EPISODE 2

'Natasha, the Human is awake,' A strange voice announced as soon as I regained consciousness.

I opened my eyes slowly, and saw nothing at all. Not even the tip of my nose. I was thrown into a momentary confusion. Are my eyes really open or still closed or have I gone blind?

'Far from it Human. You aren't blind,' the strange voice allayed my fear. 'It's just that your human eyes are of little use here. Welcome to the Underworld by the way.'

'Who are you?' I meant to ask because I was quite sure this voice didn't quite sound like that of the Nymph I had spoken with earlier.

I opened my mouth to speak but something very strong held my lips clenched, thereby muffling my question into a meaningless grunt.

I tried moving my hands but I found out that they were tied to the back of the clumsy chair I was sitting on.

Is this some kind of interrogation room or what? And Where the hell is that Nymph that brought me here?

After several moments of silence, I heard a door open and then the loud sounds of approaching footsteps followed closely.

'Remove the tape Adrian, the Commander is already waiting,' a feminine voice commanded, cutting into the eerie silence. 'And fit him with negative glasses too.'

The next moment saw the tape shutting my mouth removed and my sight restored.

I squinted and looked around. I soon discovered that I was in a low ceilinged room illuminated by five bright bulbs.

There were three creatures in the room with me. One of them had the features of a young woman, another had the features of a bespectacled elderly man while the last one had the physique of a prize fighter.

'Is this him?' the big one asked the little suited female. 'I kind of expected more.'

The Female hissed. 'Shut up and take him to Commander.'

I swallowed quickly. 'Errm Ms. Nymph, I don't really understand what's happening here. Why does the Commander want to see me?'

I didn't get a reply to the question I asked because the Nymph walked out of the room as if she wasn't the one I directed the question to.

The big one immediately untied my hands and yanked me out of the chair by the collar of the green polo shirt I wore. I tried struggling with him but the only reward I got for my pathetic attempt was a very hard slap on my chubby cheek.

'Any more silly moves and I'll blow your dumb brain out,' He threatened.

I nodded dumbly and held my hands up in surrender. It suddenly occured to me that there was no sense whatsoever in struggling with a huge and armed enemy.

The big fairy then gripped me on the wrist and dragged me out of the room to a large, spacious office with luxurious furnishings.

'Brad, How did you get him?' A very small fairy with large luminous eyes asked the bulky fairy beside me as soon as we entered the office.

'Not me sir. It was Natasha ID'd him and brought him in,' Brad corrected.

'Ok then. You can go,' the Commander ordered.

Brad saluted and left the room.

'Sit down please,' the Commander said, as he motioned me to a seat opposite his swivel chair. 'I'm very sorry that you haven't really been treated nicely by the fairies you have met so far. They probably don't realise how important you are to the execution of our world conquest plans.'

'It's nothing sir,' I said, with a frosty smile on my lips. 'May I ask what you mean by world domination plans?'

'Well, I was coming to that,' the Commander intimated. 'You see, there was a time in the distant past when Humans and Fairies co-habitated the earth. Goblins, Nymphs, Trolls, Centaurs, Gnomes, Sprites and all the other kinds of Fairy lived normally on earth with Humans then.'

'So what led you people underworld?' I asked.

'The Wicknedness of Humans that's what. The Emperor of Rome around 164 AD whose name was Andreas Perqeasus decreed that every Fairy in the world be eliminated after a certain gnome was accused of stealing gold from the Empire's sacred treasury.'

'Why should all Fairies be punished for the offence of only one gnome? No. That's plain cruelty,' I commented.

'Ignore the fvcking voice,' said a third voice. 'It's most certainly your mind playing tricks on you.'

'I'm waiting Human,' the Nymph's voice brought my train of thought to a sudden halt.

I guess I don't have a choice, I thought.

'Ok I'll follow you, but on one condition,' I said to the Nymph.

'You are not in the position to make demands Human,' the Nymph replied. 'Let's hear your demand anyway,' she added after a momentary pause.

'You'll find a way of helping me with this paper.'

'I'll see what I can do. That's all I can promise for now,' came the stern reply.

'Ok.'

'Are you ready Human?'

'I guess I . . .'

I couldn't complete my reply because of a sudden burst of sharp pain I felt at the back of my head. The Nymph had struck the butt of the gun against the back of my head. I passed out almost immediately.

. . . I hope I haven't put myself in trouble with what I've just agreed to o. . .

EPISODE 1

Van's UTME Centre.
April 28th, 2016. 12:45pm GMT+1

'We have only fifteen minutes to the end of this exam. I'll advise you start going through your works now to correct any mistake you might have made in the course of working,' the high pitched voice of the female Invigilator chimed in my ears.

It took my brain a few seconds to fully grasp the gravity of the Invigilator's message, and when it did, my heart almost stopped beating altogether. Fifteen minutes left? And I haven't touched the physics section of my examination at all. Chai! I don enter am today.

I hastily tore my eyes off the robust lap of the fair skinned girl sitting diagonally in front of me. That yellow lap had simply magnetised my eyes away from my question paper and answer sheet for the last five minutes, but with what I just heard, the time for such shenanigans is certainly over.

I hastily withdrew my pencil from in between my teeth, where it had been hanging for God knows how long, and began to shade answers on the answer sheet without as much as a glance at my question paper. Of course, I needed not to be told that answering fifty tough questions on ones least favoured subject correctly in the space of fifteen short minutes was only possible in wild dreams and, perhaps, Nollywood movies. Na random shading sure pass jare.

'Van . . .' a feminine voice called behind me.

I was irritated at being disturbed, and a bit surprised too. I didn't remember telling anyone my name before the commencement of the exam, so I was surprised to hear someone calling my name.

'What?' I asked, cocking my head in the direction I suppose the call came from.

'What is what?' the voice, oddly, sounded like a guy's this time.

'Aren't you the one that called me just now?'

'I called you? Mtcheeew. See I don't have any time to waste. If you want to ask . . . ' the ending words of the whispered reply was drowned by a sharp warning from the eagle eyed Invigilator.

'Hey you! Yes, that rasta haired fellow and the big headed one behind him. I won't tolerate any form of side talks. Be warned, don't let me catch you again.'

A few heads naturally turned in our direction but I bit my lower lip and simply focused on shading answers into my answer sheet as if I didn't know what the Invigilator.

After five minutes or so of religious shading answers, I was almost through with exam when I heard the call again.

'Come Van. Your attention is urgently needed somewhere,' the voice was unmistakeably feminine now.

'Come where? Who are you?' I demanded in a whisper.

'I'm a nymph, from the underworld. I have been ordered by the commander to bring you in for a little questioning,' the voice replied.

Nymph? Underworld? Questioning? I was confused to say the least.

'I'm sorry Ms. Nymph. I don't really get you. Questions about what?'

'I don't know. The Commander will tell you that. Right now, I need you to follow me.'

'As you can see, I'm in the middle of an important exam here. Tell your Commander I'm busy. I don't even think I ever want to see him. Now go away,' I said with a lot more courage than I really felt deep down. Something in me, probably gut feeling or a sixth sense, told me that the Nymph was trouble, big trouble.

The Voice hissed. 'You are already in big trouble Human, don't compound your problems by infuriating me.'

I was about replying when I felt a cold sensation on the back of my neck. It felt like a icy cold metal was pressed it.

'In case you don't know Human, that's a ray gun on the back of your neck, not those flimsy guns you humans carry around,' the Nymph informed me. 'One shot from this baby and at least twelve people will die in this hall, including you of course. Now what do you say?'

I instantly felt cold all over. I have never been this close to death before. I closed my eyes and assessed my situation.

'Go to the underworld and hear what the commander has to say,' a voice in me said.

'No. Don't even try it. They might be planning to hurt you,' another voice in me said.

'Nooooooo,' the Lieutenant screamed as he felt a strong wave of current sweep away every ounce of energy. He fell to the rock littered floor of the cave unconscious.

The goblin allowed himself a grin of satisfaction. He felt happy that the guinea pig for the goblins' destructive experiment had been successfuly captured. Very soon, the human race will be wiped off the surface of the earth and the people of the underworld will take over the control of the world . . .

PROLOGUE (Contd.)

The men exchanged glances of amazement. This man crying his eyes out before them had always been known as a tough and steely fellow since the day he joined the force. What could have transformed him to a
weakling so quickly?

Captain Ciaran knelt beside Stevens and gave him a gentle pat on the back.

'Calm down Private. Where are the other men?' Ciaran asked gently.

Stevens sniffed back tears. 'They . . . They are dead.'

'You mean Masters and the two others are dead?' Lt. Finch roared, losing his cool totally. 'How? What happened?'

Private Stevens stared straight ahead of him with teary eyes. He just couldn't bring himself to describe the gory death of his colleagues in the hands of the strange creature to the Lieutenant.

Lt. Finch moved closer to Pvt. Stevens and pulled him up roughly by his sweat soaked vest.

'Tell me what happened Private. That's a direct order.'

'I . . . We were . . . ,' Private Stevens stopped his ramblings altogether when he saw a huge figure at the entrance of the cave. The figure possesed the same features as the creature that killed Lance Corporal Masters and his two other colleagues not long ago.

'That's him!' he screamed as if his life depended on it. Well maybe it did.

The other members of the R9 unit turned in time to see a big, seven feet plus tall, creature with a frog like face and a puffy chest with scales all over its body, blocking the cave entrance.

'Holy Mary!' Sergeant Dylan gasped.

'Shut the fvck up Dylan,' Lt. Finch snapped. 'Open fire! Everybody open fire!' he screamed his orders as if he wanted his voice to be heard in a faraway continent.

The response was instantaneous, the six R9 unit members immediately took aim and began to fire at the alien creature before them.

The awe inspiring creature did nothing during the shooting other than flashing its tiny, reptilian teeth at its adversaries. The bullets fired at it were simply ricocheting off its scaly body.

'Cease fire,' Lt. Finch ordered his men when it became crystal clear that their weapons were completely useless against their enemy.

The Alien laughed, a terrible laugh that sounded like a croak. 'Why stop? Why stop shoot? Bullet finish?'

Finch wiped his forehead with the sleeve of his shirt. 'Who are you?'

'Combat Goblin. From underworld,' the monster replied.

'What do you want?' Lt. Finch inquired further.

'What want? Hypnotize strongest mind and eliminate rest,' came the goblin's reply.

'Hypnotize?' the Lieutenant echoed in shock. 'Why?'

The goblin checked an odd kind of wristwatch under his sleeve and shook his head slowly. 'No time for trivialties.'

With that, he drew a strange looking rifle from the holster on his hip and fired at the R9 unit men. Just once.

'Sh'i't. It's a fu'c'king ray gun. Take cover! Behind the rocks!' Lt. Finch yelled at his men.

The men quickly retreated to hide behind the various small rocks in the cave. It didn't help them though, as the single bullet struck them all, excepting Lieutenant Finch alone.

The goblin walked over to where the shell-shocked Lieutenant hid, and slipped something behind his ears.

'What's that?' Finch managed to ask.

'Translator. To spare you the headache of trying to decipher my goblin accent everytime,' the fear inspiring goblin spoke flawless English for the first time since the encounter began. It's the translator at work of course.

'You have the strongest mind, that's why you were spared,' he continued after a brief pause.

'What now?'

'You will come with me to the underworld. The Commander wants to see you,' the goblin informed him with a evil smile on his lips.

'No way,' Lt. Finch protested, albeit weakly.

The smile on the goblin's face widened into a wolfish grin. 'I'm afraid you don't have a choice Lieutenant. We, goblins, have been preparing for this day for months. Nothing can stop us from executing this plan.'

That said, the goblin produced a small needle like device called the stunner from his hip pocket. He then plunged it in Finch's neck.
