Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri has issued a 12-hour ultimatum binning from 6:00 pm – 6:00 am to hoodlums to return looted items from public, private warehouses, and homes to the nearest Police station or traditional rulers nearest to them. Fintiri in a state-wide broadcast on Tuesday said the ultimatum would expire at 6:00 am on Wednesday, 28th – October 2020. He said an executive order for a house-to-house search would commence by 7:00 am the same day after the expiration of the ultimatum. The statement reads, “Part of the provision of the order is a sanction that will attract withdrawal of C of O and if necessary, demolition of every house that harbors any of the stolen properties. “The attempt by hoodlums to usher us into anarchy by breaking into our warehouses to loot away our emergency reserves and the partly delivered CACOVID support to the state is criminal. 38 cops injured, 29 formations burnt, vandalised – Lagos CP 520 suspects held, looted items recovered Ten persons comprising six policemen and four civilians were killed, and 38 cops injured in Lagos during violent protests that erupted last week, the police have said. CLICK HERE TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED The police also said 16 police stations were burnt and 13 vandalised by hoodlums who hijacked the peaceful #ENDSARS protests across the state. Police Commissioner, Hakeem Odumosu gave these details Tuesday while parading 520 suspects arrested for their alleged involvement in the wanton destruction and looting of both private and public properties. According to Odumosu, the six policemen killed were ASP Yard Edward, attached to Denton Police Station; Inspector Olayinka Erinfolami of defunct Anti Kidnapping Unit (AKU); Inspector Adegbenro Aderibigbe attached to Meiran Division, Sergeant Abejide Abiodun of Department of Operations (DOPs), State Headquarters and two others attached to Orile Division. He said 58 police vehicles were burnt,13 vandalised, 62 vehicles belonging to individuals and those connected with some pending cases (exhibits) were burnt and nine other vehicles vandalised by the hoodlums. Odumosu also disclosed that 15 motorcycles and tricycles were torched and 65 vandalised at various locations within the state. For public assets destroyed, Odumosu listed High Court Complex Igbosere, Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre, Broad Street; Ejigbo LCDA Secretariat; BRT Terminal Iddo (where 67 buses were burnt); City Hall, Lagos Island; COVID-19 Warehouse at Monkey Village; BRT Terminals at Ojodu and Ikotun; Ajeromi Ifelodun LG Secretariat; NPA Head Office, Marina, and FRSC/VIO Office at Ojodu where only the vehicles parked outside the main buildings within their compounds were burnt. They included Orile, Amukoko, Layeni, Old Area J Command Ajah, Elemoro, New Area J Command Elemoro, Igando, Ebute-Ero, and its barracks and Ilasamaja Police Stations. Others were Makinde and its barracks, Ikotun, Isokoko, Pen-Cinema, Onipanu, Alade Police Stations etc. “Thirteen formations were vandalised amongst which were Ojo and Ojodu Stations. Police posts burnt included Cele, llogbo-Elerin, Shibiri, Defunct Anti-Cultism office, Gbagada, Defunct SARS Office Onilekere, Makoko, Daleko, Ashamu, Makinyo, Amuwo-Odofin, Defunct Anti-Kidnapping Office, Surulere and 0ld SARS Office Ajegunle. “During the unrest, the police posts that were vandalised by the hoodlums included PPL, Mowo, Morogbo, Ikota and Mawa police posts. “Some private facilities as well as other investments that were partly torched and vandalised/looted included the Oba of Lagos’ Palace; Television Continental Station (TVC) at Ikosi-Ketu, Access Bank, GTBank and Ebeano Supermarket at Victoria Island, The Nation Newspaper office at Fatai Atere Street, Mushin, Shoprite Malls at Ajah, LTV 8, Alausa, Ikeja, Surulere, Samsung Outlet at Apple Roundabout, Festac, Shoprite at Festac, Samsung Office Oyingbo, etc. However, some of the looted items from these outlets/offices have been recovered. “Based on these incidences, the command was able to arrest a total of 520 suspects for various offences ranging from arson, robbery, murder, rioting, malicious damage, and unlawful possession of firearms,” he said. Among those arrested, Odumosu said, was one Olamilekan Ibrahim, 19, alleged to have been among those who broke into a commercial bank and carted away cash, other valuables in Lekki. He said two suspects identified as Ebere Reuben, 29, and Samuel Oyediran, 16, were also arrested by RRS operatives for their involvement in burning of the BRT terminal at Berger and TVC Station in Lagos State, respectively. The police boss, who acknowledged that those arrested were not peaceful #ENDSARS protesters, stated that it was a known fact armed hoodlums hijacked the protests and were responsible for series of killings, arson and looting recorded. “Thorough investigation into the cases has commenced. Members of the public should be rest assured that they will be updated as investigation progresses. At this juncture, I will like to appreciate officers and men of this command for their doggedness, gallantry and commitment to maintaining law and order and restoration of normalcy to the state. “Also, I commend the community leaders and stakeholders for their support in this regard, especially on recovery of the looted arms and ammunition and valuables. They have been so helpful. Last but not the least the command appreciates other sister/security agencies for their support in the struggle for restoration of peace and harmony to the state. “…permit me to re-assure the good people of Lagos State that we will leave no stone unturned in providing adequate security for all and sundry. Emphatically, for the ember months, the command has put measures in place to legally deal with the criminals who might want to foment troubles or deprive law-abiding Lagosians of their property,” he said. But most of the suspects denied involvement in the violence alleging that they were picked up randomly during raids. One Ibrahim in whose possession several looted items were allegedly found denied the accusation insisting that he only showed security agents were the items were kept in Ebute Meta. Some of the suspects, who became dramatic, claimed they were either arrested at the bus stop while going about their legitimate duties or apprehended in front of their shops or near their homes. As the parade ground became chaotic, the police started returning the suspects into waiting Black Maria to prevent breakdown of order.

Election observer group, the Centre for Transparency Advocacy (CTA) has decried what it described as “brazen vote buying” by politicians during Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo state. The group which said voting buying remains a major problem in the nation’s electoral system called on stakeholders in the electoral process to come out with modalities to address the menace. It also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for early deployment of election materials. The statement which was signed by CTA executive director, Faith Nwadishi said on the average, reports from their observers deployed to the field indicated that polling units opened at 8.30 am as INEC Officials and materials in most places arrived as early as 7.30 am. She however said there were however few exceptions where officials and materials arrived after 8.30am She said, “Despite the fear of violence occasioned by altercations among the major players before the election as well as the morning rain, voter turnout was largely impressive. We therefore commend the electorates for their courage and determination in turning out enmasse inspite of all odds.” Nwadishi however, said despite the efforts of INEC, the group observed with concern the lack of adherence to the Covid-19 protocols by majority of voters. According to her, “Our observers report indicated that in most of the polling units, voters refused to observe social distancing and, in many cases, refused to put on their face mask. “Regrettably, our observers reported that vote buying is becoming more brazen and was a major feature of this election. INEC, the Security Agencies and other stakeholders need to work out measures to effectively address this ugly phenomenon.” She said while the election was relatively peaceful, CTA observers reported pockets of violence. She said for instance at Edo Lodge (Ward 4 Unit 11, Akure South LG), observers reported cases of gun shots by suspected hoodlums; same was also reported at Ijomu/Obanla in Akure South LG where miscreants were also reported to have disrupted the voting process by shooting into the air. She said, “We call on security agencies to be proactive in nipping in the bud attempts by hoodlums to disrupt election Conclusion” Reacting to the boat mishap involving INEC staff, she noted with delight that no life was lost in the boat mishap that happened in Ilaje axis of the state and also commended the quick intervention of the Nigerian Navy and other concerned citizens that helped in saving the lives of the affected people. She said, “we commend INEC and all relevant stakeholders for ensuring a relatively free, fair and credible election so far. We do hope that the relatively free and fair process will be replicated during the collation process.”

Judge Hamilton also required the government to reconsider prior denials of stimulus check applications that were due to the incarceration status of a person within 30 days. To ensure accountability, Hamilton ordered that “within 45 days, defendants [IRS and Treasury] shall file a declaration confirming these steps have been implemented, including data regarding the number and amount of benefits that have been disbursed.” As of May, 2020, at least 80,000 incarcerated individuals were eligible for economic impact payments of over $100 million, according to a report by the Treasury Department’s Inspector General. These individuals should, therefore, receive a much needed financial infusion in the coming months. Other incarcerated individuals who may not have filed a claim are also eligible now. “The country is suffering during this pandemic and economic crisis, and incarcerated people and the families they rely on for support are no exception,” said Yaman Salahi, a Partner at Lieff, Cabraser, Heimann & Bernstein, who is representing the Plaintiffs and Class. “Judge Hamilton’s order ensures that incarcerated people will receive the sorely needed economic assistance that Congress allocated. The case emerged following passage of the CARES Act, which including a mechanism for the IRS to issue economic impact payments (EIP), more commonly referred to as stimulus checks, to eligible Americans. On May 6, 2020 the IRS updated responses to EIP “Frequently Asked Questions” in which it stated that incarcerated individuals do not qualify for stimulus checks. The IRS and Treasury subsequently refused to issue payments to eligible incarcerated individuals.

Interestingly, although both parents are from Adamawa State, they belong to different political parties.
