Some of my input may be controversial but I think at least some bits will surely be helpful.

1. If your goal is to become a professional engineer (in Nigeria COREN, in the UK Chartered C.Eng, in the US P.Eng) my advice is to grab the UK spec online, link below

Review this document and understand the requirements for each tier of professional registration. I am sure this will be beneficial even if you are applying for COREN or P.Eng. with this you will know what you need to be doing to be eligible for what you want.

2. If you are able to take on a post graduate course in mechanical or another discipline relevant to your aspirations then do it now, while you're still fresh from the rigours of uni life. My advice here is if you are unable to do a master's degree in a better university then where you did your B.Eng, then don't do it yet. Wait!

3. Polish you soft skills. This advice is more for those who studied in Nigeria and have lived in Nigeria all their lives but would like to gain international exposure for career development. I have met many Nigeria kids where this has presented a bigger problem then their ability.

4. Basic knowledge of using CAD, understanding Primavera, advancee excel etc is helpful but not critical. What's more important is your adaptability and ability to learn quickly on the job. Understanding interrogating a database from novice level today to super user in a matter of days or many weeks depending on complexity. Now that's boss!

5. Finally, not everyone who graduates in Mech Eng will become an engineer. I reckon 70% will never have a role in mechanical. Some will go into project management, research, project planning, project controls, etc etc it's not a sign of failure. It's just the way it is. You could still do excellently well outside of being a professional mechanical engineer.
