It was gathered that the drivers who blocked the roads did so in protest against Anambra State Government’s imposition of taxes and levies on their members and other vehicles that bring goods into the state.

According to the protesting drivers, the state government had imposed a levy of N30,000 for trailers loading and offloading goods in the state, while other vehicles have their own amount ranging from N20,000 to N25,000.

Speaking on behalf of others, one of the drivers, Odion Omoroge said he was shocked when he heard about the levy, coupled with the manner at which some revenue agents of the government do their job as though they are all rebranded touts.

The President no matter what he wants to do and the National Assembly says no, he will not be able to do it, it is the National Assembly that will bring about checks and balances.

Nigeria as presently constituted needs a very strong and virile National Assembly that is very conscious of impact in the lives of the people, so when government is not living up to expectation, the parliament should intervene.

So, we need very strong representation from the South East, not just Anambra Central, that is why when I was in the parliament, my eyes were everywhere, looking at the activities of government, and how they impacted on the people of the South East, either through neglect or marginalization.

The goods were destroyed following the destruction of a grocery shop along the Oby Okoli Avenue of the UNIZIK Temporary Site, Okpuno Awka.



The ever-busy shop, which is situated among other shops and close to a mini market, was a one-stop shop for egg, flour, frozen foods, condiments, rice, beans, hot dog, noodles, and others in the entire Awka, both at retail and wholesale prices.

These goods, however, were all scattered on the street of Awka, as the ACTDA officials stormed the shop with caterpillar to pull down the building on Monday evening. Ejimakor made the call in a letter addressed to the Head of the European Union Delegation to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Ambassador Samuela Isopi over the issues surrounding the arrest and detention of the Mazi Kanu by the Government of Nigeria which also refused to release him after an Appeal Court judgment discharged him on October 13.

Recall that Kanu, who has been in custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021, is being prosecuted on 15-count charges bordering on treasonable felony and terrorism. Eight of the 15-count charges were stuck out on April 8, 2022; while Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja quashed the remaining seven counts last month, and discharged Kanu. The Nigerian government has, however, refused to obey the court judgement that acquitted Kanu.

According to Ejimakor, the Nigerian government did not only refuse to release Kanu, but also denies him independent medical attention in the custody since June 2021 he was arrested and returned to Nigeria from Kenya.

He explained that Kanu a medical evaluation done in March shows that Kanu has Hypokalemia (low serum potassium) and is also suffering from concentric left ventricular hypertrophy with tricuspid valve regurgitation (Heart valve).
