Politics / Minister Warns Internet Stakeholders To Prepare Against Attacks by uniquealdehyde(m): 7:21am On May 20, 2017
Internet stakeholders in the country must brace up for possible cyber attacks in the country, Communications Minister Adebayo Shittu warned yesterday.

Everyone is vulnerable to cyber criminals, the minister told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) against the backdrop of the recent cyber attacks in many parts of the world.

He stressed the need for Nigerians to be prepared for such attacks, so that when they occur, the damage to data would be minimal.

He said the JAMB site was attacked about two, three weeks ago, adding “it is a thing of joy that the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) under this ministry rose to the occasion”.

The minister said the attack on the JAMB was an indication that the Nigerian government was at alert and equipped to forestall attacks like this.

He said: ”Attacks will come against banks and other financial institutions, airlines, hospitals and what have you.

”It behooves on all agencies, companies, establishments to prepare ahead.

”The banking sector, for instance, must also take precautions by employing experts in cyber defence to protect their data.’’

The minister said collaboration is key to combating any attack in the Nigerian cyber space since even highly industrialized nations like the United States are not immune to these attacks.

He said that ICT is a private sector-driven industry, adding that government’s constitutional role is to create an enabling environment where businesses could flourish.

”Part of the intervention of the Federal Government is the fact that a Cyber Security Act has been passed by the National Assembly and the office of the National Security Adviser is championing the fight against cyber crimes.

”These are initiatives that we have on ground to assure you that the Nigerian government has not been sleeping in regard to possible cyber criminality in Nigeria,’’ he said
Foreign Affairs / House Representative Officially Requests The Impeachment Of Donald Trump! by uniquealdehyde(m): 7:50pm On May 17, 2017
Donald Trump has been quite the "active" president so far — from destroying our healthcare to replacing the White House swamp with an oil refinery.

But after POTUS fired FBI Director James Comey, the man investigating his ties to Russia, then spilled top secret U.S. intelligence to Russian officials — well, that took the cake (the most beautiful piece you've ever seen) for some very upset congressionals.

Now, it looks like Trump's presidency might reach its climax prematurely (LOL) in light of his recent actions, as a House Representative has called for his impeachment!

On Wednesday morning, Rep. Al Green became the first member of Congress to officially request impeaching the Big Giant Peach.

The Democratic Rep. of Texas said it was the House's "duty" to take up impeachment, telling the House floor:

"This is about my position. This is about what I believe. And this is where I stand. I will not be moved. The President must be impeached. For those who do not know, impeachment does not mean that the President would be found guilty. It simply means that the House of Representatives will bring charges against the President. It's similar to an indictment but not quite the same thing."
Yes! Let's get this reality show on the road — and out of the Oval Office!

The request comes after news broke of Trump asking Comey to drop an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn back in February, a shady act that critics have called obstruction of justice.

While Green's statement marks the first official request, Democratic lawmakers have been calling for impeachment over the past few months, like California Rep. Maxine Waters.

No Republicans have publicly voiced support for impeaching the President yet — so we'll see if this request gets the majority of support it needs from the House of Representatives to go forward.

Politics / Fayemi’s Two Years As Minister, A Waste To Ekiti — Fayose by uniquealdehyde(m): 3:16am On May 17, 2017
…As APC slams gov for immortalising Adebayo with Fayemi’s legacy

Ado Ekiti—Governor Ayodele Fayose has challenged his predecessor in office, Dr Kayode Fayemi to tell Ekiti people what he has done with his position as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the last one and half years.

Fayose said his predecessor, as the Minister of Mines and Steal Development was holding the ministerial position in trust for the people of the state, querying that Fayemi had allegedly failed to use the position to influence Ekiti positively.

Fayose wondered why Fayemi, who has been busy touring sites of minerals deposit in other states has refused to help tap the huge mineral potentials of the state.

He also dropped a bomb shell that critical stakeholders loyal to Alhaji Ahmed Makarfi’s group in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will defect to another party, if Senator Ali Modu Sheriff wins the appeal pending at the Supreme Court.

The Governor said these, yesterday, while interfacing with youths between ages 18 and 22 at the government’s house ground in Ado Ekiti.

Meanwhile, the APC has reacted to the decision by Fayose to rename Ekiti government house on Oke Ayoba Hills, Ado-Ekiti, after the late Military Governor of the old Western Region and elderstatesman, the late Major-General Adeyinka Adebayo, who died recently in Lagos.

Fayose on Monday renamed the edifice and the General Hospital in Iyin-Ekiti, Adebayo’s country home, after the late nationalist, who will be buried this weekend in Iyin-Ekiti.

Reacting to the governor’s decision in a statement in Ado-Ekiti by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, APC said Fayose’s decision was in right direction and confirmation that the administration of Fayemi that built the structure thought well in giving Ekiti State a legacy that towers above other monuments in the state.

Education / Nigeria’s SIWES On The Decline by uniquealdehyde(m): 3:05am On May 17, 2017
The Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) – a skill acquisition programme designed to expose and prepare students of universities, polytechnics, monotechnics, as well as colleges of education for the industrial work situation they are likely to encounter after graduation – has been on the decline for decades now that it is liable to go into extinction in no distant time if drastic measures are not taken towards addressing the lingering anomaly.

SIWES was initiated to be a planned and supervised training programme based on specific learning and career objectives, and geared toward developing the occupational competencies of the participants. It is generic, cutting across over 60 programmes in the universities, over 40 in the polytechnics/ monotechnics, and about 10 in the colleges of education.

Hence, it is not meant for a particular course of study or discipline. Since inception, it is being reckoned to be an innovative phenomenon in human resources development in Nigeria. While some institutions and disciplines permit SIWES’ duration for only three to six months, others go for up to one year.

The programme, which permits the affected students to seek for Industrial Training (IT) or Teaching Practice (TP), as the case may be, in any establishment of their choice, has ab initio been a cause of concern to education and economic planners, particularly with respect to graduate employment and impact on the general societal development.

There are equally mixed feelings concerning how much of it that is actually helpful to students’ academic performance and job readiness after graduation. Whatever positive impact the SIWES has thus far created on the students’ wellbeing and the society at large, the truth is that the primary purpose for which the programme was established has recently been relegated to the background.

The prevalence of the inability of SIWES’ participants to secure employment after the pragramme, or even perform adequately if eventually employed, casts doubt on the continuing relevance of the programme to the contemporary industrial development drive in the Nigerian society. This obvious lapse isn’t unconnected with negligence and/or apathy on the part of the trainees, trainers, concerned institutions, and the government. It’s noteworthy that most of these students dodge the programme.

They prefer indulging in activities that would fetch them money to going for the technical knowledge.

To this set of individuals, partaking in the industrial programme is simply a waste of time and energy. In view of this misconception, when the programme is meant to take place, you would see them participating in all sorts of inconsequential menial jobs, or even gambling and what have you, just for the aim of raising some cash. This growing mentality of placing money before knowledge has contributed immensely in endangering the prospect of the laudable programme.

Those who bring out time to participate in the programme, are prone to one challenge or the other. It’s worth noting that greater percentage of the trainees is not paid by the establishments in which they are serving, not even stipend. Hence, they would end up making use of their personal funds to service their transportation and accommodation fees.

It’s more worrisome to realise that most of these trainees are overused by the firms; rather than teaching them the needful, the supposed trainers would engage them in unnecessary activities, thereby making them lose interest in the training.

Worse still, most of the concernment institutions don’t create time to supervise the students in their respective places of assignment. Ridiculously, in most cases, the schools would remain ignorant of where the students are undergoing the training till the duration of the programme is over.

This very loophole has over the years served as an advantage to those who never participated in the programme. In this case, during the SIWES defence, the affected student would claim to have undergone the training in any establishment of his/her choice, and the supposed supervisor would never bother to ascertain the truth. Inter alia, funding of the SIWES hasn’t been encouraging in recent times.

The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) – a body responsible in the day-to-day funding of the programme – currently appears incapacitated, perhaps owing to lack of adequate allocation from the government and other financiers. Sometimes, the students would be deprived of the statutory allowance they are entitled to after the programme. Those whom were lucky to receive theirs had to wait for a long time.

The SIWES is obviously yearning for resuscitation. The present state of moribund experienced by the scheme can only be properly addressed by revisiting the Acts that bind the programme.

Such step would enable every authority involved to start seeing the initiative as a priority towards the anticipated economic diversification.

The said Act should categorically specify what is expected of the trainee, trainer, school, as well as the government as regards the sustenance of the scheme. Similarly, there’s need for a relevant law enforcement agency that would penalize or prosecute any defaulter. It’s indeed high time we revived this technical-oriented initiative whose motive truly means well for nation building.

This can only be actualised by changing all the flat tyres that have succeeded in crippling the journey.

Think about it!

Foreign Affairs / Trump Threatens To Cancel Briefings; Spicer Back At Podium by uniquealdehyde(m): 2:04am On May 13, 2017
NEW YORK (AP) - President Donald Trump threatened to shut down daily press briefings Friday as he sought to defend his White House from criticism of its shifting explanations and misstatements about the firing of FBI Director James Comey.

Trump's statements, through a tweet and later television interview, threaten a Washington institution that is the most high-profile forum for journalists to question the government about policy and the news of the day.

In the Trump era, it has become a cable TV hit and cultural touchstone. Press Secretary Sean Spicer, who was back behind the podium Friday after Sarah Huckabee Sanders subbed for him for two days, has been the subject of memorable lampoons by comic Melissa McCarthy on "Saturday Night Live."

Spicer was back to answering questions Friday about Comey's firing. The White House first said this week that Trump made the move because of a negative memo about Comey from the Justice Department, only to have the president later say he made the decision before seeing the memo. Conflicting stories were the topic of much media discussion.

That led Trump to tweet Friday morning, "As a very active President with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with perfect accuracy."

He added, "Maybe the best thing to do would be to cancel all future 'press briefings' and hand out written responses for the sake of accuracy"

In an interview with Fox News Channel's Jeannine Pirro set to air Saturday, Trump suggested eliminating the daily briefings and instead having one every two weeks - conducted by him.

"First of all, you have a level of hostility that's incredible and it's very unfair," he said. He said Spicer is a nice man "but he gets beat up." Trump would not directly answer questions about whether Spicer, who was out two days because of Naval Reserve duty, would remain in his job.

Like many administrations, the relationship between Trump and the press has been tense. Starting with Spicer's claim that the media inaccurately portrayed the size of Trump's inauguration audience, there have been questions about whether the administration is knowingly providing inaccurate information.

There was some talk as Trump took office that his administration would do things differently and cut back on press access. But Spicer and his team have kept up regular briefings. The president, a devoted viewer of coverage about himself, has given several interviews, most recently to NBC News' Lester Holt on Thursday, although he has favored Fox News' friendlier venue.

White House briefings and news conferences provide both "substantive and symbolic opportunities" for journalists to question to government officials, said Jeff Mason, White House correspondent for Reuters and president of the White House Correspondents Association.

"That exercise, conducted in full view of our republic's citizens, is clearly in line with the spirit of the First Amendment," Mason said. "Doing away with the briefings would reduce accountability, transparency and the opportunity for Americans to see that, in the U.S. system, no political figure is above being questioned."

Spicer said Trump's "robust schedule" means that "sometimes we don't get an opportunity go get in to see him and get his full thinking. We work very hard to get you the most accurate and up-to-date information every day."

In the Fox interview, Trump seemed to herald his own work ethic.

"Here's the thing, the difference between me and another president," Trump said. "Another president, I won't use names, but another president doesn't doing what I'm doing. They really don't. I'm not saying that in a bragging way."

"I know," Pirro said.

"I'm not saying it any way," Trump said. "Another president, Jeannine, will sit in the Oval Office and do practically nothing all day

Sports / Barcelona, Real Madrid Take La Liga Race To Final Day by uniquealdehyde(m): 1:55am On May 13, 2017
As Tottenham, Man U battle for EPL Top Four

The race for the title of different leagues in Europe has indeed entered its feverish stage with few games to end the season.

Once again, the two historic rivals in the La Liga – Barcelona and Real Madrid are fighting tooth and nail for the Spanish league title with Zinedine Zidane’s men currently holding the edge.

The two teams are set to go head to head in what has all the makings of a thrilling battle to be crowned champions of the La Liga.

They are locked on 84 points each at the top of the table but Madrid have the edge due to the game in hand they will play in between the final two weekends of the campaign.

There are also European spots and a relegation place to be decided over the next two weeks as 2016-17 season draws to a close.

Barcelona currently lead Real Madrid at the summit on the strength of their head-to-head record, but Madrid can make top spot their own by winning their game in hand. That comes away from home against Celta Vigo on Wednesday, May 17.

Barca go away to Las Palmas before hosting Eibar, while in addition to their Celta clash Madrid have a home match against Sevilla to navigate before concluding their campaign at Malaga.

No doubt, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have all qualified for next season’s Champions League, while Sevilla need one more point to ensure they join them over Villarrea.

The team that finishes in fourth will have to play a two-legged play-off round tie to reach the group stage.

Villarreal currently occupy the first of two Europa League places, but Athletic Club and Real Sociedad are just a point behind them. Athletic are currently hanging on to the second spot as they have the head-to-head edge over Sociedad.

There is a good chance, however, that all three will find themselves in Europe. If Barcelona beat Alaves in the Copa del Rey final, the Europa League place awarded to the winner of that competition will slide to the seventh-place team in La Liga.

Celta Vigo could also qualify for the Champions League by winning the Europa League. As they are not going to qualify for Europe domestically and Spain would have eight teams in continental competition next season.

Osasuna and Granada have been relegated and Sporting Gijon are also in deep trouble.

Sporting can catch both Deportivo and Leganes, but will need to win both of their remaining matches to have any chance of surviving. Either of the three clubs can ensure their safety by picking up one more point, with Deportivo staying ahead of Sporting even if they both finished with 33 points due to their head-to-head record.

In the English Premier League (EPL), Tottenham HotSpur will host Manchester United tomorrow in a crucial battle for the top four.

The hosts have already locked up their ticket for next year’s UEFA Champions League, but Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City are still hoping to beat Manchester United in the race.

The Baggies have a reputation for defensive resilience, especially against the top clubs, but they have lost four of their last five matches and should not threaten the title celebrations in their current form.

Liverpool is in the same boat, and the third-placed club visit West Ham, who all but ended Spurs’ title hopes in their last match. The Reds have won just one of their last three matches and need to turn things around in a hurry.

Fourth-placed Manchester City have also won just one of their last three, while sixth-placed Arsenal have improved slightly after a poor run.

The Citizens won’t have it easy at home against a resurgent Leicester City side, which have little left to play for sitting in ninth place. On paper, Arsenal will have the easiest outing in Week 37, with a visit to 13th-placed Stoke City.

In the race against relegation, there will be a huge fixture on Sunday, as 16th-placed Crystal Palace can secure their Premier League spot for next season at home against third-bottom placed Hull City. Fourth-bottom Swansea City visit bottom side Sunderland a day earlier, and with the Black Cats beating Hull in their last outing, the Welsh side won’t take their opponents lightly.

A win in South London for the Tigers could set up a very exciting final day in the Premier League, but if Hull lose and Swansea win, the relegation battle would be over.

Politics / Should President Buhari Resign? by uniquealdehyde(m): 7:23am On May 07, 2017
written by Taye Salaudeen, 25 for punchng.com
A few months ago , President Muhammadu Buhari travelled to London to receive medical care . He was away for a long time and his prolonged absence gave rise to speculation about his health . He was even rumoured to have passed on . It took the concerted efforts of his media aides and some top government officials to debunk the rumour . President Buhari returned to the country not long after the panic was quelled and he resumed in his legal capacity .
Until last Friday when he joined other Muslim faithful to observe Juma ’ at prayers, inside a mosque located inside the Presidential Villa , Buhari had not been seen in public . His absence at Federal Executive Council meetings has been a source of worry .
Even though his aides have come out to admit that Buhari is sick , they have refused to tell Nigerians the nature of his illness. Besides , they are doing everything possible to prevent the media and Nigerians from uncovering the nature of the ailment Buhari is suffering from .
Every now and then , they give assurances that he is getting better , but there are no pointers to what they are telling us and want us to believe . If indeed Buhari is getting better , they should stop hiding him or preventing him from attending state functions . He was elected by the masses and we have the right to ask to see our president .
We want to be able to determine if he is still capable of ruling this country. If his health is not good enough , I would advice that he resigns so that a more capable person can lead this country. We cannot afford a sick president at this time in our nation’ s history because the consequences will be dire.
Already, some people feel that a cabal has taken over the presidency and it is this same cabal that is hiding Buhari for their own selfish interests . The way things are going now , I pray we do not have a repeat of what happened to the late former President Yar ’ Adua .
Even though the wife of the President , Aisha Buhari has come out to reassure Nigerians , we will not be reassured until we see Buhari . If he decides to resign , he will have more time to attend to his health and source for the best medical care anywhere in the world . Besides , he will be free from the burden of governance
Politics / Buhari Is Enemy Of Igbo People,– Nnamdi Kanu’s Father by uniquealdehyde(m): 12:26am On May 07, 2017
Father to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, HRM (Eze) Israel Okwu Kanu, has declared President Muhammadu Buhari as an enemy of Igbo people because he (Buhari) allegedly harbours hatred against people of the South East.
The monarch made the declaration while reacting to a question on how he will regard the President now that Kanu has been released with regards to Buhari’s initial disposition to the agitator.
Speaking with The Sun, the traditional ruler said, “I wouldn’t say enemy of the family, but that of the Igbo race because I have never seen this type of hatred of a people before. Court will rule to set a person free and the president who is supposed to be the father of all will say no, making a mockery of the judiciary in the process.”
On withdrawing the charges leveled against the Director of Radio Biafra, he said, “Why not, did they get any gun or knife from Nnamdi? It was his mouth he used in talking and since we have freedom of speech in the country, I don’t think he has committed any crime that will warrant him being tried in court.
“It was because they have nothing substantial against him that they are trying to bring masked men as witnesses against him, God forbid. I am appealing to the Federal Government to set Nnamdi free by withdrawing all the charges, because he has not come to kill anybody.”
