The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has shut down seven examination centres across Bayelsa State for violating its rules and regulations for examination.

According to available data, the closure of the centres leaves Bayelsa state with only four centres to cater for about 24,000 candidates.

The state coordinator of JAMB, Abdusalam Mohammed, who made this known during a call on the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Yenagoa, explained that some of the examination centres were delisted for duplicating the Virtual Private Network (VPN) of their router.

Others were delisted for charging unsuspecting candidates outrageous sums of money during registration.

His words, “Initially Bayelsa had eleven examination centres, and so far seven out of this number have been delisted from our platform for various infractions. The owners of some of these centres tampered with the VPN of our router. And that is a very big offence.

“They duplicated the VPN by moving the router from one location to another location where they did whatever they liked, which is a very big offence.

“Others were overcharging candidates. During registration, we sent out a monitoring team out and they came back with the report that candidates were charged N5,000 for a service that should ordinarily cost N2, 500.”
Mohammed also gave insight into the level of preparedness of the board to conduct examination as coronavirus continues to spread saying, “even before the lockdown was lifted, we had started training our staff on how to attend to candidates. We have also embarked on sensitisation of candidates and provided personal prevention equipment.

*“Also, In order to reduce the crowd at our office during registration, we have introduced what we call appointment for candidates. This means that candidates can only come to us when they have an appointment. The intention is to reduce body contact between staff and candidates.

“Before coronavirus, we used to do what is called thumb printing for candidates during registration but that has been stopped in order not to spread the virus. What we now do is that a One-Time Password (OTP) is sent to the candidate. That will now verify the candidate as the original owner of that particular application.

“In the past, it was difficult to have 20,000 candidates for JAMB but this year the number has sky rocketed to over 24,000 candidates, meaning there is an improvement in the enrolment of students in Bayelsa. However, in Bayelsa awareness on our activities is low, so that is why we have come to visit you.”

Responding, the chairman of NUJ, Comrade Samuel Numonengi, frowned at the activities of the operators of the examination centres delisted, saying that actions do not mean well for the future of Bayelsa State.

He said: “we cannot stand people jeopardizing the future of our children in Bayelsa State. So it is on this note I want to join you to condemn their actions and encourage parents and candidates to stand up against any form of infraction perpetrated by these individuals that have questionable character.

“Concerning the issue of awareness, in the past JAMB used to have this strong synergy with journalists in the state but today that relationship is weak. So I want to encourage you to build that synergy to see how we can educate our people.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been ruled out of Portugal's clash with Swedenafter testing positive for Covid-19.

The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed the news in an official statementon Tuesday, which reads: "Cristiano Ronaldo was released from training with the national team after a positive test for Covid-19, so he will not face Sweden.

Hopes of parents to have their children return to schools in the Federal Capital Territory FCT after a seven-month COVID-19 induced hiatus were on Monday dashed following the decision of teachers to chase their pupils home.

The teachers under the aegis of the FCT Council of the Nigeria Union of Teachers NUT said Area Council Chairmen in the territory have refused to implement the national minimum wage as well as payment of arrears.

When Vanguard visited the LEA Primary School Kubwa which also houses the Junior Secondary School, Kubwa, the pupils had been chased out of their classrooms from as early as 8am. Only students of the junior secondary school were allowed in, as secondary school teachers had been paid by the FCT Administration.

Earlier in September, Chairman of the Union, Stephen Knabayi had directed members not to resume work whenever schools were reopened.

*He said while the Federal Capital Territory Administration FCTA has commenced the payment of the new minimum wage, the six Area Councils in the territory who are saddled with the payment of primary school teachers have refused to budge.

The FCTA had on October 8 slated the reopening of schools in the territory for Monday, October 12, announcing the cancellation of Third Term and equally warning private schools against demanding fees for the cancelled term.
FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello who gave the directives at stakeholders meeting in Abuja, however, added that all boarding schools would be reopened a day earlier.

There are indications that Nigeria’s poverty level may have further deteriorated as the latest reports of the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association, NECA, shows a 10 percentage point rise in the number of the extreme poor in the country against the 2019 report of the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS.

NECA’s report says that the number of citizens in extreme poverty now stands at an estimated 102 million, representing 50 per cent of the Nigeria’s estimated population of about 205 million, as against the 40 per cent reported by NBS in October last year.

*This comes at the backdrop of the World Bank forecast that global extreme poverty is expected to rise in 2020 for the first time in over 20 years as the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic compounds the forces of conflict and climate change, which were already slowing down progress in poverty reduction efforts around the world.

"Financial Vanguard’s findings from the data obtained from NECA revealed that the total number of people living in extreme poverty in Nigeria now stands at 15 percent of the total number of people living in extreme poverty world-wide.

"In the latest annual report of NECA, its Acting President, Taiwo Adeniyi, said: “With COVID-19, the figure could only be imagined. It is practically impossible to separate unemployment from poverty. The longer people stay out of employment or any reasonable means of income, the higher the rate of poverty.

“Two years after it was reported that Nigeria had surpassed India as the nation with the highest number of people living in extreme poverty across the world, the country’s poverty ranking continues to surge.”

*Adeniyi stated further: “The World Poverty Clock, a web tool based on World Data Lab’s global poverty model, estimated in June 2018 that 86.9 million Nigerians are living on less than $1.90 a day. That number has increased by over 15 million in the past two years, according to new figures published by World Data Lab on May 26, 2020.”

*The NBS in a report about poverty and inequality from September 2018 to October 2019, had said 40 per cent of people in the continent’s most populous country live below its poverty line of N137,430 ($381.75) a year. It said that represents 82.9 million people.

“In Nigeria, 40.1 per cent of total population were classified as poor. In other words, on average, four out of 10 individuals in Nigeria has real per capita expenditures below N137,430 ($352) per year,” it added.

The NBS said it did not include Borno, the state worst hit by the decade-long Boko Haram armed uprising, because many areas there were not safe to reach.
According to the report, 52 per cent of people in rural areas live in poverty, compared with 18 per cent in urban parts of the country.
It stated: “The highest poverty levels were in the northwest state of Sokoto, where 87.7 per cent of people live under the poverty line compared with 4.5 per cent in commercial hub Lagos state, which had the lowest rate.”

World Bank’s universal perspective
The World Bank noted that poverty reduction has suffered its worst setback in decades, after nearly a quarter century of steady global declines in extreme poverty.

Specifically, the World Bank estimated that the pandemic would push an additional 88 million to 115 million people into extreme poverty this year, with the total rising to as many as 150 million by 2021, depending on the severity of the economic contraction.

It stated this in its biennial ‘Poverty and Shared Prosperity Report,’ released ahead of the 2020 virtual Annual Meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The bank had in June, predicted that there would be 95.7 million Nigerians living below the poverty line by 2022, due to the impact of the virus.

It defined extreme poverty as living on less than $1.90 a day, adding that it was likely to affect between 9.1 per cent and 9.4 per cent of the world’s population in 2020.

The report also finds that “many of the new poor will be in countries that already have high poverty rates. A number of middle-income countries will see significant numbers of people slip below the extreme poverty line. About 82 per cent of the total will be in middle-income countries, the report estimates.”

“We want President Muhammadu Buhari to speak directly to us. We want justice for people that were murdered, raped and assaulted.

“We want the SARS operatives responsible brought to book and at the end of the day, we don’t want them redeployed to other units. We want them gone,” she said.

In a series of tweets on Friday, the president assured Nigerians of his determination to end police brutality and bring “erring personnel to justice”.
Buhari said his administration’s “determination to reform the police should never be in doubt”, and sued for calm.

He blamed the bad reputation of SARS on some bad apples, noting that most police officers were committed to protecting Nigerians.

Another leader of the protest, Peter Johnson, reiterated that there was no transparency in the reported dissolution of the outfit

“They gave us a very generic message. I, personally, feel like we need to see actual results.
“We need to see a plan of where the operatives are going because people are still going to die,” he said.

Addressing other protesters, ‘Papi’ Ojo said he relocated to the U.S. at the age of 11 and was afraid to visit home because he had lost two uncles to SARS.
However, the 23-year-old said the unity and courage displayed by Nigerians in the protest had given him the strength to return and make a change.

“As I speak, I am still afraid, but I can’t keep living in fear any more because I have relations back home calling me to help.

“So, I am begging everyone here that is afraid like me to stand up and help in whatever way we can to effect the desired change back home,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some of the protesters took turns to narrate their personal experiences or those of their family members in the hands of SARS.
Being Sunday, the consulate was closed and no official was around to address the protesters.

The Consul General of Nigeria in New York, Mr Benaoyagha Okoyen, did not answer the phone when NAN called to get his comments.

He had also not replied text messages sent to him as of the time of filing this report.

Luis Suarez has hit out at Barcelona's board for how they handled his departure, saying he only discovered he wasn't in the club's plans when he saw the news in media reports.

“We have [Eden] Hazard, I always said that Hazard easily can be there but it's about are you motivated to be the best? And [Romelu] Lukaku who has been amazing, he has jumped up the last season.
