French leader Emmanuel Macron will on Tuesday visit a nightclub founded by Nigerian music legend Fela Kuti, becoming the first “real president” to enter a venue synonymous with marijuana smoke, sexy backup dancers and protest music.



The New Afrika Shrine located in the teeming Lagos district of Ikeja replaced Fela Kuti’s original club that burnt down in 1977, but for millions of fans it still represents the original Shrine built by the musical maverick.

“The Shrine is a must-see place,” said Olivier Laouchez, the head of the TRACE media and entertainment group and organiser of the event Macron will attend, adding that Lagos is “Africa’s cultural capital”.

The evening will feature concerts, fashion shows by leading African designers and a meeting with stars from Nigeria’s booming Nollywood film industry.

Lagos is also giving Johannesburg — the other African cultural hotspot — a run for its money in the art world with its annual Art X event.

“There is clearly something abuzz in Lagos, with auctions mushrooming, and this will explode,” said contemporary art specialist Marie-Cecile Zinsou, who is based in neighbouring Benin.

“The idea is to show the richness and diversity of African cultures,” said Laouchez.

“Europe does not know Africa or at least its cultural dimension.”

Macron, who is visiting the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott to attend an African Union summit on Sunday, will go on to Nigeria’s capital Abuja for talks with his counterpart Muhammadu Buhari on security and terrorism, before coming to Lagos, a vibrant megapolis of 20 million people.

“It was the French who organised Fela’s first European tour in 1981,” he said.

“Then his sons Femi and Seun launched their international careers in France.”

The shrine is a big hall, painted brown and yellow, with patterns of green, red and black, suggesting African symbolism.

Laouchez joked that organising the event was no cakewalk, saying: “It requires great organisation because there are frequent power cuts and you have to ensure that the ceiling fans do not fall on the heads of guests… but it’s exciting.”

“Musically speaking, the new Nigerian Afrobeat movement is global,” he added, pointing to stars such as Davido, Wizkid and Mr Eazi.

FUPRE to commence production of vehicle parts

WARRI – THE Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun, FUPRE, is set to commence production of vehicle partss which will place the country on its path to development.

Prof. Akaehomen.O. Akii Ibhadode, Vice Chancellor of the institution revealed this on Wednesday during a press briefing with Journalists.
He also commended President Muhammadu Buhari for assenting to the Bill establishing the Institution into law.

Prof. Ibhadode shortly after being endowed as the occupier of Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC’s Professorial Chair in Light Weight Automobile Engine Development disclosed that the school is set to pioneer vehicular engines.

“The University is heartily indebted to Mr. President, Muhammadu Buhari that after ten years the University Bill was passed and signed under his guide. We sincerely appreciate him. We graciously commend the commitment of every member of the National Assembly for their critical roles in passing the bill and seeing to it being assented.”

Prof. Ibhadode stated that the inauguration of the Shell Professorial Chair for Light Weight Automobile Engine Development has placed the university in the front line as a global centre for research and excellence.

He noted that the professorial chair was instituted in October 2016 to develop local capacities for automobile engines designed and manufactured through structured research and development activities.

The VC also highlighted the institution’s challenges to include poor funding, non-participation of stakeholders and poor infrastructures.

Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) has threatened to resume strike over failure of the Nigerian government to honour the agreement earlier reached with the union in September.

A meeting of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the three non- teaching staff in the universities comprising SSANU, non Academic Staff Union (NASU) and NAAT has been fixed for next Tuesday to fix a day to commence the action.

SSANU National President and Chairman of JAC, Comrade Samson Chijioke Ugwoke, stated this yesterday while speaking at the 32nd National Executive Council (NEC), meeting at University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Ugwoke said that the Union is not intimidated by the plan by the federal government to implement the no work, no pay policy, stressing that “it will be morally and legally wrong if the government should go contrary to the agreement it entered into with the association and expect SSANU not to react”.
He also condemned the continuous victimisation of some of its members by the authorities of University of Abuja and the alleged plan to hand over staff school of the University to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), State Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB).

Ugwoke lamented that that the federal government has failed to implement all the agreements it entered into with the union before the industrial dispute declared by it was called off.
He said: “We had issues like earned allowances, short falls in salary, staff schools matter, non- implementation of the judgment of the National Industrial Court which we got against the federal government to recall all teachers back to their offices etc, we had an MoU with the federal government in January after a one week warning strike.

“From January to September, the federal government did not do anything as regards the MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) signed in January and that necessitated our second strike which was indefinite.
“We entered into an MoU on salary shortfalls, a development that has never happened before in the university system where staff are paid fractional salaries.

“We objected to that and the federal government promised the money. Information reaching me shows that up till now, not all the universities have received the shortfall.”

Team FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF PETROLEUM RESOURCES EFFURUN ( FUPRE ) came out 2nd place in the Gasoline Prototype category 'Energy Efficiency Award' and in the 'Technical Innovation Award.'

It wasn't easy, but they scaled through and maintained their position in Africa by improving their previous record of energy efficiency.

The leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students - Joint Campus Committee DTS Axis under the watch of her Chairman Comr Ogonegbu Precious today 18th October 2017, pays a visitation to the office of the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Entertainment(Sebastine OKOH) in his office at Asaba Delta State.
The delegation which was led by the association vice chairman Comr Uzuazor Gift Zuaric, was basically on the partnership with office of the SA entertainment to promote peace, unity and celebrate the power of oneness despite the political party or ethnic group.
The office of the EA entertainment in collaboration with "DELTA ENTERTAINERS" whom believe in One Delta, One People, One Stage present "DELTA UNITY CONCERT 2017".
While discussing, the EA entertainment to the governor note that the only way of promoting peace and unity in the state is by organizing a unity concert, where by all stakeholders will be involved irrespective of the political party or ethnic group. Speaking further, he said the concert is gear in uniting ourselves and we are to preach unity through entertainment.
The Director of Action and Mobilization of NANS DTS axis Dio Oghale Emeka Rex, while responding, gave thanks to the EA entertainment who acknowledge that in uniting a nation or a state the student body are highly needed. While responding, Dio Oghale Emeka Rex said it is a welcome development and the leadership of NANS JCC DTS axis are very in support of the concert as it is targeted toward promoting unity, peace and oneness among Deltans irrespective of the political party or ethnic group, noting that when a nation is peaceful, it pave way for development and other good things.
The concert which is to take place on the 27th of October 2017, at the Dome Event Center in Asaba is free for everyone as there is no entrance fee attached to it, more also the Chairman, Planning Committee on Delta Unity Concert (Frank D Don), also stated that there will be a peace walk starting from Tuesday 24th and Wednesday 25th October around Asaba and Warri axis of the state, saying the peace walk is aimed in sensitising our people on the need to embrace unity.
In conclusion, the student union government President of Delta State University Abraka (Comr Igbuku Mamus Christain) gave vote of thanks to the EA entertainment and again appreciate him for his initiative and reaffirm him that the students leadership in the state are solidly behind him and are ready and happy in partnering with him in promoting peace, unity and celebrate oneness among Deltans as we are all lover of peace.
He concluded.
