By Anthony Ogbo Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari’s threats to probe governance affairs of his predecessors has tumbled into a boomeranging breadth, prompting the General to personally send a plea with apologies to the former President and one of the targets of his proposed probe, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, International Guardian reliably gathered. “I didn’t personally know what was said or written, but to my understanding, PMB was only trying to diffuse rumors in the media about Obasanjo being a target of his probe,” a source close to Buhari’s administration explained in a text message. Chief Obasanjo was already gathering a dossier which included documents linking President Buhari and key allies and colleagues in his administration to major fraud related to various affairs of the government, when he received President Buhari’s “es·prit de corps” plea for a common understanding and restraint. To further appease the aged former leader, President Buhari quickly announced a retraction of his threats, announcing publicly that he would not extend his corruption probe beyond the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan. A worried President Buhari specifically indicated through his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Femi Adesina, that he would not waste time in probing the administrations of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Abdulsalam Abubakar, Sani Abacha, and Ibrahim Babangida. The retraction nonetheless created doubts among critics on the president’s credibility in fighting corruption as he initially swaggered. President Buhari, it may be recalled, had consistently vowed to investigate and bring to book, all persons who looted the country’s funds. Consequently, he made a threat to arrest and prosecute past ministers and other officials who stole Nigeria’s oil and diverted government’s money to personal accounts. The President’s request for collaboration with the United States, however, prompted an alleged reaction by President Obasanjo considered as one of Nigeria’s most corrupt past leader by most western countries. The United States has indicated it would help Nigeria’s new leader track down billions of dollars in stolen assets – a move that might expose previous fraudulent engagements in the Obasanjo’s regime. International Guardian gathered that President Buhari’s backtrack from his initial plans for a comprehensive probe of public-fund misappropriation may jeopardize Nigeria’s request to the United States for collaboration on tracing missing funds. The United States government it was gathered, may not oblige to selective investigation of executive fraudsters and may not spare Buhari himself. It may be recalled that as the Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar was implicated by a US Grand Jury which reports detailed his fraudulent involvement with Congressman, William Jefferson to secure a business deal in Nigeria. On August 5, 2009, Jefferson was found guilty of 11 of the 16 corruption counts, and was sentenced to 13 years on November 13, 2009, the longest sentence ever handed down to a congressman for bribery. From fraudulent privatization of state- owned enterprises; filthy oil deals; bribery associated with Halliburton, Siemens, and Transcorp, rushed terminal contracts, to personal loans for his farm business, embezzlement of Excess Crude Account, and Petroleum Trust Development Fund (PTDF), Chief Obasanjo’s regime has been considered the most fraudulent in Nigeria’s history. “For Buhari to claim that he would not waste time digging into the far past, simply signals a red flag about his involvement in the whole thing,” confided a source close to Washington. Last week, International Guardian reported how President Obasanjo was the only one to rightly expose President Buhari’s negative past records of public accountability, revealing his readiness to hit the blogs with documents that would shock the nation. The story also narrated how Buhari as the chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) between 1998-99, failed to account for a missing 25 billion naira, confiscating all related documents and obstructing all investigative channels. Buhari’s alleged plea to Obasanjo, therefore, was timely. “When it comes to being vindictive, you know Baba does not waste time and Buhari should have known better,” a source close to the All Progressives Congress (APC) told our newsroom. www.thefocusng.com/buharis-hasty-withdrawal-from-probing-obasanjo-questions-his-credibility-on-fighting-corruption/ |

Five of the suspected abductors of the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Chief Olu Falae, have been arrested. Falae was kidnapped on his farm, three weeks ago, at Ilado Village in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, by suspected Fulani herdsmen. The elder statesman was released four days later. Family sources confirmed that three of the hoodlums were arrested in Niger State last Sunday; two others were picked up at the weekend. It was gathered that the suspects are in the custody of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the State Police Command, Akure, the state capital. Policemen are still on the trail of the other fleeing suspects. A source said: “Five of them were arrested, three in Niger State on Sunday. Two others were arrested somewhere I cannot say for now but the suspects are in SARS custody. “The police are still searching for the other seven suspects and I am sure they too will be arrested very soon.” Police spokesman Femi Joseph said the kidnap of the former Minister of Finance was being handled by the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase. He said: “I don’t know anything about the issue again; it is the IG who has taken over the issue because it is a national issue. “He is likely to brief the press about the development today.” http://thenationonlineng.net/police-arrest-falaes-suspected-abductors/ |
Some people enjoy talking but are unaware of the rules that guide conversations. Here are some rules to observe when you engage in discussions with people Listen more It is often said that to be a good conversationalist, you have to be a good listener. That is to say that the key to a good conversation is not in the talking, but in the listening. Avoid being self-centred in conversations. You can ask intelligent questions and offer brilliant advice to people only when you listen more. Also, simple gestures like focusing on who is talking, nodding your head, and adding little exclamations at appropriate moments, show the other party that you are interested and involved in the discussion. Be prepared Before you start a conversation with someone, ensure you are prepared on what to say or at least how to kick-start it. Do not start up a conversation and fall short of what to say or get lost in the middle of it. Think about the things that will probably interest people you converse with and look for some background information on the topic of discourse or the people. Tailor the conversation It is better to discuss certain topics with people you are familiar with. The people you meet for the first time may have reservations about certain topics and may not feel comfortable discussing them with you. Avoid awkward topics or arguing with the other parties. Don’t dominate A conversation involves two or more people sharing opinions and ideas about a particular topic. It is a dialogue and not time for monologues. If you are in charge of the conversation and have talked for a few minutes without any questions, comments, or general signs of life from other people, cede the floor to someone else and give them room to share their own perspective on the topic of discourse. Do not monopolise the conversation. Think first Some mistakes are made in conversations because people fail to think before they speak. Sometimes, in the course of a discussion, they could utter annoying words to the other parties. To avoid offending people during conversations, don’t blurt out statements out of anger or without thinking. You could avoid further disagreements by sieving your thoughts before speaking them out. Don’t interrupt When you are involved in a conversation, give people the opportunity to air their opinions because they are entitled to it. Do not interrupt anyone; wait until they have stopped talking before you start. Interrupting a person’s thought or speech sounds rude and could send the discussion off into another tangent. This also applies to telephone conversations. When you are interrupted, the polite thing to do is shut up and not go back to the conversation except you are asked to. Be liberal When there are more than two people involved in a conversation, be sure to involve everyone in the discussion. Do not take sides or prefer a particular person for the conversation. Also, be sure to choose subjects which everyone has an interest in, so they can contribute to it. That makes people have a sense of belonging. Don’t overshare Having a conversation with someone, especially when you need an advice on a particular issue does not mean you should reveal your entire life as soon as you start the discussion. If you would reveal a certain amount of information about yourself, ensure you do that with someone you feel safe with and can trust. Revealing too much personal information could cut across as an act of desperation and repel people. Respect privacy It is good that people trust you enough to tell you their secrets but do not sound nosey or desperate by probing for too much information, especially when they do not feel like revealing more. Don’t dig too deeply into their personal life. If they are comfortable talking about the particular issue again, let them bring it up at their own pace. If they don’t seem willing to discuss it any further, change the subject. http://www.punchng.com/feature/social-etiquette/be-a-good-communicator/ |
