The post I responded to said accounting principles are different. I only used GAAP as an example there. Now you're talking of accounting standards. Accounting principles and standards are not the same. Accounting principles are same everywhere in the world. You can verify that. I studied accounting for my first degree, so I am not responding with information gotten from the internet. An accountant in Nigeria will have no problem adapting in Australia, he'll only need to understand how the taxes work.

Without knowing the accounting principles of a particular country you know you can't jump into any role as an accountant. Plus you claimed to live in Australia for just 3 months during which 2 months was unsuccessful job search, another 2 weeks of forklift certification. So which means you haven't even got any paycheck yet. How can you compare life as an accountant in Nigeria to someone working shifts carrying and picking cartons in a warehouse, with the associated body pain that comes with such low skilled low paying jobs. Some of us here have lived in the western world and we know exactly how things work, you can only f*ool those who haven't left Nigeria or you are not being truthful about earning a million naira per month.

The problem here is hypocrisy. People want to be here and there. People want to eat their cake and have it.

If you want to divorce your spouse when he or she offends you, avoid church wedding. Do your traditional marriage or any other form of marriage. The issue is that people want church wedding but don't want the cross that comes with church wedding. Church wedding vow says, "... until death do us part".

Choose a tradition you can maintain. Don't deceive yourself with church wedding when you are not willing to abide by its principles.

Is Divorce a Sin?

I think the right question should be, did Jesus Permit divorce? Did God permit divorce? In other words, are you even allowed to divorce before you start talking about whether it is a sin or not?

The straight answer is that Jesus never permitted divorce. Once marriage is validly contracted, even adultery as some of you wrongly allege is not a ground for divorce.

I know this whole misunderstanding is coming from Jesus' statement in Matthew 19:9. I will clarify it. But before then, I am not writing this to give people a license to cheat on their spouses. As a matter of fact, you owe your spouse fidelity and faithfulness. It is their right. You are not doing them a favor by being faithful.

Back to Matthew 19:9 where it seemed Jesus gave an exception for divorce:

"Whoever divorces his wife except for unchastity and marries another commits adultery."

The exceptive clause, "EXCEPT FOR UNCHASTITY" is the major issue here. Simply put, unchastity is a good reason to divorce one's spouse.

You may want to ask, what constitutes 'unchastity?' We shall get to know soon.

We all remember that the New Testament was originally written in Greek bah?

The Greek word for unchastity is "PORNEIA." The Protestants argue that this Greek word "porneia" means adultery. This is why if you read the Protestant New International Version of the Bible, Matthew 19:9 is translated thus:

"I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, EXCEPT FOR MARITAL UNFAITHFULNESS, and marries another woman commits adultery."

For most Protestants, though marriage is meant to last a lifetime, but adultery justifies divorce and remarriage. This is because they interpreted the Greek word "porneia" or "unchastity" as adultery.

This is not true. And this is not Catholic teaching.

Catholic biblical scholars believe that it is wrong to translate the Greek word "porneia" as adultery. In the Catholic New American Bible, Matthew 19:9 is translated thus:

"I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) and marries another commits adultery."

Here, the exceptive clause is: "UNLAWFUL MARRIAGE."

If you read the King James Version of the Bible, the translation for PORNEIA is even more interesting. It translates Matthew 19:9 thus:

"And I say unto you, whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for FORNICATION, and shall marry another committeth adultery."

Here, the exceptive clause is Fornication. And fornication is the sin of two unmarried people having sexual intercourse. If either person is married or both are married to other people, the sin is called adultery. Following this translation, the only way that a couple could commit fornication is if they were never really in a Christian marriage to begin with.

Many recent translations of porneia in Matt 19:9 used "sexual immoralities." That still begs the question of what sexual immoralities could mean.

In all these, what really is the correct translation for the word PORNEIA? Is it the Protestants' "adultery", the King James' "fornication", or the Catholics' "Unlawful marriage"? Even if porneia is to be seen as unchastity or sexual immoralities, what constitutes unchastity?

The answer to the above questions can be better clarified using the bible. I will give you two examples: Matthew 15:19 and Mark 7:21-22.

Matthew 15:19 "For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, ADULTERY, UNCHASTITY, theft, false witness, blasphemy."

Mark 7:21-22, "From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, UNCHASTITY, theft, murder, ADULTERY, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly."

Pay attention to this: Adultery and unchastity are both prohibited in the texts above. If you read the Greek text, it is "porneia" that is translated as unchastity, in some bible it is translated as sexual immorality. While the Greek word "moicheia" is translated as adultery. Therefore, from these passages, we can see that porneia does not mean adultery as that would be an unnecessary repetition.

The word for adultery in Greek is 'moicheia.' If the author of Matthew 19:9 felt that Christ was talking about adultery, he wouldn't have used 'porneia' which means unchastity.

This is Matthew 19:9 in its original Greek

λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν ὅτι ὃς ἂν ἀπολύσῃ τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ μὴ ἐπὶ ΠΟΡΝΕΊΑΙ καὶ γαμήσῃ ἄλλην, ΜΟΙΧΑ͂ΤΑΙ.

I have put into capital letters two words:
πορνείᾳ (porneia) and μοιχᾶται (moichatai — verb form)

If the Bible intended that adultery is a ground for divorce, the two words would have been moicheia. And it will read thus: "I tell you that whoever divorces his wife, except for ADULTERY, and marries another woman commits ADULTERY."

But fortunately or unfortunately, that is not how it was written in the Bible.

If you read Act 15:28-29, the Apostles addressed the Gentiles prohibiting four things:

"For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things: that you abstain (1) from what has been sacrificed to idols, and (2) from blood and (3) from what is strangled and (4) from unchastity. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell." RSV (inserted numbers, mine)

Take note of the number (4), still talking about Porneia or Unchastity. These four prohibitions above came from a deep-rooted Jewish tradition found in Leviticus 17 and 18.

If you read Leviticus through, you will discover that in chapter 18, what the Jews mean by unchastity or Porneia was explicitly explained. It was simply an incestuous marriage. Having sexual intercourse with a close relative was greatly forbidden, not to talk of marriage. For the Jews, marriage of this nature is unlawful. This was what Christ was referring to in Matthew 19:9. It is a reference to an unlawful and thus invalid marriage. It is not a reference, as Protestants view it, to a specific act committed during a legitimate "life-long marriage.

Jesus' teaching on divorce was revolutionary. Remember that it was to answer the Jews who thought that one could divorce his wife for some reasons that made Jesus to give the answer he gave. If Jesus permitted divorce, what then makes his teaching different from the one Moses taught the Jews in the OT?

If Christ's teaching on divorce was that simple, how can one explain the surprise that surrounded the disciples when they responded in the next verse?

Matthew 19: 10, "(His) disciples said to him, 'If that is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.'"

It's a frustrating scenario for everyone involved.

When clients have a complex project with a budget that drastically undercuts the market value, it's a recipe for DISASTER.

Here's the thing: quality web development, especially anything involving advanced features like escrow wallets, demands significant time, skill, and resources.

Attempting to squeeze that into a tiny budget simply doesn't work.

Desperate developers might try to take on such projects, but the results almost inevitably include what you described: missed deadlines, poor work, and a frustrated client.

If a client doesn't want to invest ADEQUATELY in their online presence, they're far more likely to encounter either unqualified developers or worse, outright scams.

Professionals in any field deserve fair COMPENSATION. It ensures we can dedicate the necessary time and attention to produce the best possible results.

Honestly, turning down underfunded projects is a sign of professionalism, not a bad attitude.

I always encourage clients to understand that high-quality websites are an investment in their business.

When they see web development as a PARTNERSHIP, rather than a bargain-bin service, everyone benefits.

I don use too much grammar but the truth be say your likes should do better because we don chat about projects in the past but your investment can't work for me and you never had the balls to say straight away that your budget is tight or low, it is always "ok" and you go mute until the messages are cleared.

Far from it, my comment has nothing to do with budget. Even if it were, it's not an excuse to deliver low-quality project. As a web developer, if you accept to deliver a project like Facebook or Whatsapp for N100K, it is your duty to deliver. The client should not be blamed for that. An agreement is an agreement.

Secondly, before now I never knew turning down a project can be considered bad attitude. I am a service provider myself, and I turn down projects on a daily basis. I'll give an example of what I consider bad attitude in respect of web design. I recently hired a web designer from here (I hope he sees this). He completed the first task and got paid for it. I assigned another task to him. This time I made the mistake of paying him 100% of the agreed fee up front, thinking that will motivate him to deliver on time. This project was only supposed to take a few hours, but days later, this guy was still giving me excuses. I checked the file on cpanel and noticed it's not been updated for 5 days, meaning he's not working on it, so I changed the login details and blocked him.

Responding to your last paragraph. I am an IT person too, so for every task I assign, I have at least a fair idea of what it entails. When a dev quotes an unrealistic fee, I simply respond with "okay", and move on to the next person. That's because I don't have the time for negotiation. This has nothing to do with me not having the balls, like you said. By virtue of my military background, I have the balls to do whatever even physically, let alone when I'm behind a keyboard. It's not also a tight budget thing, cos by the grace of God, money is the least of my problems.

Over the last 17 years, I have hired more than 50 web developers from this platform, for various tasks. Hence, my comment that web devs here are difficult to work with is not made up, but based on my personal experience vis-à-vis my experience with devs on other platforms like Fiverr. That's not to say there are no good ones. I have met amazing web developers here whose web design/development skills and attitudes are top notch.

It goes both ways. Nigerian service providers (e.g Web Designers) are the most difficult to work with. Poor quality work, missed deadlines, bad attitude, the list is endless.

Someone who hasn't travelled outside Nigeria will never understand. There is no basis for comparison between Nigeria and a developed country. In terms of everything, I mean everything, countries like Australia, UK and Canada are way ahead of Nigeria. Having said that, the decision to relinquish one's job as a manager in Nigeria for a low level job (e.g. forklift operator) in Australia is personal, which we should all respect. Besides, no one migrates with the primary objective of taking up a cleaning or fork lift operator job. For most people already at the middle or top level of their careers, they take up these jobs to survive, pending when they land their ideal jobs.

For me, if I am to choose between being a bank manager in Nigeria and forklift operator in Australia, I'll go with the latter. As a forklift operator in Australia, I will live a good life and provide a better future for my children. Even if I decide to return to Nigeria after 25 to 30 years, I'll live very comfortably, far better than I would have, had I been a bank manager.

To reiterate, no basis for comparison, and respect people's decisions. Shalom!

Please don't be offended that I'm quoting you. I'm just curious. In Australia, a person above 21 earning minimum wage has a take home of approximately $3K per month (I mean net pay). Let's assume that this your person earns $3K and his wife also earns $3K, that's a total of $6K for the family. How much is flight ticket to Nigeria that they cannot afford? Or are they both jobless?

Just a quick clarification. There are no menial jobs in developed countries. Every job you do is valued and oyibo will never look down on you based on the job you do. For this reason, a manager in Naija will not have any problem taking up a cleaner job. Besides, there is no huge disparity in pay like we have in Nigeria. Unlike Naija companies where managers earn hundreds of thousands and cleaners 15K, here if I work as a cleaner and earn $2k monthly, a manager in my company can’t earn more than 4K. He will pay more tax than me and will not enjoy some benefits I get as a low income earner. If you’ve been to a developed country then you’ll understand how shitty Nigeria is.

It's nothing but greed. If you talk of operating costs, they do not have higher operating costs than the likes of Sobeys, Walmart and Costco. If it's import cost, most of the food we eat in Canada is imported, and the cheapest thing you can buy here is food (African food excluded). So, we don't mind Chinese or Indians opening African stores. If they can sell cheaper, we'll patronize them.

That's a fact. African stores owned by Nigerians in Canada are rip-offs. They sell things at more than 10 times the original price. For instance, one small tuber of yam is sold for about CAD15, that's like N15,000 at today's exchange rate. Is that not ridiculous?

Another lie of yours is that I am misleading people. FYI, every Nigerian solider has access to the Armed Forces Act Cap A20 LFN 2004 as amended, and other regulations, so they know the consequences of their actions. The worst punishment she'll get for coming online is not up to what she suffers presently.

I was only trying to educate you on how things work. Instead of you to do your findings you're here attacking me. You made reference to the DPR's statement. As if you're not in Nigeria. If she reports directly to the AHQ office in charge of such cases, they'll ask her to follow the chain of command (i.e. Go and apply through her CO). Who is her CO? The same officer she's complaining against.
