The truth behind d whole thing is this, the school of residence those non-consultant doctors attend was until d inception this strike sponsored by the FG and the reverse is the case in sm oda contries; USA and India, to mention bt two. I encountered a health worker yesterday nd he tld me everything. FG sponsors dem and still pays dem salaries bt now dt they've embarked on strike, FG has decided to withdraw her sponsorship and suspend their wages. This triggered d NMA chairman to promise d suspension of d industrial action to avert d disaster dt is to befall dem; they cn't cope without FG's sponsorship. This is why consultants (who are already through with their medical postgraduate programme) are not in any way concerned. |

The Federal Government of Nigeria has denied ordering the sack of striking members of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), saying they have only been placed on suspension, contrary to reports. Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, stated this while beriefing State House correspondents in Abuja, on Wednesday, noting that the change in vocabulary from suspension to sack was capable of sending out the message. Chukwu said the programme was suspended because the alloted time within which the resident doctors were supposed to acquire the needed skills was being wasted, hence government's decison to re-appraise it. He, however, warned that the suspension of the doctors may last for months, until a committee to be set up by government submitted its report on what next to be done.
