the report under reference avoided telling their audience that the Church in question used the store building to totally block the government owned Primary School sharing boundary with the Church, and the School has more than one thousand pupils.

The challenge now is for THE LEADER Newspaper to publish the destroyed part of the Church to support their claim because they failed to properly caption the photograph they published with the story to show that it was part of the store building almost at the main road, that was touched.

At this stage, we want to also repeat the appeal we have been making toTHE LEADER NEWSPAPER and the Catholic Church in Owerri not to be acting and talking as if they are at war with the State Government.

The government appreciates and recognizes the mega contributions of the Catholic Church to the progress and development of the State especially in the areas of education, human development and spiritual life of our people and would remain loyal to the authorities of the Church and those of other Churches in the State to the glory of God.

The expansion of some of the major roads in Owerri and environs is in the overall benefit of the State and her people which the Church is part and parcel of. We shall continue to appeal for understanding.

GOVERNOR ROCHAS OKOROCHA ORDERS FOR THE PAYMENT OF APRIL, MAY & JUNE SALARIES

 

This is to inform Imo people and indeed, all the Personnel in the State workforce in particular that the governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha has directed that the salaries for the months of April, May and June be paid before Friday next week, (July 8, 2016), and also gave a marching order to the Directors of Accounts in the Ministries, Local Governments and so on, to meet with the Accountant-General of the State immediately to workout the salaries of workers upto the month of June.

 

The governor had given the directive at a meeting that lasted for several hours and ended very late on Friday July 1, 2016 at the Government House with the government functionaries, Directors of Accounts, Treasurers, Permanent Secretaries, leaders of Imo Council of Elders and T/C Chairmen and other relevant bodies present at the meeting.

 

The governor also warned that this period should be the last time salaries would be owed in the State and assured that henceforth, salaries of workers in the State would be paid as at when due as it was the case before now. To avoid confusion and delay in the payment of salaries for the mentioned months, the governor also directed that they could be paid within intervals of one or two days.

 

A committee to monitor the prompt payment of salaries in the State was also set up and the committee would be meeting with the Directors of Accounts and Accountant-General on the 10th of every month to work on salaries and ensure prompt payment.

 

The governor equally explained that the 70 and 30 percent revenue sharing formular between labour and government in the State does not mean that workers would get only seventy percent of salaries at the end of each month.

 

His Excellency said the workers could even get more than their salaries depending on what the seventy percent labour gets would give them at the end of each month and could at times get their exact salaries or otherwise, also depending on what the seventy percent would give to labour.

 

He said it would be wrong to use the seventy percent agreement to peg the monthly salaries of workers at seventy percent because the labour’s seventy percent could give the workers either one hundred percent or eighty percent or seventy percent or less percent of their individual salaries depending on what labour gets each month.

 

In paying the three months salary arrears, the governor warned that anybody found playing pranks will be punished accordingly, and reiterated that nobody in the State workforce should be owed.

 

The governor also directed that no government appointee including Commissioners, Transition Committee Chairmen and so on, should issue authorization letter or give permission to anybody or agency or company for the collection of revenue. And cautioned that anybody that goes contrary to this directive will be fired.

 

He therefore cancelled any previous agreement anybody or group or company must have had with the government for the collection of Revenue.

 

The governor also informed that arrangements have been made to clear pensions owed before the agreement on revenue sharing formular between government and labour, while the technical committee handling the agreement would take care of pensions from the month of February when the agreement came into force.

 

His Excellency once again appealed to Imo people to always know that all his actions and inactions are in the best interest of the State and her people. And concluded that history and posterity will be fair to him because he meant well for the State.

CAPTAIN IHEANACHO AND GOVERNOR OKOROCHA CANNOT ENGAGE IN WAR



The Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha has read with concern the media reports credited to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship candidate in the 2015 election in the state and a business man of note, Captain Emmanuel Iheanacho in which he launched undue attacks on his person.



Captain Iheanacho had claimed in the reports that his reason for the media attacks on the governor was because of the purported plan of the government to demolish his house along Orlu/Amakohia Road. And he arrived at that conclusion because he saw demolition inscription, which reads, “Remove” on the fence of his house.



In our response, we want to reiterate that the Governor, Owelle Okorocha has vowed to build a state we all can be proud of. He has also pledged to make Owerri, the state capital a model city especially when the state capital is now adjudged one of the fastest growing cities in the country. That has been the reason behind some of the construction works going on along some major roads in Owerri including MCC/Uratta road, MCC/IMSU road, Orlu/Amakohia road, Mbari road and the relocation of some markets.



And in the course of doing all these, certain structures including block outfits have been touched or removed. And their owners have always exhibited high level of understanding because they know that the governor meant well, abinitio. The whole exercise was never targeted at any particular individual.



In other words, if the fence or building of Captain Iheanacho has been affected by the construction or rehabilitation works going on along Orlu/Amakohia road or somewhere else, it would invariably enjoy the same fate others have had. It is not a personal thing as to warrant his launching media attacks on the governor. He should have even been expected to commend the governor for the good job considering the enviable level of his exposure.



Threatening fire and brimstone should not have been the best approach especially when one recalls that he had aspired to govern the state for progress.



It may also be important at this point to appeal to Captain Iheanacho to stop giving the impression that he has some scores to settle with Governor Okorocha when we are not aware of any of such scores. They are all illustrious sons of the state and should be working together for the good of the state and her people.



In the current matter, the time and resources he employed to call Press Conference and unleashed attacks on the governor, he would have used such to find out why the inscription “Remove” was there. Whether it is for the fence or the building and also find out what the government can do in the circumstance.



As a matter of fact, his approach had fallen short of expectation. He is a highly respected son of the state who also meant well for the state and her people. Therefore his approach to issues concerning the governor and the state should be that of patriotism. And not that of attacks, threat for war or that of rage.

GOVERNOR ROCHAS OKOROCHA IS NOT CARRYING OUT DEMOLITION PROGRAMME

 

On Wednesday June 29, 2016 the officers of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Owerri branch, appeared on a programme of one of the Radio Stations in the state on a topic the organizers called“demolition programme” in the state and the learned gentlemen gave the impression that the governor or the government has been pulling down buildings along the roads where expansion or construction works are going on at the moment.

At this point, it is very important to let Imo people know that the governor has not embarked on any programme called demolition.

Rather, in his desire to make the state capital a befitting city we all can be proud of, the governor decided to expand some of the major roads in Owerri. And a venture of that nature cannot be christened“demolition programme”.

And at the moment, the roads affected are MCC/Uratta road, Orlu/Amakohia road, Mbari Street and Imo State University road. In the course of this expansion works there is no doubt that some structures would obviously be touched.

Meanwhile, structures mostly affected for now are fences, kiosks and shanties, built very close to the roads. No major building has been demolished along MCC/Uratta road, Orlu/Amakohia road, IMSU road and Mbari Street.

We challenge the NBA leaders to publish the demolished buildings they had talked about on the programme with their addresses for Imo people to see them. Let them publish the list of the buildings, their locations or addresses.

However, if in the course of the expansion works going on, on the mentioned roads and any building needs to be touched, the necessary action will be taken. And with the nature of works going on, any building affected at the end of the day, would have some explanations to be made about it by the owner because there are specifications for building houses along a major road.

The NBA leaders specifically mentioned the Lamonde Guest House along Orlu/Amakohia road. The guest house is located several poles off the main road that, even if it is made twelve lanes, it won’t touch it.

It is very disturbing that the NBA officers could not even mention one advantage inherent in the expansion works on these roads. What the governor is doing is in the overall interest of Imo people. It is not a personal thing. And it is not meant to hurt anybody.

The governor once again appeals for understanding on the part of those whose structures have been touched. They should not allow those who do not see anything good in whatever the government is doing to give them the wrong impression about the whole exercise.
