The President-General of Ekid People's Union (EPU), Dr Samuel Udonsak, has assured the people of Ekid Nation that the body has initiated a number of moves to ensure that they are no longer deprived of their rights. Udonsak's comment was specifically in respect of the recently approved Oil and Gas Free Zone for Akwa Ibom State. He said the Union was aware of the exclusion of Eket and Esit Eket from the number of local governments on whose land the facility is marked to be located, and described this as an apparent error which has to be corrected. The said exclusion has, for weeks, generated a lot of tension within the Ekid Nation, with some people aggitating for protests and other forms of reactions to draw government's attention to the perceived injustice. While calling for calm, the president-general, in a statement signed by EPU's Publicity Secretary, Chief Usoro I. Usoro, Ph.D, said that the union would deploy all available legal and reasonable means to ensure that the rights of Ekid Nation are restored. The Liberty Oil and Gas Free Zone, said to be the largest in West Africa, reportedly sits on a physical land space measuring more than 50,000 hectares spread across six local government areas of Ikot Abasi, Eastern Obolo, Oruk Anam, Mkpat Enin, Onna and Ibeno. Udonsak said the EPU found it curious how Eket and Esit Eket could have been skipped in the arrangement. He therefore pledged the Union's resolve to unearth the actual reasons behind the apparent error. "Because the facility is already on Ekid land, we believe Ekid nation cannot be rightly excluded", he reportedly said. Hence, as a preliminary move, the President-General has met with the Managing Director of the Oil and Gas Free Zones Authority (OGFZA), Umana Okon Umana, who reportedly informed that the Liberty Free Zone was based on coordinates and not on local government bases. EPU is said to be doing everything possible to obtain the relevant documents, including the survey plans, that will adequately explain the modalities for the said decision. The outcome of EPU's findings, the statement said, will be deliberated in a few days at an expanded stakeholders meeting of the Union. The Liberty Oil and Gas Free Zone is expected to accommodate a multibillion dollar integrated 200,000 bpd refinery and petrochemical plant; a gas plant, etc, that could employ over 7,000 persons. While commending both the federal and state governments for the siting of the Oil and Gas Free Zone in Akwa Ibom, Udonsak however urged that the right thing should be done to ensure that no one is cheated of his constitutional as well as God-given rights.

As the forthcoming Local Government election in Akwa Ibom draws nearer, the people of Esit Eket have been critically and objectively appraising the impact of government in the years past, comparing it with the existing value creation, youth empowerment/human Capacity development and gender equality under the Hon. Iniobong Robson-led administration. About 95% of entire Esit Eket indigenes are calling for the re-election of Hon. Robson, an indication that he is generally accepted as a leader with commitment to improve on socio-cultural and economic condition of the Local Government and her citizenry. The time has come for those threatening the peaceful coexistence and unity of Esit Eket through baseless sponsored blackmails and agitation to align with believers of good governance and support the re-election of the incumbent Chairman, Hon. Iniobong Robson. Irrespective of political, social affinity, cultural background and beliefs, one with clear vision, mission and value for best resul is Mr. ROBSON who has significantly translated his vision and mission for the betterment of Esit Eket and has focused more on community development and youth empowerment. Therefore, the agitation by few individuals whose electoral strength cannot do otherwise, crying for adoption of certain acclaimed signed document/agreement as a binding criteria to decide which zone should produce the next Chairman of Esit Eket out of the three zones of (A,B,C) does not represent equity and fairness for practical political balancing in a democratic setting like ours. Unarguably, the second coming of INIOBONG ROBSON will encourage and promote positive impact without allowing self interest to overide the process. Having appraised the political terrain, arguments and armouries engaged by various camps in respect to 2020-2923 chairmanship zoning, I wish to remind the people that a united Esit Eket can only be attained when the youths rise and regain their conscience and integrity. Truth, they say, is always bitter, but the obvious truth in this context which is glaring to all is that, the most preferred and divinely favoured aspirant (Iniobong Robson) would surely emerge victorious amidst the storm. Most interesting is his unquantifiable passion for quality leadership, generosity and service to humanity that this emerging leader possesses and this have greatly revealed his readiness and desire for remarkable footprint which is worth sustaining by giving him the mandate to continue till 2023. To all the would be electorates, stakeholders and canvassers, whatsoever your interest may be, painting our LGA to the world on the negative should be discouraged and we must admit that the best for our LGA is to elect a capable leader who will fiercely initiate, create and facilitate development to further compliment on the completion agenda of Governor Udom Emmanuel. #EtebeRealityProject Comrade Jerryz Edoho, writes from Idua Ntak-Inyang, Esit Eket LGA.

*Agricultural Innovation: By MefLyN Anwana Better days are indeed here for farms in Akwa Ibom state, as a drone revolution births in the state, pioneered by JOSEG ROBOTICS, a technology start-up based in Akwa Ibom State. The tech start-up has successfully built aerial robotics (UAV or Drone) and AG sensor drones that can assess Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVA) which interprets farm data to decide which farm areas require attention. In a recent demonstration at the “OurFarms NG” field day, the indigenous tech start-up showed that farm inputs such as fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides could be applied with the aid of drones. And what’s better? The drones are locally fabricated and best adapted to indigenous weather conditions. At the field day demonstration, I commended the local start-up for their innovation, noting that aerial robotics are indeed the future of agriculture. Drones, more formally known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) or Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs) essentially are flying robots that can be remotely controlled or flown autonomously through software-controlled flight plans in their embedded systems, working in conjunction with onboard sensors and GPS. In the past, drones were mostly associated with the military, where they were used for anti-aircraft target practices, intelligence gathering and more controversially as weapons platforms. However, drones have recently been deployed to civilian and of course more productive uses, namely: search and rescue, surveillance, traffic monitoring, weather monitoring, firefighting, photography, agriculture, amongst others. With indigenous firms like JOSEG ROBOTICS venturing into the production and fabrication of these drones, (which will ensure local sourcing, availability and technical support services), Agropreneurs in AkwaIbom are set to explore new ways that will yield great returns in the overall.According to the food and agriculture organization of the united nations (FAO), the usefulness of drones in agriculture cannot be overemphasized. In an article by the business insider, quoted on the FAO website, the uses enumerated include mapping, crop-dusting, spraying amongst others. Away from drones, the Our Farm.NG’s first field day, whichheld on the 28th of July 2020 was a rare opportunity for field goers to see firsthand, the fields and different crops cultivated by Our Farm at Ikot Uso community, Nsit Ubium Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. The field goers were taken through the fields of 4.3 hectares’ plantain farm intercropped wiith Egusi, corn and cassava. We were also shown a 3 hectares’ land, prepared for a fully functional integrated farm to be launched in the last quarter of the year. Speaking at the field day, Idorenyin Essiet, the farm managershared the vision of “Our Farm.NG” and its Co-Founders (Uzoma Azumara and Emeka Anoliefo) which he said would leverage on the business of agriculture, to not only create wealth for its partners and investors, but to improve the quality of lives in the ruralcommunities by supporting them in 3 critical areas namely:Education, Health and Provision of basic social amenities. Commendations were given to the Governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration for placing premium on food sufficiency & driving sustainable development through agriculture. In the words of Idorenyin Essiet, “the recent enumeration of Farmers in the State will go a long way in exploring aggregators with the availability of big Data”. Essiet also highlighted the need for cross sectoral collaboration by the Private sector to engage agric business in the state and encouraged youth involvement in the sector. Clearly, the adoption of modern technologies in agriculture, such as the use of ag sensor drones or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to determine the NDVI (Normalised Difference vegetation index) of any farm can significantly enhance risk anddamage assessments and revolutionize the way Africa prepares for and responds to disasters that impacts Agric Business via precision farming. It is indeed heartwarming to see that AkwaIbom Entrepreneurs like JOSEC ROBOTICS and Ourfarm.NG are rising to the faith of their greatness, gearing up to engage a broad spectrum of engagements in the Agric Value Chain.

Dear compatriots, There is no time most auspicious for a sobre reflection on human frailty, vulnerability and finitude than now. This year's Easter anniversary, though marred by the ongoing global pandemic called Covid 19, challenges us as Christians to reflect on the deeper values of life and humanity. It is therefore important that we remember that as mortals, God reigns supreme in all our affairs. Hence, we believe God will avail man the needed capacity to contain the pandemic. The global scourge may put us through a temporary setback, but we must not lose our faith in God as the ultimate redeemer and saviour. This Easter should remind us why Christ came to die for our failings and foibles. To that extent, we must resolve to live better in order to bequeath lofty legacies. Therefore, in the spirit of Easter, the leadership and stakeholders of Ekid People's Union (EPU), enjoin us all to stay safe. Staying safe simply implies abiding by all directives issued by government in the desperate bid to contain the novel virus. It is for our good, as obedience to constitutes authorities is one of the requirements of our Christian faith. Thus, we are demanded to stay home and stay safe! In simpler terms, "staying safe" means social or better out physical distancing, maintaining a high level of personal hygiene and obeying the shelter-at-place order issued by government. In our show of humanity, we must endeavour to act as sensitizing agents, reminding one another of a common enemy called Covid 19. Meanwhile, EPU sincerely commends Akwa Ibom State government as well as all the stakeholders in healthcare services for the efforts and sacrifices made so far to keep us safe. It is our ernest prayer that God bless and keep us all in His grace to survive this trying moment. Happy Easter! Signed: Dr Samuel Udonsak (President General, Ekid People's Union).

The President General of Ekid People's Union, Dr Samuel Udonsak, has urged all sons and daughters of Ekid Nation to look up to the new year with hope and dedication. In a goodwill message to mark the new year, Udonsak charged all the people of Ekid at home and abroad to recommit themselves to the task of rebuilding their communities and the state. He gave the assurance that 2020 will rediscover the lost fortunes of Ekid nation and that the voice of the people will be heard again. Displaying much focus and commitment, Udonsak said the current leadership of EPU under his watch will ensure that all the relevant issues concerning Ekid nation get due attention and appropriate actions from the year 2020. According to him, EPU has already started consultation with the relevant stakeholders with a view to ensuring that the critical development issues in Ekid nation are properly tackled. He however called on the people for support and urged every Ekid citizen at home and across the globe to get involved with suggestions, refreshing ideas, and committed resources to help make Ekid work again. According to him, no one man can rebuild Ekid but with a combined effort, commitment and dedication, the lost glory of the ethnic nationality can be recovered. Ekid nation, he recalled, used to serve as the bedrock of many other ethnic nationalities as well as serving as the launching pad for some of today's local governments. He reminded the people that they once shone the light for others and led the way to greatness but wondered what happened that Ekid lost its pride of place in course of time. Udonsak however pointed out that the time for Ekid to reclaim its pride of place among the community of nations has arrived with the new year.
