Business*anchor Insurance: A Brand Worth Protecting* by Uyouko2(op): 4:14pm On Jun 02
By Zik Zulu Okafor

In every economy, there are institutions that transcend their origins and become symbols of collective achievement. When such institutions emerge from government investment or support and grow into nationally respected brands, they deserve not only scrutiny and accountability but also protection from possible reputational damage.
Anchor Insurance is one of such institutions.
In recent days, a social media post appears to have triggered comments by the hard working and passionate Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno , concerning the state's investment in Anchor Insurance and the company's recapitalisation efforts. While the Governor's commitment to safeguarding public funds is understandable and commendable, the broader implications of public comments about a regulated financial institution deserve careful consideration.
The insurance business is built on one commodity above all else. And that is confidence.
Unlike manufacturers who sell physical products, insurance companies sell trust. Policyholders purchase promises. Investors buy into credibility. Brokers recommend brands based on reputation. The slightest suggestion that an insurer may be struggling financially can trigger unintended consequences that extend far beyond political messaging.
This is why statements concerning insurance companies must always be weighed carefully, particularly when they come from influential public office holders.

*A Corporate Success Story*
Anchor Insurance's recent history tells a compelling story of growth and transformation.
Over the years, the company has evolved from a relatively modest player into one of Nigeria's most visible and respected insurance brands.
Its financial performance reflects that journey.
The company moved from modest profitability a decade ago to reporting profits measured in billions of naira. Its premium income has continued to rise while its market ranking has improved significantly within the industry.
Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that this growth occurred in one of Nigeria's most competitive financial sectors.
Insurance companies do not become nationally relevant by accident. They do so through disciplined leadership, professional management, regulatory compliance, effective risk management and consistent service delivery.
Anchor's rise has been driven by a management team that many industry observers regard as experienced, professional and ambitious.
The company's aggressive branding strategy also deserves recognition.
For years, insurance struggled with visibility among ordinary Nigerians. Anchor broke that mould. Through sustained advertising campaigns and strategic marketing initiatives, including collaborations with popular music stars such as Patoranking and
premium advertising exposure on CNN's prime-time broadcasts, the company elevated its visibility, creating national awareness and making the Anchor brand part of everyday conversations and a household name.
That is not a small achievement.
Building a trusted financial services brand in Nigeria requires years of investment, consistency and strategic execution.

*Understanding the Recapitalisation Exercise*
The current conversation stems largely from the recapitalisation programme introduced by the insurance regulator.
The exercise was designed to strengthen insurance companies by increasing their capital base and positioning them for larger and more sophisticated business opportunities.
Recapitalisation is not the same thing as insolvency.
Across the world, healthy companies regularly raise fresh capital to meet regulatory requirements, expand operations, improve competitiveness or pursue future growth.
Indeed, investors are often attracted to firms that have demonstrated strong performance and promising prospects.
In the case of Anchor Insurance, available indicators suggest a company that has been growing, expanding its market presence and strengthening its position within the industry.
The decision by the Akwa Ibom State Government to participate in the recapitalisation process should therefore be viewed as an investment in a corporate asset rather than a bailout of a failed or failing enterprise. Anchor Insurance is very far from any of those.
As the majority shareholder, the state had every right to protect its stake and support the company's future ambitions.
For that, Governor Umo Eno deserves commendation.
The decision demonstrates confidence in an institution that continues to carry the Akwa Ibom brand beyond the state's borders. Not many states can boast of that.

*The Danger of Political Messaging*
However, difficulties arise when political communication inadvertently creates perceptions that may undermine investor confidence.
When a governor publicly suggests that government had to intervene because he does not know "what they are doing there," listeners may reasonably interpret such comments as evidence of corporate distress, mismanagement or even financial impropriety.
Such perceptions can have consequences.
Customers may become anxious.
Business partners may become cautious.
Brokers may begin asking questions.
Potential investors may hesitate. And
competitors may exploit the uncertainty.
The irony is that these consequences ultimately affect the value of the same asset in which government is the largest shareholder.
It is therefore in the state's own interest to protect the reputation of the company while it may still demand accountability at the appropriate time.

*Accountability Without Prejudice*
The Governor's proposal to deploy forensic auditors should also be viewed within the broader framework of accountability.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with auditing a company.
In fact, periodic audits strengthen institutions, reassure shareholders and improve transparency.
But there is a difference between auditing to establish facts and auditing from a position that appears to presume guilt before the process begins.
That is a jaundiced approach to auditing , an audit with a biased, cynical or prejudiced mindset.
Indeed, the tone matters.
The language matters.
The perception also matters.
Forensic audits are most effective when they are conducted independently, professionally and without preconceived conclusions.
The objective should be to discover the truth, not to validate assumptions.
If there are issues requiring attention, the audit will reveal them.
If there are none, the exercise will reinforce confidence in the company's governance structures and management.
Either outcome serves the public interest.

*A National Brand Deserving Support*
Today, Anchor Insurance is no longer merely an Akwa Ibom company.
It is a Nigerian company with national visibility and growing influence.
Its success reflects positively on the state government, its shareholders, its board and its management.
Every major corporate institution reaches a stage where sustainable growth becomes more important than political optics.
At that stage, shareholders must think like investors rather than politicians.
What Anchor Insurance requires now is stability, strategic support and a governance environment that encourages continued expansion.
The company should be challenged to perform better.
It should be held accountable.
Its books should be examined whenever necessary.
But it should also be celebrated for how far it has come.
For transforming itself into a nationally recognised insurance brand.
For creating jobs.
For attracting business.
For flying the Akwa Ibom flag in one of Nigeria's most competitive industries.
And for proving that state-backed enterprises can evolve into commercially successful institutions.
Governor Umo Eno deserves huge credit for supporting the recapitalisation of the company and protecting the state's investment. That is visionary leadership.
At the same time, preserving the reputation of that investment is equally important.
Corporate brands are difficult to build and easy to damage.
That is why politics and business must always meet carefully.
When they do, growth thrives.
When they do not, confidence suffers.
And in the insurance industry, confidence is everything.
No question, Governor Umo Eno's achievements in infrastructure development, aviation, tourism, investment promotion and governance have rightly earned him widespread commendation across Akwa Ibom State and far beyond. As he continues to champion the state's progress, it is equally important to nurture and strengthen institutions such as Anchor Insurance which, alongside Ibom Air, have become proud corporate ambassadors flying the Akwa Ibom flag high and projecting the state's excellence on the national stage.

EventsUnbelievable Ibom Plaza , Why Is Everyone Crying Over Toyin Empire Action by Uyouko2(op): 6:43pm On May 13
The atmosphere at Ibom Plaza was typical—the usual hustle, the sweat of traders, and the distant hum of the city. But yesterday, something shifted. A heavy silence fell over the crowd as a massive pot of Jollof rice, rich with the aroma of goat meat, began to steam in the heart of the square.

People whispered, "Who is the politician behind this?" In Akwa Ibom, we are used to "seasonal kindness"—the type that only appears when an election is around the corner. But as the plates were passed to the hungry, the elderly, and the struggling, the truth began to emerge. There was no campaign poster. No "vote for me" banners.
There was only a woman who looked strangely familiar to the old-timers in the market.

A Homecoming No One Expected
The veteran traders and the Plaza Management Committee stood frozen. They weren't looking at a stranger; they were looking at a ghost from their past.

"Is that not our old neighbor?" one trader whispered, tears welling up. "The one who used to struggle right here beside us?"
It was. It was Toyin Empire. But she wasn't there to brag about her fame as a Nigeria content creator or her Job as a Federal Government Staff. She didn't choose a luxury hall or a five-star hotel for her birthday. She chose the dust, the heat, and the people who knew her when she had nothing.

"I Understood Life from the Street"
When she finally spoke, her voice broke through the emotions of the crowd.
"I might no longer have a shop in Plaza," she said, looking into the eyes of those still fighting for survival, "but I understood life from the street. The street was my teacher. It shaped my resilience and my hunger for greatness... but it also showed me strength."
She continued, her voice trembling with a deep sense of purpose: "Today, I am a certified public relations scholar and a content creator. But I am still that girl who understands you. I see you. I feel your reality. I believe deeply that your story does not end here. That is why I am here—not in a luxury hall, but right here with you."
The Coronation of a Heart of Gold
Inspired by the philosophy of Governor Umo Eno, who advocates for celebrating with the less privileged, Toyin reminded everyone that the food and drinks were merely symbols. "We are sharing love and a reminder that you matter," she declared.

The scene became overwhelming. Old friends embraced her, prayers broke out from the corners of the Plaza, and mothers held their children as they ate, moved by a kind of sincerity rarely seen in our world today.

In a spontaneous outburst of love and gratitude, as the birthday cake was cut, the people didn't just sing "Happy Birthday." They did something far more symbolic. Right there, amidst the people who raised her, they crowned her The Queen of the Street.

A Prayer for Toyin Empire:
As you have remembered the roots that watered you, may Heaven open new doors for you. May the hunger you satisfied for others never visit your household. May your "Empire" grow beyond borders, and may your light never dim.
The Queen of the Street has officially taken her throne. Did you forget to wish her a happy birthday? Drop your prayers for her

Nairaland GeneralNiger-delta Food Security Summit & Expo 2026 Unveiled In Uyo by Uyouko2(op): 7:04am On Feb 25
By Victor Oton

The Chairman of the Planning Committee for the Niger-Delta Food Security Summit & Expo, Mr. Emmanuel Robert (FPMC), has officially unveiled the 2026 edition of the regional summit, describing it as a decisive intervention to tackle food insecurity, energy challenges, and youth unemployment across the Niger-Delta.

Speaking at a press briefing in Uyo, Robert said the summit would hold from April 22 to 24, 2026, at Ceedapeg Hotels, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, under the theme: “Food Security, Energy & Youth Inclusivity: Engaging the Youths to Secure the Future of the Niger-Delta.”

He explained that the summit is designed as a strategic and solution-driven gathering aimed at confronting what he described as the “twin crises” of food insecurity and youth unemployment affecting the oil-rich region.

According to him, despite the Niger-Delta’s vast hydrocarbon wealth, rich biodiversity, fertile soil, and aquatic resources, many communities across Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Imo, Abia, and Ondo States continue to grapple with hunger and economic hardship.

“The Niger-Delta is one of the most paradoxical regions in the world. We sit atop immense natural wealth, yet food insecurity and youth unemployment remain stark realities for our people,” Robert stated.
He noted that the summit would go beyond rhetoric, serving as an incubator for practical solutions, investment opportunities, and youth-driven innovation in agriculture, renewable energy, and food systems.

Robert emphasized that the theme of the summit was carefully chosen to reflect the interconnectedness of food production, energy access, and youth participation. He said reliable and affordable energy remains critical to agricultural productivity, irrigation, food processing, storage, and transportation.

He added that youth inclusivity would be central to the three-day event, with structured platforms designed to allow young innovators and entrepreneurs from the nine Niger-Delta states to present solutions and participate directly in policy conversations.
The summit is expected to attract governors and government representatives, commissioners for agriculture and natural resources, development finance institutions, multilateral agencies, private investors, agribusiness entrepreneurs, energy companies, climate experts, civil society organisations, academic institutions, and youth leaders.

Sessions will include plenary addresses, technical workshops, breakout roundtables, and an expo segment where agribusinesses, energy firms, and youth-led enterprises will showcase innovations.

Robert also announced that the Country Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Dr. Hussein Gadain, has accepted to deliver the keynote address, describing his participation as a strong endorsement of the summit’s credibility and global relevance.

He said Uyo was selected as host city due to its growing reputation for infrastructure development and hospitality, as well as the world-class facilities available at the summit venue.

Calling on members of the media to play an active role, Robert urged journalists to amplify conversations around food security challenges in the Niger-Delta, which he said often receive limited national attention compared to other regions.

“As we unveil this summit, we are also commencing pre-summit activities across the nine Niger-Delta states,” he said, listing state-level consultations, youth mobilisation and registration drives, agro-innovation showcases, stakeholder engagements with development finance institutions, and a digital media campaign among the planned activities.

He further announced that partnership and sponsorship opportunities are open, while exhibition spaces and youth participation slots are currently being curated by the organising committee.
Robert concluded by stating that the summit represents the region’s resolve to chart its own path toward food security, energy sufficiency, and inclusive prosperity.

“The Niger-Delta has powered the Nigerian economy for decades. Now, we are convening our own minds, elevating our youth, and designing our own pathways to a secure and prosperous future,” he said.

The Niger-Delta Food Security Summit & Expo 2026 was formally declared open, with pre-summit activities set to begin immediately.

Nairaland GeneralMalaysian Founder Of EDMARK Group Invited By Interpol For Money Laundering by Uyouko2(op): 11:35am On Nov 21, 2024
Malaysian Founder of EDMARK Group Invited by Interpol for Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing Allegations

Sam Low Ban Chai, founder and chairman of Edmark Industries based in Malaysia, has been invited by the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) to answer questions regarding serious allegations of money laundering and terrorism financing.

The allegations stem from a petition filed by Maurice Etim, a minority partner and director in several Edmark Group companies in Nigeria. Etim claims that Sam Low Ban Chai forged his signature on corporate resolutions, financial statements, and tax returns, and also opened and closed over 500 bank accounts without his knowledge or approval.

Investigation revealed that Sam Low Ban Chai's actions were in flagrant disregard of board resolutions and approvals, and were prejudicial to Etim's interests. The invitation from Interpol requests Sam Low Ban Chai's presence at the Interpol head office in Abuja, Nigeria, for an interview with the Assistant Inspector General of Police and Head, National Central Bureau, Interpol.

Similar allegations have been leveled against Donald Anih, head of Edmark's legal department and company secretary, who was appointed without board resolution and approval. Following Interpol's investigation, Sam Low Ban Chai fled Nigeria and moved all foreign staff in eleven branches nationwide.

According to a release made available to journalists, Mr Etim stated that from Malaysia, instead of facing the charges leveled against him, Chai hired Ebun Adegboruwa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), who has been accused of frustrating several court orders and police investigations. As such, legal experts are questioning why a respected lawyer like Adegboruwa would hinder the investigation into these serious allegations.

The case bears similarities to the recent charges filed by the Federal Government of Nigeria against Binance, a top crypto firm, for laundering $35.4 million, tax evasion offenses, and financing terrorism. The actions of Sam Low Ban Chai and Edmark Group are part of a broader international pattern of money laundering and terrorism financing, and experts argue that the courts should hold the company and its executives accountable.

Nairaland GeneralWike VS Ireti Khinkigbe: 'stop Attacking Female Politicians' -mina Horsfall To W by Uyouko2(op): 6:51pm On Jul 05, 2024

Female politician and activist, Lady Mina Horsfall has called on the women folk in Nigeria, to rise up to verbal attacks against the person of Senator Ireti Kingibe, by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr Nyesom Wike.

The Kalabari born Politician and activist made the call at her office in Abuja on Thursday, July 4th while commenting on the trending feud between the two politicians.

Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had said that Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, has refused to communicate with her. Kingibe claims that Wike's refusal to communicate has left her unable to effectively represent her people in the Senate.

In a bid not to seem belittled, Wike in a video circulating on the social media allegedly threatened to block Kingibe's re-election in 2027. According to her, 'using words which are not suitable to a woman or even a human'.
In her words, 'It is only a man who does not respect he's wife and daughters would publicly disrespect, threathen, and pull down a woman, be it at home, in the office or in the political space, whether opposition or not.'

Mina said in a sane society, the FCT minister should be called to order, he has the right to project his good works in FCT without pulling down any office holder and especially, a woman. 'Wike was born of a woman and should respect a woman, he is just a political appointee in the FCT. He will serve his tenure and return home, Senator Ireti is a FCT based and an elected office holder. I am speaking as a concerned citizen of Rivers which Sir Wike represents and a female politician, she added he should stop putting Rivers-State in the spotlight for the wrong reasons.

The ex-beauty queen who is a stalwart of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), member of the D-37 (DOKPESI POLITICAL FAMILY) and Simplified Movement FCT/ DIASPORA, and former Candidate for the LGA chairmanship seat in the FCT, said 'I am surprised that no Labour Party (LP) stake holder or even the National Woman Leader has tackled him on that', this she feels is very wrong of the party and opinion leaders in Nigeria.

In other news, Kingibe suggested that legislation should be put in place to increase women's participation in politics in Nigeria, but that would not trend. Corroborating Senator Kingibe, Mina who is the National Coordinator of United Nigerians for PDP (UN4PDP) said women are peaceful beings, good managers and drivers of development in the family and community, hence the need to build development partners in women to occupy key positions in government.

Talent Manager commends President Tinubu over appointment of Entertainment Adviser

...says it renews hope for talents in the multi-million dollar industry!

The president of the federal republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has received several commendations for bold steps taken since he was sworn into office last month.

One of such is from Lagos born entertainment journalist, talent manager and impresario, Nelson NseAbasi, who has commended President Bola Tinubu for appointment of a special adviser on Culture & Entertainment Economy, in person of Hannatu Musa Musawa.

The entertainment entrepreneur made the remark in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State while addressing press men on what the future holds for talents in the Nigerian entertainment industry and his start-up Talent Bank Nigeria.

While speaking, Nelson said the last that was heard of entertainment at the presidential level was during the time of former president Goodluck Jonathan, according to him, in that era, there were series of interactions by Mr President with critical stakeholders in the entertainment industry, as the then President had promised to inject funds to boost the revenue of the creative economy, as a key income earner for the country, but all of that became past tense when he lost the election in 2015, he stated.

Although I have not met her before, I received with joy the appointment of the special adviser to the president, culture and entertainment economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa. I am also confident that she will deliver on the task of coordinating the vibrant sector.

Hannatu Musa Musawa is a renowned advocate for culture and the entertainment industry in Nigeria. She has actively promoted the growth and development of these sectors through her work as a filmmaker, cultural entrepreneur, and policy advocate.

Musawa’s appointment as the Special Adviser for Culture and Entertainment Economy can be referred to as placing a square peg in a square hole, as she will bring to bare her deep understanding and passion for harnessing the potential of these industries for national development, the talent banker submitted.

Nelson who is known for his creative consultancy services for the entertainment desks of several administrations in Cross River and his home-state Akwa Ibom, has served on the board of top notch government and private sector sponsored events across Nigeria for years well over the last decade.

His start-up, Talent Bank Nigeria seeks to get on-board a reliable database project for the Nigerian entertainment industry.
