The Federal Government has paid each of the constables deployed for the Osun State governorship election a sum of N50,000 as special duty allowance. A total of 18,426 police personnel have been deployed in Osun State for the governorship election coming up on Saturday, September 22. Our correspondents gathered that the police had paid the money into the salary accounts of each officer participating in the exercise. According to a source, while N50, 000 was paid to each of the policemen from the rank of constable to sergeant, those within the rank of Inspector, Assistant Superintendent of Police and Deputy Superintendent of Police were paid N120,000 each. Each of the eight Commissioners of Police deployed for the exercise was reportedly paid N250,000. At least two constables confirmed to one of our correspondents that they received N50,000 each for the election duty. Investigation reveals that an average of constable takes home N45,000 per month after tax deductions. The Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Mr Fimihan Adeoye, when contacted on the telephone, also confirmed the payment to our Osun State correspondent, though he was silent on the amount. He said the Federal Government had paid the allowances of the officers deployed for election duty. He said, “The allowances of the officers deployed for the election have been paid. The allowances were paid into their accounts.” He stated that the Inspector General of Police, Mr Idris Ibrahim, said at a stakeholders’ forum organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission that the funds had been made available to pay the policemen. The IGP had said that the policemen that would be deployed for the election had been trained properly, adding that the Federal Government had also provided funds for the payment of the officers’ allowances for the election. He said, “Arrangements have been concluded to deploy over 18,426 police personnel including conventional and PMF units, intelligence and technical teams to provide security. “This number excludes the support services to be provided by other security personnel from the armed forces, the Immigration Service, the prisons, the Customs and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to complement the efforts of the police. “Politicians and their supporters are advised to desist from actions that may precipitate violence before, during and after the election. “The police officers deployed for this election have been lectured and educated on electoral conducts, behaviours, laws and offences, and are, therefore, expected to conduct themselves in a highly ethical manner.” Meanwhile, the Civil Societies Coalition for the Emancipation of Osun State has warned policemen deployed in the state for the poll against conniving with politicians to rig the election. The Chairman of the group, Mr Sulaiman Adeniyi, said this at a press conference in Osogbo on Tuesday. He said policemen should be professional in their conduct and shun any overtures made to them by corrupt politicians to assist them in truncating the wishes of the people of the state. Also, the Executive Chairman, Centre Against Corruption and Open Leadership, Mr Debo Adeniran, and a former Vice President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr Monday Ubani, said the allowances to the policemen were justified as it would insulate them against financial inducement by corrupt politicians. Adeniran said, “Electoral duty presupposes that the policemen may not have time to stay in their hotels and they are not going to be with their families and the election day may be a day when not many food sellers would be available. “So, they may need more money to feed themselves in highbrow hotels and eateries. That is one of the ways by which fraudulent politicians compromise the integrity of the police. So, I believe that may be the reason they are being paid that much; that they should be able to take care of themselves so that they will not be attracted to corruption of any sort.” Ubani said, “If the government has actually increased the allowance of policemen posted for election, I don’t have anything against it. I don’t have anything against policemen being paid adequate allowances because they risk their lives. But let it be that that allowance does not have any inducement tone, and is not meant to make them do the wrong thing. The police must serve the interest of Nigerians and not the interest of any political party that is in power.” Adeleke kicks The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ademola Adeleke, said the payment of election duty allowance was suspicious. ABEOKUTA—A two-term governor of Sokoto State and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Presidential aspirant, Dr Attahiru Bafarawa, yesterday, described the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government as a disaster. Bafarawa, who insisted that Nigeria “is sick because the leadership is sick”, said the opposition party will get rid of the government in 2019. He spoke with newsmen shortly after addressing Ogun State executives and delegates of the PDP, as part of his ongoing campaign tour in Abeokuta. •Dr. Attahiru Bafarawa: Bafarawa said: “We don’t have a nation under the leadership of APC government. That is why we, in PDP, have to put our house in order and ensure that we get rid of the APC government in this country because it is a disaster to the country. This country is sick because the leadership is sick. “We cannot allow this to continue. Forget about the number of aspirants, we are all members of one family. Whoever gets the party ticket, we will all work together and make sure we succeed in 2019.” “In trying to do damage control, we are not going to witch-hunt anybody because when you are building a nation. “As a leader, you are not expected to look at the back; you have to face the problem. Nobody can do it alone. It requires our collective resolve as a people and as a nation to put the country in good place.” “I also want you to know that my presidential ambition is not a do or die affair.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/09/buharis-govt-a-disaster-says-bafarawa/

LAGOS—A United States, US-based Nigerian group has protested strongly against the threat to kill the lone Christian captive in the hands of Islamic militant group, Boko Haram, ’Leah Sharibu’, asking the Federal Government to allow interested parties pay the ransom to secure her release. Leah Sharibu The group also alleged that it reached out to be United Nations to intervene, when it got news of plans to kill the hostages in the detention centres of Boko Haram but lamented that no action was taken. In an open letter, titled: ‘Terrorists Execute Air worker in the first ransom demand ever, threaten captive Christian schoolgirl, Leah, next’, by the Managing Partner of US Nigeria Law Group Washington DC, USA, Emmanuel Ogebe, the group said: “We note the unsettling report that Boko Haram (ISWA) executed a female aid worker held captive since March 1. We were only recently alerted that the hostages were about to be executed and to escalate advocacy for their lives. “We reached out to the United Nations but the staff spoken to at UNICEF claimed not to be aware of the situation nor the fact that a UNICEF worker was captured but promised to attend to the matter. “In view of the gravity of the situation, we then reached out directly to the UN Secretary General in New York as we knew lives were in imminent danger. “Thereupon, we disclosed same in the media to put the world on notice of the precarious condition of the hostages. We got an email and a call back trying to determine details of the hostages. We were able to verify some key facts around the attacks and confirmed the UN was, indeed, aware and updated them on a few facts. We received assurances of action. “We are saddened at the unfortunate news of the horrific execution of humanitarian worker and mother of two, 25- year-old Saifura Ahmed who’s frantic messages during the attack at Rann IDP camp alerted the world to what happened that fateful night. “Our research indicates that Saifura had a distressing chat with a friend that they were under attack and had to run to the nearby military base for protection. Her last voice chat indicated the attackers eventually breached the military base where she and others were taking refuge and that she was about to be harmed. Her last message in Hausa was “oh my God they are now coming in – they are going to kill me…” “At USNLG, we take the lives of victims seriously and did everything possible to elevate this issue at the highest levels. We regret that this did not result in a favorable outcome but it was not for lack of trying. “Our condolences go to the family of Saifura, the Red Cross community, aid workers and humanitarians globally. We must remain undaunted in the face of victimization of humanitarians for good to transcend evil as it ultimately shall. “We urge the Red Cross to provide generous death benefits for the family and educational scholarships for her little children including ongoing support to the hostages’ families now. “We urge the UN Secretary General to elevate this hostage issue directly with Gen. Buhari. We are confused at Buhari’s plea to the international community for assistance when it is clear that the resolution lies squarely on Nigeria’s shoulders. “Moreover, as the DSS claimed credit for negotiating the release of 100 Dapchi schoolgirls, we urge a repeat release through channels and mechanisms established.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/09/us-based-nigerian-group-offers-to-pay-leah-sharibus-ransom-2/

Two housekeepers — Favour Sunday and Christopher Ikpam — who allegedly stole their employer’s 10,000 pounds (N4.7 million), on Wednesday appeared in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court. Sunday, 27, and Ikpam 27, who reside with their employer at No 38 Alhaji Jubril Laide St., Magodo, Lagos, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing. The accused, according to Prosecutor Victor Eruada, committed the offences with others still at large on July 24 at their employer’s residence. Eruada said the accused stole the money belonging to the complainant (name withheld) from her bedroom. “Nsonwu came back from London on the said date and kept the money in her bedroom. “The housekeepers, who had been working for the complainant for some years, entered her room, stole the 10,000 pounds (N4.7million) and disappeared. “The accused were apprehended by the police after the complainant reported the case to them,” he said. The offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. They , however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Magistrate, Mrs M.I. Dan-Oni, granted the duo bail in the sum of N2 million each with two responsible sureties each in like sum. She said one of the sureties must be a relation of the accused while other sureties should show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government. Dan-Oni adjourned the case until Oct. 3 for mention. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/09/2-housekeepers-in-court-for-n4-7m-theft/
