Pandemonium broke out in Abule Egba, Lagos in the wee hours of this morning after Customs officers reportedly killed a suspected rice smuggler and ran away. According to multiple online reports, the officers chased the man after he attempted to smuggle rice into the country using a yellow public bus. He was shot following the chase and this led to chaos, with irate youths protesting the killing. In photos shared online, blood can be seen splattered on bags of rice and on the body of the bus used to transport the bags of rice into the country. According to the area assistant Chief Mary Mulwa, Munyao was seen pulling the two goats from a bush where the animals had been tied on Saturday, January 13. The two goats were said to have taken their last breath after Munyao was done with them. . The accused was charged and bailed for sh100, 000 after he pleaded not guilty to the accusation. Seventy-three Nigerians were buried in Benue on the 11th of January 2018 – a day some in the state will regard forever in infamy.  It was a mass burial of persons killed in the most brutal ways, but there was the dignity of proper coffins and the accompaniment of sincerely grieving bereaved relatives. These were Nigerians killed under the watch of a Federal Government that had to know such a carnage was in the making. In their death, as in life, there was the clear aversion by the authorities to be identified with them. Amidst the many teary eyes, none was of any person from the Buhari government as an official representative. Nobody came from Aso Rock to commiserate directly with these people whose hope in government has been crushed to the size of fine sands. Instead, Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s president, was, at the time when the funeral was ongoing, sending congratulations to the winner of his 2017 Season’s Greeting Card design competition. Empathy should have required a Federal Government presence at Benue, but Buhari is not disposed to tinkering with that reputation of his as an aloof, insensitive and unfeeling old soldier. He had found it expedient and unavoidable to dash to Kaduna for the commissioning of the Inland port, plus extra locomotives for the Abuja-Kaduna rail line. But there was no need or urgency to make an extra 200-mile journey to get a firsthand view of the tragedy that had just happened in Benue. Nigeria’s chief security officer simply retreated behind the high walls of his comfortable palatial residence, leaving the talking and defending to his media lieutenants. President Buhari is betraying his duty to the people of Benue to be their succour in grief. That may not be explicit in the oath of office but a Commander-in-chief who pledged to “belong to everybody” at his inauguration but consciously becomes unavailable to certain people in their time of crisis must have his sincerity and commitment to his responsibility questioned. Were it not for a sudden realisation of the sheer callousness of it, the president had it in his schedule to dance and wave disorderly brooms in Abia, while Benue people drowned in their vale of tears. Former President Goodluck Jonathan was judged guilty in the court of public opinion for his dance moves after the Nyanya bombings on April 14, 2014, but that bowler-hat Ijawman had actually visited Nyanya the evening of the day of the attacks. Buhari, on the contrary, remained in Abuja, as the Benue Governor, Samuel Ortom, had to come to him as though he were some monument of pilgrimage, while his media team tweeted about rice production and the president’s love for humanity. Where is that softer side now? Where is that general whose nature is to lead from the battleground? Where is that moral powerhouse and embodiment of compassion? The president’s entire reaction to the traumatic events of the last 12 days has only provided further evidence to an already popular and widely believed theory about Mr Buhari’s outlook towards persons outside his ethnic stock. This cold disposition towards the calamity in the Middle Belt cannot be blamed on age or the wear of a Military career. Nigeria is led by a six-foot-plus man whose sixth sense is tailored primarily to the benefit of those for whom Daura is a rallying point. Eventually, that will give these Benue killings the political connotation Vice President Osinbajo naively thinks it should not be given. The president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a Fulani man, abandoned Nigerians of other tribes who were killed by his tribesmen. It is political and it will have costs and consequences. Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose says president Buhari is a selfish unrepentant ethnic champion.  In a statement signed by his spokesman, Lere Olayinka, Fayose blasted President Buhari for failing to pick the new director-general National Intelligence Agency (NIA) from Ekiti state following the sacking of Ayo Oke , former head of the intelligence agency on October 30, 2017. He described the appointment of Ahmed Rufai Abubakar as the NIA Director General as a violation of federal character enshrined in our constitution. He wondered if there was no qualified person from the South to head the agency, and concluded that Buhari has successfully turn Nigeria into an ethnic colony “Seeing what President Buhari has turned the country to, the forefathers of Nigeria, who laid the foundation of the country on equity, justice and fairness will be lamenting wherever they are now “President Buhari has consistently demonstrated that he is an ethnic champion, a religious bigot and the number one promoter of disunity in Nigeria. This he has done again with the appointment of yet another northerner as the NIA director-general. “Ambassador Ayo Oke was removed from office the same day Babachir Lawal was removed as secretary to the government of the federation. “While Lawal’s replacement came from his home state, Oke’s replacement came from the north. That is unacceptable. “With the appointment of Ahmed Rufai Abubakar as the NIA Director General, all heads of security agencies are now northerners and the question is, is this what those who enshrined federal character in our constitution envisaged? “The implication of what the president has done is that, when security council meeting is held today, apart from one or two insignificant people, those in the meeting will be people from one section of the country. “Even para-military agencies are headed by people from President Buhari’s section of the country. The Old Oyo Empire was one of the strongest if not the strongest in the Yoruba mythology. Oyo-Ile as it was called then (not the modern day Oyo) has a lot of stories surrounding it, being the choosen place for many of the Yoruba gods and warriors, likewise kings and people of great reputation. This brings us to the story surrounding Bashorun Gaa and his reign as the Prime Minister of the Old Oyo Empire. Bashorun Gaa was an integral part of the Old Oyo Empire’s royal politics. No story of Oyo-Ile would be complete without a mention of his name. Bashorun Gaa was instrumental to the military conquests during his time as a Prime Minister of the Old Oyo Empire during the 17th/18th century. During the 17th century Oyo Kingdom, the monarchical failings came with a succession of uncharitable kings to the exalted throne. From Odarawu who was bad tempered, to Kanran, an unmitigated tyrant, then Jayin, the effeminate and dissolute, down to Ayibi, the cruel and arbitrary, and Osinyago, the worthless, the Alaafin’s in the second half of the 17th century were despotic. Odarawu was the Alaafin of Oyo after Alaafin Ajagbo, and his reign was short because he was considered a man of bad temperament. According to Oyo legend his bad temper led him to being removed as king and also served as educational warning and lesson to future kings on character development. He was asked to commit suicide after his last blunder on the throne — he ordered the destruction of a town called Ojo-segi for the trite reason of being disrespected in the market by a trader in Ojo-segi. He was followed by others who were as terrible as he was. Bashorun Gaa being the head of the Oyo Mesi (the Oyo council of Kingmakers) became too powerful during that period supervising and executing the death of four Alaafins in quick succession. He was said to be so powerful he could turn to any animal at will. He was Bashorun from 1750–1774 and was believed to have grown up during the reign of the 9 Alaafins. They were terrible kings and this could have affected his view of the office. The unwritten Constitution which gave Bashorun (prime minster) a final say on the nomination of the new Alaafin and the control of the kingmakers was so great that the Bashorun ’s power rivaled that of the Alaafin himself. This of course was an open opportunity for Bashorun Gaa to have absolute control of the political machinery of old Oyo kingdom of his time in his palms. Power drunk, Bashorun Gaa became a classical tyrant during the Yoruba pre-colonial era breaking the support he had among the people against tyrant kings. The one who fights the tyrants became a feared tyrant himself. Bashorun Gaa, unconstitutionally hijacked all the political power and machinery of Oyo kingdom. All the homage, respects and the material benefits meant for the kings were diverted to his personality. This was a great crime against the royal political system and great assault to the gods of the land and the past ancestors. He was also said to have been a crime instigator. He was fond of aiding, abetting and covering the crimes committed by the people of his household. The history recorded the serial killings committed by his sons and head slave. The criminals were protected by him and even punished those who reported the crime. The Bashorun ordered the massacre of the family members of one of his wives who was alleged to have attempted to poison him. He was however poisoned by the last Alaafin he killed, Alaafin Majeogbe. The poison left him weak, paralyzed and vulnerable. Bashorun Gaa’s end was believed to have came during the reign of Alaafin Abiodun who ruled from 1774–1789. As much as I want to believe Alaafin Abiodun’s plot against Bashorun Gaa was so he could have a peaceful and tyrant free reign, I think a more solid reason is because Gaa murdered his only daughter, Agbonyin. While a version of the story states that Bashorun Gaa killed the girl for a ritual, another version states that Gaa needed a deer and when he couldn’t get any, he ordered his men to kill Alaafin Abiodun’s daughter, Agbonyin (who was forcefully married to him) because she had a similar name. The furious and heartbroken Alaafin Abiodun met clandestinely with the Onikoyi and the then Are-Ona-Kakanfo, Oyabi from Ajaseland, on how to send Gaa to his grave and Alaafin Abiodun and his co-plotters succeeded in extinguishing the fear Bashorun Gaa had instilled in the people of Oyo-Ile. In 1774, hundreds of angry people of Oyo-Ile were said to have stormed Gaa’s compound and killed all members of his household. Only his eldest son, Ojo Agubambaru had survived the attack and fled to a faraway land called Bariba in this version of the story. Another version stated that his children fled Oyo for places like Egbado (Yewa), Badagry, Cotonou in Dahomey, all main locations where their father had contacts and that Ojo Agubambaru later came back to Oyo Ile to take the throne but was betrayed. Bashorun Gaa himself was dragged out and tied tied to a stake at Akesan market and Alaafin Abiodun ordered that every citizen cut a pound of flesh from his body and drop it in a huge fire in front of him. He was made to smell the odour of his own flesh, his nose was not allowed to be cut and flesh from the left part of his chest was excluded too (to prevent him from dying quickly). The remains of his body were later burnt in fire to prevent his re-incarnation. The public execution of this man eventually brought up a popular saying in Yoruba land to warn those in power and the rulers who are tyrants. The saying goes thus: “Bi o laya ko seka, sugbon bi o ba ranti iku Gaa ki o so oto”. This is translated as — “If you are brave, venture into wickedness, but if you remembered Gaa’s death, adhere to the truth”. It must be noted that the death of the all-powerful Bashorun Gaa affected the Old Oyo Empire in some ways. Firstly, it decreased the military and political strength of the Empire; this was due to the destabilization of the Oyomesi after Gaa’s death; the Oyomesi were supposed to act as a check to the Alaafin but instead became his puppet, and left him with absolute authority to rule the Empire. Secondly, the political unrest the old Oyo Empire witnessed after Gaa’s death made some kingdoms under her auspices (like Dahomey) declare their independence. All these were undoubtedly among the factors that led to the subsequent fall of the old Oyo Empire in 1836/1837 Bashorun Gaa’s end was believed to have came during the reign of Alaafin Abiodun who ruled from 1774–1789).  The Ministry of Petroleum Resources has denied reports that there are plans to increase the pump price of petrol. In a statement released by the ministry's Director of Press, Idang Alibi, he said the report making the rounds on social media is false. Read the statement below "Our attention has been drawn to publications making rounds on traditional & social media alleging that the HMSPR Dr. Ibe Kachikwu dropped a hint of an impending fuel price increase during the Joint Senate and House of Representatives Committee hearing on fuel scarcity in Nigeria.. The Ministry of Petroleum Resources would like to categorically state that the Honorable Minister of State, Petroleum Resources all through his presentations at the hearing, neither mentioned nor insinuated the need or plans by the FG to increase the current pump price of PMS. It would be expedient to note that that the Presidency has set up a special committee to identify the immediate and remote causes of the fuel scarcity with a view to finding both immediate and long lasting solutions to the challenge. The Committee has been in rounds of deliberations in the past few days and these discussions are still ongoing. The final decisions and recommendations from the Committee would be passed on to the President and Commander-In-Chief for approval. The general public and indeed stakeholders in the Oil and Gas sector are by this statement urged to disregard any such report of a price increase. One of such is as reported by The Nation news. Further information and communiqué on the resolutions would be communicated as and when due.
