Akan Udofia storms PDP convention


A frontline aspirant for the governorship seat in Akwa Ibom State, Mr Akan Udofia, caused a major stir at the PDP National Convention on Saturday, October 30, 2021, when he stormed the Eagle Square venue against some negative speculations to the contrary.

Prior to the billionaire’s significant entrance to the PDP Convention, there were also some wild doubts as to his membership of the party.

However, led by a retinue of supporters to the Akwa Ibom stand,
the strategic entrance the GMD of Decison Group of Companies took some Akwa Ibom delegates at the convention by surprise, with many rushing to exchange pleasantries with him.

Most of his supporters, dressed in black or white “Akan Udofia” T-shirts, sang and danced to herald the frontline contender. Most of the songs centered on the hitherto silent humanitarian efforts of the aspirant.

Aside from the “AKProsperity” umbrellas displayed by Udofia’s supporters, there were others used by the food vendors right from the entrance of the Eagle Square.

Udofia’s banners conspicuously displayed around the venue also proclaimed the expected prosperity to be ushered into Akwa Ibom by the international businessman.

Udofia, displaying his trade mark humility, went round paying homage to prominent politicians at the venue, including the state Governor.

At the VIP stand, where he eventually sat with Governor Udom Emmanuel, the two prominent sons of Akwa Ibom state were seen engaging in animated discussion, apparently centering on how to improve the social and economic fortunes of the state.

Addressing some Akwa Ibom people in Abuja later, Udofia promised to focus on tourism, human development and economic empowerment.

Udofia who grew his father’s company from a 15-member establishment to 4,700 global concern, said he has the pedigree to change the economic fortunes of Akwa Ibom state by bringing in his relevant foreign partners.

One of the leading contenders for the governorship seat in Akwa Ibom State, Mr Akan Udofia, has assured his teeming supporters of his plan to change the economic fortunes of the state, once given the opportunity.

Udofia told some critical PDP stakeholders from all the senatorial districts of the state that he recently signed partnership documents with some foreign companies in Dubai to established their factories soon in Akwa Ibom state.

The gathering had past national and state legislators led by some ex-speakers; former council chairmen and other functionaries; ward leaders; senior politicians, former aides to governors, women mobilizers, among others.

The international business mogul who brought them a message of hope, said if he could grow his father’s company, Desicon Engineering, from a 15-member concern to a global brand with 4,700 staff, he can also grow the economy of the state.

While stating that his focus will be on improving and strengthening the economy, Udofia stressed that he was out to contest to the very end, insisting that nobody can buy him out.

According to him, once the citizens have been rightly empowered, the society can take its rightful position as even insecurity will reduce to the minimum. He pledged to carry everyone along in his government, should he be given the chance.

Udofia commended Gov Udom Emmanuel on the strides taken so
far but promised to do the entire Akwa Ibom proud by improving on the governor’s foundation and initiating more laudable schemes.

Speakers at the event were blunt but assured Udofia of their support, in the confidence that by the recent legislative proposal of direct primaries, all of them may soon be delegates.

They were full of appreciation to the Senate, stating that the move towards returning powers to the people will seriously check imposition of mediocre on the polity.

Many of them praised Udofia for his hitherto quiet efforts at assisting subsequent governments in the state, championing various social services, including free medical outreaches, building of schools and hostels, churches and dishing out startups to some small business owners.

Welcome to August!

The eight month is consecrated and adjudged the power month, 'it augers in the energy of completion, where loose ends are tied, past healing perfected and the future beams with clarity for all'.

African myth and general spirituality suggests that how and when one starts a day,week or month connotes the traction or pace at which progress is perceived.

For Akwa Ibom our Completion sequence resonated with the crowning of our NPFL league championship with an overwhelming victory for our darling Akwa United.

Akwa United FC kick started the 2020/21 season with a lacklustre win here,loss there and a couple of draws before finding form with three 3goal wins etc,they stayed consistently focused suffering only four losses,fourteen draws whilst savoring nineteen wins. The Dakadda spirit nudged them into the consciousness of not just RISING but FINISHING WELL!

Right when it mattered most to "finish well" at a time where the expectations of enthusiasts centered on ensuring the State Government reaps from its immense investments in Sports steps in Mr Akan "Ginger" Udofia. At precisely an hour to the game he announces a N1million Gingerpack for every goal scored by Akwa United. The morale soared, the dakadda frenzy assumed euphoric dimensions. The media space and public commentary spiked in anticipation but alas the Greatness in Akwa United manifested. The goals kept coming up until the 90th minute. Even the visitors who had nothing much to contend for caught the motivation bug.

In the 37 games of the NPFL 2020/21 Akwa United experienced its largest goal harvest of the season. The entire league infact hadn't witnessed such a festival of goals except the
Nassarawa United 5-3 whooping of Abia United on the 28th of March.

As proudly joyous as the Government of the State and its people beamed,there stands out an ever motivating Maverick in Akan Udofia who never stops nudging our Sportsmen,Youth and Teams to greater heights. Recall he equally inspired the Super Eagles to victory over Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in that all important 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifier back in 2017 with $20,000 per goal. The Eagles fought hard to secure a 1-0 win.

So as we launch out on a glorious note in this month of August. The lesson for us is to stay focused and motivated. Seize the moment, dont waste your time but surround yourself with the right crew who respect and appreciate you.

As the race for Udom Emmanuel’s succession advances, political analysts are beginning to review a picture of sustaining the Akwa Ibom leadership template of throwing up leaders-in-season.

In 1998, the strong demand for a cerebral foundation builder threw up Obong Victor Attah who designed the City Master plan and development agenda which Senator Akpabio built on. Senator Akpabio expanded the Infrastructural designs by lavishly building roads and monumental landmarks like the e-library, Airport project, Tropicana mall with International Conference centre and 250room hotels.

Whereas Attah’s Science Park and Deep Seaport development suffered implementation setbacks but Ex-Governor Akpabio is reputed to have built men, great infrastructure and prominence for Akwa Ibom. He strutted the political landscape like the colossus he is. He bent over to impose the current Governor and had to decamp from the PDP to APC throwing the state into leadership limbo for a while.

Then came the economic recession and the need to have a Financial Wizard in the mould of Governor Udom Emmanuel with an Industrialization Agenda and over 15 small scale factories in the bag. The current Governor is doing a lot in catalysing the Entrepreneurial interest of the youth. He in turn abandoned the International Conference Centre and hotel project of Akpabio preferring instead to build a highly criticized church project with N10b whilst ignoring some of Akpabio’s legacy projects.

In about 22months, Governor Udom Emmanuel shall be leaving the stage after a tumultuous 8 years of struggle to fit into the large shoes of Senator Akpabio or fully meet the heightened expectations of Akwa Ibomites.

With a very vibrant people in political awareness occasioned by the Dakadda orientation, Akwa Ibom people earnestly require for men and women with business acumen to launch us further from Industrialization to growth in Education, Tourism, Capacity building and increased opportunity for the thronging population of our State.

Who could that Business Giant be
For a state that boasts of a virgin business climate, the expectation is to recruit successful businessmen to catapult commerce, entrepreneurship and innovative opportunities that will take us to prosperity.
Two names resonate with this expectation; Akan Udofia and Pastor Umoh Eno; the former being a successful Oil and Gas Mogul with an undoubted penchant for developing individuals.

 
Akan’s simple demeanour suggests a departure from excessive power play as he is perceived humble, has little or no airs as much as a tendency to connect more with the youth or common in our midst. Ever willing to throw support for struggling members of society, this philanthropist carries the heart of compassion and service. Would this character trait be enough to engender good governance? This is yet to be seen.

 
The latter in his own ways is seen as a hospitality guru laced with humility and civility. His toga as Pastorpreneur situates well with the Fathers of faith but leaves much to be desired in Political sagacity or Policy. Soft-spoken, a good listener and his unassuming nature are all positives for the Udom sibling’s candidate. Judging from the resentment suffered by Udom, the grapevine moots that his biggest enemies are his colleagues in Exco who beyond eyeing the seat are bent on frustrating the 2023 succession plans of Governor Emmanuel.

The larger political class argues that a man with the disposition to harmonise the State as well as relate with all irrespective of party is the best man for the job. Other gladiators are known to have too much political baggage and scores to settle alongside a minor experience in successfully running a business organization.

Should the pendulum swing either way then the successor must be globally endowed with connections and ideas to bring about innovation and prosperity for all.

The people of Ekid nation have challenged the Ibom Seaport managers to ignore unnecessary distractions and deliver “a world class port” that will be of benefit to all.
At a meeting between critical stakeholders and representatives of the Ibom Deep Seaport Implementation Board recently in Eket, the President of Ekid People’s Union (EPU) , Dr Sam Udonsak, also
assured the investors in the proposed Ibom Deep Seaport of utmost support, urging them not to be discouraged by “spurious, fictitious and provocative claims made by some parties to the ownership” of the proposed location.
He then commended the choice of location, which covers some portions of the ancestral land of the Ekid people like Okposo 1, Okposo 11, Itak Idim Ekpe, among others.
Recently, there has been renewed claims of exclusion or ownership of the land from some ethnic nationalities. However, Udonsak said: “ For the avoidance of doubt, the land is historically, legally, morally and so on, by every and any consideration the ancestral land of the Ekid people. It would remain so forever”.
Available facts and documents show that as far back as 1918, the Privy Council which was the highest appellate court in the British Empire declared that the present location of the Ibom Deep Seaport, which form what is generally known as Okoiyak, belonged to Ekid people. In 2003, the Federal High Court sitting at Uyo made a pronouncement in suit FHC/UY/C5/53/2003, affirming the 1918 Privy Council decision that the said land belong to Ekid.
However, Udonsak assured the Implementation Board that as a responsible people, EPU was more interested in the developmental impacts the seaport expectedly will bring to the entire state, hence would not join others trying to scare off the investors.
The EPU President endorsed the choice of the Ibom Seaport’s location, saying “it was arrived at after thorough and diligent considerations of the requirement for the port if that caliber”.

Udonsak urged the Implementation Board to adopt a constant dialogue approach with the host communities, including the people of Ekid nation.
The leader of the visiting team, Barr (Mrs) Mfon Usoro, appreciated the maturity of the Ekid people in reacting to an otherwise potentially volatile and sensitive issue as land ownership.
She assured the Ekid people that they will never be left behind and that the location for the seaport was carefully chosen after proper investigations and due diligence.

The Nigerian Ambassador to Angola, Professor Monique Ekpong has poured encomiums on the Governor of Cross River State, Sir Ben Ayade for his decision to join the rulling All Progressive Congress (APC).

Mrs Ekpong sent her good wishes via a release from her office in Luanda, Angola congratulating His Excellency, Sen. Prof Ben Ayade.

"I am delighted to express my most sincere congratulations, upon your decision to join the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Prof Ayade, who left the People's Democratic Party (PDP) within the week for the APC, had stated that the decision, which was made for the overall interest of the people, is to complement the efforts of President Buhari.

Prof. Ekpong assured the governor of her support, pledging to an anticipated productive cooperation between the government of the federation and Cross River State, which she said would ensure democracy dividends for Cross Riverians.

On Sunday 17th January, 2021, Akwa Ibom Youths’ gathered at Royalty Hotels and Recreation in an event tagged;
Save the Youths Conference.

The annual event which has come to stay, is an initiative by Isaac Nice and His Benevolent partners who have passion in youth development and celebration. They therefore saw the need to start an event that will focus on celebrating Youths’ of Akwa Ibom extract yearly.

This years’ edition witnessed the invention of a new program tagged; The Pitch.
Six (6) young Entrepreneurs Pitched wonderful business ideas and at the end, a team of young software developers won the prize with their Education software idea for students of Tertiary Institutions.

Another highpoint of the event was a short charge by the Commissioner for Lands and Water Resources, Pst. Umo Eno and I quote;

“Whenever God sends you, know that it is an experience for where you are going to and wherever you find yourself; always show commitment and be very diligent because there is always a time of wilderness before you come forth.
Also speaking, The Executive Director of Akwa Ibom Internal Revenue Service (AKIRS), Pst. Leo Leo Umana charged the Youths that “It is high time our young people are encouraged to know that they have to start somewhere, start from a little beginning and remain focused.

Most of the successful people in the society did not become rich as soon as they started.

They kept their eyes on the ball and worked hard, harnessing their potentials and bearing the pains in the struggles before they got to the top.”

...Urges Members to be Hopeful for a Better Year.

Ekid People's Union (EPU), an Akwa Ibom-based apex socio-cultural organisation, has charged governments at all levels to sincerely and speedily actualise, their often avowed commitments, in the new year, towards making life more tolerable and meaningful to the citizens.

In a goodwill message to mark the new year, EPU's President-General, Dr Samuel Udonsak, however urged the people to have a renewed hope for a more refreshing and fulfilling life experience in 2021 notwithstanding that Year 2020 had brought untold hardship, via economic devastation, social dislocation, infrastructural decay and grave global health challenges, that have no doubt resulted in unimaginable loss of hope.

Udonsak therefore reasoned that one way to restore lasting hope in the citizenry is for the governments to prioritise and focus on potentially impactful projects and programmes that will make life worth living.

He charged the Federal Government to be alive to its responsibility of securing the nation, by checking the carnage, kidnappings and banditry in some parts of the North and urged the Akwa Ibom State government particularly, to use 2021 to complete most of the laudable projects that it commenced way back in 2015.

Udonsak acknowledged the good intentions of government in initiating the yet to be completed projects, like the Eket-Ibeno Road, Atabong remodeling, China Market, Idua Road, Edem Udo , Klinic Road extension, Odio Road, Ikot Ukpong Road, Eket Sports Stadium, among others, all in Ekid Nation; but, posited that failure to complete them would defeat the lofty aims behind their initiation.

Udonsak further counselled that passing uncompleted projects to incoming administrations were behind the ill and poor relationships often experienced between predecessors and successors in the past and insisted that the EPU would not subscribe to any exaggerated desperation to plant a successor in the veil guise that the successor would be the one to complete the projects abandoned by its predecessor.

Still, EPU assured its teeming members that the new year will change the fortunes of Ekid Nation for the better, expressing the hope that potentially viable issues like the establishment of AKOPADEC (Akwa Ibom Oil Producing Areas Development Commission), the inclusion of Ekid Nation in the oil and gas free trade zone and the proper delineation of costal boundaries would receive positive outcomes in the coming year.

Although 2020 was generally adjudged as one of the most difficult years yet, EPU expressed gratitude to God for sustaining the Nation, Akwa Ibom State, Ekid Nation and the citizenry. He expressed regret for the loss of valuable lives of some Akwa Ibom people in 2020, particularly to Covid-19, and condoled with the families of the departed souls.

EPU observed that the ongoing global pandemic has challenged man to reflect on the deeper values of life and humanity, as it still affirms the supremacy of God in the affairs of man.

The body however called on everyone to support the government in its efforts to reboot the economy that has been ravaged by covid 19 while pleading for the continuous observance of all the necessary protocols of social distancing, personal hygiene, face masks and hand washing to help check the spread of the novel covid 19 virus, which recently developed a more dangerous strain.

Finally, the EPU wishes all Nigerians at home and in the diaspora a peaceful and prosperous new year.

Head Of Operations in Heritage Radio, received the organizers of SAVE THE YOUTH CONFERENCE in his office.

Speaking on behalf of the entire management of Heritage Radio, he said the Radio Station as a brand has endorsed the vision of the annual youth conference(Save The Youth).

In a bid to further develop unique tourism products to create traveler's engagement with the country, region and state's culture, Cross River State Governor, Prof. Ben Ayade will commission the Arts, Crafts and Cultural Village on Thursday, December 3, 2020 in Calabar.

The information is made available by the state commissioner for Culture & Tourism Development, Mr Eric Anderson while reacting to questions concerning tourism activities in the state during the 2020 yuletide.

The Arts, Crafts and Cultural Village will make its comeback with 40 booths, on December 1, 2020, at the premises of the Cultural Centre Complex, Calabar.
The Cultural Tourism initiative seeks to specifically celebrate and promote the lifestyle of Cross River people, their history, art, architecture, religion, and other elements that helped shape their way of life.

The Cultural Village will see the State's 18 Local Government Areas, showcasing tangible and intangible cultural heritage such as music, arts, cuisines, languages, wrestling, dances, ecetera, as part of the State's efforts in the preservation, promotion and exchange of the distinctive cultural wealth Cross River State is blessed with.

Hon. Anderson said that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, an unfortunate incident that affected tourism globally and which Cross River is known for, Sir Ayade is taking the front burner in the healing, reconnecting and rebuilding processes. He also added that "since one of the major COVID-19 safety guidelines harps on the need to avoid crowded areas, the Cultural Village will serve as a channel to ease crowd. "

Announcing the opening ceremony which takes place by 5pm on Thursday, the Commissioner called on Cross Riverians to laud and embrace the return of the Cultural Village, as he assured that strict COVID-19 guidelines will be enforced, adding that plans are already in motion with the appropriate quarters to ensure security, lighting, environmental health and safety for visitors and vendors.
