Politics#ENDSARS: FFK, Alfred Martins Warn FG Over Deployment Of Soldiers by vanida6(op): 11:50am On Oct 18, 2020
Following the report by the Nigerian army that it would launch ‘exercise Crocodile smile’, an operation that would assist in identifying terrorists in the country, former Aviation and of course PDP chieftain, Femi Fani-Kayode, Sunday warned the Federal government led by President Muhammadu Buhari to jettison the idea of deploying soldiers on the streets.

Disclosing this via his facebook handle, Femi said that the deployment of soldiers especially now that Nigerian youths are protesting against police brutality and extra judicial killings by the operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, would turn the #Endsars movement into #EndNigeria.

His words: “We will not wait before more blood is shed before we speak and before we send out this warning.

We will not wait until there is another mindless and needless massacre and massive shedding of innocent blood by our security forces before we shout out.
We say this today, we say it without fear or favour and we say it for everyone, both friend and foe, to hear loudly and clearly: the determination to use brute force and to kill innocent young men and women in an attempt to crush this protest comes with a very heavy price tag and butchers bill.

The plan to deploy soldiers in our streets and to slaughter #EndSARS protesters in the same way that the Shiite Muslims and IPOB youths were once slaughtered by the military and security forces will be Lt. General Tukur Burutai and President Muhammadu Buhari’s biggest mistake and gravest error.

This must NEVER happen and if it is true that they are seriously contemplating it then they should reconsider and think again!
If for ANY reason whatsoever, they go ahead, it will turn the #Endsars movement into the #EndNigeria movement and no force or power in hell or on earth will be able to resist or stop it.

We warn again: do not unleash the dogs of war and demons of hell on these protestors. Do not kill these INNOCENT, HARMLESS and DEFENCELESS young men and women who have courageously embarked on a LAWFUL and PEACEFUL protest and who are doing nothing more than exercising their constitutional right of freedom of speech and freedom of association.

The consequences of going ahead and doing so, amongst much else, will be that you will end up in the International Court of Criminal Justice and be prosecuted for crimes against humanity and genocide in the not too distant future.

*I say it again, do not bite off more than you can chew, do not beat the drums of armed conflict and do not let slip the dogs of war!

This matter can and must be handled with the utmost maturity and restraint by the Federal Government and in a peaceful, rational and reasonable manner.

These young men and women are fighting for their future: they cannot and will not be intimidated. The threat of mass murder or genocide or its actualisation will not stop them: rather it will embolden them and turn them into martyrs for democracy.

A word is enough for the wise!.”
Suffixing to his postulations, the Archbishop of Lagos, Alfred Martins, Catholic also took out time to advise FG over the deployment of soldiers.

According to him: “Such a measure, if adopted, can only lead to injuries and possible deaths, and an escalation of the protests. It has the tendency of turning the largely peaceful protests into a violent one.

“We therefore urge the federal government to toe the line of engagement in dialogue, listening to the demands of the youth and other well-meaning Nigerians.

“We commend the government for acceding to the demands of the youth. Now, the whole country looks forward to practical steps that would be taken to implement them.

“We believe that a sincere and transparent response to the demands of the young people would go a long way in resolving the present impasse.

PoliticsPresident Umaro Embalo Names Street After Buhari For His ‘Fear Of God’ by vanida6(op): 7:53pm On Oct 16, 2020
Guinea President Names Street After Buhari For His ‘fear Of God’

President Umaro Embalo has expressed appreciation to President Buhari for his support and the fatherly advice he had been receiving from him before and after his inauguration as president of Guinea Bissau.

President Embalo explained that he named a street in Bissau, capital of Guinea Bissau, after President Buhari as a mark of honour and respect he has for the Nigerian leader due to his honesty, discipline and fear of God.

On his part, President Macky Sall of Senegal commended the way and manner Nigeria is supporting the cost of war against insurgency and terrorist activities in all the Lake Chad Basin areas.

The Senegalese leader gave the commendation at the end of a dinner meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari and President Umaro Embalo of Guinea Bissau at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday night.

He also lauded Nigeria for supporting the efforts of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) toward the restoration of peace and constitutional order in Mali.

He said, “What I can say on Mali is that I did know that ECOWAS was very involved since the beginning (of the political crisis). Of course Mali is one of our great countries in ECOWAS.

“As you know, Mali is under occupation by terrorists, even Niger Republic, and I want to salute the great action of Nigeria against Boko Haram and how Nigeria is supporting the cost of war even in all the Lake Chad Basin area.

*“Nigeria is also supporting ECOWAS including Mali, Niger and in Burkina Faso where we have a very serious situation.”

Sall reiterated the commitment of the ECOWAS leaders to continue to support the transitional government in Mali to enable it meet the December 2021 deadline of conducting elections in that country.

The visiting president said: “Although, we had a big political crisis in Mali, but hopefully today everything there is better as we continue to give support to the country’s transitional arrangements.

“So we will help and we will continue to support and we hope by the end of December of next year they will come back to the normal constitutional order and they will have elections and they can come back very strongly with the nations of ECOWAS.

“So, what I can say is today everybody is helping Mali, we lifted the sanctions and ECOWAS has shown a big leadership during this crisis.’’

The Senegalese leader further revealed that they had fruitful bilateral talks with President Buhari bordering on security, economic, COVID-19 as well as regional and global issues.

“I’m not here for summit. I came with my young brother, President Embalo, to pay this visit, to discuss with him (President Buhari), of course, about bilateral relations and also about the region, Africa, about the COVID-19 and all problems we are having in this world.

“So, let me thank President Buhari for hosting us on African traditional way and it’s a big honour for me again to tell him; `thank you President Buhari, thank you for hospitality; thank you also for the officials you brought this evening.’

PoliticsMalpass, World Bank President Commends FG For Removing Fuel Subsidy. by vanida6(op): 9:18am On Oct 15, 2020
Mr David Malpass, President of the World Bank Group, has commended the Federal Government for removing subsidies on petroleum products.

He said this in Washington D. C. on Wednesday at the opening press conference for the World Bank at the ongoing 2020 International Monetary Fund (IMF)/World Bank virtual annual meetings.

Malpass was responding to a question on whether the World Bank saw an opportunity or problem regarding the enormous youth population in Nigeria accompanied with rising unemployment and the burden of COVID-19.

“I compliment Nigeria for tackling the problem of subsidies in the hydrocarbon area.

“By reducing those subsidies and allowing gasoline prices to rise – it is very hard for governments to do that – there are substantial benefits.

“It means that there are fiscal savings, it also means that there are environmental benefits that are large and it allows markets to work better and to allocate resources better.

“So, I think progress is being made in that area and it is valuable,” he added.

On tackling the economic crisis the pandemic posed for Nigeria, he said that the vital steps were to strengthen the health and the education system.

According to him, the governance system and transparency were vital in order to reduce the corruption within the system.
He said that there were opportunities as well.

“I think each country has to confront or has to think about where it wants to be in a post-COVID world that is going to be very different from the pre-COVID world.

“That means a different way of people interacting, hopefully better; a greener way of operating; and an emphasis on health care.

“We have extended the emergency health response to include vaccines and distribution of vaccines for COVID, but it also has the benefit of helping the vaccination programes in other areas and the healthcare outreach in other areas that will be so valuable.”

He, however, said that the first priority was to save lives, people’s health and safety.

He said that would involve procedures like social distancing and masks and proper health care if people contract the virus as well as strengthening of hospital systems.

Malpass said that looking at the next stage, it would be a prolonged downturn for many countries, as there would not be as fast a rebound in tourism, for example, as many would like to have.

He said that there would need to be flexibility in economies, so that people could move to new jobs and positions and the country could be prepared for a post COVID global economy.

“We know it is going to be different from the pre-COVID economy. We do not know exactly how and that will only evolve over time.

“So, having countries preserve some of their core industries and businesses, and then keeping families together.

“We are providing social safety nets to try to help provide cash grants for people,” he said.
In addition to the steps to strengthen the process and create a resilient recovery was climate and lower carbon rebuilding efforts, which, he said, was very important.

Also, on what could be done in the recovery period to strengthen and improve global trade as it related to global Gross Domestic Product (GDP), he said a very beneficial step was trade facilitation.

According to the president, that means trying to keep markets open across borders and where markets are closed and lowering the barriers that occur.

“So, for example, between Benin and Nigeria, there are high tariff barriers on rice, which is distortive and expensive, so finding steps that can be done to facilitate cross border trade and to allow commerce to take place.”

That, according to him, means a safe environment, one that is available to all people, that is not discriminatory in terms of the way it operates.

“I think looking more broadly, it is the commitment by countries around the world, a recognition that commerce is critical to people’s rising living standards.

“We strongly support moves worldwide to allow more trade and to reduce the barriers to trade,” Malpass said.

The 2020 Annual Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank Group holding in Washington D. C. began on Oct. 12 and will end on Dec. 16. (NAN)

Sports'Every Single Day It Shocks Me' - Rashford On Childhood Hunger Fight. by vanida6(op):
The forward was recently awarded an MBE for his work to help underprivileged children across the UK.

Marcus Rashford has spoken out on his fight against childhood hunger, saying he is shocked every day by what he's seen in the UK.

The Manchester United and England striker was recently awarded an MBE in recognition for his campaign to help vulnerable children during the coronavirus pandemic.

Among Rashford's recent accomplishments was his success in getting the UK government to make a U-turn and continue free school mealsfor around 1.3 million disadvantaged children.

*The 22-year-old has also formed a task force with England's food brand giantsto combat child poverty across the country.
Rashford has said that it is "mind-blowing" to see the amount of suffering in the UK, which spurs him on to continue his fight.

"Every single day it shocks me," Rashford said. "It’s not until people see the numbers and I’ve had the chance to visit some of the families I’ve managed to help and hear how it’s affected them and changed their lives.

"It’s just mind-blowing the amount of people who are suffering and the amount of people who don’t know where to get the help.

"There’s a lot of things that would shock a lot of people if they knew the facts about the issue. For me not enough people do know the facts, as I was one of them.

"For me, personally, it's just sad to know it's still going on, and I obviously was in that position when I was younger, and some of the families are in much worse positions than what I was in, so I can only imagine what it feels like for the parents and the children who just want the best for one another, so it's difficult to really say one thing that somebody said to me that sticks out, because for me they're all as important as each other."

Rashford has seen himself thrust into the spotlight over his off-field work as well as his contributions on the pitch for England and Man Utd. Having made his professional debut at 18 for one of the world's best-known clubs, Rashford said he has become comfortable with the limelight.

"I think playing for United and England at a young age, it helped me mature a lot quicker than I would’ve expected to," Rashford said.

"I’m grateful for those opportunities and very happy I was put in those positions. I do feel like I’ve matured a lot. I feel like I’m free to speak on things I feel strongly about. It’s because of those experiences in the past that make me feel so comfortable doing that."

PoliticsEndSARS: Oyo Releases ₦1 Million Each To Families Of Isiaka, Other Slain Victims by vanida6(op): 9:11pm On Oct 13, 2020
By Adeola Badru

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Tuesday, paid a condolence visit to the family of deceased Jimoh Isiaka and two other victims of the violence that erupted during the ENDSARS protests.

Makinde was accompanied by top government functionaries, the Speaker, Oyo state Hosue of Assembly, Mr Adebo Ogundoyin, and some lawmakers.

He explained that beyond the EndSARS protest, most Nigerians have become frustrated over prevailing harsh economic reality in the country and if government fail to address youth idleness with gainful employment there might be a future disaster
The governor also noted that while his government was not against peaceful protest,

protesters must be responsible enough to voice their concerns as the state government would work more at ensuring youths in the state were meaningfully engaged.

Makinde also ordered the immediate release of N100 million for the renovation of Soun of Ogbomoso’s palace, following the violence that erupted in Ogbomoso axis of the state, weekend, as a result of the ENDSARS protest, which led to the destruction of property of Oba Jimoh Oyewumi, Ajagungbade’s palace.

This is as the governor, also ordered the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters in the state, Chief Bayo Lawal and the Caretaker Chairman, Ogbomoso North Local Government Council to do an assessment and documentation of the vandalised parts of the palace as well as vehicles to determine what would be repaired and those to be replaced.

*While appealing to the Soun to forgive the perpetrators, Governor Makinde, who described the protesters as the monarch’s children assures that the government would meaningfully engage the youths population to douse the tension and prevent a possible recall.

In his response, the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Oyewunmi appreciated the visit and urged the government to wake up to it numerous responsibilities
The monarch also assured that the traditional institution would continue to play its role in supporting the government for a better society.

Vanguard recalled that the angry youths destroyed properties worth millions of naira in the main palace of the monarch, ransacked and destroyed properties in an adjacent building to the Soun’s palace, popularly known as Oba Oladunni hall, as well as about ten vehicles damaged.

The governor who was received by the Secretary to the monarch, Mr Toyin Ajamu was also conducted round the palace to see the degree of damages done to the palace.

In the same vein, Makinde who released N1 million to each of the families of slain victims of the protest urged them to take the untimely demise of their kids as an act of God.

The deceased were Isiaka Jimoh, Taiwo Adeoye and Moshood Ganiyu.

The governor also visited Ogbomoso Area Police Command, where he held a brief close-door meeting with the officer in charge.
