The Gambia’s president Yahya Jammeh has rejected the outcome of last week’s election , which he lost to opposition leader Adama Barrow, and called for a fresh vote.
The announcement made on state TV on Friday throws the future of the West African country into doubt after an unexpected election result that ended Jammeh’s 22-year rule and was widely seen as a moment of democratic hope.
“After a thorough investigation, I have decided to reject the outcome of the recent election. I lament serious and unacceptable abnormalities which have reportedly transpired during the electoral process,” Jammeh said.
“I recommend fresh and transparent elections which will be officiated by a god-fearing and independent electoral commission,” he said.
Human rights groups have accused Jammeh’s government of detaining, torturing and killing his opponents during his rule.
His defiant announcement came after the chair of the country’s new ruling coalition said Jammeh would be prosecuted for his crimes within a year of handing over the reins of government in January.
Soldiers were seen placing sandbags in strategic locations across the capital Banjul, a development that triggered widespread unease among the already-spooked population, who had been panic-buying food before the vote due to fear of unrest.
As the military deployed onto the streets of the tiny nation, the US embassy in Banjul urged the army to continue to show “respect for the rule of law and the outcome of the presidential election.”
“The Gambian people have made a clear choice for change and a new start,” the embassy added.
Opposition spokeswoman Isatou Touray criticised on social media a “violation of democracy” and called for people to “remain calm, lucid, vigilant and not retreat.”
Babatunde Olugboji, deputy programme director at New York-based Human Rights Watch, responded to Jammeh’s U-turn on Friday.
“We are deeply concerned by reports of belated objections to the Gambian election results raised by President Jammeh,” he said.
“The international community, notably Ecowas [the Economic Community of West African States] and the African Union, should loudly protest against any unlawful attempt to subvert the will of the Gambian people.”
He also reiterated analysis his group had issued immediately after the election defeat: “Given the Jammeh government’s past record of intimidating and targeting perceived opponents, the transition period also carries risks.
“It is essential that during the political transition Gambian security forces continue to show respect for human rights and the rule of law.”
Jammeh’s defeat sparked wild celebrations last week. But some people also said at the time that they doubted he would accept he had been beaten.
Official election results from the electoral commission gave Barrow, a property developer who once worked as a security guard at retailer Argos in London, 45.5% of the vote against Jammeh’s 36.7%.
Barrow is set to take over in late January following a transition period, but Jammeh is likely to make strenuous efforts to ensure that does not happen.

Reports reaching Naij.com says the Rivers state government house has been shut down by police officers purportedly acting on the orders of the Inspector General of police.
According to pictures made available to our reporter, several armed police men were seen outside the Rivers state government house just as another picture shows a police armored personnel carrier ramming into a Rivers state government vehicle, a Toyota Hilux.

Senate president Bukola Saraki and Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami held a no holds bar meeting over Saraki and Ekweremadu’s forgery charges.
This was disclosed by a reliable source to NAIJ.com. The details of the meeting which was sketchy on Tuesday, July 12 has been revealed by SaharaReporters on Wednesday, July 13.
It was earlier reported that Senate had insisted the AGF must appear before it over alleged forgery of the Senate standing rules or risk arrest.
Information just filtering in reveals what actually happened during the tense meeting.
According to SaharaReporters, it gathered that Saraki begged the AGF. It also learnt that the Senate President was in a pensive mood during the private meeting with Abubakar Malami.
Saraki was reported to have pleaded with the AGF to drop the forgery charges against him and his deputy Ike Ekweremadu.
The private meeting took place at the premises of the Senate when Malami, together with Ita Enang, President Muhammadu Buhari’s special assistant on the National Assembly got to the venue of the meeting to Senator David Umaru, head of the Senate committee on the judiciary.
Malami was said to have assured Senator Umaru of his willingness to honour an invitation by the senatorial committee.
A source at the Senate and another in the AGF’s office told SaharaReporters that Saraki requested to see Malami after the AGF’s meeting with Senator Umaru.
It was learnt from the source that Malami agreed to the meeting with Saraki as well as to see Saraki in the presence of Ita Enang.
A few minutes to the commencement of the meeting, the Senate president and AGF agreed that it should be private.
It was gathered that the embattled Saraki, who is facing two trials, one for alleged falsification in his asset declarations, the other for alleged forgery of Senate rules, turned the short meeting into a begging session. One source who was briefed on what transpired told our correspondent that Saraki pleaded with the attorney general not be part of those persecuting him, swearing that he knew nothing about the alleged forgery of Senate rules under which he was elected as Senate President.
One of our sources claimed that Malami spoke sympathetically, but declined to make a commitment to stop the prosecution of Saraki and Ekweremadu.
Following the AGF’s non-committal stance, a Senator told SaharaReporters that Malami was likely to face hostile questioning when he is answers the summons of the Senate Judiciary committee. Mr. Malami is expected to appear before the committee at 11 a.m on Wednesday, July 13.
A source disclosed that the members of the committee were divided over the summons to Malami.
“Some members feel that the invitation to Malami to appear is solely intended to bully him so as to force him to withdraw charges against Dr. Saraki and Senator Ekweremadu.”
One committee member argued that the summons itself violates the constitution and Senate rules which forbid senatorial intervention in matters that are before the courts. He cited Section 174 of the 1999 Nigerian constitution, which empowers the AGF to initiate legal proceedings against anybody according to the discretion vested in his office. The senator also remarked that Section 150 of the constitution shows that the office of the Attorney General of the Federation is one of the few offices created by the constitution.
The resolution followed a report by chairman of the Committee on Judiciary, David Umaru, who informed lawmakers that presidential aide, Ita Enang, had appealed for more time for Malami to appear before the Senate to explain his role on the matter.
This meeting comes as the senators were said to have been involved in a rowdy session over the forgery allegations leveled against the Senate president.
Senator Dino Melaye had also threatened to ‘impregnate’ Remi Tinubu, wife of the Bola Tinubu, the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
His anger stems from the proposed trial of the Senate leadership over forgery, a case for which Senate president, his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, and other officers were recently charged to court.
