Crime / Lekki Robbery Suspect Sues Police For N1m by UnknownSource: 4:27pm On Jul 16, 2015 |
One of the four suspects paraded by the police in connection with the March 12, 2015 robbery of the Lekki branch of First City Monument Bank, Ebi Tosan, has sued the police, seeking damages in the sum of N1m. The twenty-year-old, who was arrested on April 5, 2015, claimed that it was unlawful for the police to continue to keep him in detention without admitting him to bail. Tosan, who was paraded by the police along with three others – Duke Odogbo, 38; Lawrence Kingsley, 31; and Ekelemo Kuete, 30 – is therefore seeking a court order directing the police to immediately release him on bail. The suspect’s lawyer, Chief S.W. Baidi, argued that his client’s continued detention without bail was an “infringement and curtailment of the applicant’s constitutional right to personal liberty, freedom of movement and presumption of innocence.” He is seeking a declaration that his arrest, torture and continued detention by the State Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja, without bail, was a violation of his human rights, preserved by sections 34(1)(a), 35(1)(4) and Section 41 of the 1999 constitution. In a 26-paragraph affidavit filed in support of the originating summons, one Tamuno Amos, who addressed himself as the suspect’s uncle, said he believed that his nephew’s continued detention by the police was a deliberate act by the police to “extract a confessional statement from him on the alleged offence.” Amos, who said he had not been allowed to see his nephew since his arrest, claimed that “the applicant is suffering on daily basis without access to food, bath and other conveniences and he may die in custody unless granted bail.” The suspect had, on July 9, secured an order of Justice Lateefa Okunnu of a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, directing the police to produce him in court on July 16. On Thursday, however, when the matter came up, the police did not bring the suspect to court and his originating summons slated for hearing could not be heard. Okunnu, while adjourning hearing of the application till October 22, however ordered that the Lagos State Attorney General should be joined as a respondent. She added that if there was any urgency, the applicant could appear before October 22 before another judge who will be sitting during the court’s annual vacation, which begins next week. The original respondents in the suit are the Lagos State Commissioner of Police and the Officer-in-Charge of SARS, Ikeja, SP Abba Kyari. In the said robbery on Admiralty Way, Lekki, Lagos, a gang of armed robbers, which Tosan and others allegedly belonged to, reportedly stormed FCMB in the afternoon of March 12, wearing military uniform and engaged the police in a gun battle before carting away about N15m from the bank. About five persons, including three policemen and a fish hawker, were reportedly killed http://www.punchng.com/news/lekki-robbery-suspect-sues-police-for-n1m/while several others sustained injuries during the non-stop shooting said to have lasted about 30 minutes. |

Politics / Jonathan: We’ve Done Things We Shouldn’t Have Done by UnknownSource: 7:05am On May 18, 2015 |
Outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan has asked for forgiveness from Nigerians hurt directly or indirectly by his actions during his tenure as Vice- President, acting President and President. He explained to worshippers at a farewell service organised in his honour at the Aso Villa Chapel in Abuja on Sunday, that those actions were not deliberately done. Jonathan pointed out that there were times one would take a decision in the best interest of all but friends and associates might not understand why. The President said, “Nothing is perfect; if you wait for perfection, you cannot achieve anything. No system is perfect. Every human system has an element of imperfection. “So, for the eight years that I have been here as Vice-President, acting President and President, I can say that no one is perfect. “We have done certain things that probably we shouldn’t have done, but we didn’t do them deliberately. “So, for those that we offended, it was not deliberate; it was as a result of the exigencies of the office. “We plead that such people should forgive us; I think we have done our best. You may do your own best and your friends and associates may misunderstand you.” Jonathan thanked God and those who stood by him and his family in the last eight years, saying he had every reason to be thankful. While admitting that public office holders have different roles, the President said no head of government, be it at the national or sub- regional levels, could do everything. He however said it was normal for office holders to set and achieve targets so that their tenure would be remembered. Jonathan recalled that when he was the governor of Bayelsa State, his target was to construct two bridges in the state annually. But he said that that dream was cut short when he was nominated as the vice presidential candidate of the then Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate, Umaru Yar’Adua (late). The President said although he was leaving as President and his wife as the First Lady, they would not leave members of the Aso Rock Chapel who were relentless in praying for them. Jonathan added, “I believe some of you may even come closer and even do more meaningful things together when we leave office. “The office is quite challenging; some of you may desire to see us but I believe that as we move forward, things will get better. “I don’t believe that it is only in government that one can do things; outside it (government), you can do a lot. “The richest people in the world don’t even serve in government. (Aliko) Dangote has never been in government, yet he is doing so much. “Bill Gates too has never been in government, yet he is the richest man in the world. So outside government, a lot of things happen; It is for us to be committed and be focused. Joyful atmosphere pervaded the chapel during the service which was the last time Jonathan and his family would be worshipping there (chapel) before May 29. There will not be service at the chapel on May 24 because of an interdenominational service to commemorate the nation’s Democracy Day at the National Christian Centre, Abuja. Colourfully-dressed chapel members, friends and associates of Jonathan and his family as well as top government officials turned out en masse to wish them well. The chapel committee and the children presented gifts to Jonathan, his wife, Patience, and his mother, Eunice. The President later led his family members to dance at the altar for a special thanksgiving to express gratitude to God for being with them in the last five years. The President’s Chaplain, Ven. Obioma Onwuzurumba, in a short message titled, “To God be the Glory” thanked God for keeping the Jonathan family safe throughout their stay in the Presidential Villa. Mrs. Jonathan read the first lesson of the service from Numbers 6:22-27 while the Executive Secretary, Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission, John Kennedy-Okpara, read the second lesson from 2 Chorinthians 13:11-14. The service featured special presentation by the children, presentation by the chapel committee and special prayers for the nation. A five-year-old girl, Juliet Ishola of the children church, stole the show with a memory verse taken from 1 Timothy 6: 6-7. She got a standing ovation from the congregation when after reading the verse, she turned to Jonathan and said, “For emphasis, I will take verse 7 of I Timothy chapter 6 again which says “For we brought nothing into this world and it is certain we will not take anything away.” Juliet went on to tell the President, “You seem to understand this verse more than all of us by your reaction to the results of the 2015 presidential election. “God bless you sir for allowing peace to reign in the country.” Osinbajo fails to take over chapel However, the expectation that Jonathan would formally hand over the chapel to the Vice President-elect, Yemi Osinbajo, on Sunday did not materialise. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo was said to have handed over the worship centre to Jonathan as the Vice President since the then President-elect(Yar’Adua) was a Muslim. The same process would have taken place on Sunday but for Osinbajo’s absence. Onwuzurumba later confirmed to State House correspondents that the handover process was part of the programme packaged for the day. He said it could not be done because the President-elect did not attend the service in person. “We actually invited the President-elect for the handing over of the chapel but for one reason or the other, he was absent. “But he was represented in the service by a regional pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God. The handover will be done later.” Pastor Emmanuel Ibitaye from the RCCG was one of the guests recognised during the service but he was not introduced as Osinbajo’s representative. Among the prominent persons who attended the service were Peter Obi, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, members of the National Assembly, members of the Federal Executive Council as well as heads of government agencies and parastatals. http://www.punchng.com/news/jonathan-weve-done-things-we-shouldnt-have-done/ |

Politics / APC Leaders Fail To Agree On Buhari’s Running Mate by UnknownSource: 6:21am On Dec 16, 2014 |
A marathon meeting by the leaders of the All Progressives Congress ended in the early hours of Tuesday(today) without a consensus on the running mate for the party’s presidential candidate, Maj.Gen. Muhammadu Buhari. Unlike the national convention/ primary which produced Buhari on Thursday without much rancour, the meeting which started at about 10.30pm on Monday and ended at about 1.58am on Tuesday was said to have been characterised by intense horse-trading. Different caucuses of the APC had started a series of meetings which culminated in a larger one that had all the party’s governors and leaders in attendance. The National leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, did not attend the enlarged caucus meeting. Before the enlarged meeting which held at the Rivers State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, rose, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha had left. They did not return as of 12. 50am when Buhari and some other participants, including seven governors, started filing out of the lodge. Although the reason for their action could not be ascertained, The PUNCH learnt that the National Working Committee of the party would ratify one of the shortlisted vice-presidential aspirants on Tuesday. The aspirants being considered are Governors Rotimi Amaechi(Rivers), Babatunde Fashola(Lagos), Adams Oshiomhole(Edo) and a former Lagos State Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo. Others whose names came up were former governors Dr. Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti State), former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola (Osun State) and former governor Adeniyi Adebayo (Ekiti State) A seven-member committee headed by Chief Tony Momoh was set up to prune down the number of aspirants. It has representatives from each zone of the country. They include Chief Bisi Akande (South-West), Senator Chris Ngige (South-East), Senator Danjuma Goje (North-East), Chief Audu Ogbe (North-Central), Chief Sam Jaja (South-South) and Governor Yari Abubakar (North-West). The enlarged meeting will reconvene by 12pm today. The caucus arrived at two major decisions which included the rejection of Muslim-Muslim ticket. It was gathered that Abubakar, Okorocha, Kwankwaso and Nda-Isiah would lend their voices to the choice of the vice-presidential candidate. This would be followed up by input from Buhari. One of the governors, who attended the meeting said, “We are still meeting. It is not as easy as you see it. We are still meeting.” Another leader of the party also confirmed the stalemate, saying “We have not picked anybody yet.” He explained that the NWC which would meet on Tuesday(today) was expected to “ratify whoever is picked if there’s a stalemate tonight(Monday). “ Earlier on Monday, another top ranking member of the APC privy to the meeting said, “The meeting is going on now to draw up the general principles of (the) choice. “It has been agreed that no Muslim/ Muslim ticket. The choice is also not restricted to the South-West; any zone in the South could produce our candidate’s running mate.” The APC chieftain said the governors and Tinubu, were engaged in serious calculations about the viability of aspirants being proposed. The meeting had in attendance, the party’s National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun; the National Secretary, Mai Malabuni; ex-Minister of the FCT, Nasir el-Rufai as well as Governors Rauf Aregbesola (Osun), Oshiomhole (Edo) and Yari. Others were Governors Babatunde Fashiola (Lagos), Magatakarda Wamakko (Sokoto), Ibrahim Geidam (Yobe), Kashim Shettima (Borno), Senators Bukar Abba Ibrahim, Atiku Bagudu, Chris Ngige and Ahmed Sani. Also in attendance were the party’s national publicity secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed and a former presidential aspirant, Sam Nda- Isaiah. Abubakar and Okorocha left the meeting midway and were yet to return as at the time of the time participants starting filing out of the lodge. When contacted, Mohammed said, “We are still consulting.” http://www.punchng.com/news/apc-leaders-fail-to-agree-on-buharis-running-mate/ |
