UNICEF has initiated a radio education programme in the Lake Chad basin as part of efforts to support the 1 .3 million children displaced by the activities of Boko Haram.
Marie -Pierre Poirier, UNICEF’ s Regional Director for West and Central Africa said, “This crisis has unique challenges , so we are developing unique solutions.
“ With many hundreds of schools still closed , and children exposed to numerous risks , we developed a radio education regional prototype that will keep children in a positive education routine.
“ This is the first step, and the Governments have pro -actively engaged to make this available for children in this crisis. ”
The 144 episodes of educational programming on literacy and numeracy , lifesaving and other child protection messages will be broadcast in French and three local languages, namely : Kanuri, Fulfulde and Hausa.
The radio education programmes offer an alternative platform for the 200, 000 children in crisis affected areas who are unable to access schools in the Far North of Cameroon and in the Diffa region of Niger .
Education has been at the centre of the conflict since it began in 2009 , UNICEF said adding Boko Haram has sought to ban education and has targeted teachers and schools in attacks.
The EU -supported Education in Emergencies initiative has equipped UNICEF to enhance a protective environment for children in schools and communities affected by the crisis .
This has included expanding education programs to areas where schools remain closed either because they have been destroyed or because of fear of further attacks, UNICEF noted .
The UN agency added that the radio programmes have the potential to reach children in areas that remain inaccessible for humanitarian assistance and other out -of -school children.
With support from the EU , UNICEF and the Governments of Cameroon and Niger have developed a radio education program for children impacted by the conflict, UNICEF said.
“ The broadcasts are supported by community outreach efforts to ensure adults allow children to listen to existing radios and facilitate guided listening. UNICEF and the Governments are engaging radio listening groups in communities to help children get the most out of the broadcasts.
Yvan Hildebrand , Head, EU Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid (ECHO ) in Cameroon , said “ radio education helps us reach the children who are out of school as a result of the conflict.
“ We’ ve worked with UNICEF to develop a high-quality interim solution that will help hundreds of thousands of children engage in an educational routine .
“ We are very proud of the positive role the EU is playing in this crisis and I am sure that all Europeans can see the value of this investment in children” .
Beyond radio programming, Education in Emergencies will reach 159, 000 children with a range of support including child protection services and risk informed learning programmes adapted for the needs of children living in crisis affected areas in Niger , Chad , Cameroon and Nigeria.
“ This radio platform has the potential for even larger numbers of out -of -school children in Niger , Cameroon and in the region.
“ Being on air with a program ‘validated ’ by the Government is the first important step for the continuation of learning in emergencies and the protection of children who are not in school .
“ In the very near future, we hope that children who learn by radio will also receive a certification and pass the school year,” Poirier said.
In spite of the achievements of this project , the needs of children in the Lake Chad basin remain dire while ongoing conflict and security concerns have hampered the humanitarian response.
UNICEF has called for 38.5 million dollars to meet the education needs of children in the crisis and this appeal has received 19. 6 million dollars, just 50 per cent of the amount required.

That’s because I studied water Engineering for five years and I graduated with a good result Many of my mates that we left school together are doing very well now, and sometimes, I feel bad that I’m not praticing the profession I devoted a lot of time and effort to study. If I was a praticing engineer, I’m that I would have gone very far by now. On the flip side though, I enjoy what am doing and I have never pictured myself doing a 9-5 job. Making music comes naturally to me and it makes me happy. So I have no regrets”

Suspected armed robbers have a hijacked petrol tanker and hacked the driver of the truck to death .
Our correspondent gathered that the hoodlums hijacked the tanker on Friday around Asejire town , along Ibadan- Ile Ife Road , and drove the truck with the driver and his assistant to a place off the expressway .
The hoodlums were said to have tied the hands of the unidentified driver, beat him up and cut him with machetes until he died .
A motorist was said to have seen the hoodlums while taking the drivers and the truck away and he alerted the state command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps .
The driver was , however, said to have been killed before operatives of the NSCDC got to the place.
Their arrival was said to have prevented the hoodlums from killing the assistant driver.
The Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC in Osun State, Mr. Babawale Afolabi, confirmed the incident.
He said, “Armed robbers hijacked a petrol tanker with number plate, SHA 592 XA , Kwara, in the Asejire area.
“ The incident happened around 2.30 am. The driver had already been killed by the time our men got there .
“ Immediately the robbers saw our men , they took to their heels and the other man was rescued.
“ Investigation is ongoing on how to apprehend the robbers .
“ The Commissioner of Police in the state has been informed , while policemen have removed the dead body. ”

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested one Mrs. Bukola Ogun for allegedly faking her own kidnap with the aim of extorting money from her husband, and to also persuade the man, a citizen of America, to relocate her to the States.
The housewife was recently paraded alongside 12 other suspects for various crimes by the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abiodun Odude at the Police Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan.
According to the Police boss, the 37-year-old businesswoman was arrested with two men who she had conspired with, among whom was her cousin, Kayode Adepoju, who helped in orchestrating her own kidnap in order to fraudulently obtain money from her husband.
The commissioner told journalists that the incident happened at about 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4, when three armed hoodlums stormed the residence of the supposed victim and ?kidnapped? her to an unknown destination.
?Barely four hours later, the suspects contacted the victim?s husband, demanding for N10million as ransom as a condition for his wife?s release.
?Unknown to the husband that the kidnap was actually arranged by his wife, he reported the case to the police, and upon the receipt, operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) began a manhunt for the hoodlums.
?During an intensive investigation, two suspects were arrested, and they let the cat out of the bag, as operatives were stunned to discover that the victim was the architect of the fake kidnap.
?The woman, for the three days she was away, lodged in a hotel at Imalefalafia area, Ibadan, while efforts were on to rescue her, but after two of the suspects were eventually arrested in their criminal hideout at Imalefalafia area, they confessed to the crime and the mastermind was arrested,? the police boss said.
Confessing to the crime, she said she called her cousin, Kayode, informing him that she wanted her husband to relocate her to the United States, so wanted to stage her own kidnap so, after her rescue, her husband would be left with no option than to send her abroad.
?So I left home on Tuesday, July 4, and returned on Thursday, July 6, acting as if I was kidnapped. It was then that my husband started calling about that I had been kidnapped before finally informing the police.
?Everything is still like a child?s play; he is an American citizen and I just wanted him to relocate me to the US. I told the gang to demand for N10million from my husband; I knew he could not afford that kind of money, but just for the whole plan to look real.
?And within the three days I was away, I lodged myself in a hotel, but I regret everything now,? Mrs. Ogun, who had been married to her husband for six years with two children.
On his role in the whole case, Mrs. Ogun?s cousin, Kayode, said the woman just called her one day, informing him that she wanted to stage her own kidnap so that her husband would agree to relocate her to the United States since he is a citizen.
According to him, 'she told me to find one of my friends who has a car and we would come to her house in the evening of the day we wanted to stage the kidnap.'
?When we even got to her house, she was the one who walked out herself and entered the car we brought, and we took her to the hotel where she lodged for three days.'
?After that, we called her husband, asking for N10million ransom, just to make the whole plan look real, but we didn?t collect anything from him.'
?However, I was arrested the following day after she returned home; policemen came to my office to arrest me, and we had no option than to tell the police the truth,? Kayode said.
The suspects will be charged to Court pending on when investigations are done.

In 2012 , pop sensation , Davido, hit the limelight with his hit song, ‘ Dami Duro.’ With this song, he wormed his way into the hearts of the Nigerian music lovers . However, in the chorus of the song, he made a statement referring to the dance step of a certain ‘Baba Shina Rambo’ but not many people got the hint till Senator Ademola Adeleke won the bye -election to become the representative of the Osun- West senatorial district recently .
The senator , who is Davido ’s uncle , is the father of Nigerian singer, Sina Rambo. Shortly after his victory, the Nigerian internet space produced video footage of the senator giving some hot dance steps during his campaign and a ‘victory dance ’ when he won the election .
Yours truly , Saturday Beats, reached out to his son , Sina Rambo, who is currently in the United States about his father ’s dancing steps and he said his father has been dancing since the 80s .
He said, “When the spirit of the Lord comes upon my heart, I will dance like David danced. Ashamed ? I cannot be embarrassed with the way my father danced . Look, my father will not change for anything! He’ s been dancing since the 80s or why do you think they call him Jackson?”
The singer said that his father is probably the best dancer in their house ; he disclosed that even though he has tried to compete with him on several occasions , his father always won the dance competition .
“ Trust me at every family party , we dig it out but he ends up winning because he just never stops . Jackson ! Baddest , ” he said.
The singer was quick to add that even though his father is a fantastic dancer, he is also a man of wisdom .
“ But don’ t be misled; he is a man of extreme wisdom who knows how to conduct himself at all times . There is time to celebrate and there is time to work . I ’m sure he will definitely do a great job serving his country to the best of his ability,” Sina Rambo said.
The singer also took the opportunity to explain why he adopted the name Sina Rambo despite being linked with a notorious robber who terrorised Nigeria in the 80 . He said the name has not in any way affected his brand negatively .
“ Actually it started as a joke . Growing up in the 90s in Nigeria , there was a popular bandit bearing the name Shina Rambo. My name is Sina, so we joked about it a lot till the name stuck and when it was time to record my songs , I felt it just made sense because it caught people’s attention including Davido who loved it . Many people tried to tell me to change it but Davido insisted that I should not change the name .”

Indigenous rapper , Olamide Adedeji , popularly known as Baddo by his numerous fans has successfully built a reputable brand. Whether you are interested in hearing it or not , the rap artiste is always quick to note that he is the voice of the street to the extent that he even released a song titled , ‘ Voice of the street .’

So, it is only natural that the young man would want to lend his voice to calls for cessation of killings by the dreaded Badoo cult in Ikorodu area of Lagos State lest his brand name is negatively affected.

But when Saturday Beats reached out to the rap artiste’ s manager, Alexander Okeke, to know how the ‘Eni Duro’ singer felt about the development , he simply said that the rap artiste had no comment on the issue.

Further probed on the issue and how it could taint the reputation of the singer who is known to be the voice of the street , the manager kept insisting that the rap artiste had nothing to say.

When Saturday Beats tried reaching the singer directly via his telephone , it did not connect .
