Education / Quick Tips For Jamb English Questions by Vanmatrix(m): 1:49pm On Oct 04, 2017
Just a little FYI for your examination.

Here are some quick tips you should have in mind when you are about to write your Jamb English paper.

Gerunds (-ing verbs)

1. Occur as subject/object of a verb
E.g.

1. Playing lawn tennis was one of his hobby.
2. The doctor advised him to stop
smoking.
3. Eating regularly keeps you healthy.
2. Preceded by possessive adjective (my, his, her) or possessive noun.
1. I didn't understand his behaving like that.
2. Please excuse my going to bed.
3. Prevent and Stop + Object + Gerund
1. I prevented him from going.
4. Make and Had better without to
1. The man made John confess.
2. I thought I'd warn you.
Emphatic Stress
In emphatic stress, the answer is usually the option without the stress word (word in caps) .

E.g.

Lambusa TOOK OFF the wig.

(a) did Lambusa take of the wig?

(b) who took off the wig?

(c) what did Lambusa do.

Ans= C (without take/took off).
Use of Apostophe [']

['s] is added to:

1. Singular noun, (boy's car).

2. Last part of compound/group names (brothers-in-law's, mother-in-law's, May & Baker's, new year's day).

3. Plural nouns that don't end with (s) (children's clinic, women's talk).

4. Possessive indefinite pronons (one's, somebody else's, someone else's).

5. Noun that end in (s) e.g. Charles's, Jos's, James's - except ancient names - Jesus', Moses' Achimedes'.

6. Only ['] for plural words (boys' cars). It's wrong to add apostrophe in yours, his, hers, ours, theirs.

1. That car of his (not that his car) ,

2. This land is theirs (not this land is theirs')

3. yours faithfully.
Use Of "On"
For bed - relaxing, time - exact (right on time), flat surface, transport, slap-face.
Use Of "In"
enclosed place, large/popular city, clothes on, slap - metaphor, time - early/a bit late, bed - asleep, arm chairs, gunshot/head, begining / end of story.
Use Of "At"
place seen as point of target/meeting, when a place is not final destination, specific time, small city or place in a big city, night - regular action, precided at, villages, outskirts & satelite houses.
Concord

1. Collective nouns (congregation) & Plural words like any, everybody, each, everything, everyone takes singular verbs. E.g Everybody (is) here.

2. Subjects joined with (and) takes plural verbs except food and units of currencies which takes singular verbs.
the man & his wife (are) here.
rice and stew (is) sweet.

3. When joined by (or), it is determined by the subject after (or).
The boys or the girl (is) to blame.
The girl or the boys (are) to blame.
Verbs of phrases such as "with, as well as, together with, in addition to, in company of, etc" is determined by the first subject.

E.g. The man with his wife (is) present.

Subjunctive
it is about time, it's high time, as if, i wish, it's time, i'd rather, if only, suppose - uses past tense for present & future actions but past perfect tense for past actions. (1) It's high time we (left) here. (2) her mother said, "i would rather you (cooked) the food. When (to) is added to subjunctive, it remains in present tense.
Sentence Detachment
Sentences are detached by removing relative pronouns (who, whom, that, whose, which) & the words before the gap if the relative pronouns appear after the gap.

E.g.

1. It was __ who fought the civil war [they/them/theirs]. When who and It was is removed. We have: (They) fought the civil war.

2. You who__ convicted should appear. [are/is/was] When who is removed. We have: You (are) convicted.
Sentences Order
Use DO-SI-SHA-CPOMN-DEH
DO - Determiners
SI - Size
SHA - Shape
C - Color
P - Participle
O - Origin
M - Material
N - noun adjective
DE - Denominal
H - Head

Syllabic Stress
Di(2)syllabic Nouns - stressed at First syllable. (IMport)
Disyllabic Verbs - stressed at last (2nd) syllable. (imPORT)
Disyllabic words ending with 2 or more consonants are stressed at 2nd syllable. (resPECT).

Disyllabic words with long vowels or diphthong at the 2nd syllable are stressed at the 2nd syllable. (reMARK, misLEAD)
Schwa vowel/ə/ is never stressed. Disyllabic words starting with schwa are stressed at last syllable (adVICE,aBOVE) & vice versa. Thus disyllabic words ending with schwa (ter, tor, ger, ler, mer, per, ber, zor, vor, yer) are stressed at first syllable (BIGger, DREAmer).
Poly(more than 2)syllabic words ending with (tal, tic, ion, ian) are stressed at 2nd syllable counting from the ending. (EduCAtion).
Polysyllabic words ending with (ate, ity, ify, phy, logy, gamy, tany, cal, nal, tomy, ive, ey, ry) are stressed at the 3rd syllable from the end. (producTIvity, geoLOgical,PROmigate, deMOcracy).
That's all for Syllabic stress.

Wish you success. Now go crush that exam.

Education / Fupre Sug V.p Independence Day Speech by Vanmatrix(m): 7:33am On Oct 01, 2017
The student union vice president in The FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF PETROLEUM RESOURCES EFFURUN in person of comr Ojinika Azubuike Progress. gave an independence day speech which he directed to the Nigerians as a word of hope :

INDEPENDENCE DAY SPEECH
I am very pleased and proud to celebrate with all citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on her 57th year of Independence. I welcome you all and hope that you feel as proud as I do to be part of this great nation, I pray the Almighty God keep us to celebrate more of our great country and above all keep us united as a country (AMEN).
Cerebrating such memorable day without remembering the fallen heroes who had struggled to ensure we become an independent nation as on the 1st of October 1960 would be incomplete. Foremost Nigerians like OBAFEMI AWOLOWO , NNAMDI AZIKIWE , TAFAWA BALEWA and ANTHONY ENAHORO were some nationalist who fought for the country’s Independence .
The present Administration of The Federal Republic of Nigeria led by president Muhammadu Buhari was sworn into office May 29th 2015 with high feelings from all citizens who had believed that CHANGE has come to stay. As at the present, the present Administration has completed Democratic years with some visible changes.
In aspect of Education the present government has done well and still remains the best amongst all to tackle the challenge of ASUU within a month which has been the shortest for years.
Nigeria have been one of the most difficult black nation to survive in, due to the dwindling and unstable economy which I believe is caused by our sole dependence on crude oil and this led to the recent recession in the country . I believe the present administration is working tirelessly to make sure recession is eradicated from the country by Introducing Transformation Agenda aimed at changing the phase of the economy this include Agriculture, mining , Train Transportation and so on, this Initiative will also pave way for the unemployed.
In the war of corruption we are winning. The presidency and its security team have done a very good job to make sure this country stands as one. Today terrorism for no just cause had been reduced to the minimum in our nation. The strides achieved in the successful rescuing of bokoharam victims and reclaiming of sized territories is wonderful. In the case of IPOB the government is trying to make sure we’re not divided and I want the Nigerian government to use Strategic plans not killing of innocent ones to solve the problem on ground. I urge we all to buy into the vision of unity because a nation divided cannot stand. This present administration has also tackled the problem of kidnapping in the country with great intelligence and it has been of help to reduce this act.
NIGERIA is our mother land and we are it’s citizen we should always be ready to save it from people who want to destroy it. It is our responsibility to lead our country ahead, and make our nation the best in Africa and the world at large.
Finally, I encourage Nigerians to put on the armor of faith, patience and endurance. for I believe in this great nation, we are at the brink of making history and together we shall achieve.
GOD BLESS NIGERIA
GOD BLESS PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI

Romance / Teacher Dies An Car Crash While Having Sex by Vanmatrix(m): 7:32am On Jun 25, 2017
An English teacher, John Malone, has died in a horror car crash in Thailand while having sex on the back seat.
Malone, who hails from Ireland was travelling in a speeding black Suzuki when it lost control and hit a concrete post.

Horrific CCTV shows the car spinning several times as sparks fly and glass smashes, before it comes to a stop further down the road in Chiang Rai, Thailand.

39-yr-old Malone was pulled half-naked from the wreckage having been on the backseat with a naked Thai woman found in the car.

Rescuers arrived and pulled out Malone wearing just a small blue t-shirt from the car unconscious while a naked Thai woman was on the back passenger seat. Neither had seat belts on.

The male driver – who was clothed – and the female front seat passenger who were both Thai were treated at Kasemrad Sriburin General Hospital.
According to DAILY MAIL, the volunteer rescue foundation – Siam Ruam – which attended to the crash said police authorities were now investigating.
A spokesman for the foundation said today: ‘One foreign man died in the crash. The staff helped to bring out the bodies and give first aid.

“This was a black Suziki Swift and it was speeding.
“We think the man was having sex in the the car.
“There were three Thai people and one foreign man.

“They were injured and the driver was unconscious but only the man died.
“How it happened exactly we do not know yet. From the scene we know that the two passengers did not have clothes on. The man had a small t-shirt.
“We don’t know how the driver crashed. We have not been able to investigate with him yet.”

The rescue foundation said that all three of the other people involved in the crash were Thai and that John, originally from County Longford, was the only foreigner.
The driver and the front seat passenger are in a serious condition.

Malone had been working for a number of years as a teacher at ‘The Learning Center’ in Chiang Rai, a small city in northern Thailand on the border with Laos and Myanmar.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs in Ireland confirmed that they are aware of the incident and are ‘providing consular assistance’.

It could be recalled that a few days ago, a
physical education teacher and his girlfriend died after their off road vehicle rolled into a lake while they were having sex.

Crime / Abandoned, Hungry, We Are Pregnant For Unknown Men — Teenage Girls. ( Photo) by Vanmatrix(m): 7:56am On Jun 18, 2017
Janet, Ibitam and Rose have one thing in common: They are teenage inmates at the Internally Displaced Persons, IDP, camp in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State but heavily pregnant.

Some of the camp inmates
Janet is 13 and eight months pregnant, Ibitam is 14 and seven months pregnant while Rose,15, is carrying eight months old pregnancy. Meanwhile all three girls do not know who got them pregnant and do not know where their next meal will come from. .

This is a familiar tale among girls in the Bakassi IDP camp who are daily faced with the
drudgery of living in dire lack and diseases. They submit to sex with men and boys who take advantage of their situation and hand them peanuts which can hardly feed them and thereafter abandon them to their fate.

Though the teenage girls would have chosen a path that would have guaranteed them a better future by attending school, getting jobs and thereafter marrying husbands in the city, here they are, languishing in IDP camp.
The ceding of Bakassi Peninsula, in compliance with the International Court of Justice, ICJ, ruling has sentenced the natives of the Peninsula into a cruel fate and they are going through life in pain.

“I would have loved to go to school even up to the university but how can I with no money and no work and no house to live in? We are staying here and hoping that, one day, things will get better,” Janet, whose parents died during an alleged Cameroon gendarmes’ attack on their village, said.

Ibitam has the same story. She stopped schooling in primary three in their Efut Obot village before they were forced out and, since then, she has not been able to afford to attend the primary school at Akwa Ikot Eyo, where their camp is situated.

“I was in primary three in our village school and, since we came here, I have not had money to buy uniform and books to attend the school here even as we live in one of the buildings of the school,” the pregnant teenager said, sobbing
The Bakassi IDPs, who are primarily fishermen, had been ejected from their ancestral land at Efut Obot villages located at the Bakassi Peninsula after Cameroon took over the peninsula and are now living in a camp located in the community primary school at Akwa Ikot Eyo in Akpabuyo Local Government Area .

They have no jobs because, as fishermen, they no longer have access to the sea and are only provided food and medical supplies by Cross River State government, public -spirited individuals and organisations. Oftentimes, according to the IDP camp inmates, the food is hardly enough and, sometimes, for several months, nothing comes their way in form of aid, consequently, many women, youths and men among men roam around the area looking for assistance. They take to menial jobs like cutting the grass or weeding the farms of their hosts, sell bean cake and buns to earn peanuts to keep body and soul together.

When Sunday Vanguard visited the camp last week, many of the IDPs were seen sleeping on mats on the floor of the classrooms where they are quartered or sitting in groups at the basement of the hall and as our car came to a halt in front of the school block, many of them thought an organisation had showed up to provide them some items of succor. They were, however, disappointed when they saw a journalist with a camera and a recorder to once again hear and record stories they have narrated for the umpteenth time.

“We have been here since 2011 when Cameroon killed many of our people and forcefully ejected us from our villages across the river”, Okon Ene, the Camp Coordinator said.

Ene said many of the IDPs, especially pregnant women, the aged and children, have died from hunger and diseases while some, unable to bear the situation at the camp, simply went away and never heard from again.

“We are over 2,000 here now; our trade is fishing and our being away from the sea means death because there is nothing we can do on land. That is why so many people, particularly pregnant women, children and the aged have died because of hunger and diseases”.
He said the Cross River State government has been doing so much to provide succor to them in form of occasional supply of food and medicine, saying, however, that it is not enough, as their children are not going to school because they cannot afford the fees and transport fares for them to move from the camp to secondary schools located far away.
In one of his visits to the camp, Governor Ben Ayade had openly betrayed emotions when he wept and called on the Federal Government and the international community to come to the aid of the IDPs.

In March, Ayade literally moved the Government House to the place to celebrate his 49th birthday and reiterated his call for assistance for the IDPs
Bakassi refugees

Etiyin Etim Okon Edet, the paramount ruler of Bakassi and Chairman of Cross River State Traditional Rulers Council told Sunday Vanguard that former President Olusegun Obasanjo ceded the Bakassi Peninsula without making adequate plans for the resettlement of the people, thereby exposing them to the untold suffering they have undergone for several years now.

Edet said the delay in the implementation of the 2013 report of the Presidential Committee on the Plight of the Displaced Bakassi People was unfair to the people.
“They built houses in Ikang which is in Akpabuyo and told us they are meant for us but that is not part of Bakassi and the Akpabuyo people have since taken over the houses and even the one they gave to me I have the keys but cannot access it because someone else lives there”, he lamented.

He said the IDPs had made several presentations to government and its agencies on how to successfully resettle them, saying the government sticks to its own ideas which often times do not produce the right results.

“Obasanjo, who is the main actor during the ceding, is still alive and made a lot of promises to us prior to the ceding and we thought he would fulfill them but he did not. He met with us severally at the Aso Rock Villa and spoke to us passionately as the father of the nation which gave us the assurance that the nation would do something reasonable for the people of Bakassi but, up till now, we have seen nothing”, the monarch stated.

According to him, the former President promised that they would be allowed to relocate to any place of their choice with all their institutions but they were never given that choice. Edet said the people would have preferred Tom Short Island as their resettlement place which is within the confines of Bakassi where they can vote and build their own political and traditional institutions but the government decided to settle them in Ikang, Akpabuyo where their votes during elections are usually added to those of Akpabuyo., thereby depriving them of their voice and civic right.

“Perhaps he (Obasanjo) had some other intentions which were not known to us that if he gave out Bakassi, those benefits that would accrue to him but eventually none of those things came to fruition and he decided to dump us by the way side”, he stated .
During last week’s visit of Acting President Yemi Osinbajo to Cross River State, the plight of the IDPs was one of the complaints tabled before him. This was his response:

“The ceding of Bakkasi as a result of the judgement of the ICJ is a development that we all consider a loss. But the President strongly believes that while we ruminate over the legal issues, we must not allow Nigerian citizens in Ikang and elsewhere to suffer.

“The Federal Government will certainly do more and engage more with the displaced in Bakassi. This is our duty and our commitment. We will also thoroughly investigate the issues you have raised on the relationship between the military, the militants and the people of Bakassi”.

A bloody clash between two rival gang (cult) groups has claimed the lives of at least 14 persons at Sime community in Tai Local Council of Rivers State.
Similarly, one person was also feared dead in Oyigbo Council following a clash between farmers and suspected Fulani herdsmen.

Scores of gun-wielding youths said to be members of a cult group had late Thursday night invaded Sime community, where they carried out a fierce bloody reprisal attack on members of a rival group.
The Guardian gathered that about a fortnight ago, members of one of the rival cult groups had killed members of an entire family in circumstances still shrouded in mystery.
A source, who pleaded anonymity, claimed that Thursday night killing was in reprisal attack to avenge those killed a fortnight ago.
i
“They came for a reprisal attack. Some family members were wiped out about a fortnight ago in a very gruesome manner. The incident has created palpable fear in Sime ever since.
“So, it was not really a surprise when this attack that claimed the lives of persons took place. The groups involved in the clash are Deybam and Deywell,” he said.
It was gathered that after the fierce gun duel that ensued, no fewer than 14 persons were killed.
The two cult groups have for a while been engaged in supremacy tussle in the area.
The incident has forced many
apprehensive residents to desert Sime to neighbouring communities amid fears of a possible retaliatory attack.
The Caretaker Committee Chairman of Tai Council, Bob Uelor Nkue, confirmed the dastardly act.
i
He corroborated community sources which claimed that cult groups were responsible for the horrid bloodletting.
Also, Chairman of Oyigbo Council, Chisom Gbali, who confirmed the incident, said suspected farmers killed the herdsman yesterday.
He has, therefore, called on security agencies to improve security in the area, following rumours that the herdsmen were planning a reprisal attack on the local farmers.
Unknown gunmen have also raided Asarama-Toru fishing settlement in Andoni Council and abducted six persons, resulting in the death of scores.
Some residents who fled the community are yet to be accounted for.
i
The Community Development Committee Chairman, Jephtha Blessing, said two speedboats loaded with gunmen stormed the community yesterday afternoon and started shooting sporadically into the air.
He added that amid the pandemonium caused by the intense shooting, scores of men, women and children had to run into the swamp forest to avoid being caught in the gunfire. Some were said to have jumped into the sea to escape being killed by the intruders.
Blessing explained that after ransacking the fishing settlement, the gunmen, whose mission remained unknown, abducted six persons and took them to an unknown destination.
i
As at press time, he said scores of persons who either ran into the forest or jumped into sea could not be accounted for, fuelling concerns that they may have drowned in the swamp or sea.
“We are calling on the Rivers State Governor, even the Andoni Council chairman to come to our aid.
This is not the first time gunmen are invading our community.
“We have written to the Area Commander in Bori and the Caretaker Committee chairman of Andoni for help. We cannot account for our men, women and children after this attack,” he lamented.
i
Efforts to reach to the state Command Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, were fruitless.
