The Argentine forward has decided to hang up his boots after a serious health scare, bringing to an end his illustrious 18-year career

Barcelona and Argentina star Sergio Aguero has announced his retirement due to a heart condition.

Aguero moved to Camp Nou on a free transfer in the summer following his departure from Manchester City, having spent the previous 10 years of his career at Etihad Stadium.

A calf injury saw the 33-year-old miss the start of the season at Barca, and he only ended up making five appearances for the club before a serious health scare ruled him out of action indefinitely.

Aguero overcome with tears as he confirms retirement from football

Aguero confirmed his heartbreaking decision to hang up his boots rather than taking the risk to continue playing in an official press conference at Camp Nou.

"This conference is to announce I have decided to stop playing professional football," he said. "It is a very difficult moment. The decision I have taken is for my health [and relates to] the problem I had a month-and-a-half ago. I have been in good hands with the medical staff.

"I made the decision 10 days ago after doing everything possible to have some hope of playing on. I am very proud of my career. I always dreamed of a professional career since the first time I touched a ball at five.

"I want to thank Atletico Madrid who took a chance on me when I was 18 and Manchester City, everyone knows how I feel about City and how well they treated me there.

"I will leave with my head held high. I don't know what awaits me in the next part of my life. But I know I have people who love me. I will always remember the amazing things."

"I want to tell everyone that I did everything possible."

On Wednesday, Aguero took to social media to post an emotional open letter detailing his decision to step away from the game.

"Life goes on, and there's plenty of it ahead," part of Aguero's statement read. "It will be a new stage, a different one indeed, but I'll keep on just like I've done so far: always positive, with enthusiasm and joy."

Aguero was initially admitted to hospital after suffering from chest pains during Barcelona's 1-1 draw with Alaves in November.

The Argentine, who began his career at Independiente before joining Atletico in 2006, underwent a series of tests before doctors determined an irregular heartbeat to be the root cause of his discomfort.

Had Aguero continued playing, he would have been at risk of a life-threatening episode such as the one suffered by Denmark international Christian Eriksen during Euro 2020.

The attention of the leadership of the RCCG has been drawn to reports of the death of one Mr. Michael Arowosaiye said to have committed suicide in Abuja on Tuesday May 14, 2019.

The report which has been trending on the social media and has also featured in the newspapers, said the man decided to take his own life after going into depression.

While the RCCG leadership sympathises with the family of the deceased, it has become necessary to clarify the mis-information and absolute falsehood in the report.

The said Mr. Michael Arowosaiye was not a minister in the RCCG. He was a singer and a keyboardist in one of our Youth Parishes in Abuja until 2017 when he left for another ministry.

His movement to another ministry notwithstanding, Michael, through his elder brother who is presently one of the coordinators of the RCCG Youth Choir, continued to get invitation to minister in RCCG programmes.

He had accommodation problem in 2018 and though he was no longer in the RCCG, a family in the Mission gave him the Boy’s Quarters of their house in Sunnyvale Estate in Lokogoma FCT, which was where he lived till the unfortunate suicide incident.

It is therefore untrue to refer to him as a Minister in the RCCG. It is also misleading and absolutely incorrect to create the impression that RCCG does not care for its Members and Ministers. The RCCG is in the forefront among organizations with robust welfare package in Nigeria.

The Nigeria goalkeeper was reported to have submitted an invalid medical certificate before making his debut in the Cypriot top-flight

Francis Uzoho has been handed a one-game ban and a fine of €1,000 while his club Anorthosis Famagusta face a nine-point deduction after the Cyprus Football Association found the goalkeeper ineligible to have featured in a league game earlier this month.

Uzoho joined the Cypriot outfit from Deportivo La Coruna on the transfer deadline day and went ahead to make his debut in the First Division against Apollon on February 2.

After the game ended 1-0 in favour of Anorthosis with the 20-year-old recording a clean sheet, Apollon lodged a complaint to the country's football governing body over the validity of the health certificate issued to the Nigeria international.

Apollon questioned the time the goalkeeper received his health certificate prior to his debut having arrived in Cyprus two hours after the country's Sports Organisation closed for the week on February 1.

Following the investigation carried, the Cyprus Football Association upheld Apollon's appeal and have punished Anorthosis for fielding an ineligible Uzoho.

"The COP announces the decision of the Athletic Judge Aristotle Vryonidis regarding the appeal of Apollon for his fight with Anorthosis for the 19th round of the Cyta Championship," the CFA announced.

"The Athletic Judge decided to accept Apollo's appeal, awarding the above match with a score of 3-0 in favour. Anorthosis also requires an extra 6 points from the first phase of the Cyta Championship.

"Footballer Francis Uzoho was sentenced to a match ban and a fine."

The points deduction will move fifth-placed Anorthosis to the bottom half of the table that will see them fight against relegation with five other clubs in the bottom six.

But the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium outfit have disclosed that they will appeal the decision and will demand a shift in their final game of the season against Ermis which has been scheduled for this Saturday.

"The Board of Directors of Anorthosis Famagusta (Football) Public Limited has already instructed our legal representatives to proceed with appeals against the first instance decision of the Athletic Judge," the club statement read.

"At the same time, in view of the tight time frames for the completion of the first phase of the championship, Anorthosis will ask for its post in the Cup, for the preservation of the credibility of a seriously shaken championship
